The Hays Larks will celebrate their 75th anniversary season at Friday night’s home game against the Denver Cougars. Game time has changed; it will be an hour earlier, with first pitch at 6 p.m. at Larks Park.

More than 60 Larks legends are expected to return to Hays this weekend. They will be introduced between innings at Friday’s game. After the game, there will be a free concert at the park, with the band Homebrew performing.

Larks baseball cards are available for purchase starting Friday, at the Phaze 2 apparel store at the park. The store also will have available for purchase 75th anniversary caps, T-shirts and women’s tank tops.

Also at Friday’s game, raffle tickets will go on sale for a Larks jersey signed by Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman. A total of 150 tickets costing $20 each will be sold, with the winner announced once all tickets have been purchased.

Larks fans also can view signs on the back grandstand of former Larks who went on to have notable careers in the major leagues.

75th anniversary party: Big night Friday at Larks Park

HAYS - Hays Larks outfielder Grant Schmidt shrugged off a slow start and provided the late game heroics with a walk-off home run Wednesday night in an 8-7 Hays win over the Kansas Cannons at Larks Park.

The Larks (7-1, 3-1 RMBL) found themselves in a early 3-0 hole after a half inning.

The Cannons loaded the bases with one out in the top of the innings and&nbsp;scored on a sacrificed fly and a two-run single to go up 3-0.

Hays got a run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Cam Pehrson.

Pehrson drove in his second of three RBI's on a single in the third making it 3-2.

After the Cannons scored two in the top of the fifth to go up 5-2, Hays sent 11 men to the plate in a five-run bottom of the fifth.

In the inning the Larks scored twice on bases loaded walks and then added solo runs on a Leo Jiminian RBI single, Brock Lummus sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to give Hays the 7-5 lead.

The lead was short lived though as the Cannons plated two in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at seven.

Larks pitching retired 10 of the final 11 hitters they faced and set up the Larks for a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth.

In the ninth Grant Schmidt lead of the inning and took a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to give Hays the walk-off 8-7 win.

Grant Schmidt was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts before the ninth inning home run, his fourth of the summer.

Cade Brown was the last of six pitchers on the night for Hays and he picked up the win.

He allowed just one hit in an inning with two strikeouts.

Wyatt Divis finished three-for-five and Matt Cavanagh collected two hits in his first action of the season.

Hays returns to action Friday against the Denver Cougars.&nbsp;

GREAT BEND – The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion
baseball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the
Great Bend Chiefs 9-7 in game one of their doubleheader Wednesday night at the
Great Bend Sports Complex. The Chiefs plated an unearned run in the bottom of
the sixth and win the nightcap 4-3.

Brady Kreutzer’s bases-loaded triple in the top
of the seventh inning drove in three to give the Eagles (6-3) the lead for good
in the first game. Kreutzer also homered in the first and drove in four. Dalton
Dale added a two-run homer in the first following a Garrett Wellbrock double off
the fence in left to give Hays and early 3-0 lead. Dale went 3-for-4 and drove
in three runs.

The Chiefs (4-2) scored four in the fourth to tie
the game 6-6 then took the lead with a run in the fifth.

Dalton Dale (1-2) pitched two scoreless innings
of relief and picked up the win after starter Carson Spray allowed seven runs
(two earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts and two walks over five innings.

The Eagles scored two in the fifth on Ben
Krannawitter’s single to tie the second game 3-3. Great Bend later took
advantage of a one-out error to score the go-ahead run in the sixth inning in
game two.

Krannawitter had two of the Eagles five hits and
drove in two of their three runs.

Garrett Wellbrock (2-1) allowed four runs (three
earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks over 5 2/3 innings and
suffered the loss.

The Eagles return to action Monday morning at the
Battle of Omaha at Omaha-Burke HS.

⚾ Senior Legion splits with Great Bend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —&nbsp;Willi Castro homered during a three-run rally in the seventh inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 Wednesday for a three-game sweep.

It was the Tigers’ first sweep in Kansas City since 2014.

The Royals have lost six in a row and 11 of 12. Kansas City starter Brady Singer was removed after just three innings with tightness in his pitching shoulder.

“It popped up after his last start,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “We knew going into today that we were going to see how he was feeling and try to limit the work. We’ll see how he responds from here, but we were just being cautious.”

Tarik Skubal (4-7) picked up the win. He allowed three runs on six hits in six innings, striking out seven against an all right-handed lineup.

