Family, friends, and community members gathered at Hays High School on Wednesday, November 5, to celebrate Marisa Wasinger, Kansas FFA State Secretary, during her State Officer Hometown Celebration. The event recognized Wasinger’s year of leadership and service representing nearly 14,000 Kansas FFA members across the state.

The Kansas FFA State Officer Hometown Celebrations bring each of the six state officers back to their home chapters and communities, allowing them to share their experiences and express appreciation for those who have supported them throughout their journey.

Wasinger, a proud member of the Hays FFA Chapter, reflected on the meaning of returning home to celebrate with the community that helped shape her FFA experience.

“Going to my hometown was an amazing opportunity to get to see my family, friends, and supporters,” Wasinger said, “I really enjoyed seeing everyone that supports me and Hays FFA show up in such a great way.”

Johanna Anderes, with the Kansas FFA Foundation, shared that the State Officer Hometown Celebrations are a chance to bring state officers home to recognize the role their communities play in their success.

“These celebrations are a special opportunity to bring our officers home to share their experiences with the families and communities who have invested so much in them,” Anderes said. “With the busy schedules our state officers keep, it’s a meaningful time for them to reconnect and express appreciation for the local support that helped shape their journey.”

The evening was made possible through the generous support of Carrico Implement, Ellis County Conservation District, and Lewis Ford–Hays.

The Arc of Central Plains in Hays will debut the Recycled Reindeer Christmas Market, a festive twist on its annual fundraiser.

The market, featuring the Festival of Trees, combines its online auction with a new experience where shoppers can buy handmade holiday items on the spot.

"It's like going to a craft show. You can come in, you can find something you love, and you can take it home that day,"&nbsp;executive director of the Arc of Central Plains Kathy McAdoo said.

The market will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 14 and 15 at 229 W. 10th St., the former Home Event Center. <a href="https://arcofcentralplains.org/">The online auction opens Nov. 13 on The Arc of Central Plains website and closes at 6 p.m. Nov. 17</a>.

Exact auction items will be available to view once they go live.

"We've been working since February creating all of the really cool stuff that we're going to have available," McAdoo said.

The four day 24/7 auction will feature decorated Christmas trees along with other festive pieces, including wreaths.

The Recycled Reindeer Market will feature smaller home decor items priced as low as $5, along with homegrown goods from Harvest Hays, including pickled peppers, pickles, zucchini relish, lemon zucchini bread and tomatoes.

"I wouldn't go anywhere else looking for Christmas decorations. I would go here first," McAdoo said.

The volunteer-run fundraiser will donate all proceeds to Harvest Hays and the Arc Buffalo's Special Olympics team. In previous years, funds supported the now-completed Arc Park project.

McAdoo said she hopes to raise close to $10,000.

"The economy is much different this year. The community always supports us. They're very generous and I think it'll be a great year," she said.

The Arc of Central Plains Thrift Shop has already begun posting items on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ARCCPThrift">Facebook</a>&nbsp;page.

Hays ARC Recycled Reindeer Christmas Market, auction set for November

The Kansas Highway Patrol&nbsp;(KHP)&nbsp;held a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 22 commemorating the recent completion of a&nbsp;KHP&nbsp;aircraft hangar facility at the Hays Regional Airport.

This 6,800 square foot hangar facility was completed in May 2025 and includes hangar space, offices for the trooper pilots, and a conference room for training and flight planning. This project was a collaborative effort between the City of Hays and&nbsp;KHP, where the city managed construction and&nbsp;KHP&nbsp;assumed ownership of the facility at a cost of $1.7 million. The hangar will house multiple law enforcement aircraft and serve as a staging location for joint agency air support operations within the region. Hays is a strategic location for&nbsp;KHP’s&nbsp;Air Support Unit. In conjunction with aircraft bases in Wichita and Topeka, the Hays base affords statewide coverage.

“We would like to extend our appreciation to those who committed so much of their time and talent to making this partnership a reality,” said Colonel Erik Smith,&nbsp;KHP&nbsp;Superintendent. “The project is a model for interagency and intergovernmental cooperation.”

