TOPEKA – Hays High’s Izabel Schmidt wrapped her illustrious high school career with a second-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle and placed third in the 100 yard freestyle at the 5-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Capital Federal Natatorium. Schmidt was also a part of two relays the placed in the final day of the competition Saturday.

It's the second year in-a-row that Schmidt has finished runner-up in the 50 free to Hillsboro’s Lauryn Vogt who has won the event three-straight years and set a new state meet record Saturday with a time of 23:39. Schmidt finished at 24:17.

Schmidt finished third in the 100 free for a second-straight year. Vogt was the winner with a time of 50:28. Wichita Trinity Academy’s Alexa Howard finished second at 51:92 with Schmidt at 52:91.&nbsp;

Schmidt was fourth in both the 50 and 100 as a sophomore and was sixth in 100 as a freshman and seventh in the 50. She owns seven school records (50 free, 100 free, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 200 individual medley, 500 free, 100 breaststroke). Her breaststroke record (1:11.13) was just set at the Western Athletic Conference meet last week.

Schmidt along with Jaylen Hughes, Lucy Tippy and Breckyn Wahlmeier were a part of two state qualifying relays. The 200 yard freestyle team finished fifth with a time of 1:45.06. The 400 yard freestyle placed eighth with a time of 3:55.23, four seconds faster than their Friday preliminary time.

The Indians finished eighth in the team standings with 90 points. Andover won the title with 304 points outdistancing second place Blue Valley Southwest who tallied 276.5.

The Merci Boxcar will be open for tours on Memorial Day following the American Legion Memorial Day service which begins at 10 a.m. Monday May 25 in Veterans Park, 13th and Haney.

The Merci Boxcar was a gift from France after World War II and is operated by the Hays Voiture 1543 Society.&nbsp;The Society of 40 Men and 8 Horses is the veterans group which manages the Merci Boxcar. 

People are invited to come and tour the boxcar after the Memorial Day service.

The society invites all veterans to join the 40 and 8, and non-veterans are invited to join the Friends of the Kansas Merci Boxcar and Museum Society.

The city of Hays is facing a potential 50% cut to the Essential Air Service federal funds awarded to its commercial airline carrier, SkyWest/United, Mayor Sandy Jacobs announced during Thursday's city commission meeting.&nbsp;

The Trump administration's 2026 budget proposal includes a 50% cut to the program, which began in 1978.

"That would absolutely wipe us out in this community. I don't know how we would move forward," Jacobs said. "Without it, we would not have commercial service in Hays."

"For us, to make that up, we would have to increase our mill levy from 25 to 44. That's almost double the mills just to cover that annual subsidy," said Mason Ruder, vice-mayor.&nbsp;

Jacobs and the other commissioners have contacted Hays' congressional delegation in Washington, D.C., encouraging them to oppose the proposed cut.&nbsp;

"The airport is a huge economic impact for Hays and the region," Ruder said. "Without commercial air service, you would have to drive four hours to get to Kansas City, Wichita or Denver for a commercial flight."

Commissioners also encouraged local residents and business leaders to contact national leaders with their concerns.

"This is huge for all of us, and it's important to take our time to contact all our representatives," said Reese Barrick, commissioner, who read off office phone numbers for Sens. Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall and Rep. Tracy Mann.

"I think it's important for the Trump administration to find ways to cut wasteful spending," said Commissioner Shaun Musil, "but this is not wasteful, kind of like our water (federal BRIC grant) that got cut. 

"... This keeps Hays relevant. We have doctors that fly in to perform services. We have international students at Fort Hays State University."

SkyWest receives an annual $6.5 million subsidy for commercial flight service in Hays.&nbsp;

Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal and Salina airports also utilize the&nbsp;U.S. Department of Transportation Essential Air Service program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The 22-year-old deteriorating crosswind runway at Hays Regional Airport will be reconstructed next spring. 

The crosswind runway&nbsp;4-22 and the main runway 16-34 will both have to be shut down for three weeks as the work is done. Major users of the airport have been notified, although the start date is not yet finalized. Helicopter operations will still be allowed.

City commissioners unanimously approved a low bid of $6,676,180 to&nbsp;Smoky Hill, Salina, for the project during their meeting Thursday. They also approved a construction engineer services agreement with Lochner, Lenexa, for $445,800.

