PITTSBURG, Kan. – After securing its first MIAA win of the season with a win in game one, Fort Hays State put together a late four-run rally to sweep its doubleheader with Pittsburg State on Friday . The Tigers took game one 5-1, then turned an 8-5 deficit into a 9-8 win with their last-inning rally in game two. FHSU is now 16-17-1 overall on the season and 2-4 in the MIAA, while PSU moved to 21-14 overall, 3-7 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 5, Pittsburg State 1 Fort Hays State jumped out to a 5-0 lead early and&nbsp;Savanah Egger&nbsp;limited the Gorillas to just one run in a complete-game effort in the pitching circle as the Tigers notched their first MIAA win of the season.

Jessica Espinoza&nbsp;reached base to start the game on an error by the Gorillas and a few moments later, she came in to score on a sacrifice bunt by&nbsp;Loren Beggs, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning,&nbsp;Kiana Blake&nbsp;and Espinoza sparked a rally with back-to-back singles.&nbsp;Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;followed with a 2-RBI double to score both.&nbsp;Loren Beggs&nbsp;knocked Tiffany home with an RBI single and then the Tigers loaded the bases with&nbsp;Sara Breckbill&nbsp;drawing a walk and&nbsp;Madison Pierce&nbsp;picking up a single.&nbsp;Regan Curry&nbsp;pushed one more run across with a sacrifice fly to score Beggs, making it 5-0 Tigers after two and a half innings.

Meanwhile in the pitching circle, Egger allowed only three baserunners over the first five innings. She held the Gorillas scoreless until the sixth when back-to-back singles set up runners at first and third. Egger got a strikeout before the Gorillas pushed their one run across on a sacrifice fly. She got a groundout to end any further threat from the Gorillas.

Egger finished with eight strikeouts in her complete-game effort, allowing just five hits and one walk. The Tigers did all of their scoring damage against Abby Atkin, who allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits in just 2.1 innings of work. Madison Morris held the Tigers in check the final 4.2 innings that she relieved.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 9, Pittsburg State 8 Fort Hays State put together a late rally for a come-from-behind 9-8 win in game two. The Tigers scored four runs in the seventh inning to go from three down to one up.&nbsp;Savanah Egger&nbsp;came in to preserve the lead and got the job done to give the Tigers a sweep of the doubleheader.

The Tigers held the lead early in this game when&nbsp;Madison Pierce&nbsp;hit a two-run homer in the second inning. The Gorillas immediately responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead of the day at 4-2.

The Tigers pulled back even with the Gorillas in the top of the third when&nbsp;Regan Curry&nbsp;came up with a clutch 2-out, 2-RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded. But, the Gorillas once again surged into the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Tigers had a prime opportunity to score multiple runs in the fifth, but came away with only one on a sacrifice fly by&nbsp;Betsy Parmley. The Gorillas got the run right back in the bottom half of the inning and led 8-5 going to the sixth.

The Tigers needed a rally in the seventh and&nbsp;Loren Beggs&nbsp;sparked it with a single to leadoff the inning. She moved up on a wild pitch and then scored on a&nbsp;Sara Breckbill&nbsp;double to cut the lead to two. Still with no outs, Pierce singled and Curry walked to load the bases. Parmley had a patient at bat to draw a walk and force another run in, making it 8-7. After a fly ball wasn't quite deep enough to push the tying run across, the Tigers scored the tying run when&nbsp;Kiana Blake&nbsp;put the ball in play and the Gorilla first baseman made an error. Then&nbsp;Jessica Espinoza&nbsp;pushed the Tigers in front with a sacrifice to score Curry, putting the Tigers back on top 9-8.

Egger got all three Gorilla outs in the seventh by fly out. After she picked up the first out, she allowed a walk to Taylor Lambert who already had two home runs in the game. Lambert reached second with two outs on a stolen base, but Paxtyn Hayes' flyout to center field ended the game. Egger grabbed her third save of the year by closing the door on the Gorilla offense, which had 13 hits in the game.

The save preserved a win in relief for&nbsp;Morgan Schmidt, who improved to 5-3 on the season. Schmidt relieved&nbsp;Bailey Carlson&nbsp;who went 2.2 innings in her start. Schmidt pitched 3.1 innings and allowed one run, while scattering seven hits with two walks. She struck out two. Carlson allowed the first six hits to PSU and walked two, while striking out one.

