MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Baylor returned from a week-long pause due to COVID-19 concerns and didn’t miss a beat.

MaCio Teague had 23 points and 10 rebounds, Davion Mitchell scored 20 points and No. 2 Baylor beat Kansas State 100-69 on Saturday.

Jared Butler had 14 points and 13 assists for his first career double-double with the Bears (5-0, 1-0 Big 12), and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua scored 13 points.

“Butler is full of brilliance and very efficient,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said. “I think it started on the defensive end and the offensive end followed.”

Antonio Gordon led the Wildcats (3-5, 1-1) with 23 points on 9-of-9 shooting, and Selton Miguel scored 14 points. Gordon is the eighth player in school history to be perfect from the field with at least nine shots attempted.

This was the first game back for Baylor in a week, after the school paused team activity as part of coronavirus protocols.

“There was definitely was an excitement for us to be here and to play again,” Drew said. “Every time you play it’s a joy and a privilege.”

The Bears shot 64% in the first half, including seven 3-pointers, to lead by 29 at the half.

“It’s really hard to guard us, so I wasn’t too surprised,” Mitchell said.

Baylor (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) finished shooting 58% while the Wildcats shot 47%. The Bears made 14 3-pointers while Kansas State connected on six.

“They kicked our butt,” Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. “I knew it would not be easy because they can beat you in so many ways.”

Kansas State turned the ball over 14 times. The Bears scored 21 points off those mistakes. Baylor also dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Wildcats 41-25.

“After the game I told them how special Baylor is,” Weber said. “They do a lot of good things, but we need to learn from it.”

Teague nailed three 3s and scored 12 of the first 15 points for Baylor while Tchamwa Tchatchoua scored 13 points on three alley-oop dunks by halftime.

“His energy really sparked us in the first half,” Drew said. “Making shots helps for the spacing and the execution was really well done.”

Drew said Baylor would try to reschedule a canceled game against No. 1 Gonzaga but that obstacles remained.

“There’s a lot we have to do for that to happen with CBS and league policy,” Drew said. “We hope it’s rescheduled for April in the tournament. I know both us coaches would love to play each other then.”

In the meantime, Baylor is in the process of scheduling another nonconference opponent before the new year.

Baylor: The Bears looked to pick up right where they left off before their pause. If they shoot as well as they did against the Wildcats, they will be a tough team to beat against anyone in the Big 12.

Kansas State: Early turnovers and missed open shots haunted the Wildcats as they got into a big hole. The Wildcats needed to jump out to a fast start to keep up with Baylor.

Baylor: Takes on the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff at 7 pm on Monday at home.

Kansas State: Hosts Jacksonville at 1 pm on the same day.

HAYS, Kan. - Jared Vitztum scored 20 points and freshmen Quinten Rock added a career-high 19 to help lead Fort Hays State to an 81-76 win over Northeastern State Friday night at Gross Coliseum. The Tigers have won two straight by a combined 11 points after losing their first three by a total of eight.

Rock got a steal on the first possession of the game then scored as the Tigers raced out to an early 8-0 lead. The RiverHawks would pull within 12-11 and eventually take a 39-36 lead late in the half.

Bjarni Jonsson's tip-in late in the half tied the game 39-39 at the break.

After a back-and-forth start to the second half, the Tigers went on a 15-3 run to build a 63-52 lead with just over ten minutes to play. Northeastern would crawl back within one on several occasions, the last at 68-67 with 6:29 to play but Alvin Thompson hit a three to push the lead to four.

Thompson scored 15 points and went 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Kalem Hammeke scored nine of his 10 points in the second half and dished out six assists with no turnovers in 38 minutes of play.

The Tigers close out first semester play Sunday at 4:00 pm against Rogers State.

🏀 Tigers hold off Northeastern State for second straight win

STOCKTON – The TMP-Marian Monarchs closed out the 2020
calendar year with a double-headers weep of the Stockton Tigers Friday in
Stockton.

The Lady Monarchs used a quick start and several big runs on
their way to a 71-25 win over the Stockton Tigers.

TMP opened the game on a 14-2 run with Emilee Lane, Jaci
VonLintel and Sophia Balthazor each scored four points during the run to give the
Monarchs an early lead as they cruised to the win.

After leading by 13 through one quarter of action, at 18-5,
the Monarchs led by 15 early in the first quarter. 

Stockton was able to trim the lead back to single digits at
23-16 in the second quarter only to see TMP go on an 18-4 run to end the first
half and take a 41-20 lead into the halftime break.

