Phyllis Jean Sheldon, 75, passed away on September 3, 2020, at the 
Cedar Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on 
December 7, 1944, in Dighton, Kansas, to Harold and Jennie (Stiawalt) 
Riepe.

Phyllis attend cosmetology school in Hutchinson after graduating from
 Ness City High School in 1962.&nbsp; She worked as a hair stylist in Ransom 
and Ness City for 40 years.&nbsp; She was a member of the United Methodist 
Church and the Frank Stull Post #152 American Legion Auxiliary, both of 
Ness City.&nbsp; She married Jerry Leikam on January 18, 1964.&nbsp; Together they
 raised two daughters.&nbsp; She later married Max Sheldon on March 28th, 
1981, in Ransom, Kansas.

Survivors include husband, Max Sheldon of Ness City; stepson, Mike 
Sheldon and wife Leslie of Murray, Utah; daughter Jo Ann Hashenberger, 
husband Brian Hashenberger of Natoma, their three children Danny Ellis 
and wife Cambria (Eickhoff) of Natoma, Tera Hashenberger of Natoma, and 
Justin Hashenberger of Ness City, Kansas; daughter Dee Bauer, husband 
Brady Bauer of Ness City, their four children Josh Crombie and wife 
Lauren (Pfannenstiel) of Ness City, Brittany Bauer of Ness City, Dalton 
Bauer, and wife Madison (Wallgren), of Ness City, William Bauer of Ness 
City, and sister-in-law LaVone Hoss of Ness City. Phyllis was loved very
 much by her five great grandchildren.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; brother Cecil Richards; sister Donna Dee Riepe; and sister Darlene Butts.

Memorial service will be on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, 11:00 a.m.,
 at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City.&nbsp; Burial in the Ness City

Paulette M. Sander, age 84, of Hays, Kansas, former Victoria resident, died Saturday, August 29, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born April 29, 1936, at Victoria, Kansas to Dionysius F. “Dan” and Catherine (Bach) Dreiling.&nbsp; She married Norman L. Sander on November 12, 1956, at Victoria, Kansas.

She was the Office Manager/School Secretary at Victoria Grade School for number years and was bookkeeper at R &amp; S Oilfield Services for 13 years.&nbsp; She also worked at Woolworth’s in Hays and was a seamstress at Aaron’s Wear.&nbsp; She grew up in Victoria and was a 1955 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp; She lived in Hays and Gorham until they built the home at Victoria in 1965.&nbsp; In 2010, they sold their home and traveled in their motorhome until moving to Knoxville, Tennessee in 2014.&nbsp; They moved back to Kansas in 2018, and settled in Hays.&nbsp; Paulette enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, fishing, cooking and gardening. &nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Norman L. Sander Sr. of the home; one son, Norman Sander Jr, and wife, Sherry, Nashville, TN; one daughter, Debbie Leickteig and husband, Dan, Greeley, KS; three grandchildren, Trent Karlin, Clayton Murray, Aaron Sander; one great grandchild, Adison Karlin; four brothers, Dan Dreiling and wife, Elaine, Topeka, KS; Frank Dreiling and wife, Kathy, Kansas City, KS; Lloyd Dreiling and wife, Eileen, Kansas City, KS; Roy Dreiling and wife, Linda, Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Luella Bowman, Eldorado, KS; Cathy Roth and husband, Tom, Atlanta, GA.

W. Dennis Elder, 68, Bison, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Dennis was born September 4, 1951, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Leonard D. and N. JoAnne (Hall) Elder.&nbsp; He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. &nbsp; A 1969 graduate of Bison Rural High School, Bison, Kansas, he was a farmer.&nbsp;

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Church Choir, the Bison Community Museum, and a 43 year member of Rural Fire District 5, where he served as Fire Chief for many years, all of Bison, Kansas.&nbsp; Dennis served as the mayor of Bison for many years.&nbsp; He was also a 4-H leader for 30 years, a member of the Rush County Historical Society, Walnut City Masonic Lodge #215, MOPAC Historical Society, and the KOSMO (Kansas Organization for Space Modeling).

