ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The trade began to hit Von Miller as he toddled past the photo gallery of great moments that decorate the Denver Broncos headquarters.

The featured shot is the one of him knocking the ball and, in effect, the Lombardi Trophy, from Cam Newton's grasp five years and nine months ago.

"Always have Super Bowl 50,” a choked-up Miller said on a gray Monday morning as snowflakes danced into the black Cadillac Escalade's open back window and melted on his tie-dye hoodie.

“Seeing the pictures as I was walking out made me tear up.”

Miller is no longer the face of the franchise in Denver.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/pgraham34/status/1455235920869789698?s=20">loquacious linebacker</a>&nbsp;is headed West to join Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey with the Los Angeles Rams in a trade that surprised him.

“It’s all kind of new,” said Miller, who insisted he didn't ask out. “I’m on my way to L.A.”

“Great team. Been a huge fan of Aaron Donald for a long time,” Miller said. “They’ve got a great defense. Jalen Ramsey, Leonard Floyd, all these guys. I’m excited."

Two people familiar with the deal that wasn't immediately announced by either team told The Associated Press that the Rams are sending the Broncos second- and third-round picks in the 2022 draft for the perennial Pro Bowler.

The Broncos also are picking up $9 million of the $9.722 million left on his contract.

Miller’s trophy case includes his Super Bowl 50 MVP award for leading Denver to a 24-10 win over heavily favored Carolina following the 2015 season and 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honor.

He’s an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, seven-time AP All-Pro and a member of the league’s 2010s All-Decade team. And he’s the Broncos’ franchise leader with 110½ sacks in the regular season and has another 6½ in the playoffs.

“It's hard to put the emotions into words," Miller said. "It's always tough whenever you leave. I love all my fans. I love Broncos country. When I said Broncos for life, I meant that. It was an honor and a privilege to play here.

“John Elway picked me. It's life changing. Ever since then, been able to play with Peyton Manning, DeMarcus Ware, Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins, Tim Tebow. It's still kind of hard to put into words.”

And it looks as though the Broncos (4-4) are folding their hand.

With Miller watching from the sideline because of a sprained ankle he said should be fine by next weekend, the Broncos edged Washington&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-denver-broncos-justin-simmons-washington-football-team-95941260d6fc256c6073d685996f424e">17-10</a>&nbsp;Sunday, narrowly avoiding their first winless October since 1967.

But it took two defensive stops in the final minute because the Broncos bungled their last possession following safety Justin Simmons' seemingly game-sealing end zone interception with 49 seconds left.

In between Teddy Bridgewater inexplicably throwing an incompletion to stop the clock with 32 seconds left and saving Washington a timeout, the Broncos fumbled twice, losing the second one at their 24 with 21 seconds remaining.

That served as a fitting farewell to Miller, who never got back to the playoffs with Denver after leading their Super Bowl parade.

Plagued by instability at quarterback, unimaginative offensive play-calling, draft busts and free-agent flops, the once-proud franchise is mired in one of its longest runs of mediocrity since the 1960s.

“This team, they’re going to start winning soon,” Miller said. “I wanted to be a part of it to fix it.”

Miller joins a Rams team that's tied with the Packers and Cardinals for the NFL's best record at 7-1. But the path to the Super Bowl — at the Rams' home, SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California — appears much rockier in the NFC with Dallas at 6-1 and defending champion Tampa Bay sitting at 6-2.

Only one team in the AFC has more than five wins: Tennessee is 6-2 but just lost cornerstone Derrick Henry to a foot injury. The Rams host the Titans on Sunday night.

Miller expects to step right into the Rams lineup after missing his final Broncos game with a sprained left ankle.

Miller, who's in the final year of his contract, was sidelined all of last year with a dislocated ankle tendon. He had a splashy comeback, winning the AFC Defensive Player of the Month honor in September.

Despite a quiet October — save for guaranteeing he was going to destroy Cleveland's offensive line — Miller was still considered a gem for contenders as Tuesday's trade deadline approached.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - TCU and football coach Gary Patterson mutually agreed to immediately part ways Sunday before the completion of his 21st season. The announcement came a day after the Horned Frogs (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) lost 31-12 at Kansas State, Patterson's alma mater. It was their fifth loss in six games, and they are 21-22 overall since the start of 2018. Patterson leaves TCU with a 181-79 record, including an undefeated 13-0 season in 2010 that was capped by a Rose Bowl victory. He was the second-longest tenured FBS coach, trailing only Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who is in his 23rd season.

TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati said he and school chancellor Victor Boschini met Sunday with the 61-year-old Patterson “and mutually agreed that the time has come for a new voice and leadership" in the football program. While responding in a text message that it was “correct” that he had mutually agreed to depart, Patterson had no other response to the AP on Sunday night.

“We asked him to continue on as our head coach for the remainder of the season, and take on a different role in 2022, but he believed it was in the team’s and TCU’s best interests to begin the transition immediately,” Donati said. “We respect Coach Patterson’s perspective and will move forward in that direction.” 

Former Minnesota and Emporia State coach Jerry Kill, who was the best man in Patterson's wedding and on his staff in an off-field role as a special assistant in charge of the offense, will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The Frogs, who have four games left in the regular season, host 14th-ranked Baylor on Saturday. 

Kill was Minnesota’s coach from 2011-15 before seizures caused by his epilepsy forced him to step down. He was offensive coordinator at Rutgers in 2017, but that was his last time in an on-field coaching role. He joined Patterson at TCU in February 2020, after a similar off-field role at Virginia Tech. 

Patterson was the second Big 12 head coach let go within a week. Texas Tech fired third-year coach Matt Wells last Monday, also after a loss to Kansas State. 

TCU's only Big 12 win was 52-31 at Texas Tech on Oct. 9. A week after that, the Horned Frogs lost 52-31 to fourth-ranked Oklahoma.

While Patterson, who is a native or Rozel and attended Dodge City Community College before transferring to Kansas State, is a defensive-minded coach, the Horned Frogs have had one of the Big 12's worst defenses this season. They ranked eighth in the 10-team league in scoring defense (31.5 points per game), and are ninth in total defense, giving up 443.3 yards per game. 

Patterson was TCU's defensive coordinator for three seasons on Dennis Franchione's staff. He was promoted to head coach when Franchione left to become Alabama's coach at the end of the 2000 regular season. 

The Frogs won or shared championships in Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference under Patterson before becoming a Power Five team with their move to the Big 12 in 2012. They shared the Big 12 title in 2014, when TCU and Baylor were co-champions and were the first teams left out of the initial four-team College Football Playoff. 

“The story of Gary Patterson and the rise in the fortunes of the TCU football program over the last 20 years is clearly one of the most remarkable in the history of college football," Donati said. “We are grateful to Gary and Kelsey Patterson and appreciate everything they have meant to TCU and the Fort Worth community. Under his leadership, TCU has become a nationally recognized brand name in football and in collegiate athletics." 

