Irma C. Staab, 89, Catharine, died Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at HaysMed.

She
 was born July 30, 1932 ,in Catharine, the daughter of Albert C. and 
Cherubim (Giebler) Staab.&nbsp; Irma devoted her whole life to the Catholic 
Church.&nbsp; She was a part-time housekeeper for the Capuchins at St. Joseph
 Church in Hays for 20 years, cleaned the St. Catherine Catholic Church 
for 20 years, and was the first CCD teacher in the St. Catherine parish 
after the nuns left.&nbsp; Her memberships included:&nbsp; St. Catherine Catholic 
Church, the St. Catherine Altar Society Christian Mothers, and the 
Secular Franciscan Order of Victoria.&nbsp; On April 23, 2003, the Capuchins 
affiliated her to the Order of Friars Minor and the Capuchin Province of
 Mid-America.&nbsp; She enjoyed Bingo, genealogy, old family photographs, and
 researching the Staab family heritage.

Survivors
 include three sisters: Mary Lang of Hays, Patricia A. Staab of Russell,
 and Roseann Seader of Louisville, CO, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She
 was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Elmer Staab, 
Marion Staab, Roland Staab, and her twin brother Irwin Staab, and one 
sister: Arlene Clyncke.

Mass
 of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday, August 16, 2021, at 
St. Catherine Catholic Church, with Fr. Earl Befort officiating.&nbsp; Burial
 will follow in the church cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm 
until 7:00 on Sunday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 
am until 10:00 on Monday at the church.&nbsp; An Altar Society Christian 
Mothers rosary will be at 6:00 pm followed by a vigil service at 6:30 
pm, all on Sunday at the funeral home.&nbsp; 

Memorials are suggested to the

Rita Janet Romine, 83, died August 9, 2021, at Morton County Nursing 
Home, Elkhart.&nbsp; She was born September 15, 1937, in Great Bend, to 
Herman and Lillie Josephine (Mull) Strobel.&nbsp; Rita married James Keith 
Romine October 15, 1955, in Great Bend.&nbsp; James died June30,2020.

Rita, a lifetime resident of Great Bend, was a member of Prince of 
Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and 
the Altar Society.&nbsp; She was an active farm wife, and in her younger 
years, was employed by a Colonel as a secretary at Salina Air Force 
Base.&nbsp; Rita enjoyed reading, gardening, square dancing and playing 
pitch.

Survivors include two sons, Kent Romine and wife Valerie of Great 
Bend, and Kevin Romine and wife Tammy of Great Bend; one daughter, 
Marita Walls and husband Dan of Elkhart; son-in-law Paul Schneweis of 
Great Bend; and eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren, Melissa
 Tudor (Damian) and son Trace, Ashley Romine-Guerra (Izzy Guerra) and 
children Teegan, Raquel and Owen, Jessica Ferguson (Dustin) and children
 Grace and Hayden, Kirk Walls, Dr. James Walls (Lindsay), Lindsey White 
(Kendrick), Chad Romine (Taylor), and Ryan Romine.

Rita was preceded in passing by her husband James; one daughter, 
Renee Schneweis; and two brothers, Joseph Strobel and Richard Strobel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 
2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Aneesh

Gary E. Harman, age 73, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, August 6, 2021, in Hays.

Gary was born on December 16, 1947, to Harry and Fern&nbsp;Harman.&nbsp; Gary is survived by his brothers, Rick and wife, Rose, Hays; and Steve Harman, Texas.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Fern Harman and infant sister, Kimberly Harman.

Gary enjoyed crafting, working jigsaw puzzles, doing word searches, and keeping up on what was happening in town.&nbsp; Gary also leaves behind&nbsp;his DSNWK family and friends.

Donna Kay Klusener, 64, passed away August 8, 2021, at Ellinwood 
District Hospital, Ellinwood.&nbsp; She was born March 16, 1957, in Ellinwood
 to Don and Margaret (Molder) Arnold.&nbsp; Donna married Curtis Klusener 
March 20, 1976, in Great Bend.&nbsp;

Donna, a life time resident of Ellinwood, was employed as an 
admission attendant and secretary for Ellinwood District Hospital.&nbsp; She 
was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and served as the secretary 
treasurer for Cheyenne Bottoms Sportsmen Club.&nbsp; Donna enjoyed arts and 
crafts, fishing and swimming.

