HAYS - The Hays High girls’ soccer team ran their win streak to nine matches Thursday with a 4-0 win at TMP-Marian. 

Caroline Robben and Katie Dinkel both scored in the first half as the Indians built a 2-0 halftime lead. Madelyn Martin scored in the second half.

HHS is now 10-2 on the season. TMP-Marian dropped to 7-5.

Jaren Kanek brought home four gold medals to lead the HHS boys, winning the 100, 200, long jump and
he was the anchor leg of the&nbsp; winning 4x100 relay. Jordan Dale went 6’3” and won the
high jump. Bryce Salmans finished first in the javelin and Roy Moroni won the
110 high hurdles and was the lead leg in the 4x100 relay.

Re Green won three gold medals taking the long
jump and triple jump. She was also the anchor leg in the winning 4x100 relay.
Brenlynn Albers finished first in the 3200.

by five points to win the team title. TMP-Marian finished fourth. Plainville

SALINA - The Hays High softball
team went 2-0 in Salina Thursday. The Indians beat TMP-Marian 12-2 then knocked off the
host Sacred Heart Knights 4-2. 

The Indians (8-5) broke open a one-run game with the Monarchs by scoring three in the fifth then six in the sixth. Brenna Schwien drove in three runs, Sydney
Fagan and Madyson Sennett both had two RBIs. 

The Indians were down 2-0 after
one inning against Sacred Heart, but tied it in the second, scoring twice on an error. They took the lead for good with two runs in the third on a Schwien single. 

Aubree Thomas picked up the win in
both games, allowing one earned run on the day.

The Monarchs (5-5) lost their first game with Sacred Heart 9-8. TMP led 3-0 in the first then scored five runs in the top of the sixth to build an 8-4 lead but the Knights rallied with four runs in the bottom of the
sixth to tie the game then took advantage of an error followed by a single in the seventh for the walkoff win. 

The Monarchs committed nine errors in the game which resulted in eight unearned runs.

Emilee Augustine had
three hits, two of them doubles, and drove in two runs.

Colin Clark went 2-2 and finished third in No. 1 Singles. The No. 1 Doubles team of Henry Fitzthum and Logan Daniels went 2-2 and finished third. 

Xavier Catura also went 2-2 and finished third in No. 2 Singles. The No. 2 Doubles team of Ryan Schuckman and Jack Scoby went 2-2 and finished fourth.

🎾 Indian boys finish third in Abilene

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Football is in cornerback Pat Surtain II's blood.

His father and namesake was a Pro Bowl cornerback who played 11 seasons with Miami and Kansas City before coaching his son at American Heritage High School in Florida.

“I learned a lot from him,” the younger Surtain said Thursday night after the Denver Broncos made him a surprise selection with the ninth overall pick in the NFL draft.

“Gaining his insight and perspective on things has helped me a lot on the field," Surtain said. "His game translates a lot into my game. Learning from him and having him teach me his techniques helped shape me up for the next level.”

Asked about people saying he's already better than his dad, Surtain said, "I don’t try to be too cocky because he did his thing, and I still have to reach him. I’ve got to reach that steppingstone. This is just the start for me.”

The younger Surtain, who starred at Alabama, has already bested his father, who played at Southern Miss, in one big category: his dad was selected 44th overall in the second round by the Dolphins in 1998.

The Broncos were widely expected to pick a quarterback in the first round for just the fifth time in history, but they were able to grab the best defender on the board instead because of general manager George Paton's trade for veteran QB&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/carolina-panthers-denver-broncos-teddy-bridgewater-nfl-sports-c11b3b39ac17be3284174fcc988c0197">Teddy Bridgewater</a>&nbsp;24 hours earlier.

After sending a 2021 sixth-round pick to Carolina for Bridgewater, who will compete with incumbent Drew Lock for the starting job, Paton bypassed quarterbacks Justin Fields and Mac Jones in Round 1.

Fields went two picks later to Chicago and Jones, Surtain's teammate at Alabama, was chosen 15th overall by New England.

“We're happy with the two quarterbacks we have here,” Paton said. “Drew's been working hard every day and Teddy's going to bring some experience to the room, some leadership. So, we're really excited for both quarterbacks.

“We're always looking at every position and quarterback's another one, but we like the two we have."

Paton, the former assistant GM in Minnesota, is familiar with Bridgewater, whom the Vikings selected with the 32nd overall pick in the 2014 draft.

The Panthers, who are paying $7 million of the $10 million Bridgewater is due in 2021, are restructuring his deal to facilitate the trade that is expected to be finalized by Saturday.

