ELLIS — Some moments come around once in 125 years.

 This spring, the Ellis Alumni Association will observe this momentous anniversary on May 22-23 to celebrate&nbsp; their past, present, and future. 

The Ellis Alumni Association&nbsp; is one of the oldest active alumnis in the state of Kansas. For over a century Ellis High School&nbsp; has shaped minds, built leaders and created a legacy&nbsp; that has stood the test of time. 

"We encourage&nbsp; and are thrilled to welcome alumni back to relive the hallways that shaped their future and catch up with friends who helped make their time at Ellis High School so memorable," said alumni president Sylvia Deutscher. "Again, honor classes are graduating classes ending in 1 and 6, but we encourage the other alumni community to join in as well."

As our dedicated historian volunteers worked to establish the EHS Alumni Museum, their research uncovered fascinating stories about the many paths EHS alumni have taken. 

While every career holds value and purpose&nbsp; a few stories stood out as especially&nbsp; memorable. Ellis Alumni Association announces plans for 125th anniversary

I don’t know about your house but the aftermath of the holidays can sure take a toll on my home organization. There are extra boxes and bags, that carton of something at the back of the fridge, and often, just too much stuff!

Karen Blakeslee, K-State food scientist and coordinator of the Rapid Response Center for food science, notes that this can be a great time to tackle cluttered cabinets, crowded refrigerators, and stuffed drawers.

In an article provided by K-State, Blakeslee says, “The start of the new year, everybody’s trying to get organized, clean things out, so why not start in the kitchen area and see what kind of mystery food you might have in your kitchen.”

Her advise is that if a utensil or gadget hasn’t been used in a year or more, it may be time to let it go. Extra items can be donated or passed along to college students or others who are just starting out.

Checking dates is another key step. Spices typically last six months to a year, and canned foods should be rotated so the oldest items are used first. High-acid canned foods, such as tomatoes and fruit, generally keep 12 to 18 months, while low-acid foods like vegetables and soups may last two to five years. Home-canned foods should be used within one year.

Refrigerators and freezers also need regular attention. Blakeslee recommends removing everything, cleaning shelves and drawers by hand and sanitizing surfaces with a mild bleach solution. Labeling and dating freezer items can help prevent forgotten leftovers from lingering too long.

“Things don’t last forever,” Blakeslee said. “But when you organize your kitchen in a way that makes sense, you can save money, reduce food waste and make cooking safer and less frustrating.”

One of my own goals is to go through the kitchen drawers and pantry cabinets to review, pare down, and reorganize. Oh yeah, and I’ll be checking all the labels in the fridge while I’m at it!

Three-day weather outlook

Developer ibV of Florida&nbsp;is requesting a conditional-use permit from Ellis County to erect solar panels in its&nbsp;Tallgrass Development in southwest Ellis County.

The facility would generate 175MW of power for the Southwest Power Pool energy market, connecting via ITC Great Plains’ 345-kilovolt Spearville-Post Rock transmission line.

Tallgrass Development will host two open house events at Gella’s venue room. They will be from noon to 2 p.m. and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22.

This will be in a station-type setting where community members can engage directly with the Tallgrass Development Team on specific areas of interest, such as engineering, environmental, community benefits and solar technology.

NW Kansas woman hospitalized after van rolls into a field

TREGO COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Tuesday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Nissan Rogue driven by Jordan Michael&nbsp;Schneider, 35, Collyer, was entering Interstate 70 one mile east of the Kansas 98 Junction. The driver was distracted by talking to the passenger. The SUV veered off the roadway, hit a guardrail and rolled onto its top facing southeast.

EMS transported Schneider and a 6-year-old female passenger to the Gove County Medical Center. Both were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

The Ellis County Commission approved a resolution increasing step salaries for elected officials for 2026 during its Tuesday meeting.

The adjustments follow a countywide pay study and a 2024 compensation policy, ensuring elected officials’ salaries remain competitive with market rates.

"This resolution is asking that all elected officials in the county move to that next step on the pay scale, just like all the other employees have moved at the start of this pay period," Darin Myers, county administrator, said.

The salaries of the county elected officials for 2026 are as follows:

County commissioner (Michael Berges, district one) - $20,746, up from $19,453 in 2025. County commissioner (Neal Younger, district two) - $21,584, up from $20,241 in 2025. County commissioner (Nathan Leiker, district three) - $20,746, up from $19,453 in 2025 County attorney&nbsp; - $171,184, up from $163,717 in 2025. County clerk - $86,840 plus an election stipend of $10,000, up from $83,055 in 2025, with the election stipend remaining unchanged. County treasurer - $81,828, up from $78,271 in 2025. Register of deeds - $94,536, up from $92,228 in 2025. County sheriff - $115,607, up from $110,573 in 2025.

