Joseph W. “Joe” Pfeifer, 87, Hays, died Friday, August 13, 2021, at Via Christi Village.

He was born December 3, 1933, in 
Liebenthal, the son of Alexander and Mary (Doerfler) Pfeifer.&nbsp; He 
attended Liebenthal Grade School and graduated from Schoenchen High 
School in 1953.&nbsp; In 1955, he was drafted to play baseball for the 
Philadelphia Athletics.&nbsp; He attended spring training before being 
drafted into the U.S. Army and serving from 1956 until 1962.&nbsp; While 
stationed in Germany, he played baseball and pitched for the Crusaders.&nbsp;
 On May 23, 1955, he was united in marriage to Helen M. Fisher at Our 
Lady Help of Christians Church in Antonino, and they celebrated 66 years
 of marriage.&nbsp; He was an electrical maintenance foreman for Central 
Kansas Power/Midwest Energy for 40 years, retiring in 1994.&nbsp; His 
memberships included Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the VFW 
Post #9076, and Joe and Helen coordinated and helped serve church 
funeral dinners at Immaculate Heart of Mary for many years.&nbsp; Joe was an 
avid baseball fan, pitching for the Ban Johnson League in Hays, 
attending Hays Larks games, and attending home and away Hays High 
School, TMP-Marian High School and Fort Hays State University games.&nbsp; He
 loved watching and traveling to his grandchildren’s games and enjoyed 
watching the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs.

Survivors include his wife Helen of 
Hays, two sons: Terry Pfeifer and wife Donnetta of Hays and Troy Pfeifer
 and wife Dee of Green River, Wyoming, a daughter: Jolene Schaeffer of 
Hays, six grandchildren: Joel Pfeifer and wife Ashley of Olathe, Jordan 
Schaeffer and wife Sarah of Hays, Jason Pfeifer and wife Renee of Hays, 
Jill Mall and husband Tucker of Hays, Danisha Olson and husband Jon of 
Casper, WY, and Michael Pfeifer of Green River, WY, 12 
great-grandchildren: Jameson and Bryant Pfeifer, Noah, Tyler, and Maci 
Schaeffer, Rylan and Jackson Pfeifer, Damien Pfeifer, Harper Olson, 
Sperry, Tracer, and Kimber Mall, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, two brothers: Celly and Jerry Pfeifer, five sisters: Florence 
Matel, Caroline Steckline, Armella Schmidt, Marie Schwartz, and Eleanora
 Schmidt, a son-in-law: Robert Schaeffer, and a grandson: Jeremy Deitz.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church, with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.&nbsp; Burial with military
 honors by the Hays VFW Honor Guard will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp;
 Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 am 
until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A 
vigil service and rosary will be at 6:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral 
home.&nbsp;

Rita Louise Schutte 

Laura Neva (Stratton Adams) Vogt, age 96, passed away on August 12, 
2021, at Greeley County Long Term Care Center in Tribune, Kansas. She 
was born April 2nd, 1925 in Gove County, Kansas, the daughter of Earl 
and Grace (Stillsworth) Stratton. 

She attended country schools and 
graduated from Scott Community High School. From there, her journey took
 her to Wichita, Kansas supporting the war effort at Beechcraft where 
she worked as a riveter; she was one of the original “Rosie’s.” In 1947,
 she married Samuel Leo Adams in El Dorado, Kansas, where they made 
their home. 

Laura contributed to the workforce in many capacities. Her 
jobs included everything from a Trailways Ticket Agent to working for a 
doctor, bank, and lumber yard. She and Leo were blessed with a baby 
girl, Cynthia LeeAnn Adams in 1959. They lost Leo to heart failure in 
1964, and Laura recommitted herself to being the best mother possible 
for her young daughter. Four years later, she met Robert Everett Vogt at
 a dance at the Cotillion in Wichita, and they were united in marriage 
on February 3rd, 1968. She joined Bob on his farm five miles south of 
Tribune, Kansas, which remained her home for the next fifty-plus years. 
This union brought many changes to Cindy and Laura’s life. The move to 
Tribune added four of Bob’s Children to the mix: Gail, Kate, Mike, and 
Jennifer, as well as her first grandchild. 

She spent her childhood on a 
farm, so this life was an easy transition for Laura. She loved animals 
and quickly added many to fill the barn. She reveled in the work and 
driving harvest trucks that were filled with singing children. She 
supported Bob throughout the years as their farm and family grew. Laura 
was able to help foster many happy memories for her ever-growing family.
 She was also a member and volunteer at the First Presbyterian Church in
 Tribune, Kansas, and volunteered as a 4-H leader. During her time in El
 Dorado, she was a Girl Scout Leader. She was a homemaker, an excellent 
gardener, and seamstress, and excelled at cooking and hard work. She was
 able to navigate any endeavor she took on with grace and ease. 
Throughout semi-retirement, she and Bob spent their winters in Aransas 
Pass, Texas fishing in the gulf, which brought great joy to her life. 
She also loved to play games and camp out with her family and friends.

