Hays Wrestling Club competed in the District 4 championships Saturday, March 6 in Dodge City. Hays Wrestling Club had 52 wrestlers compete for a chance to wrestle in the Kansas State Folkstyle Championships in Mulvane March 12 to 14.

 The following 36 wrestlers will compete in Mulvane this weekend battling for a state championship.

36 from Hays Wrestling Club will compete for state championships

The state basketball tournaments in 2021 had a different look to them as opening rounds were held at home sites. The first round match ups had also been previously determined by matching up certain sub-states. The result was #1 undefeated Hays facing #6 Topeka West who entered the game at 19-2.

A perfect season came to a screeching halt for the Hays High Indians as they fall to Topeka West 52-49 in the opening round of the 5A State Basketball Tournament. Hays shot 81% from field in the first half and built their lead as high as seven points at 25-18.&nbsp;

Topeka West called a timeout and slowly pulled Hays back in and cut the gap to 32-29 at halftime by banking in a long two point basket at the buzzer.

Hays hit a cold spell in the third quarter after taking a 34-32 lead. The Indians went scoreless for the next 5:05. The Chargers didn't exactly seize control of the game scoring only five points during that time to take a 37-34 advantage. West led into the fourth quarter 39-38.

The Indians took what proved to be their final lead at 40-39 with 7:40 remaining in the game. West built a pair of five point leads before Hays rattled off five quick points that tied the game at 47 following a Carson Kieffer three pointer with 3:50 remaining.

The Indians wouldn't score again until a moment before the final buzzer for the final 52-49 margin in favor of Topeka West. Hays missed a trio of three point attempts in the final 1:15 that could have tied the game at 50.

Hays was led in scoring by the game high 24 points of Jace Linenberger. Topeka West put three in double figures, the three that led Topeka West in scoring all season long. The Chargers' final four points came from two players that scored just one total point in the first three and a half quarters.

The Indians end their season at 22-1. The loss breaks a 30 game winning streak for Hays High. Topeka West moves on to the semifinals with a 20-2 record.

Les Miles is out as Kansas’ head coach just days after he was placed on administrative leave amid sexual misconduct allegations from his tenure at LSU.

Kansas announced Miles’ departure Monday night, describing it as a mutual agreement to part ways. Miles has three years left on his original five-year contract with the school that pays him $2.775 million annually through December 2023 and includes several bonuses, among them a $675,000 retention bonus paid last November.

“I am extremely disappointed for our university, fans and everyone involved with our football program,” Kansas athletic director Jeff Long said in a statement. “We will begin the search for a new head coach immediately with an outside firm to assist in this process. We need to win football games, and that is exactly what we’re going to do.”

The 67-year-old Miles was 3-18 in two seasons with the Jayhawks. Offensive coordinator Mike DeBord was named acting head coach.

“This is certainly a difficult day for me and for my family,” Miles said in a statement. “I love this university and the young men in our football program. I have truly enjoyed being the head coach at KU and know that it is in a better place now than when I arrived.”

Last week, LSU released a 148-page review by a law firm about the university’s handling of sexual misconduct complaints campus-wide. One part described how Miles “tried to sexualize the staff of student workers in the football program by, for instance, allegedly demanding that he wanted blondes with big breasts, and ‘pretty girls.’”

The report also revealed then-LSU athletic director Joe Alleva recommended firing Miles in 2013 to university officials.

Kansas placed Miles on leave later that day and said it would conduct a review of allegations against the coach that it had previously been unaware of.

Kansas said terms of the agreement with Miles on his departure will be released in the coming days.

Miles spent 11-plus seasons with LSU, leading the school to a national title in 2007. He was fired four games into the 2016 season.

Miles was investigated at LSU after two female student workers in the football program accused the coach of inappropriate behavior in 2012.

While that 2013 investigation by the Taylor Porter law firm found Miles showed poor judgment, it did not find violations of law or that he had a sexual relationship with any students. Taylor Porter also concluded it could not confirm one student’s allegation that Miles kissed her while they were in the coach’s car with no one else present.

