NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge homered for the first of his
three hits, Gary Sánchez connected for the second straight game and the New
York Yankees got their first blowout victory in a month, beating the Kansas
City Royals 8-1. 

Judge got New York started with a solo shot in the first, Luke
Voit had another in the third and Sánchez blew the game open with a three-run
drive in the sixth. 

It was the first time New York won by more than four runs
since May 22, when the Yankees routed the Chicago White Sox 7-0. 

Jameson
Taillon matched a season high by pitching 6 1/3 innings.

HAYS – The Boulder Collegians
scored six runs in the top of the 11th inning and beat the Hays Larks 11-5 Wednesday
night at Larks Park, snapping the Larks six-game win streak.

The Larks (11-2) commit eight errors and strand 13 baserunners.

The Collegians scored two runs
in each of the first two innings and built and early 4-0 lead. The Larks
rallied with two in the third on a Grant Schmidt two-run homer then three in the
fourth on a Brock Lummus two-run triple and wild pitch to take a 5-4 lead.

The Collegians tied the game
with a run in the sixth then took advantage of two errors then strung together
three-straight singles in the 11th. 

The Larks got two on with two
outs but couldn’t score in the bottom of the inning.

Cade Brown was the last of six Larks pitchers and suffered the loss after
giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits over 2/3 innings. Wyatt Divis
also gave up three runs (two earned) in 3 1/3 innings of relief. 

Starting pitcher Luuk ter Beek
allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks
over the first four innings.

Schmidt and Divis had two of
the Larks 11 hits. Schmidt and Lummus both drove in two runs.

The Larks are off Thursday and
Friday before opening a two-game series with the Colorado Sox Saturday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aroldis Chapman bent over sharply and cursed at himself after blowing a save with a four-pitch bases-loaded walk and falling behind on an infield single.

Just 13 minutes later, the closer and the rest of the Yankees were all smiles. Gary Sánchez's tying home run off Greg Holland and Luke Voit's winning single that landed inches from the top of the left-field fence sent them running onto the field with yet another late come-from-behind win.

“I need to get in the weight room. These last two games I keep hitting the top of the wall,” Voit said with a chuckle after the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 Wednesday night in a game that see-sawed three times in the last two innings.

New York has won six of its last eight games, cutting a nine-game deficit in the AL East to 4 1/2 games behind first-place Boston ahead of the Yankees' first trip to Fenway Park this season. In five of the victories, the Yankees came from behind in the seventh inning or later.

New York came from behind three times Wednesday.

Ryan O'Hearn homered for the second straight day following his recall from the minors, putting Kansas City ahead with a two-run drive in the first off Michael King.

Clint Frazier tied the score in the fourth against Carlos Hernández with a two-run, opposite-field double off the base of the manual scoreboard in the right-field wall, which due to the coronavirus has not been used since 2019.

Carlos Santana gave the Royals a 3-2 in the eighth with the first home run off Zack Britton since the 2019 AL Division Series, only for Rougned Odor to hit a two-run homer in the bottom half against Jake Brentz.

Chapman (5-2) converted his first 11 save chances but has blown three of his last eight. He allowed a one-out single to Michael A. Taylor and a two-out bloop single to Whit Merrifield that put runners at the corners.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone went to the mound, then returned to the dugout and ordered an intentional walk to Santana.

“Probably not really what Chapman wanted to do there,” Sánchez said.

Rookie Sebastian Rivero, a rookie who is 0 for 7 in his career and entered in the fourth inning after Salvador Pérez took a foul tip off his mask, came up with the bases loaded. Chapman threw a fastball in the dirt, then bounced a slider into Sánchez's chest protector and then another fastball that sent dust flying. Chapman fired a fastball about a foot outside for a four-pitch walk and screamed.

On the very next pitch, O'Hearn checked his swing and hit a slow roller to third, just beating DJ LeMahieu’s throw to first. When Chapman reached the dugout after Jarrod Dyson's inning-ending groundout, he slammed his glove.

Aaron Judge struck out for the fourth time leading off the bottom half against Greg Holland (2-3), who got his fifth save Tuesday night in the Royals' series-opening 6-5 win.

