Millions of Americans fall each year, and one’s&nbsp;fall risk increases
dramatically during the winter. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause
of fatal injury and non-fatal trauma. In fact, every 19 minutes an older adult
dies from a fall. Further, falls have a substantial financial toll and
collectively cost over $50 billion annually. Here are 5 tips for preventing
slips, trips, and falls.

No matter the
weather, we should always strive to wear proper footwear. Specifically, shoes that
support your foot appropriately, have a firm sole, and have&nbsp;good traction.
Traction is especially important during the winter months as&nbsp;you never&nbsp;know
when you will encounter ice, snow, or slush.&nbsp;Investing in&nbsp;a safe pair
of shoes can save you thousands of dollars in medical&nbsp;expenses that&nbsp;may
result from a fall.

Having your
vision regularly assessed is a crucial component of fall prevention.
Age-related eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts, can affect your
ability to see clearly. Having an untreated condition can affect your ability
to walk safely, especially on slippery surfaces. Eye diseases are not the only
culprit, though. Of course, you always want to make sure that you are seeing as
clearly as possible. Make sure you go to the eye doctor at least once per year.

Have you ever
read the warning labels on your medicine bottle? Perhaps you should! One common
side effect of medication is dizziness or lightheadedness. These side effects
can also increase your risk of experiencing a fall. If you experience any of
these symptoms, talk to your doctor. There may be an alternative medication.

Inner ear
disorders, low blood pressure, and arthritis can make you susceptible to falls.
Regular check-ups – at least once every 12 months – is an important part of
fall prevention. Talk to your doctor about what might increase your risk of
falls, and discuss ways to address those issues.

Research shows
that older adults who regularly exercise are less likely to experience a fall. Walk
around the block, practice Tai Chi or yoga, or lift weights. Any amount of
exercise is beneficial for overall health.

Be aware of
your risk of falling this winter, and acknowledge the changes you can make to
reduce your risk all year round.

WINKEL: Fall prevention during winter months

Holiday parties and big family meals may tempt us away from our healthy eating habits. Allow yourself to have your favorite foods but stick to smaller servings and balance them with healthier options.

Do you have several parties to attend? Plan ahead to help reduce those extra calories. Eat a small meal for breakfast with whole grains, fruit and protein. Don’t starve yourself thinking you’ll save room for party food. Take small bites and savor the delicious party foods. Go through the buffet once to reduce nibbling.

Staying active can help you keep a healthy weight during the holiday season. Look for opportunities to work physical activities into your holiday: Go for a stroll after a family meal, take a walk at the mall, or dance to your favorite holiday music. Aim to get at least 150 minutes a week of physical activity. For example, that could be at least 20 minutes a day or 30 minutes five days a week. It’s important to move more and sit less. Take simple steps to protect your family’s health when you prepare and serve holiday meals such as:

· Wash your hands and work surfaces before, during, and after preparing food, and before eating.

· Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separated during preparation.

· Cook food at the right internal temperature to kill harmful germs. Use a food thermometer to check.

· Refrigerate perishable foods, including leftovers, within two hours of buying or cooking.

KOERNER: Healthy eating includes holiday meals

When this outdoor column was born some twenty years ago, I swore it would always and only be about the outdoors; on rare occasions an outdoor topic or adventure from another state, but the outdoors non-the-less. My wife has often suggested I venture into other genres, but I have resisted. But now I find myself feeling the need to say some things that will deviate from the outdoors, and hoping that after almost twenty years, you readers will allow me this detour.

First and foremost, as a country and as a people we need God back in our lives. We have succeeded in pushing God out of our homes, our schools, our government and I fear He is barely welcome in some churches anymore. Now, don’t read into this more than I intend. I’m not blaming all the division and complete lack of common sense seen in our country today on God, suggesting He brought it on us or is allowing it to happen, although I believe that is a distinct possibility. What I am suggesting is that the only way for us as a nation to conquer all this turmoil is through a personal relationship with Jesus and by allowing God to be the God of the USA again. And by the way, without God there would be NO Kansas Outdoors to write about.