“Regional airports such as Hays provide vital and critical resources to local communities that reach far beyond air travel, especially when assisting with emergency response. These efforts often go unnoticed,” said Jamie Salter, Hays Regional Airport Director. “The collaborative nature of this project highlights the importance of partnership between governmental agencies to best service our communities.”

“The capabilities that&nbsp;KHP&nbsp;provides to local law enforcement is critical to rural communities like Hays,” said State Representative Ken Rahjes (Agra, Kansas). “We are grateful for the service of State Troopers in Western Kansas.”

KHP&nbsp;is the only entity in Kansas operating tactical law enforcement aircraft, providing vital support to local public safety agencies. The agency acquired its first aircraft in 1961 to patrol state highways and first established an aircraft base in Hays in 1979. In 2024,&nbsp;KHP&nbsp;flight crews in Hays were requested to assist local law enforcement agencies with numerous missions, including 17 manhunts, 23 vehicle pursuits, 19 searches for missing or endangered people, and three hazardous weather events involving endangered motorists.

KHP 2025-21: Kansas Highway Patrol held ribbon cutting ceremony

The City of Hays has launched an updated online utility bill payment system, offering residents new features designed to streamline monthly utility bill payments.

The update will allow for e-billing and introduce the option for reoccurring credit or debit card payments.

The new system is designed to provide residents with greater convenience and flexibility in managing their City of Hays utility accounts.

While the system has changed, the location to access the online payment portal remains the same, accessible via the <a href="https://cityofhaysks.municipalonlinepayments.com/cityofhaysks/utilities">HaysUSA.com</a> website.

“We understand that residents value convenience, and this new system delivers significant upgrades,” said City Clerk Jami Breit. “The ability to enroll in e-billing will help our community save paper, and the new feature for recurring card payments means customers can literally ‘set it and forget it.’ It's about providing simpler, more reliable options for everyone.”

The City of Hays emphasized that all customers who wish to continue paying online will be required to set up a new account in the updated system.

To register for the first time, residents will need their customer number and account number, both of which are printed on their utility bill.

Director of Finance Kim Rupp said the new system is a result of ongoing efforts to improve the resident utility bill pay experience.

“Our primary goal with this update was to simplify the process while maintaining a high standard of service,” Rupp said. “This streamlined interface is designed to be very user friendly. Additionally, we are introducing a new automated system for those who pay over the phone, further expanding accessibility.”

The city confirmed that several existing payment methods will continue without requiring customers to take action, including those who are already set up with auto-pay through a bank account.

Customers can also continue to pay in person at City Hall, 1507 Main St., or by using the drop boxes.

Payments are accepted by mail at P.O. Box 490, Hays, KS 67601.

City Hall hours for in-person payments are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

City of Hays launches new utility bill payment system

In the heart of our university lies a team that enables students to dream bigger, expect more, and achieve their educational aspirations: the Financial Aid Office. As the facilitators of access and affordability, these dedicated professionals navigate a complex landscape of federal regulations and ever-evolving technology. Their commitment goes beyond just numbers; it’s about creating opportunities for students who may otherwise encounter barriers to a college education.

Among these champions are three of the office’s most seasoned staff members—Chantelle Arnold, Robyn Hearne, and JoAnn Tomecek—who collectively boast 74 years of experience in financial aid. Their journeys illustrate resilience and an unwavering passion to serve students, with their close-knit team dynamics creating a supportive and collaborative work environment that extends across campus.

With 23 years of experience in financial aid and a degree in Communications, Robyn Hearne has formed a special bond with her colleagues. “I don’t have sisters. So, these people feel like my family,” she shared with heartfelt sincerity. What began as a role she never anticipated embracing has transformed into a fulfilling career that she describes as “addictive.” Each day on campus is a chance for Robyn to engage with students and provide them with the guidance they need to navigate the financial aid maze.

JoAnn Tomecek, a tenured veteran with 36 years’ experience and a degree in office administration, recognizes the responsibility that comes with their roles. “This is a good team. We’re here to serve the students,” she shared. The team’s mission is straightforward yet challenging: to ensure that each student receives their financial aid accurately and efficiently. They have tackled obstacles through a collaborative spirit, working to accelerate students towards their academic goals.

