Helen Hanks of Dighton, Kansas passed away peacefully on February 18,
 2022, at the Cedar Village long-term care facility in Ness City, Kansas,&nbsp; in the presence of her daughter and daughter-in-law.&nbsp; The cause of 
death was cancer-related complications.&nbsp;

She was born Helen Blanche Prose in the country in Ness County, 
Kansas, on July 1, 1935, daughter of Frank Clarence Prose and Nola V. 
(Meek) Prose.&nbsp; Due to the Depression and Dust Bowl, the young family 
moved to Westwego, Louisiana, where Frank found work in off-shore 
drilling for the Texas Oil Company.&nbsp; A sister, Ava Adele, was born in 
Louisiana in 1938.&nbsp; The family returned to Kansas in 1950 when Frank’s 
father, Bert Prose, asked Frank to take over the family farm located 
south of Beeler, Kansas.

Helen graduated from Ness City High School in 1953 and then attended 
and graduated from Brown-Mackie Business School.&nbsp; Upon graduation, she 
accepted a secretarial position with Beech Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp;
 While in Wichita, Helen met and then married Robert F. Metzker of 
Coldwater, Kansas.&nbsp; Shortly thereafter the couple relocated to Boulder, 
Colorado so that Bob could attend the University of Colorado.&nbsp; Bob was 
later employed by the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder.&nbsp; Two 
children, Rebecca Claire (1957) and Robert Charles (1963) were born 
during the couple’s stay in Boulder.

With the children out of grade school, Helen worked for the Boulder 
Valley School District as a secretary and attended classes through the 
University of Colorado’s College for Women, concentrating on literature,
 English, and writing.&nbsp; Later she wrote articles for the Boulder Daily 
Camera and various other publications. &nbsp;In 1976, Helen received a 
certificate in Small Business Management from the Colorado Economic 
Development Association and Small Business Administration.&nbsp; After Bob’s 
retirement from the National Bureau of Standards in 1981, the couple 
returned to Lane County, Kansas.

Helen cared for her mother, Nola, through the mid-1990s.&nbsp; In 1996, 
Helen married E. Joe Hanks, a farmer and rancher in Lane County.&nbsp; Helen 
and Joe designed, built, and lived in their dream home just east of 
Dighton, Kansas where they enjoyed gardening, tending the orchard they 
had planted, and providing pumpkins for Dighton’s annual “Punkin Patch 
Day” all while Joe continued his farming and ranching operations.&nbsp; They 
enjoyed traveling and even drove to Alaska for their honeymoon.&nbsp; Joe 
passed away in August 2021.

Helen is survived by her sister, Ava Adele Hack (Bob), of Springfield
 Oregon, daughter Rebecca Metzker-Hansen (Brian) of Boulder, Colorado; 
daughter-in-law Donna Metzker of Ness City, Kansas; granddaughter Erica 
Prose Hansen (Alex) of Victor, Idaho; grandson Frank Hansen (Erin) of 
Littleton, Colorado; grandson Gunnar Hansen of Victor, Idaho; grandson 
Derek Hembree of Long Beach, California; granddaughter Jennifer Howard 
(Nathan) of Ellis, Kansas; grandson Ryan Hembree (Andrea) of Blanchard, 
Oklahoma; and four great grandchildren. Preceding Helen in death are her
 husband E. Joe Hanks, her son Robert C. Metzker, and her first husband 
Robert F. Metzker.&nbsp;

A family and friends grave-side memorial for Helen will be held at 
the Buda Cemetery this spring at a date to be announced preceded by a 
mass at Sacred Heart Church in Ness City.&nbsp; Memorial contributions may be
 made to Hospice of the Prairie, Dodge City, Kansas; Sacred Heart 
Church, Ness City, Kansas; and Buda Cemetery, Ness County, Kansas.

