🤼‍♀️ Ellis' Haag wins state title, several area wrestlers place

SALINA – Ellis’ Kaydawn Haag claimed the state championship at 140 pounds Thursday at the 3-2-1A state wrestling champions in Salina.

Haag opened the tournament with a major decision in her first round match on Wednesday and then followed that up with three straight pins including a three period fall over Audrey Darnell of Baldwin in the championship match.

Haag, a junior for the Railroaders, is a three-time state placer. She finished runner-up at 143 pounds in the D2 championship as a freshman. Was fifth last season and claimed the title as a junior with a record of 29-3.

Plainville’s Caxton Smith finished fifth at 125 pounds. She won her first match on Wednesday but lost in the championship quarterfinals. Thursday she wrestled back to the consolation semifinals but came up short and wrestled and secured fifth place.

Quinter’s Cali Wagoner also earned a fifth place finish at 135 pounds. She went 2-1 on the first day, getting all the way to the championship semifinals before losing to the eventual champion. She also dropped her consolation semifinals match to start day two before finishing fifth.

Stockton had two wrestlers earn medals at the state tournament. Carolina Northrup placed fifth at 100 pounds and Ashlyn Hahn was fourth at 120 pounds.