On August 12, 1972, he married Edith “Edie” Eitel at the United Methodist Church, Bison, Kansas. &nbsp;

Survivors include:&nbsp; his wife, Edith “Edie” Elder, Bison, Kansas; one son, William Elder (Sylvia), Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters, Joanna McAlister (Greg), St. John, Kansas, and Emily Little (Matt), De Soto, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Garrett McAlister, Lilly McAlister, Addison McAlister, Rosa Elder, Calixta Elder, Kadee Little, and Whitlee Little; his mother, N. JoAnne Elder, La Crosse, Kansas; and two sisters, Kathy Holopirek (Rick), Bison, Kansas, and Lori Collins (Charles), Omaha, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his father; and an infant sister, Karen Elder.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 8, 2020, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp;

W. Dennis Elder

Bernard Joseph Huelsmann, 92, of Angelus Kansas died peacefully 
Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term
 Care, Hoxie, Kansas. 

 He was born September 4, 1927, in Thomas County, 
Kansas to Henry and Mary Louise (Baalmann) Huelsmann. Bernie was a 
lifelong farmer with a love for the land surpassed only by the love for 
his family and his strong Catholic faith. 

At the age of 22, Bernie met a 
young woman at a skating rink in Oakley, Kansas and the following year 
on August 16, 1950 he married that young lady, Bonnie Fischer, at St. 
Joseph’s Church in Oakley, Kansas.  Six children were born to this 
union. Bernie and Bonnie were blessed to celebrate 70 years of marriage 
this past August. Bernie was an active member of St. Paul’s Catholic 
Church in Angelus, where he was a Eucharistic minister. He was a third 
degree member of the Knights of Columbus and received his 75 year pin in
 August. He served on the South Randel Township Board and participated 
in the American Agriculture Movement, traveling with the tractorcade to 
Washington D.C. in 1979. 

As a young man, he enjoyed playing baseball for 
the Angelus team. In his spare time in later years, he enjoyed traveling
 and fishing especially with his grandkids. Many Friday nights were 
spent in the bleachers cheering on his grandchildren in their various 
activities. Time spent with family was important too, with many games of
 pitch played by both Fischer and Huelsmann families. Bernie was deeply 
loved, greatly respected, and will be forever missed. 
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank and John 
and sisters; Luetta Robben, Floralee Rumback, Mildred Thummel and Lyola 
Moos. 
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bonnie; children ,Diane 
Solomon, Linda (Ron) Lager, Greg (Patty) Huelsman, Phyllis (Randy) 
Tholen, Peggy Huelsman (Kevin Zerr) and Carlene (Mitch) Gillespie; 
siblings Edwin (Irene) Huelsman, Donna Marie Smith, Donna Lee McGuire, 
Aloysius Huelsman and Charles Huelsmann; 18 grandchildren and 30 great 
grandchildren. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Monday, September 7, 2020, at St. Paul’s 
Catholic Church, Angelus; with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is 
10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2020 also at the church, with burial in

Betty J. Martell, 85, Hays, died Tuesday, September 1, 2020, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene.

She was born June 7, 1935, in La Crosse, 
Kansas, the daughter of Stephan and Anna (Kreutzer) Herrman.&nbsp; On January 
12, 1954, she was united in marriage to Kendall E. Martell in LaCrosse, 
and they were married 41 years before he preceded her in death on March 
8, 1995.&nbsp; Betty worked at Hadley Hospital as a Certified Nursing 
Assistant and was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.&nbsp;
 She was a volunteer with the Senior Companion program for many years, 
loved to read, and made cross-stitch quilts for each of her children and
 grandchildren. &nbsp;

Survivors include a son; Brad Martell 
and wife Lillian of Bettendorf, IA, a daughter; Debbie Bielefeld and 
husband Gene of Abilene, a brother; Stephen Herrman and wife Caroleen of

Betty J. Martell

Pamala Sue “Pam” Erickson, age 60, of Russell, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born October 12, 1959, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Ronald E. “Ron” and Alfreda J. “Freda” (Foos) Broetzmann.&nbsp; She married Ronald Blau and they later separated she then married Ken Erickson on November 12, 2016 in Russell, Kansas.