“The whole point as a starting pitcher is to give yourself a chance to continue the game,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. “He’s progressively gotten better at not having the big, explosive innings. He allowed us to slowly and surely get to their bullpen and come from behind and win.”

Skubal had a plan going in, and he stuck with it.

“I threw a lot more changeups than I did sliders,” Skubal said. “I knew the changeup would be a huge pitch for me against this lineup, just being able to work down and expand the zone.”

Michael Fulmer earned his fifth save in six chances.

Adalberto Mondesi hit a home run in his first at-bat since returning from the injured list. Salvador Perez also connected for the Royals, hitting his 17th of the season.

“(Mondesi) is unbelievable,” Matheny said. “The first time he steps in the box, he blasts it.”

Greg Holland (2-2) gave up three runs while getting just one out.

Holland issued a four-pitch walk to the first batter he faced, Niko Goodrum, in the seventh and Castro homered to make it 3-all.

“The hitting coach said after he gets two strikes he likes to throw the breaking pitch,” Castro said. “I was just trying to battle and let my abilities do the work.”

Holland left after a one-out single by Robbie Grossman, and reliever Scott Barlow gave up a single to Akil Baddoo and threw a wild pitch that let the go-ahead run score.

The Tigers’ fifth run also scored on a wild pitch in the eighth and Detroit added a run in the ninth for a 6-3 lead.

Whit Merrifield hit an RBI double with two outs in the Royals ninth and Carlos Santana followed with a run-scoring single. Perez struck out to end the game.

Singer, who allowed one run on four hits, became the first Royals pitcher in five games not to surrender a run in the first inning when he worked around a one-out walk.

Mondesi hit a 445-foot homer in the second, giving the Royals their first lead in 46 innings.

Royals: SS Mondesi was activated from the 10-day IL on Tuesday, but he didn’t appear in the game. He was in the starting lineup Wednesday, batting fifth. Mondesi has been out since May 31 with a left hamstring strain. Matheny said the plan was to activate Mondesi for Wednesday’s game, but RHP Ronald Bolaños was placed on the IL, opening a spot a day earlier. Mondesi was in the on-deck circle as a pinch-hitter when the final out was made.

Tigers: Open a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. RHP Matt Manning will make his major league debut. Manning was 1-3 with an 8.07 ERA in seven starts with Triple-A Toledo. The Tigers have not won a season series with the Angels since 2010.

Royals: After an off-day Thursday, Kansas City will continue the homestand with the first of three games against the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. It is a familiar face with a new name now at the helm of the Hays High softball program. Wednesday afternoon, Athletic Director Lance Krannawitter introduced Abby Gillan as the new head softball coach. Gillan, formally Maska, was head coach from 2009 through 2015.&nbsp;

Her first tenure included a record of 101-54, the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Title, three 5A state softball tournament appearances and a fourth place state finish in 2011.

Gillan said she has no preconceived notions about the players who will join the program in 2022 as it has been seven years between head coaching stints. Her advice for potential players between now and next season? Hit the weight room. Gillan sees the weight room as the best way to prevent injuries and improve athleticism.&nbsp;

Twenty-six players were in attendance Wednesday with several others missing due to work and other prior commitments. Any player that missed the meeting or has an interest in softball is encouraged to check out the program. Her expectations are simple. Work hard. Integrity. Honor.

Gillan played softball for Hays High and Fort Hays State University. She was an assistant coach at Salina South for her first coaching experience before returning to Hays High. She taught sociology, American history and AP U.S. government this past school year.

Hays High introduces new softball coach

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Casey Mize turned in his eighth quality start in his last nine games, Miguel Cabrera got two more hits and the Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City 4-2 Tuesday night, the Royals’ fifth straight loss.

Mize (4-4) allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Gregory Soto pitched the ninth for his sixth save in as many chances.

“The quality is more important than the length,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. “Casey came out and had to battle. I think he got a little better as the game went along.

“He had to fight a little bit to find his rhythm. At the beginning of the day if you said he was going to pitch into the seventh and give up three runs you’d feel good about it.”

After the Tigers had to use nine pitchers in Monday’s game, Mize knew he had to go as deep as possible.

“Coming into today I knew that was really important,” Mize said. “That was definitely something I was thinking about. I was trying to be efficient.”

Cabrera, stuck in a slump for most of the season, doubled and singled to drive in one run and score another. He had three hits in Monday night’s win over the Royals.