Younger receives a higher salary because he is the longest-serving commissioner, Myers said. The county attorney received the highest salary increase at $7,467.

Consulting services for the Tallgrass Development solar project

The commission heard from Oleg Alba, managing partner of AcreStrong, about potentially providing consulting services for the proposed $275 million Tallgrass Development solar project in southwest Ellis County.

Alba said his firm helps counties navigate and negotiate complex agreements associated with large-scale projects. Commissioner Nathan Leiker asked about his background and experience.

"I've experience both from the finance perspective and from the field," Alba said. "I know what the field realities look like because one is understanding what these projects look like on a spreadsheet, but the other reality is what these projects look like for your constituents."

Myers said Alba could assist the county with negotiations and agreements related to the proposed project. A potential consulting agreement with AcreStrong will be placed on next week’s agenda.

"The three of us as commissioners recognize that we're not experts in doing this and we're looking for expert help to guide us on the best decision for our constituents," Leiker said.

Before the solar project can move forward, the commission needs to negotiate a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) agreement. Although these are very different projects, the PILOT for Buckeye Wind Farm was hundreds of thousands of dollars.&nbsp;

Commissioner Neal Younger was appointed chairman of the commission for 2026, with Commissioner Leiker appointed as vice chairman.

Younger was also appointed to the Northwest Kansas Community Corrections and Juvenile Services board, Leiker to the High Plains Mental Health board, and Michael Berges to the Ellis County Library board and the WorkForceONE chief elected official board.

The commission heard an update on the county's Rural Opportunity Zone status. Although the county was designated as one in 2021, changes in state law have made it no longer eligible for the program.

The commission approved a resolution to waive generally accepted accounting principles. This will not affect the county's ability to issue bonds in 2026.

The commission approved a resolution to update and formally establish a county policy for moving buildings, structures and other oversized loads on county roads.

The commission renewed the appointment of Ellis County EMS Director Danita Schroeder to the Region One EMS Council.

Bobbi Dreiling, county clerk, received approval and signage of the 2026 departmental inventory report.

Commissioners approved updated job descriptions for the public works department and the solid waste division.

Ellis County Commission adjusts salaries for 2026 elected officials

Blending fresh sushi and homemade Asian dishes, Saiko Asian Express is quickly carving out a place in Hays with affordable flavors.

Ceaser Vargas has lived in Hays for 20 years, but is originally from Mexico, bringing decades of restaurant experience in international foods as he comes from a family of restaurant owners.

"I've worked in American, Chinese, Italian, and Mexican restaurants," Vargas said.

Saiko opened Dec. 19 and has continued to see strong community support. Vargas said his restaurant stands out from other Asian eateries in the area because of its affordability and quality.

"We have the best prices," he said. "We cook with love and passion."

Its sushi menu features the Saiko roll, dragon roll, spicy tuna, spicy crab roll and sushi on a stick. Other Asian dishes include sweet and sour chicken, teriyaki chicken and beef, broccoli shrimp and rock shrimp.

Its most popular limited-time item is the Korean corn dog, available in spicy, regular and potato varieties. The dish comes with a flour-battered corn dog filled with cheese and sausage, deep-fried and finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.

"Nobody else has Korean corn dogs in Hays," Vargas said.

The building is undergoing interior remodeling to create an Asian-inspired, family-friendly atmosphere. Before opening Saiko, Vargas supplied sushi to nearby grocery stores in Russell and Hoisington.

In Mexico, Vargas has family members who operate sushi restaurants, while his parents own a taco shop that serves more than 500 customers each day.

"This is a product of what I've learned over 20 years working in restaurants," Vargas said.

Saiko is open from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with plans to expand to full-day service once employees are trained and ready to serve Hays.

Vargas said the restaurant plans to introduce daily promotions soon.

New Saiko Asian Express serves up fresh sushi in Hays

The Kansas Science Festival is returning to Downtown Hays on Sunday May 3rd. With astronomy viewing and additional events scheduled for Saturday May 2nd, the event brings two days of interactive experiences highlighting the worlds of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The festival invites K-12 students, families, educators, and community members from across Kansas to explore, question, and discover together. 

As part of a statewide initiative, the Kansas Science Festival is designed to demonstrate how STEM is accessible, engaging, and relevant for Kansans of all ages. Festival participants can explore a wide range of topics, including robotics, chemistry, ecology, astronomy, wildlife biology, health sciences, agricultural technology and more—illustrating how STEM intersects with nearly everything on our planet. Sunday event stations will spread along Main Street in Downtown Hays, from the Hays Public Library to STEM Harvest.

Kansas Science Festival Returns to Hays May 2026

Northwest Kansas’ new Crisis Intervention Center (CIC) will officially open its doors May 4, bringing urgently needed behavioral health treatment to a vast, underserved rural area. Owned and operated by High Plains Mental Health Center, the CIC provides 24/7/365 therapeutic and psychiatric care for adults experiencing mental health or substance use crises.

