👟 Three Tigers reach podium on final day of DII nationals

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Fort Hays State track and field team picked up three All-American honors, broke one school record and had one move on to the finals on day two of the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships (May 27). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6484">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;lifted his third All-American trophy after placing fifth in the decathlon with a school-record 7,192 points. He bested his previous PR by 73 points after posting personal-bests in four of the 10 events. The sophomore's top event on day two was the 110m hurdles, where he compiled 783 points after a personal-best 15.56. He also hit personal records in the discus (115-6, 568 points) and the javelin (154-11, 548 points).&nbsp;Nolan's fifth-place finish is tied for the best-ever placement at a DII national meet for an FHSU multi-athlete&nbsp;and he is the first Tiger to place in the decathlon at the national level during the DII era. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6549">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;finished the heptathlon in ninth place with 5,132 points, just six points shy of reaching the podium. Rossi will receive second team All-American accolades for her performance, the fourth All-American award in her career. Her best event of the day was the 800m run, where she was third-fastest in the field with a personal-best time of 2:16.93 (866 points). Rossi later ran in the 100m hurdles prelims, posting a finals-qualifying time of 13.92 to finish third in her heat and eighth overall. ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Fort Hays State track and field team picked up three All-American honors, broke one school record and had one move on to the finals on day two of the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships (May 27). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6484">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;lifted his third All-American trophy after placing fifth in the decathlon with a school-record 7,192 points. He bested his previous PR by 73 points after posting personal-bests in four of the 10 events. The sophomore's top event on day two was the 110m hurdles, where he compiled 783 points after a personal-best 15.56. He also hit personal records in the discus (115-6, 568 points) and the javelin (154-11, 548 points).&nbsp;Nolan's fifth-place finish is tied for the best-ever placement at a DII national meet for an FHSU multi-athlete&nbsp;and he is the first Tiger to place in the decathlon at the national level during the DII era. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6549">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;finished the heptathlon in ninth place with 5,132 points, just six points shy of reaching the podium. Rossi will receive second team All-American accolades for her performance, the fourth All-American award in her career. Her best event of the day was the 800m run, where she was third-fastest in the field with a personal-best time of 2:16.93 (866 points). Rossi later ran in the 100m hurdles prelims, posting a finals-qualifying time of 13.92 to finish third in her heat and eighth overall. She will run in both the 100m hurdles finals and the 400m hurdles finals on Saturday. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;earned second team All-America honors in the 200m dash after finishing 12th in the prelims with a time of 23.93. 👟Churchman 5th, Two Other All-Americans on Day 2 of Nationals

The Hays High baseball team landed three players on Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches 5A All-State team released Friday evening. Senior standout Dylan Dreiling was named the 5A Player of the Year and was named to the first team as an outfielder and honorable mention as a pitcher. He's joined by fellow seniors Garrett Wellbrock and Noah Weimer who were both honorable mention.

It's the second consecutive year Dreiling has been honored by the KABC after being named a first team pitcher in 2021.

Despite battling injuries most of the season, Dreiling set new school records with a .597 batting average and 10 home runs. He also drove in a team-high 38 runs. He was named to the KABC first team as an outfielder. Dreiling was also named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Wellbrock was named honorable mention as both a middle infielder and pitcher. He finished the season with a .359 batting average with 15 RBIs and a team-high 29 runs scored. He went 6-1 on the mound with complete games in six of his seven starts and a 2.06 ERA over a season-high 51.0 innings pitched.

Weimer batted .368 and drove in seven runs while scoring 17 times. starting the entire season a second base.