Mike Minor (5-4) gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Royals have lost 10 of 11 and haven’t led at any point since beating Oakland six games ago.

“I felt we did a good job fighting our way back in,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “We got a little something going, with some good situational hitting. I know things are going to change. But right now, it’s just not happening.”

Cabrera put the Tigers on top in the first with an RBI single. He has 246 career hits against the Royals, his second most against any opponent (258, Cleveland).

Jonathan Schoop’s two-run homer in the third gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Mize helped the Royals get back in the game in the bottom of the third. Nicky Lopez and Whit Merrifield singled with one out, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.

Lopez scored on a groundout by Carlos Santana and Mize then hit Salvador Perez with a pitch and walked Jorge Soler, loading the bases. Mize’s second wild pitch scored Merrifield.

Cabrera doubled in the sixth and scored on Daz Cameron’s hit off reliever Kyle Zimmer.

The Royals cut the lead to one run in the seventh on Lopez’s bloop single.

Tigers: LHP Matthew Boyd was placed on the 10-day injured list with left-arm discomfort. He came out of Monday’s start in the third inning. ... Colo. – There was some Larks Magic Monday night in Colorado. Trailing 11-1 after three innings, the Larks rallied for an 18-16 win in 12 innings
over the Gameday Saints.

The
Larks (6-1, 3-1 RMBL) struck first with a run in the top of the second when Core Jackson’s
double scored Zach Henry. The Saints (3-3) answered with six runs in the bottom
of the inning then added five in the third for the 11-1 lead.

The
Larks started the comeback with a run in the fourth when another Core Jackson
double scored Leo Jiminian. They would add three runs in the top of the fifth on a Brady Evans home run and Palmer Hutchison two-run double to cut the gap
to 11-5.

The
Saints added two in the bottom of the fifth to expand their lead to 13-5 where it
would stay until the seventh when the Larks plated five. Zach Henry’s single
scored Cam Pehrson with the first run. Core Jackson’s third double of the game
drove in two. Grant Lung also doubled which drove in two to make it 13-10.

The
Saints answered with two in the bottom of the seventh to build their lead back

⚾ Comeback for the ages for the Larks in Colorado

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Detroit starter Matthew Boyd and reliever Alex Lange both exited with injuries, and the Tigers still ended a three-game losing streak, beating the Kansas City Royals 10-3 Monday night.

Willi Castro, Robbie Grossman and Niko Goodrum homered for Detroit. Miguel Cabrera got three hits and drove in two runs, with his RBI single keying a four-run first inning.

The Royals, who have not led since finishing off Thursday’s 6-1 victory in Oakland, lost their fourth in a row. They are a season-worst five games below .500.

Boyd departed in the third because of discomfort in his left arm. Lange left after recording just one out in the fifth with shoulder trouble.

“(Boyd) came into that inning and was throwing well,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. “After a few pitches he called us out. He said he felt a little something in his tricep."

Boyd told the team trainer that his arm had felt odd the whole inning.

“We immediately removed him from the game. We’re going to send him for some tests. It’s very disappointing on the night because he was throwing the ball well with probably the best fastball he’s had in the last month," Hinch said.

Hinch said he didn't know if Boyd would miss any time.

“I think Lange is going to end up on the injured list from the initial diagnosis,” Hinch said. “He’s had some shoulder issues. I didn’t even get out to the mound. By the time I got to the (foul) line, they were already walking off.”

Royals starter Brad Keller (6-6) struggled throughout, allowing six earned runs and eight hits in five innings.

“I think he’s trying to overdo it a little bit,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He feels good. Sometimes when he tries to bump up his fastball he gets too much movement.”

Keller has struggled in the first inning all season. Following three earned runs in the first on Monday, his ERA in the first inning is now 9.64. Keller didn’t record an out until his 22nd pitch when he struck out Eric Haase.

Keller hit Grossman with his first pitch of the game, Harold Castro singled and Jonathan Schoop reached on an error that rolled through the legs of third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez, allowing a run to score. Cabrera added an RBI single, and Goodrum hit a two-run single.

After giving up back-to-back, one-out singles in the third to Whit Merrifield and Carlos Santana, Boyd was pulled from the game. He was relieved by Joe Jimenez (2-0), who struck out Salvador Perez and got Jorge Soler to pop out.

Castro hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Goodrum connected in the eighth, and Grossman homered in the ninth.

The Royals scored a run in the fourth on a two-out double by Hanser Alberto that drove in Edward Olivares, who was called up to replace the injured Andrew Benintendi.

