A strong first half was undone by a cold shooting second half as the Hays High Indians fall short to Garden City 54-38 on Friday night.&nbsp; Aleyia Ruder scored the Indians first nine points of the night and pushed Hays out to a 9-2 advantage.&nbsp; Tasiah Nunnery scored the next 10 points for Hays taking the lead back from Garden City at 19-18.&nbsp;

The two team swapped the lead during the second quarter with the Buffaloes leading at half time 24-22.&nbsp; The Indians shot nearly fifty percent at half time but could not keep the pace.&nbsp; Garden City did keep their shooting sharp and built up a double digit lead on a 16-5 third quarter.

Hays did have an opening in the fourth quarter but made just three of eleven free throws in the final five minutes and two of ten shots.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nunnery finished the night with 15 points while Ruder added 13.&nbsp; Garden City's Keyhanna Turner scored a career high 21 while freshman Amaya Gallegos scored 13.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays falls to 5-13 on the year and 1-6 in the Western Athletic Conference.&nbsp; Garden City moves to 10-9 and 4-3.

Jason Krannawitter had a birthday he will not soon forget.&nbsp; The junior buried a three pointer as time expired to send Friday's game into overtime.&nbsp; In the extra four minutes Hays outscored Garden City 12-1 and kept themselves in a tie atop the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 59-50 victory.

Hays scored the first ten points of the game and led the entire first half. The Indians lead was never less than four points and pushed their advantage back to a game high ten with thirty seconds to go in the second quarter.

Garden City's Azavier Williams scored at the buzzer to cut the lead down to eight and ignite a third quarter explosion for the Buffaloes.&nbsp; A 15-2 run for Garden City grabbed the lead away from Hays and built a 35-30 advantage with 2:30 to go in the third.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Despite the big run Hays trailed by just three going to the fourth quarter.&nbsp; Hays took possession of the lead at 40-39 midway through the final quarter.&nbsp; Garden City took the lead back less than thirty seconds later and held the advantage until the final seconds.&nbsp;

Garden City was called for a travel against full court pressure with 6.6 seconds remaining.&nbsp; That is when Krannawitter stepped up with the late game heroics. In the overtime Hays outscored Garden City 10-1 by making eight of nine free throws and their only field goal attempt

TJ Nunnery scored 16, Jason Krannawitter and Dalyn Schwarz each added 11.&nbsp; Azavier Williams scored a game high 17.

Hays splits with Garden City; Krannawitter with a bday to remember

HILL CITY- The final regular season installment of the Area Game of the Week series featured a battle of birds as the Hill City Ringnecks hosted the Plainville Cardinals.

The first quarter was a dog fight, but Plainville had the upper hand&nbsp; resulting in a 19-9 Plainville lead.

The second quarter was more of the same, leading to a 32-19 Cardinal lead at the half. Senior Aubree Dewey scored 16 of her teams 32 points.

The Ringnecks made a solid comeback push, cutting the lead to just 4 by the end of the third quarter. It was 39-35 heading to the final act.

The final quarter was all Cardinals. Plainville was able to clamp down defensively and allow only 2 points in the final quarter, leading to a 51-37 victory.&nbsp;

Aubree Dewey had an impressive stat line with 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Junior Breckan Born led the way for Hill City, as she netted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals move to 9-10 on the season. They'll play their final game of the regular season on Tuesday against TMP.

Hill City falls to 3-15. Their final game of the year will be on Tuesday when they host Norton.&nbsp;

The boys game was next, as Plainville and Hill City came in with identical 11-7 records.

Plainville led 15-5 early, but a 7-2 run by Hill City made it 17-12 after one.

The second quarter was a high-flying affair, with buckets aplenty. The lead was as little as 3, but the Cardinals were able to build the advantage to 43-30 by the half. Junior Clay Baalman had 13 first half points.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The third quarter was action packed and hard hitting. Hill City cut the lead to as little as 6, but faltered toward the end of the third. Plainville led 54-45 heading into the final frame.&nbsp;

Hill City gave the Cardinals all they wanted in the fourth but Plainville's resilience won out, as they were victorious 69-62.&nbsp;

Sophomore Anders Dewey finished with 15 points off the bench. Senior Jared Casey had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Senior Jacob Lindenman led the way for Hill City with 16 points. Senior Dalen Journigan had 15 points.

