PARK CITY – Hays High has two wrestlers in the championship match at the 6-5A State Tournament at Hartman Arena in Park City. Sarah Zimmerman will wrestle for the title at 110 and Tionna Napue at 115. Both won all three of their matches on Wednesday by either fall of technical fall. Lexie Burton and Lexi Barnett both went 1-1 and wrestle on the back side Thursday.
Zimmerman, who finished state runner-up a year ago, pinned Paige Peterson of Spring Hill 21 seconds into the match in the first round. She defeated Avery Hinojos of Newton by technical Fall (18-0) in round two then knocked off Alivia Wilson of Wichita South in the semifinals by fall at the 1:07 mark. Zimmernan (33-1) will face Anna Cullens (29-1) in Thursday’s finals. Cullens won all three of her matches by fall on Wednesday.
Napue defeated Rosemary Mader of Spring Hill by fall less than a minute into her first round match. In the second round she defeated Washburn Rural’s Maddy Blow with a pin at the 3:03 mark then knocked off Xitily Marez of Wichita North by fall at the 1:29 mark in the semifinals. Napue (34-3) will face Junction City freshman Bre Villanueva (19-2) in Thursday finals. Villanueva won her first two matches by fall and had a 7-0 decision in the semifinals.
Lexie Burton won her first match at 135 by forfeit then lost to Kamahni Jackson of KC-Harmon by major decision (9-0). She will face Gianna De Coco of Olathe West in the consolation cross-bracket Thursday.
Freshman Lexi Barnett lost her opening round match to Shawnee Height’s McKenna Haltom by fall then defeated McKinzie Ross of Blue Valley 7-3 in her first consolation match. She will wrestle Justice Thomas from Olathe South in the cross-bracket Thursday.
