Maria C. Arias, 73, passed away September 17, 2021, at the University
 of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She was born on December 
15, 1947, at Francisco I. Madero, Zacatecas, Mexico, to Pedro Ibarra and
 Maria Chayres. &nbsp;

A Great Bend resident since 1992, Maria was a homemaker. She was a 
member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. 
She especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband, Rafael Arias of the home; her sons, 
Martin, Gerardo and Francisco; her daughters, Maribel, Araceli, Rafaela,
 Luz Maria and Adriana; and many brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, 
September 20, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil service at 7:00 
p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, 
September 21, 2021, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, 
with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will be in the 
Great Bend Cemetery North. Memorials have been designated to Prince of 
Peace Parish, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Robert L. “Bob” Myers, 79, died September 16, 2021, at Ellinwood 
District Hospital.&nbsp; He was born May 1, 1942, in Belleville, Kansas.&nbsp; 
&nbsp;Bob graduated from Otis High School in 1960 and later received his 
bachelor degree from Kansas State University.

On March 19, 1990, he married Gloria Deines in La Crosse, Kansas.

Bob was a teacher and a coach in Bird City for many years. He also 
enjoyed coaching basketball and football and even taught drivers 
education.&nbsp; Bob and Gloria moved to Ellinwood after his retirement in 
2000, where he continued to substitute teach for schools in the 
surrounding area. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed 
cheering on his grandchildren in all their different sporting events.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years Gloria Myers of the home; and 
two daughters, Andrea Ingram and husband Jason of Hoisington, and Amy 
Preister and husband Steve of Andale; nine grandchildren, TiJay Unruh of
 Overland Park, Aurora Ingram of Wichita, Braedon Willesden of Salina, 
Shawn Ingram, Emma Willesden, and Marcus Ingram, all of Hoisington, Eva 
and Brenna Preister of Andale, and Ben Hull of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry P. and Emma L. (Ondrack) Schlegel and a sister Doris Bakken.

Visitation will be Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at 
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Galatia, with Rev. Wayne Baldyga presiding. 
Family will greet friends prior to service from 1-2 p.m. at the church.

Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia, at a later date.

Robert L. 'Bob' Myers

Carolyn Ann Wilkerson passed away on September 13, 2021, at the Rooks 
County Health Center in Plainville, KS, at the age of 73. She was born 
on May 23, 1948, to Victor and Henneritta (Befort) Younger in Hays, KS. 
She was married to Gary Wilkerson on February 27, 1971, in Ellis Co. 
They were blessed with two sons: Eric and Wesley.
 Carolyn grew up on a farm in rural Ellis Co. and graduated from 
Ellis High School with the Class of 1966. After high school she went 
straight into the workforce. In 1995 she and Gary began C &amp; G 
Trucking Company which they owned and operated in Zurich, KS. Carolyn 
continued to run the business after Gary’s passing in 2005. Her own 
health made her slow down working up until her passing. 
 Carolyn loved tending to her flower garden, knitting, and 
crocheting. She loved watching NFL &amp; College Football and NCAA 
Basketball and it did not make a difference if it was live or 
pre-recorded, she still loved watching the games. She always attended 
her grandkids sporting events from the time they played t-ball all the 
way thru high school sports. She enjoyed going to all of Gary and Eric’s
 drag racing events, as well as her grandkids’ junior dragster events. 
As their #1 Fan, you could always hear her from the stands cheering them
 on. They all made her so very proud. 
 Carolyn was a hardworking and fun-loving woman. She knew how to have
 fun and enjoy life along the way. She will be greatly missed by all who
 knew her, but the celebration of her life and memories will never be 
forgotten. A true fan, she continues to cheer us on to greatness in this
 life, until we see her again, in the life everlasting.
 Carolyn is survived by her son Eric Wilkerson of Zurich, KS; 
sisters, Bernie Miller of Hays, KS, Linda Engel of Hays, KS, and Jane 
Wiggins of Russell, KS; sister-in-law, Becky Younger of Salina, KS; and 
two grandchildren, Willie and Reagan Wilkerson.

Sarah Jean Kemp, 28, passed away September 16, 2021, in Larned.