“Chantelle, Robyn, and I are all passionate about our jobs,” JoAnn continued. “We do all we can to understand the changes,” especially with evolving policies like federal FAFSA updates and new systems like Workday. Despite rapid changes in the financial aid landscape, JoAnn credited their adaptability and dedication to the success of their mission.

With her master’s degree in leadership, Chantelle Arnold emphasized the importance of student support systems, asserting their role as the final checkpoint before students embark on their college journey. The office has evolved significantly, streamlining communication methods and enhancing collaboration with other departments to make the financial aid process more integrated and efficient.

Their commitment goes beyond just numbers; it’s about creating opportunities for students who may otherwise encounter barriers to a college education.Among these champions are three of the office’s most seasoned staff members—Chantelle Arnold, Robyn Hearne, and JoAnn Tomecek—who collectively boast 74 years of experience in financial aid. Their journeys illustrate resilience and an unwavering passion to serve students, with their close-knit team dynamics creating a supportive and collaborative work environment that extends across campus.With 23 years of experience in financial aid and a degree in Communications, Robyn Hearne has formed a special bond with her colleagues. “I don’t have sisters. So, these people feel like my family,” she shared with heartfelt sincerity. What began as a role she never anticipated embracing has transformed into a fulfilling career that she describes as “addictive.” Each day on campus is a chance for Robyn to engage with students and provide them with the guidance they need to navigate the financial aid maze.JoAnn Tomecek, a tenured veteran with 36 years’ experience and a degree in office administration, recognizes the responsibility that comes with their roles. “This is a good team. We’re here to serve the students,” she shared. The team’s mission is straightforward yet challenging: to ensure that each student receives their financial aid accurately and efficiently. They have tackled obstacles through a collaborative spirit, working to accelerate students towards their academic goals.“Chantelle, Robyn, and I are all passionate about our jobs,” JoAnn continued. “We do all we can to understand the changes,” especially with evolving policies like federal FAFSA updates and new systems like Workday. Despite rapid changes in the financial aid landscape, JoAnn credited their adaptability and dedication to the success of their mission.With her master’s degree in leadership, Chantelle Arnold emphasized the importance of student support systems, asserting their role as the final checkpoint before students embark on their college journey. The Ellis County Historical Society and the Courtney-Spalding Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invite the public to a special presentation, “A Look Back at Walker Army Airfield Base,” featuring historian and U.S. Army veteran Steven Arthur. The event will take place on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Ellis County Historical Society, 100 W. 7th, Hays.

Arthur, a Fort Hays State University history graduate, retired library director, and current NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador, will share his research into the fascinating past of the Walker Army Airfield. 

His curiosity about the site began years ago—like many who have driven past the remains of the base and wondered about its story. What started as a model-building project for Forsyth Library became a three-year journey to uncover the airfield’s rich and largely forgotten history.

The event is free and open to the public. The museum’s south entrance is handicap accessible and includes an elevator.

This program is sponsored by the Ellis County Historical Society and the Courtney-Spalding Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, as part of the “America 250!” commemoration.

Local historian to present 'A Look Back at Walker Army Airfield Base' near Hays

The two incumbents re-elected Tuesday as Hays city commissioners said they believe the city is in good shape and that most residents agree with them.&nbsp;

Shaun Musil, with 1,772 votes, and Sandy Jacobs, with 1,542 votes, will return to office. They'll both serve four-year terms. 

Newcomer David Vilaysing was the third highest vote-getter at 1,340 votes and will serve a two-year term. Incumbent Reese Barrick was in fifth place with 1,137 votes.&nbsp;

Results are unofficial until canvassed by the Ellis County Commission on Nov. 12. Voter turnout was 22.56%.

Musil, 53, and an account representative for Nex-Tech, has served on the commission for 12 years. He has lived in Hays for 30 years.

Musil was at the Ellis County Administration Center as the ballots were brought in to be counted. 

He thanked his supporters and said he "feels very blessed."

"You've got to listen to people and learn from those who don't like what you're doing. ... We need to adjust some things, but I think we're on the right path," Musil said.&nbsp;

 He also hinted at future growth for the city.

"I think there's some really good things on the horizon that people are going to be very excited about," he said.

Jacobs, 75, a retired banker and Hays native, was also checking the ballot returns in person.

She's served eight years on the commission and wants to see the R9 long-term water project completed.

