KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Left-hander Danny Duffy will start for the Kansas City Royals when they open the season in Cleveland next week.

Duffy, 31, will make his third start on Opening Day, although this one is far different than the others because of the coronavirus pandemic. The game July 24 will begin a season shortened to 60 games that will last through August and September.

Right-hander Brad Keller, who started on Opening Day last season, is sidelined after testing positive for the coronavirus. He is one of four players expected to make the Royals' initial 30-man roster who are awaiting two negative tests in a 24-hour span to return to the club. The others are first baseman Ryan O'Hearn and catchers Salvador Perez and Cam Gallagher.

Duffy went 7-6 with a 4.34 ERA in 23 starts last season.

Charlotte, NC – Following the recommendations from the NJCAA Presidential Advisory Council and the NJCAA Board of Regents, the NJCAA has announced its adjusted plan of action for the upcoming 2020-21 academic year. Following the Board of Regents' vote on Monday, a majority of competition will be moved to the spring semester.

The most recent plan of action shifts all close-contact fall sports to the spring semester. These sports include football, men's and women's soccer, and court volleyball. The NJCAA cross country championships for all three divisions and half marathon championships will remain as their originally scheduled dates in the fall as well as Division III women's tennis.

All winter sports competition will begin in January with a majority of championship seasons moved from March to April. These sports include men's and women's basketball, wrestling, and swimming and diving. Men's and women's bowling and men's and women's indoor track and field will be held at the beginning of March.

Spring sports competition remains intact with minor adjustments to dates. These sports include baseball, softball, beach volleyball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, track and field, and men's and women's tennis.

Along with the adjustments to competition season and championship dates, the NJCAA has provided information as it relates to scrimmage and practice dates and allowances in the fall.

Championship dates are subject to change based on championship facility availability.

NJCAA votes to move football and other sports to the spring

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State Athletics has confirmed that only two total student-athletes are currently being isolated for active COVID-19 as of Monday afternoon.

Since the department began testing last month, a total of 29 student-athletes had tested positive for COVID-19 following PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing of 190 student-athletes.

The football program began today its summer access program, which includes eight hours of weight training, conditioning and film review per week, while the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer and volleyball continue voluntary workouts.

Kansas State athletics provides COVID-19 update

The Big 12 Conference will commemorate its 25th anniversary during the 2020-21 athletic year by recognizing the memorable student-athletes, coaches and teams since inception. Highlights include national championships, award winners, academic honors, hall of famers and unforgettable performances.

A social media campaign featuring these accomplishments will launch on July 20 across the Conference’s social media platforms to coincide with the start of Big 12 Virtual Football Media Days presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors. The campaign will continue through June 15, 2021. As part of the 25th anniversary recognition, each institution created commemorative videos with versions for football, men's basketball, women's basketball and Olympic sports. The videos will be featured on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ throughout the season. Additionally, a commemorative logo was created for use during the anniversary year.

“While our nation is certainly in the midst of trying times, we still want to acknowledge this significant Conference milestone,” said Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “There have been many iconic individuals, teams and moments that have shaped our 25-year history and we look forward to reminiscing throughout the upcoming year.”

The Big 12 Conference was founded on February 25, 1994, and began official competition with the 1996-97 academic year. The original structure consisted of 12 universities with eight of those as current members in Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. On July 2, 2012, the Big 12 welcomed TCU and West Virginia for its current 10-institution membership.

In its short history, the Big 12 has been at the forefront in college athletics reform, specifically with student-athlete welfare. Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. With their opponent unable to make the trip to Hays, the Larks' scheduled home games with the NoCo Roughnecks on Tuesday and Wednesday have been canceled.

Larks six-game win streak snapped

HAYS – Cam Pehrson and Matt Cavanagh both had three hits
while four pitchers held Boulder in check in the Hays Larks 4-1 win over the Collegians
Friday night at Larks Park. Hays (11-4, 11-4 RMBL) has now won a season-best
five straight games while Boulder (14-14, 12-13 RMBL) drops their ninth straight.

Starter Rustin Hays (1-0) pitched the first six innings and allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks to pick up the win. Trey Riggs, Zach Firmature and Trevor Munsch all followed with one shutout inning of relief. Riggs struck out three and Munsch picked up his first save of the season.

The Larks grabbed the early on a first inning sacrifice fly
from Wyatt Divis which scored Leo Jiminian. After the Colleigans tied it with a
run in the top of the third, Divis gave the Larks the lead for good with a line
drive to right which scored Jiminian to put Hays up 2-1.

line drive home to left. The Coshise (Texas) College product has now hit four

A leadoff error opened the door for the Larks (10-4) who stung together four straight hits with two outs in the eighth.