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams opened competition at the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships with multiple strong performances on Thursday. The Tigers locked up three All-American honors (one first team, two second team), had two runners move on to the finals and had two solid starts in the multi-events. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6484">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;wrapped up the opening day of competition in the decathlon in first place with 4,017 points. He led the field in the two running events and was third overall in both jumps. The sophomore began the day with a personal-best 10.68 in the 100m dash, good for 933 points. He then ended the afternoon by beating the field to the line in the 400m dash with a time of 47.87, adding 915 points to his total. Churchman leads second place by 12 points and is 43 points in front of the pace he set when he broke the school record with 7,119 points earlier this season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6549">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;ranks fourth in the heptathlon through four events with 3,174 points. She posted personal-best times in both running events on day one, including a 13.69 in the 100m hurdles that is just .02 off the school record. That time earned her 1,023 points, while her 200m time of 24.87 was good for 899 points and eighth place on the FHSU DII era performance chart. The junior is nine points in front of the pace set earlier this season when she broke the school record with 5,214 points. Rossi also competed in the 400m hurdle prelims Thursday evening following a one-hour rain delay. She posted a time of 59.19 in the first round, fourth-best in the field to qualify for Saturday's finals. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;earned All-American honors for the sixth time in his career after clearing the 16-8.75 bar in the pole vault, placing eighth.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6485">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;also cleared the bar at 16-8.75, finishing ninth to pick up second team All-American status, his second All-American honor. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;is on to the finals in the 100m dash after posting a time of 11.59 in the prelims. This is her third trip to a finals race at the national championships after reaching the 200m finals last year and the 60m finals indoors in 2021. The senior found himself in 17th around the midway point but managed to pass five runners to climb into the final All-America position. Schmidt will wrap up his impressive Tiger career Saturday evening with the 5,000m run. ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams opened competition at the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships with multiple strong performances on Thursday. The Tigers locked up three All-American honors (one first team, two second team), had two runners move on to the finals and had two solid starts in the multi-events. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6484">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;wrapped up the opening day of competition in the decathlon in first place with 4,017 points. He led the field in the two running events and was third overall in both jumps. The sophomore began the day with a personal-best 10.68 in the 100m dash, good for 933 points. He then ended the afternoon by beating the field to the line in the 400m dash with a time of 47.87, adding 915 points to his total. Churchman leads second place by 12 points and is 43 points in front of the pace he set when he broke the school record with 7,119 points earlier this season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6549">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;ranks fourth in the heptathlon through four events with 3,174 points. She posted personal-best times in both running events on day one, including a 13.69 in the 100m hurdles that is just .02 off the school record. That time earned her 1,023 points, while her 200m time of 24.87 was good for 899 points and eighth place on the FHSU DII era performance chart. The junior is nine points in front of the pace set earlier this season when she broke the school record with 5,214 points. Rossi also competed in the 400m hurdle prelims Thursday evening following a one-hour rain delay. She posted a time of 59.19 in the first round, fourth-best in the field to qualify for Saturday's finals. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;earned All-American honors for the sixth time in his career after clearing the 16-8.75 bar in the pole vault, placing eighth.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6485">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;also cleared the bar at 16-8.75, finishing ninth to pick up second team All-American status, his second All-American honor. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;is on to the finals in the 100m dash after posting a time of 11.59 in the prelims. 👟 Strong start to outdoor nationals for Tiger track and field

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Whit Merrifield drove in two runs with a double and scored on Bobby Witt Jr.’s double, as the Kansas City Royals rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 Thursday night.

Josh Staumont (2-1) worked a scoreless inning and picked up the win. Scott Barlow escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and stranded two on base in the ninth to earn his fifth save as the Royals snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Devin Smeltzer pitched seven scoreless innings for the Twins before Tyler Duffey (2-3) let the lead slip away in the eighth. Emmanuel Rivera singled with one out and moved to second on Ryan O’Hearn’s two-out, pinch-hit single. Merrifield then lined a double into the gap in right-center to tie the score at 2. After Andrew Benintendi walked, Witt doubled to left-center, scoring Merrifield with the go-ahead run.

“You hope to have that big hit — that’s the thing that’s eluded us more than anything else. But (Merrifield) comes through there,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “Then Bobby ... just shortens up, doesn’t try to do too much, just uses the middle of the field and the next thing you know, we’ve got an opportunity to walk away with a win.”

The Twins tried to rally in their half of the eighth, loading the bases on singles by Gary Sánchez, Gio Urshela and Luis Arraez with no outs. But Barlow came on to strike out the next two batters and retired Max Kepler on a soft grounder to first base, leaving the bases loaded.

Minnesota put runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth as well, but Witt made a nice play on Urshela's hard-hit grounder for the final out.

Barlow threw a season-high 41 pitches to earn the six-out save. He got plenty help from his catcher, rookie MJ Melendez, who blocked four pitches in the dirt in the eighth inning, all with the tying run on third base.

“To be able to get through that, Scotty’s got to make great pitches, but he’s also got to have a lot of faith in MJ,” Matheny said. “And MJ did a phenomenal job keeping the ball in front and giving Scott confidence because he has to be able to do that.”

