SALINA - The Hays High softball team lost a pair of one-run games to Olathe East to open their season Saturday. The Indians lost 2-1 and 8-7.
They play their first games at their new field Tuesday when they host Junction City in a doubleheader beginning at 4 o'clock.
Game 1: Olathe East 2, Hays 1
The Hawks scored first when Kate Jacquinot singled home a run with two outs in the third. They added their second run on a one-out single in the fifth.
Hays scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Brynlee Rupp singled with one out then moved to third on a wild pitch. She scored when Avery Raymer reached on an error with two outs.r
Jaylee Summers went the distance but took the loss in the circle, allowing the two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.
Rupp had two of the Indians five hits.
Game 2: Olathe East 8, Hays 7 (8 innings)
The Indians scored three in the third and three in the fifth to build a 6-3 lead but the Hawks rallied with three in the sixth, one in the seventh to tie then took the lead on a fielder's choice in the eighth.
After Olathe East scored a run in the top of the first, Brynlee Rupp tied with an RBI double to center in the third. Jaylee Summers singled to score Rupp then later scored herself on a Lanie Becker single down the right field line.
The Hawks scored runs in the fourth and fifth to tie but Hays answered with three in the bottom of the fifth to take back the lead. Avery Raymer drove in a run with a single down the left field line, Becker drove in a run on a groundout. Kaylee Kollman scored on an error.
Olathe East plated three in the sixth to tie but the Indians grabbed the lead back when Adalie Kippes scored on a Brynlee Rupp ground out.
Game 2: Olathe East 8, Hays 7
Summers (0-2) took the loss for Hays, giving up a run on two hits in one inning of relief. Raymer started in the circle for Hays and surrendered three runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Shae Augustine had three hits, Becker and Rupp each drove in two runs.