The Monarchs extended their lead in the third quarter,
outscoring the Tigers 24-0.

VonLintel scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the
quarter and Lane added six in the quarter.

With the continuous clock in the fourth quarter TMP earned
the 71-25 win.

To go along with her game and career-high 19 points VonLintel
collected a career-high eight rounds.

Olivia Dix scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds for
Stockton.

TMP improves to 4-1 and 2-0 in the MCL. Stockton falls to
0-5 and 0-3 in the MCL.

The TMP boys used a 26-6 run to end the first-half and open
the second half as they pulled away for a 67-45 win.

The Monarchs shrugged off a slow start to build a seven
point lead twice in the first quarter, the final time at 15-8 at the end of the
quarter.

The Monarchs built an 11-point lead, at 22-11, early in the
second quarter but Stockton was able to answer right back closing the gap to
two late in the quarter on an 11-4 run. TMP led 26-22 at the halftime break.

In the third quarter Stockton again cut TMP’s lead to two
but TMP put together a 26-6 run ending the third quarter and into the fourth to
grow the lead to 59-37 lead. 

Jackson Schulte scored 10 of his game-high 22 points during
the run and Jace Wentling added six of his 11 points. 

Dylan Werth added 15 for TMP as they improve to 4-1 and 2-0
in the MCL.

Stockton dropped to 1-4 and 0-3 in the MCL.

TMP returns to action at Sacred Heart on Jan. 8.

🏀TMP sweeps Stockton in MCL matchup

A scoreless third quarter cost the Hays High Indians from breaking what is now a 60 regular season game winning streak for the Liberal Redskins. The score was tied twice in the first half and Hays led 17-14 after back to back Re Green three pointers.

The Indians though only scored one point over the next four minutes of the second quarter. Despite the drought the Indians trailed just 26-22 at halftime to the defending WAC champs.&nbsp;

The Indians though never found their offense in the second half scoring just one point in the final sixteen minutes. Liberal made seven second half three pointers and twelve for the game on their way to a 54-23 victory.&nbsp;

Liberal freshman Hailey Contreras scored a career high 22 including five three pointers. Ashley Carrillo added another five threes and 15 points overall.

Hays falls to 1-4 and 0-1 in the WAC. Liberal is 5-0 and 1-0 in the conference.

Hays used a 25-7 second quarter to blow open a one point game with Liberal to move to 5-0 before the Christmas break. The Indians outscored the Redskins 45-17 in the middle two quarters while being tied up 17-17 in the first and fourth quarters.

Liberal buried two early threes to build a 6-2 lead. The game was tied at six and eight points before the Indians took an 11-10 lead with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Neither team scored for the remainder of the frame.

Jace Linenberger had 18 of his game high 20 by halftime building a 36-17 halftime advantage.

The Indians were never threatened in the second half during their defense of the Western Athletic Conference title for the first time this season in the 62-34 victory.

Hays was led by Jace Linenberger scoring 20. Carson Kieffer added 14. The Indians moved to 5-0 on the year and 1-0 in the WAC. Liberal falls to 2-3 and 0-1. The Redkins were led by Embry Williams with 12 points on four three point baskets.

<p><b>Girls</b></p><p>Liberal 54 - Hays 23</p><p>A scoreless third quarter cost the Hays High Indians from breaking what is now a 60 regular season game winning streak for the Liberal Redskins. The score was tied twice in the first half and Hays led 17-14 after back to back Re Green three pointers.</p><p>The Indians though only scored one point over the next four minutes of the second quarter. Despite the drought the Indians trailed just 26-22 at halftime to the defending WAC champs.&nbsp;</p><p>The Indians though never found their offense in the second half scoring just one point in the final sixteen minutes. Liberal made seven second half three pointers and twelve for the game on their way to a 54-23 victory.&nbsp;</p><p>Liberal freshman Hailey Contreras scored a career high 22 including five three pointers. Ashley Carrillo added another five threes and 15 points overall.</p><p>Hays falls to 1-4 and 0-1 in the WAC. Liberal is 5-0 and 1-0 in the conference.</p><p><b>Boys</b></p><p>#6-5A Hays 62 - Liberal 34</p><p>Hays used a 25-7 second quarter to blow open a one point game with Liberal to move to 5-0 before the Christmas break. The Indians outscored the Redskins 45-17 in the middle two quarters while being tied up 17-17 in the first and fourth quarters.</p><p>Liberal buried two early threes to build a 6-2 lead. The game was tied at six and eight points before the Indians took an 11-10 lead with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Neither team scored for the remainder of the frame.</p><p>Jace Linenberger had 18 of his game high 20 by halftime building a 36-17 halftime advantage.</p><p>The Indians were never threatened in the second half during their defense of the Western Athletic Conference title for the first time this season in the 62-34 victory.</p><p>Hays was led by Jace Linenberger scoring 20. Carson Kieffer added 14. The Indians moved to 5-0 on the year and 1-0 in the WAC. Liberal falls to 2-3 and 0-1. The Redkins were led by Embry Williams with 12 points on four three point baskets.</p>

