Mattias Marintzer and Zecharia Dickman finished in the top 15 of the Norton Regional on Saturday to punch their ticket to the 2A State Cross County race.

Marintzer crossed the line in 18:27.78 for a 12th place finish. Dickman was just .19 seconds behind in 13th.

The 2A state race is held in Wamego on November 2nd.

Hays High senior Taevian Maupin was the Indians lone qualifier for the 5A State cross country meet with a 4th place finish at Great Bend on Saturday.

The race will be held in Lawrence at Rim Rock Farm on November 2nd. The Indians competed there earlier in the season.

Fort Hays State Football will play its final home game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. as the Tigers take on Missouri Southern. It's Senior Day as 23 student-athletes on the football team will be recognized 30 minutes before the game. It is also the Hall of Fame Game this year as the newest members of the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame will be honored at halftime.

The Tigers are coming off a tough one-point loss to a Top-10 ranked Pittsburg State team last week in Pittsburg. The Tigers never trailed in the game until the final minute when the Gorillas scored a touchdown to go ahead by one. It was the first game this year in which FHSU scored less than 20 points, falling 18-17.The Tigers are seeking their first unbeaten season at home since 2018 when they finished 6-0 at Lewis Field Stadium. The Tigers are 5-0 at home so far this season with a pair of wins over AFCA Top 25 ranked teams.

Fort Hays State has won nine of the last 10 meetings with Missouri Southern and now holds a 19-14-1 advantage in the all-time series. A 25-24 win by the Lions in Hays in 2022 stopped an eight-game win streak by the Tigers. FHSU has averaged 39.0 points per game in its last 10 contests against Missouri Southern.

Missouri Southern is coming off a 42-21 loss at Washburn. The Lions have lost their last three games after claiming a 27-20 win at Northeastern State back on September 28. The Lions are allowing an average of 40.5 points per game this season. Five opponents this year have scored at least 40 against the Lions. Even though the Lions are 1-7 overall, two of their losses were one-score games.

Fort Hays State won last year's meeting with Missouri Southern by a score of 35-22 in Joplin. The Lions were within six points of the Tigers early in the fourth quarter, but sealed the win on a touchdown with 3:39 remaining in the game.

The Tigers own an 11-4 advantage in the series history between the teams in MIAA play. That includes a 5-3 mark in Hays and 6-1 mark in Joplin. FHSU won the last six games contested between the schools in Joplin.

Fort Hays State owns the third-best redzone defense in NCAA Division II, allowing opponents to score only 55 percent of the time. The Tigers rank fourth nationally in fumbles recovered with eight this year.

Shane Watts&nbsp;leads the Tigers in rushing with 677 yards. His 11 total touchdowns for the season (9 rushing, 2 receiving) puts him second in the MIAA in scoring with 66 points. Jayden Horace&nbsp;leads in receiving with 39 catches for 490 yards and five touchdowns. He now has 2,337 receiving yards in his career with 24 touchdowns, which includes two years at Allen University and two at Fort Hays State.

Defensively, Makel Williams continues to lead the Tiger and the MIAA in tackles with 70. He has reached double figures in tackles in four games this season. Myles Menges&nbsp;leads the Tigers and is tied for the MIAA lead in sacks with 5.0. FHSU has the third-best scoring defense in the MIAA, allowing just 18.8 points per game.

Fort Hays State has 23 players being recognized for Senior Day. The group includes Carson Arndt, Diego Barroso, Garrett Bishop, Sam Brandt, Ty Cooper, Jack Dawson, Sloan Hayden, Logan Heigele, Jayden Horace, Parker Janky, Myles Menges, Trevion Mitcherll, Mason Perez, Dawson Reynolds, Kobe Rome, Demetri Scott, Hunter Trail, Shane Watts, Ryley Wheat, Benyon Williams, Makel Williams and Kamren&nbsp; Xaysongkham.

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs could not overcome
three second-half turnovers as they dropped their district finale Friday in Plainville
24-14.

