DODGE CITY – The Hays High girls’ golf team finished second
at Thursday’s Dodge City Invitational at Mariah Hill Golf Course. The Indians
shot a 340 which was 26 shots behind first place Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

The Indians played two in the top-10 led by Katie Dinkel who finished
fifth with a 5-over-par 78. Abbie Norris fired an 84 and finished ninth.

The top three placers were all under par led by Kapaun’s Meg
Tilma who shot a 6-under-par 67. Wichita Collegiate’s Margaret Ulrich shot a 70
and Kinslea Jones of Maize fired a 71. All three are sophomores.

⛳ HHS girls' runner-up in Dodge City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez’s sacrifice fly in the ninth gave the Kansas City Royals a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night, avoiding a three-game sweep.

The Royals entered the ninth trailing 1-0, but Emmanuel Clase walked the first two batters he faced. MJ Melendez drove home Kyle Isbel with the tying run and Perez drove in Nicky Lopez with the game-winner.

The Guardians still lead the AL Central by two games over the Twins and White Sox

Scott Barlow (6-4) earned the win. Clase (2-4) took the loss. He blew his first save since May 9 and had converted 25 straight opportunities.

“He just lost the plate early and proved he’s human,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said of Clase. “It’s been a long time since something like that has happened. He tried to fight his way back, but 1-0 is a hard way to win. We walked some other guys too and it finally ended up biting us.”

Zack Greinke allowed one run on six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out two. He returned to the rotation after being on the Injured List since Aug. 24 with right forearm tightness.

“For them to be able to put together at-bats that they did, they made him work,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “We always talk about that. Just pass it on to the next guy. Trust the next guy to get the job done. That was a great job against a very difficult closer.”

Cleveland starter Cody Morris, making his second major league start, allowed two hits in the first and then retired nine straight batters on his way to four scoreless innings.

“That was much more what we were looking for,” Francona said. “He was able to use his changeup. Probably could have gone farther. I just thought that with the way the lineup was set up it was a good time to get him out. I thought he did very well.”

Morris was pleased with his effort, once he settled in.

“In the first inning I was still battling some nerves, but I feel like I settled in well,” Morris said. “I felt a lot more relaxed after I got out of that first inning. I felt more in tune and fluid.

“There’s always room for improvement. I haven’t reflected on the start yet, but I’m sure there are pitches I could have executed better.”

The Guardians scored first on an RBI single by Owen Miller. Oscar Gonzalez led off the fourth with a double to the wall in right center. He went to third on a groundout to first and scored when Miller blooped one to short center.

Gonzalez also doubled in the eighth, but was stranded at third. He had a game-winning double in the 10th inning of Monday’s Cleveland victory.

Guardians RHP Aaron Civale, who is on the Injured List with a right wrist strain, threw for the third straight day, increasing the intensity each day. He’ll throw a long-toss on Thursday and a bullpen on Friday, according to manager Terry Francona…RHP Zach Plesac, on the IL with a fracture of his fifth metacarpel bone on his right hand, had another exam, but Francona says there is no timetable for his return.

Both clubs will have Thursday off. The Guardians head to Minnesota for a three-game series with the second-place Twins Friday night. RHP Cal Quantrill (11-5, 3.55 ERA) will start for Cleveland while RHP Dylan Bundy (8-6, 4.34 ERA) will start for the Twins.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Emmanuel Sanders would rather chase his young kids around now than hunt down any more passes over the middle.

The veteran wide receiver announced his retirement Wednesday after a 12-year NFL career that included six seasons in Denver, where he helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50.

“The game of football is tough on the body, and you know I lost a close friend in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-atlanta-denver-denver-broncos-4caa9b3a01f58f451f9645b8c08acc1e">Demaryius Thomas</a>," who died last December of a seizure, Sanders said. "And for me, it's about longevity of life now. I had a heck of a career, 12 years, three Super Bowls. I feel like what else do I have to prove?

“I wake up in the morning, drop the kids off at school. I'm making sandwiches for my daughter. I see the beauty in that,” Sanders said. “And I'm happy. So for me, there's never really a ‘right’ time to hang it up. But I'm happy to hang it up now.”

Sanders said he plans to do some television broadcasting in retirement.

Sanders started his career in Pittsburgh in 2010 as a third-round pick out of SMU and he joined the Broncos as a free agent in 2014 after coming close to signing with the rival Chiefs — he was at their headquarters about to sign with Kansas City when John Elway called him with a better offer.

