straight Friday with an 11-0 win at Nickerson. The Indians improve to 13-2 on the

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Fort Hays State Softball saw its 2021 season come to a close on Friday in the MIAA Tournament Best-of-3 series against Rogers State. The Hillcats won both game one and two on Friday to clinch a spot in next weekend's final four of the MIAA Tournament in Edmond, Oklahoma. RSU won game one 3-2 on a walk-off home run in the second extra inning, then held on in the nightcap 4-1. Fort Hays State closed its season at 24-22, finishing with a winning mark for the second straight year.

Game 1: Rogers State 3, Fort Hays State 2 (9 inning) Fort Hays State put together a 2-out rally in the sixth inning of the first contest to eventually force extra innings. The Tigers could not capitalize on their leadoff batter reaching second to start the ninth inning on a fielding error and then Elexis Watson provided a walk-off home run down the left field line in the bottom half of the inning to give Rogers State the win.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Following a leadoff walk by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5882">Katie Adler</a>&nbsp;at the start of the game, MIAA Pitcher of the Year Andrea Morales of Rogers State was unhittable for nearly six innings. She retired 17 straight Tigers following Adler reaching base and, in the meantime, Rogers State built a 2-0 lead. Watson gave the Hillcats their first run of the game in the second inning with an RBI double to the right-center gap and then Jaylan Gibson hit a solo homer in the fifth. 🥎 Tigers season ends with loss to Rogers State in MIAA Tournament

LIBERAL – The Hays High softball team ran their winning
streak to seven games Friday with a doubleheader sweep in Liberal. The Indians
beat the Redskins 1-0 and 12-3 to move to 12-5 on the season.

The Indians scored the only run in game one on an error on a
fly ball off the bat of Lakyn Zimemrman scoring Madyson Sennett. 

Aubree Thomas worked around a one-out error to strikeout the
final two Liberal batters and preserve the win.

Hays scored four in the top of the first in game two, then
after Liberal rallied with three in the third to pull within a run, the Indians
scored single runs in the fourth and fifth then used a six-run seventh to blow
the game open.

Lakym Zimmerman, Ashlyn Zimmer and Raegan Winter all had
three of the Indians 17 hits. S Fagan drove in three runs. Zimmer, Brenna
Schwien and Madyson Sennett all drove in two runs.

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State head women's basketball coach Tohy Hobson&nbsp;has announced the signing of Lauren West, a Division I transfer from Missouri-Kansas City. West will join the Tigers as a redshirt-sophomore in the fall of 2021. West, a highly-touted recruit out of Millard North High School in Omaha, Neb., appeared in 30 games over the last two seasons with the Roos. She scored 64 points with UMKC, including a career-high 10 points earlier this season at Western Illinois (1/15/21). The 5-11 guard hit 13 shots from behind the 3-point line and poked away 11 steals over the last two years. West was one of the top recruits coming out of the state of Nebraska in 2019, earning numerous All-State honors in her time as a Mustang. She helped Millard North win the Nebraska Class A title in 2019, totaling 31 points and 13 rebounds in the state title game and&nbsp;her final high school contest. The Mustangs also reached the state tournament in her junior season (2018). West averaged 14.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game as a senior while hitting 42 percent from behind the arc. West earned first team All-Super State honors from&nbsp;The Lincoln Journal Star&nbsp;after her senior season and was a second team All-USA Nebraska Girls Basketball selection by the&nbsp;USA TODAY. She also earned all-state honors as a sophomore and junior in addition to multiple All-Metro honors from the&nbsp;Omaha World-Herald. She also earned multiple Academic All-State honors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

SALINA – The Hays High boys track and field team finished second
and the girls eighth at Friday’s Salina Central Invitational at Salina Stadium.
The Indian boys scored 91 points and finished six behind first place Buhler.

ELLSWORTH – TMP’s Jackson Schulte finished fourth at the
Ellsworth Invitational Thursday with a 16 over 86. Schulte was five shots back
of first place. 

Pake Dewey finished seventh for TMP with a 92.

Russell’s Cole Birky was second with a 13-over 83.