She was the director of the Physicians Clinic at the Russell Regional Hospital before she retired.&nbsp; She was a past director of the First Call for Help in Hays.&nbsp; She was a licensed&nbsp;practical nurse and was a graduate of North Central Kansas Technical College.&nbsp; She also received a Bachelor’s Degree in human resource management and a Master’s Degree in&nbsp; adult educations.&nbsp; Pam grew up in Garden City and was a 1977 graduate of Goodland High School.&nbsp; She loved to be with her family, grandchildren and enjoyed her pets. &nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Ken Erickson, of the home; one son, Josh Blau, Overland Park, KS; one daughter, Chelsee Hoffman and husband, Daniel, Russell, KS; two stepsons, Jason Erickson, Liberty Lake, WA; Jordan Erickson and wife, Michelle, Los Balnon, CA; one sister, Lori Hertel and husband, Stan, Hays, KS; mother-in-law, Margaret Stedman, Oberlin, KS; two grandchildren, Bailee and Landry Hoffman; and one step-grandchild, Elias Erickson. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ronald Craig Broetzman; one nephew, Steven Lee Hertel; one niece, Ana Hertel and father-in-law, Phil Erickson.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 5, 2020, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.&nbsp; Burial in Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the mortuary. &nbsp; &nbsp; The family suggests memorials to Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

Pamala Sue 'Pam' Erickson

With profound sadness, we celebrate the life lived by LaVonne, our 
loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all whose lives she 
touched.&nbsp; She left us on September 1, 2020 with family members at her 
side at Topside Manor.&nbsp; She was in her 80th year.

LaVonne was born in Ft. Morgan, CO on July 28, 1940 to parents, David
 and Pauline Sagel.&nbsp; She was the baby of the family with 3 older sisters
 and a brother.&nbsp; She was educated in Ft. Morgan, CO through high school 
and attended Colorado State University for 2 years where she was a 
member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

She met the love of her life, Everett Lage, Brush, CO and they 
celebrated their marriage union on August 18, 1961.&nbsp; They began their 
married life farming in Morgan County, CO and welcomed their beloved 
children Shannon and Mark into their family. In 1966, they moved to 
Goodland, KS where she and Everett worked at the Great Western Sugar 
Company.&nbsp;&nbsp; In Goodland, LaVonne worked as a travel agent for Arrow 
Travel and as a grain accountant with Goodland Co-op and Mueller Grain.&nbsp;
 In Sharon Springs, LaVonne worked and retired from the Wallace County 
Co-op.&nbsp;

LaVonne was a wonderful wife, mother and Nana.&nbsp; She kept an 
immaculate house and had a gift for decorating and party planning.&nbsp; She 
also enjoyed spending time outdoors tending to her yard and flowers. She
 was a founding member of PEO Chapter ID and treasured time with her 
sisters.&nbsp; She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church; a social 
member of the Sugar Hills Country Club and involved with the Glendale 
Livewires 4-H Organization.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren, Shannon (Melvin) 
Nemechek of &nbsp;Goodland, KS; Mark (Christi) Lage of Overland Park, KS; 
&nbsp;Connor Simpson and Mya Nemechek of Goodland, KS and Sophie Lage of 
Overland Park, KS.&nbsp; She is also survived by her two sisters, Eloise 
(Conrad) Hanson of Goodland, KS and Virginia McCracken of Brush, CO.

LaVonne is preceded in death by her parents, David and Pauline Sagle;
 her husband, Everett Lage; her sister, Renee Young and brother, Leonard

LaVonne Pauline (Sagel) Lage

Hazel Alberta Edwards, 63, passed away September 2, 2020, at the 
University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. She was born on 
July 29, 1957, at Hill City to Cleophas &amp; Alberta (Bratton) Edwards.