Secondly, we as a nation must regain a respect for authority. I see a tremendous lack of respect in our country for authority figures, parents, school teachers, coaches, work supervisors, law enforcement officers and even government officials and our president. Now I can hear the argument already “if those in authority respect me, I’ll respect them.” No, that’s not how this works. You can use that excuse with your siblings, your coworkers and maybe your friends, but not with those in authority over you. Yes, it’s wonderful to have authority figures who are kind, respectable themselves and also give us respect, but those in authority over us are due our respect even if it’s only for the position. Being a person of authority is not a popularity contest, nor are they there to be our best friend.

Thirdly, we as a people need to begin making decisions and forming opinions based on common sense, facts, science and the Bible. Today in our world, far too many decisions are made and opinions formed based on emotions alone. For example, I never dreamed I would see in my lifetime, not only support but actual promotion of the thinking that genders can be changed. Yes, there is a place for

emotions in the process of forming opinions, but factual information needs to be the driving force. Today’s media plays on our emotions and makes it terribly hard to stick to the facts. I can hardly stand to watch the commercials showing dogs that are skin and bones anchored to a tree with a log chain in a snowstorm. But the fact is that it’s EXTREMELY rare to find dogs like that; the vast majority of dogs in our nation are treated as well or better than some humans. But those pictures make the viewer tear-up and reach for their wallet to contribute to their cause. These tactics are used by organizations in all walks of life to get us to throw facts to the wind and go full-tilt ahead based on our emotions alone.

I don’t mean to make this all sound oversimplistic, and while changing the latter two would have a profound effect on the attitudes, demeaners and common-sense mindsets of us as United States citizens, it would probably do little to cease the wildfires or calm the hurricanes. But renewing or establishing a personal relationship with Jesus and making God the God of the USA again, will humble us before Him and invite Him to heal our land. Exploring Kansas Outdoors: In my humble opinion

Throughout 2024 parts of Kansas have been in abnormally dry or drought conditions. Some places, like those that use Cheney Reservoir west of Wichita as a water source, have even had water conservation restrictions in place for several months.

Changes in rainfall have been commonplace for the past few years. This rainfall is distributed unevenly across the state. Some places are going from very dry to getting the expected monthly rain total in a single day. These changes don’t necessarily show up in long-term averages but have a significant effect on agricultural production and infrastructure-disruptive flooding.

The historic trend of widespread droughts can also lead to increased food prices and according to research from Harvard University, such droughts are likely to continue into the future.

These trends prompted the Docking Institute at Fort Hays State University to add water conservation questions to their annual Kansas Speaks public opinion survey this year.

The survey asked respondents whether local and state governments across the state were addressing water conservation efforts satisfactorily.

33.4% of respondents felt that their local government was not doing enough for water conservation in their part of Kansas. Nearly 40% felt it was doing the right amount, and only 2.4% felt it was doing too much.

Nearly 37% of respondents felt the state government was not doing enough, nearly 34% felt it was doing the right amount, and only 3.2% said it was doing too much.

Respondents were nearly evenly split on whether or not voluntary action by individuals and businesses (33.6%) is sufficient for improving water conservation efforts across the state or whether local governments should pass new laws (35.7%). Similar results appeared for voluntary action by individuals and businesses (33.5%) versus new laws from the state government (34.1%).

About 30% of respondents had no opinion for both questions.

Nearly a majority (49.6%) of Kansans report being very or moderately concerned that the state might be running out of water. An additional 27.7% report being slightly concerned.

Kansas lawmakers face a pivotal choice about the future of water conservation in the state.

The data from the Kansas Speaks survey reflects a growing public awareness of the challenges posed by shifting rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and unequal water availability. With nearly half of Kansans expressing significant concern about the state’s water resources, it’s clear that inaction is not an option.

The question now is whether state and local leaders will take proactive steps to address these concerns through targeted policies and investments or leave the responsibility to voluntary efforts by individuals and businesses.

As extreme weather events and historic drought trends continue to strain Kansas's water systems, the decisions made today will determine whether the state can secure its water future and support its agricultural backbone for generations to come.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Public opinion signals urgency for Kansas water conservation

This is a reminder that pesticide containers are not to be repurposed after the pesticide has been used. Labels on non-refillable containers state, “Do not reuse or refill this container.” Some containers are refillable, and those labels typically say, “Refill this container with pesticide only. Do not reuse this container for any other purpose.” In some cases, the label may say, “Refill this container with [common chemical name]” or “This is a sealed, refillable container to be used only for [common chemical name],” which indicates that it can be refilled with the same pesticide by a retailer. These labeling statements make every pesticide container, from a 2.5-gallon jug up to a 30-gallon tote, illegal to reuse. Reusing containers for any other purpose is considered pesticide misuse and a violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. A pesticide container, even if it is empty or the label is removed (defaced), remains part of the pesticide product.

