INDIANAPOLIS - Fort Hays State Women's Basketball remained 10th&nbsp;in the latest NCAA Central Region Rankings, released on Wednesday (Mar. 1). The Tigers are one of six MIAA programs ranked in the top 10 of the region. The Tigers are 19-11 overall on the year, including a 17-11 record against Division II opponents and a 17-10 in-region record. Fort Hays State has played the toughest strength-of-schedule in the region at .571. Since the last region rankings release FHSU played Nebraska-Kearney, the top ranked team in the region, which only upped the Tigers' strength of schedule value even more. Fort Hays State has been selected to play in each of the last five regional championships and in seven of the last eight tournaments. FHSU has been the top overall seed in the region four times over the last eight years and has played in a trio of regional finals. The Tigers will play Missouri Western, the region's eighth-ranked team in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament on Friday (Mar. 1) in Kansas City. FHSU is 1-1 against Missouri Western so far this season. With the way the region rankings currently sit, it is very likely that the MIAA will have two very strong teams not make the NCAA Tournament this season, since the GAC will get an automatic bid and Southern Nazarene is that conference's highest ranked team at No. 9 in the region. Eight teams from the Central Region are selected to compete in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament. 🏀 Tiger Men 10th in Latest NCAA Central Region Rankings

HAYS - Sarah Zimmerman notched a lot of "firsts" in her time wrestling at Hays High School. The first four time state qualifier. The first four time state medalist. The first state champion.&nbsp;

Today she is the first from the girls' wrestling program at Hays High to sign a National Letter of Intent. Zimmerman has signed with Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

Zimmerman capped a stellar four-year career with a state title at 110 pounds this past week at the 6-5A State Tournament. She recorded three pins and a technical fall in her four matches. She finished 31-1 on the season.

Zimmerman also finished as a medalist her freshman season but didn't get wrestle the final match. At that time, the girls tournament was held in one day. By rule, a wrestler has a limit of matches in one day. She had met the limit in the round prior to her medal round.&nbsp;

As a sophomore and junior Zimmerman found herself in the championship match, but did not secure a title. A wrestler that shows little emotion after matches, finally let out the emotion that had been building all season long following her 2023 championship.

Coach Heath Meder listed off Zimmerman's accomplishments which included 111 victories. A feat not easily accomplished considering there were few tournaments for Zimmerman to attend early in her high school career. The Kansas State High School Association made girls wrestling in Kansas a recognized sport just in time for Zimmerman's freshman season.

Meder said the on the mat accolades were the easy things to list. It was Zimmerman's ability to help lead a brand new girls program that was invaluable. Zimmerman had years of experience prior to high school. Her freshman season was Meder's second as the boys head coach and Zimmerman's strong work ethic on and off the mat made him a better coach.

Zimmerman chose Simpson College because of not only the academics but also the strong wrestling program that is in place, saying she want to wrestle as much as she can&nbsp; as long as she can.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — In their final game at Allen Fieldhouse, Jalen Wilson and fellow Kansas senior Kevin McCullar Jr. not only kept the hardscrabble Jayhawks in front of Texas Tech most of the night but made the play that sealed the win.

Wilson had 21 points to lead all scorers, McCullar added 14 points with a critical basket in the final minute, and the third-ranked Jayhawks held off the Red Raiders 67-63 on Tuesday to clinch at least a share of their NCAA-leading 64th regular-season conference championship.

“It felt so good to win,” Wilson said. “I just wanted to cherish the moment.”

Dajuan Harris had 16 points for the Jayhawks (25-5, 13-4), who would capture the outright title if No. 9 Texas loses to No. 22 TCU on Wednesday night. Otherwise, the Jayhawks would need to beat the Longhorns on Saturday.

Kansas was left clinging to a 61-60 lead after the Red Raiders' De'Vion Harmon could only make the second of two free throws with 56.4 seconds left. But after the Jayhawks raced up the floor, and Wilson failed to get an open look, a loose ball ended up in the hands of McCullar, who merely had to lay it in for a three-point lead.

“It was a loose ball. I seen Harmon reach for it and I was like, ‘I need to get this ball and get this bucket,’” said McCullar, who transferred from Texas Tech. “Nobody was around so I just stuck it in. That play was huge.”

“If anybody was going to make that play, it was Kevin,” Wilson added. "That's just the type of guy he is."

Texas Tech still had time left and called a timeout to set up a play. But Pop Isaacs threw a driving layup off the side of the backboard, and Harris scored in transition for the Jayhawks to put the game out of reach.

