KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State wrestling team had two individuals recognized on the 2021 All-MIAA team, released Thursday by the league office. Both Mason Turner and A.J. Cooper&nbsp;earned a spot on the second team. Turner was an All-MIAA second team selection at 125 pounds after finishing the year 11-3 overall. The sophomore was 3-0 in MIAA duals and finished the season with five pins and four technical falls. The Kansas City, Kan. native was ranked No. 1 in the country heading into the postseason. This is Turner's first All-MIAA honor. Cooper picked up second team All-MIAA accolades at 285 pounds thanks to a 3-0 record in league duals. The senior earned All-American honors after placing fifth at the NCAA Division II Championships. He finished the year 13-4 overall, including five wins via pin. He was the top MIAA finisher at the Super Region IV Championships, placing second. KSHSAA releases spring postseason plan

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Gene Taylor, who has led K-State Athletics since 2017, has agreed to a contract extension through the 2026-27 academic year, President Richard Myers and the Kansas State Athletics, Inc., Board of Directors announced today. The agreement extends Taylor's contract through June 30, 2027, with an annual salary of $925,000 beginning in the 2021-2022 academic year. The contract also includes performance and retention incentives. Fans also contributed in FY 2018 a total of $30.9 million, of which a record $18.9 million was designated for the Ahearn Fund annual giving program surpassing its budgeted goal. This past year has presented significant challenges for intercollegiate athletics departments across the nation due to the COVID pandemic, but Taylor's leadership kept the department operating in an efficient manner. In fact, K-State was one of very few programs in the Big 12 to not eliminate positions in the department during the pandemic. Hiring and retaining top coaches is also a critical function of the program. Taylor hired Chris Klieman&nbsp;to replace hall of fame coach Bill Snyder&nbsp;after winning four national titles in five seasons at North Dakota State, and in his first two seasons has qualified for consecutive bowl games while also knocking off Oklahoma (ranked No. 5 and No. 3) in back-to-back years. The Tigers shot a three-round total of 969 (325-322-322) as a team to finish 13th. Dustin Nichols&nbsp;led the way for FHSU with a 236 total, tying for 45th. Nichols shot two rounds of 80 on Monday and then finished the tournament with a 76 on Tuesday. His 76 was the lowest round at the tournament for an FHSU golfer. Bryce Cowan&nbsp;shot two rounds of 78 to lead the Tigers on day one, but followed with an 83 on Tuesday for a 239 total. Marcus Willey&nbsp;(85-81-82) figured into the Tiger team scoring in the second and third rounds and finished third individually among his teammates. Colton Bobek&nbsp;(83-86-81) helped team scoring in the first and third rounds, while Tanner Copeland&nbsp;(84-83-85) figured into team scoring for the first and second rounds. The Tigers topped Minot State and Minnesota-Crookston from the NSIC and Newman from the MIAA in the team standings. Washburn and Missouri Western separated from the majority of the field as the top two teams. The Ichabods won their home tournament with an 861 total. Missouri Western was nine strokes back at 870. ATLANTA – The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) named Jaden Hobbs&nbsp;an All-America Honorable Mention selection for the 2020-21 season. Hobbs was recognized as one of the Top 35 players nationally in NCAA Division II by the coaches' association. She helped the Tigers to an MIAA Regular Season Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance as the No. 1 seed in the Central Region. Hobbs adds this All-America selection to her list of accolades for the 2020-21 season, which includes an All-MIAA First Team selection and MIAA All-Tournament selection. Hobbs had a tremendous season both shooting and distributing the basketball for the Tigers. She led the MIAA in assists per game (6.0) and 3-point field goal percentage (.449), setting single-season records in both categories at FHSU. She finished her season as the national leader in total assists with 155 and has a good chance of holding that distinction with the teams that remain in the national tournament. She ranks third nationally and first in MIAA in assist/turnover ratio (3.37). She also ranks eighth nationally in total steals (58) and second in the MIAA in steals per game (2.23). Hobbs ranks third nationally in total minutes played. Hobbs scored in double figures 21 times throughout the 2020-21 season and had at least six assists in 15 contests. She had four double-double performances in points and assists. Her 26-point, 12 assist performance at Pittsburg State on January 23rd&nbsp;turned out to be season highs for her in both categories. 🏀 Hobbs named All-America Honorable Mention by WBCA

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Southern California coach Andy Enfield is taking another program to the Sweet 16.

