The second-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team looks to shake off a rare loss Saturday (Jan. 22) when the Tigers host Pittsburg State beginning at 2 p.m. Both the Tigers (15-2, 9-2) and the Gorillas (11-6, 6-5 MIAA) are looking to avoid 0-2 weekends after each team suffered a defeat on Thursday.
The Tigers rarely lose at home, but when they do they typically bounce back in their next outing. FHSU has not lost consecutive home games in more than 11 years (January 2011). The Tigers are 183-29 at home under head coach Tony Hobson, including a sparkling 142-12 record inside the Coliseum over the last 10 seasons. A win Saturday would give the Tigers double-digit home wins for the 12th season in a row.
Fort Hays State continues to lead the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.45, while Jaden Hobbs tops all players in Division II with a ratio of 4.00. Hobbs has had success against the Gorillas in the past, nearly averaging a double-double with 15.7 points per game and 8.0 assists per game in three games against PSU.
Katie Wagner grabbed a career-best 16 rebounds on Thursday, the most by a Tiger in more than two years (Belle Barbieri, 16 vs Concordia-St. Paul, 11/9/19).
The Tigers are 33-27 all-time against Pittsburg State, including a 19-10 edge in games played in Hays. Fort Hays State has won eight in a row against the Gorillas, the longest winning streak by either team in series history. FHSU has won six straight at home. The Tigers are 12-13 against the Gorillas under Hobson, including a 7-4 mark in Hays.
The Gorillas are 2-4 in true road games this season. Pittsburg State leads the MIAA and ranks 11th in Division II with a 3-point field goal percentage of 36.8 percent. The Gorillas average 7.7 made 3-pointers per game, 3rd-most in the league. The Gorillas rank second in the league with an overall field-goal shooting percentage of 45.0 percent. Tristan Gegg averages 16.9 points per game, sixth-most in the MIAA. She leads the league with 42 made 3-pointers this season.