Survivors include: One Son - Robert Michael &amp; Sharon Vogt of 
Tribune, Kansas, Four Daughters - Cynthia &amp; Ronald Miller of 
Tribune, Kansas, Gail &amp; Daryl Miller of Tribune, Kansas, Mary 
Katherine Vogt &amp; Jay Rosner of Mill Valley, California, Jennifer 
&amp; Jeffrey Crockett of Rapid City, South Dakota, Twelve 
Grandchildren, Seventeen Great Grandchildren, and Two Great Great 
Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Two Husbands, and Eight 
Siblings - Elta Lee, Olive, Robert, George, Elsie Ethel, Donna, and 
Beth.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 
the First Presbyterian Church in Tribune, Kansas, with Andrew &amp; 
Desiree Sanders presiding.

Interment will be in the Greeley County Cemetery in Tribune, Kansas.

Laura Neva (Stratton Adams) Vogt

Marjory Nazarenus, 87, died Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City.

She was born on March 4, 1934 at the Gleason Hospital in Larned, the daughter of Harry and Viola (Davis) Tomlinson.

She attended District 61 Country Schools through the third grade and 
then into the Garfield School system.&nbsp; She was a 1953 graduate of Larned
 High School and attended Bethany College in Lindsborg.&nbsp; She moved to 
Dodge City form Garfield in 1955 and graduated from Wilcox Beauty 
Academy in Dodge City. She was the owner and operator of Marjory's 
Beauty Shop in Dodge City and was a member of the First Missionary 
Church, Dodge City, as well as the Dodge City Dollies. She was a very 
talented seamstress, a miniaturist and played the French horn and was 
part of the Cowboy Band, Dodge City Community College Band and Orchestra
 and played at church.

Marjory married to Harold “Naz” Nazarenus on August 26, 1956 at the 
Methodist Church in Garfield. He preceded her in death on September 5, 
2013.

Survivors include: a son, Corbin Nazarenus and wife Terri, Divide, 
Colorado; a daughter, Amy Nichols and husband Kelly, Cimarron; two 
sisters, Evelyn Zimmer, Hutchinson and Virginia Johnson and husband 
Wayne, Quinlan, Texas; 5 grandchildren, Cody Nichols and wife Whitney, 
Scott City, Kayla Strickler and husband Duell, Dodge City, Treva 
VanAuken and husband Brady, Wichita, Jared Nichols and wife Janelyn, 
Dodge City and Alex Nazarenus, Divide, Colorado; and 10 
great-grandchildren, Kinlee, Brooks, Avery, Jayton, Briggs, Lydia, Knox,
 Garette, Beckett and Brayson.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Eugene Tomlinson.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the 
First Missionary Church, Dodge City, with Rev. Adam Rankin officiating. 
Burial will be at 2:30 pm Tuesday in the Garfield Cemetery, Garfield. 
Visitation will be Monday, August 16, 2021 from noon to 8:00 pm at 
Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.

Marjory Nazarenus

Reeta Marie Avery, 80, passed away August 11, 2021 at her residence in Larned, KS.

She was born June 6, 1941 in Lenora, OK the daughter of Marvin and 
Pearl Hart Blaine. She was a 1959 graduate of Taloga High school, 
Taloga, OK. An area resident since October of 2019 moving from Enid, OK 
where she was a secretary and worked at a Beauty College.

She was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed sewing, quilting, 
crocheting and cooking. She also enjoyed listening to Mel Tillis and 
Elvis, who was said to have asked her to be his seamstress. Dogs held a 
special place in her heart.

On April 1, 1990 she married Albert Avery in Medford, OK. He passed away May 20, 2011.

Survivors include: one daughter, Annette (Robin) Hill, Larned, KS.; 
one Brother, Cecil Blaine, Pasadena, TX. and many nieces and nephews 
along with a good friend David Kloss, Larned, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Rickey W.
 Hill; two sisters, Arlis (Russ) Smith and Arlene (Victor) Terbush; one 
sister-in-law, Peggy Blaine.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Reeta Marie Avery

Moneta Alwilda Ray was born on the evening of Oct. 28, 1922 on a farm in White Rock township, Smith County, Kansas, and passed away Aug. 11, 2021 at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center. Her parents were William C. Ray, who passed away in 1930 and Mary T. (May) Ray, who passed away in 1979.

Alwilda attended both rural and town schools and was graduated from Lebanon High School in 1941 with a Normal Training Certificate that enabled her to begin teaching school. She taught several years including White Eagle, Simmons and Lone Star.

She met Marvin Nelssen at the free picture show in Bellaire during her first term of school in 1941. Their courtship was via mail during the 3 ½ years he was in the service during World War II.

Upon his return from the service, they were married March 13, 1946 at the Methodist parsonage in Jewell. Two sons were born to this union, Ronald and Dennis.