After use, pesticide containers should be disposed of properly. Disposal options may be limited by local regulations and ordinances. Containers that have been triple rinsed and crushed and/or punctured may be accepted by sanitary landfills or landfills that accept industrial waste. Check with your landfill operator prior to taking empty containers for disposal. Triple-rinsed containers can also be returned to the supplier. In addition, some counties in Kansas have a plastic pesticide container recycling program. Check with your county’s Environmental Office or Household Hazardous Waste program for more information.

CAMPBELL: Pesticide container misuse, be aware of the regulations

Recently Hays Medical Center has been in the news and has been prominent in social media. 

While there have been many changes and some big losses from our team of physicians and other health-care providers, there has been, and will be, consistent General Surgical Care at Hays Medical Center from the surgeons and staff who remain at Southwind Surgical.

We enjoyed working with Dr. Grove and appreciated his efforts during his time with Southwind Surgical in helping us to care for our patients in Hays and the surrounding communities. That said, we intend to continue to provide the best General Surgical Care possible for Hays and the surrounding communities just as members of our group have been doing for nearly 35 years.

Dr. Charles Schultz worked at both Hadley Regional Medical Center and St. Anthony’s Hospital prior to the merger of the two hospitals. LETTER: General surgical care continues with Southwind Surgical at HaysMed

Leaves fall from branches this time of year, and so do nuts. Around here those include black walnuts, acorns, and pecans. This abundance fills winter larders of squirrels and makes messes that function as obstacle courses resulting in turned ankles. Based on a friend’s story, it also leads to squirrels playing Rambo and throwing nut bombs at humans cleaning up yards.

From past experience, I know squirrels have precise aim when they target dogs. When we lived in the country, resident tree rats filled their cheeks with our golden retriever’s kibble and sat on our back porch roof, lying in wait for him to come in for a drink or snack. As he’d refresh himself, they’d start a chirring verbal attack and then launch dog food missiles that beaned him until he ran yiping out of range. As much as we felt bad for the dog, we chuckled at these orchestrated assaults. Who knew squirrels studied artillery tactics and used them effectively? Forget robots overtaking the world. With enough nuts or dog kibble, squirrels will beat them to it.

A friend told recently shared a similar tale, only she was the squirrels’ target. A tidy housekeeper, she doesn’t like to leave whole walnuts or cracked hulls littering her porch and yard. During this time of year, she regularly cleans up the fallout from her trees, sometimes several times a day. She’s joked in the past about how her resident squirrels chirr and chatter when she works outside through spring and summer. Once fall comes, forget the verbal war--they arm themselves and move from defense to offense.

She explained how she went out to clear her porch, and deceptively cute rodents immediately threatened her. Ignoring their tirade, she proceeded to clean up both naturally fallen nuts as well as broken hulls left behind after those scolding squirrels scored tasty nut meats.

In no time, the attack involved more than scolding. As the squirrels in our yard did to our dog, sticks, leaves, and nuts pelted her. Imagine her surprise to look into now leafless branches to spy furry warriors orchestrating their assault. High ground provided an advantage, and I’d guess their aim was better than hers as well. That would be true if I were the target.

As our friend indignantly told her story, those of us sipping coffee nearly snorted it through our noses. Prior to her account, we’d discussed degrees of squirrel cuteness. I’d even planned to find a source where I could collect walnuts in order to lure a new couple into our yard to replace our lone resident squirrel that fried itself in a transformer incident last year.

At this point, our oak trees are too young to produce a winter’s supple of acorns so I rely on folks willing to part with some of theirs. After contemplating her story, I’m reconsidering. Maybe I need to content myself with local birds and bunny for my wildlife fix. I’m certain my chickens don’t want to become targets any more than I do.

I know that&nbsp;for sure, as he is&nbsp;now&nbsp;one of two oncologists left&nbsp;here at&nbsp;HaysMed&nbsp;though the&nbsp;department&nbsp;had been hoping for a fourth oncologist just&nbsp;last year.