Coming from Hill City in 1980, Hazel was a Great Bend resident. She 
was a department manager at Walmart for 34 years. She was one of Jehovah
 Witnesses and liked to travel for international bible conventions. She 
enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, and working on her house and in 
her yard. She especially loved being with her family.&nbsp;She enjoyed 
working on construction of Kingdom Halls and participating in the 
ministry work.

Survivors include, her sister, Sharlene Smith and her husband Lewis 
of Great Bend; one niece, Jaclyn Smith; four nephews, Steve Smith, 
Travis Smith, David Smith, and Kevin Smith; one great niece; and one 
great nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three 
brothers.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place and services will be announced at a later date.

Steven Earl Bechtold passed away on May 14, 2020, at the age of 67.
 Steven was born December 11, 1952, in Smith Center, KS to Francis and Mary Bechtold nee Doak.
 Steven is survived by his beloved wife Deborah Bechtold nee Shepherd
 of Lake Saint Louis, Missouri; two daughters, Polly Bechtold of St. 
Charles, MO, Tricia (Todd) Winters of Wentzville, MO; two 
granddaughters, Kyla (Michael Vanderbol) Garland, Tatym Winters; two 
grandsons, Taylor (Caroline Pugh) Bechtold, Tanner Winters; four 
cousins, Gary (Jerry) Bechtold of Las Vegas, NV, Jan (Alice) Bechtold of
 Laguna Beach, CA, Karen (Ray-deceased) Vaughn of Lenexa, KS, Gayle 
(Pam) Bechtold of Denver, CO.&nbsp;

 He is preceded in death by his father, 
Francis Bechtold, mother, Mary Doak. 

Steve and Deborah cherished 40 
years of marriage. 

 Steve proudly served his country in during the 
Vietnam war in the Navy. He was a dedicated worker. Steve loved his 
Kansas University Jayhawks basketball. He enjoyed snow skiing and 
relaxing on the beach. Steve cherished his family. 

He will be dearly 
missed by all who knew and loved him.

Steven Earl Bechtold

Erma Joyce Titus was born on March 3, 1931, in Rapid City, South 
Dakota, to parents Clifford Clinton Titus and Alice Elizabeth Verry.&nbsp; 
She departed this life September 1, 2020 in Sharon Springs, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Erma spent her early years in Clough South Dakota where her parents ran a
 general store.&nbsp; The Great Depression forced the closure of the store 
and the family lived in various locations, eventually settling in Sharon
 Springs, Kansas in 1940.&nbsp; Erma was the youngest of five siblings. &nbsp;

Erma graduated high school in May 1950 and married Lloyd E. Williams 
on June 13, 1950 in Raton, New Mexico.&nbsp; They spent their earlier years 
farming in Kansas and then moved to Isabel, South Dakota in the early 
1950s.&nbsp; In 1958, they moved back to Kansas with daughter Rita in tow, 
and a son, Leslie Dee, was born in 1960.&nbsp; They continued to farm and 
raise cattle throughout their married life.

Erma and Lloyd reached the great milestone of their 70th wedding anniversary June 13, 2020.&nbsp;

During the 1980s she worked as a nurses’ aid at the Prairie Manor in 
Sharon Springs, Kansas, enjoying friendships with residents and 
co-workers.

More recently, she was honored to be featured in a book authored by 
Kelsie Stelting,&nbsp; “Raising the West”, which told about the lives of 
local women who worked and raised their families in lean years in 
Wallace County.&nbsp;

She had a great knack for names and birthdays,&nbsp; keeping up with her 
extended family, including grandchildren Kendra Robben, Kayle Robben, 
Brynn Peter, Brodie Poe, and Brock Williams, and great grandchildren 
Ryker and Finley Lewis, Lucas Robben, Taelynn, Bristyn and Banks Peter, 
and Dally, Tye, Ketch and Keiper Poe. &nbsp;

Erma also leaves sister Alice Davis of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and nephews Don Davis, Dennis Davis, Clifford Cox and Allen Rexford.

