Wilmer Kellogg, 89, Hays, Kansas, died Friday, September 24, 2021, at his home.
He was born January 8, 1932, in Palco, Kansas the son of Charles and Hattie (Beougher) Kellogg. In 1950, he graduated from Salina High School. He was a Korean War Navy Veteran. He was The Civilian Manager of the Officer’s Club at Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, Kansas for eleven years and the Club was rated first place in Strategic Air Command and first in the Air Force in 1961. After the base closed, he managed the Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays, Kansas for 11 years. He started the Taco Shop in 1970 and sold it 31 years later. He also started Captain Kidd Fish and Chips and Daisy Mae’s Tavern, and purchased Ellis Rendering Co. and ran it for six years before selling it. During this time, he started and managed Kellogg Rentals. Wilmer served on the FHSU Endowment Association Board, the Good Samaritan Board of Directors, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on several of its committees. He was a life member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, the Ellis County Historical Society, and the Society of Historic Fort Hays. He served six years on the Colt Collectors Association Board of Directors. He started the Elizabeth Colt Legacy Foundation Board of Directors. (Their purpose was to help fund the youth shooting teams across America.) He was also a member of the Texas Gun Collectors and the Colorado Gun Collectors Associations. Wilmer married Lorena (Mendenhall) Deighton on August 16, 1965.
Survivors include his wife: Lorena of Hays, a step-son: Brad Deighton (Carroll) of Dallas, TX; two sons: Lonnie Kellogg (Jennifer) of Hays and Larry Kellogg of Salina; a daughter: Cathy Scherven (Don), Randy Duke (Tami) of Minnesota, grandchildren: Jason Duke (Jonna), Josh Duke (Tina), Lindsey Duke, Suzanne Kellogg (Jake), Marissa Scherven, and Madeline Scherven, all of Minnesota, and great-grandchildren: Lane, Ava Belle, Alexis, Zofie, August, Stella, Juniper, Sage, and Wilmer Duke, all of Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Charles and Hattie Kellogg, a sister: Eva Marie (Kellogg) Will (Karl), a brother: Charles Kellogg (Edna), and a grandson: Donald Eugene Kellogg.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church, Hays, Kansas. Private family burial will be in Mt. Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time on Tuesday in the church parlor.