She was born December 12, 1992, in Hoisington, the daughter of William
 Jackson Crawford and Christina Love Champ.&nbsp; A longtime area resident, 
she was a CNA at Diversicare of Larned.

She enjoyed riding horses, fishing, camping, shooting and traveling to Colorado.

On June 6, 2015, she married Dustin Edward Kemp in Manhattan, KS.&nbsp; He survives.

Other survivors include: four children, Johnathon Kemp, Kelli Kemp, 
Chloe Crawford-Henkle, Conor Crawford-Henkle, all of the home; father, 
Bill (Megan) Crawford, Lyons; mother, Christina Champ, Hoisington; 
father-in-law, Kelly (Tamera) Kemp, Manhattan; mother-in-law, Beth 
(Wayne) Morgan, Nekoma; four brothers, Joshua, Stephen, Shane, Dakota; 
two sisters, Kinsley, Allison and a great grandfather, Carl Henkle, 
Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by her great grandmother, Mary Henkle and a grandmother, Doris Clark.

Patricia Louis Turpin Hesher, 93, was born to Harold Thomas Turpin and Phyliss Artilee Bement Turpin on July 15th, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri. Patti passed away on September 17, 2021 in Larned.

Patti and Wayne Hesher met in Kansas City at a hospital while he was 
recovering from an operation.&nbsp; Patti arranged to deliver meals to him 
while he was recuperating. The two were united in marriage on April 20th,
 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri. Patti and Wayne's union produced 4 
surviving children. Ed of Amarillo, Texas. Tom of Larned, Kansas, Sandy 
(Gary) Chelcun of Estes Park, Colorado and Mike, Estes Park, Colorado. 
One granddaughter Talisha (Tyler) Dennison of Wellsville, Kansas. One 
great granddaughter, Rose and numerous nieces and nephews. Patti was 
preceded in death by Wayne on November 28th, 2014, her parents, brother Richard Turpin and a sister, Eleanor Arnold.

Patti graduated from Saint Luke's Nursing school in KCMO before 
becoming a psychiatric aid instructor at Larned State Hospital for many 
years. With sports-oriented parents, Patti was a fan of the Kansas City 
Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and Kansas Jayhawks. Patti and Wayne enjoyed 
time at their summer cabin in Estes Park, Colorado and after retirement 
spent many winters in Arizona and Texas. Patti also loved to tend to her
 rose garden, read and bake chip chocolate cookies.

Cremation has taken place and no service is planned at this time.&nbsp;

Marj Dusay, actress, mother, grande dame of life and homegrown 
daughter of Russell, Kansas, died peacefully of natural causes on January
 28, 2020 at her home in New York City. She was 83.

Ms. Dusay, known for her sharp wit, sophistication, and beauty, had a
 long career in the public eye that began with modeling work in her 
native Kansas. Eventually her innate elegance and smile propelled her 
into the pages and onto the covers of magazines in New York, San 
Francisco, and Los Angeles, where she moved upon discovering her love of
 performance.&nbsp; She went on to a long and successful career as an 
actress.&nbsp; From the 60’s television programs, “Star Trek”, “Bonanza”, 
“The Wild, Wild West,” “Get Smart,” and “Hogan’s Heroes” thru the 80’s 
and 90’s Marj performed on many of the best shows on television.&nbsp; Among 
others, shows like “Mannix,” “The FBI,” “Barnaby Jones,” “Fresh Prince 
of Bel Air,” and “The Odd Couple”. &nbsp;Marj was a series regular on “Bret 
Maverick” with James Garner. She recurred for six seasons on “The Facts 
of Life” as Blair’s mother, Monica Warner, which garnered her two Emmy 
nominations.&nbsp; It was during her last two years on that show that she 
simultaneously began working in daytime television on the soap opera 
“Capitol.” &nbsp;When daytime television discovered her it provided a 
template for 25 years of future roles as glamorous, ambitious, and 
sometimes treacherous divas on several long-running soaps: “Santa 
Barbara,” “All My Children,” and “Guiding Light.”

Marj Dusay was born Marjorie Ellen Mahoney on February 20, 1936, in 
Hays, Kansas, and was raised in Russell, Kansas. &nbsp;She had a wonderful 
childhood with her brothers and sisters and was a gifted equestrian 
spending many hours riding and training the family’s horses. &nbsp;In high 
school she excelled in debate and sports; at the University of Kansas 
she performed in plays and was named Homecoming Queen.