TCU had 11 seasons with at least 10 wins under Patterson, the last in 2017 when they were ninth in the final AP Top 25 poll after going 11-3 and beating Stanford in the Alamo Bowl. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - TCU and football coach Gary Patterson mutually agreed to immediately part ways Sunday before the completion of his 21st season. The announcement came a day after the Horned Frogs (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) lost 31-12 at Kansas State, Patterson's alma mater. It was their fifth loss in six games, and they are 21-22 overall since the start of 2018. Patterson leaves TCU with a 181-79 record, including an undefeated 13-0 season in 2010 that was capped by a Rose Bowl victory. He was the second-longest tenured FBS coach, trailing only Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who is in his 23rd season.TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati said he and school chancellor Victor Boschini met Sunday with the 61-year-old Patterson “and mutually agreed that the time has come for a new voice and leadership" in the football program. While responding in a text message that it was “correct” that he had mutually agreed to depart, Patterson had no other response to the AP on Sunday night.“We asked him to continue on as our head coach for the remainder of the season, and take on a different role in 2022, but he believed it was in the team’s and TCU’s best interests to begin the transition immediately,” Donati said. “We respect Coach Patterson’s perspective and will move forward in that direction.” Former Minnesota and Emporia State coach Jerry Kill, who was the best man in Patterson's wedding and on his staff in an off-field role as a special assistant in charge of the offense, will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The Frogs, who have four games left in the regular season, host 14th-ranked Baylor on Saturday. Kill was Minnesota’s coach from 2011-15 before seizures caused by his epilepsy forced him to step down. He was offensive coordinator at Rutgers in 2017, but that was his last time in an on-field coaching role. He joined Patterson at TCU in February 2020, after a similar off-field role at Virginia Tech. Patterson was the second Big 12 head coach let go within a week. Texas Tech fired third-year coach Matt Wells last Monday, also after a loss to Kansas State. They ranked eighth in the 10-team league in scoring defense (31.5 points per game), and are ninth in total defense, giving up 443.3 yards per game. Patterson was TCU's defensive coordinator for three seasons on Dennis Franchione's staff. He was promoted to head coach when Franchione left to become Alabama's coach at the end of the 2000 regular season. The Frogs won or shared championships in Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference under Patterson before becoming a Power Five team with their move to the Big 12 in 2012. They shared the Big 12 title in 2014, when TCU and Baylor were co-champions and were the first teams left out of the initial four-team College Football Playoff. “The story of Gary Patterson and the rise in the fortunes of the TCU football program over the last 20 years is clearly one of the most remarkable in the history of college football," Donati said. “We are grateful to Gary and Kelsey Patterson and appreciate everything they have meant to TCU and the Fort Worth community. DENVER (AP) — Justin Simmons and Denver's defense held firm after a fumble gave Washington the ball back, and the Broncos blocked two field goals on their way to a 17-10 win Sunday that stopped a four-game slide.

Melvin Gordon III caught a touchdown pass and ran for the go-ahead score from 7 yards out with 4:31 remaining. He also fumbled with 21 seconds to go, giving Washington the ball at the Denver 24-yard line.

The defense forced Taylor Heinicke to throw the ball out of the back of the end zone on the last play of the game.

It looked as if the game was over when Simmons picked off a desperation Heinicke pass in the end zone with 37 seconds left. It was Simmons' second interception of the game.

But Gordon's fumble gave Washington one more chance.

The last defensive stand prevented the first winless October for the Broncos (4-4) since 1967.

Dre’Mont Jones and Shelby Harris each blocked a field-goal attempt from Chris Blewitt. Jones got his hand on a 47-yard try in the fourth, and Harris batted down a 45-yarder from Blewitt in the second.

For large chunks of time, it was almost a game of who didn’t want to win — with plenty of missed opportunities, field goals and mistakes. Washington (2-6) failed to convert on a fourth down early in the game, had Bobby McCain drop an interception in his hands and allowed five sacks to a defense missing Von Miller.

Brandon McManus missed a 53-yard field goal for Denver with 10:57 remaining. He was 13 of 13 before pushing his attempt just right.

Gordon energized a sparse crowd on a 15-yard TD catch from Teddy Bridgewater just before halftime. There were an announced 11,755 no-shows on a cool day in the Mile High City. That despite tickets being available for as low as $25.

Washington tied it at 10 late in the third on Heinicke's 20-yard touchdown throw to DeAndre Carter. It was Washington's fourth straight loss.

The biggest cheer of the afternoon was for Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning, who was inducted into the team’s Ring of Fame at halftime. Manning even removed his orange jacket and put on his No. 18 jersey one last time. He lofted a perfect 30-yard-ish strike to receiver Brandon Stokley in the end zone.

Miller was sidelined by an ankle injury. The team’s career sacks leader walked the sideline in a jacket.

Bridgewater was helped by the return of receiver Jerry Jeudy (ankle) and tight end Albert Okwuegbunam (hamstring). Jeudy had four catches for 39 yards, including a big grab on the go-ahead drive.

Manning had his Ring of Fame pillar unveiled in a pregame ceremony in front of fans outside the stadium. At halftime, there was a ceremony to honor his inclusion into the team’s Ring of Fame.

He signed off on the authenticity of his new bronze bust — right down to the detail of his forehead.

“The forehead is always the key thing. You want to you want it to be accurate, right?” cracked Manning. “So there’s a lot of space there.”

Manning said he hasn't had any serious conversations with anyone about becoming part of an ownership/management group to make a potential bid&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-nfl-business-denver-broncos-a8ae60145acdd49f8c3f1a2a9f64e272" target="_blank">on the Broncos</a>.