The Federal Aviation Administration will pay for 95% of the $7.5 million project. The city's cost share will be 5%, or $356,000.

Hays is eligible for the FAA funding thanks to record airport boardings and participation by its commercial carrier, SkyWest/United, in the Essential Air Service program.&nbsp;

In other business, commissioners approved a rezoning request, final plat and annexation for Covenant Estates 1st Addition. The 20-acre housing project is in northwest Hays&nbsp;west of Thunderbird between 33rd and 41st streets.

The plat is comprised of three city blocks with 54 lots. 

The developer, Covenant Land &amp; Developing, Inc., plans to plat, rezone and annex the remaining 55 acres of property lying to the north of Phase 1 in phases from south to north during the next few years. 

The following board appointments recommended by the mayor were approved:

A 20-minute executive session was declared at the end of the meeting for matters covered under attorney/client privilege. No action was taken.

👟 Monarchs qualify four more for state

PUEBLO, Colo. - The Fort Hays State men's and women's track and field teams saw another school record go down Friday on day two of the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.

Nolan Churchman broke his own school record in the decathlon by 139 points with a 10-event total of 7,360, finishing in fifth place to earn a spot on the All-American podium. After compiling a personal-best 4,035 points on day one, the senior wrapped up his career with three outdoor personal bests on Friday. He opened the day with a personal-best 15.19 in the 110m hurdles to collect 827 points before adding a personal best in the discus (128-9, 649 points) and an outdoor PR in the pole vault (15-1, 790 points). Churchman then accumulated 1,059 points across the final two events (javelin throw - 150-10 - 529 points, 1,500m run - 5:05.30 - 530 points).

The performance helped Churchman earn his eighth All-American trophy, including seven in multi-events (four heptathlon, three decathlon) and one in a relay. The Saint George, Kan. native posted outdoor or wind legal personal bests in five of the 10 events, including the 100m dash, high jump, 110m hurdles, discus and pole vault.

After breaking the school record in the discus throw earlier this season (160-2, 48.81m), Emma Slade placed 13th at the national meet with a top heave of 153-2. The freshman recorded that mark on her first attempt before adding a toss of 144-11 on her third attempt. She was one of only two freshman in the field of 22 competitors at the championship event.

 </figure>FHSU AthleticsPUEBLO, Colo. - The Fort Hays State men's and women's track and field teams saw another school record go down Friday on day two of the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.Nolan Churchman broke his own school record in the decathlon by 139 points with a 10-event total of 7,360, finishing in fifth place to earn a spot on the All-American podium. After compiling a personal-best 4,035 points on day one, the senior wrapped up his career with three outdoor personal bests on Friday. He opened the day with a personal-best 15.19 in the 110m hurdles to collect 827 points before adding a personal best in the discus (128-9, 649 points) and an outdoor PR in the pole vault (15-1, 790 points). Churchman then accumulated 1,059 points across the final two events (javelin throw - 150-10 - 529 points, 1,500m run - 5:05.30 - 530 points).The performance helped Churchman earn his eighth All-American trophy, including seven in multi-events (four heptathlon, three decathlon) and one in a relay. The Saint George, Kan. native posted outdoor or wind legal personal bests in five of the 10 events, including the 100m dash, high jump, 110m hurdles, discus and pole vault.After breaking the school record in the discus throw earlier this season (160-2, 48.81m), Emma Slade placed 13th at the national meet with a top heave of 153-2. The freshman recorded that mark on her first attempt before adding a toss of 144-11 on her third attempt. 👟 Churchman shatters FHSU decathlon record at D2 Outdoor Championships

Bernetha 'Bea' Leiker, 91, Winfield, died Thursday, May 22,
2025 at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

She was born December 23, 1933 in Hays, the daughter of
Joseph and Catherine (Kronewitter) Boos.&nbsp;
Bernetha graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1951.&nbsp; On June 3, 1952 she was united in marriage to
Herbert L. “Herb” Leiker in Hays and they celebrated 50 years of marriage
before he preceded her in death on May 6, 2003.&nbsp;
She was a cook and waitress for many years, starting as a potato chip
maker and at Daylight Donuts in Hays, then being the cook at Graham County
Hospital for over twenty years, then as a dishwasher at the Country Kitchen in
Hays, just to keep busy after her retirement.&nbsp;