The loss ends a 6-game Hill City win streak. They play their final regular season game against Norton on Friday.

Planville is now 12-7. They host TMP on Tuesday to close out their season.

Area Game of the Week: Plainville at Hill City

HAYS, Kan. -&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5290">Zach Berg</a>&nbsp;tossed eight scoreless innings and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5298">Corbin Truslow</a>&nbsp;drove in the lone run of the game on a 10th-inning sacrifice fly in a series-opening victory over CSU-Pueblo for the Fort Hays State baseball team Friday (Feb. 21). The Tigers are now 10-3 on the season, while the ThunderWolves move to 3-4 overall.

With a stiff wind blowing in and both starting pitchers looking sharp, both offenses struggled to get things going all afternoon. The Tigers did not record a hit until the fourth inning against Pueblo starter Tim McIntyre and did not advance a runner to third base until the eighth inning, while the ThunderWolves were limited to just four hits over 10 innings.

CSU-Pueblo had two prime chances to score in the first two innings, but Berg worked out of both jams before settling into a groove. The ThunderWolves opened the game with a double to left center before working a walk. The next batter advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, but Berg got out of the inning with a pop up and a groundout. CSU-Pueblo recorded another double to open the second inning before Berg struck out the side to get out of the jam.

Tiger baseball wins in extra innings over Thunderwolves



EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State Softball struggled to generate runs in its pair of games on Friday in Oklahoma at the Edmond Regional Softball Festival. The Tigers fell 8-1 in their first contest to 21st-ranked Texas A&amp;M-Commerce before getting shutout 1-0 against Cameron. FHSU moved to 8-6 overall on the season.

Texas A&amp;M-Commerce 8, Fort Hays State 1 The Lions used the power game at the plate to put up all eight of their runs. They opened the scoring in the first with a 2-RBI double to left center by pitcher Alyssa LeBlanc. The lead doubled in the third inning on a 2-run homer by Madison Schaefer.

LeBlanc held the Tigers hitless through 3.2 innings, but allowed her only run of the game on the Tigers' only hit. After LeBlanc loaded the bases with a walk, hit batter, and another walk,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5343">Elise Capra</a>&nbsp;pushed a single through the right side of the infield to plate a run. LeBlanc prevented any further damage by getting a weak grounder to end the Tiger threat. The Tigers only had one other batter reach base the remainder of the game, coming on an error in the seventh.

The first of the two walks was a seven-pitch at bat, while the second was a nine-pitch at bat with three foul balls.

The Tigers twice had their leadoff batter reach base, occurring in the third and sixth innings. A pop up by the second batter in the third and strikeouts from the second and third batters in the sixth kept runners from advancing into scoring position with less than two outs.

Nelson moved to 3-2 on the season with the loss, allowing five hits and three walks. Bethany Hines pitched the complete game shutout for Cameron with nine strikeouts, moving to 6-4 on the year. She did not allow a walk.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State battled toe-to-toe with the 23rd-ranked
Rogers State Hillcats Thursday night but couldn’t overcome poor 3-point shooting and lost 74-68. The Tigers (12-13, 5-11 MIAA) have lost
two-straight following a season-long five-game win streak. The Hillcats (21-5,
13-4 MIAA) have won 10 of their last 11 and moved into second place in the MIAA
following Missouri Southern’s last second loss at No. 1 Northwest
Missouri State.

After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Tigers built
several six-point leads, the last coming with 7:08 to play in the first half. Rogers
State answered with a 16-5 run to go up five and led 39-36 at halftime.

The Hillcats scored the first five points of the second half
to build their biggest lead of the game at 44-36. The Tigers scored the next
seven to pull within one and eventually took the lead back at 52-49 on an Aaron Nicholson three-point play with 12:14 left. 

Rogers State scored the next six points and took the lead back for good. The Tigers hit only one of their next 10 shots over the next eight minutes but stayed in the game at the free throw line, shooting 35 in the game.

The Tigers shot 46-percent for the game but went 1-for-14
from three-point range and were 0-for-9 from distance in the second half.

The Hillcats shot 45-percent but went 9-for-19 from distance
and 19-of-22 from the free throw line.