⚽ Tiger women extend season with home win over Washburn

HAYS - The Fort Hays State football team blew a 12-point lead with six minutes to play and lost to Emporia State 15-12 Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field. The Tigers (4-5) held the lead for nearly 43 minutes but gave up touchdowns on the Hornets (5-4) final two possessions.

The Tigers led 3-0 at halftime on a Parker Janky 25-yard field goal early in the second quarter. 

After seven consecutive possessions by each team that failed to cross mid-field, the Tigers were finally able to move the ball into the Hornets side of the field but had to settle for a 21-yard Janky field goal with 20-second to play in the third.

FHSU went 81 yards in 15 plays and ate almost seven and-a-half minutes off the clock on their first fourth quarter possession. Adrian Soto took a pitch from Chance Fuller and scored on a seven-yard run to push the lead to 12-0 with 6:20 to play. Soto was kept short of the goal line on the two-point conversion.

ESU answered with a 75-yard s scoring drive capped off by a&nbsp;Canaan Brooks 23-yard touchdown run up the middle with 3:53 to play.

The Tigers gained only four yards and went three-and-out on the next possession which ended with a 25-yard punt.

Starting at their own 46 yard line, the Hornets took advantage of a roughing the passer and pass interference penalties to move the ball inside the FHSU 10.&nbsp;Brooks then caught a pass in the left flat, broke out of a tackle then raced across the field beating everyone to the endzone. The two point conversion pushed the lead to three.

The Tigers moved the ball to the ESU 40, but a tipped pass on fourth and four sealed the win for the Hornets.

Adrian Soto had another big day for the Tigers with 94 rushing and 38 receiving yards and 201 all-purpose yards. Keylan Chapman rushed for 79 yards. Chance Fuller finished with 148 passing yards, completing 13-of-28 attempts. Myles Menges led the Tiger defense with 12 tackles, followed by Tyler Cummings with&nbsp;11 and John Johnson&nbsp;10. Jordan Starks&nbsp;had his second interception in the endzone late in the second quarter to keep the Hornets scoreless in the first half. Emporia State's Braden Gleason threw for 170 yards, completing 27-of-41 attempts. Corey Thomas was his top receiver with seven catches for 60 yards. Cade Harelson and Dawson Hammes led the Hornets with 12 tackles each, while Gee Stanley had 10. Fort Hays State will return to action next Saturday at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I'm sure there's things he can continue to improve and get better at,” Klieman said with a slight grin and shake of his head, before adding quickly: “But you have that special day, that's pretty awesome.”

Anudike-Uzomah, whose safety last week against Texas Tech jumpstarted the Wildcats’ comeback win, also forced two fumbles against TCU while shattering the school record of four sacks set by Chris Johnson against Missouri in 2000.

“Stay hungry and keep doing what I’m doing in practice, honestly,” Anudike-Uzomah said. “This is one game. It’s not the end of the season. I need to work hard and work on technique so I can pile on and pile on.”

Only three other players in the NCAA's highest division have had six sacks, including longtime NFL star Elvis Dumervil.

“How could you not be excited for the kid?" Klieman said. “He set all sorts of records today, and every single one of them was critical play in a tight ballgame. Felix earns it. He works his tail off every single day.”

Skylar Thompson threw for 242 yards and a touchdown while also running for a score, and Deuce Vaughn added 109 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, as the Wildcats (5-3, 2-3 Big 12) beat TCU (3-5, 1-4) for the third straight time.

The Horned Frogs' Max Duggan was just 9 of 13 for 73 yards before getting benched in the third quarter, and Chandler Morris was 9 of 14 for 111 yards in relief. Kendre Miller ran for 102 yards, but most of it came on a 61-yard scamper.

“Max hasn't been able to do a lot of stuff in practice. We just finally, running-wise, needed someone that could get out and get going,” TCU coach Gary Patterson said. “That's what we needed.”

Tempers flared midway through the third quarter when the Horned Frogs' Josh Foster delivered a big hit on Thompson as he stepped out of bounds. Players from both teams joined the melee as TCU coaches tried in vain to intervene; two of their players and one from Kansas State were ejected for throwing punches.