Cheryl K. Wagner, 73, Ellis, died Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at HaysMed.

She was born April 2, 1947 in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of James M. and Catherine R. (Christopher) Bailey.

Cheryl graduated from Ellis High School
 in 1965, attended Kansas State University, and was a teletype operator 
for TWA in St. Louis. &nbsp;She was an excellent cook, loved being in the 
Colorado Rocky Mountains, and loved animals, especially her two cats and
 her dog.

Survivors include two daughters; 
Christy Owings-Pettit of Longmont, CO and Katie Wagner of Hays, two 
sisters; Karen Hendrickson and husband David of Hays and Cathy Bailey of
 Dallas, TX, six grandchildren; Taylor Owings of Boston, MA, Kiley 
Pettit, Austin Pettit, and Brandon Pettit, all of Longmont, CO, and 
Peyton Moore and Hunter Moore, both of WaKeeney, a great-granddaughter; 
Dahlia Hunter of Longmont, CO, and a niece and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister; Joyce Linna.

Cheryl K. Wagner

Van Gray, 76, passed away September 1, 2020, at Diversicare of 
Larned. He was born Oct. 17, 1944, in Bernice, LA to Bill &amp; Elvira 
(Levingston) Gray. Moving here when he was very young, the family 
resided in Hoisington, KS, where he attended school. In 1966, he married
 Bernice Robinson but they later divorced in 1995.

Van was a long time Great Bend resident, where he worked for 
Johnson’s Electric for many years until he retired. He loved to fish, 
hunt, and play baseball when he was younger.

Survivors include, a daughter, Shionta Gray of Great Bend, KS; a son,
 Kenneth Ray Gray; sisters, Wanda Oaks (Cleveland), and Audrey Mae 
Wright (Ray), and a brother, Billy Ray Gray (Sharon), all of Salina, KS;
 seven grandchildren, Ouray, D’Kenna, D’Kari, Keyon, Kingston, LaTaja,

and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 
Bill and Elvira Gray; a daughter, Kena Lachelle Gray; a sister, Eula Mae
 Robinson; and four brothers, Hilton Gray, Don Gray, J.C. Gray, and Roy 
Gray.

Larned. He was born Oct. 17, 1944, in Bernice, LA to Bill &amp; Elvira

 Bernice Robinson but they later divorced in 1995.Van was a long time Great Bend resident, where he worked for 
Johnson’s Electric for many years until he retired. He loved to fish,

Karen Sue “Kay” Neighbors, 78, passed away August 19, 2020, at 
Diversicare of Larned. She was born on May 21, 1942, at Great Bend, to 
Lloyd &amp; Bernadine (Goodman) Davis. She married Jack Lee Neighbors on
 June 2, 1970, at Oklahoma City, OK. He died July 27, 2006.

A lifetime Barton county resident and long-time farmer, Kay worked 
for Great Bend Manufacturing as a secretary and in accounts payable at 
Barton Community College. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in 
Larned. She enjoyed baking, flower and vegetable gardening and crafts of
 all kinds. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include, three sons, Brian Wilson and wife Dana of Enid, 
Okla., Kent Bowersox and wife Xan of Larned, and Arthur Dean Bowersox of
 Great Bend; two daughters, Laryssa Howard, and Jana Britt and husband 
Robert, all of Great Bend; a brother, Wayne Davis and wife Carolyn of 
Florida; sixteen grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Jack Lee Neighbors; and her parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial 
service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at 
Bryant Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery North.

Ina Mae Slough (Horton) died May 16th at Riderwood Village in Silver Spring, MD.

Born May 23, 1931 in Larned, Kansas, Ina was just a week shy of her 89th
 birthday.&nbsp; Ina is survived by her sister, Zelma Ann Hanna, and 
predeceased by her sister Mary Katherine Cunningham, brothers Stanley 
Dean Horton, and Allen Dwayne Horton, and her parents Thomas and Goldie 
Horton.

