KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes thought for a moment that the Chiefs were headed to overtime. So did Ravens counterpart Lamar Jackson, who had found Isaiah Likely in the back of the end zone with no time left for a touchdown that appeared to tie the game.

In the end, the NFL's season opener Thursday night was decided by referee Shawn Hochuli undertaking a video review.

With a capacity crowd that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ravens-chiefs-taylor-swift-nfl-9f78a6dad40ff62993c2462e9c653964">included pop superstar Taylor Swift</a>&nbsp;waiting in anticipation, Hochuli needed just seconds looking at that final play before making his announcement:&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1831903953250136219">Likely landed with his toe on the endline</a>, putting the Baltimore tight end out of bounds, and giving the Chiefs a 27-20 victory as they began pursuit of a record third consecutive Super Bowl title.

“Definitely nerve-wracking because it looked good from my angle on the sideline," Mahomes said, “but then the first view you could see his cleat. ... You have to wear white cleats next time. That's my advice for him.”

Mahomes threw for 291 yards and with a touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy, who also scored a rushing TD in his NFL debut, as the Chiefs not only won the rematch of last season’s AFC title game but beat the Ravens for the fifth time in six meetings.

That lopsided ledger has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ravens-chiefs-nfl-season-opener-arrowhead-stadium-e09ee6b958e96be75cfceeda74dab02f">especially frustrating for Jackson,</a>&nbsp;who has called Kansas City the Ravens’ “kryptonite.” He was sublime Thursday night, throwing for 273 yards and a touchdown and adding 122 yards on the ground, but that review of the final play left him to rue another missed opportunity to finally upstage Mahomes and Co.

“I thought it was a touchdown,” Jackson said. “Still think it was a touchdown.”

The Ravens were trailing 27-17 in the fourth quarter before kicking a field goal, then got the ball back at their own 13 with 1:50 left and no timeouts. Jackson completed a couple of throws to Likely, who had 111 yards receiving and a score, and scrambled for a crucial first down. Two plays later, Jackson found Rashod Bateman down the sideline for 38 yards to move the Ravens to the Kansas City 10 with 19 seconds remaining.

Jackson’s first pass was a throwaway, but his second missed wide-open Zay Flowers in the back of the end zone. Then came the final throw, after Jackson had scrambled for what seemed like an eternity, and Likely looked like he had forced overtime.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh even signaled for his team to try a winning 2-point conversion, though it never got the chance.

“I thought our guys (overcame) setbacks at times, and fought like crazy to overcome. It looked like we had an opportunity there to tie the game up and try to win,” Harbaugh said. “Didn’t happen at the end, but our guys fought.”

The wild ending came after the start was delayed about 20 minutes by a storm that brought heavy rain and lightning.

The Ravens proceeded to open with an 11-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Derrick Henry, who had tormented the Chiefs in six previous meetings while he was with Tennessee, plunging into the end zone from 5 yards out for the early lead.

But the high-octane Chiefs, trying to avoid back-to-back season-opening losses, needed just two minutes to answer. Mahomes twice connected with Rashee Rice, who has so far avoided any NFL punishment for his role in an alleged street-racing crash in Dallas, before Worthy showed why the Chiefs made him their first-round pick with his 21-yard touchdown run.

After those two drives, though, the first half was mostly marked by Week 1 blunders.

Jackson was strip-sacked by Chris Jones deep in his own territory, leading to a Kansas City field goal. Flowers was stopped short of the first-down marker on fourth-and-3 near midfield on the Ravens’ next series, leading to another field goal. And even Justin Tucker, one of the league’s most accurate kickers, pulled a 53-yard field-goal attempt wide left.

The Chiefs were not immune to mistakes. Mahomes' pass was picked off by Roquan Smith on a poor throw late in the first half, leading to a chip-shot field goal that got Baltimore — which trailed twice at halftime all of last season — to 13-10 at the break.

Yet the Ravens’ inability to get into the end zone, and swing the momentum their way, ultimately proved costly.

The Chiefs opened the second half with an 81-yard touchdown march to extend their lead. Then, after Jackson had connected with Likely on a broken play for a 49-yard touchdown throw, Mahomes drove them 70 yards against the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL last season for a touchdown that made it 27-17 with 10 minutes to go.