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Ochai Agbaji made the go-ahead layup with 13 seconds left and finished with 23 points as No. 5 Kansas beat No. 14 Texas Tech 58-57 on Thursday night, giving the Jayhawks a win in their conference opener for the 30th season in a row.

Agbaji made four 3-pointers but got the game-winning points for the Jayhawks (7-1, 1-0 Big 12) when he worked inside and took an inbound pass from Marcus Garrett.

Texas Tech (6-2, 0-1) had one more opportunity, but Terrence Shannon Jr., who had 20 points and nine rebounds for the Red Raiders, had his mid-range jumper blocked by Jalen Wilson to end the game.

Garrett had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for Kansas, which has never lost a Big 12 opener, and last lost a conference opener during the 1990-91 season in the old Big Eight Conference. Christian Braun also had 10 rebounds.

Mac McClung led Texas Tech with a season-high 21 points, but didn’t score in the last 11 minutes.

MANHATTAN, Kan<b>.</b>&nbsp;– Led by Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year Deuce Vaughn and First Team All-Big 12 performers Phillip Brooks and Wyatt Hubert, a total of 10 Kansas State football players picked up postseason honors as the Big 12 announced the coaches' All-Big 12 selections on Thursday

Vaughn is the second Wildcat to earn the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year award – joining Tyler Lockett (2011) – and the Round Rock, Texas native was also named a Second Team All-Big 12 running back, the first Wildcat true freshman in the Big 12 era to earn first- or second-team honors on offense from the league’s coaches.

Brooks was the First Team All-Big 12 kick and punt returner, the 14th&nbsp;time in the 25-year existence of the Big 12 – and the seventh time in the last eight years – that a Wildcat was a First Team All-Big 12 returner. Hubert was one of three players in the Big 12 to be a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team, joining Iowa State running back Breece Hall and Texas offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi.

Joining Vaughn on the second team were tight end&nbsp;Briley Moore&nbsp;and offensive lineman&nbsp;Noah Johnson. Place kicker&nbsp;Blake Lynch, defensive back&nbsp;Jahron McPherson, linebacker&nbsp;Elijah Sullivan&nbsp;and defensive tackle&nbsp;<b>Drew Wiley</b>&nbsp;each picked up Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades.

In addition to their placing on various teams, Hubert also earned votes for the Big 12 Defensive Player and Lineman of the Year awards, Johnson for the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year award and Moore for the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year Award. Senior&nbsp;Brock Monty&nbsp;earned votes for the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year award.

Vaughn is one of only two players in the nation to top 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards so far in 2020, joining Clemson senior running back Travis Etienne, and is the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both rushing and receiving yards. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in rushing (64.2 yards per game) and 10th&nbsp;in scoring (5.4 points per game) and is the top freshman in both categories. He also ranks fifth in the nation among freshmen, third in the Big 12 overall and tops among freshmen in the league in all-purpose yards per game (112.1).

In the final regular season game against Texas, Vaughn broke the K-State freshman records for rushing yards (642), all-purpose yards (1,221), yards from scrimmage (1,076) and total touchdowns (9), needing only 10 games to do so.

Brooks totaled 411 return yards this season, including 261 punt-return yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 23.7-yard average on punt returns is tops in school history and would lead the nation if he had the required minimum amount of returns.

A native of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Brooks set the school record with 189 punt-return yards against Kansas and took two punts back for touchdowns, the most by a Big 12 player in a conference game in league history. Additionally, his 47.25-yard average against KU was the highest by any player in the nation with at least four attempts since at least 1996.

Hubert, a product of Topeka, Kansas, earned his second-straight First Team All-Big 12 honor as his 8.5 sacks tied for the Big 12 lead and ranked 25th&nbsp;nationally during the regular season. He also tied for third with 13.0 tackles for loss. His season totals were given a boost when he tallied a career-high 2.5 sacks against Oklahoma State, the most by a Wildcat in a conference game since 2013.