Dr. Grove did my colonoscopies. Great bedside manner. Great sense of humor. Experienced, empathetic&nbsp;and extremely knowledgeable.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I’ve heard it said everyone is replaceable. I suppose that is an accurate statement. It doesn’t&nbsp;say, however, that the replacement will be better&nbsp;or that the replacement will come soon.&nbsp;What cannot be replaced—ever—is&nbsp;the doctor/patient relationship established over time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Why have 21&nbsp;health care providers&nbsp;abandoned&nbsp;HaysMed&nbsp;since Jan. 1, 2024?&nbsp;What has made it such a difficult place to help people that physicians have uprooted families and moved away?&nbsp;Who is not listening to those who&nbsp;actually work with patients?&nbsp;&nbsp;

If&nbsp;HaysMed&nbsp;is to be part of Hays’ future, the bleeding has to stop.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Thanksgiving is around the corner and you’ve likely experienced a range of emotions planning for the holiday. Maybe you’re excited to see family, relieved to have a day off work, or maybe you’re stressed about how much food you’ve got to prepare. Despite the good or bad feelings related to Turkey Day, have you pondered the original name of the holiday itself, “Thanksgiving?”

Thanksgiving is rooted in the tradition of autumn harvest festivals. It has been celebrated for centuries, and George Washington made it an official holiday. He proclaimed that the people of the United States observe "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer."

As you prepare for the big day, I challenge you to remember the origin of the holiday: gratitude. Gratitude is the readiness to show appreciation and to return kindness. Research has found that people who consciously count their blessings tend to be happier and less depressed. In fact, a study showed that people who wrote one letter of thanksgiving for three weeks reported better mental health up to three months after the exercise ended. When people focus on the good in their lives, they tend to ruminate less on their negative experiences. Gratitude not only reduces the risk of depression, but it lowers stress which is a top cause of chronic illnesses including high blood pressure and heart disease.

As you can see, gratitude improves both mental and physical condition. If you’re interested in practicing gratitude for Thanksgiving and beyond, here are a few ways to make it routine:

· Recall three good things that happen to you each day. This may be a fun habit for you and your kids as you tuck them in at night!

· Keep a gratitude journal. Jotting down things you are grateful for is likely to change your perspective. You might see more positivity in the world around you. Looking through the pages of blessings in your life after a tough day may also be especially handy.

· Use your phone for good. We all find ourselves tied to our smart devices, so make it a priority to send a few “thank you” texts per week.

· Be self-aware of complaining. It’s easy to get drawn into a cycle of negativity when things aren’t going your way. To combat this habit, every time you complain, try to find the silver lining. When you can find the good in every situation, there is less room to fixate on the negatives of life.

Regardless of how you decide to practice gratitude, I encourage you to try it. Joshua Brown, a doctor of psychological science said it best, “Much of our time and energy is spent pursuing things we currently don’t have. Gratitude reverses our priorities to help us appreciate the people and things we do.”

In March of 2020, I was diagnosed with level 3 colon cancer.

Dr. Grove was persistent and so was able to schedule my surgery just before the operating room was closed due to the pandemic. Dr. Grove was able to perform the surgery without having to do a colostomy.

After my successful surgery, I have been under the care of Dr. Rodriguez and Dr. Grove. After four and a half years, I am still cancer-free.

Because of Dr. Grove and Dr. Rodriguez, I am 88 years old, alive and well.

These two physicians are the most knowledgeable, caring and giving individuals I have ever known. Dr. Grove and Dr. Rodriguez are exactly what our rural Kansas health care services need.

I was very saddened and upset to hear they are leaving HaysMed.

According to Dr. Grove and Dr. Rodriguez, the reason they are leaving is under the present leadership they are not able to provide the health care that the rural residents of Kansas need and deserve.

I was told to open Hays Post to see yet another doctor leaving Hays Medical Center—Dr. Robert Rodriguez.&nbsp; Not just a doctor but an oncologist who specializes in shedding some light on those who face the dirty “c” word.

The ones who beg for mercy and hope when they have nowhere else to turn.&nbsp; I know because I was one of those people.&nbsp; I don’t know how else to express my gratitude to Dr. Rodriguez other than thank you for being on my team. 

