👟 FHSU multis shine on day one of MIAA Indoor Championships

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams opened competition at the 2023 MIAA Indoor Championships on Friday with the women's pentathlon and the first half of the men's heptathlon. Mattie Rossi broke her own school record in the pentathlon, earning All-MIAA honors after placing third, while Nolan Churchman leads the field with three events to go in the heptathlon.

Rossi collected her fourth All-MIAA award after adding 51 points to her school record. She opened the day with 980 points in the 60m hurdles, matching her season-best mark with a national qualifying time of 8.67. She set a new PR in the shot put and ran an indoor PR of 2:18.16 in the 800m. Her point total currently ranks seventh this season in Division II.

Taylor Savolt earned a sixth-place finish after raking in a personal-best 3,732 points. She currently ranks 11th on the national performance chart this season. Savolt began the day with a personal-best time of 8.88 in the 60m hurdles, picking up 935 points in the process. She also hit a PR in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-4.25.

Chloe Stanley tallied a national-qualifying mark of 3,544 points, finishing eighth to add another team point for the Tigers. She surpassed the national qualifying time in the 60m hurdles, collecting 956 points with a PR time of 8.78. Stanley went on to clear a personal-best 4-9 in the high jump and run a PR time of 2:20.51 in the 800m.

On the men's side, Churchman sits in first place through four events of the heptathlon with 3,013 points. He recorded the top mark in the field in three of the four events Friday, including the 60m dash (7.03, 872 points), long jump (22-9.25, 799) and high jump (6-5.5, 776).

Two other Tigers rank inside the top eight, including Luke Hampl in sixth with 2,514 points and Jonah Remsberg in seventh with 2,497 points. Hampl took in 716 points in the 60m dash with a time of 7.49, while Remsberg collected over 700 points in two events (60m - 7.37 - 755, LJ - 21-7, 716). Ethan Salmans enters day two in ninth place with 2,471 points, just 19 out of eighth place.

The Tiger women currently sit in third place with 10 points after one event scored. Day two is set to begin on Saturday (Feb. 25) at 11:30 a.m. with the final three events of the heptathlon before the rest of the team joins in beginning at 2 p.m.