The only surprise about this one? How handily his Trojans took apart No. 3 seed Kansas.

Isaiah Mobley hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 points, All-American little brother Evan added 10 points and 13 rebounds, and sixth-seeded USC rolled to an 85-51 victory Monday night inside Hinkle Fieldhouse — more than doubling the worst margin of defeat for the Jayhawks in 49 trips to the NCAA Tournament.

“This game meant a lot to our program and our fans. USC basketball is on the rise,” said Enfield, who coached No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16 in 2013 and now has the Trojans there for the first time in 14 years.

They will face seventh-seeded Oregon in a Pac-12 showdown Sunday night.

“Over the last 80 years, it’s been like a rollercoaster,” Enfield said, “a lot of great players, great coaches, great teams, but we’re trying to build a program and sustain success, and beating a program like Kansas is a great step.”

Isaiah White contributed 13 points, Tahj Eaddy had 12 and Chevez Goodwin 10 for the red-hot Trojans (24-7), who went 11 of 18 from the 3-point arc, shot 57% from the field overall and nearly doubled up the Jayhawks on the glass.

“Everyone contributed tonight, whether it showed up on the stat sheet or not, and that’s why we won by the margin we did,” Isaiah Mobley said. “When we’re confident, I believe in our team, that we can go up against anybody.”

Marcus Garrett had 15 points for Kansas (21-9), which had never lost an NCAA tourney game by more than 16 points.

“That’s about as poor as we can play,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said, “and I’m sure Andy would say that was certainly one of their better moments, better games. It was a bad combination all the way around for us.”

One of college basketball’s tradition-rich programs, the Jayhawks had played nearly 3,200 games without ever setting foot on the floor of Hinkle Fieldhouse — the iconic hoops cathedral made famous by the Hollywood film “Hoosiers.”

The way they played Monday night, they won’t be eager to return.

The Jayhawks missed their first eight shots, most of them wide open looks. And after Christian Braun finally hit a 3-pointer, they missed three more. Throw in a couple turnovers, and they were headed for a point total straight out of the 1940s.

At the other end, the Trojans looked like they were in a pregame layup line the way Kansas kept breaking down on D.

On a sequence that perfectly summed up the first half, Braun — an 81% free-throw shooter — missed two, and Isaiah Mobley followed with a deep 3-pointer as the shot-clock expired. As the teams headed the other way again, Kansas coach Bill Self crossed his legs and reclined in his folding chair — the very picture of frustration and resignation.

Mobley’s four first-half 3s, doubling his career best for an entire game, staked the Trojans to a 40-21 lead at the break.

The reaction from former All-American guard Frank Mason III, now in the G League: “Tell Coach Self I’m headed to the game,” he tweeted at halftime. “I’ll be there by the 10 min mark; ready to sub in on arrival.”

Wilt Chamberlain wouldn’t have made a difference on this night.

Kansas trimmed its deficit to 16 early in the second half, but Enfield immediately called timeout and the momentum swing was over. White hit a trio of 3-pointers in a span of about three minutes, and Drew Peterson also knocked one down as the Trojans again stretched their lead stretched beyond 20 and effectively put the game away.

“They were obviously more prepared. They played better, coached better — we shot it miserably and it’s going to be hard to score for us over that length. And they shot it unbelievably,” Self said. “We played from a hole the entire time.”

Southern California continued a banner tournament for the Pac-12, which is now 9-1 with four of its five teams reaching the Sweet 16. The only team to lose is Colorado, which beat the Trojans in the conference tournament.

