McPHERSON – The Hays High girls soccer team defeated Newton 4-1 in their opener at the McPherson Invitational Tournament Tuesday.
The Indians led 2-1 at the half then scored twice in the second period.
Madalyn Martin had two goals. Caroline Robben and Arely Maldonado both scored one and Katie Dinkel had two assists as HHS improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Julia Zimmerman had six saves.
Hays had 13 shots on goal compared to the Railers seven.
The Indians will play Valley Center at 6:00 p.m. Thursday. The Hornets edged Salina South 3-2 in their first-round game Tuesday.