They made their first home on Nelssen land in Washington township. After four years, they decided to relocate because of living conditions and bought a farm in Valley Township. It was during the eight years living there they became interested in dairy farming.

Marvin, Alwilda, and family moved to their present home in 1958. She was so grateful when they built their new home in 1967 and the new Grade A dairy barn in 1972. Alwilda was always a help mate with all the farm work and she enjoyed it. She and Marvin were a work team together.

Alwilda was a good homemaker, and it was always her ambition to celebrate holidays and birthdays with a feast around her table with her family that was very special to her. Cooking was not a labor for her, but a joy. Fried chicken and pies were her specialty. When she finally had time to relax, she enjoyed handwork and has made many quilts.

She belonged to the Davenport Ladies Aid and the Womer U.M.W and always interested in the community activities, having served as township trustee for several years, as well as committee woman from Pawnee Township. She loved her church family and attended church whenever possible.

Alwilda is survived by her son, Ronald and wife Jeneane of Red Cloud, Neb., son Dennis and wife Tranda of rural Smith Center, grandson Jason Nelssen and wife Cherie, granddaughter Crystal McEntee, step-grandchildren Aaron Botts, Jill Abbott, Kyle Abbott, and great-grandchildren Jordan Nelssen, Jillian Nelssen, Sebastian VanZant, Clara McEntee, step-great grandchild AJ Botts.

Also surviving are her sister, Melba Base of Sebring, Fla., and sister-in-law Mary Ray, of Denver, and other relatives and friends.

(May) Ray, who passed away in 1979.Alwilda attended both rural and town schools and was graduated from Lebanon High School in 1941 with a Normal Training Certificate that enabled her to begin teaching school. She taught several years including White Eagle, Simmons and Lone Star.She met Marvin Nelssen at the free picture show in Bellaire during her first term of school in 1941. Their courtship was via mail during the 3 ½ years he was in the service during World War II.Upon his return from the service, they were married March 13, 1946 at the Methodist parsonage in Jewell. Two sons were born to this union, Ronald and Dennis. They made their first home on Nelssen land in Washington township. After four years, they decided to relocate because of living conditions and bought a farm in Valley Township. It was during the eight years living there they became interested in dairy farming.Marvin, Alwilda, and family moved to their present home in 1958. She was so grateful when they built their new home in 1967 and the new Grade A dairy barn in 1972. Alwilda was always a help mate with all the farm work and she enjoyed it. She and Marvin were a work team together.Alwilda was a good homemaker, and it was always her ambition to celebrate holidays and birthdays with a feast around her table with her family that was very special to her. Cooking was not a labor for her, but a joy. Fried chicken and pies were her specialty. When she finally had time to relax, she enjoyed handwork and has made many quilts.She belonged to the Davenport Ladies Aid and the Womer U.M.W and always interested in the community activities, having served as township trustee for several years, as well as committee woman from Pawnee Township. She loved her church family and attended church whenever possible. Alwilda is survived by her son, Ronald and wife Jeneane of Red Cloud, Neb., son Dennis and wife Tranda of rural Smith Center, grandson Jason Nelssen and wife Cherie, granddaughter Crystal McEntee, step-grandchildren Aaron Botts, Jill Abbott, Kyle Abbott, and great-grandchildren Jordan Nelssen, Jillian Nelssen, Sebastian VanZant, Clara McEntee, step-great grandchild AJ Botts.Also surviving are her sister, Melba Base of Sebring, Fla., and sister-in-law Mary Ray, of Denver, and other relatives and friends.

Donald Lee Penka, 85, died Aug. 10, 2021, at Medicalodges of Great Bend.&nbsp; He was born October 11, 1935, in Larned, to John and Mary Hazel (Simmons) Penka. Don married Lilly Dreiling Nov. 25, 1963, in Garden City.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Don, a resident of Great Bend since 1963 coming from Garden City, was employed as a clerk supervisor for Dillons and later worked for Werth’s Plumbing and as a custodian for USD 428, retiring in 1998. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council #862, and a current member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where he faithfully served as a homebound Eucharistic Minister.&nbsp; In his younger years, Don served the youth of the community as a bowling coach, and in his retirement he enjoyed woodworking and enthusiastically followed his grandchildren’s activities. Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956.

Survivors include his wife Lilly Penka, of the home; one son, Matt Penka and his wife Christi of Great Bend; two daughters, Michele Smith and husband Delbert of Topeka, and Melissa Sides of Hutchinson; and seven grandchildren, Lauren Penka, Blake Penka, Dru Penka, Sarah Smith, Samantha Smith, Ashley Sides and Braden Sides.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marcene Penka; two brothers, Norman Penka and Elvin Penka; three sisters, Valetta Stroble, Cleta Jackson and Ellen Jo Penka.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Prakash Kola presiding.&nbsp; Interment will be in Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at Bryant Funeral Home, with a Vigil at 7:30 p.m.