The junior ranks first nationally among non-seniors with 20.0 career sacks, while he is fourth overall among active players with 0.59 career sacks.

People in sports like to talk about how hard work gets a player where they want to go. Most are unwilling or unable to follow through with the commitment that is required. Gaven Haselhorst isn't most people. He is the shining example of where hard work can take a student-athlete.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the 220-pound senior defensive end signed his National Letter of Intent to play football for Kansas State University. The Wildcats offered Haselhorst a scholarship after a superb showing at the Sharp Combine in Salina over the summer. It took the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year little time to make his decision to commit. Haselhorst cites the family atmosphere as a big reason for his decision.

Hays High coach Tony Crough believes that Haselhorst hasn't even began to reach his potentional. Haselhorst is really only about three years into his football career. Track was always the go-to and he never had a natural position on the football field — that was, until his sophomore season. The coaching staff had moved Haselhorst from linebacker to running back without much success. Defensive line coach Mitch Harris told Crough to let him have Haselhorst ... the rest is history.&nbsp;

Haselhorst plastered his name all over conference and state team honors. He most recently was named to the Kansas Football Coaches Association defensive first team in 5A and listed as one of the All Class Top 11. Sports In Kansas also named him as a finalist for 5A Defensive Player of the Year.&nbsp;

As much as the seniors stalky build stood out on signing day his play on the field impressed even more. Haselhorst's #22 jersey was in the backfield as much as some running backs. The numbers backed up his play. He finished second on the team in total tackles with 77. An eye-popping 32 of those were tackles for loss including six sacks, three forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries. Haselhorst finished his high school career with 211 tackles, 10 sacks, 54 tackles for loss, 6 forced fumbles, and 5 fumble recoveries.&nbsp;

By finishing seventh in the Big 12 regular-season standings, the Wildcats were in line to compete in a bowl game.<br><br>“This has been an unbelievably challenging year for everyone, but we were very excited to have the opportunity to end the season in a bowl game,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “But, with new positive cases and additional close contacts in our program, we would not have enough players to continue practices and field a team for the bowl game. I want to thank our student-athletes and coaches for their tireless effort this year and for being flexible during a time when every day presented new challenges.”<br><br>“It certainly is a bittersweet ending to the season, but playing 10 regular-season games throughout all of this uncertainty was nothing short of a miracle,” Head Coach Chris Klieman added. “I want to thank our players, especially our seniors, for continuing to battle each and every day, no matter what circumstance was put before them. This season was difficult and frustrating, but I think it is also one that we will remember for the rest of our lives. AMES, Iowa (AP) — DaJuan Gordon scored 15 points, making all 11 free throws, Kansas State made seven of eight from the line in the last 41 seconds, turning aside a late Iowa State surge 74-65 Tuesday night in a Big 12 Conference opener.

Gordon also grabbed 11 rebounds for his first career double-double as the Wildcats (3-4, 1-0) held a 35-25 edge on the boards.

Kansas State started three true freshman in a Big 12 game for the first time and the trio came through. Davion Bradford scored 14 points, Nijel Pack and Selton Miguel each added eight points with three steals.

As Iowa State stubbornly whittled away at Kansas State’s double-digit lead down the stretch, Pack stole the ball and scored on a fastbreak layup, pushing the lead back to 67-57 with just under two minutes to go.

Rasir Bolton paced the Cyclones (1-3, 0-1) with 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting but turned the ball over seven times. Tyler Harris added 10 points and drained a rare 3-pointer for Iowa State (which was 5 of 20 from distance at the time) to cut the gap to 67-60. Each team then called a timeout to set up for the final 96 seconds.

The teams each had eight steals and Kansas State made 17 turnovers to Iowa State’s 18, but the Wildcats were able to score 24 points off turnovers to Iowa State’s 14.

The Wildcats put together runs of 13-0 and 10-2 to break away for a 40-26 lead at halftime. The 13-0 run midway through the first half featured back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers — two from Carlton Linguard (10 points) and another from Rudi Williams (10).

Aside from that flurry of long-distance shooting, K-State was 4-for-23 from 3-point range.

EDMOND, Okla. - For a second straight game the Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a strong second half to carry them to a win, defeating Central Oklahoma 81-60 Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Tigers (3-0, 3-0 MIAA) led by two at the half but thanks in part to five 3-pointers, pushed the lead to 13 after three quarters. They then scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to build the lead to 23.