Teaming up with Thomas and Peyton Manning, he called Denver “wide receiver heaven” upon his arrival in Colorado and over the next three years he'd catch 279 passes for 3,847 yards and 21 touchdowns.

He played in three Super Bowls, with the Steelers as a rookie, the Broncos and the 49ers, who acquired him from Denver midway through the 2019 season.

Sanders, who played for the Saints in 2020 and the Bills in 2021, finished his career with 704 receptions for 9,245 yards and 51 touchdowns in the regular season and another 52 catches for 622 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs.

At 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, Sanders was viewed as a slot receiver coming out of college, but in Denver he successfully lined up outside opposite Thomas.

“Any time I go out in public the first thing somebody tells me is you do not look like an NFL receiver,” Sanders said. “And I'll tell them, ‘Go look on YouTube. You’ll see me coming across the middle and I'm taking every hit, I'm making every catch.'”

At his retirement news conference Wednesday, the Broncos displayed a photo of Sanders and Thomas doing “snow angels” in the blue and orange confetti after beating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the AFC championship to reach Super Bowl 50.

Sanders called it one of the highlights of his career.

Another came two weeks later when he helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 over the heavily favored Carolina Panthers.

And every season without fail, Reid finds a way to answer the question without ever really answering it.

Turns out the same goes for his record in season openers.

The Chiefs head into their game at Arizona on Sunday having won seven consecutive openers, including three against teams that were destined for the playoffs and one that reached the Super Bowl. And overall, Reid is 8-1 since taking over the Chiefs before the 2013 season, including a perfect mark in five openers played on the road.

“I don't know,” Reid said Wednesday amid another round of verbal shoulder-shrugging. “I appreciate the question, but right now, I don't care about any of that. We just go execute and do the best we can this time of year.”

The reality is the Chiefs simply do that better than everybody else.

Take turnovers, which tend to pop up most among the unprepared. The Chiefs have not committed one in their last four openers, while their own defense has taken the ball away seven times over that span, and the last time they coughed it up — at New England in 2017 — they atoned for the miscue by piling up 537 yards of total offense.

In fact, the Chiefs are plus-6 in turnover margin in their nine openers under Reid, and that number would be even more remarkable if not for three turnovers in their opening loss in Tennessee to start the 2014 season.

Only two of their last seven season-opening wins have been by less than a touchdown.

It helps to have Patrick Mahomes under center.

The Chiefs quarterback has completed better than 71% of his passes in openers over the past four years, averaging more than 295 yards per game, and has thrown 13 touchdown passes without a single interception.

“We've put in the practice. We've put in the work,” Mahomes said, “and I'm excited to see these guys in game action. The preseason is one thing, but when you get to the regular season, you want to get out there and show what you can do.”

Everybody around the league has put in the work, though; all teams desire to start 1-0 every bit as much as the Chiefs.

So the question remains: What makes Reid and his bunch nearly unstoppable in Week 1?

“It's all about the preparation with Andy, year-in and year-out,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. “Training camp is extremely tough and I think that translates to game week. The way he prepares us to be physically and mentally ready for when the season approaches, I think it's beneficial for us as a team.”

It probably doesn't feel like that in camp, when Reid insists the Chiefs uproot from their training base in Kansas City for three weeks of dorm life on a college campus. It's there that Reid and his lieutenants push their players through sweltering late-summer practices with a decidedly old-school mentality designed to foster comradery and toughness.

“Bonding becomes important and you bond when you've got to do something tough,” Reid said. “I know some of them were hurting but they got up and they pushed through. That foundation will pay off for them down the road here.”

🏈Chiefs aim to improve to 9-1 in openers under Andy Reid

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's golf team opened the 2022 season with a 13th-place finish at the Central Region Fall Preview this week (Sept. 6-7). The 16-team, 86-player event was held at Adams Pointe Golf Club, a par-72, 5,910-yard layout. The Tigers climbed one spot from round one to round two after improving their team score by nine shots. Kuffel came away victorious in the first race of the year for the Tigers, winning the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic by nearly 20 seconds. The Peoria, Ariz. native traversed the three-mile course in 17:39.1, helping Fort Hays State to the team title with 21 points. Owner of a pair of school records in track and field, Kuffel shared the conference honor with Northwest Missouri State's Caroline Cunningham, who won the five-kilometer Bearcat Open in 18:15.5. He had seven saves and picked up his 14th career shutout in the 2-0 win at MSU Denver. A couple days earlier, his only goal allowed for the week was on a penalty kick by Rockhurst. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Shane Bieber pitched eight sharp innings, José Ramírez drove in two runs and the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 Tuesday night.

