馃弨 Hays girls and boys win on Senior Night

HAYS - Hays High finished the regular season at home by hosting Great Bend. The Indians also honored their seniors.

Girls - Hays 47, Great Bend 40
Hays and Great Bend traded the lead seven times in the first half. The Indians grabbed the lead for good early in the second quarter on the way to a 47-40 victory.

Great Bend had the lead four times but never by more than two points at 2-0 and 11-9. Hays took a 13-11 advantage and never trailed again. The Panthers did tie the score once more at 13 but never regained the lead.

Hays built a six point lead twice in the second quarter including the 26-20 difference at halftime.

Highlights

During the third quarter Hays took an eight point advantage five different times but never pushed it to double figures. Great Bend end the third with a push to close the game down 36-32. 

Hays though never let Great Bend getting any closer pushing their lead to nine and eventually winning 47-40.

Molly Martin scored a game high 18 points for Hays. Great Bend was led by Kara Feist at 11.

The Indians improve to 13-7 and finish conference play at 5-3. Great Bend drops to 7-13 and 1-7.

Hays will be the #8 seed in 5A West and will host Kapaun (12-8) on Tuesday.

Boys - Hays 46, Great Bend 42
Hays took a ten point lead into the fourth quarter and held off a Great Bend rally to win 46-42.

Each team made mini runs in the first half. Great Bend had two 5-0 runs and Hays had runs of 6-0 and 5-0. The Panthers held an 8-6 lead through the first quarter. The Indians opened the second quarter with their only three pointer of the game for a 9-8 advantage. 

Great Bend held three four point advantages in the second quarter, the last at 17-13. Hays took the lead back at 18-17 and led 22-18 at halftime.

Highlights

Hays never trailed in the second half but Great Bend would never go away. The Indians built an 11 point lead at 32-21 midway through the third and led 36-26 heading to the fourth.

Great Bend cut the lead down to two on four occasions. The last at 44-42 with 1:11 remaining. The Panthers missed the four final field goal attempts and Hays made just enough free throws for the 46-42 victory.

Kyreese Groen tied a career high 11 points. Jack Weimer scored 11 as well for his 12th double figure game this season. Chason VanDerWege grabbed a career high 14 rebounds. Ian Premer led Great Bend with 12.

Hays improves to 12-8 and 5-3 in the WAC. Great Bend falls to 11-9 and 5-3. 

The two teams will meet up again in Hays on Wednesday to open sub-state play as the 8 and 9 seeds.