Richard D. “Dick” Dannels, age 88, was a longtime Hays resident having moved to Kansas City, Missouri, a few years ago, where he passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the North Kansas City Hospice House.&nbsp; He was born on August 7, 1933, in Havana, Kansas, to George Everett and Eleanor (Boone) Dannels.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A graduate of Wichita North High School, Dick worked for Motorola and American Legion Post 173 while residing in Hays.&nbsp; He retired from the United States Air Force as a Technical Sergeant (E6) and was stationed stateside and in multiple countries during his 20 years of service.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He is survived by: daughters, Dana (Rick) Klaus, Jodi (Dave) Schmidt, Brenda Unrein and Erika (Jeff) Coffman; son, Rick Dannels; 15 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wives Janet (Larrick) Dannels and Matilda (Werth) Dannels, his parents, and his brother Kenneth Dannels.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Inurnment services will be 2pm on Friday, February 25, 2022, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Wakeeney, Kansas.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to North Kansas City Hospice House. Quentin Charles "Q" Kaiser, loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin 
and friend, 34, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, February 16th,
 2022. 
 Quentin was born in Great Bend, Kansas on November 22, 1987, a son of Laura (Hopkins) Ploutz and the late Curtis L. Kaiser.
 Raised in Claflin, Kansas, he was a sweet, caring, kind- 
hearted, intelligent, talented, beautiful soul who would give the last 
dollar he had to a homeless man. He was an artist, a musician, 
photographer and had many God given gifts to do anything and go 
anywhere. He was brilliant and talented in so many ways. He was gifted 
with a beautiful smile and a personality that was bigger than life. He 
loved nature, the outdoors and his family. To know him was to love him 
and he never met a stranger. He was the rose among the thorns. Anyone 
who knew him and not his demons, were lucky to have been given that 
opportunity. He truly was a gift of God.
 Survivors include his mother, Laura Ploutz (Alan), of 
Ellsworth, Kansas; three brothers, Brandon Kaiser (Pam Beeck), of 
Salina, Kansas, Aaron Kaiser (Kendra), of Claflin, Kansas, Logan Larson,
 of Ellsworth, Kansas; two sisters, Ashley Schauf (Brian), of Hays, 
Kansas, Casey Webber (Catlin), of Wilson, Kansas; step- sister, Danielle
 Dittman (Josh), of Ellsworth, Kansas; grandmother, Pauline Kaiser, of 
Salina, Kansas.

10, 2022, at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the
 age of 90.

She was born March 19, 1931, in Russellville, MO the daughter of Julius and Sedonia (Hofmockel) Buchta.

Melba was united in marriage to Virgil D. Ehm on October 11, 1953, in Russellville, MO.&nbsp;

Katherine Eileen Morgan passed into the
 heavenly realms in the day of our Lord on February 17, 2022, at the age
 of 73 and after 55+ years of marriage. Katherine was born as Kathrine 
Eileen Emmanuel in Moline, Illinois on November 25, 1948, to Howard 
Emmanuel and Doris Rose Emmanuel. Katherine moved to Denver, Colorado at
 age two with her mother who married Wayne Taylor and was adopted by 
him. The family moved to Phillipsburg, KS. She graduated from 
Phillipsburg High, took classes at FHSU and graduated from the North 
Central Kansas Vocational Technical School.&nbsp; At 17, she was assistant 
manager of the Borum old age home in Phillipsburg, Ks. While serving 
there she met her husband, Clifton Ray Morgan. Clifton Ray and Katherine
 married on November 26, 1966, at the Methodist Church in Phillipsburg. 
They moved to Westminster, Colorado where Kathy served as a nurse aid at
 St. Anthony hospital in Denver. She moved many times with her husband 
and while he served in the Navy.&nbsp;

She was a wife and mother whose value was far beyond any of the earth's riches.&nbsp;

Kathy was a dutiful and energetic wife 
and mother who supported the wanderings of her husband and was the 
bedrock and centerpiece of her family. Katherine was amazingly 
supportive wife and mother to her family. In Virginia Beach she 
organized a brownie scout troop for the underprivileged and they raised 
enough money to go to Disney World in Orlando, Fla.&nbsp; In Charleston, SC 
she along with other mothers founded the mother of twins club as charter
 members.&nbsp; If Kathy saw a need she thought required addressing she did 
not hesitate to move on it with aggressive action even if it meant going
 around the Navy chain of command to pursue a goal.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, grandparents and 2 stepbrothers. Kathy is survived by her 
husband Clifton Ray, and her four children Stacey Walzack (Michael), 
Richard (Sharla), Anthony (Karen), and Andrew (Tricia). She is also 
survived by six grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp; Kathy will be sorely missed by all who 
knew and loved her.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, 
February 23, 2022, at 2 PM at Brock’s ~ Keithley Funeral Chapel and 
Crematory, 2509 Vine Street Hays, KS 67601.&nbsp; The family will receive 
guests beginning at 1 PM prior to the services.

Thursday, February 24, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Olliff-Boeve Funeral Chapel,
 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS 67661 inurnment will follow the

Melvin A. “Mep” Schmidt, 88, Hays, died Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Via Christi Village.

