COLBY – The La Crosse boys qualified three relay teams and finished
second at Friday’s Winona-Triplains regional meet in Colby. Quinter won the team
title with 77 points, the Leopards had 69.5. Osborne finished third with 63.

Osborne won the girls’ team title with 60 points, Rawlins

Colby Stull led the La Crosse boys, qualifying in four
events. He finished second in the 100 meters and third in the 200 and was on the
second place 4x100 meter relay and the third place 4x400 relay. Stull was joined
on the 4x100 relay with Connor Schurr, Dayton Lantz and Bradi Schmidt. The
4x400 relay included Gage Burk, Will Ruess and Chris Schlueter. 

The Leopards 4x800 relay team of Do Castaneira, Will Rues,
Tristo Nelson and Kolton Maneth also finished second.

Gage Burk won two gold medals, winning both the high jump
and long jump.

Brennan Steinert won the 300 meter hurdles and was second in
the 100 hurdles and was the only girl to qualify for La Crosse.

Victoria’s Macy Hammerschmidt qualified in two events. She
won the long jump and finished second in the 100 meter dash where she was 1/100
th of a second behind Michaela Rippe of Rawlins County. The Knights Callie Lane
qualified in the 300 hurdles where she finished fourth.

Tanis Brungardt placed second in the shot put and is the
only boy from Victoria to qualify for state.

After three successful seasons, Hays High boys basketball
coach Alex Hutchins is leaving. Hutchins was named the new head coach at Washburn Rural Thursday, pending board of education approval.

Hutchins has coached at Hays High the past four seasons, the
first as the head girls’ coach and the last three as the head boys coach. His
boys teams went 59-9 with three Western Athletic Conference titles and two
state tournament appearances.

The Scott City native was named the WAC Coach of the Year twice.

Prior to moving to Hays, Hutchins was the head boys coach in Minneapolis and Elizabeth, Colo.

Hutchins will take over his new coaching duties with the
Junior Blues this summer and teach physical education when the new school year
begins.

SALINA – The
Ellis baseball team defeated Canton-Galva 4-2 to advance to Thursday night’s
2-1A regional title game at Salina’s James Matson Field, but the Railers lost
to top-seed Little River 10-3 in the championship game.

The Railers
end their season with a 13-7. 

Game 1:
Ellis 4, Canton-Galva 2

Easton
Burton’s double with two outs in the second drove in Caleb Noble with the
go-ahead run and what proved to be winning run. 

The Railers
scored two in the first on a groundout and a wild pitch only to see the Eagles
answer with two in the top of the second.

Burton
picked up the complete game victory allowing two runs on eight hits with nine
strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2:
Little River 10, Ellis 3 
Ellis led 3-2 in the fifth, but the Redskins scored seven runs in the bottom of
the inning. The Redskins using two walks, three hit batters, three singles and
a double to blow the game open.

Ellis took
the early lead with a run in the first on Jarret Mader’s triple which scored
Easton Burton who opened the game with a single.

The Railers added
two more runs in the third on Mader’s two-run single to push their lead to 3-1.

⚾ Railers come up short in regional final

PHILLIPSBURG – The TMP-Marian girls qualified four
individuals and one relay, the boys qualified two individuals and a relay to
next week’s 3A state track and field meet.

The Monarch girls finished in fourth place at Thursday’s
Phillipsburg 3A regional while the boys finished seventh. Smoky Valley won the
girls team title and Southeast of Saline the boys.

Senior Kassidi Yost led the Monarch girls, qualifying in
three events. Yost won the high jump, was on the third-place 4x100 meter relay
team and finished fourth in the 200 meters. 

Shalee Gottschalk and Emma Basgall both qualified in two
events. Gottschalk won the 100 meter hurdles, Basgall finished third in the
long jump. Both are also on the 4x100 relay.

Tessa Wentling was TMP’s other state qualifier after a second
place finish in the high jump.

Kade Harris qualified in four events for the TMP boys. He finished
third in the 100 meters and fourth in the 200 and long jump and was on the second
place 4x100 meter relay team.

