KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eddie Rosario kept his bat on his shoulder. Salvador Perez held his glove still to frame the pitch.

Both listened for Dan Bellino to make the call.

The plate umpire waited a tense moment before finally signaling ball on what could just as easily have been strike three, giving Rosario another chance. He swatted the very next pitch into the right-field stands for a tiebreaking three-run homer Monday night that sent Cleveland to an 8-6 win over the Kansas City Royals.

“I was just looking for hard contact,” Rosario said through an interpreter. “I wasn't looking for a home run.”

He got it. So did Josh Naylor, who added a two-run shot off Royals reliever Jakob Junis (1-2) two batters later that turned what would have been a scoreless seventh inning with Rosario's would-be punch-out into a five-run frame.

Bryan Shaw (1-0) coughed up a run in relief of Indians starter Aaron Civale, and James Karinchak gave up Hunter Dozier's two-run homer later in the seventh, before their bullpen finally wrapped up their sixth win in eight games.

Emmanuel Clase worked around a single in the ninth for his sixth save. He's yet to allow an earned run in 13 1/3 innings.

“We're playing good baseball. We're playing aggressive baseball,” Rosario said, “and that's going to help us win games.”

Naylor finished with three RBIs and Franmil Reyes returned from the paternity list to drive in two more for the Indians. Whit Merrifield hit a two-run homer and Jorge Soler drove in two runs for Kansas City.

Daniel Lynch, the latest in the Royals' promising pitching pipeline, had little to show for his solid big league debut.

The No. 34 overall pick in the 2018 draft, Lynch overcame some early nerves to allow four hits and four walks and left to a standing ovation with a 3-1 lead. But the lanky left-hander also left two runners on with two outs in the fifth inning, and reliever Scott Barlow immediately gave up Reyes' double to tie the game 3-all.

“It's always a hard decision to pull a pitcher out, especially when you have a starter and you want to see him go deeper in the game,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “You're talking about his first day out, being in stress throughout the game, the third time through their order — the meat of their order — and we had a well-rested bullpen.”

The outcome didn't take too much shine off an otherwise memorable day, though.

“I felt like I could barely see, I was so juiced up,” Lynch said. “It was just a really amazing experience.”

The Royals wasted a chance to regain the lead and put pressure on Cleveland in the sixth. They loaded the bases with two outs before Andrew Benintendi hit a weak grounder to the right side of the infield to end the inning.

In the seventh, the Indians had a pair of runners aboard with two outs when Rosario — with a 1-2 count on him — watched a pitch from Junis miss just outside. Rosario homered on the next offering to give the Indians their first lead at 6-3, and Naylor's two-run homer provided a cushion they would ultimately need.

“You don't want to let them back in it,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said, “which is exactly what we did.”

Indians: OF Harold Ramirez was summoned from the taxi squad and started in center. OF Daniel Johnson was optioned to the taxi squad and LHP Kyle Nelson optioned to Triple-A Columbus.

Royals: RHP Jake Newberry was optioned to Triple-A Omaha and LHP Daniel Tillo went on the 60-day injured list.

Indians: OF Jordan Luplow (sore left groin) got the day off after getting hurt running out a grounder over the weekend. “We just weren't comfortable putting him out there today quite yet,” Francona said. “I think the trainers think it's resolve, but if it's not in the next day or so, we might have to do something.”

Royals: C Cam Gallagher (concussion protocol) was place on the seven-day IL and C Sebastian Rivero recalled just before the first pitch. ... SS Adalberto Mondesi (oblique) could begin a rehab assignment next week, GM Dayton Moore said.

Monarchs scored only one run and were swept 2-1 and 2-0 at Sacred Heart. TMP
has lost five straight and has scored only three runs in the the five games as

This season's opening round will feature best-of-3 series with winners moving on to a four-team double-elimination bracket the following weekend in Edmond, Oklahoma. Fort Hays State is the No. 5 seed in the eight-team tournament, while Rogers State is the No. 4 seed. The first two games of the Best-of-3 series will be on Friday (May 7) in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm at the Diamond Sports Complex, home of Rogers State. Should the teams split the doubleheader, they will return for the third game on Saturday (May 8) at 12 pm.

All of the games can be heard on KAYS (1400-AM, 94.3-FM). Fort Hays State (24-20) split its regular season doubleheader with Rogers State (30-13-1) in Hays back on April 23. The Hillcats took game one 2-0 before the Tigers took game two 3-1, so both teams are even in runs scored against each-other this season. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Andrelton Simmons and Mitch Garver homered in a seven-run third inning, and rookie Alex Kirilloff went deep for the fourth time in three games as the Minnesota Twins routed the Kansas City Royals 13-4 on Sunday.