He was born April 19, 1933, in 
Schoenchen the eleventh of thirteen children of Alex and Josephine 
(Werth) Schmidt.&nbsp; He was a graduate of Schoenchen High School and served
 in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.&nbsp; On November 5, 1955, he was united in 
marriage to Mary Ellen Mermis in Hays, and they were married 57 years 
before she preceded him in death on May 19, 2013.&nbsp; Melvin loved his life
 as a farmer and cattleman.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra 
Catholic Church and the Schoenchen Third Degree Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; He
 enjoyed dancing, sports, and playing Pinochle.&nbsp; Mep had a warm smile 
and enjoyed talking with everyone.&nbsp; He loved his wife and family, 
possessed a strong faith, and was a man of his word with strong values.

Survivors include his two sons: Neal 
Schmidt and wife Mary Jo of Center Valley, PA and Jeff Schmidt of Hays, a
 daughter-in-law: Sue Schmidt of Hays, a brother: Francis Schmidt and 
wife Ann of Longmont, CO, a sister-in-law:&nbsp; Betty Schmidt of Hays, three
 grandsons: Scott Schmidt and wife Rachel, Kyle Schmidt and Quinn 
Schmidt, a great grandson: Carter Schmidt, and numerous nieces and 
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, wife Mary Ellen, son Steve Schmidt, brothers: Edwin, Walter, 
John, Irvin, and Aloysius, and sisters: Armella Miller, Rose Schmidt, 
Barbara Basgall, Bertha Stary, Josephine Haselhorst, and Delores 
VanOudenhoven.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:30 am on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Private family inurnment 
will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.&nbsp; Visitation will be from
 5:30 pm until 8:00 on Monday and from 9:00 am until 10:15 on Tuesday, 
all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A vigil service and rosary

 </figure>Melvin A. “Mep” Schmidt, 88, Hays, died Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Via Christi Village.He was born April 19, 1933, in 
Schoenchen the eleventh of thirteen children of Alex and Josephine 
(Werth) Schmidt.&nbsp; He was a graduate of Schoenchen High School and served
 in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.&nbsp; On November 5, 1955, he was united in 
marriage to Mary Ellen Mermis in Hays, and they were married 57 years 
before she preceded him in death on May 19, 2013.&nbsp; Melvin loved his life
 as a farmer and cattleman.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra 
Catholic Church and the Schoenchen Third Degree Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; He
 enjoyed dancing, sports, and playing Pinochle.&nbsp; Mep had a warm smile 
and enjoyed talking with everyone.&nbsp; He loved his wife and family, 
possessed a strong faith, and was a man of his word with strong values.Survivors include his two sons: Neal 
Schmidt and wife Mary Jo of Center Valley, PA and Jeff Schmidt of Hays, a
 daughter-in-law: Sue Schmidt of Hays, a brother: Francis Schmidt and 
wife Ann of Longmont, CO, a sister-in-law:&nbsp; Betty Schmidt of Hays, three
 grandsons: Scott Schmidt and wife Rachel, Kyle Schmidt and Quinn 
Schmidt, a great grandson: Carter Schmidt, and numerous nieces and 
nephews.He was preceded in death by his 
parents, wife Mary Ellen, son Steve Schmidt, brothers: Edwin, Walter, 
John, Irvin, and Aloysius, and sisters: Armella Miller, Rose Schmidt, 
Barbara Basgall, Bertha Stary, Josephine Haselhorst, and Delores