The CIC previously was expected to open March 2. Due to additional construction delays, planning has been adjusted to support a May 4 opening, and High Plains Mental Health Center remains committed to completing the project this spring.

The new facility will make it much easier for people to access needed treatment, offering professional care at the right time and in the right place – much closer to home. Access to prompt, specialized treatment will save lives and improve patient well-being, said Craig Poe, executive director.

“This facility will be a vital resource for individuals facing mental health and substance use crises. Too often, those in crisis find themselves in emergency rooms unequipped to provide the specialized care they need or, even worse, in jail due to a lack of appropriate alternatives,” Poe said. “The CIC will change that by offering immediate stabilization, treatment, and support in a safe, therapeutic environment that upholds the dignity of every individual.”

Currently, individuals needing psychiatric hospitalization must travel long distances to access needed services. Patients often end up in jails or emergency rooms due to lack of appropriate facilities and unfortunately face long delays (days or even weeks) for a state hospital bed. This delay in medical treatment often negatively impacts the patients’ well-being and strains service capacity for rural law enforcement agencies and hospitals.

“This facility will be huge for this region and our ability to provide services to those mental health consumers who need help, especially in times of crisis,” said Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler. “Law enforcement across the region have to respond to these calls. This facility will allow those patients to get treatment in a more timely manner.”

A grand opening with opportunities for community partners to tour the new CIC facility is tentatively planned for late April. More details will be announced soon via High Plains Mental Health Center’s website and social media platforms.

Located on the third floor of the Hadley office building in a secure wing, the CIC will be initially licensed for 16 beds, with physical capacity to expand to 23. The unit will offer medical and therapeutic treatment for mental health crises in addition to social detoxification for individuals with substance use challenges. The typical length of stay will be three days, with the ability to extend admissions as needed.

The CIC will accept voluntary patients, who choose to self-refer to the facility for treatment, and involuntary patients who are in law enforcement custody due to the severity of their symptoms. This facility is the first of its kind in western Kansas, operating under a new type of licensure approved in the State of Kansas in 2024. Clients will not receive a bill for services provided at the CIC.

Construction and development are ongoing and High Plains Mental Health Center Endowment is actively fundraising to support this life-saving project. Total project costs are approximately $7 million. Partial funding has been secured to help offset those costs, but community support is urgently needed, Poe said. All donations are tax-deductible.

Crisis Intervention Center will open for business May 4

Sunflower Electric Power Corporation announced plans to construct a new 345-kilovolt (kV)
transmission line as part of a regional effort to strengthen the electric grid and improve reliability during extreme
weather events.

In the 2024 Southwest Power Pool (SPP) Integrated Transmission Plan (ITP), SPP identified a critical need to strengthen
the regional transmission grid following severe winter storms such as Winter Storm Uri (2021) and Winter Storm Elliott
(2022). These weather events highlighted vulnerabilities in the grid during prolonged cold weather conditions and
underscored the importance of increased transmission capacity and resiliency.

To address these challenges, SPP directed Sunflower and partnering utilities to develop an approximately 360-
mile long, new 345-kV transmission line extending from Holcomb, Kansas, to Sidney, Nebraska. The project is designed
to enhance system resiliency, improve reliability during extreme weather, and support long-term regional energy needs.

“As we’ve seen during extreme winter weather events, a strong and resilient transmission system is essential to
maintaining reliable electric service,” said Steve Epperson, president and CEO of Sunflower. “This project is about
preparing the grid for the future and strengthening regional infrastructure to better withstand severe conditions.”

As part of this multi-utility project, Sunflower is responsible for constructing approximately 180 miles of the transmission
line within Kansas, running from Holcomb to the Kansas–Colorado state line near the South Fork Republican River. The
project will be co-owned by ITC Great Plains.

Sunflower is committed to a cooperative approach as the project moves forward and encourages public participation
throughout the planning phase. Beginning in January, Sunflower will host meetings with local community leaders and
elected officials, followed by a series of open houses in February for landowners, community members, and other
stakeholders. Additional details regarding open house locations, dates, and project updates will be shared on

The Russell County Road and Bridge Department will reduce a portion of Highway 40 to one lane, at the Pioneer/Old 40 transition curve, starting today through Wednesday, Jan. 14, for a culvert installation. Portable signal lights will be in place to direct traffic. Please reduce speeds within the construction area.

Also, the Russell County Road and Bridge Department will close a portion of 15th St., from 181st to 182nd St., starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, for bridge repairs. Repairs are expected to be completed by 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route and be mindful of construction in the area. For your safety and the safety of the workers, please obey signage and do not drive around barricades.