"I really appreciate the confidence that the community has continued to put into me," Jacobs said.

She talked about other things she wants to accomplish.

"Retail is really high on my list, and the workforce needs some attention," Jacobs said, noting that new projects are underway in both areas.

Vilaysing, 43, recently retired from the Hays Police Department after serving 19 years, was not at the administration center. 

He was monitoring vote results from Oklahoma, where&nbsp;he was teaching a course to first responders about  effective communication and leadership skills with his new company DXI Training Solutions.

Vilaysing said he was "a little surprised" at being elected and was "very eager to get to work," even as he expects to have to make adjustments to his out-of-town travel and work schedules to attend commission meetings.

He believes his law enforcement background and familiarity with city operations were key to his election.

Top issues Vilaysing said must be addressed include a secure water supply source and more affordable housing.&nbsp;

"Getting the R9 project finished and seen through is a 50- to 75-year resource. We need a permanent solution, if that means fighting the regulations at the state level," he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The commissioners will be sworn into office on Jan. 8, the first regular meeting of 2026. The governing body will also be reorganized.

The other two city commissioners who were not up for re-election are Alaina Cunningham and Mason Ruder.

Water, retail, housing top issues for newly elected Hays city commissioners

A group of passionate volunteers, business owners, and donors worked hard to make this the most magical holiday season Downtown Hays has ever seen. The 2025 Christmas Magic on Main initiative will bring more lights, more memories, and more&nbsp;free family fun&nbsp;than ever before — all to celebrate the spirit of the season in The Bricks.

$1 Million Prize Honors Colleges Achieving Strong Student Results, Both in College and After Graduation

Washington D.C. - The Aspen Institute named Fort Hays Tech | North Central as one of the 200 institutions eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s premier recognition of high achievement and performance among two-year colleges. The 200 colleges were selected based on their student outcomes data, including retention, completion, transfer, and bachelor’s attainment rates. Started in 2010, this is the ninth cycle of the Aspen Prize.

Together, these 200 colleges represent the breadth and diversity of the two-year college sector. They are located in urban, rural, and suburban areas across the country and serve anywhere from a few hundred students to tens of thousands. Some of these colleges focus primarily on workforce programs, while others focus on transfer and bachelor’s attainment or a combination of the two.

“The Aspen Prize rewards colleges that achieve the kind of outcomes that actually matter to students—completing college degree programs that, in turn, lead to lifelong success,” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. “Aspen Prize winners offer a powerful message: Community (two-year) colleges can deliver the kind of life-changing education that makes the American Dream real.”

Two-year colleges educate nearly six million students. Yet their student outcomes often fall short in both the rate at which students graduate and the percentage of students who achieve success after graduation. The Aspen Prize process identifies and celebrates two-

year colleges that demonstrate that achieving stronger outcomes is possible, providing a roadmap of effective practices and strategies for other colleges to follow.

The 200 eligible colleges have been invited to submit an application and participate in a rigorous review process that will culminate in the naming of the Aspen Prize winner in spring 2027. Over the coming 20 months, the colleges that apply for the Aspen Prize will be assessed based on (1) student outcomes data, ranging from student transfer and completion rates to employment and wages after graduation and (2) whether they have engaged in scaled practices that led to high and improving student outcomes.

“Among these 200 colleges are some really special places that deliver strong and improving outcomes for students across the board,” Wyner said. “Our job over the coming 20 months is to gather a lot more data and work with a deep bench of field experts to assess which of these 200 stand out so we can not only honor them with a monetary award, but drive attention to the most effective field practices that other colleges can replicate.”

This year, in addition to publicly available federal data, over 600 colleges authorized the use of National Student Clearinghouse data on their institution’s degree completion, transfer, and bachelor’s attainment rates for full- and part-time students.

Fort Hays Tech | North Central has been nominated for this award every year since the inception of the Aspen Prize. The list of two-year colleges in Kansas nominated for the award this year is as follows:

Fort Hays Tech | North Central named as college eligible for Aspen Prize

Recently, local historians and metal detectorists Denis Vine and Gordon Solomon packed the museum when they shared a 7th Cavalry artifact PowerPoint with Trego County Historical Society guests. What a thrill to listen to their stories!