“We had to decide for the 3 or try to score and get something quick and went with that,” Red Raiders coach Mark Adams said of the game's crucial possession. “Didn't get the call.”

The Jayhawks improved to 22-1 against Texas Tech (16-14, 5-12) in the Phog with their seventh consecutive win overall, and they have not lost on senior night since the 1983-84 season.

“They made some big plays down the stretch, especially the last couple of minutes. That's what Kansas does,” Adams said. “With their homecourt advantage, they know how to win late in games.”

Harmon had 15 points to lead Texas Tech, which was just 3 of 16 from the 3-point line. Kevin Obanor added 14 points, Fardaws Aimaq had 13 points and 18 rebounds, and Isaacs finished with 11 points.

Wearing retro red uniforms for their senior sendoff, the Jayhawks got off to a frigid start against the defensive-minded Red Raiders. McCullar eventually dropped a couple of 3s minutes apart to give Kansas some breathing room, and Wilson began driving for contested layups, helping the Jayhawks forge a 30-21 lead by the break.

Texas Tech was 1 of 11 from beyond the arc and committed seven turnovers over the first 20 scattershot minutes.

The Red Raiders' cold streak ended there. They scored five quick points to start the second half, nearly wiping out their deficit in their first few trips down floor, and Obanor began to get easy buckets in the paint.

While the Jayhawks kept answering every time Texas Tech got within a possession, they could never put the game away. And when it appeared as if they might as Gradey Dick scored his first points on two free throws to make it 60-55 with about three minutes to go, the Red Raiders answered with back-to-back baskets at the other end.

It wasn't until McCullar's bucket and Harris' breakway layup in the final minute that Kansas could finally celebrate.

Texas Tech was making a late run toward an NCAA Tournament bid with four straight wins, including consecutive victories over Kansas State and Texas. But back-to-back close losses to TCU and Kansas could make a run to the Big 12 Tournament title the only way to make it back to the dance.

Kansas has more Quad 1 wins than any other team in the country, and advanced metrics also love the Jayhawks, who once again reign supreme in the nation's toughest conference. That's probably enough to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but winning Saturday along with a Big 12 tourney title could get them the top seed overall.

The regular season concludes Saturday when Texas Tech plays Oklahoma State and Kansas visits Texas.

🏀 No. 3 Kansas tops Texas Tech to clinch Big 12 title share

HAYS - Hays High opened postseason play as the eight seed in 5A West. The Indians hosted the ninth seeded Kapaun Crusaders.

It took four extra minutes, but Hays secured a spot in the sub-state championship with a 53-52 win over the Crusaders.

The teams were tied at the end of the first and second quarter thanks to runs by both teams. Kapaun went up by five on a 7-0 first quarter run that was answered by a 6-0 Indian run to tie the game at nine.

The Indians opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run to lead 18-11 with 4:20 left before halftime. Hays wouldn't score again in the half and Kapaun tied the game on a 9-0 run by halftime.

The Indian field goal drought lasted 8:45 seconds, a stretch were they would only score two points from the free throw line. The Crusaders took advantage with a 27-20 lead and eventually led by a game high nine at 32-23 at the two minute mark of the third quarter. Like they did at the end of the first, Hays ended the third with a 6-0 run and cut the deficit down to 32-29.

The Indians were able to grab the lead back at 38-37 and extend that to a 40-37 advantage with 3:30 remaining. Hays would only score one more point rest of the game, but only allow three points for a 41 all time at the end of regulation.

Hays opened the overtime with a three pointer which was their only field goal attempt of the overtime frame. The Indians never trailed and the score was never tied. Hays held three leads of five points in overtime but Kapaun knocked down a pair of three and three point play. The final three from Kapaun hit as time expired but with the Indian four point lead only closed the gap to 53-52.

Hays moves on to Saturday's sub-state championship game at 14-7. Kapaun's season ends at 12-9.

Molly Martin led the Indians in scoring at 16 points and Katie Linenberger added 12. McCoy Phister scored 14 for Kapaun and Sophia Gimino was in double figures at 13.

🏀 Hays girls hold off Kapaun

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs shook off a slow start
on their way to a 52-40 win over Rawlins County Tuesday in the first-round of
the 2A Ellis sub-state.

TMP (15-8) struggled to start the game scoring just four first
quarter points while turning it over nine time as Rawlins County built an 8-4
lead. 

After falling behind by a game-high six points, at 10-4, to
open the second quarter TMP was able to turn up the presser on the Buffaloes (13-8)
forcing them into eight second quarter turnovers while the Monarchs outscored
the Buffaloes 15-7 in the second quarter as Claire Schippers and Brooke
Koenigsman hit back-to-back three pointers to close out the first half putting
the Monarchs up 19-15 heading into halftime. 