In 1956, she married her high school sweetheart, John Dusay (also from
 Russell).&nbsp; The couple first lived in New York then settled in San 
Francisco. When they divorced in 1965, Marj relocated with their 
children, Debra and Randall, to Los Angeles. &nbsp;She later married Thomas 
Perine in 1972 and they remained married until Mr. Perine’s death in 
1987.

Ms. Dusay moved to New York City in 1993 to assume a role on a 
television series and remained living there until her death. &nbsp;She was 
predeceased by her son, Randall; her parent’s, Joseph and Marie Mahoney;
 and her brothers John and Joseph Mahoney. &nbsp;Her sister, Mary Ann Mahoney
 followed her in passing on February 17, 2020, (just 19 days later – they
 were that close).&nbsp; She is survived by her daughter, Debra Dusay 
Blocker; her son-in-law, David Blocker; her granddaughter, Deena 
Blocker; and her siblings, Kathleen Dunn, and Timothy Mahoney, along 
with numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all and was 
loved by everyone.

Marj was blessed with an abundance of talent, wit and humor, all the 
while retaining her down-home roots as a wise and kind woman, loving and
 dedicated mother and friend. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 
AM, Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in

Mary Ann Mahoney of Arvada, Colorado, passed away peacefully at home 
surrounded by family and friends on February 17, 2020, from lung disease.
 She taught physical education and coached at Westminster High School, 
retiring in 1985.

Mary Ann was born in Hays, Kansas, to Joseph Martin Mahoney and Marie 
Cecelia Antoinette Pivonka on July 25, 1932. She graduated from high 
school in Russell, Kansas and received her BS from the University of 
Kansas in 1954 and her MS from the University of Colorado in 1970.

A trailblazer in girls interscholastic sports, Mary Ann received The 
Sportswomen of Colorado Dorothy Mauk Pioneer award in 1984. She was a 
USA Gymnastics Brevet Judge and was inducted into the Colorado USA 
Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997. She was delegation leader for the USA 
in World and Olympic competitions and she served as Regional 
Administrative Chair and went on to serve as National Administrative 
Chair for the Junior Olympic Program. In 1996 she helped direct the John
 Hancock Tour of World Gymnastics Champions during its 34-city tour. In 
2010, she was honored for her 35 years of service by the National 
Association of Women’s Gymnastics Judges.&nbsp;

Mary Ann loved World War II history, classic movies and old TV shows 
such as Castle and Murder She Wrote. Saving many family heirlooms, she 
rescued and restored them to their original glory. When she saw a need 
for floor exercise mats and bar protectors, she started her own company 
to provide them to the growing gymnastics community. She had a great 
laugh and loved hearing and telling a good clean joke, Irish or not! She
 attended all the summer Olympics games since the 1968 games in Mexico. 
She enjoyed travel in Europe and was especially fond of Ireland. She was
 a devoted sister, aunt, friend and teacher.

Mary Ann is survived by her sister Kathy Dunn of Stillwater, Oklahoma
 and a brother, Tim (Joyce) Mahoney of Wichita, Kansas, as well as many 
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Joey and 
John and her sister Marj Dusay (by only nineteen days) and nephews 
Randall Dusay and Stanley Tenan. Mary Ann was a member of The Shrine of 
St Anne Catholic Parish.

Howard Duane “Sparky” Sparks, 81, of Quinter, Kansas, passed away 
September 15, 2021. Duane was born in Bigelow, Kansas, January 9, 1940. 
He liked to point out that being born in 1940 told you his birthday, 
1/9/40. When Duane earned his GED at Fort Hays State University, he 
scored so well that they were disappointed they could not convince him 
to enroll in college courses.&nbsp;

Duane married Marjorie Ann Fast at the United Methodist Church in 
Hays, Kansas, on April 22, 1967. They were married 54 years. During his 
lifetime, Duane worked a wide variety of jobs, doing whatever needed to 
be done; from waiting tables or cooking to construction, going from his 
eighteen years with the Union Pacific railroad, to owning his own 
businesses - a windshield repair franchise, a car wash and his dream 
job, owning a restaurant.