Grant Lung's towering three-run homer to right tied the game, then after a Wyatt Divis double, Corbin Truslow singled to center to drive in the go-ahead run.

Closer Jacob Ensz made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Back-to-back walks put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Following a sacrifice bunt and strikeout and intentional walk which loaded the bases, Ensz struck out Cade Nelson to end the game.

Brady Rose pitched three innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and picked up the win.

Lung home run helps Larks to fourth straight win

HOISINGTON - The TMP-Marian Monarchs 18U baseball team had a couple of
good games Thursday night in Hoisington. They took advantage of a key error and scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and won the opener 3-0.

Mark Rack went the distance on the mound allowing five hits with four
strikeouts and four walks.

Hoisington scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and won the second game 3-2. 

After both teams scored a run in the first, the game remain tied until the seventh when TMP took a 2-1 lead on Rack's two out single.

Hoisington took advantage of a couple of errors in the bottom of the inning and scored their two runs with two outs including a steal at home for the game winner.

Mason
Robbins went the distance but suffered the loss. He allowed one unearned run on six hits with eight
strikeouts and one walk.

The Monarchs (14-9) have played four times this summer and three of the games have been decided by one run.

Opening Day is scheduled for Thursday, April 1 at Kauffman Stadium vs. the Texas Rangers, to mark the fifth time in seven years that the Royals will open the season at home. It’ll be the first time the Royals will play the Rangers on Opening Day, and the first time they will open with a non-divisional opponent since starting the 2016 season vs. the New York Mets.

Kansas City will continue its I-70 series vs. St. Louis with three games at Busch Stadium from Aug. 6-8 and three games at Kauffman Stadium from Aug. 13-15. The remaining 14 Interleague games will be played over six series, including three at home and three on the road against the National League Central. This will mark the second consecutive season in which the Royals will face all five National League Central opponents.

Kansas City will host Interleague matchups in 2021 vs. Milwaukee (May 18-19), Pittsburgh (May 31-June 1) and Cincinnati (July 5-7). The road Interleague schedule will take the Royals to Pittsburgh (April 27-28), Milwaukee (July 20-21) and Chicago (Aug. 20-22). This will be the Royals’ first trip to PNC Park in Pittsburgh since 2018, and will mark the second straight season in which they will travel to Milwaukee’s Miller Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field.&nbsp;

Kansas City’s holiday schedule will see the Royals host Texas on Easter Sunday (April 4), the Chicago White Sox on Mother’s Day (May 9), Pittsburgh on Memorial Day (May 31), Boston on Father’s Day (June 20) and Minnesota on Independence Day (July 4). The Royals will travel to Baltimore on Labor Day (Sept. 6).

The All-Star break will run from July 12-15 and will include the 91st Major League Baseball All-Star Game to be played on Tuesday, July 13 at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves.

Kansas City will host 81 games at Kauffman Stadium, including 13 in April, 13 in May, 11 in June, 16 in July, 11 in August, 14 in September and three in October.

The Royals will host two 10-game homestands, from April 12-21 vs. Los Angeles, Toronto and Tampa Bay; and from Aug. 9-19 vs. New York, St. Louis and Houston. struck out three and walked one. Wyatt Divis pitched four scoreless innings of
relief and gets the save. Divis allowed two hits while striking out three with

The Larks (9-4)

deficit. They opened the fifth with four straight singles, the last by Grant Lung which drove in two runs to give the Larks the lead for good.

In anticipation of the National Football League's guidelines being issued to clubs regarding stadium configuration changes and reduced capacity due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Chiefs have announced a plan that offers the most flexibility and benefits for Season Ticket Members for what will be an unprecedented NFL season in 2020.

Because the club cannot fairly re-seat the entire season ticket base across a limited number of seats, all Season Ticket Members will automatically have their 2020 payment credited for the 2021 season without any action on their part. Keeping their payment as a credit towards 2021 includes the following benefits:

Season Ticket Members who wish to receive a full refund vs. a 2021 credit can choose to do so by contacting their ticket representative over the phone or via email. While those who opt to receive a refund won't be eligible for the above benefits in 2020, they will still be issued a 2021 renewal for their same season ticket location(s) and will maintain their tenure.

"People around the country and around the world are getting accustomed to a constantly changing environment and the same goes for all of us in Chiefs Kingdom," Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. "While our goal all offseason was to have a full stadium as we begin our Super Bowl title defense, it is out of consideration of the health and safety of our fans, employees, coaches and players that we move forward with a reduced-capacity plan that adheres to local guidelines and expert recommendations. As we looked at ways to navigate this unusual season, our first priority was to offer a fair and flexible plan for our loyal and valued Season Ticket Members, and we believe we accomplished that. While it will be a different experience for everyone, we are looking forward to welcoming fans to Arrowhead this fall."