Tucker made it a one-score game with his field goal with 4:54 to go, and Baltimore quickly forced a punt. But despite Jackson’s impassioned play, he was left to trudge off the field after another disappointing loss to the Chiefs.

“It was a fight down to the end,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “When they say it's a game of inches, might be shorter than that.”

Swift, the girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, wasn’t the only star attending the NFL’s opening night. Quincy Hall, the Olympic 400-meter champion, was in the crowd along with AC Milan midfielder Christian Pulisic, who will join his U.S. teammates Saturday night for an exhibition against Canada at nearby Children’s Mercy Park.

Baltimore: LB Kyle Van Noy left six plays into the second half because of an eye injury and did not return.

With limited offensive chances, it looked as though the Tigers might pick up a win in a match where they were outshot by nine (13-4). But the CSU-Pueblo offensive pressure cashed in late. The Tigers got an 8-save debut from transfer&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/mackenzie-caldwell/8128">Mackenzie Caldwell</a>&nbsp;in goal, while CSU-Pueblo keeper Jacqueline Dominguez only made two saves in the match.

HAYS, Kan. – In a thrilling season opener, Fort Hays State narrowly defeated Rockhurst 2-1 at FHSU Soccer Stadium on Thursday afternoon. FHSU netted&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/coaches/alex-nichols/1294">Alex Nichols</a>' first win as head coach of the Tigers and moved ahead in a close series history with the Hawks, now 4-3-3.

Fort Hays State took control in the first half, maintaining slight dominance in possession. They capitalized on their pressure in the 36th minute when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/elias-ovelar-semeniuk/7935">Elias Ovelar Semeniuk</a>&nbsp;opened the scoring, assisted by both&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/mathis-lefevre/8353">Mathis Lefevre</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/tadhg-walsh/7942">Tadhg Walsh</a>. Lefevre took a free kick from mid field and booted it into the box for Walsh who headed to the head of Ovelar Semeniuk to put the ball in the net. The Hawks only managed one shot in the first half as the Tigers led 1-0 at the break.

Rockhurst gained intensity in the second half, outshooting their first-half performance and equalizing the score in the 74th minute following a brief lightning delay at the stadium. Asier Olano found the net with an unassisted goal on a long free kick, leveling the match.

With the end near, Fort Hays State found a late bit of fortune to move back into winning position. In the 88th minute,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/ibrahim-madad/8356">Ibrahim Madad</a>&nbsp;scored the decisive goal in close to the net, assisted by a perfectly placed Walsh corner kick, securing a 2-1 victory. Walsh nabbed his second assist of the match.

Fort Hays State outshot Rockhurst 16-6. Rockhurst's keeper Franco Brunoro made five saves, while Lefevre of FHSU made one. The Tigers put seven shots on goal.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/felix-tellez-ramirez/8366">Felix Tellez Ramirez</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers in shots with four.

Now 1-0, the Tigers set their sights on a neutral match with Upper Iowa on Sunday in Kansas City at 5 p.m. The match will be at Children's Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village. The Tigers play their next two matches at that venue over the next 7-day span.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tommy Pham hit his first home run for Kansas City, a tiebreaking, three-run drive in a four-run fourth inning, and the Royals stopped a season-high, seven-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night.

Seth Lugo (15-8) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. He is one win behind Detroit’s Tarik Skubal and Atlanta’s Chris Sale, who are tied for the major league lead. Lugo is 11-1 with a 1.40 ERA in 15 starts with four days’ rest.

Kansas City (76-65) closed within one percentage point of Minnesota (75-64) for the second AL wild card spot. The Royals and Twins are both 4 1/2 games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland (80-60).

Royals manager Matt Quatraro returned after missing two games following the death of his mother.

“Really happy for those guys,” Quatraro said. “Nobody wants to lose, and when you string a whole week of games together where you don’t win any of them, it wears on you, mentally, physically. It makes it tougher to believe in yourself, so however it had to happen ... it’s good to get a win.”

During the seven-game skid, the Royals had scored three runs or fewer in six straight games, the team’s longest such streak since Aug. 15-21, 2022. The Royals had scored two runs or fewer in five straight, their longest span since June 7-13, 2018.

Pham, claimed off waivers from St. Louis on Saturday, broke a 1-1 tie with his homer off Ben Lively (11-9), who allowed seven hits in four innings. The drive deep into the left-field seats was Pham’s eighth home run this season and gave Pham his first RBIs with the Royals.