Kansas hoped the return of Jalen Wilson, who flew into Indianapolis earlier in the day, from his COVID-19 quarantine would provide a spark. But the Jayhawks’ leading rebounder was just as ineffective as everyone else against the Trojans’ big front line. Kansas wound up getting beaten 43-27 on the boards.

The Trojans play seventh-seeded Oregon, which cruised past No. 2 seed Iowa earlier in the day, in a Pac-12 showdown for a spot in the West Region finals. USC beat the Ducks in February in their only meeting this season.

“We have a lot of respect for that team,” Enfield said. “The Pac-12, we’ve been trying to tell you guys the last few years, the Pac-12 is really good. I think you’ve seen that. 🏀 Mobley Bros. lead No. 6 seed USC to rout of Kansas

The TMP-Marian Monarch boys had three players and the girl, two named to the all Mid-Continent League basketball teams announced by the
league this week.

TMP senior Jackson Schulte was named to the first-team with fellow
senior Lucas Lang and sophomore Dylan Werth were both named to the second-team.

Schulte, who surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring mark in
his senior season led TMP averaging 20 point per game. 

Werth was second on the team in scoring at 13.4 point and 6.2 rebounds per game for TMP. Lang averaged 10.8 points per game.

Hoxie’s Harlin Obioha, Ellis’ Brady Frickey, Trego’s Charlie
Russell and Ty Sides of Phillipsburg were also named to the first-team.

TMP Junior Emilee Lane was a first-team selection for the
Lady Monarchs. Sophomore Jaci VonLintel was named to the second-team.

🏀TMP lands five on all MCL basketball teams

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State's Emily Salmans&nbsp;received MIAA Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honors on Monday, March 22 for her efforts at the ESU Spring Invitational last weekend in Emporia, Kansas. Salmans won both the 800 meters and 1,500 meters at the meet. Salmans won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.30 and then won the 1,500-meter run in a personal-best time of 4:43.84. Her 800-meter time was fourth best all-time at FHSU and she sits in sixth on the all-time list in the 1,500m run at FHSU. Salmans joined Megan McManis of Emporia State (Women's Field Athlete of the Week) as the recipients of weekly honors from the MIAA office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Elgin Baylor, the Lakers' 11-time NBA All-Star, has died. The Lakers said Monday that Baylor died of natural causes in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter by his side. 

With a silky-smooth jumper and fluid athleticism, Baylor played a major role in revolutionizing basketball from a ground-bound sport into an aerial show. He was the first NBA player to surpass 70 points in a game. 

Lakers great Jerry West called him "one of the most spectacular shooters the world has ever seen." Baylor's second career as a personnel executive with the Los Angeles Clippers was much less successful.

He scored 20 or more points 11 times and pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 12 contests. Vitztum ranked seventh in the MIAA for scoring average during the regular season. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State swept a doubleheader with Lincoln University on Sunday to open MIAA play for the 2021 season. MIchaelanne Nelson&nbsp;tossed a shutout in game one and Sara Breckbill drove in nine runs to highlight the Tiger sweep by scores of 4-0 and 10-4.

FHSU improves to 8-10 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA. Game 1: Fort Hays State 4, Lincoln 0 Michaelanne Nelson&nbsp;held Lincoln hitless over its first 10 outs before surrendering a single in the fourth inning. She went on to allow one more hit in the seventh before recording her first complete game shutout of the season. She walked five and struck out seven. The Tigers went scoreless over the first four innings before Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;drove home a run in the fifth with a single. Sara Breckbill&nbsp;gave Nelson breathing room going into the bottom of the seventh when she delivered in the seventh with a 3-RBI bases-clearing double. Nelson sealed the shutout in the bottom half of the inning, picking up her fourth win of the season in the pitching circle. Breckbill and Lily Sale&nbsp;each had two hits in the game. Sale's first hit led to her scoring on the Tiffany single in the fifth. Game 2: Fort Hays State 10, Lincoln 4 Fort Hays State built a 4-0 cushion in the second contest through three innings. Breckbill pushed the lead back to two in the fifth with an RBI double, but Lincoln answered to draw back within a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. A pair of walks by Hannah Gates and Tiffany and a single by Katie Adler opening the seventh inning set up more opportunity for the Tigers to do damage with the middle of their order with the bases loaded. Beggs drove home the first run of the inning for FHSU on a sacrifice fly, then Breckbill followed with a 2-RBI single. At that point, Breckbill had drove home nine runs for the day and six within game two. She also finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate. A fielding error off the bat of Jessica Espinoza&nbsp;allowed two more Tigers to cross the plate and FHSU led 10-4 going into the last half inning.