Smeltzer handcuffed the Royals all night, relying mostly on a mix of fastballs and changeups. He allowed two hits and walked one while striking out six. He was starting in place of Joe Ryan, who was added to the COVID-19 IL on Wednesday. In his most recent appearance, Smeltzer held the Royals to one run over 5 1/3 innings in a 6-4 Twins victory on May 20.

“I don’t know if you can go out there and pitch much better than he did,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He did a very, very nice job in every way. The opposition looked uncomfortable in a lot of at-bats. He kept them off-balance nicely and missed a few bats as well. Everything we could ask for from him.”

Meanwhile, Royals starter Daniel Lynch also kept the Twins in check, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

The Twins got on the board in the second inning on Ryan Jeffers’ RBI single. They added their second run in the fourth when Jose Miranda doubled and came around on a two-out single by Gilberto Celestino.

Kansas City's Brewer Hicklin made his major league debut on Thursday, batting ninth and playing center field. He was hitting .266 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in 42 games at Triple-A Omaha this year.

Hicklin struck out looking in his first two at-bats against Smeltzer and was replaced by a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.

⚾ Royals rally in the eighth inning to earn victory over Twins

MANHATTAN – The TMP-Marian pitchers combined to walk eight
and the offense was held in check for most of the day as they drop their state
quarterfinal matchup to Girard 8-2 Thursday atToiton Family Stadium in Manhattan.

The Monarchs managed to get a couple of runners on in their
half of the first inning thanks to a Mark Rack single and a Caden Morgan walk
but Girard starter Trevor Amershek struck out the side in the first and again
in the second. 

After allowing those two runners to reach in the first inning Amershek retired 17 of the next 19 Monarchs hitters until he was lifted in the seventh
inning with two men on base. Amershek allowed two runs on four TMP hits in 6 2/3 innings to earn the
win.

On the other side TMP starter Cade Morgan struggled with his
command. He walked a career-high seven in three innings and allowed six runs
over three innings in the loss.

The big inning came for the Trojans in the bottom of the
second when Morgan walk four of the first five hitters he faced to start the
inning. All four came in to score putting Girard up 4-0 through two.

Morgan struggled with command again in the fourth inning,
walking three straight to start the inning. Two more runs scored giving Girard a 6-0 lead.

The Trojans led 8-0 after scoring two in the sixth inning.

The Monarchs bats woke up in the top of the seventh scoring
two runs on two hits and taking advantage of three walks.

Garrett Feauto singled with one out, Joey Mindrup added a
two-out single and Griffin Schumacher walked to load the bases.

Nick Herrman and Mark Rack both walked with the bases loaded
cutting it to 8-2 but the rally was cut short in the next at bat with an 8-2
TMP loss.

The Monarchs were held to just the two runs on four hits and
struck out 11 times as a team.

Fort Hays State director of athletics&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/staff.aspx?staff=5">Curtis Hammeke</a>&nbsp;has announced the hiring of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/staff.aspx?staff=316">Justin Wichert</a>&nbsp;as the 16th head baseball coach at FHSU. "I am both grateful and excited for the opportunity to lead the Tiger baseball program," said Wichert. "I want to thank&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/staff.aspx?staff=5">Curtis Hammeke</a>&nbsp;and everyone involved in allowing me to become part of the FHSU Athletics family. Wichert comes to Hays after a four-season stint as head coach at Trinidad State College in Trinidad, Colo. The Stillwater, Okla. native led the Trojans to a record of 112-83 from 2019 until 2022, including two trips to the postseason. His squad reached the Region IX title game this last season and hosted the 2019 regional tournament before playing in the district tournament that year. The Trojans won the Empire Conference Championship in Wichert's first year at the helm. Wichert earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from William Jewell in 2006 before completing a master's degree in Health, Human Performance and Recreation from Pittsburg State in 2012. Hays High senior Dalton Dale has committed to play baseball at Neosho County Community College.

Dale was recently named to the Western Athletic Conference second team after hitting
.253 with six doubles, four home runs and 24 RBIs. 

He was an All-WAC and All-State selection as a junior.

PHOENIX (AP) — Pavin Smith and pinch-hitter Jordan Luplow homered in a five-run sixth inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Kansas City Royals 8-6 on Tuesday night.

Arizona hit four homers and won for the fifth time in six games. The Diamondbacks lead the National League with 60 homers.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo doesn't want his team to be considered a homer-heavy club.

