Ways to support Grinnell tornado relief efforts

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF3 tornado hit Grinnell Sunday night, with peak winds of 140 mph and a damage path 230 yards wide.

The storm damaged or destroyed over a dozen homes, downed 15 power poles, and hit electric and gas systems. Despite the destruction and displaced families, no injuries were reported.

The following is a list of organizations and community efforts offering support to those affected by the storm and ways you can help.

Relief fund for Grinnell tornado set up by Gove County Community Foundation

Many families and businesses are beginning cleanup after Sunday night’s tornado. The Heartland Community Foundation donated $1,000 to the new Neighbors Helping Neighbors Fund at the Gove County Community Foundation, which will offer immediate and long-term support.

Donations can be made to the fund online or by mailing a check to GNWKCF, 103 W. Fourth St., Bird City, KS 67731.

Red Cross Kansas helping out in Grinnell tornado aftermath

The American Red Cross is in Grinnell to provide assistance and supplies to those affected. A spokesperson said the Red Cross is coordinating with local officials to meet community needs for shelter, food, health services and other support.

Residents needing assistance or information can call 1-800-RED CROSS (733-2767), 24 hours a day.

Catholic Charities responds to Grinnell tornado, shares how public can help

Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas is providing emergency and long-term support after the tornado that hit Grinnell. Backed by donor support and a $25,000 grant from Catholic Charities USA, the group is helping families access aid and begin recovery.

Grinnell tornado relief - Russell Sale Barn

Russell Sale Barn LLC will be donating a butcher steer to the Grinnell Locker. This hamburger will be made available to those who suffered from the tornado on May 18.

GoFundMe - Thomsen Customs

Thomsen Customs, a laser engraving business, is raising funds for tornado relief in Grinnell. The business donating 25% of all orders to the city or accepting direct donations.

Hays Recreation Commission Opening Day

The Hays Recreation Commission will accept free-will monetary donations for Grinnell tornado relief from May 27 to 30 during their 11th-Annual Baseball/Softball/Tee Ball Opening Day at the HRC office.