Haley Chapman&nbsp;gave the Tigers another complete game effort in the pitching circle by working around a pair of singles in the seventh. She allowed three earned runs in the game on eight hits and four walks, while striking out six. She also picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle. For the day, Breckbill finished 6-for-7 at the plate with three doubles and three singles to produced nine RBIs, upping her season total of runs driven home to 15. She reached base in seven of eight plate appearances as she drew a walk in game one. The Tigers are scheduled to go to Washburn and Emporia State next week for another pair of MIAA doubleheaders on March 26 and 27.

UNDATED (AP) - Salvador Pérez still remembers growing up in the coastal Venezuelan city of Valencia, where as a youngster he would take batting practice against his mother with a broomstick and later play organized ball with the likes of José Altuve.

He never thought a day like Sunday could be possible.

That’s when the Royals gave the six-time All-Star catcher a four-year, $82 million deal — the richest in club history — that will begin after his current contract in 2022. The deal ties Pérez to the only organization for which he’s played until at least 2025, though a club option worth $13.5 million could keep him around for that season, too.

“It’s hard to believe where I’m coming from, where I grew up, to see the situation I have right now, it makes me feel super happy,” Pérez said from the Royals’ spring training home in Surprise, Arizona. “My mother is going to be happy. I know my grandma is going to be happy. I know they’re excited for me to be here for four more years, maybe five.”

Pérez is due a base salary of $13 million as he completes his current contract. He will make $18 million next season, $20 million in 2023 and 2024, and $22 million in 2025 with a $2 million buyout for 2026.

The value of the new deal surpasses the four-year, $72 million contract the Royals gave outfielder Alex Gordon in 2016.

“Nobody loves to play baseball more than Salvador Pérez. There are players that like it just as much but nobody loves it more,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “Nobody can imagine him not being here.”

Pérez, who turns 31 in May, has not only established himself as one of the game’s premier catchers but also one of the most beloved players in Royals history. He was World Series MVP in 2015, when the club broke its 30-year title drought, and is coming off a season in which he hit .333 with 11 homers and 32 RBIs to win his third Silver Slugger.

He also has five Gold Gloves to his name, and the Royals are counting on his ability to bring out the best in their pitchers to help a young and promising starting rotation that they hope will lead them back to the playoffs.

“I mean, the catching position is without a doubt the most demanding position in our game,” Moore said. “It’s hard, I think almost impossible, to win championships unless you have somebody behind the plate, somebody at the catcher position, that’s a leader — that brings out the confidence in your pitching staff. And Salvy does all that.”

Indeed, Pérez also has proven to be durable behind the plate. He appeared in at least 129 games six consecutive seasons, often arguing against getting days off, until missing the entire 2019 season due to Tommy John surgery.

He returned to have one of the best seasons of his career during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

“It’s the same with everybody: You trust your medical people,” Moore said. “Of course we talked about Salvy, but at the end of the day, they all signed off on it because they believe in his work ethic. They believe in the condition of his body. They believe in his heart and mind to play. He puts himself in a position to go out there every single day.”

Pérez also happens to be a personal favorite of John Sherman, the former part-owner of the AL Central rival Indians, who leads the ownership group that purchased the Royals from the late David Glass prior to last season.

Sherman called a summit in Florida in January that included Moore, Pérez and several other executives, and it was during that meeting that they began hashing out the framework for the new contract. It wound up getting done just weeks before opening day, when the Royals hope to welcome about 10,000 fans back to Kauffman Stadium for each game.