Ellsworth won the team title at a 366 team score. Hoisington
was second (374) and Larned finished third (381).

undefeated Western Athletic Conference championship Thursday in at 3-0 win over

The win is the Indians 11th in-a-row and they
finished 8-0 in the WAC and are 12-2 on the season.

They travel to Nickerson to close out the regular season Friday.

GOODLAND – The TMP baseball team earned a split doubleheader
at Goodland on Thursday. 

Goodland took an early 3-0 lead in game one on their way to
a 5-1 win.

TMP’s Jace Wentling and Mark Rack each collected a pair of
hits.

Caden Morgan allowed five runs, four earned, with five
strikeouts and three walks in six innings. 

The Monarchs bats came alive in game two as they win a wild
one 19-13.

Goodland scored two runs in the first and five more in the
second inning taking a seven-run lead into the second and they built an 11-2
run through four innings.

The Monarchs bats would come alive in the top of the inning
scoring 11 runs to take a 13-11 lead. . Those 11 runs are more than TMP scored
in their seven previous games combined.

Mason Davison drove in a pair of runs with an RBI double to
start the inning. Nick Helget added a second two-run double of the inning
cutting the deficit to five runs.

TMP scored a run on a walk with the bases loaded and followed
that with runs on back-to-back wild pitches tying the game at 11.

Davison’s second RBI double of the inning broke the tie and
gave TMP the 12-11 lead. The Monarchs added one more run on a wild pitch to
take a 13-11 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

Jace Wentling’s sixth inning triple plated a pair of runs to
make it 15-11.

After Goodland scored two runs in their half of the sixth
TMP added four more in the seventh for the 19-13 win.

Bryce Conner and Nick Helget each drove in a run with an RBI
single. Conner scored on an error to give TMP the 19-13 lead.

Nicholas Herrman got the win in relief. He allowed six
unearned runs with four strikeouts and three walks in five and two-third
innings.

TMP is 8-8 ahead of a matchup with Garden City on Tuesday.

Hays softball hosted Colby on a beautiful Thursday at the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex.&nbsp;

Hays High took advantage of seven Colby errors to take game one of the doubleheader 10-6. Hays scored in all but one inning. The only time the Indians didn't score was in the fifth when Colby turned a triple play.

Hays led 3-0 after two innings when Brenna Schwien clubbed the team's first home run of the year for a 4-0 advantage. It was the first career homer for Schwien and one of three extra base hits in the game for the junior.

Colby made a charge in the fifth inning with a pair of home runs to pull with in five at 9-4. Hays added a run in the sixth inning for a 10-4 lead. Colby threatened in the seventh when four of their first five batter reached scoring two runs. Freshman pitcher Aubree Thomas brought the game to a close with back to back strike outs to close out the game.&nbsp;

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Albert Pujols has been designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels, abruptly ending the 41-year-old superstar slugger’s decade with his second major league team. 

Pujols is fifth in major league history with 667 career homers, and he is 13th in major league history with 3,253 hits.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Josh Naylor homered in the ninth inning, sending the Cleveland Indians to a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Naylor greeted Wade Davis (0-1) with a leadoff drive to right for his second homer. Nick Wittgren (2-1) struck out the side in the eighth for the win, and James Karinchak worked the ninth for his third save.

“I was trying to be patient for something over the heart of the plate,” Naylor said. “I knew I could set the tone for the inning, whether it was a hit or a walk. Thankfully I was able to put one out.”

Cleveland trailed 4-0 after five innings. It has rallied to win in the first three games of the four-game set.

“You just keep playing, and you play through frustration,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. “This is a hard way to win, and I don’t know if we want to draw this up all the time."

Royals manager Mike Matheny had a different perspective.

“That one hurts more than maybe any other one this year,” Matheny said. “They all hurt. They’re all the same as far as the effort we give. But some losses just seem to sting worse than others, all things considered. We get a good pitcher on the ropes and have a lead.

“We’ve been very accustomed to putting those away. We’ve served on the other side that they did, being able to keep coming back. But it didn’t turn out the way we needed.”