The Plainville Cardinals took possession of the ball on the
first drive. After driving inside Monarchs territory, Carson Liles intercepted Plainville
Cardinals quarterback Joey Dintino at the TMP 23-yard line. This was the first
of three interceptions for the Monarchs' defense in the game.

The Monarchs' offense also struggled in the first half. They
turned the ball over on downs twice and punted in the first three possessions
of the game.

Plainville got on the scoreboard first, scoring on a 21-yard
Dintino pass for a 7-0 lead with just over four and a half minutes in the first
quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, TMP sophomore Carson Pinkney
suffered a leg injury and was taken to the hospital. That resulted in a lengthy
delay, and the Monarchs were forced to punt it right back in Plainville. 

On that possession, TMP’s Adler Brown recorded his second
career interception on the next Plainville drive and returned it to the
Plainville 15-yard line.

TMP capitalized on the turnover, scoring on a four-yard touchdown
pass to Grant Nehls, and the two-point conversion to Isaac Purinton gave TMP the
8-7 lead with 16 seconds to play.

The Monarchs had the lead at halftime, but on the first play
of the second half, Liles fumbled the ball on an option play. Plainville recovered
it and returned it 30 yards for the score, making it 14-8 Plainville.

The Monarchs lost a second fumble, and Liles threw an interception
in the second half.

TMP got back on the board early in the first quarter, taking
advantage of a short field&nbsp;with a 45-yard drive that was capped off on a
two-yard Adler Brown run. The missed extra point made it 14-14.

Plainville scored the next 10 unanswered points and held off
a late Monarch drive for a 24-14 victory.

Plainville secured the district title and a first-round home
game next week with the win. Smith Center finished second, TMP third and Oakley
fourth in 1A-district 8.

TMP quarterback Carson Liles finished 16-of-31 for 231 yards
with a touchdown and an interception. 

Both Jacob Seib and Isaac Purinton finished with six
receptions for TMP. Grant Nehls had a game-high 98 yards receiving. 

TMP will be on the road next Friday night for a first-round
playoff matchup. The playoff seedings will be released this weekend.

🏈 Mistakes cost Monarchs in loss at Plainville.

HAYS - Hays High honored their seniors Friday night during the final home game of the regular season. The Indians hosted the Liberal Redskins to finish out Western Athletic Conference play.

Each team scored a touchdown in the first half but were unable to get the point after. Carter Graham found Johnny Cano in the back of the end zone for a five yard score with :58 seconds left in the first quarter. Cano made a 38 yard reception earlier in the drive as he toe-tapped prior to going out of bounds.&nbsp;

Hays was unable to get the kick away on the extra point try and a pass on the scramble play floated out of the back of the end zone.

Liberal got their score on one play. Freshmen quarterback Tevin Cotter went over the top of the Hays defense to James Fieser for 74 yards with 1:39 left before halftime. Kamani Jones blocked the extra point to keep the game tied at six.

Liberal grabbed an eight point lead on a 90 yard pass when Cotter connected with Fieser for a second time. The two point conversion put the Redskins up 14-6.&nbsp;

Hays strung together 10 plays on their next drive that marched 62 yards for a touchdown. Graham found Holden Lind in the back left corner of the end zone on a 12 yard pass. Carson Moore knocked through the extra point to cut the lead down to 14-13 with 3:00 left in the third quarter.

The Indians took the lead back in the fourth quarter. Graham and Cano connected for a second time. This time on a double-move 29 yard score. The two point conversion failed leaving Hays with a 19-14 advantage with 6:40 left in the game.

Liberal turned the ball over on downs giving Hays a chance to end the contest on their own terms. The Redskins though jarred the ball free on a third down passing attempt and then returned it for a touchdown. Liberal's two point conversion was no good leaving the score at 20-19.

Hays had two more chances with the ball but turned it over on downs on the first attempt and then had the game come to a close on their last effort.

Carter Graham threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns. Johnny Cano caught 13 passes for 167 yards and two scores. Liberal's Tevin Cotter threw for 219 yards. James Fieser caught three passes for 181 yards and touchdowns.