Morris J. Froelich – age 87, of Gorham, died Aug. 8, 2021, at the Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born March 26, 1934, in Pharr, Texas to Jonas F. and Sylvia Lee (Cox) Froelich.&nbsp; He married Mary Ann (Whitney) on Nov. 14, 1952, at Lawrence.

He was a roustabout and oil field worker in Russell and Ellis counties for over 40 years.&nbsp; He worked for Kellis Counts, Lonnie King, R.C. Williams, Jack Koron, General Roustabout, and Farley’s Machine Shop.&nbsp; In 1979 he started Froelich Lease Service and retired in 1992.&nbsp; Morris grew up in Gorham and Walker and attended high school in Arnold and Utica. He was a member of the Gorham Community Church, a Boy Scout leader and very active in the community helping others.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Froelich, of the home; one son, Morris A. Froelich and wife, Marie, Hays; one daughter, Shelley M. Oden and husband, Bruce, Russell; one sister, Inabelle Wilkerson, Dighton; four grandchildren: Jill Russell (Bill); Walter Oden Jr.; Pamela Oden; Jaimie Oden; one granddaughter-in-law, Savanna&nbsp; Froelich; seven great-grandchildren: Kaeleah Russell; Brynn Russell; Severin Oden; Marissa Froelich; Afton Froelich; Joselin Froelich; Victoria Froelich. &nbsp;

Michael “Mike” Reever passed away at his home in Olathe, Kansas, on 
August 8, 2021, after a brief illness. He was 55. 
Mike was born on September 18, 1965, in Hays, Kansas, to Richard and 
Janet (Myers) Reever. He married Tomasina Rattarree on August 12, 1989. 
 They later divorced.  He married Mandy Whitehead on September 22, 2001,
 and they later divorced. 


Mike attended Hays High School.  He followed 
in his dad’s footstep and spent his career working in construction, most
 recently as a superintendent at Grayling, Inc., in Kansas City. Mike 
enjoyed NASCAR, watching the Kansas City Chiefs, driving his boat around
 Smithville Lake with his family onboard, and planning his next travel 
adventure.  He always wanted to help others and was as real as a person 
could be.  

His children were the light of his life.  He 
is survived by Christopher, Hannah, and Alexandra; granddaughter, Layla;
 ex-wives, Tomasina and Mandy; siblings, Dale, Traci Burney (Jim), Marci
 (Steve Handley), Jami (Kim Simons) Kyle (Heather) and TJ; many nieces 
and nephews, aunts and uncles and cousins. He is preceded in death by 
his parents and grandparents. 

Services will be on Friday, August 13, at 2:00 p.m. at McGilley and Frye Funeral Home 105 East Loula Street Olathe, Kansas.

Michael Dean Reever

Arthur Irvin Pember, 89, passed away on August 10, 2021 at the Cedar 
Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on December 5, 
1931 in Ness City, Kansas the son of Irvin and Minnie (Koester) Pember.

Art was a life-long farmer and rancher. He met his wife of over 50 
years while racing on the highways of Ness County.&nbsp; Both Art and Wiletta
 took great pride in the quality of cattle they raised on the ranch that
 was settled by his grandfather in 1885.&nbsp; A habit of hard work and 
dedication to the Lord were paramount to the longevity of his life, 
marriage and standing within the community.&nbsp; With Faith as a 
cornerstone, Art and his family were able to weather the many ups and 
downs that come with the life of a farmer/rancher.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, a past president of 
the Ness County Fair Board, and a member of the Ness County Historical 
Society, Right Coop, and Farm Management Association, and a pillar of 
the community.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Myrna Post of Claflin, Marianne Lee of
 Ardmore, Ok; 4 grandchildren, Tatum Lee (and husband, Scott Hahn) of 
Ness City, Chris Post of Little Rock, AR, Tisha Rein (and husband, 
Travis) of Wichita, Evan Post of Basehor, KS; and 1 great-grandchild, 
Josie Mae Post of Little Rock, AR. He was preceded in death by his 
parents, wife, Wiletta, grandson, Ryan, and 4 sisters, Oma Burns, Valda

Margaret F. Langhofer, 80, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday August
 3, 2021, at her daughter’s home in Denver, Colorado, from cancer, 
surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born on December 3, 1940 in Glasgow, Scotland to William and 
Margaret Rea, the second of four children. Margaret came to the United 
States “because I wanted something different,” on July 12, 1960. She 
worked as an au pair and in manufacturing before meeting her husband 
Larry L. Langhofer, of Bunker Hill, KS, through mutual friends while 
Larry was serving in the Army at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. They 
were married within the year and made their home in Russell, KS. They 
had two children. A son, Mike “Lefty” Langhofer; and a daughter, Jody M.
 McGuirk (Bebermeyer).