The Grove-Rodriguez team was the most down-to-earth, no-BS doctors that I could have hoped for.&nbsp; The surgeon and the oncologist went hand-in-hand, and they were the best. 

Some patients ask their doctor, “Is this the treatment you would want if you were in my shoes?” My friend, Robert, always would say, “If you were my mother, my wife, my daughter…I would proceed this way." I believed him. 

The 23 times I sat in that God-awful, most uncomfortable damn chair, I knew he always had my back. He was in my corner, lacing up my gloves.&nbsp; Thank you, Dr. Robert Rodriguez, for taking care of me! I have known you for six of the nine years you have been here, and I am better for it.

I would like to ask the good people of the community how do we fix this problem. We let someone come in who claims that they have the skills to run a hospital but do not listen to those who are really running the hospital (doctors, nurses, technicians, and many more).

&nbsp; We have lost 20 health care providers in the last year. How many more can we afford to lose? Not to mention, those who leave are banned from serving us through a nearby community. Non-compete clause? Is that a word that should even be used in health care?

This is not a retail business where goods are being sold.&nbsp; Lives are on the line!&nbsp; Shouldn’t we have more say in the health care of our community?&nbsp; We have public city, county and school board meetings—why not for health care (the reason we exist)?

Instead, there is a secret floor that none of the public knows about where the meetings are held in quiet. If this issue were only one or two disgruntled doctors leaving, I could understand that; however, this has been a small exodus of very important and qualified professionals in our community.

Bob Page, president and chief executive officer of the University of Kansas Health System, is the one who hired Eddie Herrman in September 2017. Since KU is no longer part of HaysMed, who does Eddie Herrman answer to now? The board? His buddies? I would very much like to know the answer to that question, as I am sure the citizens of Hays and surrounding communities would also.

I pray that those responsible for dismantling the infrastructure of our health care system are never diagnosed with a catastrophic disease where one day you need these people that you have chased away to save your life or someone in your family!&nbsp;

As I ran to the grocery store on Friday to pick up a few remaining items, I thought about my grocery list for the week.

While it certainly included things like green beans, chicken broth, and extra paper plates, I considered the other list that I needed to focus on to prepare.

A list that includes Thankfulness in many forms. Thankfulness for our family’s health; thankfulness for our kids being able to travel to spend a few days with us; thankfulness for family and friends far and wide who will share greetings whether in person or via text, social media, or even a phone call!A list that also includes thankfulness for communities that care and support small businesses, families in need, and organizations that help at so many levels. That list also includes thankfulness for leaders across our county and the Cottonwood Extension District who have a vision and want to improve the quality of life and livelihood of citizens.

My Thankfulness list also includes my 4-H families, volunteers, and community partners. Helping youth have and improve skills in communication, teamwork, and career readiness is important to me and to the long-term health and success of our communities!

My Gram lived by the adage that there was always room at her table for one more. She didn’t grow up with much and certainly made do her whole life but that never stopped her from being thankful and sharing what she had with family, friends, and neighbors. I do my best to carry on that ideal at our football tailgate, in my kitchen, and at many other meals. I hope that I also carry that ideal into a seat at a discussion table, involvement in an activity, and in caring for others in my community.

What is on your list of Thankfulness this year? A beautiful sunset? A new library book? A co-worker who makes you laugh just when you need it most? A friend who checks in “just because”? Whatever it is, I wish you a blessed day of thankfulness.

BERAN: Thankfulness

With trapping season and many Kansas hunting seasons already in full-swing, and with deer rifle season waiting in the wings, an important subject becomes gaining landowner permission wherever you hunt or trap. One particular landowner who allowed me to trap for several years always asked me where on his land I would be trapping, and my answer was always “Wherever your crops and cattle will allow it; I will always work around you.” Very few farmers deny trapping on their land unless they do hunt or trap themselves, or unless they’ve had a bad experience with another trapper, but it is their land and they do have the right to control access to it. The point I want this column to drive home is how important it is to us hunters and trappers and to the future of our sports to create and to maintain a good relationship with the farmers and ranchers on whose land we hunt and trap. Here are a few suggestions that will help create and maintain good relationships with the farmers and ranchers who own the land where you hunt and trap.