Sánchez lined a fastball into the left-field seats for his 12th homer, his seventh in his last 22 games.

“I pride myself in not making two-strike mistakes and that's what burned me with the first one," Holland said.

Giancarlo Stanton singled to right, pinch-runner Tyler Wade advanced on a wild pitch and up came Voit, who homered Tuesday in his return from the injured list but struck out three times Wednesday, stranding the bases loaded in the seventh.

Voit fouled off a pair of two-strike sliders and reached down for a curveball and turned it around at 105 mph, sending it 370 feet off the wall. Wade scored standing up with Voit's first game-ending hit in the majors and New York's sixth walk-off win this season.

“This is the type of win,” Voit said, “coming back twice and winning it in a big way, to get us back on a good hot streak and rolling into the second half of the season.”

Holland has blown four of nine save opportunities.

“That ball was supposed to be in the dirt,” Holland said. “I thought the pitch was pretty close to hitting the dirt, but it must not have been close enough.”

Kansas City walked 11 batters, its most since July 5, 2019, against Washington, and New York's most since April 9, 2017, at Baltimore. Danny Duffy lasted two innings and 42 pitches in his return from a left flexor strain that had sidelined him since May 12. Duffy walked three, as did Hernández. Scott Barlow and Brentz walked two apiece, and Josh Staumont one.

“Hopefully,” Boone said, “we can continue to carry this.”

Fans booed umpires when they checked King for banned foreign substances after the second inning.

Royals: Pérez took a foul tip off the mask on Duffy’s fifth pitch of the game, with LeMahieu leading off the first. The 31-year-old Pérez, a six-time All-Star, has played in all 72 games this season. Metheny said he had a headache from the mask jamming his chin but was negative for a concussion.

Yankees: 3B Gio Urshela did not play, a day after he was hit in the left shin by Jake Brentz's pitch. The shin was swollen and sore.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State track and field
student-athlete Ryan Stanley is a finalist for the 2021 MIAA Men's Spring
Student-Athlete of the Year Award, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group.
The award is the MIAA's highest honor for student-athletes during the spring
sports season, given to one female and one male.

This award temporarily replaces the annual Ken B. Jones
Award, which normally recognizes the top female and top male student-athlete in
the MIAA for all seasons. However, since fall sports did not have an
opportunity to post accolades for this academic year, the MIAA COVID-19 Task
Force implemented student-athlete of the year honors for both the winter and
spring seasons with the nomination and selection process structured identically
to the Ken B. Jones Award. Whitney Randall of FHSU Women's Basketball was named
the MIAA Women's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year earlier in 2021.

The award combines the athletic, academic, and
campus/community service accomplishments of the individuals. The voting
committee, which includes administrators from all MIAA member schools, reviews
an individual's career academic accomplishments, along with their athletic
accomplishments and campus/community service from the 2020-21 year. Individuals
must be a junior or senior in athletic eligibility and have a GPA of at least 3.25.

Male Finalists for the Spring Student-Athlete of the Year
Award are Kizan David of Lincoln (track and field), Blake Freeman of
Northeastern State (baseball), Ryan Stanley of Fort Hays State (track and
field), Dusty Stroup of Central Missouri (baseball), and Levi Wyrick of
Pittsburg State (track and field).

Female finalists for the Spring Student-Athlete of the Year
Award are Ashlan Burton of Central Missouri (track and field), Sydni Hawkins of
Missouri Western (softball), Trace Mosby of Pittsburg State (track and field),
Virgi Scardanzan of Washburn (track and field), and Gail Young of Northeastern
State (softball). Mattie Rossi, an All-America performer in the heptathlon, was
Fort Hays State's female nomination for the award.

Ryan Stanley was the NCAA Division II National Champion
during the 2021 outdoor track and field season in the pole vault. He cleared a
new school record 17 feet, 2.75 inches to tie for first place. He then cleared
the height again to win a jump off for the national title against Trivett Jones
of Angelo State (Texas). In the process, Stanley produced his fourth
All-America performance at FHSU and his second this year after finishing fourth
nationally during the indoor season. He is now a two-time All-America performer
in the pole vault both indoor and outdoor. He is also a four-time USTFCCCA
All-Region performer going back to 2019. Stanley set new FHSU records in the
pole vault both outdoor and indoor (16 feet, 11.5 inches) in 2021. He is only
the second individual in school history to clear 17 feet.