Melvin A. 'Mep' Schmidt

Hermenia (Hedy) Alice Tubbs, 93, of Colby, died February 19, 2022, at 
Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby, Kansas. She was born July 20, 
1928, to Louis and Anna (Janousek) Stupka in Bear Lake, Wisconsin. 
Hermenia spent a short time in Wisconsin before moving with her family 
to a farm in Rawlins County, Kansas where she first learned the meaning 
of hard work. Helping with chores, milking cows, feeding and butchering 
chickens, cooking, scrubbing, were just a few of her daily tasks. But 
her orneriness and humor also played a part in this farm life. She liked
 to tell the story of she and her sisters throwing chickens out of the 
barn loft to see if they could fly only to discover to their dismay 
those chickens would be their dinner for that night. After several years
 her parents sold that farm and built a home north of Colby, Kansas. 
Hedy was married to Jim Tubbs and two children were born to this union: 
Dale and Duane. After living in Goodland, Kansas for a short time where 
they owned and operated a gas station, they moved to Levant, Kansas 
where they resided for many years. 
Hedy was an extremely hard worker all her life and not afraid to attempt
 any and all kinds of jobs. Among those were dental assistant, cafe 
operator, courthouse employee, skilled painter, restaurant cook, and 
housekeeper. She was well known for her work ethic and people admired 
how she was such an amazingly strong woman. Even in her later years she 
could be found climbing ladders to clean or paint. 
Hedy loved her Bingo nights and traveled with friends to nearby towns to
 try her luck 2-3 times a week. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and 
embroidery work in her spare time and treasured the times she spent with
 grandkids, great grandkids, nieces and nephews. She loved caring for 
them and spending time with them which included many sleepovers. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents; sisters 
Bernice, Vivian, Mildred and Fronie (stillborn), and brothers Edwin, 
Chuck, and Louis (Sonny). Hedy is survived by sister Bettie; brother 
Herman (Bud); children, Dale (wife Alana) and Duane; grandchildren 
LeAnna Soehner (husband Chris), Luke Tubbs (wife Jada), Elizabeth Stowe,
 (husband Colt) and Travis Tubbs; 8 great grandchildren, and many 
nieces, nephews, cousins. 
Hermenia Alice Tubbs was a kind, funny, hardworking, generous person who
 is finally at rest and at peace. She will be greatly missed by many. 
A private graveside service for family and friends will be held Tuesday,

James Lyle “Jimmy” Myers, 77, Hays, died Saturday, February, 19, 2022, at HaysMed.

He was born July 23, 1944, in Hays, 
Kansas, the son of James and Josephine (Ptacek) Myers.&nbsp; James attended 
Washington School and graduated from Hays High School with the class of 
1962.&nbsp; He entered the U.S. Army Reserves in 1964, serving for 6 years, 
and was a lifetime member of the American Legion.&nbsp; He worked in the 
restaurant business and always said Dick Unrein was his mentor.&nbsp; James 
married the love of his life, Alfreda “Fritz” Herman on June 15, 1968, in
 St. Peter, Kansas, and during their lifetime they had three daughters.&nbsp; 
Together they owned and operated Pizza Hut, Pizza Inn, Coachman's Inn, 
and Beacon Hill Restaurant.&nbsp; For many years, he managed the American 
Legion, before moving on to A-1 Plank and retiring in 2009.&nbsp; Jim wasn’t 
afraid of hard work, having started working when he was eight years old,
 walking George Phillips' horse for him after his polo matches, earning a
 couple of quarters.&nbsp;

His favorite times were in his garage 
with his brother, Dave rebuilding classic cars, rotating those in his 
collection many times. He treasured those times cruising in the 
convertible with his wife on a Sunday afternoon visiting friends. He 
loved a trip to the casino with his wife, a good cold beer at the 
American Legion or VFW with good friends, and when his family came home 
to visit, though he usually said we were too loud. He also loved drag 
racing, participating in the sport with Vic Lang for many years, and 
watching the races on TV the last several years with his wife. Cars were
 his passion, and always made sure everyone knew to “check their oil”.&nbsp; 
Another treasured memory was spending harvest with the Herman family, 
running a combine and having a beer in the evenings after a hot day in 
the field.&nbsp; His daughters have great memories of him teaching them to 
snow ski, how to drive stick shift, and vacations with lots of laughs.&nbsp; 
He enjoyed reading, collecting coins, telling stories from the past and 
took immense pride in his children, grandchildren and great 
grandchildren.&nbsp; He took any opportunity to talk about them, and as soon 
as they walked in the door, his face would light up.&nbsp; His nephew Jim 
Burney summed it up best (and Dad would agree wholeheartedly), “He had a
 good life, raised a great family, and had lots of people who loved and 
cared for him. You can’t do any better than that.”

He is survived by his wife Fritz, three
 daughters: Tammy Dreiling (Rusty), Jodi Harkin (Bryan), and Angie 
Lachner (Jerad), grandchildren: Nathan Lawson (Jessica), Ryan Lawson 
(Brittni), Collan Lawson (Tiara), Aidan Lawson, Tyler Jones, Lucas 
Harkin, Anna Harkin, Jessica Lachner and Jacob Lachner, step 
grandchildren: Knox Dreiling, Konnor Dreiling, Kyler Dreiling and Kylin 
Dreiling, two great-grandchildren: Addy and Ashton Lawson, three 
sisters-in-law: Carol Hustead, Dolores Myers, and Joan Wohlsechlegel, 
many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends, as well as a long list of 
people he inspired to be the best they could be.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents

 and Dave Myers, and sisters: Betty Hoss and Jan Dreiling.