Time with her children and grandchildren meant everything to
Bernetha and she loved having fun with them.&nbsp;
She and Herb enjoyed polka dancing, wedding dances, with the Tennessee
Waltz being her favorite.&nbsp; She enjoyed
playing pinochle and was a wonderful cook and baker, with her kitchen cookie
jar always full of treats for her family.&nbsp;
She loved her dog Gizzy, traveling with her family, motorcycle trike
rides, and relished every moment of getting chosen to be the flower girl at her
granddaughter’s wedding just a few years ago.&nbsp;
She was truly an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother, and will be
dearly missed.

Survivors include three sons, Mike Leiker and wife Ruth of
Hays, Tim Leiker and wife Dot of Elkhart, and Steve Leiker of Russell, a
daughter, Barbara Moore and husband Bruce of Winfield, 12 grandchildren, 21
great grandchildren, and 1 great great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Sue
Trimble, four sisters, and three brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday,
May 28, 2025 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church with Fr. Damian Richards
officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St.
Francis Cemetery, Munjor.&nbsp; Visitation
will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on
Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm
on Tuesday at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Andrea Marie Wildeman (Woods), 82 passed away
on April 29, 2025, at Sheridan County Long Term care in Hoxie, KS. 

She was born March 21, 1943,
in Gypsum, KS. Andrea was the only child of Andrew and Charlotte (Flessa) Woods.
Andrea attended and graduated from Gypsum high school in 1961. Andrea received
a Bachelor in Education with an emphasis in English from Kansas Wesleyan
University in 1965 and her master's in library science from Emporia University
in 1978. Andrea also returned to school later in life and received a Master’s
in Counseling from Fort Hays State University. She taught and was the school
Librarian in Norton, KS for several years before marrying Leroy and moving to
Hoxie. After obtaining her counseling degree she worked for the Hoxie School
system as both a High School and Grade School Counselor. 

Andrea married Leroy
Wildeman on June 1, 1985. She joined Leroy and his two children, Paula and Galen,
and formed a family. Andrea had a heart for Jesus. She freely gave to anyone
that was in need, especially her family and friends. &nbsp; She enjoyed cross
stitch, reading and watching the chiefs and game shows.&nbsp; &nbsp; Andrea is
survived by her children Paula Marchbanks and her husband, Charles, Galen
Wildeman and his wife, Sondra, granddaughter Lindsey Marchbanks, grandsons
Nick, Logan and Carter Yates and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; In
particular, Andrea would want to acknowledge her niece, Jackie Waldman, for
being a second daughter and providing her the love and support she did for so
many years. 

A mass of Christian
burial is planned for June 6, 10:30 AM at the St. Frances Cabrini Church, Hoxie
KS. A visitation is planned for June 5, 3-7 pm with a wake starting at 7
pm.&nbsp;

Cecilia Pfannenstiel, age 94 of Hays, Kansas died Wednesday May
21, 2025, at The Good Samaritan Society – Hays.

Cecilia was born on September 12, 1930, in Hays to Peter C. and
Anna (Karlin) Leikam. She was raised and educated in Hays attending Hays high
school, and in 1948 was united in marriage to Francis J. Pfannenstiel.

She had a great love for her family and friends and enjoyed
spending time and visiting them in her home, even if they had to compete with
her TV being set at volume 11 during those visits. Cecilia always spoke her
mind, mostly without a filter, and played by her own set of rules.

If an award could be given for channel surfing, mom would have
earned it. The longest she stayed on each channel was 8 seconds, and that was
during the PRCA bull riding competition.

Cecilia is survived by her husband, Francis; daughter, Sheri
(Charlie) Rohr of Hays; sons: Bob (Darla) of Broken Arrow, OK, Rick (Barb) of
Hays, Randy (Debbie) of Hays, and Scott (Nikki) of Hays. 11 grandchildren, 19
great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded by her parents, brothers: Bob, Eddie, Alvin, and
Joe. Sisters: Freda Sanders, and Patricia Thomas.