TMP’s Gracyn Shippers scored eight of her 12 points in the third
quarter while the Monarchs held Rawlins County to just nine points building a
38-24 through three quarters. 

The Monarchs extended their lead to a game-high 18 points in
the fourth quarter, at 48-30, on back-to-back field goals from Jaci VonLintel
and a Gracyn Schippers layup.

Rawlins County scored a late fury of field goals when the
Monarchs took out their starters as the climbed within 12 at 52-40.

Jacin VonLintel scored a game-high 17 points and added 12
rebounds. Gracyn Schippers also scored in double-figures with 12 points.

TMP will take on the top-seed Smith Center in the first
semifinal game at Ellis Friday at 6 p.m.

This year's indoor meet is being held March 10-11 in Virginia Beach, Va. Six Tigers will represent the men's team in the 4x400m relay, pole vault, heptathlon and 400m dash, with two student-athletes representing the women's team in the pentathlon. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State is among the receiving votes section of the latest NABC Division II Top 25 Poll released on February 28. This is the fifth time this season the Tigers have been in the receiving votes list. For MIAA teams referenced in the poll, FHSU joins Emporia State in the receiving votes section, while Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma continue to rank in the Top 25. Northwest Missouri State is ranked No. 2, while Central Oklahoma holds the No. 12 spot. The four teams are the top four seeds in the MIAA Tournament. Jonsson was also named to the All-Defensive Team for a second-straight year. Hammeke is now a three-time All-MIAA selection. He has elevated in selection each year, going from an honorable mention pick in 2020-21 to second team in 2021-22, and now first team in 2022-23. He was also the MIAA Freshman of the Year back in 2020-21. Hammeke is averaging 16.6 points and 3.6 assists per game through 28 contests this season. At the end of the regular season, he ranked sixth in the MIAA in points per game, fifth in assists per game, and 10th&nbsp;in steals per game, while leading the conference in minutes per game (36.4). He also ranked fifth in the MIAA in free-throw percentage with an 81.5 percent success rate. Hammeke scored in double figures in 25 of 28 regular season games and reached 20 or more points seven times and at least 30 points twice. This season, he became the 24th&nbsp;player in FHSU Men's Basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career for the Black and Gold and just the fourth player in program history to have both 1,000 points and 300 assists in a career. Nnanabu picked up his first All-MIAA selection in just his second year on the floor at FHSU. He ranks second in scoring and assists for FHSU, averaging 10.2 points and 1.8 assists per game. He reached double figures in scoring 14 times during the regular season, including a career-high 19 points four times. He enters the MIAA Tournament with exactly 400 points in his career. Jonsson was an All-Defensive Team selection for the second straight year, but picked up his first honor on the All-MIAA Team with an honorable mention nod this season. He has elevated his offensive production this season, scoring 8.3 points per game for the Tigers during the regular season and reaching double figures in scoring 12 times. He has turned into one of FHSU's top 3-point shooting threats with 36 makes beyond the arc this year, leading the team with a 46.8 percentage from long range. He headlines one of the top defensive teams in NCAA Division II, helping the Tigers to the third-lowest scoring defense, allowing just 57.4 points per game, and the ninth-lowest opponent field goal percentage at 39.7. HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs run their way streak to 18 straight Monday
with a 68-48 win over Smith Center.

Griffin Schumacher opened the game with back-to-back three
pointers, scoring nine of his career-high 17 points as the Monarchs (19-2, 11-0 MCL) opened the
game on a 10-3 run.

Smith Center (3-18, 1-10 MCL) was able to keep it close early, drawing within
four twice, the last time at 12-8 but the Monarchs closed the first quarter
with a seven-point lead 21-14.

The Monarchs leaned on 6’8 big man Dylan Werth in the second
quarter as he scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the second quarter.
During that stretch he surpassed 1,000 career points helping the Monarchs take
a 41-23 lead into the halftime break.

TMP outscored Smith Center 9-2 to start the second half and
built a 25-point lead at 50-25.

Smith Center pulled within 18 twice in the fourth quarter before
the Monarchs secured the 68-48 victory.

Werth led the way with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Luke Rome
added a double-double of his own with 12 points and 13 rebounds and Griffin
Schumacher hit five three pointers and finished with 17 points.