Since succeeding John Elway in January, Paton has focused on rebuilding Denver’s paper-thin secondary.

He signed cornerbacks Kyle Fuller and Ronald Darby in free agency to go with Bryce Callahan and Michael Ojemudia and he re-signed safeties Kareem Jackson and Justin Simmons.

“I will benefit a lot learning from those guys," said Surtain, who is the second consecutive Alabama alum selected by Denver in the first round, following wide receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/jerryjeudy/status/1387942541677547522?s=20">Jerry Jeudy</a>&nbsp;at No. 15 last year.

Broncos fans may not like Denver bypassing a QB, especially after speculation they were in the middle of the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes given the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-mark-murphy-aaron-rodgers-football-green-bay-packers-b749d21a65a197a66263ea9143a865bc">reigning MVP's unhappiness</a>&nbsp;with the Packers.

Paton declined to say whether he had discussions with Green Bay about Rodgers: “You know, we're just going to focus on the draft right now and focus on Patrick Surtain and what a great player he is and we're excited to have him here.”

Paton said three or four teams wanted to trade up to No. 9 but “it would have taken a haul to pass up Patrick Surtain.”

The Broncos have foundered under center ever since Peyton Manning retired a month after winning Super Bowl 50, churning through more quarterbacks than any team in the league over the last five years.

The failures include first-round bust Paxton Lynch, trade duds Mark Sanchez and Joe Flacco and free agent flop Case Keenum.

Instead of getting a QB to catch up with the likes of the AFC West's quarterbacks, they got a cornerback who can help contain those prolific passers.

“I'm trying to be known as one of the best in the game," said Surtain, who will get the chance to do just that by facing Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Derek Carr twice a year.

🥎 Tigers eye hosting opening-round of MIAA Tourney in final week

After months of working with state government, education and health leaders, schools in all 50 states have been given the go-ahead to resume high school sports at some level of competition. Schools in the District of Columbia were the last to receive the green light on April 1. This is great news and signals that a return to normalcy may be on the horizon by the time schools begin sports and activities this fall.

Unfortunately, there is an ever-increasing issue that could put a kink in the return-to-play plans across the country – a shortage of officials, as in referees and umpires, that borders on catastrophic in some sports and in some parts of the nation.

The shortage of officials in high school – and middle school – sports has been a growing concern for several years; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has moved the issue to heightened levels.

In some cases, schools that have waited months and months to “play ball” have had to cancel games or reschedule games. There are so many contests occurring, with some states currently playing football and other sports they were unable to offer last fall, coupled with regular spring sports now underway, there simply are not enough people to officiate all scheduled games.

According to the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO), registration of officials across the country is down about 30 percent this year. In Oregon, the number of football referees has dropped 34 percent compared to last year, and volleyball is down 45 percent. In a football officials association in California, nearly two-thirds of its members opted out of officiating this year.

Tennessee and Georgia have reported declines in baseball umpires. In one county in Georgia, one middle school had to cancel its baseball season due to a lack of umpires.

In some cases, the number of available officials has declined due to health-related reasons – people opting out this year because of the pandemic. As vaccinations increase and the optics improve, many of these individuals hopefully will return.

For other officials, however, the pandemic was a secondary concern compared to the verbal abuse they receive from fans – mostly parents. It is particularly hard for rookie officials to overcome the verbal shots they hear from parents. In an article in the Salt Lake City Deseret News, Jeff Cluff, assistant director in charge of officials for the UHSAA, had the following to say about unruly fans in his state:

“Parents are out of control . . . Because of the club and super-league culture, they think these games mean everything; we don’t look at it that way in high school. Kids are learning, the officials are learning, the coaches are learning. We have lots of people who are interested in officiating. If we could keep these officials, we’d be fine.”

Schools across the country need two things: 1) more individuals to consider officiating high school sports and 2) an improvement in fan behavior so that officials don’t have to deal with verbal abuse and can feel good about continuing to officiate. Despite the fun and rewards that come with officiating high school sports, no one wants to continue if they are continually berated by fans.

The NFHS has been actively recruiting officials for four years through its #BecomeAnOfficial campaign. More than 50,000 individuals have expressed interest in officiating during this time. However, more individuals are desperately needed to keep the games going for the millions of students in middle school and high school sports. Equally important, let’s do all we can to keep the men and women who are currently giving of their time to officiate middle school and high school sports. The next time you think about yelling at the referee during a high school contest, DON’T!