José Berríos (3-2) took advantage of Minnesota’s recent tear at the plate to win for the first time in four starts. Berríos gave up four runs on six hits and struck out nine in six innings.

The Twins have won three of four and scored 35 runs during that stretch.

“More energy is a good way to put it,” Garver said. “I think approaches have been more consistent one through nine. Sometimes the ball hasn’t gone our way over the last few weeks, whether it’s a bloop that’s been caught. We hit a couple balls hard today that were caught also. Some of those things are starting to fall our way and I think that’s a good sign for things to come.”

Kansas City starter Brad Keller was undone by the long ball and his own defense. Keller (2-3) gave up all seven runs in the third, but only two were earned after a pair of errors by third baseman Hunter Dozier.

Dozier later hit a three-run homer, but the AL Central-leading Royals have lost three of five.

“It was a very good road trip for us,” manager Mike Matheny said. “We did a lot of things well, just this one and the first game here, too, both of those aren’t very indicative of the kind of club we’ve been all season.”

Keller cruised through the first two innings, but things unraveled quickly in the third. The right-hander hit Jake Cave with a pitch and Simmons followed with his first home run of the season to the second deck in left field. Garver capped the inning with a three-run shot an estimated 436 feet to the second deck in left.

“Giving up the home run right there was definitely 100% on me, just missed location,” Keller said. “I felt like that’s what it was all day. Even if it was in the zone, it was not exactly where I wanted it to go. So, the burden is still on me, 100%.”

Kansas City couldn’t capitalize on some shaky defense by Minnesota in the sixth as Berríos struck out the final two batters he faced, yelling into his glove as he walked off the mound at the end of the inning.

Kirilloff, one of the top prospects in Minnesota’s organization, started his career 0 for 15. The hits started to fall and now he’s showing power. Kirilloff, who debuted in the playoffs last season, hit his first career homer Friday as part of a two-homer game. He went 4 for 12 in the series with eight RBIs.

“He was swinging it good when he didn’t have any hits,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He’s a good major league hitter the day we called him up and put him out there. We thought he could hit major league pitching. He’s showing us what he can do. It’s fun to watch good hitters, I’ll tell you that.”

Royals: RHP Brady Singer is scheduled to start Wednesday in his regular rotation spot after his foot was bruised Friday on a comebacker. ... C Cam Gallagher took foul balls off his helmet on consecutive pitches in the eighth. After each one, Gallagher took time to recover and was attended to by a trainer, but he stayed in the game. Matheny said Gallagher was going through tests after the game.

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State had its hopes of hosting a home series in the MIAA Tournament dashed on Saturday in a pair of losses to No. 13 ranked Central Oklahoma. The Tigers fell by scores of 5-3 and 8-1 and slipped to fifth place in the MIAA standings at the close of the regular season, seeing Rogers State charge past for fourth place on Saturday with a sweep of Washburn. With the wins, Central Oklahoma captured at least a share of the MIAA regular season championship as Central Missouri still has a makeup doubleheader to play at Washburn on Monday. The official announcement of the MIAA Tournament bracket will be made on Monday following that doubleheader. Barring any unforeseen circumstances or announcements, the Tigers will most likely be the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Tournament and will travel to Rogers State for the 3-game opening round series, May 7-8. Rogers State went on a six-game win streak at the end of the season to jump past the Tigers in the standings, sweeping its final three doubleheaders to finish 18-8 in the MIAA. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs had precious few holes to fill after reaching their second consecutive Super Bowl.

Good thing. They didn't have many draft picks to fill them.

The Chiefs traded their first-round choice in a package that landed two-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Orlando Brown from Baltimore, leaving them with just two second-round picks, a fourth-rounder and three more in the fifth and sixth.

Yet the Chiefs took advantage of the way the board fell by landing players with their first three selections that they rated much higher than where they were taken, but also filled substantial needs: Missouri linebacker Nick Bolton and Oklahoma center Creed Humphrey went in the second round and Florida State pass rusher Joshua Kaindoh in the fourth.

"We felt there was a lot of depth there in (rounds) two and three, and believe it or not, we were open to fielding some trade-down calls," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said. "We felt like there were a number of players there that we liked and again, there was a lot of flexibility. Those trades never really materialized, and we sat on the board."

Which worked out just fine for a team with designs on a third straight AFC title.