Hays had 359 yards. Liberal compiled 269 yards. 164 of their yards came on their two offensive touchdowns.

Hays falls to 4-4 on the season and finishes conference play at 2-2. Liberal also goes 2-2 in the WAC and improves to 6-2 overall.

Hays will be on the road in week nine at an opponent to be determined at the time of this article.

KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team gave 6th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney all it could handle Friday evening (Oct. 25) on the road, taking the Lopers to four sets before falling 26-28, 26-24, 22-25, 17-25. 

The Tigers (10-9, 2-8) held leads in each of the first three sets, but the league-leading Lopers (22-1, 9-1) managed to defend their home floor and secure the win.

The Tigers dominated out of the gate, scoring nine in a row to take a commanding 9-1 lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/claire-olson/7947">Claire Olson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/ashlyn-reeves/7949">Ashlyn Reeves</a>&nbsp;each had two kills and a block during the run, helping FHSU take complete control and silence the UNK crowd. The Lopers closed within five, 12-7, before a 5-1 Tiger run put FHSU up nine, 17-8.

The Tigers maintained their advantage, later leading 21-12 before the home team came roaring back. UNK scored six in a row to pull within three, 21-18, before Reeves broke up the streak with a kill. FHSU scored again on a Loper error, putting the Tigers within two of taking the set, 23-18. UNK scored the next four to pull within one before a service error gave the Tigers the first set point opportunity. The Lopers then scored three in a row to pull in front for the first time since it was 1-0, 25-24. FHSU fought off a pair of Loper set points before the home team ultimately took the set 28-26.

The Lopers used the momentum to build a five-point lead early in the second set. Trailing 16-11, Fort Hays State scored five in a row to level the score at 16. Olson opened the run with a kill before Reeves and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/caiya-stucky/7954">Caiya Stucky</a>&nbsp;followed with kills. FHSU then tied the score on back-to-back blocks, one from Reeves and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/grace-schmedding/8180">Grace Schmedding</a>&nbsp;and one from Reeves and Stucky.

The teams traded points for the next dozen rallies before FHSU finally broke through and took the lead at 23-22. The Lopers punched right back, however, taking the next two points to reach set point. An attack error kept the Tigers alive before Stucky and Reeves teamed up for another block to give FHSU a chance at set point. Another Loper error sealed the deal in the second, giving FHSU a 26-24 win.

The black and gold led by as many as three midway through the third set, 13-10, after the Tigers rattled off four consecutive points. Olson began the run with a kill before Stucky and Reeves got together for two more rejections. FHSU led as late as 14-13 before the Lopers scored three in a row to take the lead for good. The home team reached set point at 24-20 before the Tigers dropped in a pair of kills to extend the set two more points. UNK finally finished things off with a kill, taking the set 25-22.

The Lopers never trailed in the fourth set, using an 11-2 run to turn a slim 8-7 edge into a commanding 19-9 lead. Fort Hays State later trailed by as many as 12, 24-12, before fighting off five match points and pull within 24-17. The rally eventually fell short, with UNK taking the set 25-17 to secure the victory.

The Tigers posted an attack percentage of .160 on the night (56-25-194) while racking up 10 total blocks. Olson led the team with 14 kills, doing so on 33 attempts with just one error for a swing rate of .394. Schmedding and Rains each tallied 11 kills, with Reeves adding 10 kills and seven blocks (one solo). Stucky racked up 40 assists, six digs, five blocks and four kills.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/kirsten-evans/7943">Kirsten Evans</a>&nbsp;led the team with 26 digs while adding six assists.

HAYS, Kan. – A dominant second-half performance led Fort Hays State to a 4-0 victory over Harding on Thursday. The win lifted the Tigers to 8-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in GAC play, while Harding dropped to 1-10-3 on the season and 1-7 in conference competition.

Both teams remained in a defensive stalemate throughout the first half. Fort Hays State controlled possession, outshooting Harding 9-0, but could not find the back of the net.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/collin-hershberger/7929">Collin Hershberger</a>&nbsp;came close to breaking the tie with a powerful strike to the right corner, only for Harding goalkeeper Inigo Chavarria to make a diving save. Chavarria tallied five saves by halftime to keep the match scoreless.