Betty Ann Hunter, formerly of Plainville, passed away on February 18, 
2022, at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, KS, at the age of 
77. She was born on January 10, 1945, in Graham County, KS, to Frank 
Hunter and Ruby Haas. She had 4 children: Gerald, Ronda, Tonia, and 
Shonda. 
 Betty enjoyed bingo, puzzle books, and noodle ball at the long term care center.
 She is survived by her son Gerald Reaves of Plainville, KS; 
daughters, Ronda (Danny) Bacon of Hoxie, KS and Tonia (Preston) Werner 
of Plainville, KS; sisters, Velma Williams and Mary Ester Rutherford; 
eight grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
 Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Frank Hunter and Ruby 
Haas; daughter, Shonda Hunter; brothers, Everett Lee Hunter, Vernon 
Eugene Hunter, and Dwayne Hunter; sisters, Frankie Mae Rutherford,

Kay Ree Johnson, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by family 
February 18, 2022, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, 
Wichita.&nbsp; She was born January 7, 1940, in Hoisington, to David and Lena
 (Hester) Davis.&nbsp; Kay married Larry Dean Johnson Jan. 30, 1958, in 
Hoisington.&nbsp; He survives.

Kay, a lifetime resident of Barton County, most recently worked in 
customer service for Centel and previously worked at Triangle Rexall 
Drug.&nbsp; She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a 
faithful volunteer for Meals on Wheels and helped with BINGO at Great 
Bend Health and Rehabilitation.&nbsp; She enjoyed cooking, birdwatching, 
fishing, gardening and time spent with family, being committed to making
 her regular phone calls to her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include husband, Larry of the home; three children, Douglas
 Johnson of Tulsa, Okla., Kim Schneweis and husband Doug of Shawnee, and
 David Johnson and wife Dawn of Great Bend; one brother, Albert Davis of
 Hoisington; seven grandchildren, Cassidy Johnson, Dirk Johnson, Whitley
 Johnson, Abby Schneweis, Mark Schneweis, Kaytlyn Johnson and Brandon 
Johnson; and 2 great grandchildren and one to arrive in August.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Wayne Davis, Arnold Davis,
 Richard Davis, Evan Davis, Emerson Davis and Russell Davis; and one 
sister, Geneva Davis.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 
Bryant Funeral Home, with Rev. Tim Bever presiding. Interment will 
follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9:00

Elizabeth Lee Ambrosier

Timothy Lee Siefkes, loving husband, dad, and “Papa,” died on 
February 13, 2022. Tim, son of Kenneth Lee and Joyce (Metz) Siefkes, was
 born on November 19, 1955, in Junction City, Kansas. He lived an 
adventurous childhood with his brother and sisters and loved spending 
time with his extended family in Hudson, where his parents were raised. 
Tim was a proud Eagle Scout, and some of his favorite times growing up 
were with his Boy Scout troop, led by his dad, exploring remote areas of
 Canada and the mountains of Montana and Colorado. Colorado always held a
 particularly special place in Tim’s heart, where he hiked several 
14ers, and vacationed most summers throughout his life with family and 
friends.

Tim’s dad also influenced his love of science, from geology to 
astronomy. Often joking that he was like Cliff Clayburn from “Cheers,” 
Tim proclaimed to have a “vast knowledge of useless information,” and 
was always reading and learning. When Tim was in 8th grade, 
he moved with his family a few houses down the street from Andrea Bowen,
 and told himself he would marry her someday! They were friends at 
Buhler High School, where Tim was the kicker on the football team, and 
Andrea cheered the team on as president of the Pep Club. Tim’s love of 
photography flourished as he filmed the football teams at HCC and later 
at Ft. Hays State University, where he graduated with a degree in Art 
and Photography. Despite attending different colleges, Tim and Andrea 
reconnected and began dating their senior year, and were married in the 
summer of 1980!

Tim spent most of his career at General Laboratories, where he used 
his drafting skills and certifications as a Fire &amp; Explosion 
Investigator and Private Investigator, in a forensic engineering 
capacity. In 2008, Tim joined his father-in-law and brother-in-law’s 
company, Premiere Oil &amp; Exploration Inc., as Oil Production Manager.
 Tim also owned and operated Sunflower Video Productions for 25 years, 
videotaping over 600 weddings and many events around the community.