The Horned Frogs' frustration probably stemmed from the fact that they actually drove inside the Kansas State 5 on three occasions — two times in the first half and one in the second — and came away with a total of three points.

The first drive reached the Kansas State 3 before Duggan threw a pass that went for a 4-yard loss and TCU had to kick a field goal. The second made the Kansas State 2 but, after three runs gained a single yard, it ended when Duggan threw his fourth-down pass out of the back of the end zone for an incompletion.

The silver lining for the Horned Frogs? They stuffed Vaughn on the next play for a safety.

Otherwise, the first half belonged to the Wildcats, who never punted in five possessions — though Thompson did throw a pick and the safety ended another. The other three ended with Thompson's TD run and Vaughn's two scores.

Vaughn's second came after the Wildcats marched 88 yards in the closing minutes of the first half. The big play was a 37-yard pass to Phillip Brooks that was initially ruled a touchdown, but officials spotted the ball just outside the goal line after a review. The change merely gave Vaughn a chance to somersault over the pile for a highlight-reel score.

The Horned Frogs marched deep into Kansas State territory again early in the second half. But an end-around pass on third down was incomplete and Anudike-Uzomah's fourth-down strip-sack of Morris was grabbed by the Wildcats' Daniel Green in the end zone for a touchback.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs scored two more defensive
touchdowns as they picked up their first playoff win since 2002 Friday night in
a 42-18 win over Minneapolis.

It took the Monarchs (7-2) a little bit to get going on Friday night.
Their only two drives in the first quarter showed promise, both reached inside
the Lions’ 40-yardline, but penalties doomed the first one and an inception at
the goal line ended the second one.

With the game tied at zero the Monarchs defense would get
the scoring started. 

After the TMP interception Kenton Ginther tipped a pass at
the 20-yardline and hauled it in and returned the interception for a touchdown,
the first of his career. Ginther also caught the two-point conversion pass to
put TMP up 8-0.

Three plays later Jace Wentling hauled in his sixth career
touchdown and returned for a touchdown, the third of his career on defense, to
put the Monarchs up 15-0 with just over 3:30 to play in the first quarter.

In the last two years TMP has scored eight touchdowns on defense, four this year.

After the defense led the way in the first quarter, the
offense found its rhythm in the second quarter.

Midway through the second-quarter quarterback Kade Harris
hooked up with Mark Rack for a 57-yard touchdown pass giving TMP a 22-0 lead.

A little more than five and a half minutes later the Monarchs
scored again through the air. This time it was Wentling turning in a shallow
crossing route into a 41-yard touchdown putting TMP up 29-0.

The first half came to a bizarre end with a Minneapolis (4-5) player
was called for a person foul and ejected for targeting and as the teams were
leaving the field the Minneapolis coach got an unsportsmanlike penalty. 

As a result of the penalties TMP kicked off from the
Minneapolis 30-yardline.

Minneapolis was forced to punt after starting deep in their
own territory.

The Monarchs wasted no time to get the offense going in the
second half when Andrew Schwartz scored from 19 yards out to put TMP up 36-0
with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter.

Griffin Schumacher added a 19-yard touchdown less than a
minute into the fourth quarter to put up 42-0.

In the second-half of the fourth quarter Minneapolis was
able to score three touchdowns, two throw the air and one on the ground after
the game was well in hand.

Harris was three-for-four for 106 yards passing with two
touchdowns and an interception.

TMP will travel to Hoisington next Friday for a second-round
matchup with the Cardinals.

own territory.The Monarchs wasted no time to get the offense going in the
second half when Andrew Schwartz scored from 19 yards out to put TMP up 36-0
with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter.Griffin Schumacher added a 19-yard touchdown less than a
minute into the fourth quarter to put up 42-0.In the second-half of the fourth quarter Minneapolis was
able to score three touchdowns, two throw the air and one on the ground after

Fort Hays State wraps up the regular season by hosting Washburn for Senior Day on Sunday (Oct. 31) with kickoff scheduled for 1 pm. The Tigers can qualify for the MIAA Tournament, potentially as the No. 7 or No. 8 seed, but must avoid finishing in a tie for eighth with Rogers State.