The Royals got runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but left the bases loaded in both.

Tigers: C Grayson Greiner began an injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. He went 1 for 3 with a walk and scored a run. He has been out since May 12 with a strained left hamstring.

Royals: SS Adalberto Mondesi was eligible to come off the 10-day injured list Monday, but he was not ready, according to Matheny. Mondesi came out of the game May 31 with a left hamstring strain.

Tigers: RHP Michael Fulmer was reinstated from the IL. He is 4-3 with a 3.34 ERA in 20 appearances (four starts). Since being moved to the closer’s role, he’s converted four out of five save opportunities.

Royals: Benintendi was placed on the IL with a right rib fracture. Matheny said Benintendi was injured making a throw from the warning track Sunday in Oakland. OF Edward Olivares was recalled.

⚾ Keller falls behind early, Royals fail to capitalize on offense in loss to Tigers

John Jacobs was one of the top hitters for the Hays Larks when he played for them in the late 1950s. Just imagine what the natural left-handed swinger could have done if he hadn’t hit right-handed.

	While playing ball in the streets as a kid with his friends, his teammates pressured Jacobs to swing from the right side.

	“The guys in the neighborhood made me a right-handed hitter,” Jacobs said. “They didn’t have enough players to cover right field and didn’t want a left-handed batter.”

	St. Joseph’s Military Academy in Hays didn’t have a baseball team when Jacobs was in high school, but he did play American Legion ball in the summer. In the summer of 1955, after Jacobs’ junior year, he played a little first base for the Larks. He was the team’s full-time first baseman for the next three years, batting .355 in 1956, .358 in 1957 and .421 in 1958.

	Jacobs, who graduated from high school in 1956, went to Arizona State for college. He walked on that first semester and promptly earned a baseball scholarship. He played first base for the Sun Devils all four years before signing with the San Francisco Giants.

	Late in his senior year at Arizona State, Jacobs was beaned by a pitch just below his left eye, suffering four fractures in his cheek bone. Although he was nervous at the plate, Jacobs still played first base for a year in the minors before switching to pitching the next season.

	“Every time they would throw a ball around my face, I wouldn’t move,” Jacobs said. “As a hitter, you just love to bat. I became gun shy.

	“To hit, you’ve got to be aggressive,” he added. “Once you lose the aggressiveness, it’s not going to work out.”

	Jacobs came back to play that second year with the Giants organization so he could get the second half of his signing bonus. After six weeks, he gave up pro ball and returned to Hays, where he played one final season for the Larks.

To protect his eye, Jacobs switched from batting right-handed to his more natural left-handed swing that summer of 1961, and hit .455, second-best in Larks history. The only Lark with a better season at the plate was Vic Higgins, who batted .458 in 1957.

	The thought has crossed Jacobs’ mind of what might have happened if those neighborhood kids hadn’t made him switch sides at the plate.

	“I did wonder about that many times,” Jacobs said. “You face a lot of right-handed pitchers, and since I wasn’t a speedy person I was a couple steps closer to first base.”

	Jacobs said he enjoyed playing for those Larks teams back in the day, and in his first full-time season he had a game for the record books. On July 31, 1956, the 18-year-old Jacobs hit a grand slam, drove in 10 runs and scored five times against Ness City, in a game played at La Crosse. The newspaper headline the next day proclaimed Jacobs had accounted for 15 runs in the 27-7 victory.

	“It was just one of those days when everything goes right,” Jacobs said.

	Back then, as is the case now, fans flocked to the games.

	“They had a huge crowd in the stands,” said Jacobs, adding fans would park cars down the foul lines to get a good view. “When I was a kid growing up, there was no television to watch. They came out to watch the Larks.”

	Competition was fierce, too, but it was friendly.

	“Catharine and Munjor, they wanted to beat the big town,” Jacobs said. “After the game, there was beer in the Catharine dugout, and they would want you to come over and drink beer with them.”

	Jacobs, 83, now lives in Tempe, Ariz. He was inducted into the Arizona State Hall of Fame in 2013. He and his wife, Joan, have one son, Jeff, who works for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jacobs can’t make it back for the 75th anniversary weekend, but will be there in spirit.

	“Such great memories of the Larks,” Jacobs said.