Nyjee Wright led the Tigers with 17 points. Jared Vitztum
added 12 and 10 rebounds and Gilbert Peters scored 10.

Marques Sumner hit five 3s and led the Hillcats with 23

All five Tiger starters scored double-figures led by Kacey
Kennett’s 16 points. Kennett hit four threes and pulled down six rebounds.
Jaden Hobbs added 14 points and three assists, Whitney Randall and Belle
Barbieri both scored 12 and Taylor Rolfs added 10.

Barbieri also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for her
eighth double-double of the season.

It is coming down to crunch time in the 2019-20 basketball season for the Fort Hays State Men's Basketball team with just two weeks remaining in regular season play. The Tigers continue their quest to finish within the top 10 of the MIAA standings and make the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City. A big hurdle sits in their way Thursday night when they play host to No. 23 ranked Rogers State at 7:30 pm. FHSU enters at 12-12 overall, 5-10 in the MIAA, while Rogers State is 20-5 overall, 12-4 in the MIAA.

The Tigers played well against the Hillcats for nearly 25 minutes earlier this year in Claremore, but went cold from the field and turned the ball over 10 times in the final 16 minutes, seeing a 7-point lead turn into a 10-point loss. It was the first-ever meeting between FHSU and Rogers State in men's basketball, so this will be the first-ever trip for Rogers State to Gross Memorial Coliseum on Thursday night.

Fort Hays State enters the week tied for ninth in the MIAA standings with Pittsburg State at 5-10. Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri lurk only a half-game back in a tie for 11th&nbsp;at 5-11. Emporia State is only one game back in 12th&nbsp;at 4-11 in conference play.

Fort Hays State had a five-game win streak snapped at Lincoln this past Saturday, a three-point loss in overtime.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5315">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;had a career-high 24 points and added 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. He continues to lead the Tigers at 14 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

The Tigers have won their last four home games, a run that includes Kansas Wesleyan, Nebraska-Kearney, Newman, and Central Oklahoma. The Tigers are 4-0 at home against MIAA teams they play or have played twice in the regular season. They will be meeting Rogers State and Northeastern State for the second time this week.

WICHITA, Kan. - The 22nd-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team dropped its final dual of the regular season on Wednesday (Jan. 19, losing to Newman 26-14. The Tigers wrap up the dual season 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA while Newman improves to 5-3 on the year and 2-2 in league action.

Newman took control early with pins in each of the first two matches of the evening. Second-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5381">Brandon Ball</a>&nbsp;helped the Tigers turn things around with his 13th victory in as many tries this season, earning an 11-2 major decision against Baylor Newman. The senior recorded three takedowns and two escapes while picking up two penalty points and a ride time point, moving to 3-0 in MIAA duals this season.

The Jets responded with wins in each of the next four matches, taking a commanding 26-4 lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5391">Aryus Jones</a>&nbsp;stopped the momentum with an impressive 6-0 victory over Nate Panagakis at 184 pounds. Jones took an early 2-0 lead with a first period takedown before preventing Panagakis from escaping for the duration of the second period. Jones upped the lead to 3-0 with a quick escape in the final period before grabbing a final takedown to secure the victory.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5388">Jordan Davis</a>&nbsp;added to the Tiger total with another decision at 197 pounds, outlasting Ivan Balavage, 9-7. The senior recorded takedowns in all three periods and added a pair of escapes and a ride time point to pick up his second MIAA dual win of the season.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5387">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;moved to 3-1 in conference duals on the year with a dominant 8-0 victory over Thor Balavage. No. 22 FHSU wrestling falls at Newman

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State baseball senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5291">Garrett Stephens</a>&nbsp;has been selected as the Mammoth Turf Baseball Hitter of the Week, announced Wednesday by the league office.

Stephens helped the Tigers (9-3) to a sweep of New Mexico Highlands over the weekend, batting .733 with four extra-base hits. He was 11-for-15 with three doubles, one home run, seven runs scored and five RBI. Adding in a walk and a hit-by-pitch, the senior reached base in 13 of his 17 plate appearances.

His fifth home run of the season on Sunday helped the Tigers complete a come-from-behind 7-6 win. He has now hit safely in 10 of the 12 games this season and is riding an eight-game hitting streak. The catcher gunned down the only runner who tried to steal a base this weekend, his sixth caught stealing of the year.