More officials, better fan behavior needed in high school sports

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jorge Soler had two doubles among his three hits and drove in three runs to lead Kansas City over the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-6 on Wednesday night and improve the Royals’ record to a major league-best 15-8.

Soler’s doubles sparked three-run rallies in the first and sixth innings, the latter stretching the lead to 9-5. He came into the game hitting .186 with eight RBI.

“I’m trying to do this every day, as long as I’m up to bat,” Soler said. “Today I hit a couple of balls hard the other way and they fell in. Today was a good day.”

Kansas City won for the sixth time in seven games.

Salvador Pérez also had three of Kansas City’s 12 hits. Hunter Dozier hit a two-run triple and Andrew Benintendi added a two-run double.

Dozier was hitting .129 prior to Wednesday and Benintendi’s batting average was .227.

“The top of the order has been carrying us at times and the bottom third did a nice job early on (in the season),” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “It was the middle third that really came through this time. We saw it coming and Soler, Benintendi and Dozier all put together good at-bats.”

Erik Gonzalez and Jacob Stallings hit back-to-back home runs for the Pirates, who had won three in a row.

Staked to a 6-0 lead, Kansas City starter Mike Minor lasted just 4⅓ innings and gave up five runs — four earned — six hits and three walks.

“Pretty short, not great,” Minor said of his outing. “We got the early lead, the offense did its job, the defense was making plays behind me and I couldn’t do anything for them.”

Kyle Zimmer (2-0) got the last two outs of the fifth, and Josh Staumont retired four straight batters for his third save.

Mitch Keller (1-3) walked five in 2⅓ innings, allowed four runs and needed 83 pitches to get seven outs. Keller has 13 walks in 18⅔ innings over five starts.

For a second week in-a-row former Hays High Indian Palmer Hutchison was named to JCCC's baseball player of the week.

The Kansas City Kansas Community College freshman third baseman hit .571 (12-for-21) this past week with 11 RBI, 3 home runs, a double and a triple.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Reilly Madden and Macy Decker&nbsp;of FHSU Women's Soccer were named to the 2021 Spring All-MIAA Team, released by the conference office on Wednesday (Apr. 28). Each school received two selections to the team for their performances during matches held during the recent spring competitions. Madden was named to the first team and Decker was selected to the second team. Madden and Decker combined for six of Fort Hays State's 13 goals scored in the spring, each with three. Decker also had a nice pair of assists on goals in FHSU's 2-1 MIAA Tournament win at Rogers State. Below are the selections to the 2021 All-MIAA Spring Team. Pittsburgh (12-11) has won three straight games and 11 of 16 since a 1-6 start, moving back above .500 for the first time since it was 1-0 in the opening week.

Kansas City has lost seven straight games in Pittsburgh since 2009. The Royals arrived from Detroit following their first four-game road series sweep since 1999.

Pirates: OF Ka’ai Tom joined the team. He was claimed from Oakland on waivers last week. After being picked from Cleveland in the winter meeting draft of unprotected players, Tom made his major league debut with the Athletics on April 1 and went 1 for 16 (.063) in nine games. INF Rodolfo Castro was optioned to the alternate site.

Royals: C Salvador Pérez was in the lineup a day after being taken out of the game after the top of the sixth inning with a strained right thumb. He was injured while tagging Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera out on a play at home plate in the third inning.

⛳ Monarchs third at Larned Invite

GREAT BEND –
The TMP-Marian Monarchs were held to six singles and dropped both of their
games to Great Bend Tuesday at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The Panthers win
game one 11-0 in five innings then took the second game 6-0.

TMP falls to
7-5 on the season. They are off until Monday when they travel to Salina for a
doubleheader with Sacred Heart.

Game 1: Great Bend 11, TMP-Marian 0 (5

Edwin Chavez held the Monarchs to two hits. Great Bend scored two in the first,
five in the third and four in the fifth.

Cade Morgan and
Nicholas Herrman had the two singles for the Monarchs.

Morgan allowed
nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits with three strikeouts and two walks and took
the loss on the mound.

🏀 Hammeke signs Letter of Intent with FHSU

LARNED – The TMP-Marian boys and girls track and field teams both finished in first place at the
Larned Invitational Monday. The Monarch girls won nine events and the boys
five events.

Emilee Lane
(800, 4x800 relay), Grace Pope (3200, 4x800 relay), Jadyn Gottschalk (100, 300 hurdles) and Abby Rueschhoff all won
two events for the girls. Carlos Tinoco (100, 200, 4x100 relay) won three gold