Madison Morris took the loss in relief for Pittsburg State. She could not record an out and the tying and winning runs were her responsibility. Hannah Harrison allowed the first five runs to the Tigers (two earned) in 5.0 innings of work. Taylor Compton relieved for 2.0 innings and gave up the first two runs to the Tigers in the seventh.Beggs, Breckbill, Pierce, and&nbsp;Reese Curry&nbsp;all had two hits in the game to lead the Tigers. Pierce, Parmley, and&nbsp;Regan Curry&nbsp;all had two RBIs. The Gorillas produced five of their eight runs on three home runs, the two by Lambert and one by Keelah Griffith.

McPHERSON - The Hays High girls soccer team defeated the host Bullpups 2-0 Friday night and finished third at the McPherson Invitational in McPherson Stadium.

The Indians (3-1) goals came on headers from Madelyn Martin and Dani Willeford.

Martin and Willieford were named to the All-Tournament team along with Katie Dinkel. Kyndal Ewartz of Maize South was named the MVP.

McCOOK, Neb. – The Hays High track and field teams opened their seasons at the McCook Invitational Thursday. The Indian boys had three individual first place finishes and the girls two along with a winning relay.

Jordan Dale won the high jump,
clearing 6’6”, Chason VenDerWege took the long jump with a leap of 21’5” and Grayson Walburn was champ in the discus with a throw of 135’11”.

Lilian McGrath brought home the gold
medal in the girls long jump at 16’3 ½” and Katie Linenberger was part of a
three-way tie for first in the high jump, clearing 5’0”. The 4x100 Meter Relay
team of Kacy Dinkel, Landri Dotts, Brooklynn Lewallen and Lilian McGrath finished
first with a time of 52.59.

The Indians are back in Nebraska next
Friday at the Kearney Invitational.

👟 HHS opens season with six first place finishes in McCook

McPHERSON - The Hays High girls’ soccer teams fell 2-1 in a nail-biter to Valley Center in Thursday's semifinals of the McPherson Invitational. 

Madelyn Martin scores Hays only goal in the second half. 

Hays (2-2) will play McPherson in the third-place match on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The host Bullpups lost to Maize South 4-0 in their semifinals game.

Valley Center and Maize South play for the title at 8:00 p.m.

⚽ Indian girls' come up short in Mac semifinals

HAYS - Hays High softball opened the home portion of the season by hosting Abilene on Thursday at the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex.

Game 1: Abilene 6, Hays 6 Hays High could not overcome the seven runs they gave up in the first two innings, falling to Abilene 8-6. The Indians committed four errors in those two innings and trailed 7-1 after the second.

Hays chipped away at the lead with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Elle Dreiling's two run homer in the fifth chased the Cowgirls' starting pitcher from the game with Hays closing the lead down to 7-6.

However the Indians never got any closer. Abilene scored one more run in the sixth and Hays never threatened again.

Madyson Sennett and Elle Dreiling each recorded three hits. They each scored a pair of runs. Dezarae Schmidt recorded her first varsity homerun for the Indian's first run in the game.

Aubree Thomas took the loss in the circle.

Game 2: Abilene 12, Hays 7 Like game one, Hays gave up big numbers in the first two innings while recording errors. Hays allowed nine runs before the first six outs were in the book. Abilene pushed three across in the first and six in the second.

The Indians made it a one run game by scoring two runs on a Dezerae Schmidt triple in the first inning. But Hays pushed back with just one run in the bottom of the second.

Abilene added three more runs in the fourth inning to push their advantage to 12-3 before the Indians responded with two runs in each the sixth and seventh inning for the final 12-7 score.

Lakyn Zimmerman recorded three hits in the second game.

Hays falls to 1-3 and Abilene starts their year at 2-0.

The Hays Larks have released their 2022 summer schedule which includes 26 home dates beginning with an alumni game against the Old Fort Hays Post 9 in the second annual Vintage Baseball Game on June 1st.

The Larks play their first game of the season on the road against former Jayhawk League foe Great Bend on June 2nd. The Bat Cats will play in Hays the next night in the Larks home opener..

The Larks begin defense of their Rocky Mountain Baseball League title on June 7th at home against the Dodge City A's. The Larks and A's will play four RMBL games along with two non-league games. Calif. – Kansas senior Ochai Agbaji
has been named one of five finalists for the 2022 John R. Wooden Award Men’s
Player of the Year. The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced the All-American
Team and the five finalists Wednesday evening on ESPNU.