The Tigers came out strong in the second half, capitalizing on their offensive opportunities.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/jeremiah-johnson/8553">Jeremiah Johnson</a>&nbsp;opened the scoring after weaving through defenders from midfield and slotting the ball past the keeper. Moments later,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/bryce-dickerson/8344">Bryce Dickerson</a>&nbsp;connected with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/fabian-gylden-svensson/8349">Fabian Gylden Svensson</a>&nbsp;in the box, who set up&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/bastian-carlman/8343">Bastian Carlman</a>&nbsp;for a clean finish to double the lead.

Fort Hays continued to press, forcing a penalty in the box that Felix Tellex Ramirez converted with precision, making it 3-0. The scoring was capped off by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/oliver-wright/8369">Oliver Wright</a>, who followed up his own shot with a rebound finish, completing the four-goal burst in the second half. The Tiger defense remained impenetrable, holding Harding to just four shots throughout the match, while maintaining offensive control. Fort Hays State outshot Harding 23-4, completing the season series sweep and improving to 16-2 all-time against the Bisons.

Tellex Ramirez led the Tigers with four shots, including three on target.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/elias-ovelar-semeniuk/7935">Elias Ovelar Semeniuk</a>&nbsp;and Carlman added three shots apiece. (AP) — The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are acquiring three-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans, replenishing a position group that has been ravaged by injuries, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams have not announced the trade.

The Chiefs are sending a conditional fifth-round pick to the Titans, according to NFL Network, while Tennessee is taking on some of Hopkins' salary. That was an important point for the Chiefs, who have very little salary cap space.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid declined to acknowledge the trade before practice Wednesday, saying only that general manager Brett Veach was “dealing with all of that.” When pressed about the trade, Reid said with a slight smile: “I know nothing.”

The Chiefs lost wide receiver Marquise Brown, one of their top free-agent signings,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-marquise-brown-injury-c52e732bf13f6a25528baaf5cb64f453">to shoulder surgery</a>&nbsp;prior to the start of the season. Hopkins is the third high-profile wide receiver to be traded in just over a week.

Hours later,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cooper-bills-browns-trade-2bb41cb98a5a7bbdb9a72604bb8b17d8">the Bills acquired Amari Cooper</a>&nbsp;and a sixth-round pick next year from the Browns for a third-round pick along with a seventh-rounder in 2026.

The 32-year-old Hopkins only had 15 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown in his second season in Tennessee. But Hopkins is a proven star — 943 catches for 12,528 yards and 79 TDs over a career spent mostly in Arizona and Houston — and has a versatile skill set that should fit well into Reid's complex offensive system.

Hopkins is also on an expiring contract, which means the cash-strapped Chiefs will not assume any salary beyond this season. That was crucial to any trade they made given the number of pending free agents they have on the roster.

“I think the biggest thing is just getting with the coaches. The coaches do a great job of getting guys up to speed, and you’ve seen that already this year,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Wednesday. “I just try to be on the same page as the guys that are in there.”

This is the third straight season that the Chiefs have traded for wide receiver help. They acquired Kadarius Toney from the Giants two years ago, though he was cut before this season, and Mecole Hardman from the Jets last season.

The Chiefs will try to present Hopkins with enough of the playbook that he can help out as soon as Sunday against the Raiders in Las Vegas. But it could take several weeks before he is familiar enough with it to make a genuine impact.

That's not a problem for the Chiefs, though. The only unbeaten team left in the NFL at 6-0, they are eying a much bigger prize: Mahomes and Co. are trying to win an unprecedented third straight Lombardi Trophy come February.

The Chiefs won their second straight Super Bowl by beating the 49ers last February, despite a wide receiver corps that was among the NFL's worst. And while Chiefs general manager Brett Veach tried to solve the problem by signing Brown and drafting Xavier Worthy in the first round, their injury situation this season had left them in a familiar predicament.