Indians ace Shane Bieber allowed four runs, three earned, and nine hits in six innings. He struck out nine to extend his major league record to 19 straight games with at least eight Ks.

“We made some mistakes behind him that didn’t help,” Francona said. “Still, he had six innings and three earnies, with a bunch of strikeouts.”

Kansas City right-hander Brady Singer permitted three runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Royals jumped in front on Hunter Dozier’s fifth homer, a 430-foot solo drive to left-center in the second. Dozier’s last seven hits, and 10 of 11 overall, have been for extra bases.

Kansas City added an unearned run in the fourth when Ryan O’Hearn scored on shortstop Andrés Giménez’s throwing error. Jorge Soler made it 4-0 with a two-run double in the fifth.

The Indians finally got to Singer for three runs in the sixth. Singer walked Jake Bauers and hit José Ramírez with a pitch before Eddie Rosario laced a two-run double to left-center. Singer then walked Franmil Reyes and committed a balk.

Matheny and pitching coach Cal Eldred then argued with home plate umpire Angel Hernandez, leading to their ejections.

Naylor’s run-scoring groundout ended Singer’s night. On the way to the dugout, Singer yelled at Hernandez and was ejected.

“He pitches with emotion all the time,” Matheny said of Singer. “That’s part of what makes him as good as he is.”

Ramírez’s solo drive in the eighth tied it at 4. In his last 45 games, Ramirez is batting .438 (21 of 48) with 8 homers and 17 RBIs from the seventh inning on.

Indians Rosario returned to the lineup after leaving Monday’s game with soreness in his left knee.

Royals RHP Kyle Zimmer (left trapezius strain) is improving, but he still doesn’t have full range of motion after his shoulder muscle locked up on him last week. The Royals won’t have him throw until he has full range.

Indians catcher Roberto Pérez was placed on the 10-day injured list with a fractured right ring finger. Perez was injured back on April 13 when he was crossed up on a pitch from Karinchak. His batting average has dropped from .238 to .131 since the injury. The Indians promoted catcher René Rivera from Triple-A Columbus and designated outfielder Ben Gamel for assignment.

Brasser turned in an overall score of 17-over 233 across three rounds on the par-72, 5,921-yard course. After waiting out a more than four hour rain delay on Monday, Brasser posted an opening-round 4-over 76 to sit in a tie for ninth after day one. The Andale, Kan. native recorded a pair of birdies over her first eight holes of the tournament while finishing off the opening round with 10 pars and eight bogeys. She dipped three spots to 12th on day two after a round of 8-over 80, including one birdie on the 17th hole of the day. Brasser wrapped up the event with a 5-over 77 in round three, including playing the first nine holes on the final day at even par. Brasser was one of the more consistent golfers in the field all week, recording 33 pars across 54 holes, sixth-most in the field. She played the par-fives in even par on the week, the third-best scoring average on those holes in the field. It was the best postseason finish for a Tiger since 2017. She was just the third Tiger to qualify for regional competition and the first to do so as a freshman. Brasser&nbsp;finished fifth amongst the 22 MIAA golfers in the field. She&nbsp;finishes her freshman season with a stroke average of 79.50 over 18 competitive rounds. ⛳ FHSU's Brasser places 12th at Regional Championships

The Hays Larks have 26 home dates on their 2021 schedule. The Larks, who are celebrating their 75th anniversary, open at home with a three-game series against the Colorado Roughnecks June 4-6.&nbsp;

Following a four-game road trip to Colorado, the Larks return home June 16 against the Kansas Cannons to open a nine-game home stand.

Their first six games of July are on the road. They then play their final 14 games of the month at home.

Among the highlights is the 75th anniversary weekend 18, 19 and 20. Larkstoberfest will take place June 26th. First Responders Night is July 16 and Military Night is July 17.