Agbaji becomes the 25th Jayhawk to be named a Wooden Award
All-American all-time and the first since 2020, when Udoka Azubuike and Devon
Dotson both earned the honor. Agbaji now seeks to become the third Kansas
player to win the Wooden Award, joining Frank Mason III (2017) and Danny
Manning (1988).

Joining Agbaji as finalists for the Wooden Award are Johnny
Davis (Wisconsin), Keegan Murray (Iowa), Drew Timme (Gonzaga) and Oscar
Tshiebwe (Kentucky). Agbaji is the lone finalist still competing in the 2022
NCAA Tournament. All five players have been invited to Los Angeles for the 46th
annual presentation of the John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Gala.

Agbaji has already earned what will be announced as Consensus
All-America First Team honors by collecting All-America first-team nods from
the NABC, AP, The Sporting News and USBWA. Those four entities make up the
collaboration of the consensus teams recognized by the NCAA. Agbaji is Kansas’
31st all-time Consensus All-America First Team selection, which is more than
any other school. He is the first Jayhawk to earn the honor since Devonte’
Graham in 2018.

Also a finalist for the Naismith Trophy, Agbaji was named the
2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring and he
enters the Final Four with an average of 18.9 points per game. He is second in
the league in three-point field goal percentage (39.8%, 35th nationally) and
third in three-point field goals made per game (2.6, 71st nationally). He was
also named the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player and an
all-tournament selection in guiding Kansas to the tourney title earlier this
month.

A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji has etched his name into the
Kansas records book. He holds the record for consecutive games of three-point
field goals made at 53. The Kansas City, Missouri, native also ranks 16th on
the KU career scoring list with 1,619 points, fourth on the three-point field
goals made (243) and fourth on three-point field goals attempted (659).

The 46th annual John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Men’s
Player of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, April 5th on SportsCenter on
ESPN. The John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Gala will honor the Men’s

⛳ FHSU's Brasser MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week

&nbsp;HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Football will hold its annual Spring Scrimmage on Saturday, April 23 at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays. The scrimmage is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. Gates will open at 2:30 p.m. Admission is&nbsp;FREE&nbsp;for all. Tiger fans will have the opportunity to tailgate in the lot north of Lewis Field Stadium beginning at 11:30 a.m. Normally reserved during the season, parking spots will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Tigers will host a youth football camp for K-8th graders from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Included in the camp will be a punt, pass and kick competition, with the finals to be held during halftime of the spring game. Tiger fans will have the opportunity to tailgate in the lot north of Lewis Field Stadium beginning at 11:30 a.m. Normally reserved during the season, parking spots will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. 🏈 FHSU spring football scrimmage set for Saturday, April 23

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – After sitting just one stroke off the lead heading into day two of competition, Morgan Brasser ran away with the individual title at the Holiday Inn Express Classic in at the St. Joseph Country Club, a par-72 venue. She shot an opening round 2-over par 74, then backed that with an impressive even-par 72 to win the tournament by five strokes. She helped the Tigers to a fifth-place finish as a team.

Jessica Green of Rogers State led the tournament at 1-over par following the first round. Brasser held the lead for a good chunk of the first round before Green slipped to the top near the end of competition on Monday. On day two, Brasser asserted her presence by going 2-under par in her first four holes, finished her first nine at 1-under, and then eventually settled at even by shooting 1-over on the second nine. Green could not find a birdie in a 4-over par front nine, then she slipped even further with a double bogey on her 12th hole of the day and shot 6-over for the round to finish at +7 overall.

The rest of the field did not put up much of a challenge as Brasser and Green were the only two inside of +12 overall. Outside of Green, Brasser was 10 strokes clear of the remainder of the field. Brasser finished the tournament with eight birdies, eight bogeys, and one double bogey. Other than that, she was a par machine with 19 over the two rounds. Her eight birdies were best of any golfer in the field.

Kerrigan Rudolph shot 88 in the opening round and 85 in the second round to finish in a tie for 40th. Shauna Lee shot rounds of 93 and 82 to finish in a tie for 48th. Kira Mestl carded rounds of 90 and 85 to tie Lee for 48th. Lexie Ridder shot 101 and 86 to finish 65th.