The Chiefs still have productive tight ends Travis Kelce and Noah Gray, but they were preparing to play this week with Worthy alongside Hardman, journeyman Justin Watson and disappointing former second round pick Skyy Moore.

Hopkins provides a massive upgrade to that group for a team that has championship expectations.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-fernando-valenzuela-jersey-retired-f553e3f694878731b9748532ee47a9f7">Fernando Valenzuela</a>, the Mexican-born phenom for the Los Angeles Dodgers who inspired “Fernandomania” while winning the NL Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year in 1981, has died. He was 63.

The team said he died Tuesday night at a Los Angeles hospital, but did not provide the cause or other details.

His death comes as the Dodgers prepare to open the World Series on Friday night at home against the New York Yankees. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Valenzuela would be honored during the series at Dodger Stadium.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-fernando-valenzuela-e9972a2c3394ad1e6fff2c9b6c5bfc5e">Valenzuela had left</a>&nbsp;his color commentator job on the Dodgers’ Spanish-language television broadcast in September without explanation. He was reported to have been hospitalized earlier this month. His job kept him as a regular at Dodger Stadium, where he held court in the press box dining room before games and remained popular with fans who sought him out for photos and autographs.

“God bless Fernando Valenzuela!” actor and Dodgers fan&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/officialDannyT">Danny Trejo</a>&nbsp;posted on X.

Valenzuela was one of the most dominant players of his era and a wildly popular figure in the 1980s, although he was never elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. However, he is part of Cooperstown, which features several artifacts including a signed ball from his no-hitter in 1990.

“He is one of the most influential Dodgers ever and belongs on the Mount Rushmore of franchise heroes," Stan Kasten, team president and CEO, said in a statement. “He galvanized the fan base with the Fernandomania season of 1981 and has remained close to our hearts ever since, not only as a player but also as a broadcaster. He has left us all too soon.”

Valenzuela's rise from humble beginnings as the youngest of 12 children in Mexico and his feats on the mound made him hugely popular and influential in Los Angeles’ Latino community while helping attract new fans to Major League Baseball. Their fondness for him continued for years after his retirement.

“63 is way too young.... A piece of my childhood is gone,” actor and “Access Hollywood” co-host&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/mariolopezviva/status/1848939573277335998">Mario Lopez posted</a>&nbsp;on X. “Growing up as a Mexican kid one of the main reasons I'm a Dodgers fan is because of Fernando. ... Not only a great player, but a great man to the community. What a legend.”

Eva Torres, originally from Mexico City, drove from Anaheim to look at murals of Valenzuela on Sunset Boulevard near Dodgers Stadium.

“I wasn’t a fan of baseball but I am a fan of his," she said. "He’s like me, an immigrant that came here to do great things.”

In 1981, Valenzuela became the Dodgers’ opening day starter as a rookie after Jerry Reuss was injured 24 hours before his scheduled start. He shut out the Houston Astros 2-0 and began the season 8-0 with five shutouts and an ERA of 0.50. He became the first player to win a Cy Young and Rookie of the Year in the same season.

His performances created the delirium known as “Fernandomania” among Dodgers fans. The ABBA hit “Fernando” would play as he warmed up on the mound.

“Fernando Valenzuela was a true icon of the Dodgers and the game,”&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/RepJimmyGomez/status/1848941109768045008">Rep. Jimmy Gomez</a>, D-Calif., posted on X. “His legacy and connection with the Latino community in LA is one of the reasons I fell in love with the Dodgers.”

Valenzuela was 13-7 and had a 2.48 ERA in his first season, which was shortened by a players’ strike.

He was an All-Star selection every year from 1981-86, when he recorded 97 victories, 84 complete games, 1,258 strikeouts and a 2.97 ERA. He was 5-1 with a 2.00 ERA in eight postseason starts. He earned two Silver Slugger Awards and a Gold Glove.

Valenzuela’s no-hitter on June 29, 1990, a 6-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium, was an emotional career highlight. He struck out seven and walked three.