In an email dated June 2013 and sent to the president of LSU, Alleva wrote Miles was guilty of “insubordination, inappropriate behavior, putting the university, athletic (department) and football program at great risk.”

The Taylor Porter review had been kept confidential for about eight years until a redacted version of it was released this week after a lawsuit filed by USA Today.

For Kansas, Miles’ departure is just the latest setback for what has been college football’s worst Power Five program for a decade. The Jayhawks have not won more than three games in a single season since 2009.

Miles had been out of coaching for two years when Long hired him after the 2018 season, hoping a notable name and experienced coach could help break the apathy that has enveloped the Kansas program for a decade.

Long and Miles were friends dating to their time at Michigan in the late 1980s.

While recruiting has improved under Miles, little else has changed. The Jayhawks were winless last season for the third time in program history, losing by an average of more than 30 points per game.

Kansas has not had a winning season since 2008, the year before Mark Mangino was fired amid allegations of verbal and physical abuse. He was followed by Turner Gill, who won five games over two seasons, and Charlie Weis, who was 6-22 before getting fired four games into the 2014 season.

David Beaty was 6-42 in four seasons in charge of the Jayhawks and sued Kansas for withholding his buyout because of NCAA infractions. Beaty reached a $2.55 million settlement with the school last summer.

Taylor Porter also concluded it could not confirm one student’s allegation that Miles kissed her while they were in the coach’s car with no one else present.In an email dated June 2013 and sent to the president of LSU, Alleva wrote Miles was guilty of “insubordination, inappropriate behavior, putting the university, athletic (department) and football program at great risk.”The Taylor Porter review had been kept confidential for about eight years until a redacted version of it was released this week after a lawsuit filed by USA Today.For Kansas, Miles’ departure is just the latest setback for what has been college football’s worst Power Five program for a decade. The Jayhawks have not won more than three games in a single season since 2009.Miles had been out of coaching for two years when Long hired him after the 2018 season, hoping a notable name and experienced coach could help break the apathy that has enveloped the Kansas program for a decade.Long and Miles were friends dating to their time at Michigan in the late 1980s.While recruiting has improved under Miles, little else has changed. The Jayhawks were winless last season for the third time in program history, losing by an average of more than 30 points per game.Kansas has not had a winning season since 2008, the year before Mark Mangino was fired amid allegations of verbal and physical abuse. The doubleheader with Lincoln in Jefferson City will now be on Friday, March 19 starting at 1 pm, and the doubleheader with Central Missouri in Warrensburg will be on Tuesday, April 13 starting at 1 pm. The Tigers have a pair of non-conference games that were added after the start of the season that they will play next week on Tuesday (Mar. 16) at 1 and 3 pm in Shawnee, Oklahoma. FHSU will play Oklahoma Baptist and Cameron University that afternoon. The new date with Lincoln on March 19 will now serve as the conference opener for the Tigers.

🏀 FHSU women remain in coaches top-10

INDIANAPOLIS - The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team has been selected as the top overall seed in the Central Region of the 2021 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship, announced on Selection Sunday (March 7) by the NCAA. It is the third time the Tigers have been the No. 1 seed in the region in the last seven years. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA made the decision to select predetermined sites that will host each of the eight regional tournaments. As a result, the top-seeded Tigers will head to Warrensburg, Mo. to compete for a regional title. The&nbsp;NCAA has also reduced field sizes at all Division II Championship events&nbsp;for the 2020-21 season, with basketball moving from 64 to 48 teams. As a result, just six teams will compete in the Central Regional. Because of the reduced field size, the top two teams in each region will receive a bye into the regional semifinals. Fort Hays State will play the winner of fourth-seeded Central Missouri and fifth-seeded St. Cloud State&nbsp;on Saturday (March 13) at 5 p.m. with a trip to the regional championship game on the line.  </figure>INDIANAPOLIS - The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team has been selected as the top overall seed in the Central Region of the 2021 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship, announced on Selection Sunday (March 7) by the NCAA. It is the third time the Tigers have been the No. 1 seed in the region in the last seven years. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA made the decision to select predetermined sites that will host each of the eight regional tournaments. As a result, the top-seeded Tigers will head to Warrensburg, Mo. to compete for a regional title. The&nbsp;NCAA has also reduced field sizes at all Division II Championship events&nbsp;for the 2020-21 season, with basketball moving from 64 to 48 teams. As a result, just six teams will compete in the Central Regional. Because of the reduced field size, the top two teams in each region will receive a bye into the regional semifinals. 🏀 FHSU women top seed in NCAA II Central Regional