Tim was an involved parent, never missing an athletic event, music 
performance, or dance recital.&nbsp; Tim’s enthusiasm for attending his 
daughters’ tennis meets waned a bit when he was told that spectators 
have to be quiet during the matches. He was proud to be President of the
 Buhler High Booster Club during Courtney and Amy’s high school years.&nbsp; 
When his daughters took off to K-State for college, Tim became an avid 
football fan and season ticket holder.&nbsp; He loved fixing food for the 
tailgates, especially his famous smoked brisket, chili, and grilled 
hamburgers.

Tim cherished his friends, both from childhood and those he made as 
an adult. In his younger days Tim enjoyed playing softball, where he was
 known to hit homeruns over the Fun Valley fence. Later in life he took 
up golfing, smoking cigars by the campfire, talking politics, and eating
 barbeque with his friends, who were always up to some kind of 
Seinfeld-influenced shenanigans.&nbsp; Tim appreciated the friendships he 
made at church, including the Life Group he and Andrea were a part of.

Tim is survived by: his loving wife, Andrea; daughter, Courtney 
Siefkes, Austin, TX, daughter, Amy Messer (Travis), Gardner; 
grandchildren, Hadley and Bennett Messer, Gardner; stepmother, Carol 
Siefkes, Louisburg; siblings, Kelly Siefkes (Diane), Hutchinson, Tammy 
Metzler (Mike), Goddard, and Julie Siefkes, Wichita; and numerous 
nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Tim was preceded in death by: his parents, Ken and Joyce Siefkes, 
sister, Kerry Stevens; and parents-in-law, Ralph and Shirley Bowen.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 
25, 2022, at First Church of the Nazarene, 4290 N. Monroe, Hutchinson. 
For those wishing to view online, the service will be livestreamed on 
the church’s website: hutchfirstnaz.org.

Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru 
Thursday, with the family present to receive friends from 5-7 p.m.

Tim Siefkes

Herbert P. “Herb” Dechant, 92, Hays, died Friday, February 18, 2022, at HaysMed.

He was born December 30, 1929, in 
Gorham, Kansas the third of thirteen children of Frank and Margaret 
(Rohr) Dechant.&nbsp; He was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from
 1951-1953 during the Korean War.&nbsp; On January 5, 1959 he was united in 
marriage to Viola Holzmeister in Wichita, and they were married nearly 
63 years before she preceded him in death on November 11, 2021.&nbsp; Herb 
worked for Pierce Schippers Construction for many years and at Hays 
Medical Center in the maintenance department, retiring in 1999.&nbsp; He was a
 member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays American Legion Post #173, 
and Hays VFW Post #9076.&nbsp; Herb enjoyed fishing, and was a talented 
woodworker and Jack-of-all-trades who could repair anything.&nbsp; He looked 
forward to the variety of flowers that would bloom in his yard each 
spring and summer and was a master vegetable gardener who generously 
shared his produce with others.

Survivors include his three sons: 
Raymond Dechant and wife Lori of Dodge City, and Brian Dechant and Eric 
Dechant, both of Hays, two daughters: Joan Freeman and husband Sam of 
Ellinwood and Myra Kreutzer of Hays, three brothers: Eugene Dechant of 
Seattle, WA, Duane Dechant of Kansas City, and Harold Dechant and wife 
Madeline of Virginia, five sisters: Betty Ann Knoll of Liberal, Barbara 
Jean Zerr and husband Henry of Garden City, Marietta Dechant of Casper, 
WY, Roseline Ziegler of Englewood, CO, and Ann Ziegler of Olmitz, 13 
grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, wife Viola, two brothers: Virgil and Alvin Dechant, two 
sisters: Irene Sander and Evelyn Erickson, and a grandson Curtis Jacob 
Dechant.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church 
with Fr. Richard Daise officiating.&nbsp; Burial with military honors by the 
Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in the Kansas Veterans’ 
Cemetery, WaKeeney.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on 
Tuesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial 
Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on