“I don’t want to say that’s who we are," Lovullo said. "I don’t want us to be known as a home run-hitting team. I want us to be known as good hitters who hit home runs because we are balanced and through the baseball. Our mindset is hard line drives in the middle of the diamond, 90 miles an hour or greater, and good things will take off from there.”

Daulton Varsho and David Peralta also homered for the Diamondbacks, who have 15 homers in their last six games, including seven in a 10-6 victory against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field last Friday. They have 11 comeback victories.

“I've been saying this since the year started — we're going to be an annoying team to play,” Arizona stater Zac Gallen said. “We have a lot of guys in there with something to prove. A lot of guys with chips on their shoulder. We're not going to have names that jump off the page. We grind it."

MJ Melendez homered, doubled and drove in three runs for Kansas City, which has lost six in a row and eight of 10.

“He's a dangerous hitter,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “He continues to show his power.”

Melendez’s RBI double sparked a three-run sixth inning capped by rookie Dairon Blanco’s two-run single for a 6-3 lead before the Diamondbacks scored five two-out runs in the last of the inning for reliever Joe Mantiply (2-0).

Amir Garrett gave up a walk and a single before being replaced by Taylor Clarke (1-1), who gave up a game-tying three-run homer to Luplow, a 408-footer that hugged the left field line.

Varsho doubled and Smith followed with a 415-foot shot to right, his second in as many games, for an 8-6 lead. Arizona had six homers in sweeping the two-game series.

“You play your role the best you can and you try to grow in that role,” said Luplow, who has two pinch-hit homers this season. “You get the hand that's dealt. I was just looking for something over the middle of the plate. Not trying to do too much with it, and sometimes a lot happens."

Whit Merrifield had two hits for the Royals, who have lost leads of six, four and three runs in their last three games.

“It's hard to have three tougher ones than these three in a row,” Matheny said.

Mark Melancon pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances.

Gallen entered the game with a 1.14 ERA but gave up six runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He had not given up more than two runs and five hits in any of his previous seven starts.

Diamondbacks relievers Mantiply, Ian Kennedy, and Noe Ramirez lead the NL lead with 21 appearances after each pitched Tuesday. Mantiply, 2-0 with two saves and an 0.51 ERA, has been scored upon once.

Lovullo said he was “very concerned” about the usage. “I don’t want any of our guys to have 80 appearances this year," he said, "That’s way too many. We embrace close games. We need our horses to go out there protect those games when we are ahead. We’ll be mindful of that. I have to make sure I don’t get anybody hurt.”

Bobby Witt Jr. attended Arizona’s clinching Game 7 victory over the New York Yankees in the 2001 World Series at Chase Field and rode in victory parade the next day, although the memories are a little fuzzy. Then again, he was only 16 1/2 months old.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A survey of college athletes by the NCAA suggests that rates of mental exhaustion, anxiety and depression remain as much as twice as high as pre-pandemic levels, but feelings of hopelessness have improved. 

The results of the study, a follow-up to two conducted in the fall of 2020, were released Tuesday. The data is based on input from more than 9,800 respondents and shows that mental health concerns remain sharply elevated. 

The survey was conducted from Nov. 17-Dec. 13 and was designed by NCAA research in collaboration with the NCAA Sport Science Institute and the Division I, II and III Student-Athlete Advisory Committees.

The results show that 69% of women’s sports participants and 63% of men’s sports participants agreed or strongly agreed that they know where to go on campus if they have mental health concerns. However, less than half of each said they would agree or strongly agree that they would feel comfortable seeking support from a mental health provider on campus. 

The NCAA constitution mandates that each member school create an environment that reinforces the need for and encourages the availability of resources for the physical and mental health concerns within athletics.

Since March 1, at least five athletes at NCAA member institutions have died by suicide, highlighting the growing need for awareness of services available on campus as students juggle the stresses of athletic competition, expectations, academics, a social life and plans for the future. 

“A lot of what influences the direction on this topic is what sort of conversations are happening on a campus surrounding mental health,” Scott Hamilton, a mental health clinical counselor at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, said in a new release. “Are there groups on campus, whether through the athletics department or through counseling services, using their voice to help reduce the stigma?” 

Working with teams, Hamilton said, has been effective in changing mindsets. 

"When college campuses are willing to have open conversations about the importance of mental health, taking care of yourself mentally can ease the apprehension of student-athletes seeking help,” he said. 