Jace Wentling was also on the relay and finished second in
the long jump and fourth in the triple jump to qualify in three events.

come to an end in the regional finals Thursday, losing 3-0 to Andover.

The Indians finish their season 13-4. The Trojans improve to
15-3 and advance to next week’s 5A state quarterfinals where they will play
Goddard-Eisenhower.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Robert homered and drove in four runs as the Chicago White Sox rallied past the Kansas City Royals 7-4 Thursday to win the five-game series.

Robert delivered a pair of RBI singles before hitting a two-run homer into the left field stands in the eighth. His sixth home run of the season capped Chicago’s sixth come-from-behind win.

“I was trying to not strike out,” Robert said. “I was just trying to put the ball in play. I was expecting a fastball and he just made a mistake and I took advantage of it.”

Pinch-hitter Adam Engel gave the White Sox their first lead with an RBI single in the seventh off Gabe Speier (0-1) that broke a 4-all tie.

“Guys at first and third, I was already in a good situation there,” Engel said. “Just had to put the ball in play and keep it up the middle there the best that I can. In order to do that I just looked for a pitch over the plate and tried not do too much.”

Tim Anderson had two hits, two walks, two RBIs, and stole two bases, recording his 10th multi-hit outing in his last 18 games.

“I was just trying to get a run in and get that egg off the board,” Anderson said of stealing second and third ahead of Robert’s first RBI single, opening the White Sox scoring in the third. “I was being myself, playing my game, and having fun while doing it. Just putting us in the best position to be successful.”

Said Chicago manager Tony La Russa: “He’s very special. He’s as special as our fans think he is. The more people around the country that know it, the better.”

Chicago took three of five from the Royals. It was the first five-game series at Kauffman Stadium since Chicago also won three of five in April 2018.

Bennett Sousa (2-0) earned the victory as four Chicago relievers held Kansas City scoreless over the final four innings. Liam Hendriks worked around a pair of singles for his 12th save.

Hunter Dozier had three hits and drove in three runs for the Royals. He had a two-run homer in the first and an RBI single in the third.

Kansas City scored in each of the first three innings against Vince Velasquez, recording an extra-base hit in each frame. He went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits, fanning three.

“It seemed like my stuff was working very well today, but they were just guessing right,” Velasquez said. “Dozier was hunting fastballs the whole time. I could have been a bit better with executing fastballs up at the top of the zone. I’m not really happy with the outing.”

Royals starter Carlos Hernández struggled with his control, walking five and allowing five hits in three-plus innings.

“(Hernández’s) tempo was a little bit slow,” Royals catcher Sebastian Rivero said. “He was trying to think on too many things at one time. He was not feeling the ball. He couldn’t grip it the way he wanted to. The ball wasn’t doing what he wanted.”

Chicago loaded the bases on consecutive hits to start the fourth before Anderson hit a two-run single, driving Hernández from the mound.

Royals OF Michael A. Taylor was placed on the COVID-19-related injured list.

The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball team is headed back to the 3A state tournament after picking up a pair of regional wins Wednesday in Great Bend.

Championship game: TMP 12, Larned 3 After a little bit of a slow start the TMP offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth inning, exploding for seven runs on their way to a 12-3 win over Larned in the 3A regional championship game.

For the third straight game the Monarchs scored two runs in the first innings thanks to an RBI single by Jace Wentling and an error.

Wentling, who struck out the side in the first, struggled in the second inning allowing Larned to come back at tie the game at two. They took advantage of a hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks in the inning.

A bases loaded balk by the Larned started scored the Monarchs third run of the game in the second inning. But Larned again had answer tying the game at three in the top of the third.

The big inning came in the bottom of the fifth for TMP. The Monarchs sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven runs to take a 10-3 lead.

In the inning the Monarchs took advantage of four walking, that including Garrett Feauto's bases loaded walk to put TMP up 4-3.