Landowners should be contacted each year no matter how long you have been granted access to their land. Stop and see them in person when possible. There are landowners that are just fine with a phone call and you will learn who they are with time, but if in doubt, see them in person. I traded pickups a couple years ago, so I have tried to stop and see all landowners just to show them what truck I would now be driving.

Pay special attention to any specific requests by the landowner. I accidentally left an electric fence hotwire unhooked one time and a few of the owners cows got out. He was none-too-happy, but we are friends and I apologized profusely and all was well. Make certain to close all gates, stay off the property if it’s wet enough to make ruts where you drive, and always leave the property as you found it.

Offering to help a landowner with a project like building fence or clearing trees goes a long way toward assuring permission to hunt or trap his land. You can also give them a pheasant or some fresh venison now and then. Some hunters even send thank you cards to landowners each year. I recently read how one

professional trapper out west once stopped to help a farmer get freshly baled hay into the barn just before a rain and because of his kindness was eventually granted sole permission to trap on over 15,000 acres of New Mexico land owned by the farmer’s cousin.

God is not making any more land these days, and good recreational land is often leased or purchased by wealthy groups or individuals for their own use. That leaves most of us outdoorsmen dependant on gaining permission to hunt and trap on privately owned land. Exploring Kansas Outdoors: Getting permission should be your mission

With the election of three new members this year, the Kansas State Board of Education is expected to shift more conservative on issues like the recognition of Trans students, books in the school library, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.&nbsp; Yet for all the publicity these issues receive, they do not really capture what the Kansas School Board does most of the time.

There seems to be a bipartisan near-consensus behind the “career readiness” focus in schools.&nbsp; Such a focus undoubtedly has its advantages, but today it has become single-minded.&nbsp; Career readiness is crowding out vital civic education and extracurricular activities, to the detriment of students.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It started out well.&nbsp; Curricula like the Olathe School District’s 21st Century programs have been designed to keep students focused, connecting their coursework to intended careers.&nbsp; These programs offer internships and other opportunities so students can make connections and experience a typical workday in their intended field.&nbsp; Such programs can be useful, keeping students motivated and equipping them with valuable skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Unfortunately, today, things are running off the rails.&nbsp; Consider college preparation.&nbsp; Not all students wish to attend college, and they should not be pressured to do so.&nbsp; Yet many do set their sights on college, and today’s high school environment bombards them with opportunities–and expectations–to take college courses while still in high school.&nbsp; These include Advanced Placement (AP) courses, in which students prepare for standardized tests, and dual enrollment courses, in which the high school teacher is also an adjunct faculty member at a local community college or university. Another option is Early College Admission (ECA), in which students are bussed from high school to an area college or university.&nbsp; Cramming in as many of these early college courses as possible displaces vital high school experiences like civic education and extracurricular activities.&nbsp; With students’ anxiety already running sky-high, adding this additional pressure only makes things worse, throwing the students’ lives out of balance and crowding out opportunities to do things they enjoy, like sports, debate, and drama.&nbsp; It also limits their opportunities to make friends face to face, so they turn to social media instead.&nbsp; Meanwhile, history and government classes keep getting cut while our civic culture lies in tatters. Today, many high school graduates struggle to distinguish between reliable sources of information and baseless conspiracy theories.&nbsp; Is it worth it?

Consider a future teacher who completes two full years of college courses while still in high school.&nbsp; They sail through college in only two years and hit the job market…&nbsp; at 20 years old.&nbsp; Can any Kansan seriously say that a 20 year old teacher who cannot even legally buy alcohol is emotionally ready to teach high school students only two or three years younger?&nbsp; Such nonsense is exactly what the Kansas School Board has been encouraging lately.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Remember, college-bound students can always take their university credits when they get to college.&nbsp; The best thing high school can do is send them there well-prepared and genuinely excited about the college experience. Students choosing non-college career paths also deserve this preparation, since they, too, will need additional training or schooling beyond high school.

In the latest&nbsp;Kansas Speaks&nbsp;poll, 47.8% of respondents agreed that the primary purpose of higher education is to produce an educated citizenry, versus only 32.9% who believed that the primary goal was workforce readiness, with others remaining neutral or undecided.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansans get it. &nbsp; The question is, will the new Kansas School Board listen?

This innovative program, launched in September by the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission(KGSC) in collaboration with K-State Research and Extension and the K-State Department of Plant Pathology, announces a comprehensive winter educational program.