“You know, they believe in me and what I do on the field,” Pérez said, “and all the fans in Kansas City, you know?”

The small-market Royals have long had a reputation for being stingy with contracts, but Pérez’s new deal is the latest sign that Sherman and the new owners are willing to open the checkbook to put a winner on the field.

This past offseason alone, the Royals signed slugging first baseman Carlos Santana to a two-year, $17.5 million contract; they worked an aggressive three-team trade to land Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi; they lured right-hander Mike Minor back to town with a two-year, $18 million deal; they bolstered their beleaguered bullpen by signing former All-Star pitchers Greg Holland and Wade Davis, both part of their championship past.

They also have shown a willingness to reward their own. The Royals started March off by signing third baseman Hunter Dozier to a four-year, $25 million contract with the hope that he can bounce back from a rough 2020 season.

As for Pérez, he had no interest in trying out free agency for the first time after this season.

“I want to stay here,” he said simply. “I want to finish my career here.”

Rueschhoff expects to compete in the long jump, triple jump and possibly the 600 meters for the Tigers.

HAYS - After having their season cancelled due to CIVOD-19, the Fort Hats State football team was back on the field Saturday with a scrimmage against Southwestern Oklahoma State, and cruised to a 31-3 win over the Bulldogs at Lewis Field.

There were no kickoffs or punts and no hitting of the quarterback in the scrimmage.

"It was good to get back out there on the football field." said head coach Chris Brown. "You can tell we hadn't played a true game for 16 months. You can tell we're really young right now and we have a lot of guys that need to figure out our offense and defense."

After their first drive stalled near midfield, Chance Fuller connected with tight end Hunter Budke on a 14 yard touchdown pass on the Tigers second possession . Fuller completed a 12-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Alex Schremmer on third and 10 early in the possession to keep the drive alive.&nbsp;

Unofficially, Fuller completed nine of 14 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. His second scoring strike came early in the second quarter when he connected with Diante Crutchfield on a 74-yard pass to put the Tigers up 14-3.

Junior running back Keylon Chapman pushed the lead to 21-3 with a 79-yard touchdown run two possessions later. Chapman unofficially rushed for 135 yards on seven carries

Following a three-and-out by the Tiger defense, backup quarterback Vashon Waiters hit Adrian Soto on a 17-yard touchdown pass to give the Tigers a 28-3 lead with under three minutes to play in the second quarter

Jordan Starks intercepted a pass on the ensuing possession at the half.

Fernando Avila-Castro kicked a 32-yard field goal on the Tigers second possession of the third quarter.

SWOSU's only score came on a 30-yard field goal late in the first quarter. The score was set up by a 35-yard flee-flicker and a pass interference penalty on FHSU near the endzone.

The Tiger defense had stops on the next five possessions to help them gain control of the game.

FHSU is scheduled to travel to Golden, Colo. in two weeks for their final spring scrimmage against Colorado School of Mines.

⚽ Arndt provides game winner, Tigers post third shutout of the spring

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2021 spring season with a 4-0 defeat of Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon (Mar. 20) in Hays. Newcomers Amanda Rapaduski and Carly Walker&nbsp;were responsible for the four goals, including a hat trick from Rapaduski. With the win, the Tigers wrap up their non-confernece schedule at 1-1-1. The Lopers&nbsp;drop their record to 0-2 on the spring season.&nbsp; Fort Hays got out to a fast start in the first half going against the wind. Just six minutes into the match, Rapaduski&nbsp;knotted her first goal of the game. She found herself on the right side of the field with a Loper defender sprinting at her. The junior put on the brakes and powered a shot past the goalkeeper to put the Tigers on the board. A few moments later, Rapaduski&nbsp;earned a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. She cashed in on the chance to double the lead for FHSU. Rapaduski completed a first-half hat trick by sliding the ball through the short side of the keeper to end the half.&nbsp; The offensive pressure did not slow down after intermission. The Tigers added another goal midway through the second half off the foot of Walker who used the wind to her advantage as she curled her shot into the upper 90 of the net, cementing the victory for the Tigers.&nbsp;