Chet Irvin followed the Feauto walk with a pinch-hit two-run single putting TMP up 6-3.&nbsp;

Joey Mindrup singled in a run and then Griffin Schumacher plated two more with singe to left putting TMP up 9-3.

Schumacher scored the 10th TMP run on a throwing error by the catcher for a 10-3 TMP lead.

The Monarchs added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 12-3.

Jace Wentling got the win on the mound for the Monarchs as he improved to 3-3. He allowed just one hit and two earned runs over five innings for the win. He struck out five but walked four and hit two-batters.

Wentling, Nick Helget and Joey Mindrup all scored three times and Griffin Schumacher and Chet Irvin both had two RBI's.&nbsp;

Regional Semifinal: TMP 6, Beloit 5 In the first game of the day TMP starter Caden Morgan pitched his first career complete game and he and Jace Wentling each drove in two in the 6-5 TMP win.

After Morgan struck out the side in order in the first TMP wasted little time getting in the score colunm. Wentling tripled home a run and Morgan follwed with a sacrifice fly to put TMP up 2-0.

In the third inning Wentling and Morgan added their second RBI's of the game for a 4-1 lead.&nbsp;

Beloit plated three runs in the top of the fourth tying the game at 4.

In the bottom of that inning Griffin Schumacher singled home a run to put TMP up 5-4. He would later scored on an error for a 6-4 lead.

Beloit got a run in the top of the seventh and they got the tying run to third but Morgan retired the strikeout for the TMP win.

Morgan allowed three earned runs, five total runs on four hits in seven innings. Morgan improved to 4-0 on the mound.&nbsp;

TMP is 14-5 heading into the state tournament in Manhattan May 26 &amp; 27.

⚾ TMP-Marian punches ticket to state tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. and MJ Melendez homered and fellow rookie Emmanuel Rivera hit a go-ahead triple, leading the Kansas City Royals over the Chicago White Sox 6-2 Wednesday night.

Witt, Melendez and Rivera each had two hits.

“The young guys provided a lot of excitement,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “It was fun to watch them.”

Rivera’s sinking liner escaped a diving Adam Engel, rolling into the right field corner for a triple that drove in Melendez with the tiebreaking run in the sixth.

Melendez padded the lead with a two-run homer, his second, in the eighth.

“It felt really good,” Melendez said. “Going into that at-bat, I had a really good plan. I felt really confident. Anything to the outfield I felt pretty confident to get that run in.”

Witt hit his fourth home run, a 436-foot drive off White Sox starter Lucas Giolito.

“(He) hits the ball hard,” Matheny said. “That’s what he’s always done all the way through the minor league system. Even as an amateur, that’s the thing that’s always stood out. To have consistently hard contact. He’s in a really good place now. He’s got enough power when he’s short to the ball.”

In his return from the COVID-19-related injured list, Giolito labored early, needing 54 pitches to complete the first two innings, allowing four hits and two walks.

“(It was) not my best,” Giolito said. “But I’m happy to be back, and back in a normal routine.”

After Witt’s leadoff homer in the third, however, he struck out six of the next seven batters and permitted only a pair of singles before being lifted after five innings.

Royals starter Zack Greinke hasn’t won since Aug. 13 last year, while with the Astros. He allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out four in 5 2/3 innings.

“We’ve got to get him a win, ’cause he’s throwing good enough to have a bunch of them,” Matheny said. “He’s a joy to watch. That’s pitching at its finest, how he manipulates and makes minor adjustments, figuring out ways to get the break he wants on his slider. He’s very unique and he’s doing such a great job of making big pitches in big situations.”

“I think the last time I paid attention (to wins) was 2005,” Greinke said. “I started pitching good, but didn’t get many wins and then started trying to do more and then started making mistakes, trying to get wins instead of trying to get outs. Nowadays, it’s harder than ever. It’s harder to go deep in games than it used to be.”

Greinke walked Engel in the fifth, his first free pass since April 21 against Minnesota, a span of 128 batters.