HAYS - The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women couldn't dig out of an early double-digit deficit and lost 57-51 to No. 14 Nebraska-Kearney in the MIAA Tournament title game Sunday on front of 1,275 fans at Gross Coliseum.&nbsp;

The loss end the Tigers (22-3) 16-game win streak and drops the Tigers to 1-3 in MIAA Tournanment title games. It's the Lopers (22-3) first MIAA Tournament title in their first trip to the finals and their first conference tournament title since 2008 (RMAC).

It took over five and-a-half minutes for the Tigers to hit their first field goal as they fell behind 13-1. The Lopers extended their lead to 16 in the second quarter. The Tigers used a 7-0 run to pull within nine but Haley Simental hit an elbow jumper to push UNK's lead to 29-18 at the half.

A Whitney Randall basketball pulled the Tigers within six with 6:30 to play in the third but UNK answered with an 11-4 run to build the lead to 13 and they would lead by 12 after three quarters.

FHSU opened the fourth on a 12-4 run, the last five coming from Jaden Hobbs whose only 3-pointer of the game pullsed the Tigers within four at 47-43. The Tigers would get as close as three on three occassions d0own the stretch following a couple of baskets from Katie Wagner and Jessie Sallach.

The Tigers had a chance to pull within one after a steal but Hobbs was called for a double-dribble then Ellisa Backes hit a three to push UNK's lead to six.

Hobbs led the Tigers with 14 points despite going 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. Wagner added 13 points and six rebounds on 6-or-8 shooting.

Brooke Carlson,. who was named the tournament's most outstanding player, led UNK with 18 points. Haley Simental, who was named to the all-tournament team along with Backes, added 14 points.

The Tigers made only three of their first 21 shots and finished 39-percent (20-52) for the game. They hit only one of their first 10 attempts from three and finished 3-of-15 beyond the arc and 8-of-16 from the free throw line.

Opening the Year Right - The Tigers have won their last 17 season openers, the longest such streak in program history. FHSU is 35-17 in season openers in program history. - Fort Hays State has also won its last 17 home openers, with the last loss coming at the start of the 2003-04 season (70-88 vs. Southwestern College). The Tigers are 25-4 in home openers since joining the NCAA Division II in 1992-93. Mark Your Calendars - Notes on the 2020-21 Schedule -With NCAA Division II's reduction to a maximum of 22 games for the 2020-21 season, the Tigers are scheduled to play an all-conference schedule this year. FHSU will play nine schools home-and-away and four schools just once (WU, ESU at home, PSU, MSSU on the road). All-Time Winningest Head Coach <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=947">Tony Hobson</a>&nbsp;won his 218th career victory at Fort Hays State University on January 5, 2019 against Southwest Baptist, giving him the most head coaching wins in program history. Sharp Shooting Leads to Victory The Tigers are 111-4 under coach Hobson when shooting 45 percent or better from the floor. Overtime Specialists The Tigers have won nine consecutive overtime contests, dating back to the final game of the 2012-13 season (3/9/13 vs UCM in KC). Filling the Seats Fort Hays State is leading the country with an average attendance of 740 per home game this season.&nbsp; The Tigers also led the MIAA in attendance last season, doing so for the seventh year in a row. The Tigers averaged 2,296 fans per home game, more than 800 more than second place (Emporia State, 1,442 per game). FHSU also ranked second nationally in attendance once again in 2019-20, doing so for the sixth year in a row. FHSU has finished in the top four nationally each of the last eight seasons and has been in the top 10 for 11-straight years. Fort Hays State had a higher average attendance than 82 percent of NCAA Division I programs, including regional schools like Kansas, Wichita State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. 🏀📻 No. 5 Tiger women host No. 14 Lopers in MIAA title game Sunday