Ina married Sammy Slough on December 30th, 1953 in Larned,
 Kansas. From her marriage Ina had three children. Ina is survived by 
her daughter Debra Nusbaum and son Sammy Slough Jr, and predeceased by 
her son Gary Slough. Ina is also survived by five grandchildren and 
three great grandchildren.

Ina graduated from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Hutchinson, KS
 in 1953. She worked as a Registered Nurse throughout her years while 
living in Kansas, Delaware, Maryland, and California.

Ina loved to cook, embroider, and read. She was an active member of 
the Methodist Church everywhere that she lived, and worked as a 
volunteer at various hospitals.

Memorial Service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 19th
 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel and live streamed via Facebook Live, with 
Pastor Tricia North presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the Pleasant 
Valley Cemetery, Zook, KS.&nbsp;

Ina Mae Slough

Darrel E. Roadhouse, 78, of Osborne, KS passed away Sunday, August 
30, 2020&nbsp;at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, KS. &nbsp;On January 30, 
1942, Darrel was born to Wallace E. &amp; Lela M. (Hawkins) Roadhouse in
 Osborne, KS.

He graduated from the Portis High School in&nbsp;Portis, KS. &nbsp;He married Joleen Wolters and to this union 2 children were born. &nbsp;

Darrel has lived in Osborne, KS all his life and worked for&nbsp;Osborne 
County in the Highway Dept. for 45 yrs.&nbsp; He later became the supervisor 
of the Highway Dept.&nbsp;for 15 years before his retirement in 2004.&nbsp;

Darrel attended the Free Methodist Church in Osborne for many years.

Darrel is survived by his wife, Joleen; son: Mark (Karol) Roadhouse 
of Osborne; daughter: Kathy Pacello of Osborne; sisters: Joan (Kenneth) 
Beckwith of Mulvane, Ks.; Lois Mayers of Emporia, KS; 5 grandchildren; 
14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild.

Darrel E. Roadhouse

Cheri Rae Walter, 71, passed away August 31, 2020, at the University 
of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. She was born on November 8,
 1948, at Wichita to Joseph &amp; Helen (Helbert) Greenleaf. She married
 Doug Walter on June 25, 1981, at Great Bend. He survives.

Coming from Wichita in 1964, Cheri was a Great Bend resident. She 
retired from McPherson and McVey Law Office as a debt collector. She 
enjoyed cross stitching and stained glass work. She especially enjoyed 
spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include, her husband, Doug Walter of the home; three 
daughters, Tami Johns, and Melissa Crawford and husband James, all of 
Great Bend, and Pamela Cooper and husband Patrick of Wichita; and five 
beloved grandchildren, Gavin Crawford, Kamryn Johns, Khloe Johns, 
William Dixon, and Seth Choyce.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A 
Celebration of Life Service will be at the home of Doug and Cheri, at 
11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 5, 2020, 3315 18th St., Great
 Bend, Kan. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Golden

Vicki Ann Cooper

Beryl LaVerne Lemon was born June 14, 1923, to James and Mildred (Reed) Lemon on a farm 3 miles northeast of Kirwin, KS.&nbsp; When she was 3 years old she moved with her family to her grandparent’s farm 3 miles southeast of Kirwin where she grew up attending country grade school in Phillips County.

She attended High School in Kirwin graduating with the class of 1941.&nbsp; On May 20, 1943, she married her high school sweetheart Warren Plymesser while he was serving in the Army.&nbsp; She worked for the Phillips County Treasurer office for 2 years while Warren was deployed overseas.&nbsp;

&nbsp;On his return home in 1945, they made their home in Kirwin, KS where they were blessed with two daughters JoLynn Kuebler and Delene Solorio. At one point, she had her own Plymesser Insurance business for many years.

On July 30, 1968, she was saddened by the sudden death of her husband from an acute heart attack after which she went to work at the Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Company in Phillipsburg.

She would later meet Lawrence Sweat and they were married August 9, 1969.&nbsp; He was a farmer living south of Claudel, KS.&nbsp; They lived on the farm for 5 years until they decided to move to Loveland CO in 1974.