The second of Tim Anderson’s three singles drove in Engel to make it 2-all. Anderson has nine multi-hit performances in his last 17 contests, batting .378 (28 for 74) in that span.

Rookie Collin Snyder (3-1) recorded the final out of the sixth for the win. Reynaldo Lopez (4-1) took the loss.

took a two-run lead into the bottom of the sixth in their 3A regional semifinal
Wednesday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex, but Beloit rallied for three
runs and beat the Monarchs 3-2.

The Trojans (17-4) used three
doubles along with a walk and an error to pull off the comeback.

The Monarchs (12-10) were retired in
order on two groundouts and a strikeout in the seventh.

TMP grabbed the early lead when Hannah Garcia doubled and scored on a Brooke Koeningsman single in the top of the first. They added another run in the fourth when Halle Dreiling
scored on a Jaci VonLintel two-out single.

Dreiling finished with three hits.
Alexa Ryersee added two as the Monarchs out-hit Beloit 10-4.

Madison Augustine (11-9) went the
distance in the circle and gave up four hits with four walks and four
strikeouts.

Beloit lost to Hoisington 11-0 in
five innings in the regional final.

🥎 Monarchs come up short in regional semifinal

NEWTON - A furious seventh inning comeback fell one run short for the Hays High Indians in the first round of Regional play in Newton on Wednesday.

Hays scored five runs in the final inning all with two outs. Lainey Hardman sparked the late rally with a single followed by triples by Ashlynn Zimmer and Aubree Thomas. The Indians put the tying and go ahead run into scoring position but could not extend the game, falling 9-8.

Four errors over the first two innings by the Hays High Indians helped Andover Central plate eight runs and grab an early lead they would never give up.

The Jaguars pushed six across the plate in the first inning that saw Hays commit three errors. The Indians throwing error in the second inning plated two more runs and increased the Andover Central lead to 8-0.

Avery Solida scored the Indians first run in the bottom of the second. Hays couldn't take advantage of multiple base runners in each of the first four innings, stranding eight.&nbsp;

Hays totaled 16 hits on the day but stranded 13 runners. Andover Central tallied 11 hits and stranded six. They committed two errors in the game, both in the seventh inning. Hays finished with the four errors from the first two innings.

Ashlynn Zimmer had a three hit game. Lainey Hardman, Avery Solida, Elle Dreiling, Riley Dreher and Aubree Thomas all had multi-hit games.

Hays finishes the year at 13-9. Andover Central advances to the Regional Championship at 10-11.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer outdueled Davis Martin as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Singer (1-0) had his best outing since last September 5, when he threw seven shutout innings against the White Sox. He struck out a career high nine batters and didn’t walk anyone. He allowed just four hits in seven innings.

Josh Staumont earned his third save in five chances.

Davis Martin (0-1) made his debut and was equally impressive. He allowed just one run on five hits in five innings, walking one and striking out seven.

The Royals finally capitalized in the second inning after going 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the first game. Emmanuel Rivera led off the inning with a double and scored on a Michael A. Taylor double into left field.

The Royals got another run in the sixth on M.J. Melendez’s first career home run, a 425-foot blast to right center.

The White Sox got a run in the eighth, but left fielder Andrew Benintendi threw out Josh Harrison as he tried to score from second on a single.

The White Sox won the first game behind clutch hitting by Jose Abreu and working around Kansas City offensive threats. Abreu’s two-out, two-run double keyed a three-run fifth inning.

“We only scored three ourselves,” manager Tony La Russa said. “The way I was taught to look at it is ‘What did they have to hit?’ If you don’t get pitches to hit, you don’t hit them. There were very few mistakes made in RBI situations.”

White Sox: Selected the contract of RHP Davis Martin from Triple-A Charlotte. He made his Major League debut. They also added RHP Kyle Crick as the 27th man on the roster for the doubleheader. The White Sox placed RHP Michael Kopech on the paternity list. To make room for Martin on the 40-man roster, the White Sox moved LHP Garrett Crochet to the 60-day IL.