“It just seems like we’ve had some chances and we just couldn’t come through with the big hit until tonight,” Pham said. “It felt very good because I’ve been having a hard time barreling up balls to the pull side, and today it was something I worked on, and it’s even better to see it translate into the game.”

Quatraro said it was a relief to have someone come through.

“Somebody’s got to let the pressure off, and he did,” Quatraro said. “It was nice to tie it up ... but you’re trying to play for a big inning there. It took till two outs to do it but that was a big, big hit for Tommy."

Paul DeJong reached on an infield single, Robbie Grossman singled for his first Royals hit since he was claimed from Texas on Saturday, and Michael Massey hit a tying single.

Lugo got help from DeJong when the third baseman made a diving grab on Daniel Schneeman’s sharp grounder in the hole in the fifth. Lugo also benefited from three double plays, one started by the pitcher

“It looked he really had a good curveball. He got in on the lefties with the cutter and when they were looking in, he softened it up away,” Quatraro said. “Pretty good soft contact night, I would say, the double plays, just had it all going.”

Lugo had a loss and no-decision since beating the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 19.

“I thought I threw the ball well,” Lugo said. “I thought I was using both sides of the plate with my fastball and breaking balls and kept the hitters off balance. I used a pretty good mix out there tonight.”

José Ramírez put Cleveland ahead 1-0 in the third with a two-out bloop single.

Kris Bubic struck out the side in the eighth and Lucas Erceg worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save and sixth with the Royals.

Guardians: 1B Josh Naylor did not play after leaving Tuesday’s game with a back spasm.

Royals: OF Hunter Renfroe (hamstring) was 0 for 4 with a sacrifice fly as began a rehab assignment with Double-A Northwest Arkansas. He has been on the 10-day IL since Aug. 25.

Royals INF CJ Alexander was claimed off waivers by Oakland. He was designated for assignment on Saturday.

Guardians: LHP Matthew Boyd (1-1, 2.38) starts Friday’s series opener at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — No. 9 hitter Brayan Rocchio drove in four runs and the Cleveland Guardians beat Kansas City 7-1 Tuesday night, extending the Royals’ losing streak to a season-high seven.

Kansas City was held to two runs or fewer for the fifth straight game and managed just four hits. The Royals’ losing streak is its longest since a 10-game skid from June 5-16 last year.

Since tying Cleveland for the AL Central lead on Aug. 27, the Royals (76-65) have dropped 5 1/2 games behind the Guardians (80-59), who have won five of six. Kansas City maintained a 4 1/2-game lead for the final AL wild card.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro missed his second game after the death of his mother Dorann Stagnitta. Bench coach Paul Hoover served as acting manager.

Cleveland first baseman Josh Naylor left for a pinch runner after singling in the eighth inning because of lower back tightness.

Steven Kwan had a two-run single for the Guardians and Kyle Manzardo had three hits.

Tanner Bibee (11-6) allowed one run and two hits in six innings — just the 39th time a Cleveland starter pitched six or more innings.

“I thought he was great, just attacking, throwing a lot of strikes," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "Especially after the third, he settled in and threw a ton of strikes, kept them off balance.”

Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. had his big league-best 57th multihit game of the season.

Brady Singer (9-10) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Rocchio’s sacrifice fly in the second and Andrés Giménez’s bloop RBI single in the fifth built a 2-0 lead.

Kansas City loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but Tommy Pham failed to tag up at third on Salvador Perez’s line drive to left. Paul DeJong followed with a sacrifice fly and Bibee struck out MJ Melendez.

“He can make pitches in big-time moments,” Vogt said. “Tanner is a big-time pitcher. He wants those moments, and for him to be able to slow down and execute in that situation was huge.”

Bibee is 7-3 with a 2.71 ERA in 14 road starts, and the Guardians are 20-7 in his outings this year.

“I was just trying to execute the next pitch,” Bibee said of the sixth inning. “When I get into a lot of trouble, I feel like it’s trying to do way too much. I think one goal for me today was just to execute one pitch at a time.”

Rocchio hit his seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth, a two-run drive against Sam Long that was just inside the left-field foul pole. The 23-year-old rookie homered after failing on a pair of bunt attempts.