⚾ Hays Larks release 2021 schedule

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;Michaelanne Nelson and&nbsp;Sara Breckbill of Fort Hays State received selections to the 2021 All-MIAA softball team, released on Wednesday. Nelson earned second-team honors in the pitching circle, while Breckbill received an honorable mention selection at utility/non-pitcher. This is the first All-MIAA selection for Nelson who has put together another strong season in the pitching circle for the Tigers. She ranks second in the MIAA in strikeouts with 128 and she leads the conference in strikeouts looking with 46. Nelson owns the third-best ERA in the conference for pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched at 2.12. She ranks fourth in complete games with 15, which includes two shutouts and a combined shutout where she threw three innings and picked up her only save of the season. She owns an 11-11 record for the season, but navigated several high-stress innings as the Tigers scored just 3.1 runs per game in her 13 conference starts and she allowed one earned run or less in seven of those conference starts. Though the MIAA did not have an all-conference team in softball in 2020 with the cancelation of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nelson also had a strong year in 2020 season when she posted a 1.81 ERA. Since the beginning of the 2020 season, Nelson has put together a 2.00 ERA in 209.2 innings pitched with 214 strikeouts and 6 individual shutouts. Breckbill receives the third All-MIAA selection of her career and this is the second time she has been recognized in the utility/non-pitcher category. In 2019, she was a second-team selection at catcher and the year prior she was a first-team selection at utility/non-pitcher. Breckbill leads the team in batting average (.341), hits (45), doubles (11), RBIs (27), and on-base percentage (.425) entering the MIAA Tournament. CITY – The Hays High boys tennis team tied for third at the Western Athletic
Conference meet Tuesday. The Indians scored four points and tied with Great
Bend and Liberal. Garden City won the team title with 15 points. Dodge City
finished second with 13 points.

Garden
City’s Logan Morren was the WAC Player of the Year and the Buffs Logan Bevis
was named WAC Coach of the Year.

The
Indians No. 1 Doubles team of Henry Fitzthum and Ryan Shuckman went 2-2 and finished
third. They lost 8-3 to Bryce Moore and Chris Velez of Dodge City and 8-7 (5)
to Garden City’s Charles Stillian and Abraham Hernadez. They beat Malaki Wasson
and Shiv Tushal of Great Bend 8-2 then 8-6 over Hudson Brown and Cristobal
Sanchez of Liberal.

Colin
Clark went 1-3 at No. 2 singles and finished fourth. He beat Jordan Manning of
Great Bend 8-2. His losses were 8-5 to Conner Stukenholtz of Dodge City, 8-5 to
Colin Kleysteuber of Garden City and 8-4 to Liberal’s Ivan Armendariz.

The

🎾 HHS boys tie for third at WAC meet

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Harold Ramirez hit a tie-breaking double in the eighth, pinch-hitter Jake Bauers added a two-run homer later in the inning and the Cleveland Indians rallied from a three-run deficit to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Tuesday night.

Strong bullpen work by Nick Sandlin, Nick Wittgren (1-1) and Cal Quantrill blanked the Royals over the final four innings as the Indians improved to 14-1 when scoring at least four runs. They are 1-12 when scoring fewer.

“We have good team chemistry here,” Bauers said, “and it's coming together in late innings and securing wins with our bats, and that's awesome to see.”

Royals reliever Josh Staumont (0-1) walked Franmil Reyes in the eighth before Ramirez guided a pitch just inside the foul line for the go-ahead run. Josh Naylor followed with an RBI single, and Bauers capped the inning in style.

“They're bringing in some pretty good arms out of the 'pen,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “We put a couple things together but whenever we did, it got squelched.”

Salvador Perez provided the biggest highlight for Kansas City, hitting a home run estimated at 460 feet into the fountains.

The Royals led 1-0 in the third when they scored on a bizarre sequence of events.

With runners on second and third, Perez hit a high fly to the warning track that missed the gloves of the converging outfielders. Naylor caught the carom off the track and crew chief Angel Hernandez appeared to call Perez out as if it was a flyout. Amid the confusion, one baserunner kept going and the other retreated.

The umpires eventually convened and awarded Perez an RBI single while putting the second runner on third, even though both of them — speedy Whit Merrifield and Andrew Benintendi — probably would have scored on the play.