Funeral Services will be Saturday May 24, 2025, at 11:00 AM at
Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory – Brock’s Chapel, 2509 Vine Street Hays,
Kansas 67601. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time at the
funeral chapel. Interment will follow the services in the St Joseph Catholic
Cemetery – Hays.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The Humane Society

If low stratus clouds persist across a larger area of western Kansas this afternoon, the slight risk area may be adjusted to a smaller region than the current forecast.

Today's high is expected to reach 67, with a low of 52. Showers are likely Saturday through the night, with a high of 62 and a low of 51. Rain is also likely Sunday during the day, with a high near 61 and a low of 48.

Showers are expected to continue through Memorial Day, with a chance of nighttime thunderstorms. The high is forecast to be 61 and the low 46.

Tuesday will see a short break from the rain with mostly cloudy skies. It will be followed by a possible chance of showers and thunderstorms at night, with a high of 68 and a low of 50.

Ellis County under slight risk of severe thunderstorms today; rain through weekend

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF3 tornado hit Grinnell Sunday night, with peak winds of 140 mph and a damage path 230 yards wide.

The storm damaged or destroyed over a dozen homes, downed 15 power poles, and hit electric and gas systems. Despite the destruction and displaced families, no injuries were reported.

Red Cross Kansas helping out in Grinnell tornado aftermath

Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas is providing emergency and long-term support after the tornado that hit Grinnell. Backed by donor support and a $25,000 grant from Catholic Charities USA, the group is helping families access aid and begin recovery.

– The TMP-Marian baseball team will be the three-seed at next week’s 2-1A State
Baseball Championship at the Great Bend Sports Complex in Great Bend. The
Monarchs will open with Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan in the fourth and final
state quarterfinal game on Thursday, May 29.

brings a 24-5 record into their second straight state tournament appearance and
18th overall. They defeated Ell-Saline, Ellinwood and Ellis at their own regional to advance.

The
Panthers are 16-9 and defeated Pleasanton, Marmaton Valley and Arma-Northeast
in the Humboldt regional, outscoring the three opponents 37-1. They are
making their fifth straight state tournament appearance. They won the state

⚾ Monarchs 3-seed at 2-1A state, open with Colgan

Start your Saturday with the fresh flavors of the Downtown Hays Market, where local goods and small-town charm come together under one roof.

The market will take place from 7:30 to 11 a.m. every Saturday from May 24 through Oct. 18 at the Downtown Hays Pavilion, 117 E. 10th St.

Andrew Taylor, board president of the Bricks in Downtown Hays, said the market will feature about 50 vendors selling produce, meats, baked goods and artwork.

"It started as a farmers market, but it has expanded into incorporating those staples and other types of vendors like DIY and crafts," Taylor said.

The market, organized by the Bricks in Downtown Hays, will accept SNAP and provide Double Up Food Bucks, helping low-income families stretch their food budgets while supporting local farmers and producers.

All reserved vendor spots are filled, but non-reserved spaces are still available for $50 for those interested in joining the market. Vendors ready to sell include:

"While it takes place in the heart of downtown Hays, it is a collaboration of many different individuals across western Kansas that bring some of this produce to our community," Taylor said.

Customers can expect homegrown fruits and vegetables, farm-fresh eggs, plants and fresh honey.

The pavilion can accommodate 22 reserved vendor spots, while larger trailers and food trucks will be along 10th Street. Local musicians occasionally perform at the market but are not scheduled at set times.

Taylor said vendor turnout varies throughout the season. Every vendor is present some weeks, while others may see fewer vendors, depending on the time of year.

Special events will take place during the market, including <a href="https://www.downtownhays.com/bazaar-on-the-bricks">Bazaar on the Bricks</a> on July 26 and the Thunder on the Plains Car Show on June 14, which, while not an official market event, coincides with it.

Additional events include <a href="https://www.downtownhays.com/wines-steins">Wines and Steins on the Bricks in Downtown Hays</a> on Sept. 14 and the <a href="https://www.downtownhays.com/farm-to-fork-dinner">Farm to Fork Dinner</a>, the date of which has yet to be announced.

"It is a fantastic way to start the weekend," Taylor said. "A great way to bring people downtown and spend time in what I consider one of the biggest assets our community has to offer."

12th-annual Downtown Hays Market kicks off Saturday

The American Legion Post 173 in Hays will host a Memorial Day service at Veterans' Park, 13th and Haney, on Monday, May 26.