According to survey data, 65% of female athletes and 58% of male athletes agreed or strongly agreed they take the mental health concerns of teammates seriously, and 56% of both sexes said they know how to help a teammate with a mental health concern.

NCAA survey shows mental health still a concern for athletes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6241">Alec Bevis</a>&nbsp;(men's soccer) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;(women's basketball) of Fort Hays State University were selected as finalists for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's Ken B. Jones Award, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group, announced Tuesday (May 24) by the league office. The annual award recognizes the conference's male and female student-athletes of the year. The Ken B. Jones Award has seen a two-year absence since the COVID-19 pandemic changed the format for this honor. In 2019-20, the conference instead recognized both a male and female fall student-athlete of the year and winter student-athlete of the year. The spring season that year was cut short due to the pandemic and spring student-athletes did not have an opportunity to build a resume of accomplishments for the annual Ken B. Jones Award. In 2020-21, fall student-athletes did not have an opportunity to compete, so the conference honored winter and spring student-athletes of the year. This will be the first time since 2018-19 that the format returns to an award given to just one male and female student-athlete for all seasons. Randall was the MIAA Women's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year in 2020-21. The winners will be announced at the 2021-22 MIAA Awards Celebration presented by Husch Blackwell on Monday, June 6 at the Little Theatre inside historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. Fort Hays State is one of two schools with two finalists this year, with Nebraska-Kearney also sending a pair of athletes to the Awards Celebration. Fort Hays State has now had 15 Ken B. Jones Award finalists since joining the MIAA in 2006-07. Three Tigers have earned the conference's top honor, including Ryan Stanley (2020-21 spring), Randall (2020-21 winter) and Kate Lehman (2014-15). FHSU has had at least one finalist every year since 2014-15. A 13-member panel of athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors - including a representative from each member institution - select the finalists. Each nominee is judged in three areas, including 2021-22 athletic accomplishments, career academic accomplishments, and 2021-22 campus/community service. Bevis, native of Wichita, Kan., joins four other men's finalists, which includes Kizan David (LU, track &amp; field), Jace McDown (ESU, football), Blake Freeman (NSU, baseball) and Matt Malcom (UNK, wrestling). Bevis concluded a highly decorated soccer career in 2021, helping Fort Hays State to the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. It was the ninth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the FHSU men, which is the longest active streak in the nation in NCAA Division II. Bevis was a huge part of FHSU sustaining their success in 2021 as the GAC/MIAA Defender of the Year, an All-America Third Team selection by the D2CCA, and a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection. He was one of only 15 men's soccer student-athletes in NCAA Division II named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Team. Bevis was one of the top players in the conference and region throughout his career as a Tiger. He was a three-time All-GAC/MIAA selection, a two-time D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection, and a two-time All-GAC/MIAA Tournament selection. He was the GAC/MIAA Freshman of the Year in 2019. He helped the Tigers to a record of 32-14-5 during his time on the field. Bevis was a member of the FHSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for much of his career as a Tiger, helping organize and execute multiple events including Tiger Field Day. He volunteered at the Hays Night to Shine, a prom-like event for individuals with mental/physical disabilities. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6241">Alec Bevis</a>&nbsp;(men's soccer) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;(women's basketball) of Fort Hays State University were selected as finalists for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's Ken B. Jones Award, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group, announced Tuesday (May 24) by the league office. The annual award recognizes the conference's male and female student-athletes of the year. The Ken B. Jones Award has seen a two-year absence since the COVID-19 pandemic changed the format for this honor. In 2019-20, the conference instead recognized both a male and female fall student-athlete of the year and winter student-athlete of the year. The spring season that year was cut short due to the pandemic and spring student-athletes did not have an opportunity to build a resume of accomplishments for the annual Ken B. Jones Award. In 2020-21, fall student-athletes did not have an opportunity to compete, so the conference honored winter and spring student-athletes of the year. This will be the first time since 2018-19 that the format returns to an award given to just one male and female student-athlete for all seasons. Randall was the MIAA Women's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year in 2020-21. The winners will be announced at the 2021-22 MIAA Awards Celebration presented by Husch Blackwell on Monday, June 6 at the Little Theatre inside historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. Fort Hays State is one of two schools with two finalists this year, with Nebraska-Kearney also sending a pair of athletes to the Awards Celebration. Fort Hays State has now had 15 Ken B. Jones Award finalists since joining the MIAA in 2006-07. Three Tigers have earned the conference's top honor, including Ryan Stanley (2020-21 spring), Randall (2020-21 winter) and Kate Lehman (2014-15). FHSU has had at least one finalist every year since 2014-15. A 13-member panel of athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors - including a representative from each member institution - select the finalists. Each nominee is judged in three areas, including 2021-22 athletic accomplishments, career academic accomplishments, and 2021-22 campus/community service. Bevis, native of Wichita, Kan., joins four other men's finalists, which includes Kizan David (LU, track &amp; field), Jace McDown (ESU, football), Blake Freeman (NSU, baseball) and Matt Malcom (UNK, wrestling). Bevis concluded a highly decorated soccer career in 2021, helping Fort Hays State to the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. It was the ninth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the FHSU men, which is the longest active streak in the nation in NCAA Division II. Bevis was a huge part of FHSU sustaining their success in 2021 as the GAC/MIAA Defender of the Year, an All-America Third Team selection by the D2CCA, and a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection. He was one of only 15 men's soccer student-athletes in NCAA Division II named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Team. Bevis was one of the top players in the conference and region throughout his career as a Tiger. HUTCHINSON — Mace Krol will be the next head coach of Hutch High baseball.&nbsp;