While his hobbies seemed to include revisions to the house on 
Garfield Street, he loved fishing, camping, cooking, bowling, and 
playing Scat with his family and friends. He was always up for a hot cup
 of black coffee or a good meal. His quick wit and winning smile helped 
him meet some pretty interesting people, including Bob Hope, Bill Cosby,
 Dwight &amp; Mamie Eisenhower, Robert Pope, and several famous singers.
 Duane has spent a day at Jimmy Dean’s house, taken a drive in Al 
Capone’s car, and chatted with the infamous killers of the Clutter 
family near Holcomb, Kansas. In the two times he waited on Johnny Carson
 at the Wyrum Motel in Kansas City, he made such an impression that 
Johnny mentioned his friend, Sparky, on the Late Show. It’s no wonder he
 always had a story to tell!

Duane is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his siblings Elaine 
Bumgardner of Udall, Kansas; Larry Sparks and wife, Barbara of 
Milwaukie, Oregon; Doug Flin and wife, Judy, of Denver, Colorado; Bonnie
 Beckman of Marysville, Kansas; Ronald Sparks and wife, Deb, of 
Marquette, Kansas; his children Howard Eugene Eng of Sioux City, Iowa; 
Scott Sparks of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Angie Mae Sparks and Jesse York 
of Atlantic Beach, North Carolina; Ericka Cole and husband, Dan, of 
Lawrence, Kansas; Jesica Sparks and Kelvin Brown, of Mead, Colorado; 
Shayna Young and husband, Rob, of Greensburg, Kansas; and Hugh Sparks of
 Oktaha, Oklahoma; fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. 
Duane was preceded in death by his father, Howard Chester Sparks; 
mother, Wilma Edra McDonald Sparks; stepmother Agatha Mae Sparks; and 
younger brother Riley Gene Sparks.

Howard Duane 'Sparky' Sparks

Raymond Stanley Mayers was born August 23, 1918, to John and Maudie 
(Foster) Mayers in rural Clifton, Kansas, the fourth of their five&nbsp;sons.
 &nbsp;He departed this life on September 14, 2021, in Osborne, Kansas, at 
the age of 103.

The family moved to a farm southeast of Osborne in 1927 and Raymond 
attended Mount Hope, a one-room schoolhouse, through eighth grade and 
graduated from Osborne High School in 1935 at the age of sixteen. &nbsp;After
 graduation, Raymond expanded the farming and livestock operation and 
continued to spend his remaining 94 years on the family farm.

He was united in marriage to Laurine Krier on May 24, 1949, and seven
 children were born to this union including&nbsp;one son Joseph who died at 
birth (1957). &nbsp;Raymond was blessed with 19 grandchildren and 39 
great-grandchildren.

As a young man, two of Raymond's brothers were drafted into the 
service which shifted many farm responsibilities to him such as teaming 
up the horses to work the fields, milking cows, feeding livestock, 
harvesting crops, cutting wood, and whatever else needed to be done.

Raymond entertained his family and friends with numerous memories of 
growing up on the farm, experiencing the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the
 Dirty Thirties, grasshopper invasions, the introduction of using 
tractors for farmwork, purchase of the family's first vehicle, the 
installation of electricity on the farm, the Bombing of Pearl Harbor, WW
 II, JFK assassination, and the first man stepping on the moon.

Raymond recalled that during his childhood years his mother played 
the organ for barn dances on the farm. &nbsp;Dancing remained a leisure 
activity and five years ago the granddaughters were honored to dance 
with him at his grandson's wedding dance. &nbsp;He enjoyed playing cards, 
fishing, hunting, and going for drives to view his crops while sharing 
stories about people who lived on the homesteads over the last few 
generations. &nbsp;A well-known trademark of Raymond was him still having his
 thick head of black hair.

Raymond was a member of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church in Osborne and was a Charter member of the Knights of Columbus.