TMP will take on Rawlins County at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday in
Ellis.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Seniors Markquis Nowell and Keyontae&nbsp;swept the Big 12 weekly player of the week honors for the second time this season on Monday with Nowell earning Player of the Week for the third time and Johnson picking up his fifth Newcomer of the Week honor after helping No. 11/11 Kansas State earn regular-season sweeps of No. 9/10 Baylor and Oklahoma State last week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It marks just the second time in school history that K-State has swept both Big 12 honors in the same week and the first time since the tandem did it for the first time on January 9. In the 2-game stretch, Nowell averaged a near double-double with 18.0 points and 9.0 assists to go with 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in 38.5 minutes per game. He went a near perfect 19-of-20 from the free throw line, including a 10-of-10 performance in the win over No. 9/10 Baylor on Feb. 21. He saw his streak of consecutive free throws made end at 32 straight with his miss in the first half at Oklahoma State on Saturday. Nowell collected his team-leading sixth double-double (points/assists) with 14 points and 10 assists in the win over the Bears, which included zero turnovers. He became the 12th&nbsp;Division I player since 1996-97 to post at least 10 assists with 0 turnovers vs. an AP Top 10 opponent and the first Wildcat to do it in any game in school history. The top five spots in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll remained the same. The rest of <a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">the AP Top 25</a> was a big jumble.

Houston
 was No. 1 for the second straight week in the poll released Monday, 
receiving 49 first-place votes from a 62-person media panel. No. 2 
Alabama had five first-place votes and No. 3 Kansas received eight.

UCLA and Purdue rounded out the top five. The Boilermakers held at No. 5 despite losing to No. 15 Indiana.

Kansas State was No. 11 in the rankings, jumping up three spots.

In
 the rest of the poll, only No. 20 Providence kept the same position 
from last week as teams get ready for conference tournaments next week 
and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/march-madness-2023-e8fe1bfd7964f938781458952670f51a">the start of March Madness</a>.

Alabama
 held its spot after winning two games despite a challenging week off 
the court. Brandon Miller had a pair of huge games since <a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-sports-tuscaloosa-alabama-crimson-tide-top-25-college-basketball-today-39eab4a038324d58910da79372722ad1">police alleged</a> that he brought a gun to former teammate Darius Miles, who is charged with capital murder in a fatal shooting.

 Miller’s regular pregame introduction with a Crimson Tide staffer

Marquette has made a quick rise under coach Shaka Smart.

The Golden Eagles wrapped up a share of their first Big East regular-season title in a decade with <a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-depaul-blue-demons-marquette-golden-eagles-mens-top-25-college-basketball-today-7011b6b50eaa6fe76b4e3e89b89379d6">a 90-84 win over DePaul</a> on Saturday and climbed four spots in this week’s poll to No. 6. It is Marquette’s highest ranking hitting No. 1 in 1977-78.

Houston moved into the top spot last week and held onto it after a pair of routs last week. The <a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-houston-cougars-east-carolina-pirates-top-25-college-basketball-today-tramon-mark-b716c6a8c936464df3484f2bc7ae403b">Cougars' 76-57 win at East Carolina</a>
 on Saturday clinched the American Athletic Association regular-season 
championship, the fourth time in five seasons they've at least shared 
the conference title.

“Our kids know how to win — I say that a 
lot,” Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said. “But we’ve figured out how to 
play our system, be unselfish.”

Marquette 
matched No. 14 UConn and No. 18 San Diego State with the week's biggest 
jump among teams in the poll, each climbing four spots.

No. 13 Virginia took the biggest tumble, losing seven spots following losses to Boston College and North Carolina last week.

No. 21 Maryland is back in the AP Top 25 after wins over Minnesota and then-No. 23 Northwestern.

No.
 23 Kentucky returned to the poll after a seven-week absence. The 
Wildcats had a rapid fall from being No. 4 in the preseason poll, but 
reeled off wins over No. 12 Tennessee, Florida and Auburn.

No. 25 Pittsburgh is ranked for the first time since 2016 after beating Georgia Tech and Syracuse last week.

🏀 KU No. 3, K-State No. 11 in latest AP hoops poll

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams both finished in the top five at the MIAA Indoor Championships this weekend, with the Tiger men ranking fourth and the women placing fifth. The fourth-place finish for the men is their best-ever finish indoors since joining the MIAA in 2007, while the women's fifth-place ranking is tied for their top finish in the league. The Tigers received six All-MIAA awards on Sunday, including the MIAA Champion 4x400m men's relay team. Two women's school records went down on the final day, while the teams combined to post nine NCAA Division II national qualifying marks. For the week, the Tigers picked up 10 All-MIAA honors (seven men, three women) and recorded 22 national qualifying marks (12 men, 10 women). The Tiger men accumulated 76 points on the week, just three behind third place, while the women finished fifth with 45 points.