Krol
 is a Nickerson native and played college baseball at Hutchinson 
Community College and at Nicholls State before finishing at Fort Hays 
State.&nbsp;

Krol is the son of&nbsp;longtime Nickerson baseball coach Rich Krol.

Krol
 is a PE teacher at Hutchinson High School and was the long-time 
assistant to Jim Preston, who stepped down after this season.

holes of play on Monday for the final.

TMP-Marian junior Pake Dewey tied for 25th place after his
13-over-par 83 at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. Cheney’s Harrison Middleton
won the 3A title by one shot over Hesston’s Camden Waterson. Middleton shot a 2-under 68. Norton freshman Eli Jones shot an 82 and placed 21st.

⛳ Rain washes away day two of the state championships

In 2021, the Dylan Dreiling junior season was highlighted by his pitching exploits by going undefeated with a 9-0 record, setting a school record for season wins while also establish a season earned-run-average mark of 0.52.

His Hays High Indians had finished third in Class 5A and Dreiling had hit .427 from his left-handed side of the plate. His 86 at-bats produced 37 hits with seven doubles, three triples and three home runs with 26 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

He earned Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Year.

When his 2022 season got under way, Dreiling was nursing a tender arm and then suffered a leg injury that kept him off the mound most of the season.

What Dreiling accomplished was hitting .597 (school season record) with 40 hits in 67 official at-bats. He walked 24 times, meaning he received a free pass 26 percent of the time he came to the plate.

“Considering the injuries I battled, I thought the senior season went about as well as could be expected,” Dreiling said in a telephone interview. “The coaches let me hit and I’d do my best to get to the base. Sometimes, they’d pinch hit, but they couldn’t do that all the time.”

His explosion at the plate earned him a repeat of his WAC Baseball Player of the Year award.

He instead focused on his hitting and the 5-11, 195-pound Tennessee University bound Dreiling unloaded on opposing pitchers. The Volunteers have been the No. 1-ranked NCAA Division I team most of the spring season.

He produced 27 runs, 18 singles, 12 doubles and a season record 10 home runs. He struck out only four times and had 38 RBIs to cap off a season in which his slugging percentage reached an unheard of 1.223.

He said the Volunteer coaching staff has indicated an outfield position will be his most likely position with the possibility of some spot pitching.&nbsp;

“It was a little frustrating because it (walks) came more at the end of the year,” Dreiling said. “I think the numbers indicate that I got stronger this year and I did that by getting in the weight room in the off-season.”

His limited time on the mound resulted in a 0-3 record in just four appearances. One of those, however, was a memorable 9.2 innings in a wild, 16-inning home game against Manhattan in which Dreiling crushed a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 12th&nbsp;to tie the game at 2-all, only to see the visitors produce two winning runs in the 16th.

“It was just a fun game to play, but disappointing to lose,” Dreiling said. “Hitting the home run (opposite field to left) was something I’ll always remember.”

Dreiling, who played elite summer baseball in Georgia, said he worked hard to re-adjust his hitting to the speed of the pitchers he faced in Kansas as opposed to more powerful pitching in his summer league.

“Sometimes, it was hard to stay back on a pitch, but I figured it out,” he said. “I saw a lot of sliders and curves, but the intentional walks were the hardest to accept.”