Stanley has been near perfect in the classroom in three
years at FHSU, compiling a 3.97 GPA as a Management major. The Bennington,
Kansas native is a three-time recipient of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Award and
a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Holding a perfect 4.0 GPA
over his first two years at FHSU, he twice received the MIAA Academic
Excellence Award. He also earned MIAA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2021 for
securing All-MIAA honors and holding at least a 3.5 GPA. Stanley is also a
three-time recipient of the FHSU Athletics Academic Excellence Award and a
six-time member of the Dean's Honor Roll at FHSU.

Stanley has also been very active on campus and in the
community. He was the male recipient of the Cerv's FHSU Student-Athlete
Distinguished Leadership Award in 2021. Stanley joined three other FHSU
students to design "MeHe" a mobile phone app centered on maintaining
positive mental health. The group won the 2020 Kansas Startup competition at
FHSU with their presentation. He has also served as a senator for the Robbins
College of Business and Entrepreneurship for three years. During the 2021-22
academic year, Stanley will serve as the FHSU Student Body Vice President after
being voted into office in 2020-21. On top of that, Stanley has been an active
leadership team member of Christian Challenge at FHSU over three years,
participating in multiple community service projects. He served the community
and FHSU Alumni through work as a VIP Ambassador under the direction of FHSU
President Dr. Tisa Mason for two years. This summer, he is on staff with
Project Apprentice, a discipleship program in Lawrence, Kansas focused on
discipline, service, and community.

Ryan Stanley Named Finalist for MIAA Spring Student-Athlete of the Year

ST. JOSEPH, MO. —After a temporary relocation to Kansas City last year due to COVID-19, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced that their Training Camp will return to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph this July.

The camp will be open to fans again, as this marks the Chiefs' 11th year of training camp at Missouri Western.

"The energy and excitement of Training Camp will be another welcome sign that we are returning to normal. It will set the stage for an exciting and engaging fall semester," said Missouri Western president Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy in a release.

The Chiefs also announced dates and times for all practices, which start on Wednesday, July 28 and conclude on Wednesday, August 18.

Nearly all training camp practices will be free to the public. Missouri Western will charge a $5 admission fee on three practice days – July 30, July 31 and August 8. There will be a $5 parking fee each of those days, and cash will be accepted for that.

All training camp tickets must be reserved in advance through the Chiefs Kingdom Rewards program at www.chiefskingdomrewards.com. Due to heightened demand, attendance at daily practice will be limited to provide the best fan experience.

Fans without Chiefs Kingdom Rewards accounts who wish to reserve Training Camp tickets can sign up for free at www.chiefskingdomrewards.com.

Ticket reservation will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 7. Fans can reserve a maximum of four tickets per practice and can reserve tickets for a maximum of three separate practices.

All tickets are mobile entry only. Due to NFL protocols, no autographs are allowed this year.

The Chiefs will host two free, exclusive Season Ticket Member Days that won't be open to the public. Those will be July 28 and August 10. Parking will be free on both of those days.

Per Missouri Western policy, all parking and paid admission date ticket sales are final.

JOSEPH, MO. —After a temporary relocation to Kansas City last year due to COVID-19, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced that their Training Camp will return to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph this July.The camp will be open to fans again, as this marks the Chiefs' 11th year of training camp at Missouri Western."The energy and excitement of Training Camp will be another welcome sign that we are returning to normal. It will set the stage for an exciting and engaging fall semester," said Missouri Western president Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy in a release.The Chiefs also announced dates and times for all practices, which start on Wednesday, July 28 and conclude on Wednesday, August 18.Nearly all training camp practices will be free to the public. Missouri Western will charge a $5 admission fee on three practice days – July 30, July 31 and August 8. There will be a $5 parking fee each of those days, and cash will be accepted for that.All training camp tickets must be reserved in advance through the Chiefs Kingdom Rewards program at www.chiefskingdomrewards.com. Chiefs training camp officially returning to St. Joseph

OMAHA – The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion baseball team
closed out the Battle of Omaha with an 11-2 win over the Salina (OK) Wildcats Wednesday
morning.