The program begins at 10 a.m. and will feature music by Trilogy, a keynote address by the Department Commander of the Kansas American Legion with the color guard provided by local VFW members.

Some seating will be provided. You can also bring your own chair.

Memorial Day is a day that we pay our respect to all veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to those who have "gone before." Help us pay homage to those who have paid the ultimate price.

I have always appreciated the great impact of school psychologists, and I’m proud of each of our FHSU grads who strive to give back to their communities through this essential service. FHSU’s 2025 Lighthouse award winner, Allyson Baloga, exemplifies the spirit of supporting children, parents, and their school systems as she looks forward to launching her career as a school psychologist.

Allyson was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and grew up in Belle Plaine, Kansas, south of Wichita, and then later in Wichita.

 She earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Wichita State University. “I had a class with a professor who talked about the school-to-prison pipeline, and that was probably the best thing I learned,” Allyson said. “I decided that for me, personally, the place I could have the most impact wasn’t going to be in the criminal justice system. I needed to work on the education side if I was going to change this dynamic.”

However, Allyson’s transition from a career in the criminal justice field to education would have to wait several years. She met and married her husband, Ben, an Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician stationed at McConnell Air Force Base. She also went to work as a mental health case manager, helping children with severe emotional disturbances and supporting teachers, parents, doctors, and community providers to ensure they got the care they needed. She also met a school psychologist while working as a case manager.

“She was so amazing and generous with her time and expertise. She let me ask her questions and tag along like a puppy,” Allyson said. She went home the first day after meeting the school psychologist and told her husband that this was the work she was fated to pursue.

About the time Allyson decided to go back to school and pursue a master’s degree, Ben let her know he had just received orders to his next duty station in Alaska. Marriage and family were Allyson’s first priorities. With their two young sons in tow, the Balogas headed to Elmendorf, Alaska.

“We spent eight years in Alaska, and once my youngest started kindergarten, I decided it was time for me to dive back into my education and career,” Allyson said.

She began looking for an online master’s program in school psychology and found Fort Hays State University. She reached out to some practicing school psychologists through Facebook and liked what they had to say about the program. She then contacted Assistant Professor Angie Howard in the FHSU Department of Psychology, little knowing that Angie would go on to play a pivotal role as a mentor for Allyson during her graduate degree experience. 

The more she&nbsp;got to know the online program and the faculty she spoke with, the more she liked the idea of restarting her educational journey at FHSU. “It turned out it was fate,” Allyson said. “I just knew this was the program for me.”

While unmatched affordability played a big role in Allyson’s decision to pursue her master’s degree in school psychology at FHSU, the supportive professional culture she found at the university made all the difference. “I still can’t believe the education that you get at FHSU. It’s the people at FHSU who make the difference. This whole university community cares about you.”

Eight years after she decided to pivot from criminal justice to school psychology, Allyson is poised to start doing the work she feels she was destined to do. “I think the preventive care that I’ve been trained to deliver as a school psychologist, the nurturing element, is what will make that difference for the children I will serve, and for me,” Allyson said.

She is drawn to working through what amounts to a great big puzzle when finding solutions for kids in need. “I enjoy the challenge of figuring out their needs and how teachers, parents, other specialists, and compassionate people in the community can best support our kiddos. I love the fact that it’s never the same day twice.”

This academic year, she completed a 600-hour practicum and will begin a 1,200-hour internship in Minot Public Schools next fall. Allyson explained why in-depth field experiences are essential elements in the FHSU school psychology graduate program: “School psychologists are relied upon to know laws and regulations. We also depend upon them for our expertise in child development theory and practice, assessments, and knowing how children learn and develop, and the impact of childhood illnesses and developmental challenges.”

As a graduate student, she co-authored a professional article featured in Communique’, the journal of the National Association of School Psychologists. She has testified before the Kansas House of Representatives’ Committee on Health and Human Services on behalf of legislation that would expand access to school psychology services by allowing professionals in the field the ability to practice across state borders. She also served as a leader with the National Association of School Psychologists and as a FHSU Online Student Government Association member.

People like Professor Howard and Director Amy Drinnon were always there to support and challenge this online student from far-off North Dakota."