The TMP-Marian Monarchs used a 12-2 run to get out to a quick start and then put together a 16-3 third quarter run to put away the Minneapolis Lions 68-51 in the 3A Norton sub-state championship game Saturday.

TMP (20-4) wasted no time Saturday in getting out to a quick start. After the game was tied at four Bryce Seib converted a three-point play and Jackson Schulte scored five in-a-row to put TMP up 12-4.

After the Lions closed within two, Gavin Unrein record his first bucket and Schulte knocked down his second three of the quarter to put TMP up 17-10 at the end of one.

A Lucas Lang three pointer in the second quarter gave TMP a 10-point lead at 26-16. But each time TMP built a double-digit lead Minneapolis was able to close the gap. TMP led 29-23 through two quarters.

TMP opened the second half on a 9-1 run capped off by a Lang three-point play to put TMP up 38-24. The Monarchs followed that with an 11-2 run to take a 49-28 lead.

After sitting the entire second quarter with foul trouble, TMP's Dylan Werth scored 9 of his 17 points in the third as TMP built a 56-34 lead.

Werth added six more points in the fourth quarter as TMP maintained a 23-point lead for most of the quarter on their way to the 68-51 win.

Jackson Schulte led all scorers with 20 points for TMP. Dylan Werth added 17 points and Lucas Lang scored 15 points.

TMP will travel to Hugoton on Tuesday to take on the Eagles in the first-round of the 3A state tournament.

🏀TMP boys are headed back to state with win over Minneapolis

The TMP Lady Monarchs came up short in a hard fought battle against the Phillipsburg Panthers Saturday in the 3A Norton sub-state final 68-61.

The game was tight early with the two teams trading the lead back-and-fourth to open the game.&nbsp;

TMP (19-4) lead briefly at 3-2 following an Emilee Lane three-point play and then down 6-3 the Monarchs score four straight to take a 7-6 lead.

That would be the final time that the Monarchs would lead in the game.

Phillipsburg scored five quick points to take an 11-7 lead and they never trailed again.

TMP was able to close within one at 11-10 on a Jaci VonLintel three-pointer but the Panthers took a 16-12 lead into the second quarter.

Early in the second quarter TMP closed within three at 21-18 before Phillipsburg answered with a 9-4 run to go up 30-22.

A Kyleigh Allen layup to beat the buzzer made it 32-29 at halftime.

In the third quarter TMP trailed by as many as nine but there were able to get it to four points twice, before trailing by six at 52-46 through three quarters.

The Monarchs get it to four at 52-48 to start the quarter only to see Phillipsburg put together a 7-0 run to lead by 11.

TMP was able to close the gap back t0 four at 63-59 on a 7-0 run of their own but Phillipsburg sealed the game at the free throw line on their way to the 68-61 win.

Emilee Lane led four in double-figures for TMP with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Senior Kyleigh Allen finished with 14 points, Jaci VonLintel and Megan Hamel both added 10 points.

Phillipsburg's Taryn Sides led all scorers with 26 points.

HAYS - The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women weathered a 16-0 Emporia State third quarter run but closed the game on a 15-6 run and beat the Hornets 77-72 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals in front of 1,250 Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum.

The Tigers (22-2) built an eight point lead early in the third quarter on an Olivia Hollenbeck three-point play but would go scoreless over the next five minutes and fall behind 44-36 with five minutes to play. Following two timeouts, the Tigers regrouped and closed the quarter on a&nbsp; 16-8 run to tie the game 52-52 after three quarters on a Lauryn Reither three.

