PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls basketball sweep swept the Mid-Continent League tournament titles on Saturday afternoon in Plainville. The girls knocked of seventh ranked Phillipsburg while the TMP boys beat eighth ranked Trego.

Girls: TMP 52, Phillipsburg 46
The TMP girls used a 20-10 first half run and then held off a late Phillipsburg rally to claim their first MCL tournament title since 2018 with a 52-46 win over the Panthers.

The first three field goals of the game were three pointers that gave Phillipsburg a 6-3 lead. TMP (9-2, 5-0 MCL) answered back with a 23-6 run to go up double-digits midway through the second quarter at 26-12.

Sophia Balthazor scored nine first-half points on three three-point field goals. Jaci VonLintel added 10 of her team-high 20 points in the first half.

TMP led 28-16 at halftime.

The Monarchs built a 14-point lead twice in the early moments of the third quarter. The final time at 35-21 on a VonLintel three-pointer.

Phillipsburg (9-3, 6-0 MCL) answered wit ha 20-7 run to end the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter to pull within one at 42-41.

The Panthers were then able to tie the game at 45 but TMP finished the game on a 7-1 run to secure the 52-46 victory.

A night after scoring 22 points in the MCL semifinals Jaci VonLintel led TMP with 20 points and seven rebounds. Sophia Balthazor added 13 points.

Boys: TMP 47, Trego 34
It took the TMP Monarchs (8-2, 4-0) and the Trego Golden Eagles (10-1, 3-0 MCL) a little bit to find their offense in the final game of the night and when they did TMP proved to be too much for the seventh ranked Eagles in a 47-34 victory.

The game was tied at two for the first six minutes until the Monarchs’ Kenton Ginther knocked down a three-pointer that sparked a 20-10 run to end the first quarter and into the second quarter putting TMP up 22-12 at halftime.

Trego was able to trim the TMP lead back to eight at 27-19 but Bryce Seib connected on his first three-pointer of the game putting TMP back up double-figures at 30-19.

Trego was able to close within six late in the third quarter but TMP again had the answer. This Time Gavin Unrein and Dylan Werth scored four straight to put TMP up 37-27 at the end of three quarters.

After scoring the final two points of the third quarter Werth scored the first five of the first quarter helping TMP build a 15-point fourth quarter lead.

TMP went on to the 47-34 win clinching their second MCL tournament title in three years.

Dylan Werth scored a season-high 20 points and Jace Wenting pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