“If you have a sombrero, throw it to the sky!”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efFHcfIuCEs">Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully</a>&nbsp;exclaimed in his game call.

Nicknamed “El Toro” by the fans, Valenzuela had an unorthodox and memorable pitching motion that included looking skyward at the apex of each windup. His repertoire included a screwball — making him one of the few pitchers of his era who threw that pitch regularly. It was taught to him by teammate Bobby Castillo after the Dodgers felt Valenzuela, who wasn’t known as a hard thrower, needed another pitch.

Early in his Dodgers career, Valenzuela spoke little English and had trouble communicating with his catchers. Rookie Mike Scioscia learned Spanish and became Valenzuela’s personal catcher before becoming the team’s full-time catcher.

Valenzuela was a better-than-average hitter, with 10 career home runs.

Eventually, his pitching was compromised by nagging shoulder problems that kept him out of the 1988 postseason, when the Dodgers won the World Series.

The team released Valenzuela just before the 1991 season. He also pitched for the former California Angels, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals.

He retired in 1997, going 173-153 with a 3.54 ERA in 17 seasons, the all-time major league leader in wins and strikeouts (2,074) by a Mexican-born player. In 11 seasons with the Dodgers, he was 141-116 with a 3.31 ERA.

Valenzuela’s rise from his tiny hometown of Etchohuaquila in the Mexican state of Sonora to stardom in the U.S. was improbable. He was the youngest child in a large family who tagged along when his older brothers played baseball.

He signed his first pro contract at age 16, and soon began overpowering older players in the Mexican Central League.

In 1978, legendary Dodgers scout Mike Brito was in Mexico to watch a shortstop when Valenzuela entered the game as a reliever. He immediately commanded Brito’s attention and at age 18, Valenzuela signed with the Dodgers in 1979. He was sent to the California League that same year.

In 1980, Valenzuela was called up to the Dodgers in September and soon made his big league debut as a reliever.

He remains the only pitcher in MLB history to win the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season. The left-hander was the National League’s starting pitcher in the All-Star Game in 1981, the same year the Dodgers won the World Series.

During his career, he made the cover of Sports Illustrated and visited the White House.

In 2003, Valenzuela returned to the Dodgers as the Spanish-language radio color commentator for NL games. Twelve years later, he switched to the color commentator job on the team’s Spanish-language TV feed.

“He consistently supported the growth of the game through the World Baseball Classic and at MLB events across his home country,” Manfred said in a statement. “As a member of the Dodger broadcasting team for more than 20 years, Fernando helped to reach a new generation of fans and cultivate their love of the game. Fernando will always remain a beloved figure in Dodger history and a special source of pride for the millions of Latino fans he inspired.”

He was inducted into the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. Five years later, the Mexican League retired Valenzuela’s No. 34 jersey. The Dodgers followed in 2023 after keeping his number out of circulation since he last pitched for the team in 1991. The Dodgers named Valenzuela as part of the “Legends of Dodger Baseball” in 2019 and inducted him into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2023.

Valenzuela served on the coaching staff for Mexico during the World Baseball Classic in 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2017. He was a part-owner of the Mexican League team Tigres de Quintana Roo, with son Fernando Jr. serving as team president and son Ricky serving as general manager. Fernando Jr. played in the San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox organizations as a first baseman.

In addition to his sons, he is survived by his wife, Linda, who was a schoolteacher from Mexico whom he married in 1981, and daughters Linda and Maria as well as seven grandchildren.

then darkness, the girls’ 5A State Golf Tournament was finished up Tuesday at
the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Hays
High’s Jaycee Oakley earned All-State honors with a ninth-place finish. Oakley
had her first round suspended due to darkness on Monday. She completed it
Tuesday morning and shot a 7-over par 77 to advance to the second round where
she fired an 82 for a 19-over par 159 total.

Mt. Carmel’s Ximena Sarinana won the individual title with a 2-over par 142.
Andover’s Regan Dusenbery finished second with a 144 and Newton’s Naomi Koontz placed
third with a 148.