Bolton is a plug-and-play middle linebacker with whom the Chiefs were intimately familiar given his starring role just down Interstate 70 at Missouri. The Chiefs lost Damien Wilson to the Jaguars in free agency, creating a hole in the middle of their defense, but had already been hoping to get more athletic at that position.

Humphrey was widely considered the best center available yet fell into the late second round. That allowed the Chiefs to add him to their complete overhaul of an offensive line that was decimated by injuries and opt outs last season, and whose backups were unable to contain the Tampa Bay pass rush in a blowout loss in the Super Bowl.

"Big, wide, tough, gritty. I kind of labeled him a get-the-job-done type of guy," said Ryan Poles, one of the Chiefs' assistant directors of player personnel, who helps to oversee their draft. "He's a highly intelligent leader."

The Chiefs also were desperate to improve an inconsistent pass rush. They did that by landing Kaindoh, who slipped to the fourth round largely because of his injury history, but whose athletic traits give him plenty of upside.

"He's got a great attitude. He's smart. He works hard. All the intangibles you want in an individual, he has those," Chiefs area scout David Hinson said. "When the team loves him, coaches love him, the staff, you know you're getting a good individual, and then you watch the tape and you see flashes of a defensive end that you like to see."

The Chiefs made a minor swap of draft picks with the Jets to jump from 175 to 162 overall and take Duke tight end Noah Gray. The Chiefs have struggled to find a reliable second tight end behind Travis Kelce the past few years, and Gray is an athletic pass-catching threat that should giving Patrick Mahomes another downfield target.

"This kid really stood out when you looked at the board," Chiefs assistant director of pro personnel Mike Bradway said. "I thought he was one of the guys we really wanted to target. We didn't want to wait on the chances of him falling."

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Andrew Benintendi hit two homers, Salvador Perez homered and drove in three runs, and the Kansas City Royals cruised to an 11-3 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

Danny Duffy (4-1) continued his strong start to the season in helping the AL Central-leading Royals bounce back from Friday night’s 9-1 loss. He allowed one run and two hits in seven innings, striking out seven.

Matt Shoemaker (1-3) couldn’t sustain Minnesota’s momentum after back-to-back wins. He gave up nine runs and eight hits in just 3 1/3 innings.

Alex Kiriloff homered for the second straight day for Minnesota and Nelson Cruz added his 425th career homer.

Kiriloff’s homer in the seventh ended Duffy’s streak of 17 straight innings without allowing an earned run.

Duffy started the day with the best ERA in the majors (0.39), ahead of Jacob deGrom’s 0.51 mark. Duffy allowed one earned run in his first four starts this season and exited this game with at 0.60.

The letdown in the Super Bowl clearly convinced general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid that they needed to add more — and better — depth in front of quarterback Patrick Mahomes next season. “You know how (offensive line coach) Andy Heck does it with playing the five best,” Reid said. “He's going to give everyone an opportunity to show what they've got and we'll figure it out. HAYS - The Hays High baseball team had no problem with Liberal on Friday at the Hays High Field. The Indians won game one 10-0 then won the second contest 15-2. Both games ended early because of run-rule.

The Indians improve to 10-2 overall and close out Western Athletic Conference play with a 6-2 record. The Indians are a half-game back of Dodge City who beat Great Bend 7-4 Friday. The Red Demons close out league play May 11 vs. Liberal.

The Indians play Manhattan at 1:00 p.m. and Great Bend at 7:45 p.m. Friday in the Western Plains Diamond Classic.

Game 1: Hays 10, Liberal 0 (6 innings) The Indians scored two in the first and that was all starting pitcher Dylan Dreiling needed. Dreiling didn't allow a hit while striking out 10 over five innings of work. Carson Spray worked a scoreless fifth.

The Indians added two runs in the third then five in the fourth.

Dreiling and Dominic Bainter both had three hits and drove in two runs.

Game 2: Hays 15, Liberal 2 (5 innings) The Indians nearly batted around twice in the bottom of the first, scoring 12 runs. They added two in the second and one in the fourth.

Six of the Indians 11 hits were for extra bases including a triple from Dylan Dreiling. Ben Krannawitter, Dawson VonFeldt, Garrett Wellbrock, Dominica Bainter, Dalton Dale and Jack Fields all doubled.

VonFeldt, Dreiling and Bainter all had two hits. Bainter drove in four and Fields added two RBIs.

Starter Garrett Wellbrock pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Dalyn Schwarz allowed one run on six hits over two innings and picked up the win. Jack Field gave up a run on one hit in one inning of relief.