Raymond is survived by his six children: Cynthia (Larry) Kendig, 
Darlene (Craig) Hadley, Shirley (Kent) Thompson, and Lisa (Doyle) 
Spears, all of Osborne; and Deanna (Rick) Smith, and Stan (Pam) Mayers 
both of Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;Grandchildren are Carrie (Thompson) Rottinghaus, 
Brian Hadley, Laurie (Kendig) Pitman, Jill (Hadley) Guajardo, Lance 
Kendig, Ryan Smith, Jacqueline (Thompson) Remus, Brett Kendig, Scott 
Thompson, Derek Spears, Holly (Smith) Cook, Dustin Spears, Renee 
(Thompson) Harrell, Andrew Smith, Jenna (Mayers) Meyer, Tana (Spears) 
Fuentes, Jason Mayers, Dylan Spears, and Jared Mayers. &nbsp;He is also 
survived by 39 great-grandchildren. &nbsp;Raymond was predeceased by his 
parents, his wife, his infant son, and four brothers Cecil, Marvin, 
Walter, and Virgil.

Margaret “Maggie” Lucille Hester, 68, passed away September 15, 2021,
 at the University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She was 
born on February 1, 1953, at Great Bend, to John &amp; Lucille 
(Gutierrez) Zero. She married David Hester, Sr. on May 13, 1973, at 
Galatia.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Margaret worked for many years at 
Casey’s and Arby’s. She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. 
Margaret enjoyed rose gardening and going to the casino. She loved 
taking care of her beloved cockatoo and chihuahua.

Survivors include, her husband, David Hester, Sr. of the home; a son,
 David Hester, Jr. of Great Bend; a brother, Daniel Scott and wife 
Margaret of Great Bend; two sisters, Laura Fuzzell and husband David of 
Great Bend, and Johnnie Francis and husband Rick of Manhattan; many 
close nieces and nephews; and many children and grandchildren of the 
heart. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Michael Paul
 Hester.

Catharine, the son of Albert A. and Wilhelmina (Kinderknecht) Schmidt.&nbsp; 
He graduated from Hays High School in 1950 and was a veteran, serving in
 the U.S. Army from 1952-1956.&nbsp; On November 16, 1957' he was united in 
marriage to JoAnn M. Berens and they celebrated over 63 years of 
marriage before she preceded him in death on July 19, 2021.&nbsp; Joe was a 
truck driver, hauling crude oil for H.M. Pope, Permian, and Ashland, and
 he was also a farmer and cattleman.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Catherine 
Catholic Church, the Hays American Legion, and he loved working, family 
get-togethers, Labor Day parties, watching softball and volleyball, and 
spending time with his grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include four sons:&nbsp; Steve 
Schmidt and wife Jean of Hays, Stan Schmidt and wife Teri of Overland 
Park, Scott Schmidt and wife Lori of Hays, and Stuart Schmidt and wife 
Barbara of Olathe, three daughters:&nbsp; Stephanie Staab and husband Dale 
and Sonya Haselhorst and husband Glenn, all of Hays, and Sandi Schmidt 
of Olathe, a brother:&nbsp; Bill Schmidt and wife Delores of Westminster, CO,
 a sister:&nbsp; Gladys Jacobs of Kansas City, sixteen grandchildren:&nbsp; 
Leighton Schmidt and wife Jordan of Olathe, Devin Schmidt and fiancé Mia
 Jacobs of Dayton, OH, Craig Schmidt and wife Kelly of Shawnee, Casey

 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home

Linda L. Stecklein, 70, Olathe, died Thursday, September 16, 2021, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

She was born June 8, 1951, in Hays, the 
daughter of Alfred “Fritz” and Lyola (Zimmerman) Stecklein.&nbsp; On 
September 4, 1971 she was united in marriage to Ronald “Ron” Stecklein 
at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays.&nbsp; They celebrated 47
 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on July 11, 2019.&nbsp; 
She enjoyed listening to music, doing arts and crafts, shopping, and 
spending time with her family.

Survivors include four sons: Ronald 
“Ronnie” Stecklein, Jr. and Melanie Rohe of Clay Center, Kelly Stecklein
 and wife Karmen of Russell, Mike Stecklein and wife Michelle of Olathe,

Linda L. Stecklein

Edmond, KS resident Ruby I. Riemann passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at the Logan Manor in Logan, KS at the age of 88.

She was born January 25, 1933, in Graham Co., KS about 8 miles south of Lenora, the daughter of Ivan and Vera (Hodge) Jones.&nbsp; She began her education in a country school in September 1938 in Goshen School District and then they moved to a farm 4 miles west of Lenora and went to a country school there until the sixth grade when they moved to a farm ½ mile west of Lenora.&nbsp; Ruby finished grade school and went to Lenora High School where she graduated with the class of 1950.&nbsp; She then attended Central College in McPherson, KS for two years and received her teaching certificate in the spring of 1952.&nbsp;

Ruby taught grade school in Edmond for a year, then moved to the country school near Goshen where she taught for 9 years beginning in the fall of 1953 until spring of 1962.&nbsp; She returned to Edmond in 1962 and taught until spring of 1966.

In September 1952, Ruby had her first date with Kenneth Riemann.&nbsp; The couple were engaged on August 11, 1956 and married May 11, 1961 in Logan, KS.&nbsp; To this union their daughter Debra was born.&nbsp; Ruby became a loving wife, mother, and homemaker.&nbsp; Ruby stayed at home to raise their daughter and to help on the farm.&nbsp; Ruby was the truck driver while harvesting the wheat, corn, and milo.&nbsp; She always helped with sorting and moving the cattle and ran many errands, like going for parts and grocery shopping.

Ruby always said the wife never retired, but the couple did rent the farm out in February 2010 and continued to live on the farm, in the house they built together.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ivan and Vera and her siblings: Valera, Dean, Wayne, and Carl Jones.

Survivors include her husband Kenneth of Edmond, KS; daughter Debra Maikell and husband Stephen of Falcon, CO; three grandchildren: Captain Megan Maikell of Albuquerque, NM, Marissa Maikell of Colorado Springs, CO, and Ryan Maikell of Colorado; a brother Glenn Jones and wife Lee of Lenora, KS, and four sisters: Valeta Poage and husband Bill of Colorado Springs, CO, Marilyn Hadley of Almena, KS, June Stockman and husband Keith of Colorado Springs, CO, and Joyce Hodges and husband Terry Smith of Colorado Springs, CO.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 20th&nbsp;at the Logan Christian Church, Logan, KS, with Pastor Troy Buss officiating.&nbsp; The services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Densmore, KS.

Jon Carlos “Los” Nevins, age 50, of Overland Park, Kansas, died Sunday, 
September 12, 2021, the result of a car accident near Junction City, 
Kansas. From his birth in Hill City, Kansas November 4, 1970, to his 
death Sunday, Carlos had a caring heart and offered a ton of love, 
support, and big hugs to his family and his closest friends. 
 J. Carlos was born at Graham County Hospital in Hill 
City, Kansas to Leroy and Joetta Nevins and was one of four children. He
 spent much of his childhood working with his father, Leroy, on the 
family farm. He graduated from Hill City High School and was a Ringneck 
star athlete with many athletic achievements in several sports. His hard
 work and dedication enabled him to play football for Butler County 
Community College, El Dorado and Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, 
and after college played football overseas in Taiwan for the Taipei 
Dragons. After his football career, Los moved to Overland Park, Kansas, 
where he was able to establish a business and build a vast network of 
friends in the community.
 He will be remembered for many wonderful reasons, especially his 
love for muscle cars. Many people will remember the love he shared with 
his mother, Joetta, and for the Dallas Cowboys. He was loved dearly by 
his family and friends and will be greatly missed. 
 J. Carlos was the baby brother to his siblings and is survived by 
his brother, Eric Nevins of Hill City; his sisters: Rhea Darnell of Hill
 City, and Janille Edwards of Salina; and two half-sisters Roberta Yates
 of Ohio and Joyce Harris of Los Vegas. He was also a wonderful uncle 
and is survived by his nephews, nieces, grand nieces, and grand nephews,
 as well as aunts and cousins. 
 He is preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Joetta, half-brother Melvin Nevins, paternal and maternal grandparents. 
 Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2021, at 3:00
 p.m. in the Hill City High School Auditorium, 1 Ringneck Dr, Hill City.

Jon Carlos 'Los' Nevins

Robert "Bob" Dean Hirsch. Sr (Pup) passed away September 13th, 2021, at 
Amberwell Hiawatha, Hiawatha KS. He was born February 8, 1932, in 
Fairbury, NE, the second son to Alvin Carl and Veda Mae Hirsch. The 
family moved to Powhattan when he was 8 years old where Bob attended 
Powhattan Grade School and graduated in 1950 from Powhattan High School.