⚾ Junior Legion beats Seniors, falls in title game in Missouri

DENVER - Core Jackson and Grant Schmidt both
homer and Jose Velazquez pitched six hitless innings in relief to help the Hays
Larks to a 5-1 win over the Colorado Sox Sunday afternoon. The Larks score two
runs in the fifth inning then added two more in the ninth as they bounced back
from their first loss of the season the night before.

Grant
Schmidt tied the game with a home run to left in the second. Zach Henry gave
them the lead for good with a two-out double in the fifth. Brock Lummus
followed with a single which scored Henry to make the score 3-1. 

Jackson

OAKLAND, Calif. — Oakland's slugging Matts have a running joke how one is usually hot when the other's not.

Lately, both are driving the ball — and they combined for three home runs Sunday.

Matt Olson homered twice and Matt Olson also connected, Chris Bassitt escaped a scary line drive to win his seventh straight decision, and the Oakland Athletics powered past the Kansas City Royals 6-3.

Olson hit solo shots in the third and fifth for his second two-homer game this season and 10th of his career. Chapman homered in the first to back Bassitt (7-2).

“We actually joke about it a pretty good bit that when one's hitting the other one never does,” Olson said. "It's nice to get a few games where we're both doing stuff. We honestly don't actually put weight into that but it seems like it sometimes. It’s definitely good to sync up a little bit."

Elvis Andrus added an RBI double in the second and Mark Canha hit a run-scoring single two batters later against Kris Bubic (1-2).

Bassitt had a scare in the second when Nicky Lopez's screaming liner glanced off his back side for an RBI single. The pitcher, clearly shaken, went face down in the grass with his arms spread for several moments as athletic trainer Nick Paparesta and manager Bob Melvin scurried to check on him, but Bassitt stayed in the game.

“It hit me in the perfect spot. That may sound weird,” Bassitt said. “It didn’t affect me at all.”

The hit by Lopez loaded the bases, but Bassitt regrouped and got Whit Merrifield on a called third strike to escape further damage.

inning to tie then scored another in the ninth for a 9-8 walk-off win over the Hays
Larks Saturday at De’Evelyn High School.&nbsp;
The Larks outhit the Sox 19-12 but stranded 12 baserunners in their first
loss of the season.

Hays (4-1, 1-1 RMBL) scored six in the fourth and had an 8-3
lead after six innings before the Sox started their comeback

The Sox (1-2, 1-2 RMBL) used a leadoff walk followed by a
single to start the ninth. A sac bunt advanced the runners to second and third.
Following a groundout, Maxim Fullerton singles to right scoring Nolan Ackerman
with the winning run.

Trey Riggs (0-1) allowed one run on three hits with a
strikeout and walk over the final 1 1/3 innings and suffered the loss. Starter
Luuk ter Beek gave up three runs (two earned) on seven this with five
strikeouts and no walks over 5 2/3 innings. Max Casellucci surrendered five
runs on wo this with four walks and a strikeout over 1 2/3 innings.

Grant Schmidt hit a solo homer and Core Jackson added a
two-run shot in the Larks six-run fourth. Wyatt Divis added a two-run homer in the
sixth to give the Larks a five-run lead.

Divis went 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Palmer Hutchison added
three hits while Grant Lung, Cam Pehrson, Grant Schmidt and Sam Crowell add had

Saturday to grab the No. 1 seed for Sundayu's bracket play at the Hot Summer Night’s Tournament outside Kansas City. The Eagles defeated
the KC Hitmen 3-2 then knocked off Team Warstic KC Crow 10-2.

six innings because of time limit. Schmidt struck out three and walked one.Garrett Wellbrock put the Eagles up 2-1 with a two-run single in the third.&nbsp; After the Hitmen tied it in the top of the fourth,
Schmidt put Hays ahead for good with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.Brady Kreutzer had two of the Eagles four hit with Wellbrock
and Ben Krannawitter providing the others.Brady Kreutzer’s bases-loaded triple drove in three to
highlight the Eagles seven-run second in the nightcap against Team Warstic.
Kreutzer, Josh Haynes and Brandon Karlin all had two hits. Karlin
drove in two runs.Starter Garrett Wellbrock (2-0), who taken out in the second
after 27 pitches, scattered three hits and didn’t allow any runs. Wellbrock,
Brady Kreutzer and Jack Fields were all held under 31 pitches so they would be
available to throw in Sunday’s games. The Eagles (5-1) will play the Hays Eagles Junior American
Legion in bracket play Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The Junior Eagles lost 5-0 to the Hitmen
and 4-0 to Team Warstic Saturday.