Building on the success of its inaugural field day series, which focused on stalk rot prevention and producer profitability, the Sorghum Connection team offers an additional series of one-day events across central and western Kansas, which will delve deeper into key topics gained from the field days. These events will be held in Salina (December 4th), Hays (December 5th), and Garden City (December 6th). CAMPBELL: Sorghum connection series extends support to Kansas growers with winter series

To my fellow residents of western Kansas,

I tendered my resignation from HaysMed on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024. My last day in the clinic will be Feb. 17, 2025.

It has been a wonderful journey for my family and me since I began my practice at HMC in July 2015. Currently, I am one of only two remaining medical oncologists who physically reside west of Hays. For that reason, I struggled deeply with my decision to leave. It is never easy to make such a decision, especially when reflecting on all the patients I have had the privilege of helping over the past nine years. My greatest concern is how the people of Western Kansas will access medical oncology services in the future.

Ultimately, my decision to leave was guided by how I believe medical care can best be delivered to the people of rural Kansas. The simple truth is that the administration at HaysMed and I have differing views on the need for a new model of health care. In my opinion, the current regional hub health care model that HaysMed operates under is unlikely to remain viable in the long term. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that the departure of approximately 20 health care providers from the hospital in the past year also influenced my decision.

I do not know what the future holds for medical oncology in Western Kansas, especially as HMC has made it clear that it will enforce its restrictive employment covenants regardless of the impact. The national shortage of oncologists, particularly in rural America, only amplifies this challenge. However, I am confident that there will always be an increasing need for the services I provide across the United States.

I bear no ill will toward the administration at HaysMed. For the sake of the health of our community and rural Kansas as a whole, I sincerely hope they succeed in the extraordinarily difficult task of recruiting new physicians to our wonderful community.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank all my patients and the people of Western Kansas who have supported my family and me. Thank you all.

LETTER: Oncologist announces resignation from HaysMed

Fort Hays State University (FHSU) celebrates International Education Week (IEW) each November. This annual celebration highlights global diversity, advances cross-cultural understanding, gives voice to the perspectives of our international students, and enhances the educational experience for the entire campus community.

International Education Week is more than festive gatherings; it celebrates humanity. Students from around the globe come together to share their customs, languages, and traditions. This fall, our on-campus international student enrollment includes 200 students from 45 different countries. As part of this intentional community, all students are encouraged to explore and appreciate the cultural mosaic that enriches their lives and learning experiences.

Amadou Diawara, a first-year MBA student from Dakar, Senegal, is a prime example of the transformative journey fostered by FHSU. “I initially joined FHSU as part of the first cohort from Dunis Dakar, a partner university in Senegal,” Amadou shares. “The welcoming environment and strong academic support drew me in, and the opportunity to study locally and abroad is invaluable.”

Nurturing cross-cultural ties opens doors to understanding and collaboration on a global scale, Amadou’s aspirations extend beyond his time at FHSU; he hopes to return to Senegal after gaining U.S. work experience and apply his newly acquired skills to develop startups that can positively impact his community.

Lucas Billinger’s path to FHSU is equally inspiring. Hailing from Linz, Austria, Lucas is in his third year at the university, pursuing a degree in finance and an education that once seemed far from his reach. “If you had asked the 16-year-old me if I wanted to study in another country, I would have said no,” he reveals. “But after my military service, I was uncertain about my next steps.”

Encouraged by his father’s colleague’s son’s experiences, he considered studying in the United States. “After some reflection, I realized that if I didn’t take this chance now, I might never get another opportunity.”

After extensive research, FHSU emerged as the perfect fit. “It checked every box on my checklist,” he recalls, highlighting the university’s welcoming atmosphere and vital support services. “And when I saw how affordable it was compared to other U.S. schools, my decision was solidified. As an international student, that was incredibly important.”

Lucas’s journey at FHSU has profoundly changed his outlook—one that he publicly credits to his supportive parents and the International Office, who have guided him through this transitional period. “The support I’ve received has been exceptional. I truly appreciate everything they’ve done to help me navigate this journey,” he says.

Students like Lucas thrive in campus activities, from joining friends at soccer games to immersing themselves in the cultural diversity fostered by events during IEW. “My experience here has been amazing,” he declares with enthusiasm. “GO TIGERS!”