Bieber (9-8) allowed one run and four hits. He struck out seven and walked one.

“I didn’t think (Bieber) had his best curveball,” manager Terry Francona said. “But with his fastball and his cutter, he really was effective. Some of the balls they squared up were in the middle of the park, and this is a big park. So that helps, too.”

In his last eight starts, Bieber has 1.79 ERA (11 runs in 55 1/3 innings). He is now 5-0 in his career against the Royals.

Bieber said going out for the ninth was never up for discussion.

“You always want more,” he said, “but it was an easy decision.”

“I threw a lot of cutters,” he said. “The curveball got a little better as the game went along. I was still able to get a little swing and miss. I just tried to primarily land it for strikes.”

The Guardians moved 1 1/2 games of Minnesota, which was rained out and will play a doubleheader Wednesday at the New York Yankees.

The Royals lost their 82nd game, meaning they’ll have a losing record for the sixth straight season.

Salvador Perez hit his 20th home run for Kansas City, the sixth year he’s reached the mark. He is tied with Mike Sweeney on the team list for the second-most seasons with at least 20 — George Brett holds the franchise record with eight.

“He hit a fastball about six inches off the plate,” Bieber said. “He’s got to be the strongest man alive.”

James Karinchak pitched the ninth for his first save.

Kris Bubic (2-11) allowed three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Ramírez hit a bases-loaded, two-run single in the third for a 2-0 lead. He has 108 RBIs this season.

Myles Straw’s RBI single in the seventh extended the Guardians’ lead. Cleveland added another run on a single by Owen Miller in the eighth.

“My stats stink,” Straw said, batting .202 after getting two hits. “But we’re playing great as a team. That’s what really matters. We’re here as a team and we’re trying to get to the playoffs and win a championship. It’s little things to help your team win.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Óscar González hit a two-run double in the 10th inning and the Cleveland Guardians snapped a five-game losing streak, beating the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Monday night to regain sole possession of the AL Central lead.

Cleveland moved a game ahead of Minnesota, which lost 5-2 to the New York Yankees. The third-place Chicago White Sox are one game behind the Twins.

Josh Naylor homered for the Guardians, and Andrés Giménez scored twice.

Cleveland starter Triston McKenzie acknowledged the victory was a relief for the Guardians.

“We talked a little about it on the bus last night," he said. "We haven’t been playing our best baseball. We all know it. It hasn’t dimmed our light. We’re still going to go out and play hard.”

Drew Waters hit his first major league home run for Kansas City, and Salvador Perez’s one-out RBI double in the eighth tied it at 4.

Eli Morgan (5-3) won in relief, and Emmanuel Clase earned his 31st save in 33 opportunities. He allowed a run in the 10th but stranded the potential tying run at first base.

“Getting the second run is probably more important,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said about González's clutch hit. “They’re going to start with the guy on second just like we did.”

With the automatic runner on second, Kansas City walked José Ramírez to begin the 10th. One out later, González doubled to deep center field off Carlos Hernández (0-5).

“I faced him a couple of times in the minors, so I knew how he attacked me in the past. I just tried to put the ball in play,” González said.

Cleveland had an opportunity in extra innings Sunday against Seattle but couldn’t come through after the opposing pitcher walked Ramírez with the automatic runner on second.

“I get it,” Francona said. “José is one of the best hitters in the game and you’re setting up the double play. I totally get it. It was nice to see guys come through.”

The Guardians scored two runs on four singles in the second. Giménez and Tyler Freeman had one-out singles before Austin Hedges’ sacrifice back to starter Brady Singer scored Giménez. Myles Straw then singled with two outs to score Freeman.

McKenzie cruised through four innings, but the Royals reached him for a couple of runs in the fifth. Michael Massey worked a walk and scored on Waters’ 400-foot shot to the Royals’ bullpen in right field.

Before the game, Francona was asked which of the Royals' seven rookie position players he was most impressed with. He said Waters had the best skill set.

Naylor gave the Guardians the lead back with a leadoff home run in the fifth, a 421-foot drive to right-center.

Giménez then scored an unearned run. He doubled and went to third on Singer’s wild pickoff attempt before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Freeman.

Michael A. Taylor’s sacrifice fly in the sixth drew the Royals within a run and ended McKenzie’s night.

Guardians: RHP Aaron Civale, on the injured list since Aug. 30 with right forearm inflammation, played catch. Francona said he’d see how Civale responds Tuesday, but he thinks Civale may be ready to long-toss soon.