Deonna Wellbrock and Meghan Groom combined for a clean sheet in goal. Wellbrock made a few crucial saves to keep the Lopers off the board in the first half, including a couple loose ball situations in front of the net. Groom stopped the few shots that came her way in the second half to complete the shutout.&nbsp; The Tigers will get a short break before returning to action at FHSU Soccer Stadium. Fort Hays State and Central Oklahoma will kick off from Hays on April 1 at 5:00 p.m.&nbsp;

 </figure>HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2021 spring season with a 4-0 defeat of Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon (Mar. 20) in Hays. Newcomers Amanda Rapaduski and Carly Walker&nbsp;were responsible for the four goals, including a hat trick from Rapaduski. With the win, the Tigers wrap up their non-confernece schedule at 1-1-1. The Lopers&nbsp;drop their record to 0-2 on the spring season.&nbsp; Fort Hays got out to a fast start in the first half going against the wind. Just six minutes into the match, Rapaduski&nbsp;knotted her first goal of the game. She found herself on the right side of the field with a Loper defender sprinting at her. The junior put on the brakes and powered a shot past the goalkeeper to put the Tigers on the board. A few moments later, Rapaduski&nbsp;earned a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. She cashed in on the chance to double the lead for FHSU. Rapaduski completed a first-half hat trick by sliding the ball through the short side of the keeper to end the half.&nbsp; The offensive pressure did not slow down after intermission. The Tigers added another goal midway through the second half off the foot of Walker who used the wind to her advantage as she curled her shot into the upper 90 of the net, cementing the victory for the Tigers.&nbsp;Deonna Wellbrock and Meghan Groom combined for a clean sheet in goal. Wellbrock made a few crucial saves to keep the Lopers off the board in the first half, including a couple loose ball situations in front of the net. Groom stopped the few shots that came her way in the second half to complete the shutout.&nbsp; The Tigers will get a short break before returning to action at FHSU Soccer Stadium. ⚾ Tigers swept by Rogers State

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — David McCormack gave third-seeded Kansas a spark when the big man returned from his COVID-19 quarantine in time to practice for its NCAA Tournament opener.

When the first round game against Eastern Washington began, McCormack gave the Jayhawks much more than a boost of energy.

Put on the ropes early by Tanner Groves and the Big Sky champs, McCormack responded by piling up 22 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes of work to help slow-starting Kansas rally from a 10-point second-half deficit and beat the No. 14 seed Eagles 93-84 on Saturday to advance to the second round.

“David brought us energy from the time he arrived yesterday,” said Marcus Garrett, one of his closest friends, who fought through foul trouble to add 20 points. “He was just happy to be with us, happy to be back on the court.”

Ochai Agbaji contributed 21 points, Dajuan Harris Jr. scored 13 and Christian Braun overcame a poor shooting day to score 12 as the Jayhawks (21-8) survived the scare to play sixth-seeded Southern California for a spot in the Sweet 16.

Kansas has now won 14 consecutive first-round games in the NCAA Tournament.

“We told our guys you have to play well so your teammates get a chance to experience this,” said Kansas coach Bill Self, whose team is still missing Jalen Wilson and Tristan Enaruna due to COVID-19.

“We didn’t talk about what we did not have, we talked about what we had, that we had to play well, and what we had was enough.”

Tanner Groves scored a career-high 35 points and younger brother Jacob Groves had 23 for the Eagles (16-8), whose third trip to the NCAA Tournament ended just as quickly as the first two — though not without putting up a fight.

The aptly named “Groves Bros” got Eastern Washington off to a flying start. The pair of All-Big Sky forwards combined to score the first nine points of the game and forced Jayhawks coach Bill Self to burn through early timeouts.

Kansas settled down and put together a 17-5 run and suddenly looked again like the big boys out of the Big 12. But Shantay Legans’ motley crew of underrated and overlooked sharp-shooters finished the half on a 24-10 charge.