International students also contribute economically to FHSU and the surrounding community—paying tuition, participating in local businesses, enriching the local culture—and fostering an atmosphere of cross-cultural exchange essential in today’s globalized world.

Through interactions with their peers, they gain invaluable interpersonal skills that employers seek in future leaders. The diverse perspectives brought to classroom discussions stimulate creativity and encourage critical thinking. Amy Liu, a master’s student from China, elaborates on this point: “Cross-cultural experiences challenge us to think critically, and they inspire innovative approaches to problem-solving,” she says.

The robust partnerships FHSU has built over decades reinforce its commitment to global education, fostering collaboration that enhances its international profile. These efforts lead to unique study-abroad opportunities and cooperative research initiatives that further enrich the educational landscape for all students.

For Amy Liu, the memories created during IEW remain profoundly uplifting. “The celebration made me feel connected to my roots while surrounded by friends from various backgrounds,” she shares. “It reminds me of the joy of sharing my culture and learning from others.”

The vast array of events planned during IEW emphasizes the importance of global citizenship and its impact on each individual’s worldview. By engaging with diverse cultures, students deepen their understanding of international issues and develop empathy—qualities crucial to fostering cooperation in today’s complex global landscape.

What I appreciate most about IEW is the connections that bring students closer together, reinforcing the idea that while their journeys may have originated in different corners of the globe, they are united by a shared purpose: to learn, to grow, and ultimately, to make a difference in the world. With a spirit of cooperation and cultural sharing, IEW provides a space where every student can find their place, fostering a community that supports growth, empathy, and understanding—one story at a time.

Heart of a Tiger: Celebrating International Education Week

As a kiddo, I couldn’t wait for Thanksgiving. I loved making Pilgrim hats and handprint turkeys at school. As a youngster and adult, I treasured celebrating at Grandma Lottie’s where she served family roasted turkey on a platter surrounded by dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, hot rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy, along with the promise we needed to leave room for fresh-made pumpkin pies and homemade whipped cream for dessert.

Not only was the meal delicious, she decorated the dining and living rooms to whimsically celebrate the season. Autumn flowers surrounded pilgrim and turkey figurines in every available space. Little ones couldn’t resist moving those characters from place to place while providing clever kid dialogue. My mother accepted her Mom’s challenge and found a huge terra cotta turkey accompanied by porcelain pilgrims and turkey salt and pepper shakers to grace her Thanksgiving table post Grandma Lottie.

Gramma and Mom must’ve passed on the festive gene as well as some décor, though it took a while to manifest. After decades of no Thanksgiving doo-dads, we now hang an autumn wreath on the door, set out a snipped-tin turkey in a bower of silk leaves, and display clever little bird pilgrims and smaller turkeys with dangling shoelace legs. This generation of grandkids continue the tradition of transferring them from one open spot to another in dining and living rooms. Lately, those turkeys have prompted some soul or perhaps dietary searching.

Here's the dilemma. While turkey is clearly traditional Thanksgiving food and one that Grandma and Mom always served, my hubs and I prefer ham at holiday meals. What does this mean in terms of décor? Do I jettison gobblers in search of handcrafted oinkers to replace expected turkey figurines in holiday displays?

Our community boasts a craft business that offers the public opportunities to dip a brush and paint plaster molds, including porkers. I can see accenting them to suit autumn. Like those cool horses decorated with different designs that you find in specialty catalogues, I could paint sunflowers all over one of those little hams and then embellish another with fall leaves and one with Pilgrim hats and blunderbusses. If I got really creative, I could cover one of those forms with dozens of strutting turkeys celebrating the fact they aren’t on the menu. Only moderately interested in gramma’s holiday foo foo rah, the grands might get into painting piggies to replace those goofy fan-tailed strutters and start a whole new family custom.

While we might replace a traditional turkey meal with ham, it’s hard to ignore a life-time of celebrating my favorite holiday (no costumes, no gifts, great food, and good fellowship) without the standard turkey showing up in some form. Based on research, natives and pilgrims at those early feasts ate more fish, sea food, venison, and other wild game than they did turkey. But, family tradition is important. It creates structure for celebrating and customs to pass through generations.

That said, since we have a ham in the freezer awaiting Thanksgiving, our collection of turkeys can offer thanks they’ll continuing starring in our traditional décor.