The Eagles (9-4) used a six-run second and a four-run third
inning to cruise to the run-rule victory.

Hays’ Derrick Riggs got the scoring started in the bottom of
the second with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. A second run came into score on
the throw making it 2-0.

After back-to-back walks, Brady Kreutzer singled in a run
for a 3-0 lead. Hays then scored on an error and a Garrett Wellbrock single
making it 5-0. Dalton Dale’s RBI single in the next at bat put Hays up 6-0.

With two outs in the bottom of the third inning the Eagles
took advantage of several Wildcat miscues.

In the four-run inning the Eagles loaded the bases on a
hit-by-pitch and then scored on a hit-by-pitch. Hays plated two more runs on an
error by the third baseman and then with the bases loaded Dale walked to give
Hays the 10-0 lead.

The Eagles added their 11th run in the bottom of
the fourth on a fielder’s choice.

Salina got two runs back in the top of the fifth but Hays
earned the 11-2 win.

Brady Kreutzer drove in a pair of runs for Hays. 

Dalton Dale earned the win. He allowed two runs on five hits
with five strikeouts in five innings.

Hays finished 3-1 in at the Battle of Omaha.

⚾Eagles cruise to win over Salina Wildcats

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa —&nbsp; Iowa Western Community College has 
announced the hiring of Shane Larson as its next Director of Athletics. 
Larson, who makes the transition from Cowley College in Arkansas City, will lead
 a nationally renowned Reiver athletic program that features 21 sports 
and more than 700 student-athletes.

"This is an exciting time for Iowa Western as we usher in a new era 
of Reiver Athletics under the direction of a highly motivated director,"
 said Iowa Western President Dr. Dan Kinney. "Shane comes to Iowa 
Western highly recommended by his peers and we are happy to welcome him 
to the Reiver family."

Larson has served as Director of Athletics at Cowley College since 
2014, where he was a member of the president's leadership team and had 
direct oversight of 18 sports programs and 26 staff members. Since 2018 
he has represented Cowley as Women's Region Director for NJCAA Region VI
 and was previously Assistant Men's Region Director for three years.

Prior to Cowley, Larson was head women's basketball coach at 
Kaskaskia (Ill.) College and also served as assistant women's basketball 
coach and assistant registrar at Midland University in Fremont, Neb. He 
was head women's basketball coach and coordinator of the Sports 
Management Program at Dana College in Blair, Neb., from 2008 to 2010.

Larson has a Master of Science in Health Education from Fort Hays 
State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from 
Bethany College. He earned an Associate's Degree from Cloud 
County Community College in 1997. He is presently working 
toward his Doctorate of Education at Southwestern College in Winfield.

"Iowa Western is one of the top junior college athletic programs in 
the country and I am excited for the opportunity to be a part of it," 
Larson said. "I want to thank Dr. Kinney for this amazing opportunity. 
It is an honor to be entrusted with this responsibility and a privilege

Fort Hays State alum named athletic director at Iowa college

HAYS – Sam Crowell homered and drove in five in his return and
the Larks knocked off the Boulder Collegians 10-4 Tuesday night at Larks Park.

Crowell’s two-run home run in the second got the scoring
started in a three-run inning for the Larks (11-1, 5-1 RMBL).

Crowell added a two-run single and Palmer Hutchison tripled
in a run giving Hays a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Two innings later Crowell drove in his fifth run of the game
to give Hays a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Hays scored an eighth run
on an error one batter later and led 8-0 through five innings.

The Collegians rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth
inning but Hays got a Leo Jiminian RBI single and Hutchison sacrifice fly in
the bottom of the seven to take the 10-4 lead. 

Jackson Blue allowed four unearned runs over six innings and
got the win in his first start of the summer for the Larks. He struck out two
and allowed five hits and one walk.

Sam Crowell and Palmer Hutchison both finished
three-for-three. Crowell homered and drove in five runs. Hutchison was just a homerun
shy of the cycle. 

The Larks have won seven games in-a-row and will go for the
sweep Wednesday at Larks Park.