Jaden Hobbs hit three of her four 3-pointers in the final three and-a-half minutes of the third quarter to fuel the comeback.&nbsp;

The Hornets (17-8) led by four with five minutes to play in the fourth but Reither and Emma Ruddle both hit a pair of free throws to tie the game then Whitney Randall hit a fast break layup to put FHSU ahead for good with 3:48 to play.

Hobbs played all 40 minutes and led the Tigers with 18 points and eight assists. Madison Mittie and Katie Wagner both scored 13 and Hollenbeck 12.

Hobbs and Mittie both hit four of the Tigers 11 threes.

FHSU shot 40-percent (25-63) from the floor including 11-26 from beyond the arc. The Hornets shot 42-percent (26-62) and after going 4-of-17 from beyond the arc in the first half, hit 8-of-13 in the second half.

The Hornets went 8-for-8 from the free throw line while the Tigers knocked in 16 of their 19 foul shots.

The top-seeded Tigers advance to the MIAA Tournament finals for the fourth time in six years. They will play Nebraska-Kearney at 2:00 pm Sunday at Gross Coliseum. The third-seeded Lopers defeated Washburn 59-40 in Saturday's second semifinal to advance to their MIAA Tournament title game.

🏀 No. 5 Tiger women pull away late to beat Hornets to advance to MIAA finals

It was a state ranked showdown Saturday afternoon in Hays for a spot in the 5A State Basketball Tournament. #1 undefeated Hays High and #5 Salina South seemed to be on a collision course since the Sub-State groupings were released.

Big first and fourth quarters hoisted Hays to the 5A State Tournament for a 21st time in program history, winning 61-48 over Salina South. The Indians made eight of ten shots in the first quarter and six of nine shots in the fourth. The South Cougars made two of twelve shots in the first and four of twenty in the fourth quarter.

Hays jumped out to an 8-1 lead and led 16-7 with fifteen seconds remaining in the first quarter. South made two free throws with two second left in the first which ignited a 10-0 for the Cougars first lead at 17-16.

The score would be tied seven times and change hands on twelve occasions over the next sixteen and a half minutes. During that stretch the Cougars could never grow their lead higher than two points which they held four times in the second quarter.

The Indians lead most of the third quarter which started with eight straight Dalyn Schwarz points. Hays though didn't take advantage of a four point lead on six trips up the floor. South managed the final five points of the third for a 39-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Hays and South changed ownership of the lead five times in the fourth quarter. The final exchanged occurred on a pair of TJ Nunnery free throws with 5:14 left, giving Hays a 44-43 edge. The balance of the time belonged to the Indians on a 19-5 run. A decisive 10-0 spurt put the Hays up by double figures for the first time on the afternoon 54-43 with two minutes remaining.

The Indians made 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter for a 61-48 victory.

Jace Linenberger scored 20 while battling foul trouble to lead all scoring. Three more Indians scored in double figures. Dalyn Schwarz scored 15, Carson Kieffer added 12 and TJ Nunnery put in 10 points. Salina South was led by the 17 of Devon Junghans and 13 from AJ Johnson.

Hays improves to 22-0 on the season and will host Topeka West in the first round of the 5A State Tournament on Tuesday. The #6 ranked Chargers beat Topeka Seaman 55-52 and improved to 19-2 on the year. Salina South ends the year at 16-5. Their losses came to Derby, Maize twice, Campus and the Indians.

He buried it to put the Tigers up 2-0, which is the score they led by at halftime. HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team fell in both games of a double header at Central Oklahoma on Saturday (Mar. 6), dropping game one 8-4 and game two 7-5. The Tigers and Bronchos wrap up the series tomorrow with a 1:00 pm finale in Edmond. Game 1 – Central Oklahoma 8, Fort Hays State 4 Fort Hays State was held scoreless for a majority of this game before tacking on four runs in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and down to two outs,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6051">Kade Wallace</a>&nbsp;came in as a pinch hitter.