Portion of Highway 40 in Russell County to go to one lane for drainage work

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Liebenthal public water supply system located in Rush County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on January 12, 2026, and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of an equipment failure resulting in the city being unable to currently maintain the minimum required chlorine residual. Failure to maintain required chlorine residual levels may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

 </figure>TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Liebenthal public water supply system located in Rush County.Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:<ul>
 <li>Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.</li><li>Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.</li><li>If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.</li><li>Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.</li><li>Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.</li>
 </ul>The advisory took effect on January 12, 2026, and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of an equipment failure resulting in the city being unable to currently maintain the minimum required chlorine residual. Failure to maintain required chlorine residual levels may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.&nbsp;Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.For consumer questions, please contact the water system at 785-222-6122, or KDHE at 785-296-5514. Boil Water Advisory Issued for city of Liebenthal, Rush County

The Ellis County Commission will hear an update on the county's Rural Opportunity Zone status during its 8:30 a.m. meeting on Tuesday.

Although the county was designated as one in 2021, changes in state law mean it is no longer eligible for the program starting this year.

Designation under the program can help reduce the cost of living and provide financial incentives to new residents, including student loan repayment assistance and a five-year state income tax waiver.

The county must continue making payments to previously approved student loan program participants as long as they remain eligible.

Generally accepted accounting principles

The commission will be asked to approve a resolution requesting a waiver from generally accepted accounting principles.

If the county does not waive the standards, it would need to hire staff to manage the additional workload. Approving the waiver would not affect the county’s ability to issue bonds in 2026.

Commissioners will be asked to approve a resolution adjusting salaries for elected officials for 2026.

The commission will be asked to approve a resolution to update and formally establish a county policy for moving buildings, structures and other oversized loads on county roads.

The commission will be asked to renew the appointment of Ellis County EMS Director Danita Schroeder to the Region One EMS Council.

Bobbi Dreiling, county clerk, will request approval and signage of the 2026 departmental inventory report.

Commissioners will be asked to approve updated job descriptions for the public works department and the solid waste division.

Kansas crude prices post mixed messages, up two dollars on the week, but still hovering near five-year lows.&nbsp; Kansas crude prices spiked on Friday to post a two-dollar weekly gain.&nbsp; &nbsp; Kansas Common starts the week at $49.25 per barrel.&nbsp; Prices at CHS in McPherson dipped to five-year lows below $50, and stayed there, beginning in mid-November. Crude futures prices in New York also posted two percent gains Friday.

Year-end analysis by The Energy Information Administration shows global prices dropping from a monthly average of $79 per barrel in January to a low of $63 per barrel in December. That's the lowest monthly average for Brent crude since early 2021. The annual average last year was just $69 a barrel, which is the lowest since 2020. EIA estimates global production outpaced consumption all year, prompting one of the biggest inventory build-ups in 25 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Operators in Kansas drilled 781 wells to total depth last year, down 587 wells or 43% from the year before. Independent Oil and Gas Service reported Overall oilfield activity dropped 37%, and the number of active operators to drill a well was 189, down from 258 the year before. Operators here completed 18 wells this week including one wildcat well, and one service well in Ellis County.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service lists 14 active drilling rigs. Seven are east of Wichita, which is up two, and seven are in Western Kansas, which is down two. The statewide tally is down more than six percent from last month, and 22 percent lower than a year ago. Drilling was underway or about to begin on a lease in Russell County.

At 544 active rigs, the weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes drops by three oil rigs and one gas rig. Louisiana is down three rigs for the week; Utah is up four. Wyoming is down one; Colorado is up one.&nbsp; Texas, New Mexico and North Dakota each drop by one rig.

Over the long haul, the top three producers are reporting production increases despite declining rig counts. Texas is down 52 rigs from a year ago. North Dakota is down by ten rigs from the same week last year. New Mexico is down just three rigs, year-over-year. A few states are posting year-over-year increases. Louisiana is up ten rigs from a year ago. Utah is up six rigs. Ohio posts an increase of five rigs over last year.

US crude-oil production drops slightly this week but remains over 13.8 million.&nbsp; Production is a quarter million daily barrels higher than the same week last year.&nbsp; The Energy Information Administration reports the four-week average is also over 13.8 million barrels per day.

Commercial crude oil inventories (excluding those in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve) decreased by 3.8 million barrels from the previous week. At 419.1 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 3% below the five year average for this time of year.

The government adds another 200,000 barrels to the Strategic Petroleum Reserves, which now total more than 413 million barrels. That's an increase of nearly 20 million barrels or five percent in the last year.

Crude imports are up nearly 1.5 million barrels per day from last week at just under 6.4 million barrels a day.&nbsp; The four week average is down about ten percent from a year ago. Crude exports are up nearly a million barrels a day. Refined product exports beat last week by half a million barrels a day. Product exports surpass the tally a year ago by 1.4 million, and beat the year before that by two million barrels a day.