“I told Angel, ‘Why does it always happen when you’re here?'” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “It was aggravating, but I didn't think there was anything we could do. Believe me, I was thinking about it. We knew it wasn't a catch. Everybody knew it but Angel.”

Hernandez also had an easy safe-out call at first base overturned upon review.

Perez gave the Royals a 3-0 lead with his home run in the fifth before the Indians began their comeback in the sixth.

Royals starter Mike Minor loaded the bases before Greg Holland came on in relief. He gave up a grounder that shortstop Nicky Lopez booted for an error, allowing two runs to score, and Ramirez followed with a tying single.

“They keep playing, which we stress that so much,” Francona said. “We know there's going to be frustration. There has been. But keep playing. If you keep playing it gets fun.”

The Royals signed SS Alcides Escobar, a member of their 2015 title team, to a minor league contract and sent him to Triple-A Omaha. The 34-year-old Escobar last played in the majors in 2018 with Kansas City. He played on minor league deals for the Orioles and White Sox in 2019 and spent last year with the Yakult Swallows in Japan.

“My message to everybody that has a passion for this game is make them pry your spikes off your feet,” Matheny said. “If you love it, you play it until you've exhausted every potential opportunity out there.”

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs got a pair of solid pitching
performances, and the defense to back it up, and the bats stepped up as they swept
Plainville/Stockton in a doubleheader Tuesday in Hays.

Game 1: TMP 5, Plainville/Stockton 1 In game one TMP senior Kyleigh Allen drove in three runs and
allowed just one unearned run in the complete game victory.

Plainville/Stockton got their only run of the game with two
outs in the fourth inning. Allen struck out the first two hitters of the inning
but the committed a throwing error on a throw to first that allowed a runner to
reach. Two batters later the runner came in to score the games first run on a
throwing error by catcher Sophia Coulter.

Allen was able to get the final out on a strikeout with Plainville/Stockton
leading 1-0.

TMP got the run back in the bottom of the fourth inning on Hannah
Garcia sac fly that scored Emilee Augustine. Augustine led off the inning with
a double.

With two out in the inning Allen broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI
infield single as TMP built a 2-1 lead through four innings. 

The Monarchs added three more insurance runs in the bottom
of the sixth inning.

With two outs in the inning Allen drove in two more runs
with a single to center field to TMP up 4-1. 

They added a fifth run when Allen scored on an error to make
it 5-1.

Allen collected three of TMP’s seven hits and drove in three
runs. 

She also picked up the win in the circle. She allowed one unearned
run on two hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. 

Game 2: TMP 14, Plainville/Stockton 3 The Monarchs used a pair big innings in game two and sophomore
Alexa Ryersee got her first career win.

Plainville/Stockton’s Brylee Horting opened the game with a double
off Ryersee and then scored on a sacrifice fly as the Cardinals took a 1-0
lead. 

TMP got the run back in the bottom of the first inning when Kyleigh Allen scored on a dropped third strike with the bases loaded.

With the game tied at one the Monarchs broke the game wide
out in the bottom of the third inning.

Sophia Coulter got the scoring started in the inning with an
RBI single. 

Then with one out in the inning TMP drew three straight walks,
the last one with the bases loaded as Sophia Allen drove in a run. A Kyleigh Allen
RBI groundout made it 4-1 TMP and then two batters later Jaci VonLintel cleared
the bases with a three-run double to put TMP up 7-1.

After TMP sent 10 to the plate in the bottom of the third the
Monarchs send 12 to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning as they
scratched across seven runs to build a 14-2 lead. 

In the inning Sophia Allen and Kyleigh Allen each singled in
a run. They both came in to score on an error putting TMP up 11-2. VonLintel, Coulter
and Hannah Garcia added RBI singles to cap off the seven-run inning as the Monarchs
when on to the 14-3 win in five innings.

VonLintel finished 2-for-4 with four RBI’s, Coulter added
three RBI’s and Kyleigh and Sophia Allen both drove in a pair of runs.

Alexa Ryersee allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts
and three walks in five innings. Ryersee earned her first career win.

TMP improves to 8-6 with the doubleheader sweep. They are
4-0 in the MCL.