Survivors include husband, Curtis Klusener, of the home; one son: 
Curtis Klusener, Jr. of Great Bend; two brothers, Terry Arnold of 
Weatherford, Texas; Patrick Schreck of Wichita, and step-father Maurice 
Schreck of Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in 
death by her parents.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2021, at 
Calvary Baptist Church in Ellinwood, with Pastor Jason Winget 
presiding.&nbsp; Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery,

Joaquina Hardon, beloved wife and mother passed away, with loved ones at
 her bedside, on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at age 89, following a brief 
illness. 
Joaquina was born on March 20, 1932, in Dexter, NM to Eutimio &amp; 
Maria Lopez. She grew up in a large family, on a farm, and graduated 
from Dexter High School in 1950. In New Mexico, she met and married 
Albert Hardon on June 5, 1967. Together they raised two daughters, 
Gloria and Amber, and son Carlos. 
Joaquina was always hard-working, but she also had a playful spirit, 
which brightened the lives of her family, friends and loved ones. They 
all have fond memories of her two-stepping through the living room, as 
she loved to dance. Life on the farm was what she preferred and keeping 
busy, knowing there was always something to be done. She was a hard 
worker whether it be in the home, in the garden or on the farm alongside
 her husband Albert. Driving a grain truck during the wheat harvest, 
driving truckloads of silage in the fall, and taking meals to the field 
were just a few of the things she enjoyed doing. 
Blessed with good health and strength, she enjoyed walking and 
maintained a 4 mile per day routine for many years and well into her 
eighties. She always called herself, “a jack of all trades and master of
 none.” However, those lucky enough to sit at her &amp; Albert’s dinner 
table soon realized her mastery of cooking &amp; homemaking. She was a 
dedicated wife &amp; mother, who always put her family first. In her 
spare time, she crocheted beautiful baby blankets for gifts, which 
graced many cribs. They are a tangible symbol of her love for all 
children. 
Joaquina was preceded in death by her father Eutimio; her mother, Maria; seven siblings and her son-in-law Kyle Warning. 
She is survived by her husband Albert; her three children, Gloria 
Warning, Amber (Mick Ranney) &amp; Carlos; three grandchildren, Melanie 
(Mike) Seegers, Michelle Hosman &amp; Justin (Tiffany) Warning; seven 
great-grandchildren, Bailey &amp; Austin Seegers, McKenna &amp; Luke 
Hosman, Lindsay (Issac) Hueftle, Wyatt &amp; Jordyn Warning; her brother
 Manuel (Rose) Lopez; her sister Anita (Martin Hernandez) Maner and 
numerous nieces &amp; nephews.

Keith William Gnad, 61, of Overland Park, Kansas, died Saturday, June 19, 2021, at Advent Health, Shawnee Mission, Merriam, KS. He was born June 9, 1960, in Hays to Clarence and Janet L.&nbsp; (Morin) Gnad.

Keith graduated from Hoisington High School, class of 1978. During that time, Keith developed a passion for photography, becoming a member of the yearbook staff and winning several photography awards.&nbsp; Even prior to graduating he performed brick laying jobs, such as homes and fireplaces without any supervision.&nbsp; Following graduation, he worked as a mason for his uncle, Mike Gnad. Keith lived in Hays, Great Bend and Kansas City before settling in Little Rock, Arkansas where he formed his own successful company, Gnad Tile &amp; Masonry.&nbsp; In his free time, he worked as a photography teacher at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, focusing primarily on black and white photography.&nbsp;

Keith was preceded in death by his father, and by his sister, Yvonne Burtt.&nbsp; He is survived by his mother, Hays; children, Chantz Gnad, Overland Park; Austen Gnad (Angie Westcott), Kansas City, MO; Samuel and Carver Gnad, Sherwood, AR; siblings Christina Smith (Ron), Hoisington; Steven Gnad, Hays; Leah Beck (Art), Montezuma; and Tracy Gnad (Noemi) Peculiar, MO; nieces and nephews Wendy Carr, Sean (Kira) Burtt, Shannon Burtt, Jessica Beck, Jordan Beck, Julian Gnad, Christopher Gnad, Steven Gnad, and Cindy Garrett.

Arden H. Knobbe, age 82, passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at 
the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. He was born on September 13, 
1938, in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Edward Henry and Gertrude Mary 
Nienaber Knobbe.&nbsp; A resident of Marienthal, Kansas since 2006 moving 
from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.&nbsp; Arden was a licensed mortician before 
starting Knobbes Heating &amp; Air Inc. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana that 
he ran for over 30 years.

He was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of 
Columbus both of Marienthal, Kansas, and was a US Air Force Veteran.

On November 25, 1961, he married Virginia F. Berning in Marienthal, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives.

Larry Dale Montandon, 73, left this earth Sunday, April 5, 2020, at 
Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tennessee. Larry was born to 
Virgil and Hazel (Grounds) Montandon in Liberal, Kansas, on January 11, 
1947. He grew up on a ranch near Wallace, Kansas, and enjoyed being a 
big brother to his three sisters.