Due to the inability to accommodate all Season Ticket Members, there is no way to account for purchasers who have already secured single-game tickets. All single-game tickets purchased through the primary market will be issued an automatic refund to the method of payment. For any tickets purchased through a resale marketplace, ticket purchasers will need to visit the marketplace used to review their options. Single-game parking passes that have already been purchased through the team will automatically be refunded to the method of payment as well.

The club will announce and conduct a reduced-capacity single-game on-sale once the final number of available seats is determined based on the guidance of the NFL, as well as local government officials and public health experts. Season Ticket Members who retain their 2020 funds as a credit for 2021 will be given first access to purchase single-game tickets in a priority order, based on their tenure. This Season Ticket Member process will take place through password-protected online accounts. Any remaining single-game tickets will be offered to the public following the Season Ticket Member presale.

When reduced capacity single-game tickets go on sale to Season Ticket Members and the public, it is likely that the club will only sell tickets for the preseason and the first few games of the regular season. Chiefs announce season ticket member plan for 2020 season

pitcher Brad Keller and first baseman Ryan O’Hearn have each tested 
positive for COVID-19.&nbsp; Both players have released a statement after 
giving the club permission to announce that positive test.

Keller,
 24 (he turns 25 on July 27), is in his third season with Kansas City 
after joining the organization as a Rule 5 selection in December, 2017.

“Of
 course I was devastated when I heard the news from Nick Kenney (Head 
Athletic Trainer) that I had two positive tests,” Keller said. “I was 
sent home yesterday and was hoping the first test was a false positive, 
but I got the word today that the second test also came back positive 
and I have to go into isolation. I am experiencing minor symptoms that 
remind me more of an allergy attack. Other than that I feel great and 
have no other symptoms, including no cough or fever. I’m going to follow
 the directions from our training staff and hope to be back working out 
with the club as soon as possible. I would encourage everyone to stay 
safe.”

O’Hearn, 26 (he turns 27 on July 26), played in 105 games 
for the Royals last year, his second stint with the big league club, 
hitting 14 home runs.

“Obviously I was shocked when I got the news
 that my test was positive,” said O’Hearn. “I am asymptomatic and feel 
fine physically. It’s been a really tough summer waiting for the season 
to start and to have a setback like this, albeit hopefully a brief one, 
just makes me that much hungrier. Though I have to be in quarantine, I 
plan to continue working out as much as possible and taking direction 
from our medical team until the time comes that I’m cleared to rejoin my
 teammates. If this could happen to me, it could happen to anyone, so it
 really is important for everybody to pay attention to their 
surroundings and don’t assume that you’re not vulnerable, because 
everyone is.”

Royals report Keller, O'Hearn test positive for COVID-19

The Kansas City Chiefs made sure they’ll have Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes around as long as possible. Mahomes agreed to a 10-year extension worth $503 million, according to his agency, Steinberg Sports. 

The deal is worth $477 million in guarantee mechanisms and includes a no-trade clause and opt-out clauses if guarantee mechanisms aren’t met. 

It’s the richest contract in professional sports history, surpassing Mike Trout’s $426.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels.

After advancing to the title game but not bringing home the title in their first two
tournaments this summer, the third time was a
charm for the Hays Senior Eagles as they rallied for a 9-7 win over the Liberal
Rattlers to win their third-straight Wild Fest Tournament Sunday at Larks Park.

The Eagles had their title game against Buhler rained out at
the Bob Hooper Tournament three weeks ago then lost to Millard North in the
finals of the Kansas Grand Slam in Salina last Sunday — and things didn't look very promising against the Rattlers.

The Eagles
(17-2) trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the fifth
inning but rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie then scored three
more runs in the sixth to take the lead. 

Liberal tallied a run on a two-out single in the seventh but
Javier Bojorquez was thrown out at second by left fielder Dalton Dale trying to stretch the single into a
double to end the game.

After starter Carson Jacobs gave up six runs on three hits
over 4 1/3 innings, fellow TMP-Marian teammate Brady Kruetzer came in relief to
shut the door on the Rattlers. Kreutzer gave up one run on one hit over the
final 2 1/3 innings for the win. He also has three of the Eagles six hits and
scored two runs.

Dale had two hits and drove in two runs. 

After two scoreless innings to start the game, Liberal took
the lead with two runs in the third. 

The Eagles closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning
on a Colby Dreiling sacrifice fly, which scored Jack Fields.

The Rattlers scored two more runs in the fourth and two in
the fifth for a 6-1 lead.

Liberal starter Garrett Hall held Hays in check until the
bottom of the fifth when Fields started the comeback with a leadoff walk. Kreutzer followed with a single then Colby Dreiling walked to load the bases. Brock
Lummus followed with a walk to score the first run. A single from Carson Jacobs
scored two runs to cut the gap to 6-4. Remington Cox was hit by a pitch to load
the bases for a second time in the inning then with two outs Dale
singled to left to drive in two more runs and tie the game 6-6.

The Eagles grabbed the lead for good an inning later.
Garrett Wellbrock battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a lead-off walk to
open the frame. A sac bunt from Fields advanced Wellbrock to second. Kreutzer singled and Dreiling walked to load the bases. Wellbrock then scored
the go-ahead run on a passed ball. Lummus pushed the lead to 8-6 with a sacrifice
fly to deep right field. Dreiling later scored on a passed ball to give Hays a
9-6 lead.

Senior Eagles rally to win third-straight WWF Tournament

LASALLE CO. – The Hays Larks collected 19 hits and scored 12
runs in the ninth inning alone Sunday as they downed the Boulder Collegians
20-0 for their second straight win. 

The Larks took an early 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI double by
Corbin Truslow in the top of the first inning.

Hays added three more in the third inning as Wyatt Divis
scored on a wild pitch and Cameron Peherson hit a two-run homerun giving Hays a
4-0 lead. 

In the fifth inning Sean Cooper drove in a pair of runs to
put Hays up 6-0 and they added two more with two-run triple by Dylan Dreiling
in the sixth inning as Hays built an 8-0 lead. 

In the top of the ninth Hays sent 17 men to the plate as
they scored 12 runs.

Cameron Peherson homered twice and drove in seven runs and
Grant Lung homered and drove in three in the Hays win.

Three pitchers combined for a complete game shutout. Trevor
Munsch worked two scoreless innings of relief and earned the win.

The Larks are 8-4 and will host the Collegians on Wednesday.

Larks rout Boulder for second straight win

HAYS – The Hays Senior Eagles moved to 4-0 and advanced to
Sunday’s championship game of the Wild West Fest Tournament after a 9-0, five
inning run-rule win over Russell Saturday evening at Larks Park. 

Colby Dreiling and Brady Kreutzer combined on the three-hit
shutout. Dreiling made the start and gave up the three hits with two strikeouts
and no walks over three innings and picked up the win. Kreutzer pitched the
final two innings and didn’t allow a hit with one strikeout and one walk.

The Eagles (16-2) scored six runs in the first then added
another the second and two in the third.0

Brock Lummus and Remington Cox both had two hits. Garrett
Wellbrock had a hit and drove in three runs. Lummus and Carson Jacobs both had
two RBIs.

The Senior Eagles will play Liberal for the championship at
3 p.m. Sunday. The Rattlers are 3-1 and defeating Smith Center-2 15-0 and the
Hays Junior Eagles 11-1 Saturday.

The Junior Eagles went 1-1 Saturday, edging Smith Center-2
11-9. They went 1-3 in pool play and face Smith Center-2 in the fifth place
game at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Hays Senior Eagles advance to WWF title game

Jake Wyeth had four hits including a home run and drive in
six runs to lead the Hays Larks to a 15-4 victory over the Colorado Pirates
Saturday, ending their three-game losing streak.

The game was called with two outs in the bottom of the sixth due to rain.

Wyeth grounded into a double play which scored a run in the
first inning. He then singled in the second, homered in the third, singled in
the fifth then singled again in the sixth.

The Larks (7-4) scored six in the second with Grant Lung, Wyatt
Divis, Wyeth and Corbin Truslow all driving in runs. They added three in the
third on a three-run homer from Wyeth to make the score 10-2.

Starter Ryan Ruder gave up four runs on seven hits over five
innings with six strikeouts and no walks and picked up the win.

The Larks had 18 hits in the game. Along with Wyeth’s homer,
Palmer Hutchison and Wyatt Divis both hit doubles.

Hays closes out their Colorado road trip Sunday at the Boulder Collegians.

Wyeth big day helps Larks end three-game skid

HAYS – A blowout, a walk-off win and a one-hitter
highlighted day one of the Wild West Fest Tournament for the Hays Senior Eagles
at Larks Park.

After an 18-0 blowout win over the second of two Smith
Center teams in the field, the Eagles got a walk-off win later in the day
against the other Smith Center team. After the Blue Raiders scored three runs in
the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead, the Eagles took advantage of
two errors and a hit batter to load the bases with two outs. Jack Fields then
singled to center on an 0-2 pitch to drive in Dawson VonFeldt with the tying
run and Dalton Dale with the winning run.

Garrett Wellbrock then pitched a complete game one-hitter in
the Eagles 9-1 win over Liberal in the final game of the night. Wellbrock allowed
one unearned run over six innings while striking out six and walking one in the
game that was called after six innings by run-rule.

Brady Kreutzer, Brock Lummus and Carson Jacobs all had two
hits in the finale with Jacobs driving in three runs and Lummus two.

The Eagles sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 13 runs
in the top of the first inning in their first game of the day against Smith
Center-1. Brock Lummus allowed one hit with eight strikeouts and no walks over
three innings.

The Senior Eagles close out pool play against Russell at 6
p.m. Saturday 

The Junior Eagles suffered a couple of tough losses, losing
6-5 to Russell and 12-11 to Smith Center-1 in extra innings.

Russell rallied to win in their last at-bat then the Blue
Raiders scored six in the bottom of the fifth to force extra innings. After
both teams scored four runs using the international tie-breaker in the first
extra inning, Smith Center tallied the winning run in their second extra inning
at bat.

of the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead over the Colorado Sox Saturday, but the
Sox rallied with a run in the bottom of the fourth then five in the fifth for a
9-7 win.

Dylan Dreiling led the Larks 10-hit attack going 3-for-5
with three RBIs. Wyatt Divis had two hits including a home runs and drove in
three.

Cole Zimmerman allowed five runs on one hit with four walks
and two strikeouts over 2/3 innings of relief and suffered the loss.

Starter Paddy Walsh went four innings and allowed four runs
(three earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

After a 6-1 start, the Larks (6-4) have lost three straight.

The Larks take on the Colorado Pirates Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Larks drop third straight in Colorado

TOPEKA – While questions continue as to what school will
look like in the fall for high school students in Kansas amid the COVID-19
pandemic the state’s activities association is moving forward with plans for
sports this fall.

Earlier this week, a post on social media claimed that the
Kansas State High School Activities was planning to cancel fall sports. The
official KSHSAA Twitter account quickly responded, saying “there is no truth to
this rumor.”

In a Zoom meeting Wednesday with media members from across
the state, KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick pushed back and called the
Tweet “irresponsible.”

Faflick said KSHSAA is currently working on a plan for the fall.

“All of our efforts right now are directed at providing
best guidance for our schools,” Faflick said.

KSHSAA has already provided an update to its member schools
this summer, and Faflick said they plan to release a plan for fall sports
after the state department of education releases its guidelines for return
later this month.

“We think that the plans that we have put in plans are
adaptable and we’re about to exercise the agility necessary to accommodate potential
changes,” Faflick said.

Faflick said they anticipate the Kansas Department of
Education releasing more information on July 17, and KSHSAA will use that
guidance to update and release its plan.

“We know school needs to be in session for us to have an interscholastic
activity program that is education-based,” Faflick said.

He said much of the focus centers around the actual
operations of the different events in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19
and not how the activities and athletics look on the stage, court or field.

Faflick said they have looked into different contingency
plans. Among those would be potentially moving the fall sports to the spring and
spring sports to the fall. But he said “challenges” remain.

He said the issue is that spring activities were already
canceled last year and they worry that a second wave of the coronavirus could
cut the fall season short as well.

“While we’ve looked at that, at this point as of July 1st
of 2020, that does not seem to be a direction we want to go,” Faflick said. 

Faflick added that they believe their plan is flexible
enough to make changes if more restrictions are announced by the state of
Kansas.

“We’ve looked at many models, not just season flipping but
season shifting” Faflick said.

or limiting the number of competitions.“We know it’s a fluid situation, yet we can wait for
guidance to be put out we want to be prepared when that happens,” Faflick said.There have been a few school districts across the state that
have had to alter their summer workout programs due to positive COVID-19 tests
and exposure to the coronavirus and Faflick said that does worry them.“Our challenge is the unknown,” Faflick said. “Not knowing when
we’re going to be able to get back to normal, wherever that new normal is, as
well as the unknown presence of COVID-19.”He said they have already made several recommendations to
member schools. Among those are screening every student and coach before every
activity. They also continue to recommend good personal hygiene practices.The first day of fall practice is scheduled for Aug. 17 and several
schools, including Thomas More Prep-Marian and Victoria are set to start school that day.
Hays schools are scheduled to start Aug. 13 with Ellis schools starting Aug.
20.