GOODLAND – The TMP-Marian softball team split their
doubleheader in Goodland Friday. The Monarchs rallied from an early deficit and
won game one 10-5 to end a three-game losing streak. In game two, the Cowgirls overcame
an early 8-0 deficit for a 13-11 victory.

The Monarchs erased an early 5-1 deficit by scoring five runs in the third to
take a 6-5 lead. They added two in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Jaci VonLIntel hit a bases-loaded RBI single followed by Sophia
Coulter’s bases-loaded double which scored three to tie the game. The Monarchs
took the lead for good on a fielder’s choice from Julianna Baalman which scored
Coulter.

Coulter went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored to
lead the Monarchs nine-hit attack.

Kyleigh Allen allowed five runs (one earned) on seven hits with
10 strikeouts and one walk and picked up the win.

The Monarchs lead 8-0 entering the bottom of the third but couldn’t overcome
eight errors. Goodland struck for five in the third, six in the fourth, one in
the fifth and two in the sixth to build a 13-8 lead. TMP scored three in the

Jaci VonLIntel hit a two-run double and Taylor Marvin added
a two-run single to give the Monarchs a 4-0 lead in the first. VonLintel
grounded into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded to push the lead to 5-0
in the second. Sophia Coulter doubled driving in two more runs to put TMP up
7-0. Kyleigh Allen made it 8-0 with a run-scoring single in the top of the

🥎 Monarchs split with Cowgirls

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team recorded four provisionals and captured six event victories at the 2021 Alex Francis Classic Friday afternoon (April 30) at the FHSU Track &amp; Field Facility. Sprinter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5916">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;took home first place in both the 100m dash and the 200m dash with a pair of blazing-fast times. The sophomore won the 100m race with a time of 10.32 before completing the 200m dash in 20.87. Both times would be personal-bests and are well under the NCAA Division II provisional mark, but high wind readings during both races will prevent them from counting for national consideration. The Tigers also had a pair of provisional performances in the pole vault competition from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5931">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5935">Jacob Clark</a>. Stanley placed first after clearing the 16-6.75 bar on his third and final attempt. Clark finished second as he was the only other competitor to make it safely over the 15-11 bar, doing so on his first attempt.  </figure>HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team recorded four provisionals and captured six event victories at the 2021 Alex Francis Classic Friday afternoon (April 30) at the FHSU Track &amp; Field Facility. Sprinter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5916">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;took home first place in both the 100m dash and the 200m dash with a pair of blazing-fast times. The sophomore won the 100m race with a time of 10.32 before completing the 200m dash in 20.87. Both times would be personal-bests and are well under the NCAA Division II provisional mark, but high wind readings during both races will prevent them from counting for national consideration. The Tigers also had a pair of provisional performances in the pole vault competition from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5931">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5935">Jacob Clark</a>. 🏃‍♂️ Tiger men post strong marks at home meet

HAYS, Kan. - The 17th-ranked Fort Hays State women's track and field team made quite a showing at its lone home meet of the season, posting six provisional performances, breaking two school records and winning seven events at the Alex Francis Classic on Friday (April 30). After breaking the 100m record last week in Pittsburg,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5966">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;smashed FHSU's 200m dash record this week with a time of 23.71 to place first in the race. The time was .24 seconds faster than the old record set seven years ago. The sophomore now sits in third on the NCAA Division II provisional chart in addition to topping the 100m dash list.  </figure>HAYS, Kan. - The 17th-ranked Fort Hays State women's track and field team made quite a showing at its lone home meet of the season, posting six provisional performances, breaking two school records and winning seven events at the Alex Francis Classic on Friday (April 30). After breaking the 100m record last week in Pittsburg,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5966">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;smashed FHSU's 200m dash record this week with a time of 23.71 to place first in the race. The time was .24 seconds faster than the old record set seven years ago. The sophomore now sits in third on the NCAA Division II provisional chart in addition to topping the 100m dash list. 🏃‍♀️ Women's record fall at Alex Francis Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas has hired Buffalo's Lance Leipold as its next football coach. 

The Jayhawks are turning over one of college football's worst programs to a longtime Division III coach with Midwestern roots. 

Leipold signed a six-year contract and takes over for Les Miles. Miles, who won a title at LSU, parted with the Jayhawks after two losing seasons amid allegations of sexual harassment dating to his time with the Tigers. 

Leipold won six Division III national titles in eight seasons before going to the Bulls, where he was 37-33 the past six years.