In 1970, he married Evelyn Reust in Guymon, Oklahoma, and together 
they raised two daughters. He was the kind of father you looked up to. 
He was tough yet fair, stood for right and never walked away from a 
challenge.

Larry loved his family and his country and was a steadfast advocate 
for Veterans and proud to be one. He never knew a stranger, nor met a 
horse or dog he didn't like, including his beloved horse Poco and his 
dogs Snoopy and Labrusky. Throughout his life, he found peace riding 
horses, listening to the geese and observing our natural world. He loved
 traveling with Evelyn, exploring new restaurants and roads, and 
enjoying his back-porch view of the Smoky Mountains.

Larry wore many different hats, but one of his favorites was his 
cowboy hat. He farmed and ranched with Evelyn and his parents for nearly
 30 years, and that straw hat was atop his head often as he worked 
cattle or cut wheat. Larry was also proud to serve his nation and the 
men and women he led in the United States Armed Services, retiring as a 
Sergeant First Class in 1998. Larry was a Persian Gulf War veteran and a
 member of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Air Force Reserve, and Kansas 
National Guard.

He also served as a District Magistrate Judge in Northwest Kansas; 
Manager of Kansas Veterans Cemeteries in WaKeeney and Fort Dodge; 
Director of the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, and Director 
of the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson, South 
Carolina.

Our cowboy and soldier has ridden off into the sunset and will be 
missed, but Larry just may be sitting on a porch with his loved ones and
 fellow Veterans, reunited and sharing stories.

Larry is survived by his wife, Evelyn Montandon; daughters, Shantel 
Smith and husband Sean and Lennea Montandon; and grandchildren, Ryan and
 Savannah Smith and Cyrus Montandon. He is also survived by his sisters,
 Kaye Abel (John), Pat Schmitt (Dennis), and Shirley Myers (Larry); 
brother-in-Law, George Reust (Pauline); sisters-in-law Susie Hughey and 
Carrol Bursell (Chester); numerous nieces and nephews, and good friends.

Preceding Larry in death include his parents, Virgil and Hazel

Janet Neighbors passed away surrounded by her loved ones on August 8, 2021, at Great Plains Health in North Platte, Nebraska, at the age of 72.

Janet was born on November 13, 1948, in Hays, KS, to George and Hilda
 Bollig. She grew up in North Platte where she graduated from St. 
Patrick's High School in 1966 then attended Airline Training School in 
Denver, graduating in '67.

Janet met the love of her life, Glenn Neighbors, in Denver while he 
was serving in the U.S. Air Force. The couple married September 2, 1967,
 and were blessed with 53 years of marriage, two children, Glenn, Jr. 
and Heidi, and four grandchildren. Her family was her life, and her 
husband was her best friend. Janet and Glenn cherished their moments 
together and were truly in love with each other.

Janet worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. then was privileged 
to later stay home and raise her children. Once the children were older,
 Janet worked at JC Penney, Messiah Lutheran Church as secretary, and 
Walmart.

Janet met her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ in December 1975. She 
attended The Rock Church and actively served in many areas from deacon 
board to pianist and secretary, youth teacher, ladies group and bible 
studies, and assisted Glenn with rest home services. She was also a Cub 
Scout den mother and proudly supported her children's and later 
grandchildren's activities. Janet enjoyed doing crafts and puzzles, 
spending time with her friends, bowling on women's leagues, and working 
out with her pool pals at the North Platte Rec Center.

Janet loved Jesus, her family and her friends. Her life was a blessing to those who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Hilda Bollig; 
sisters, Cheryl Keith and Darlene Hentges; twin brothers, Lawrence and 
Doorance Bollig; nephew, Gregory Folchert; Glenn's father and 
stepmother, Ron and Angela Neighbors; brothers-in-law, Nicholas Lastoka,
 Lyle Keith and John Hentges; and Glenn's stepbrothers, Art and George 
Aurand.

Janet is survived by her husband, Glenn, Sr., and son, Glenn, Jr., of
 North Platte; daughter, Heidi (Sid, Jr.) Fessler, of Broken Bow;

Clarice Elaine Peteete&nbsp;(Kelly), a lifelong nurse and educator, was born April 29, 1924, as the fourth child of her beloved parents Herman Albertis “Bert” and Theodora (Pacak) Kelly.&nbsp;

Clarice grew up in the small Kansas community of Montrose alongside her five siblings: Faye, Mildred, Irvin, Molly, and Orris.

Growing up, Clarice had a knack for excelling in whatever she set her mind to. As a student, Clarice’s teachers remembered her as one of the brightest students they ever taught. Her classmates likely agreed as Clarice, getting her start as a teacher early, was known for tutoring struggling classmates in complex science subjects – subjects that would become a lifelong passion of hers. As an athlete, Clarice was the girls singles tennis state champion three years in a row and a softball pitcher feared by other schools. A lover of music and a talented pianist, Clarice rarely had a chance to dance at school dances or parties as her classmates relied on her to play the music.

In the midst of the Second World War, Clarice graduated valedictorian of her high school class in 1942, and like many other young women, did her part supporting the war effort. She moved to Wichita, where she worked in the Beech Aircraft Factory as a secretary and joined the Beech Guardettes.

Eventually, however, Clarice, a lover of science, learning, and helping others, found herself drawn to nursing. In 1944 she moved to Topeka and was inducted into the United States Cadet Nurse Corps, serving at St. Francis Hospital. Clarice's dream of becoming a flight nurse and serving on the frontlines was dashed when she found out she was half an inch too tall.

Whatever her backup plans may have been, it didn’t matter once she met James (or “Jimmy” as she called him at the time), an airman stationed at nearby Forbes Field. It was on a blind, double date set up by her roommate Lila she met James Peteete, her future husband. Lila’s date, Rob, had gone through basic training with Jim and, after both were shot down over Europe, were prisoners of war alongside each other. These two couples, Jim and Clarice and Lila and Rob would remain lifelong friends.

In 1946, a few months short of Clarice’s graduation, Jim received new orders to report to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Despite his insistence she should graduate, that he would wait for her, Clarice did a thoroughly modern thing – she proposed to him (and likely wouldn’t have taken no for an answer). They were married in Topeka, where Clarice, ever the trailblazer, forewent a traditional wedding dress for a beautiful golden suit. Thus began their marriage of 70 years.

They had their first child, James “Kelly,” a year later in 1947. The couple would have seven more children over the years: Pat, Terry, Mike, Linda, Becky, Matt, and Sean.

Clarice and Jim chose to raise their children in her hometown of Montrose. There, Clarice was highly involved in the community, teaching music, organizing musicals, and running the local Farmer’s Co-op office. She accomplished all of this while raising a growing young family.

In 1970, the family moved to Hays because Clarice made, for the time, a brave decision – she wanted to go back to school. Clarice and Jim would remain in Hays for the rest of their lives. All while working full-time as a nurse’s assistant at a local hospital and raising young children, Clarice completed her long-delayed Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Fort Hays State University in 1972. Clarice followed her BSN up with a Master in Secondary Education degree from FHSU in 1979 and a Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Kansas in 1983.

After graduation in 1972, Clarice worked as a charge nurse at a local hospital but, more importantly, began working as a nursing instructor at FHSU, reigniting her passion for teaching. Clarice eventually became an Associate Professor at FHSU. Asked on several occasions to consider becoming the Chair of the Nursing Department, Clarice would always say no. She wanted to keep doing what she loved – working side-by-side with students.

A beloved professor, Clarice was voted FHSU’s best faculty member by the graduating class of 1977, winning the prestigious Pilot Award in gratitude for her teaching, advice, and friendship. More than mere awards, a better example of the love Clarice’s students had for her was in how often former students would come up to her whenever and wherever they saw her, even decades later, to tell her how much she meant to them as a professor.

Clarice retired from FHSU in 1990 but not from teaching. She continued as an educator by helping to create a rural nursing education outreach program. She traveled the state, giving lectures and teaching health programs to people in small, rural Kansas communities. It wasn’t until 1995, at the age of 71, Clarice finally retired.

In her retirement, Clarice put the same effort, love, and attention into her family and grandchildren. She was always quick to drop everything to dote on her grandchildren, making sure her cookie jar was always full, her schedule was free to spend hours catching up and taking them on adventures to see dinosaurs at the Sternberg or FHSU’s bison herd. She was truly the matriarch of her family and was deeply important to every one of them.

Ultimately, Clarice, a vibrant, loving person, blazed a trail for young women after her. As a “mother to everyone,” her strengths were obvious to those lucky enough to meet her. It was obvious in her supreme kindness and love for others; it was obvious from her absolute joy in seeing others succeed; it was obvious from her desire to support others through their struggles. Most of all, however, it was obvious from her willingness through each stage of her life, whether as a young woman or as a grandmother, to give her all to help others. Clarice touched many lives in this community and will be dearly missed by all who had a chance to enjoy her friendship, mentorship, and love.

Clarice is survived by one brother, Orris Kelly, and one sister, Molly McCampbell. She is also survived by seven children, Kelly, Linda, Terry, Mike, Becky, Matt, and Sean, nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 10 AM Saturday, August 14, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church - Hays, 305 West 7th Street, Hays, KS 67601.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow the services in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Republic County, KS.

 </figure>Clarice Elaine Peteete&nbsp;(Kelly), a lifelong nurse and educator, was born April 29, 1924, as the fourth child of her beloved parents Herman Albertis “Bert” and Theodora (Pacak) Kelly.&nbsp;Clarice grew up in the small Kansas community of Montrose alongside her five siblings: Faye, Mildred, Irvin, Molly, and Orris.Growing up, Clarice had a knack for excelling in whatever she set her mind to. As a student, Clarice’s teachers remembered her as one of the brightest students they ever taught. Her classmates likely agreed as Clarice, getting her start as a teacher early, was known for tutoring struggling classmates in complex science subjects – subjects that would become a lifelong passion of hers. As an athlete, Clarice was the girls singles tennis state champion three years in a row and a softball pitcher feared by other schools. A lover of music and a talented pianist, Clarice rarely had a chance to dance at school dances or parties as her classmates relied on her to play the music.In the midst of the Second World War, Clarice graduated valedictorian of her high school class in 1942, and like many other young women, did her part supporting the war effort. She moved to Wichita, where she worked in the Beech Aircraft Factory as a secretary and joined the Beech Guardettes.Eventually, however, Clarice, a lover of science, learning, and helping others, found herself drawn to nursing. In 1944 she moved to Topeka and was inducted into the United States Cadet Nurse Corps, serving at St. Francis Hospital. Clarice's dream of becoming a flight nurse and serving on the frontlines was dashed when she found out she was half an inch too tall.Whatever her backup plans may have been, it didn’t matter once she met James (or “Jimmy” as she called him at the time), an airman stationed at nearby Forbes Field. It was on a blind, double date set up by her roommate Lila she met James Peteete, her future husband. Lila’s date, Rob, had gone through basic training with Jim and, after both were shot down over Europe, were prisoners of war alongside each other. These two couples, Jim and Clarice and Lila and Rob would remain lifelong friends.In 1946, a few months short of Clarice’s graduation, Jim received new orders to report to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Despite his insistence she should graduate, that he would wait for her, Clarice did a thoroughly modern thing – she proposed to him (and likely wouldn’t have taken no for an answer). They were married in Topeka, where Clarice, ever the trailblazer, forewent a traditional wedding dress for a beautiful golden suit. Thus began their marriage of 70 years.They had their first child, James “Kelly,” a year later in 1947. The couple would have seven more children over the years: Pat, Terry, Mike, Linda, Becky, Matt, and Sean.Clarice and Jim chose to raise their children in her hometown of Montrose. There, Clarice was highly involved in the community, teaching music, organizing musicals, and running the local Farmer’s Co-op office. She accomplished all of this while raising a growing young family.In 1970, the family moved to Hays because Clarice made, for the time, a brave decision – she wanted to go back to school. Clarice and Jim would remain in Hays for the rest of their lives. All while working full-time as a nurse’s assistant at a local hospital and raising young children, Clarice completed her long-delayed Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Fort Hays State University in 1972. Clarice followed her BSN up with a Master in Secondary Education degree from FHSU in 1979 and a Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Kansas in 1983.After graduation in 1972, Clarice worked as a charge nurse at a local hospital but, more importantly, began working as a nursing instructor at FHSU, reigniting her passion for teaching. Clarice eventually became an Associate Professor at FHSU. Asked on several occasions to consider becoming the Chair of the Nursing Department, Clarice would always say no. She wanted to keep doing what she loved – working side-by-side with students.A beloved professor, Clarice was voted FHSU’s best faculty member by the graduating class of 1977, winning the prestigious Pilot Award in gratitude for her teaching, advice, and friendship. More than mere awards, a better example of the love Clarice’s students had for her was in how often former students would come up to her whenever and wherever they saw her, even decades later, to tell her how much she meant to them as a professor.Clarice retired from FHSU in 1990 but not from teaching. She continued as an educator by helping to create a rural nursing education outreach program. She traveled the state, giving lectures and teaching health programs to people in small, rural Kansas communities. It wasn’t until 1995, at the age of 71, Clarice finally retired.In her retirement, Clarice put the same effort, love, and attention into her family and grandchildren. She was always quick to drop everything to dote on her grandchildren, making sure her cookie jar was always full, her schedule was free to spend hours catching up and taking them on adventures to see dinosaurs at the Sternberg or FHSU’s bison herd. She was truly the matriarch of her family and was deeply important to every one of them.Ultimately, Clarice, a vibrant, loving person, blazed a trail for young women after her. As a “mother to everyone,” her strengths were obvious to those lucky enough to meet her. It was obvious in her supreme kindness and love for others; it was obvious from her absolute joy in seeing others succeed; it was obvious from her desire to support others through their struggles. Most of all, however, it was obvious from her willingness through each stage of her life, whether as a young woman or as a grandmother, to give her all to help others. Clarice touched many lives in this community and will be dearly missed by all who had a chance to enjoy her friendship, mentorship, and love.Clarice is survived by one brother, Orris Kelly, and one sister, Molly McCampbell. Milford Lee Kirchhoff was born on April 25, 1930, in rural Athol, Kansas
 to Lena (Kuhlmann) and Henry Kirchhoff Jr. On August 7, 2021, Milford 
made his way to his eternal home in Heaven at the age of 91 at Smith 
County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, Kansas. Milford was baptized at
 St. John Lutheran Church, Athol, on May 18, 1930 by Rev. A.C. 
Fleischmann, and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Athol, on April 
2, 1944 by Rev. F. Efken. 
 Milford grew up on the family farm and helped his parents. His 
father developed polio at a young age, so Milford had many 
responsibilities from an early age. Milford served in the Armed Forces 
during the Korean conflict from 1952 to 1954. He had many stories of 
his time stationed in Alaska.
 Milford met Marion Sasse at Luther League when her family came from 
rural Hardy, Nebraska, to visit cousins in the Athol area. Milford and 
Marion were united in marriage on September 28, 1956, at St. Paul 
Lutheran Church in rural Deshler, Nebraska, by Rev. George Obermeyer. 
Milford and Marion were blessed with one daughter, Carol.
 Milford and Marion worked side by side everyday raising their 
daughter and working on the farm. Milford loved working the land and 
was always very good at “fixing” things. Milford was very involved in 
the church at St. John Lutheran. Milford served several terms on the 
Church Council and as Sunday School Superintendent. He also helped 
Marion with the Funeral Committee for many years. 
 Milford and Marion enjoyed playing cards with their group of 
friends, who never missed a birthday, anniversary or New Year’s Eve 
together. They shared laughs and great times. The couple also made 
many friends square dancing, as they traveled Kansas and Nebraska 
following
 their favorite callers.
 Milford loved and was very proud of his grandchildren. He enjoyed 
having them help on the farm. Cory said his Grandpa could fix anything 
with what he had on the farm. Most recently, he loved being Great 
Grandpa to Sawyer, Avery, and Lola. They brought him many smiles!
 Milford was preceded in death by his wife, Marion, his parents, his 
sister, Sylvia, and brother-in-law Lawrence Sasse. Left to celebrate 
his life are: daughter, Carol Rahjes and husband Don of Kensington; 
granddaughter Kelsey (Rahjes) Levin and husband Garrett of Kensington; 
grandson Cory Rahjes and wife Audrey of Kensington; great 
granddaughters, Sawyer and Avery Levin, and Lola Rahjes of Kensington; 
three nephews, Glenn Sasse of Hardy, Nebraska; Gerald Sasse and wife 
Cindy of Deshler, Nebraska; Galen Sasse and wife Melissa of Deshler, 
Nebraska; two great nephews, Chris Sasse and wife Desiree and their 
daughter Elsie of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Matthew Sasse of Deshler,

Max Gene Vaughn, 86, of Colby, passed away August 7, 2021, at Citizens 
Medical Center, in Colby, KS. Max was born January 11, 1935, in Selden, 
KS, to Ted and Myrtle (Brown) Vaughn. 
Max spent two years in the United States Army. After that, he was 
self-employed, custom harvesting, running a dirt construction business 
and trucking. He was very creative, could fix anything and did all this 
own repairs. Max enjoyed car racing, in his younger days, as a driver, 
and later, as a spectator in the grandstands. Max was a self-taught 
musician. He particularly enjoyed the “Old Country Music.” He played 
guitar in a band, “Off Limits," and played dances and at the local 
nursing homes. Max was such a people person, and he loved his coffee. He
 could always be found at the local coffee shops entertaining others 
with his witty sense of humor. Max married Beverly Bonner on September 
6, 1984, in Hot Springs, SD. 
Max was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Dean, Donald and Clarence and sisters, Myrna, Clara and Doris. 
He is survived by his wife Bev, of Colby; daughter LaDonna (Joe) Newman,
 of Hoxie, KS; son Rick (Kathy) Vaughn, of Colby, KS; 5 grandchildren 
and 14 great-grandchildren. 
A private graveside service will take place at Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

Max Gene Vaughn

Jack Eugene Broughton, 93, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, 
August 5, 2021, at the Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge, Kansas.