I love people whose imaginations allow them to think about this region sans section lines, county roads, state highways, I-70, neon lights, gas stations and quick shops, utility poles, and other modern development. Every attendee avidly imagined life’s difficulties with limited communication and supplies.

Once the government began building railroads and offering homesteads, military squads, platoons and companies frequently camped nearby to protect crews and settlers. Those troops required water and game so they identified creeks, rivers, and springs to establish location and supplies. If there was water, game used it too which simplified providing camp meat and forage. 

It also intensified resource competition with native occupants. While occupying stations for weeks or months, soldiers used canned and bottled goods, wore out their clothing and tack, and occasionally lost curry combs, knives or razors.

To find left behind artifacts, metal-detecting historians study old documents, maps, and the landscape to identify potential sites. Some share information so others can further research an area. As a bonus, relic hunters often discover communal trash pits full of bottles.

Following retirement, Denis and Gordon turned their inner history hunters loose, finding cans, tack, bullets, knives, military equipment like epaulets, buttons, cross sabers from hats, and more. They’ve also dug trash pits filled with tossed cans and bottles. According to Denis, cans offer a chance to familiarize the finder with specific soldiers roaming the prairies.

He noted industry canned food soldiers carried into isolated regions without supply depots. Unfortunately, no one had yet invented p-38 or p-51 can openers. As a result, these guys used knives or perhaps axes to access peaches and other canned goods. Looking at the artifacts, some cut the lid into quarters and peeled back edges to access contents. Others cut or chopped around edges until they could bend the left, right, top or bottom side enough to reach paydirt. 

You clearly saw patterns troopers used to open their can and could assume the same guy opened any container sharing such characteristics.

In addition to finding cans at former camps, Denis and Gordon have detected scores of buttons. Most are military but not always. They commented that either soldiers didn’t know how to sew buttons securely or they had weak thread. I’m guessing a combination of both resulted in thousands of U.S. Army buttons peppering miles of Kansas prairie. Some of their discoveries still had fabric attached to the shank, triggering guesses as to what happened. Possibilities multiplied the longer folks thought.

This presentation made me wonder about young men who joined the military and came West so soon after the Civil War. Our nation needed to rebuild financially and physically, so for many enlistees military life offered steady pay, regular meals, uniforms and transportation.

 In addition to U.S. citizens, immigrants enlisted to serve their new homeland. It’s not surprising to search military cemeteries or records and find Irishmen and Germans among Iowans, Missourians and other U.S. enlistees.

Few absolute answers exist to answer questions about men who spent months and sometimes years protecting this prairie we call home. We do know they opened cans without a can opener and more than a good share performed their job missing buttons.

The Morland Community Foundation, in conjunction with the city of Morland, is pleased to announce we are nearing completion of phase 1 at our Veterans' Memorial in the city park in Morland, Kansas.

This project began with an idea from Vietnam Veteran Sgt. Ray Toll. Ray served honorably in the central region of Vietnam until he was wounded by a sniper round while crossing a rice paddy.

Ray received a Purple Heart and was discharged shortly after. Ray has been the inspiration and driving force behind this project. He has never wavered in his dedication; the man simply has no "give up."

Our project has taken over three years to get to this point and will continue into the future.

Ray made a wooden model of this project and took it to multiple events to show the public what we were going to build.

He even utilized the help of his granddaughter, Wynter, to help work the display stands and booths at local events to promote our project.

We have implemented a "buy a brick" program where anyone can purchase a brick and have a veteran's name, rank and place of service sandblasted into a brick, that brick will then be display on a raised platform in our park with other veterans.

We include current active-duty military members and veterans in our memorial. Anyone who served or is serving can have an honorable place in our memorial.

Our dedication ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Incumbents Shaun Musil, a Nex-Tech employee, and Sandy Jacobs, a retired banker, were the top two vote-getters for the Hays City Commission, according to the unofficial results from Tuesday's local election.&nbsp;

The third open seat will go to newcomer David Vilaysing. A retired officer with the Hays Police Department and owner of DXI Training Solutions for first responders, Vilaysing beat out the remaining candidates, including incumbent Reese Barrick.

Musil and Jacobs will serve four-year terms while Vilaysing will serve a two-year term.