Dreiling, who played in the outfield in his freshman and junior seasons (sophomore season canceled due to COVID-19), said he will remember the special times playing with his childhood friends throughout his three-year career with HHS.

“These are the guys I grew up playing with since we were little kids,” Dreiling said. “They are my lifetime friends and I will just remember many things that were fun. We had a lot of success.”

This year, the Indians went 6-2 in the WAC and shared the conference title with Great Bend, whose coach, Randy Beck, earned the WAC Coach of the Year honor.

Dreiling leaves Hays High with 11 season and career records, including an 18-strikeout game his junior year.&nbsp;

“Each season has its own special memory I think,” Dreiling said. “I don’t think any one season stands out more than others. I just enjoyed playing with all my friends. That was the best part.”

Dreiling was joined on the all-WAC first team by teammate Garrett Wellbrock while co-champion Great Bend snared three spots – Chayse Gruber, Sage Koelsch and Paco Hernandez. Garden City, third in the conference, had seniors Micah Perez and Caleb Metzen on the squad; Chayston Keck and Aidan Sowers represented Dodge City while Hunter Huskey of Liberal rounded out the first team.

At the 2A state tourney in Emporia, both Austin Carroll and Mason Gottschalk of Ellis moved on to the second round. Carroll shot an 83 and Gottschalk an 84 Monday. Trego’s Tyler Malsam also advanced to the second round. 

Hoxie sat in second place in the team standings, one-shot
behind Sacred Heart. Hill City was in third, 20 strokes back.

Eric Kessler of La Crosse Eric Kessler shot a 95 and tied for 16th place at the
Sand Greens tourney in Downs. Zach Rose of Sylvan-Lucas won the individual title with

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona's familiarity with Zack Greinke led to a solid offensive night against the Diamondbacks' former pitcher.

Christian Walker and Pavin Smith homered, and Ketel Marte’s two-run double broke a fourth-inning tie to help the Diamondbacks beat Kansas City 9-5 Monday night in Greinke’s first appearance at Chase Field since he left at the 2019 trade deadline after 3.5 seasons in Arizona.

Greinke (0-3) gave up seven earned runs, two homers and four walks, all single-game highs this season.

“I think we know the things that he likes to do and the areas he likes to attack,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “He’s a creature of habit. It’s worked very well for a long time, and he’s not going to make adjustments unless he has to. I know that his changeup wasn’t landing, and we saw that it wasn’t landing early, and that was a big advantage for us.”

Whit Merrifield, Bobby Witt Jr. and Hunter Dozier hit bases-empty homers 13 pitches into the game, and the Royals added another run in the first inning for a 4-0 lead before suffering their second demoralizing loss in as many days.

Kansas City, which has lost five in a row and seven of nine, failed to hold a 6-0 lead after seven innings in a 7-6 home loss to Minnesota on Sunday.

Smith and Walker homered in the bottom of the first to cut the Kansas City lead to 4-3, and Arizona tied it at 5-all in third inning when Greinke walked the first two he faced and both scored.

“The game started off, the ball seemed like it was flying, a lot of home runs being hit,” Greinke said. “And then had some close pitches called balls and kind of got scared to throw strikes a little bit. I think is what happened.”

Greinke: 'I didn't attack the zone enough'

Marte’s two-out double off Joel Payamps drove in two for a 7-5 lead, with both runs charged to Greinke.

The Diamondbacks had eight runs against Greinke in nine innings in his two previous starts against them, both in Houston.

“It was great, especially against a guy with that kind of repertoire and that sort of reputation,” Smith said of the approach against Greinke. “Especially going down 4-nothing in the first inning, we wanted to see some pitches and grind out some good ABs."

J.B. Wendelken (1-1) got out of a bases-loaded situation after replacing injured starter Zach Davies in the fourth inning for the Diamondbacks, who have won four of five.

Davies gave up eight hits and five runs before being knocked out of the game with a right leg contusion when he was struck by Witt’s line drive that loaded the bases with two outs.

X-rays on Davies were negative and he is to get a C-T scan Tuesday, Lovullo said, calling into question his availability for his next start Sunday.

Greinke joined the Diamondbacks on a six-year, $206.5 million contract in 2016, when his average yearly salary of $34.4 million was the highest in major league history.

Greinke had given up two homers and four walks in his first eight starts over 44 innings this season. He struck out a season-high five.