The Groves kids were at it again. They combined for 3-pointers on three straight trips down floor, then Tyler Robertson added a fourth from the top of the key to give Eastern Washington a 46-38 lead headed into the locker room.

“I just thought Tanner had the advantage all game long and he came up big for us,” Legans said. “He came up aces.”

Compounding problems for Kansas: Garrett, one of the nation’s best defenders, picked up his third foul before the break.

Self turned to McCormack to bail the Jayhawks out. Even though he was only expected to play about 10 minutes a half after his bout with COVID-19, the big guy went to work in the paint as if he hadn’t missed a day. He scored their first eight points of the second half, trying to keep Kansas alive until his teammates could find their shots.

They finally did midway through the second half.

Still trailing 63-59, Agbaji threw down a dunk in transition to begin a game-changing 14-3 run. Seldom-used Harris drained back-to-back 3-pointers, McCormack added back-to-back buckets inside, and Garrett — who is hardly known for his outside shooting — hit the first of his three second-half 3s as the Jayhawks took a 73-66 lead.

McCormack, who tested positive for the coronavirus before last week’s Big 12 Tournament, continued to score in the post down the stretch, helping the Jayhawks avoid the same fate that befell top-four seed Ohio State and Purdue on Friday.

“We came up short but that’s alright. I’m just really happy with the performance our team put together,” Tanner Groves said. “It feels really cool that we were able to keep it really close with Kansas — make it a game, give them a little scare.”

Eastern Washington followed the recipe for an upset perfectly: It shot 50% from the field, hit 10 3-pointers, protected the ball and battled the Jayhawks to a standstill on the glass. But the Eagles’ defense let them down in the second half, when Kansas began getting open looks and knocking them down.

Kansas could get Wilson back for the next round, though the timing will be tight. The Jayhawks’ leading rebounder is due to finish his quarantine period on Sunday, meaning he would not get to practice before their next game. Enaruna would not be cleared to return until the middle of next week.

The Jayhawks will face the Trojans on Monday for a spot in the West Region semifinal game.

🏀 McCormack helps No. 3 seed KU survive Eastern Washington

&nbsp;EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team took home first place as a team in its outdoor opener Friday (March 19) at the ESU Spring Invitational thanks to six individual titles and three provisional performances. The Tigers scored 157.5 points as a team, 28 more than second-place Emporia State. The Tigers had two freshmen clear the NCAA Division II provisional threshold in the javelin throw in their first collegiate competition.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5987">Rhyann Brown</a>&nbsp;placed third with a toss of 154-3 after improving her mark by more than 14 feet on her sixth and final toss of the day, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5986">Addie Berens</a>&nbsp;finished sixth thanks to a mark of 143-2. Brown's toss is good for fourth all-time at FHSU while Berens now sits in 11th all-time at FHSU. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5964">Laurel Haley</a>&nbsp;surpassed the provisional mark in the hammer throw with a personal-best heave of 178-3 to place fourth, 14 feet better than her previous top mark and just one&nbsp;foot, five inches off the program record.  </figure>&nbsp;EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team took home first place as a team in its outdoor opener Friday (March 19) at the ESU Spring Invitational thanks to six individual titles and three provisional performances. The Tigers scored 157.5 points as a team, 28 more than second-place Emporia State. The Tigers had two freshmen clear the NCAA Division II provisional threshold in the javelin throw in their first collegiate competition.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5987">Rhyann Brown</a>&nbsp;placed third with a toss of 154-3 after improving her mark by more than 14 feet on her sixth and final toss of the day, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5986">Addie Berens</a>&nbsp;finished sixth thanks to a mark of 143-2. Brown's toss is good for fourth all-time at FHSU while Berens now sits in 11th all-time at FHSU. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5964">Laurel Haley</a>&nbsp;surpassed the provisional mark in the hammer throw with a personal-best heave of 178-3 to place fourth, 14 feet better than her previous top mark and just one&nbsp;foot, five inches off the program record. Haley was the top Division II&nbsp;finisher in the discipline and now sits in second on the all-time performance list in FHSU. The junior also placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 137-3. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5976">Emily Salmans</a>&nbsp;came away with a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 800m run with a time of 2:15.30 before crossing the line first in the 1,500m run in a personal-best 4:43.84. Her 800m time is fourth all-time at FHSU while she now sits in sixth on the all-time list in the 1,500m run.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5969">Faith Little</a>&nbsp;finished close behind in fourth in the 800m run with a personal-best time of 2:17.22, good for eighth on the all-time list at FHSU. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5975">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;finished first in both hurdle events, posting personal-best times in both the 100m hurdles at 14.97 and in the 400m hurdles at 1:04.27. 🏃‍♀️ Tiger women win ESU Spring Invite