Hammeke, a 6-foot guard, will be a true freshman coming from Trinity Catholic High School in Hutchinson, Kansas. Hammeke will join his older brother Kaleb on the Fort Hays State Men's Basketball team. As a senior in 2021, Lucas earned All-State All-Class Third Team honors (Top 30 players in Kansas) by Sports in Kansas, while also receiving an All-State First Team selection for Class 2A by Sports in Kansas, the Wichita Eagle, and the Topeka Capital Journal. He was tabbed the Player of the Year in Reno County by the Hutchinson News in 2020 and was twice a member of the All-Reno County First Team. Hammeke averaged better than 20 points per game as a senior and broke Trinity Catholic's scoring record, while passing the 2,000-point mark in his prep career. He received all-state honors his final three years of high school.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚾Hays Eagles Senior Legion knock off Omaha Spikes

LOS ANGELES —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a member of the Kansas City Chiefs on felony charges after an arrest Sunday&nbsp; in Los Angeles.

Just before 9:30p.m. Sunday, police stopped a vehicle driven by <a href="https://www.chiefs.com/team/players-roster/frank-clark/">28-year-old Frank Clark</a> for an alleged code violation, according to online LAPD records.

Officers observed an Uzi in a bag in the vehicle and arrested Clark&nbsp;on a requested charge of a concealed firearm in a vehicle violation. He spent the night in jail and bonded out Monday afternoon.&nbsp;His lawyer says the gun belonged to a bodyguard, according to the Associated Press.

The case will be presented to the LA County Prosecutor's Office.

Clark is in his seventh season as defensive end from the University of Michigan and 2021 is his third season in Kansas City, according to his bio on the team website.

Update: KC Chiefs DE jailed for alleged weapons violation

OMAHA – The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion baseball team
spit their first two games at the Battle of Omaha Monday. The Eagles rallied
from an early deficit to beat Burke-Primetime (NE) 11-9 in extra innings then were
held to four hits and lost 11-4 to the Minot (ND) Vistas at Burke high school.

The Eagles (7-4) were held hitless for the first three
innings and fell behind 5-0 in their opener against Burke-Primetime then scored
six in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Caden Morgan started the rally
with a one-out run-scoring single to right. Ben Krannawitter followed with a
single to left to load the bases then Brady Kreutzer doubled to deep left which
scored three. Dalton Dale’s two-out single to left scored Kreutzer to tie the
game. Carson Spray then doubled to right which scored Dale.

A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the inning tied the
game 6-6.

In extra innings, Spray singled home a run in the top of the
seventh only to see Burke answer in the bottom if the inning.

Remington Cox walked to lead off the eighth then later
scored on a wild pitch. Garrett Wellbrock drew a bases loaded walk to push the
lead to 9-7. Dalton Dale followed with a double scoring Brayden Dreher and Ben
Krannawitter which built the lead to 11-7.

Burke scored two in the bottom of the eighth and had the
bases loaded with two outs when Carson Spray got a groundout to end the game.

Spray (2-0) pitched the final inning in relief and picked up
the win. Starter Blake Schmidt allowed five runs on five hits with five walks
and no strikeouts. Brady Kreutzer followed and allowed one run in one inning of
work. Dalton Dale they pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Kreutzer, Dale and Spray all had two hits. Kreutzer and Dale
both drove in three runs while Spray knocked in two.

The Eagles fell behind 5-0 in their second game against
Minot before scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth and three in the fifth
to pull within 6-4 but the Vistas answered with three in the top of the sixth
for the 9-4 victory.

Garrett Wellbrock (2-2) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on
11 hits with two strikeouts and three walks over 5 1/3 innings and suffered the
loss.

Kreutzer, Wellbrock, Caden Morgan and Gage Porter had the
only hits in the game for Hays who plays the Omaha Spikes at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Whit Merrifield got his 800th major league hit in the first and hit a two-run homer in the sixth against Yacksel Ríos.

The Hays Larks collected 19 hits and hit four runs as they picked up their sixth win in-a-row Sunday 16-9 over the Denver Cougars at Larks Park in Hays.