Stephens leads all Division II in hits and total bases while leading the MIAA in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored, RBI and home runs.

He is the first Tiger to earn a weekly MIAA award since Alex Weiss in 2018 (4/17/18).

Tiger baseball wraps up a long homestand this weekend (Feb. 21-23) when it hosts CSU-Pueblo for another four-game series. Things get underway at Larks Park on Friday at 3 p.m. before a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday. The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team sits in eighth in the initial release of the 2020 NCAA Division II Central Region rankings, released Wednesday.

The Tigers (18-6, 9-6 MIAA) have an overall Division II record of 15-6 and an in-region record of 14-6. Their in-region winning percentage of .700 is tied for 10th-best in the region, but wins over two of the top teams in the region helped the Tigers move up to eighth in the eyes of the regional ranking committee. FHSU opened the year with a win over second-ranked Minnesota Duluth before adding a dominating home victory against No. 4 Emporia State last month.

Fort Hays State is one of five MIAA teams listed as the top 10 teams in the region, joined by top-ranked Central Missouri, fourth-ranked Emporia State, No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney and No. 10 Central Oklahoma. The Tigers will play one more regular season game against a regionally-ranked opponent next week when they travel to Edmond, Okla. to take on Central Oklahoma (Feb. 27). The NSIC has three teams ranked in the top six while the other two spots in the top 10 went to schools from the GAC.

The 22nd-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team wraps up the regular season Wednesday with a road dual against in-state rival Newman. Action from Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan. is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

The Tigers (5-6, 1-2 MIAA) have never lost to the Jets (4-3, 1-2 MIAA) in dual action, winning all 13 meetings since the series began in 2004. FHSU is a perfect 6-0 in Wichita.

A win Wednesday would give the Tigers a .500 or better record in duals for the ninth time in 12 seasons under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=867">Chas Thompson</a>. Thompson is the winningest coach in program history, climbing to 91 wins to date.

Tuesday high school basketball scores

RANSOM- A special Tuesday edition of the Area Game of the Week took us to Ransom, where the Western Plains-Healy Bobcats were set to do battle with the Northern Valley Huskies

The girls game was first up. The two teams fought back and forth for most of the first half, but the Bobcats were able to pull away thanks to 9 first half points by junior Jobi Roemer. They led 23-11 at the break.

The Bobacats maintained the lead in the 3rd quarter and led 34-22 heading into the final frame.&nbsp;

Northern Valley made several comeback attempts, cutting the lead to as little as 8, but in the end Western Plains-Healy was victorious 46-32.

Jobi Roemer led all scorers with 13 points. Tabitha Williams had a double-double with a dozen points and 13 rebounds.

Sophomore Andromeda Hausserman led the way for the Huskies with 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Northern Valley fell to 2-18 on the season. Western Plains is now 7-11.

The boys game was next up, and it had no shortage of excitement. Northern Valley led 12-7 after a quarter. They extended the lead to 16- 7 early in the second quarter.

The Bobcats then went on a 14-2 run to take a 21-18 lead. It looked like we would go to halftime that way, buy Alex Vanpatten of Northern Valley hit a 3 at the buzzer to tie it at 21 heading into the half.&nbsp;

Northern Valley came out strong in the third quarter, scoring the first 6 points of the half. They led 37-30 heading into the final frame.

The Huskies really ratcheted down in the final quarter, holding the Bobcats to just 3 points en-route to a 52-33 win.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Senior Alex Vanpatten and sophomore Brady Sides both finished with 11 points for Northern Valley. Junior Brenden Sammons had 10, all in the second half. 

Bobcat junior Bryan Buffington finished 1 board away from a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Moises Gomez led all scorers with 13 points.

Northern Valley is now 13-5. They finish the season with a non-league game at Hoxie on Tuesday.

Western Plains-Healy falls to 6-9 on the year. They'll travel to Weskan for their final game before regionals.

Area Game of the Week: Northern Valley vs. Western Plains-Healy

The Great Bend Panthers girls and boys basketball teams
picked up a doubleheader sweep of the TMP basketball teams Tuesday at Al
Billinger Fieldhouse.