In 2011 they sold their home and moved into the Good Samaritan Village in Loveland, CO.

In August 2012, Lawrence passed away and Beryl continued to live at the Village where she was quite active enjoying all activities.

In August of 2016 she moved into Assisted Living at Columbine Commons in Windsor, CO, where she resided until her passing. She loved to play Bingo with the other residents and very much appreciated the assistance given her from the wonderful caring staff.

She is survived by daughters JoLynn (Marty) Kuebler, Delene Solorio, stepson Stan Sweat (Sandy) stepdaughter Sue (Steve) Blauvelt and sister Donna Hunt. She is survived by numerous grandchildren, step grandchildren and great grand children including a great great granddaughter.

Preceded in death by first husband Warren, sister Pauline Peer Rose and her parents.

Memorial services will be Saturday, September 5, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Randy Hunt officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the Kirwin Cemetery.&nbsp;

She worked at Employment Connections for many years. She and four other individuals&nbsp;had a business&nbsp;called "Good Times Friends."&nbsp; Vickie also worked other jobs while at Employment Connections.&nbsp; She enjoyed going to the Reed Center, going on trips and outings with her roommates, working on puzzles, coloring, knitting, sewing, making blankets and making beautiful hand work. She was a wiz at word searches!&nbsp;

Darrell Dean McGinnis died suddenly at Via Christi, Hays, Kansas with his wife by his side on August 24th&nbsp;2020. He was born on the 23rd&nbsp;of September 1932, in the «&nbsp;Regan&nbsp;» house rental just West of Esbon, Kansas in Jewell County, to Ivan and Frances LORENCE.&nbsp; He was born just after Don and before Connie and Larry.&nbsp;

His parents bought a farm, with the help of Frances’ father. Darrell, in his memoir, speaks fondly of this time, going to country school and playing in the near-by creek. This innocent time came to an end in 1939 with the death of his younger brother Larry (age 2 years and four months) from stomach flu and the loss of the farm after the terrible droughts of the 30's.&nbsp; In 1941 his father moved the family to Missouri.&nbsp; They first rented a farm near Osborne and later bought 133 acres in the Keystone community near St. Joe.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The family moved back to Jewell County in 1947 to a farm south of Esbon.&nbsp; Darrell went to high school there and graduated in 1950.&nbsp; His father died in 1950. Having never liked farm life, and having always enjoyed school more, Darrell took the opportunity to join the Navy to get out and served in San Diego from 1952 to 1956.

He then went to the then “Fort Hays College’ and met Joel Moss, his great mentor, who was in the art department and convinced him to study art there. He graduated in 1960 with a degree in Fine Arts in ceramics.&nbsp;

It is at the art department where he met fellow student Grace Staab and they were married on August 20th1960 at Saint Joseph's Church in Hays.&nbsp; They celebrated 60 years of marriage just four days before his passing.&nbsp;

Their first child, Erin, was born in 1961, and then Martin in 1962 before they moved to Maryville, Missouri, where he got his first teaching job.&nbsp; Collin was born there in 1963.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tragedy struck in 1964 when Marty died of complications of a strep infection and Darrell moved his family back to Hays in 1964 when offered a teaching position at his alma mater.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Two more children followed&nbsp;: Sean in 1965 and Patrick in 1968.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Darrell spent the next 30 years teaching ceramics at Fort Hays State University, before retiring in 1994.&nbsp; He had a special talent as a teacher and many of his students thought of him as an admired mentor and an important influence on them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He created sculptures in an abstract expressionist style, using combinations of simple forms and natural textures, where the clayness of the object was always evident.&nbsp; He showed his work in many exhibits throughout the Midwest and Rockies.