The Larks (10-1, 5-1) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first inning.

The first four hitters of the game reached base for the Larks in the bottom of the first as they hit for the cycle as a team.

After a Grant Lung single, Cam Pehrson homered to put Hays up 2-0.&nbsp; Wyatt Divis followed with a triple and then Grant Schmidt doubled him home for a 3-0 lead.&nbsp;

Two batters later Core Jackson singled and then Brock Lummus followed with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field making it 6-0 Hays.

After the Larks added a run on a wild pitch in the second inning Denver plated two runs in the top of the third inning cutting the Hays lead to 7-2.

In the bottom of the third inning the Larks sent 10 to the plate and scored five runs to take a 12-2 lead.

With the bases loaded Zach Henry was hit by a pitch and followed by a Grant Lung grand slam to put Hays up by 10.

Denver (3-11, 1-5) got three runs in the top of both the fifth and sixth innings to make is 12-7 Hays.

Lummus drove in a third run in the bottom of the sixth inning making it 13-8 Hays through six innings.

After Denver got a run back in the top of the seventh to cut Hays’ lead to 13-9, Hays scored three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Divis opened the inning with a two-run home run making it 15-9 Larks. Core Jackson tripled home a run to put Hays up 16-9.

Corey Bright earned the win for Hays. He allowed five runs over four and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts and four walks.

Lung was two-for-six with four RBI’s and two runs. Lummus drove in three runs. Pehrson, Divis and Jackson all drove in two runs.

Hays will have Monday off before hosting the Boulder Collegians for a two-game series starting Tuesday.

HAYS – Dylan Dreiling hit a grand slam and drove in five
runs to help lead the Hays Larks to a 9-3 win over the Denver Cougars Saturday
night at Larks Park. Dreiling’s two-out, bases-loaded blast over the right field wall capped a six-run third inning which gave the Larks the lead
for good. 

Grant Schmidt gave the Larks (8-1, 5-1 RMBL) a 3-2 lead with a
two-run homer following a Wyatt Divis single. Schmidt has now homered in two straight and four of the last five games he's played in. Leo Jiminian followed with a single then back-to-back walks to Core Jackson and Palmer Hutchison set up Dreiling’s
big blow.

Dreiling drove in his fifth run of the night in the seventh on a line drive single to left
which scored Palmer Hutchison who drove in a run with a
double to left earlier in the inning.

The Larks grabbed the early lead, scoring a run in the second on an
error. The Cougars (3-10) answered with two runs in the top of the third.

Dreiling, Wyatt Divis and
Core Jackson all had two hits.

Jose Velazquez (3-0) pitched three scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win allowing only one hit with four strikeouts and a walk.
Starter Jake Fitzgibbons allowed two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and
four walks over three innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Light-hitting Bobby Dalbec had three RBIs and was a double short of a cycle, J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Saturday.

Dalbec, Boston's No. 9 hitter, singled in the second, put Boston ahead 2-1 in the fifth with his team-high third triple, was hit by a Jackson Kowar pitch in the seventh and hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Kowar.

Dalbec is 12 for 45 with four homers and 10 RBIs in his last 12 games, raising his average to .214 and OPS to .699. He has nine homers and 32 RBIs.

“We did a lot of good things today," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "We didn’t rely on the big guys today, so it was a good all-around win.”

Martín Pérez (5-4) allowed one run and three hits in five innings.

“Today I was attacking hitters well," Pérez said.

Garrett Whitlock, Hirokazu Sawamura and Brandon Workman combined for four innings of four-hit shutout relief.

Brad Keller (6-7) lost his third straight start, giving up five runs, five hits and three walks in five innings.

Kansas City went 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners.

“We had some good chances with the offense, but we just couldn’t get it done," Royals manager Mike Matheny said.

Kowar allowed two runs, three hits and two wild pitches in three innings, but the 24-year-old rookie right-hander cut his ERA from 36.00 to 18.00 in three big-league appearances.

Kansas City's Whit Merrifield stole three bases, raising his major league-leading total to 20. But after swiping third base in the third inning with the score 1-1, he got caught off third on Salvador Pérez's comebacker and easily was tagged out in a rundown for the second out.