Margaret worked at Russell High School, A &amp; W Restaurant, and 
Yost’s at different points in her life, and was a farmer’s wife. As a 
farmer’s wife she helped with the farm as often as needed and was known 
for her delicious harvest dinners. She was also very active in Girl 
Scouts and was a Troup Leader for many years. She loved the Girl Scout 
organization and it brought her a lot of joy. She was especially fond of
 taking her troops on camping trips. In her spare time Margaret enjoyed 
reading and watching mysteries; crafts including sewing and knitting; 
and most importantly spending time with her granddaughter Rinley. Many 
in the community remember Margaret for her smile, sense of humor, and 
willingness to lend a hand.

Surviving family include her daughter Jody M. McGuirk and husband 
Ryan H. McGuirk of Denver, Colorado; granddaughter Rinley A. McGuirk of 
Denver, Colorado; one sister and brother, as well as many nieces, 
nephews, and great nieces and nephews in the United Kingdom.

Her husband, her son, her parents, and one brother, preceded her in 
death. &nbsp; There will be an outdoor memorial service Saturday August 14, 
2021 at 9 a.m. at Cecil Bricker Park located at 805 N. Main Street, 
Russell, KS to celebrate her life. There will be light refreshments 
served afterwards. Margaret wished to be cremated and her ashes taken to
 Scotland to be scattered. &nbsp;

A memorial fund is set up in her honor and 
proceeds will go to Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland.

Larry Dechant, 71, died Monday, August 9, 2021, at his home in Garden 
City, Kansas. He was born November 9, 1949, in Garden City, Kansas the 
son of Manuel &amp; Elizabeth “Betty” (Pfeiffer) Dechant. 
 Larry has been a lifetime resident of Garden City. He attended 
Garden City schools and graduated form Garden City High School. He 
served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from March of 
1970 to October of 1971. Larry was the owner and operator of Dechant 
Retail Liquor in Garden City for 14 years. He then worked for many 
years as a groundskeeper for USD #457 until his retirement. 
 Survivors include four sisters Betty Heath of Leoti, Kansas, 
Rosemary Wasinger of Scott City, Kansas, Joyce York of Ft. Worth, Texas,
 &amp; Debra Robinson of Holcomb, Kansas; two brothers Ronald Dechant of
 Garden City, Kansas and James “Jake” Dechant of Garden City, Kansas; 
and many nieces and nephews. 
 Larry is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Alex 
Dechant and Ken Dechant; and two sisters Linda Sinclair and Evelyn 
Berning. 
 A private family interment will take place at a later date at 
Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with military graveside rites 
conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard. There will be 
no calling hours.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Jeremy Lee Stein, 40, died Monday, August 9, 2021, at his home in Spearville.

He was born January 29, 1981, at Kinsley, the son of Kelly and Rita 
(Downey) Stein.&nbsp; He was a graduate of Spearville High School and a 
lifetime Spearville area resident.&nbsp; He worked as an Applicator for the 
Right Coop from 2001 to 2012, the Offerle Coop for 9 years and most 
recently for Pride Ag.&nbsp; He attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church
 and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1539 both in 
Spearville.&nbsp; He loved welding, leather work, and woodworking and enjoyed
 fishing and hunting.&nbsp; He had a special love of cooking for his family 
and friends including his infamous carrot cake.

On September 14, 2013, he married Ashley Ormsby on the Stein Family Farm near Spearville.&nbsp; She survives.

Other survivors include: their children, Eleanor and Benjamin Stein, 
of the home; his father and mother, Kelly and Rita Stein, Spearville; 
his siblings, Jason Stein and wife Rebecca, Hays; Renee Miller, Great 
Bend; and Adam Stein and wife Raven, Spearville; mother-in-law, Heather 
Chappell and husband Ken, Bucklin; father-in-law, Wade Ormsby, Marsing,

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Melvin and Shirley

Funeral Mass will be at 1:00 pm Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at St. 
John the Baptist Church, Spearville, with Fr. John Forkuoh presiding.&nbsp; 
There will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Friends may
 sign the register Tuesday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral

Kuper Eugene Jones was born August 21, 1983, in Colby, Kansas, 
surrounded by friends, family and a world of love. He started his 
journey of life fighting, born premature, weighing in at just 4 pounds 8
 ounces. The day after making his appearance, he was sent to face open 
heart surgery head on. This is when Kup first showed the world his 
heart- it being only comparable to that of a lion. Kuper carried this 
heart on his chest from his first breath to his last. We can all attest 
to that. Even before the first grade Kuper tackled Guillain-Barre that 
had him paralyzed from the eyes down. He was bound and determined to 
show that heart again, proving countless people wrong, when he walked to
 his first day of school. 
Kuper was a lover of all things, but mostly all things sports. This 
passion was inherited from his grandparents, Harold and Grace Jones, and
 helped to shape Kuper into the “well of sports knowledge” that he 
ultimately became. Kuper was not afraid of anything. Period. He was 
certainly not afraid of making sure everyone knew what his favorite 
teams were and why. Kuper had a steady stream of defensive talk backing 
his Cleveland Browns. If you were to ask Kup before any football season 
he'd tell you to “look out for them Brownies this year, this is going to
 be their year!” Kuper loved sports so much that after obtaining his 
general education, he further pursued journalism on his journey to 
becoming a part of, and documenting, any kind of competition. Along with
 being a very charismatic and handsome fella, Kuper always had a way 
with words. He was an amazing sports broadcaster and showed his 
versatility when proving he could call not only basketball (his 
passion), but football, wrestling, and volleyball, to name a few. 
Kuper also loved being a coach. He played a huge role in creating the 
sports animal we all know and love, his son Dominik. Kuper coached Dom 
in countless basketball games, in which he gave no favoritism. Kuper 
made sure to teach Dom the triangle offense before the kid knew his 
ABC’s! Dominik is on his way to a full-ride playing basketball and 
Kuper, we know, would be so proud. He loved being able to be a part of 
his community in helping to raise these young athletes to their fullest 
potential. Kuper saw greatness in games and individuals that only one 
with passion could catalogue. 
Kuper also carried with him a passion for music. As an adolescent he 
tried his hand at the guitar and the trumpet before realizing that his 
niche would be in rap. Kuper was an amazing songwriter and was well on 
his way to making hip hop interesting again. Kuper was not afraid to 
steal the show. He loved to perform whether it be in the backyard in 
front of the dog or on a stage in front of a crowd acting a fool. 
Kuper was not afraid of having a good time, and if he was having a good 
time, that meant the same for the people around him. Kuper loved, and he
 showed that love in a funny way sometimes, but Kuper was a caring soul.
 He was able to make one feel comfort when nobody else's words could 
even be heard. He never judged for, “He who is without sin is the one 
who can cast the first stone.” Kuper Eugene Jones left this physical 
world on August 6, 2021. 
He was preceded in death by his Grandfather Harold Eugene Jones (his 
hero) and his uncle Donald Eugene Jones. He is survived by his son 
Dominik Eugene Jones; his grandmother Grace Irene Jones; his mother 
Linda Hubert; sisters, Tammi Parks and Kat Wright; brothers, Boone Huff,
 Shane Huff, Chris Hubert and Joe Schwerbert and a host of aunts, 
uncles, cousins and a large number of friends. He will never be 
forgotten.

Phillipsburg resident Donald O. Young, age 89, passed away at his home on August 4, 2021.

Donald was born February 5, 1932, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the son of Lloyd R. and Catherine (McDonald) Young.

In 1950, Donald joined the United States Marine Corps and was 
honorably discharged as Sergeant in 1954. &nbsp;He worked for many years as a
 court appointed officer for the Department of Child Support Services in
 San Bernardino County, California.&nbsp; He retired in 1985.

Don spent most of his retirement years on his boat in Roche Harbor on
 San Jaun Island in San Juan County, Washington.&nbsp; He loved sailing and 
traveling to visit his children.&nbsp; In 2015, while visiting his son Dean, 
he decided to purchase a house in Phillipsburg, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Catherine; sister 
Carolynda Erskine; a son Cole Young; and two daughters Teresa Garrison 
and Linda Swift.

Survivors include two sons Dean Young and wife Wanda of Brookings, OR
 and Michael R. Young of Coeur d’Alene, ID; 3 grandchildren; 2 
step-grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and 7 step great grandchildren.

Cremation was planned.&nbsp; At Donald’s request, no services are planned.

Martha Lou “Marty” Brooks (nee Lewis), 84, was born in Cape Girardeau, 
Mo., to William and Linda Lewis. She attended Trinity Lutheran School 
and Central High School before earning an Associate of Arts degree in 
1958 from St. John’s College, Winfield, KS.
 In 1961, she married M. Thomas Brooks, who was a student at 
Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO. While there, she taught at Ebenezer 
Lutheran School and again at Trinity Lutheran School in Santa Ana, CA, 
during Brooks’s vicarage or internship.
 In Rev. Brooks’s 36-year ministry in churches in Missouri and 
Kansas, Marty worked as a nurses’ aide and in a pediatric clinic. Her 
primary concern, however, was always her family, her church and those 
she met. Her engaging personality helped her reach out to others, making
 a friend by being a friend. 
 When Rev. Brooks retired in 2000, the couple moved to Forsyth, MO, 
where they lived in a beautiful lakeside home. In 2018 they moved to 
Wichita, KS, to be closer to their children.
 The couple was blessed with and is survived by three children: Mary 
Liz (Bruce) Brittain of Andover, KS; Paul (Tonya) of Archer City, TX; 
and Matthew (Krista) of Hays, KS; eight grandchildren: Evan Brittain, 
Hanna (Jake) Huber; Jacey, Jahna and Tessa Brooks; Tommy, Nathaniel and 
Jayne Brooks; her sister Mary (Tom) Schaefer; one niece, Jami (Nathan) 
Cuka; and one nephew, Joel (Amy) Schaefer.
 Marty died Aug. 7, 2021. A loving spouse, mother and grandmother, 
Marty was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and strong supporter of
 her family and church. Her life was a fulfillment of Proverbs 3:5-6: 
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own 
understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your 
paths straight.”
 Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at Gloria Dei 
Lutheran Church, 1101 N. River Blvd., Wichita. Memorials can be made to 
Gloria Dei and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS

Martha Lou 'Marty' Brooks

Charles "Chuck" or "Charlie" Raymond Frank, 89, of 
Salina went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday July 14, 2021. 
Chuck was born September 30, 1931, in Hays, KS to the late Joseph Samuel 
and the late Mary Rose (Schumacher) Frank.

He married Norma Marie Hickert on April19, 1954, at New Almelo, KS.

Chuck was an Airman for the U.S. Marine Corp, Air Wing, Cherry Point,
 NC. He was assigned to duties aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea in the 
Mediterranean Sea and the U.S.S Bennington off the coast of Cuba. &nbsp;

Chuck was the vice president of J.S. Frank Construction in Salina, a 
project manager for Turnmar Construction Co. in Englewood, CO and a 
project manager for Cherokee General Contractors, Inc. in Denver, CO. 
Additionally he was a self-employed general contractor in Aurora, CO and
 an estimator and field superintendent for Western Property Management 
Co. in Denver, CO.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, Salina; son, Richard, Lenora, KS; 
daughter Gretchen (Gene) Browning, Huntsville, TX; son Jerry (Greta), 
Salina; daughter Angela (Len) York Crane, Philadelphia, PA. 
Grandchildren Russell York, Charles York (Sophie Lipman), Joshua 
(Courtney) York, Brandy Frank (Tim Elder). Great grandson Levi 
Faulhaber. Sisters Jenny Keeler, Salina; MaryJo Schuster, Sheboygan, WI 
and many nieces and nephews.

Chuck was preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa Frank; his 
parents J.S. and Mary Frank; his brothers Francis and Leroy; his sisters
 Edna, Delores and Margaret.

Cremation has been chosen. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.
 Monday, August 16, 2021, at Emmanuel Salina, 1325 E. Cloud, Salina.

 </figure>Charles "Chuck" or "Charlie" Raymond Frank, 89, of 
Salina went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday July 14, 2021. 
Chuck was born September 30, 1931, in Hays, KS to the late Joseph Samuel 
and the late Mary Rose (Schumacher) Frank.He married Norma Marie Hickert on April19, 1954, at New Almelo, KS.Chuck was an Airman for the U.S. Marine Corp, Air Wing, Cherry Point,
 NC. He was assigned to duties aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea in the 
Mediterranean Sea and the U.S.S Bennington off the coast of Cuba. &nbsp;Chuck was the vice president of J.S. Frank Construction in Salina, a 
project manager for Turnmar Construction Co. in Englewood, CO and a 
project manager for Cherokee General Contractors, Inc. in Denver, CO. 
Additionally he was a self-employed general contractor in Aurora, CO and
 an estimator and field superintendent for Western Property Management 
Co. in Denver, CO.He is survived by his wife, Norma, Salina; son, Richard, Lenora, KS; 
daughter Gretchen (Gene) Browning, Huntsville, TX; son Jerry (Greta), 
Salina; daughter Angela (Len) York Crane, Philadelphia, PA. 
Grandchildren Russell York, Charles York (Sophie Lipman), Joshua 
(Courtney) York, Brandy Frank (Tim Elder). Great grandson Levi 
Faulhaber. Sisters Jenny Keeler, Salina; MaryJo Schuster, Sheboygan, WI 
and many nieces and nephews.Chuck was preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa Frank; his 
parents J.S. and Mary Frank; his brothers Francis and Leroy; his sisters
 Edna, Delores and Margaret.Cremation has been chosen. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.

Charles Raymond Frank

Timothy Clay Null, age 65, of Salina, KS, passed 
away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, August 6, 2021. Tim was born on
 April 12, 1956, in WaKeeney, KS and is the son of Lewis “Jack” Null, 
Peggy Null (Hildebrand), Benjamin Koralek, and Lillian Koralek (Choitz).
 A 1972 graduate of Ellsworth High School, Tim went on to proudly serve 
in the United States Marine Corps. Tim was a lineman for KP&amp;L before
 retiring as a Distribution Systems Operator for Westar Energy.

Tim married the love of his life, Carla J. Null (Kohls) on August 21,
 1976, in Ellsworth, KS. Tim and Carla had two children, Erin and Andrew.

To know Tim, was to love him. Tim’s eyes sparkled with every smile 
and he had an infectious laugh that easily made the day better. Tim 
enjoyed woodworking, sewing, tinkering, being his grandkids biggest 
cheerleader, joking, finishing up that “one last thing” (project he was 
working on), cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and loving his family. 
Tim never knew a stranger and told everyone who would listen about his 
grandkids, who are his pride and joy. Tim devoted his life to his wife, 
children, and grandchildren, whom he adored and cherished. Tim stood 
firm in his faith and lived his life for Jesus.