Jack was born on August 29, 1927, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the son of 
Leonard Clark and Thelma Theora (Parks) Broughton. He graduated from 
Hoisington Kansas High School and later enlisted in the United States 
Navy. Jack led a long successful illustrious career in the Oil &amp; Gas
 Industry. His dedication was showcased by his myriad of roles spanning 
over 60 years. Jack was highly respected and recognized by many in his 
industry. His work took him many places throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, 
Louisiana, North Dakota, and Colorado. His responsibilities ranged from a
 driller in early years to advanced management in the later.

Nonetheless, in the twilight of his career, Jack chose to work as a 
bus driver in the Larned school system where he used his charm and humor
 to entertain the children whom he shuttled to and from school and their
 events. He was an active member of the Fort Dodge American Legion #107,
 as well as the Hoisington Masonic Lodge. He will be greatly missed by 
all who had the pleasure of experiencing his fun-loving, helpful, and 
charming personality. Jack also cherished the mountains where he often 
ventured, spending many splendorous getaways with those he loved even 
more.

On June 3, 1947, Jack married the love of his life Doris “La Dene” 
Brewer of Hoisington, Kansas and started a family that gifted them their
 seven children. Doris preceded him in death on November 4, 2007. He is 
survived by a daughter, LeeAnn Castaneda and husband Earnest, from 
Springfield, Missouri; two sons, Ron Broughton and wife, Jayne, of 
Owasso, Oklahoma and Jack “Jackie” Broughton from The Woodlands, Texas; 
17 grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren. Among other dearly 
departed family members include: two daughters, Kerri Lainge and Lisa 
Broughton, two sons Everett Broughton and Kevin Broughton, and his 
brother and two sisters: Billy Broughton, Loretta French, and Rosalie 
Renz.

A Celebration of Jack’s life will be held Friday, August 13, 2021, at
 1:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City with Rev. Shawn Fletcher 
officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Ft. 
Dodge with full Military Honors by the United States Navy and the Howard
 Gotschall VFW Post 1714. There will be no public viewing, as cremation 
has taken place. Friends and family are welcomed to sign the register 
book Thursday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel.

The family has suggested for memorials to be sent to the Ft. Dodge

Robert “Bob” Bennett, age 83, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021, 
at the Dighton Hospital in Dighton, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on December 6, 
1937, in Shallow Water, Kansas, the son of George J. Bennett and Mary 
Ellen (Fenton) Bennett.&nbsp; A resident of Healy, Kansas since 1965 moving 
from Gove County, Kansas, he was a farmer.

Bob became a member of the Lutheran Church in Scott City at the age of 14.

He attended school at Scott City. Later joining the Army and serving in the 299th Engineer Battalion.

Bob married Carole W. Brown on December 9, 1956, at the Dighton 
Methodist Church. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding 
anniversary this year.

Returning from the service he started working on the farm in Gove 
County for Joe Hanna.&nbsp; Later, Bob was employed by York Brothers of 
Healy.&nbsp; Eventually owning his own farm and raising livestock, wheat, 
milo, and alfalfa.

Survivors include Carole, wife of the home, Three Sons: Jerry 
(Connie) Bennett of Liberal, Kansas. Thomas (Karla) Bennett of Healy, 
Kansas, Arron (Jayme) Bennett of Tonganoxie, Kansas, One Daughter: DoAnn
 Cochran (Alan) of Overland Park, Kansas.&nbsp; 15 Grandchildren and 23 
Great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and all of his siblings, 
Brothers: Ralph, Harold, Jim, and Terry.&nbsp; Sisters: Joyce, Margie, Cathy,
 and Mary.

Memorial Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, 
August 14, 2021, at the Healy Cemetery in Healy, Kansas with Rev. Bud 
Tuxhorn presiding.

Cynthia C. Goding, 69, passed away August 4, 2021, at Ness County Hospital, Ness City, KS.

She was born April 4, 1952, in Worland, WY, the daughter of Eugene and
 Maxine Bunner Johnson.&nbsp; Moving to Hanston from Nebraska a year ago, she
 was a CNA.&nbsp;

She was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Moose Lodge and Eagles Club, both of Nebraska.

Survivors include: four sons, Matt (Christina) Pattison, Riverton, 
WY, Jason Martens, Fort Collins, CO, Anthony (Valarie) Martens, Hanston,
 KS, Joshua (Jacqueline) Martens, Terre Haute, IN and eighteen 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Leland and twin granddaughters, Katlynn and Kassandra.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will held at 10 a.m.

Theresa Marie (Leiker) Haselhorst, age 91, died Saturday, August 7, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center.&nbsp; She was born October 5, 1929, at Victoria, Kansas, to Pius and Anna (Sander) Leiker.&nbsp; She married Merlin F. Haselhorst on November 9, 1949, in Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on September 29, 1998.