Royals: RHP Zack Greinke, on the injured list with right forearm tightness, might return soon. “He’s good to go,” manager Mike Matheny said.

The Tigers scored on a corner kick in the first half to take the lead and the defense kept the Rangers out of shooting position to secure the win and their third shutout of the season. FHSU improved to 3-0-1 on the year and NWOSU took its first loss of the year falling to 2-1-1. Fort Hays State made its presence known on offense in the first half taking 11 shots and placing three on goal. The game-winning goal came from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6678">Gracen Chaney</a>&nbsp;as she expertly bent a corner kick between the posts where it bounced off of the keeper's mitts into the net. The Tiger defense locked down the Rangers holding them to only three shots in the first half with none of them on target. FHSU finished with 17 shots, putting five on target, while NWOSU managed six shots with two placed on goal. Keeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6693">Isabel Robben</a>&nbsp;picked up a pair of saves in her third shutout effort of the season and Rachel Brown managed four for the Rangers. defensive end Lonnie Phelps Jr. was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive
Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Phelps made his
presence known in his KU debut with 7 tackles, 3.0 sacks and 4.0
tackles-for-loss.

Phelps, a transfer from the University of Miami (OH), posted the
most sacks by a Jayhawk since 2016, while his 4.0 tackles-for-loss were the
most since 2017.

Phelps led a defensive unit that accounted for 12.0
tackles-for-loss, 5.0 sacks, and limited Tennessee Tech to 97 passing yards and
190 total yards of offense. The last time the Jayhawk defense kept an opponent
under 100 yards of passing and under 200 yards of total offense came on Sept.
4, 2010 against North Dakota State.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Phelps graded out as a
96.4, which is the highest among defensive ends in the country during week one.
Phelps’ 3.0 sacks are tied for the second most in college football this season.

Phelps becomes the first Jayhawk to win Big 12 Defensive Player
of the Week honors since Joe Dineen on November 12, 2018 and the first Kansas
defensive end to earn the award since November 19, 2016 (Dorance Armstrong
Jr.).

The Jayhawks will
open Big 12 play on September 10, when the Jayhawks travel to Morgantown,
W.Va., to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
CT on ESPN+.

DENVER - The Fort Hays State men's soccer team defeated MSU Denver 2-0 on Sunday, moving to 3-0 all-time against the Roadrunners. Redshirt-freshman Tre Smith had an&nbsp;impressive debut scoring three both of the Tiger goals within a ten minute span. FHSU improved to 2-1-1 overall, while MSU-Denver took their first loss and also now sits at 2-1-1. The Tigers hopped on the attack quickly in the first half as they took nine shots and placed seven on goal. Smith put the Tigers on the board when he received a long pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7069">Inigo Jimenez</a>&nbsp;and chipped it past the keeper in the 24th&nbsp;minute.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6656">Anders Sandsto</a>&nbsp;was also credited with an assist on the play. Shortly after, a saved point-blank shot from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6640">Blake Arndt</a>&nbsp;rebounded to Smith in the box and he bent the ball past the keeper to give the Tigers breathing room. FHSU managed 10 total shots in the contest with eight being on target. MSU-Denver lined up 11 shots and placed seven on goal. DETROIT (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr.'s eighth-inning double drove in the go-ahead run and the Kansas City Royals edged the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Sunday.

Witt Jr., who on Saturday became the fifth first-year player in major league history to have 20 home runs and 20 stoles bases, reached base three times. He has 24 go-ahead RBIs this season.

Royals manager Mike Matheny said Witt is emerging as a clutch hitter who can be compared with Salvador Perez.

“We make a big deal about Salvy and how when he gets in those situations, he's earned that reputation," Matheny said. “It's almost like he thrives on it. Bobby's starting to take that ownership onto himself, too, that this is a spot I want to be in, this is a spot that I thrive in.”

MJ Melendez scored a run and drove in another while Michael A. Taylor had three hits and scored a run.

The Royals, who hit four home runs in a 12-2 win on Saturday, struggled to push across runs most of the game. They left 13 runners on base and went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

“A couple of missed opportunities,” Matheny said. “Usually when we're having these conversations at the end of games and we leave money out there, less than two outs and a man on third, we're talking about what could've and should've happened. But they continued to stay with it.”

Winning pitcher Dylan Coleman (4-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Scott Barlow collected his 21st save.

Royals starter Max Castillo, recalled from Triple-A Omaha before the game, allowed two runs and five hits and struck out five in 4 2/3 innings.

Detroit starter Matt Manning gave up two runs and five hits in four innings. Gregory Soto (2-8) took the loss.