Tim is survived by his wife, Carla of the home; his daughter, Erin 
(Pinson) and son-in-law Chad of Lyons, KS; his son, Andrew and 
daughter-in-law Miriam of Colorado Springs, CO; and his grandchildren: 
Willow, Blake, Dharma, Mallory, and Eloise. He is also survived by his 
brother, Pat Null (Teresa); sister, Lonnie Soukup (Donald); brother, 
Chant Koralek; brother, Dave Koralek (Marge); brother-in-law, Scott 
Kohls (Barb); sister-in-law/nephew, Angela and Joshua Kohls; many 
nieces, nephews, friends, and co-workers who were very special to him.

Tim was preceded in death by his father, Jack Null; his dad and mom, 
Ben and Lil Koralek; his mother-in-law, Lois Kohls; his brother-in-law, 
Craig Kohls; his brother, Mike Null; and his sister-in-law, Gladys 
Koralek.

Tim’s family would like to invite you to a Celebration of Life 
Service at 2:30 on Friday, August 13, 2021 at the Episcopal Christ 
Cathedral Church Fellowship Hall, located at 138 South 8th, Salina, KS. 
Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to 
Punchin’ Out Parkinson’s of Central Kansas in Tim’s memory, located at 
600 East Elm Street in Salina, KS.

Charlene Ann Weigel (formerly Charlene Walters), 91,
 of Salina, was born to Joseph and Mary Walters on March 10, 1930, in 
Hays, Kansas passed away peacefully on August 9, 2021.

She was married to her sweetheart, Donald Gene Weigel (deceased) for 
63 years. They had four children, Kathleen Weigel of Topeka, Karen Beil 
of Olathe, Donald M Weigel of Hutchinson, and Dennis Weigel of Salina. 
She leaves behind nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Charlene was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Mary Queen of the 
Universe Church, Salina, KS. She will always be remembered for her 
unending love of family.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, August 12,&nbsp;2021 at Ryan Mortuary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday&nbsp;August 13,&nbsp;2021 at 
St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial to follow in Mt. Calvary Catholic
 Cemetery.

Charlene Ann Weigel

Chester E. Fairchild Jr., age 73, passed away on Saturday, August 7, 
2021, at The Ranch House in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on August 
17, 1947, in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Chester Earl and Velma 
Blanche Turley Fairchild Sr.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Scott City, 
Kansas, moving recently to Garden City, Kansas.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Scott City, Kansas, and was a US Army Veteran.

On May 23, 1970, he married Gloria Morales, and on February 14, 1986,
 he married Brenda Cooley, and then on March 7, 1996, he married Becky 
Bilson.

Survivors include One Daughter - Sydney McCoin of Missouri, and Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, One Brother and Two Sisters.

Memorial Services will be held at&nbsp;3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 15, 2021,&nbsp; at the First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas with Steve Payne 
presiding.

Joann (Hammerschmidt) Shapiro, 79, formerly of Hays, passed away July 23, 2021 in Orange County, California.

Born March 13, 1942 to Eugene and Amelia Hammerschmidt of Hays, Joann grew up on their farm north of Hays where she was active in the Buckeye community and 4-H. Following graduation from Girls Catholic High School, she received her cosmetology license and worked at Blanche’s Salon until moving to California in the late 1960s where she met and married Jerome Shapiro. She eventually owned her own salon in the Orange County area until she retired. Joann was avid for crafts and enjoyed sewing.

Joann was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother Dennis, and sister Lila Schippers and brother-in-law Norman Schippers, and a nephew Daniel Hammerschmidt. 

She is survived by her son William (Jenny) and two special granddaughters Jessica and Jayden, brothers Wayne (Marilee) of Galesburg, Illinois, Neil (Carolyn) of Bloomington, Indiana, and Mark (Bernice) of Hays, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her family and friends were privileged to know her spirit of generosity and kindness, and her joy of living life to its fullest.

Grayson Salmon Gregg, three months 24 days, passed away Monday August
 9, 2021, in Great Bend. He was born April 13, 2021, in Hays, the son of
 Ben Gregg and Korryn Asuncion.

Grayson was a happy content baby. He was loved by family and friends,
 he will be missed by his mother, father, grandparents and other family 
members. &nbsp;

Survivors include father Ben Gregg and mother Korryn Asuncion of the 
home; grandparents Shannon and Julie Gregg of Great Bend and Jeff and 
Rebecca Hurley of Hays; uncles Zachary and Alexander Gregg both of Great
 Bend, Ethan Asuncion and Tray Hurley both of Hays; Aunt Cicily 
Carrillo-Gregg of Great Bend.

Visitation with family present will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday
