🥎 Indians rally but fall short in extra innings to Panthers

HAYS – The Hays High softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings but give up a run in the top of the eighth and lost 9-8 to Great Bend Thursday afternoon at Glassman Park.

The Indians (5-5, 3-5 WAC) opened the seventh with back-to-back doubles from Lakyn Zimmerman and Morgen Berry. After a Brenna Schwien walk, Sydney Fagan reached on an error scoring Berry. Dezerea Schmidt tripled to right field scoring two to tie the game.

Pamela Bujanda opened the eighth for Great Bend with a single then stole second and scored on Rivas single to center.

The Indians got a single in the bottom of the eighth but could never advance a runner past first base.

Great Bend scored a run in the first, two in the second and one more in the top of the third to grab a 4-0 lead. The Indians answered with two runs with two outs in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch and Schwien single.

The Panthers added three in the sixth on two doubles and a triple to go up 7-2.

Schmidt singled scoring Berry and Schwien in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 7-4.