Robert P. Schulz, 99, Hill City, Kansas died peacefully February 18, 
2022. Robert was born to Julius Ferdinand and Pearl Josephine (Norris) 
Schulz, August 22, 1922 in Fairbury, Nebraska. Bob attended grade school
 in Artesia, New Mexico and Carlsbad, New Mexico. The family moved to 
Kansas when Bob was 10 years old. Belleville, Kansas became the family’s
 permanent home. Bob was a 1941 graduate of Belleville High School.
 In 1942, Bob found himself a new enlisted member of the United 
States Army. World War II found him Europe, several places in the U.S., 
and in the Pacific Islands, being honorably discharged in September of 
1946.
 	Following his discharge Bob worked several jobs. He became a meat 
cutting apprentice for four years. That experience led him to managing a
 grocery store’s meat department for 15 years and the store manager for 
two years. In 1965, Bob bought the grocery store in Hill City, which he 
ran until his retirement in 1991. Bob’s retirement years were divided 
into six months in Hill City and six months in Tuscon, Arizona. 
 	Bob married Bonnie Hensley in in 1943, becoming not only a husband 
but a stepfather to Bonnie’s 1½ year old son, Robert. Their marriage 
lasted for 50 years. Bonnie died in 1993. Later, Bob and Colleen 
Blackburn were married. Colleen died in 2004. In July of 2009, Bob 
married Donna “Sam” Tietze. She survives. 
 	Bob enjoyed the outdoors. He hunted and rarely missed an 
opportunity to go fishing. He was an integral part of the Hill City 
Community, a member of the AF&amp;AM Lodge #281, Isis Shrine Temple of 
Salina, and an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. 
 	He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Julius R. and 
Frank; sisters, Virginia Wray and Patricia Kuhn; wives Bonnie and 
Coleen; son, Robert. 
 	 He is survived by his wife Donna “Sam” Schulz; three 
grandchildren: Jeff (Jenny) Schulz, LeAnne Schulz and Amy (David) 
Hasemann; sister-in-law Kathleen Schulz; three grandchildren, five 
great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

brother Emil Trybom and three sisters, Gladys Simoneau, Martha Walters 
and Marie Roberts. June is survived by two daughters, Debbie 
(Richard) Conrad of Gaylord, Annie (Larry) Lambert of Smith Center; a 
son, Lonnie (Sheila) Myers of Jewell; two sisters, Esther Lahodney of 
Concordia and Betty Beydler of Spokane, WA; six grandchildren and ten

Doctor Glenn Jefferson Tucker entered this world on November 8th, 1947,&nbsp; in Chickasha, Oklahoma, to be cherished by his Father, Herbert Dow Tucker
 and his Mother, Celeta Lucille Tucker. It is with great sadness that we
 announce that he left this life from his comfortable home in Denver, 
Colorado, at the age of seventy-four, on February 8th, 2022. 

He is 
survived by his brother, Terry, his sister Deanna, and many nieces and 
nephews. He and his wife, Janice (Rahmeier) Tucker, who passed January 
13, 2018 had no children but their nieces and nephews were thought of 
much as their own. Most of Glenn’s early life was spent in Ogallah, 
Kansas, where he attended the Ogallah Christian Church, Ogallah Grade 
School, and continued on to Trego Community High School in nearby 
Wakeeney, where he graduated. His education continued at Fort Hays State
 University, Hays, Kansas, but was interrupted when drafted by the 
United States Army. 

He served his country for two years in the military,
 including a year in Vietnam during that conflict. Not to be deterred, 
he resumed his educational pursuit at the University of Kansas in 
Lawrence, Kansas, where he subsequently earned his Doctorate in 
Environmental Science. He was retired from a long career with the Agency
 for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, a part of the Centers for 
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Throughout his professional life 
and into retirement Glenn was an avid diver and SCUBA instructor, 
photographer, and philanthropist. He had a passion for learning and his 
home was filled with books. He and his wife Jan were also enthusiastic 
travelers having explored all 7 continents.

Friday, February 18, 2022, at Homestead Assisted Living in Manhattan.&nbsp; 
Don was born on April 26, 1936. He married Alberta "Bertie" Forbes on August 25, 1957, in Rexford.&nbsp; To this union, Dalen and Marla were born. Don

Adeline Bernice Sandoval, née Solano, known by many as Bernice or 
Grandma B, late of Thornton, Colorado, passed away on February 13, 2022,
 in Goodland, Kansas, surrounded 
by loved ones.

Bernice was born on May 17, 1939, in Brighton, Colorado. She married 
the love of her life on February 8th, 1958, and settled in Thornton, 
Colorado, where she went on to build a home and raise her three 
beautiful daughters. Bernice cultivated an environment of warmth and 
strength as the family matriarch, and raised her children in a home 
filled with love. She was a very family-oriented and fun-loving woman 
who cherished spending time with her large family. One of her favorite 
pastimes was going up to the hill with her husband, Robert, and her 
sisters, Virginia and Helen Chavez, and she could frequently be found 
dancing and listening to music. Bernice had a deep appreciation for all 
music, but especially adored the Texas Tornados song "(Hey Baby) Que 
Paso" and the music of Freddy Fender, and delighted in dancing to it 
with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, 
and&nbsp;great-great-grandchildren.