Always the defender of the arts he was one of the founders of the first city arts councils in the country and worked tirelessly while dragging his children along to develop the Hays Arts Council.&nbsp; This included the council's decision to buy the old Hays Daily News building on East 11th&nbsp;Street and convert it into an arts center. In order to raise money he was heavily involved in the fundraisers of haunted houses that were created in the building before it was transformed into the gallery and shops it is now known for.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He had a knack for conversation and was always lagging behind somewhere talking to someone.&nbsp; He could and did strike up a conversation with anyone and was always interested in people.&nbsp; He genuinely liked everyone he met. But he could also take up the battle and fight for the causes he believed in against those that did not share his vision.

He will be remembered by his family for the yearly August vacations taken in a cabin in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado.&nbsp; The cabin was rented from his friends the Gwynns starting in 1968 by trading them sculptures for a week's stay in the mountains.&nbsp; With John Denver records, squeal games, puzzles, bologna gravy and grilled steaks, the yearly time together brought the family close and gave them many wonderful memories.&nbsp; Darrell and Grace bought the cabin in 1986 and the family still goes there every summer, fifty odd years later.

He had many lifelong friends and stayed in contact with him.&nbsp; He was particularly close to his sister Connie, throughout their lives.&nbsp; He had weekly breakfast with the retired art faculty, including Kathleen Kuchar, Mick Jilg, Joyce and Cal Mahon, John Thorns, and Jim and Sue Hinkhouse among others.

He is survived by his wife, Grace of Hays, his daughter Erin Hughes and her husband David, of Hays, his son Collin and his wife Maria of Maize, Kansas, his son Sean and his husband Stéphane Lescoules of Paris, France and his son Patrick and his wife Penny, of Hays.&nbsp; He was much loved by his grandchildren, Martin, Megan, Jeremy, Jessica, Hannah, Anthony, Shelby, Sydney, Emily, Josh, Aubrey, and Andrew and by his great-grandchildren&nbsp;: John, Ada, Ally, Evelyn, Lincoln, and Liam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Frances, his brothers, Don and Larry and a son Martin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 AM Friday, September 4, 2020 at St. Joseph's&nbsp;Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's&nbsp;Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5&nbsp;PM – 8 PM with a combined rosary and parish vigil service at 7 PM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 215 West 13th Street Hays, Kansas 67601.

Phillipsburg resident Dorothy M. Schneider passed away August 30, 2020, at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 94.&nbsp; She was born September 17, 1925, in Norton County, KS.

Survivors include her sons: Lynn of Washington, KS, Wayne of Salina &amp; Bruce of Wichita; her daughter, Val Oestreich of Melissa, TX; 2 sisters, Edna Riemann of Phillipsburg &amp; Mary Billups of Hill City; 8 grandchildren &amp; 10 great grandchildren.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Sept. 3, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating.&nbsp;

Memorial contributions may be made to the SS Philip &amp; James Catholic Church.

Joseph “Joe” Karlton Swaney passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at 
the Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 57. He 
was born on August 23, 1963 to James and Shirley (Ward) Swaney in 
Phillipsburg, Kansas. In September of 1990, he married Kayla (Doty) 
Swaney and together they had four children, Dalton, Sheyenne, Shevelle, 
and Janay. They later divorced.
 Joe grew up around the Rooks County area where he attended Glade 
Grade School and then Stockton High School. He held several jobs as a 
general laborer but for the past 10 years he worked for Michaels 
Corporation out of Topeka as an equipment operator. He loved his job and
 the traveling involved. If he wasn’t working he was fishing, hunting, 
trapping, riding 4-wheelers, farming or working with cattle. Joe was 
known for his fun-loving nature, sarcasm, and always thirsty for a cold 
Coors Light. The times of paintball wars and hunting for lures around 
the lake with his kids are some that will forever be cherished. Although
 tough as nails, and stubborn to a fault, he was taken too soon and the 
memories we have of him are what will last a lifetime.
 He is preceded in death by his father, James Swaney; infant daughter, Sheyenne Swaney; and sister, Karla Blunt.
 Joe is survived by his ex-wife, Kayla Swaney of Stockton; mother, 
Shirley Robinson of Hoxie, KS; children, Dalton (Ashley) Swaney of