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team won the team portion of the ESU Spring Invitational Friday (March 19) thanks to three provisional performances and six first-place finishes. The Tigers accumulated 144 points in the team score race, 19 more than second place Emporia State. All three provisional marks came in field events for the Tigers.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5931">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;opened the outdoor season with a win in the pole vault, clearing the 16-6.75 bar.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5914">Blayne Godshall</a>&nbsp;won the high jump after surpassing the provisional threshold with a personal-best clearance of 6-8.75, good for ninth all-time at FHSU.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5909">David Enns</a>&nbsp;also posted a provisional mark in the javelin throw after placing sixth with a heave of 201-0. EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team won the team portion of the ESU Spring Invitational Friday (March 19) thanks to three provisional performances and six first-place finishes. The Tigers accumulated 144 points in the team score race, 19 more than second place Emporia State. All three provisional marks came in field events for the Tigers.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5931">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;opened the outdoor season with a win in the pole vault, clearing the 16-6.75 bar.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5914">Blayne Godshall</a>&nbsp;won the high jump after surpassing the provisional threshold with a personal-best clearance of 6-8.75, good for ninth all-time at FHSU.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5909">David Enns</a>&nbsp;also posted a provisional mark in the javelin throw after placing sixth with a heave of 201-0. The Tigers took home first place in four races, including&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5929">Robbie Schmidt</a>&nbsp;in the 5,000m run. &nbsp;HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State had the potential tying run thrown out at the plate and drop the opening game of their three-game series with Rogers State 7-6 Friday afternoon at Larks Park.

Down two runs with o outs in the ninth,Drake Angeron singled to left scoring pinch runner Jaxson Webb from third but Ed Scott was called out at the plate trying to score from second, to end the game.

The Tigers are now 2-12 on the year and 2-8 in MIAA play, while the Hillcats move to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in conference action.

FHSU led for much of the contest, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Kade Wallace led off the inning with a single then advanced to third on a Grant Schmidt's double into the left field corner. Corbin Truslow followed with a double that dropped between the second baseman and right fielder, driving in Wallace. Schmidt later scored on Ed Scott's sacrifice fly.

The two runs came after starting pitcher Jake Campbell worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the first.

Rogers State scored a run with two outs in the second but the Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Angeron scored on a Conner Kessler sacrifice fly.

The HIllcats scored two runs in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3 but again the Tigers answered after Schmidt and Truslow worked back-to-back walks. After advancing to third on a fielder's choice, Schmidt scampered home on a sharp liner back up the middle from Jacob Bouzide. Tyler Olson rached on an error allowing Ed Scott to score from third. The Hillcats took their first lead of the game off the Tiger bullpen, scoring four runs on three hits and one error in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.

The Tigers had chances to draw closer in the following innings, stranding four in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.&nbsp;

Jacob Ensz&nbsp;silenced the Hillcat bats, allowing just one baserunner after the sixth inning. Starter Jake Campbell&nbsp;allowed three runs on 11 hits and two walks over 5.0 innings of work and did not figure in the decision. The redshirt-freshman struck out five batters. Brayden Smith&nbsp;(0-1) gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits with one walk over 1/3 innings of relief and suffered the loss. Ensz tossed the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits and zero walks while striking out three. The Tigers and Hillcats will wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon at Larks Park.