The TMP Lady Monarchs jumped out to an 8-2 lead with Emilee
Lane scoring six of the first eight points for TMP. But the Monarchs were held without
a field goal for nearly 11 minutes while Great Bend outscored TMP 6-0 to tie
the game at eight at halftime.

The only field goal in the second quarter came with four
second left in the quarter on a Great Bend layup by Jenna Mauler that tied the
game at eight.

Megan Hamel knocked in TMP’s first three of the game to open
the second half and a pair of Lane free throws gave TMP a 13-8 lead. 

Down five, Great Bend outscored TMP 10-0 to build a five-point
lead in the third quarter. A lead they would never give up.

The Monarchs were able to close the deficit to one twice in
the third quarter and made four straight three pointers down the stretch in the
fourth quarter but Great Bend made just enough free throws on their way to the
42-38 win.

TMP’s Emilee Lane finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds,
her fifth career double-double.

Great Bend’s Jenna Mauler led all scorers with 14 points.

The Great Bend Panthers opened the game on a 13-4 run and
never looked back on their way to an 80-68 win.

Great Bend built a nine-point lead to open the game but the
Monarchs were able to briefly close the gap to four before the Panthers built
the lead to eight at the end the quarter at 19-11.

A Mason Robbins three-point play for TMP cut the Great Bend
lead to five at 19-14 to open the second quarter but Great Bend answered with a
16-6 run to take a 35-22 lead. Great Bend led 37-27 at halftime.

Great Bend extended the lead to 15 a couple of times in the third
quarter before taking a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter.

In the final frame the Monarchs closed within 10 a couple of
times as Great Bend earned the 80-68 win.

TMP’s Jackson Schulte finished with a team-high 14 points.
Lucas Lang, Ryan Stoecklein and Carson Jacobs added 13 each.

Great Bend’s Alex Schremmer scored a game-high 31 points.

The Monarchs will host Stockton on Friday.

Great Bend sweeps TMP

The girls game had a little bit of everything in a 47-44 Hays High victory over Abilene Tuesday night.&nbsp; The Indians used a 16-3 run in the second quarter to build a 27-14 lead at halftime.&nbsp;

The Indians led by thirteen still with 4:40 left in the third quarter but scored just six points over the next twelve minutes.&nbsp; Abilene used the time to outscore Hays 23-6 run and lead 44-40 with forty seconds left in the game.

Hays missed two free throws with just over 37 seconds remaining but Re Green grabbed the offensive rebound and fed Tasiah Nunnery for the final of her career high 21 points while closing the gap down to 44-42.&nbsp; Abilene never shot again in the game as they turned the ball over the next three possessions.&nbsp; 

Following the first turnover the Indians missed a shot but Green again cleaned up the glass and her own put back tied the game at 44.&nbsp; She was fouled on the play and banked in the free throw for a 45-44 lead with ten seconds remaining.&nbsp; Brooklyn Schaffer made both ends of a one and one opportunity with five seconds left after the next turnover for the final margin of 47-44.

Hays improves to 5-12 on the season and Abilene now has the same record.&nbsp; The two will rematch in Abilene next Thursday to end the regular season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dylan Ruder scored at the buzzer ending the first quarter for 12-11 Hays lead and never trailed again on their way to a 56-46 win over state ranked Abilene on Tuesday night.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A 10-0 run that ended the first quarter and began the second quarter pushed the Indian advantage to seven for the first of eight times.&nbsp; Hays led by seven for most of the second quarter before Abilene tipped in a missed shot as the halftime horn sounded to trim score to 25-20.

Abilene tied the game two times in the second half.&nbsp; A 7-0 run in the third quarter tied the game at 29 points and another 7-0 that began at the end of the third and ended in the early fourth time the game at 38.&nbsp; The Cowboys had a chance to take the lead on a free throw on the basket that tied game but missed the shot short.&nbsp;

TJ Nunnery scored just twenty seconds later to give the Indians the lead and spark a 12-3 run.&nbsp; Five different Indians scored during the run that gave Hays a 50-41 advantage with 2:35 remaining.&nbsp; Abilene had one last charge as they converted a three point play and closed the gap down to 50-46 with just under ninety seconds left to play.&nbsp;&nbsp;