Bernice is survived by her daughters, Diane Sandoval, Kathy (John) 
Gonzales, and Linda (Tony) Sandoval; her grandchildren Anthony 
(Raelene), Alicia (Manuel), Natalie, Richard, Daniel, Michele (Andres), 
David, Matthew, Gabrielle, Dominic, and Jessica (Jacob); her sister in 
law, Del Solan; as well as 25 greatgrandchildren, 9 
great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bernice was 
preceded in death by her husband Robert Sandoval, parents, Petra and 
Esquiel Solano; and her siblings, Rosie Silas, Marcy Silas, Paul Solano,
 Virginia Montoya, Lawrence Montoya, Rudy Solano, and JR. Solano.&nbsp;

Ruth M. Simpson was born on February 17, 1931, in Norton, Kansas, to Fred 
and Alpharetta (Whitney) Williamson. She passed away on February 13, 
2022, at Whispering Pines in Norton, Kansas, at the age of 90.
 On August 28, 1952, Ruth married Lucky Simpson in Lincoln, Nebraska.
 From 1953 through 1955, the couple lived in various places while Lucky
 was in the US Army. Ruth assisted Lucky in his Veterinarian Clinics in
 Blunt, South Dakota; Security, Colorado; and Hanna, Alberta, Canada. 
The couple then retired to Amsterdam, Missouri for nine years before 
moving back to Norton in 2008.
 Ruth is survived by sons: Ron (Dorothy) Simpson of Loveland, 
Colorado and Gary Simpson of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She was

Ruth M. Simpson

At 96, Norma “Ann” Round passed away peacefully in Weslaco, Texas, at the John Knox Health Center on Jan. 26, 2022.

On Aug. 30, 1925, Ann was born in Hoisington, to Tillie and Julius 
Reif. She grew up in Kansas and did all her schooling there. Ann had 
three sisters, Aileen Oliverius (Melvin), Ethel Schwein Hickey (Ben), 
and Lorraine Schwein Younger (Al), which all predeceased her.

At the age of 20, she married Charles Foresman. In 1963, she and 
Charles moved to the Rio Grande Valley to join a partnership in the 
construction business. Ann went to work for Sanborn’s Mexico Insurance 
and Travel Agency, which led to a 37-year career. When Charles died in 
1965, Ann decided to stay in the Valley. Her Sanborn’s employment led to
 the development and fulfillment of a passion for traveling 
worldwide—from Central and South America to Europe and Asia. She became 
an active member of the McAllen Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi during those 
years.

In 2002, she married Ronnie Round. They shared great love and devotion.

After
 living in McAllen for a few years, they built a home in John Knox 
Village of Weslaco, Texas. This new move came with a blessing, a very 
active social life. Ann and Ronnie enjoyed meeting new friends, 
enhancing relationships with old friends, playing bridge, and 
participating in non-stop social events. Ann also became an active 
member of the Weslaco PEO Chapter BW and the Mid Valley Book Club.

Ann always loved corresponding and getting photographs of her 
grandnieces and nephews. She also loved dancing, horseback riding, and 
needlepoint.

Ann is predeceased by her parents, sisters, and niece, Kimberly Schwein Spickard.

Ann leaves behind the love of her life, husband, Merrill D. “Ronnie” 
Round of Weslaco, Texas; her stepdaughter, Melodye Scoggins (Jackie) of 
McAllen, Texas; nephews Rickey Schwein (Lynda) of Rio Hondo, TX, and 
Leland R. Schwein ( Sunday) of Payson, Ariz., grand-nephews and 
grand-nieces Mike Schwein, Curt Schwein, Kerry Jayne, Debbie Schwein 
Perkins, Tammy Schwein Rowland, and Chad Schwein.

A Graveside Inurnment Service will be held Monday, February 28, 2022,
 at 1:00 p.m., in Hoisington City Cemetery, with Father Anselm Eke 
presiding.&nbsp;

Phillipsburg resident Arlynn Weinman passed away Feb. 16, 2022, in 
Phillipsburg at the age of 89.&nbsp; He was born Nov. 17, 1932, in Phillips 
County, the son of Mike &amp; Anna (Wagner) Weinman.

Survivors include his sons, Jon &amp; Roger of Phillipsburg &amp; 
Rodney of Saratoga, WY; 8 grandchildren &amp; numerous great 
grandchildren.

Cremation was planned.&nbsp; A memorial service will be held at a later date.