Brasser's strong individual performance anchored the fifth-place finish for the FHSU women out of 13 teams competing at +93. Rogers State, ranked 20th nationally, won the tournament at +51, while Missouri Western was second at +78. Wayne State was third at +88 and Iowa Central Community College was a stroke behind at +89.

The Tigers will play their next two tournaments at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas. The Tigers will be there April 4-5 at the Newman Invitational and then April 21-23 the course will be the site of the MIAA Championships.

GARDEN CITY – The Hays High softball
team opened their season with a split against Tuesday. The Indians defeated
Liberal 6-4 in their opener then lost 3-1 on a controversial game-winning home
run by the host Buffaloes.

Game 1: Hays 6, Liberal 4 
The Indians scored two runs
in the fourth to break a 3-3 tie. Aubree Thomaas singled to drive in Haley
Rees. Dezarae Schmidt drove in the second run on a sacrifice fly. Hays pushed
the lead to 6-3 on a Rees single in right which drove in Elle Dreiling.

Liberal scored a run in the seventh thanks
to two singles and two walks before Riley Dreher got a strikeout to end the
game. 

Dreher went 3-for-3 with two triples
in her high school debut and picked up the complete game victory in the circle
with six strikeouts and six walks.

Game 2: Garden City 3, Hays 1 
The Buffaloes hit a controversial 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to
break a 1-1 tie on a ball that appeared to go wide of the foul pole but was
ruled fair.

It came after the Indians tied the
game on a Lakyn Zimmerman double to left which scored Dezarae Schmidt in the
top of the inning.

Riley Dreher had two of the Indians
six hits.

Aubree Thomas went the distance in the
circle allowing three runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

The Indians host Abilene in a
doubleheader Thursday. The doubleheader will be broadcast on KFIX (96.9-FM).

🥎 HHS splits season opener in Garden City

HAYS – The TMP-Marian softball team
opened their season with a pair of run-rule wins over Ellinwood Tuesday. The
Monarchs won by scores of 20-0 and 20-4. Both games were called after three
innings by run-rule.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 20, Ellinwood 0,
3 innings

The Monarchs scored 10 runs in each
of the first two innings. Jaci VonLintel and Madison Augustine each had three
of TMP’s 15 hits. VonLintel drove in six runs.

Halle Dreiling, Sophie Allen, Alexa
Ryersee and Brooke Koeningsman had two hits each. 

Dreiling, Augustine and Koeningsman all
had triples, VonLintel added a double.

Augustine allowed only one hit over
the three innings with six strikeouts and three walks for the win.

Game 2: TMP-Marian 20, Ellinwood 4, 3
innings 
Ellinwood scored two in the first then added another run in the second to go up
3-1 but the Monarchs answered with six in the second and 13 in the third.

Halle Dreiling hit an inside-the-park
grand slam to push TMP’s lead to 12-4 in the third.

Dreiling finished with three hits
and five RBIs. Madison Augustine also had three hits. Jessica Herrman drove in

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State senior distance runner&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6511">Robbie Schmidt</a>&nbsp;has been named MIAA&nbsp;Co-Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league office. This is the first weekly award given out by the MIAA during the 2022 outdoor season. Schmidt broke a 53-year-old school record in the 5,000m run at the Texas Relays last Thursday (March 24). The Topeka, Kan. native shaved nearly 40 seconds off his PR, completing the race in 14:05.87. That time was good for ninth place, better than seven Division I runners. He improved the school record by close to 15 seconds, a mark that had been held by Tiger Sports Hall of Famer and Olympian Larbi Oukada since 1969 (14:20.44). To date it is the second-best time in Division II this season and is a DII provisional performance. This is Schmidt's second MIAA weekly award, joining a cross country athlete of the week honor he received last fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

ALVA, Okla. – Fort Hays State left with a win and a tie from its doubleheader at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday. The Tigers took game one 6-1 before a pair of lightning delays ultimately halted play for good in game two, which ended in a 6-6 tie through six innings. The Tigers are now 14-17-1 overall on the season, while the Rangers went to 12-17-1 on the season. Game 1: Fort Hays State 6, Northwestern Oklahoma State 1 Fort Hays State jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a half inning, which was plenty of cushion for&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6352">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;who threw a complete game in the circle. Egger allowed just one run on five hits and a walk, while striking out seven.