FHSU had a couple of eight point leads in the first half but they were held to only three points over the final six and-a-half minutes of the second quarter.

Jaden Hobbs led four Tigers in double-figures with 19 points. The Alva, Oklahoma native went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, dished out four assists and had eight steals which are the most for a Tiger since Ashlee Gustin totaled eight steals in back-to-back games against New Mexico Highlands (12/11/04) and CSU-Pueblo (12/16/04).

Madison Mitte added 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Whitney Randall and Cydney Bergman both scored 11 points.

&nbsp; he Tigers forced 21 turnovers in the game and scored 29 points off of those turnovers, while UCO turned 12 FHSU miscues into just seven points. Fort Hays State was outrebounded for the first time this season, 42-33.<br><br>After hitting 11 shots from deep on Saturday, the Tigers knocked in 13 from behind the arc against the Bronchos, 10 of them came after halftime.&nbsp;

🏀 Strong second half carries Tiger women to win at UCO

Hays took to the road for the first time in the 2020-21 season with a trip to Hoisington.

Hays matched their season average in points and total field goals made in the first half against Hoisington on their way to a 56-32 victory. The Indians trailed just once at 1-0 the rattled off a 10-0 run started by an Ashlyn Flax three point play.&nbsp;

Following the 10-1 lead the game was never closer than eight points rest of the night. Ginny Ke in her first career start dumped in ten first half points on the way to a career high thirteen...her first career varsity points. Ke would hit a three with one minute remaining in the second quarter for a 29-13 halftime lead.&nbsp;

The Indians pushed the lead to as high as 26 late in the third quarter before the Lady Cards made their first big push. Leading 44-18 the Indians watched Hoisington go on a 12-0 run. That run through only cut the lead down to 14 at 44-30. Hays would only allow two points over the final four minutes for the final margin of 56-32.

Hays was led by the double double of Aleyia Ruder with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Ginny Ke scored her first career varsity points and dumped in 13 in the process.

Hays improves to 1-3 and will open Western Athletic Conference play Friday by hosting Liberal. Hoisington falls to 2-3.

<b>#6-5A Hays 64 - #5-3A Hoisington 63</b>

Hays and Hoisington each led in each of the first two quarters in the state ranked show down. Hays entered #6 in 5A while Hoisington came in #5 in 3A. Hoisington had the advantage by halftime using eight of twelve shooting beyond the arc for a 37-31 lead.

The Cardinals broke a nine all time in the first quarter with an 8-0 run. Hays took the lead back early in the second quarter capping a 13-4 run for a 22-21 advantage. Hoisington took the lead back just fifteen seconds later on a three pointer and kept the lead for the rest of the quarter.

Hoisington continued to lead for the entire third quarter and built their lead to a game high nine at 48-39 with thirty seconds left in the quarter. Hays cut the lead down to seven 48-41 before the end of the third and continued to chip away. The Indians tied the game on free throws at 52 and then on a three pointer at 58 with 2:40 remaining.

Neither team would score over the final two plus minutes. Hays struck first in over time and never trailed. Hoisington tied the game at 60 with two minutes left and had the ball back but turned it over on a charge.&nbsp;

Hays had a chance to ice the game from the free throw line and did it in a dramatic way. The Indians made just four of eight free throws over the final thirty seconds. But on misses with nine seconds and six seconds left Jordan Dale and Dalyn Schwartz secured offensive rebounds. Schwarz then gave Hays a 64-60 lead with 3.6 on the clock. The Cardinals banked in a three at the buzzer for a 64-63 victory for Hays.

Carson Kieffer tied a career high with 19. Jason Krannawitter set a career high with 16. Dalyn Schwarz added 12 for the now 4-0 Hays High Indians. Drew Nicholson scored 25 to lead 4-1 Hoisington.

Vitztum helped Fort Hays State to an exhibition win over Kansas State University and then its first regular season win in overtime at Newman, producing double-doubles in both contests.<br><br>Vitztum had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, a team best in both categories, in Fort Hays State's 81-68 exhibition win at Kansas State University on Tuesday (Dec. 8). Since the game counted for K-State, FHSU became the first non-Division I team to defeat a major conference team on the road since 2000. Vitztum led the group of six Tigers to score in double figures against the Wildcats.<br><br>Vitztum recorded his third double-double of the regular season on Saturday (Dec. 12), tying for the MIAA and national lead in the category, in an 81-75 overtime win for Fort Hays State at Newman University.