She was a bookkeeper at Flowers By Frances, Feme’ Bridal Wear and Jay Stewart Electric, and retired in 1990.&nbsp; She grew up in Victoria and was a graduate of Victoria High School. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and camping at Cedar Buff Lake.&nbsp; She enjoyed bingo, reading, watching the Royals and the Chiefs.

Theresa was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Christian Mothers, Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, and a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary all of Hays, and she spend many hours volunteering at the Community Assistance Center in Hays.&nbsp;

Patricia Ann “Patti” Hoffman, 72, died Saturday, August 7, 2021, at St. 
Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born January 12, 
1949, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Cecil Jason &amp; Joan (Vlavin) 
Pruitt. 
 Patty moved with her family to Oklahoma when she was a child. In 
1959, they moved to Garden City and Patti has lived in Garden City since.
 She worked for more than 30 years as a dental hygienist in Garden 
City. Patty later became owner and operator of Patti’s Wine &amp; 
Spirits, LLC, and is currently a member of a new venture, Mary Street 
Ice House, LLC. 
 Patti loved to spend her time traveling and loved animals especially her dogs Gracie and Rockie. 
 Survivors include many cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Bonnie Lea Calihan. 
 Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 12, 
2021, at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev. Warren Stecklein 
officiating. The service may also be viewed on Facebook Live on the

Thelma Pauline Hutchinson, 84, of Great Bend, Kansas, and former 
Russell and Paradise, Kansas, resident, died on Friday, August 06, 2021,
 at the Azria Health Care Center in Great Bend, Kansas.

Thelma was born on December 26, 1936, in Wichita, Kansas, the 
daughter of Lester R. and Helen Maude (Dodson) Pfortmiller.&nbsp; She was 
raised by her grandparents Henry and Anna Pfortmiller and grew up and 
attended school in rural Paradise, Kansas, and lived in the Russell, 
Osborne and Barton County, Kansas areas most all her life. &nbsp;She was 
married to Tom Hutchinson on January 25, 1954 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; From 
this union Thelma and Tom were blessed with 3 children Sheryl, Randy and
 Bruce.&nbsp; She was a hard-working wife and mother who enjoyed taking care 
of her husband and children. &nbsp;She worked as a certified nurse’s 
assistant and physical therapy aid at the Russell Regional Hospital from
 1980 to 1995.&nbsp; She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in
 Russell and Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; She was 
also a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, KOOD, ROAR and Palco Art 
Club.&nbsp; She enjoyed being a talented artist creating beautiful oil and 
water color paintings and wood carvings.&nbsp; She enjoyed listening to music
 and watching football on television.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending 
time with her family and close friends.

Surviving family include her daughter Sheryl Corn and husband Steve 
of Great Bend, Kansas, sons Randy Hutchinson and wife Stephanie of 
Falun, Kansas and Bruce Hutchinson of Hoisington, Kansas; sisters Sue 
Koehler and husband Dan of Lawrence, Kansas and Loa Gordon of Auburn, 
Kansas; 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great-great 
grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lester Pfortmiller and Helen
 Burger and grandparents Henry and Anna Pfortmiller; sister Alice Wiggs 
and one great grandchild Fayelle Hutchinson. A celebration of Thelma’s 
life will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, August 13, 2021, at the

1947, in Healy, Kansas, the son of Raymond Jacob and Margaret Jean West 
Appel.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he was a carpenter 
and was the past owner and operator of the Pool Hall in Scott City, 
Kansas.

James was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Scott City, 
Kansas, and was a US Army Veteran serving from 1968 to 1969.&nbsp; He was 
also a member of the VFW.

On May 29, 2016, he married Jo De Rowe in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives.

Survivors include his Wife - Jo De Appel of Scott City, Kansas, One 
Daughter - Meagan J. &amp; Corey Cramer of Manhattan, Kansas, One 
Brother - Terrance &amp; Karen Appel of Scott City, Kansas, One Sister -

 Center surrounded by his family.He is survived by his wife, Alice; four children: Luke (Kerry), 
Joshua (Lacy), Shelley (Jason), and Rex (Sadee); nine grandchildren: 
Chase, Dalton, Dakota, Kassidy (Aaron), Caitlyn, Brianna, Keirstyn, 
Colt, and Owen; two great granddaughters: Everleigh and Kendyl. A 
Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at 
Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from
 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday, August 9, 2021, at the mortuary with the 
family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp; A Memorial has
 been established with Wounded Warrior Project.&nbsp; Contributions and 
condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who are in 
charge of these arrangements.
