HAYS - Hays High softball opened the home portion of the season by hosting Abilene on Thursday at the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex.
Game 1: Abilene 6, Hays 6
Hays High could not overcome the seven runs they gave up in the first two innings, falling to Abilene 8-6. The Indians committed four errors in those two innings and trailed 7-1 after the second.
Hays chipped away at the lead with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Elle Dreiling's two run homer in the fifth chased the Cowgirls' starting pitcher from the game with Hays closing the lead down to 7-6.

However the Indians never got any closer. Abilene scored one more run in the sixth and Hays never threatened again.
Madyson Sennett and Elle Dreiling each recorded three hits. They each scored a pair of runs. Dezarae Schmidt recorded her first varsity homerun for the Indian's first run in the game.
Aubree Thomas took the loss in the circle.
Game 2: Abilene 12, Hays 7
Like game one, Hays gave up big numbers in the first two innings while recording errors. Hays allowed nine runs before the first six outs were in the book. Abilene pushed three across in the first and six in the second.
The Indians made it a one run game by scoring two runs on a Dezerae Schmidt triple in the first inning. But Hays pushed back with just one run in the bottom of the second.
Highlights
Abilene added three more runs in the fourth inning to push their advantage to 12-3 before the Indians responded with two runs in each the sixth and seventh inning for the final 12-7 score.
Riley Dreher took the loss in game two.
Lakyn Zimmerman recorded three hits in the second game.