“When I missed the first two bunts, I’m trying to stay calm and be patient to move the runner to second base. But I put a good swing on it," Roochio said. “Awesome, because I know if I don’t do anything, maybe he’s mad at me” in a reference to Vogt.

“It’s really easy when you don’t do your job or don’t get the job done to get down on yourself and just give away and at-bat, but he got pitch up and he crushed it,” Vogt said.

Rocchio added a bases-loaded walk in the eighth against James McArthur for a career-best four RBIs.

“What you saw in the sixth is probably what we need to do hopefully from inning one, just stringing a couple at-bats together, passing the baton and the next guy up hopefully can do the job,” Hoover said. “We want to be successful, but sometimes we want it so bad that we try to do a little too much.”

Williams shared the honor this week with Thomas Cook of Pittsburg State. Both FHSU and PSU picked up wins over nationally ranked teams last week.

Williams, a native of Tampa, Fla., finished with 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble in the 21-7 win over No. 24 ranked Angelo State. He matched his career high for tackles in a game, which he also accomplished against Averett in 2021 at his former school of North Carolina Wesleyan. Williams had a team-high seven solo tackles, including one on special teams. Five of his 11 tackles were on plays resulting in one yard or less gained by the Rams. Four of his stops were on third downs, with three forcing the Rams to punt and the fourth coming just before a turnover on downs late in the game. Williams helped the Tiger defense limit Angelo State to just 203 total yards.

Cook enjoyed a career day in helping No. 6 ranked Pitt State to a 19-3 season-opening win over No. 3 ranked Ferris State. The senior from Overland Park, Kan., made five tackles, including a quarterback sack. He also forced a fumble and recovered another as the Gorillas created four takeaways in the contest while limiting the Bulldogs to 38 net rushing yards and 171 total yards. Cook's forced fumble came with 7:18 to play in the third quarter and the Gorillas leading 9-3. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State women's cross country team was picked third in the 2024 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Tiger men rank eighth in the preseason ranks.

The Tiger women accumulated 114 points in the balloting process, just 14 behind second-ranked Missouri Southern. Pittsburg State grabbed 11 of 13 first-place votes to lead the way with 143 points.

The Tiger men totaled 54 points, two behind seventh-ranked Emporia State. Pittsburg State also tops the men's poll by just three points over Northwest Missouri State, 113 to 110.The women's team features seven returners, two transfers and eight freshmen. The Tigers return one All-Region performer in&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/jaycee-vath/8137">Jaycee Vath</a>&nbsp;and a pair of All-MIAA performers in Vath and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/darian-hudgeons/8133">Darian Hudgeons</a>, who has claimed All-MIAA honors each of the last two seasons. Five of the seven returners placed in the top scoring five for the Tigers at least twice last season, including three that were in the top five in all six races (Vath, Hudgeons and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/abbye-hudson/8134">Abbye Hudson</a>), one that was in the top five three times (<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/brenna-murphy/8135">Brenna Murphy</a>) and one that was in the top five twice (<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/madison-sutterfield/8136">Madison Sutterfield</a>).

The men's squad returns 13 student-athletes from last year's squad, including five different competitors that contributed to the team scoring at least once last year.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/jaret-pfizenmaier/8157">Jaret Pfizenmaier</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/corbin-ricke/8158">Corbin Ricke</a>&nbsp;were both in the Tiger top five at all six meets last year, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/noah-morenz/8156">Noah Morenz</a>&nbsp;was in the scoring five at five different races. The Tigers added 10 newcomers this year, including seven freshmen and three transfers.

The Tigers will open the 2024 season at the 76th Annual JK Gold Classic Saturday morning (Sept. 7) at Clapp Golf Course in Wichita, Kan. The race, hosted by Wichita State University, will begin at 8 a.m. with the men's 6K and will conclude with the women's 5K at 9 a.m.

This is FHSU's first competition in Wichita since 2009 when the Tigers traveled down interstate 135 to compete at the Friends Invitational.

The Tigers will then host the FHSU Tiger Open on Friday, September 13 beginning at 9:15 a.m. at the Rolling Ridge Cross Country Course.

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the non-football injury list, which removes him from the active 53-man roster and means he will be out for at least the first four games of the season. Kansas City plays Baltimore, Cincinnati, Atlanta and the Los Angeles Chargers during that span.

Edwards-Helaire has been dealing with PTSD and vomiting after a 2018 incident when he was in college at LSU.