Bob had a football scholarship to play at Kansas State University, but 
due to an injury he lost his scholarship. He joined the Kansas Army 
National Guard in 1949 and served over 30 years with 154th FA BN &amp; 
2nd BN 130TH FA, retiring with a rank of CSM and 10 years in the Retired
 Reserves. He was mobilized in 1968 with the 69th Bde to Fort Carson Co 
where he volunteered to serve in Vietnam. He was inducted into the 
Ancient Order of Saint Barbara of the Field Artillery. On December 
6th, 1953, he married the love of his life, Barbara Harvey, to this union
 were 6 children. They spent the majority of their lives in Powhattan 
KS, where he worked many years for Bartley Grain Elevator, Brown County 
Coop, and later the Robinson Coop. He was very active and dedicated to 
his church, community and country. He was a lifelong member of Powhattan
 United Methodist Church and longtime Powhattan School Board member, 
where he served as president for many years. He was a member of Hiawatha
 Elks Lodge 1741 and later Atchison Elks Lodge 647. where he served many
 years on the Kansas Elks KETCH board, was District Deputy for the 
National Grand Lodge of the Elks and coordinated many hoop shoots. He 
was a member of Hiawatha Masonic Lodge #35, Abdallah Shrine of Kansas 
City Kansas, Life time member of the Powhattan American Legion Wenger 
Post 373. Life time member of Sabetha VFW Post 7285. In his later years 
he got involved with making Sleeping Mats for homeless vets. He 
continued this until his hands wouldn’t let him due to arthritis. Bob
 is survived by his wife, Barbara, Daughter in Law Susan Hirsch 
Netawaka, Peggy (Rick) Hutchison Wakarusa KS, Fred (Joan) Abilene KS, 
Terry (Jean) Hiawatha KS, and Ron, Sabetha KS. His Brothers, Leroy 
(Sylvia) Mesa, AZ, Larry (Bernita) Syracuse, KS and Rose Ann (Gene)

 </figure>Robert "Bob" Dean Hirsch. Sr (Pup) passed away September 13th, 2021, at 
Amberwell Hiawatha, Hiawatha KS. He was born February 8, 1932, in 
Fairbury, NE, the second son to Alvin Carl and Veda Mae Hirsch. The 
family moved to Powhattan when he was 8 years old where Bob attended 
Powhattan Grade School and graduated in 1950 from Powhattan High School.
 Bob had a football scholarship to play at Kansas State University, but 
due to an injury he lost his scholarship. He joined the Kansas Army 
National Guard in 1949 and served over 30 years with 154th FA BN &amp; 
2nd BN 130TH FA, retiring with a rank of CSM and 10 years in the Retired
 Reserves. He was mobilized in 1968 with the 69th Bde to Fort Carson Co 
where he volunteered to serve in Vietnam. He was inducted into the 
Ancient Order of Saint Barbara of the Field Artillery. On December 
6th, 1953, he married the love of his life, Barbara Harvey, to this union
 were 6 children. They spent the majority of their lives in Powhattan 
KS, where he worked many years for Bartley Grain Elevator, Brown County 
Coop, and later the Robinson Coop. He was very active and dedicated to 
his church, community and country. He was a lifelong member of Powhattan
 United Methodist Church and longtime Powhattan School Board member, 
where he served as president for many years. He was a member of Hiawatha
 Elks Lodge 1741 and later Atchison Elks Lodge 647. where he served many
 years on the Kansas Elks KETCH board, was District Deputy for the 
National Grand Lodge of the Elks and coordinated many hoop shoots. He 
was a member of Hiawatha Masonic Lodge #35, Abdallah Shrine of Kansas 
City Kansas, Life time member of the Powhattan American Legion Wenger 
Post 373. Life time member of Sabetha VFW Post 7285. In his later years 
he got involved with making Sleeping Mats for homeless vets. He 
continued this until his hands wouldn’t let him due to arthritis. Bob
 is survived by his wife, Barbara, Daughter in Law Susan Hirsch 
Netawaka, Peggy (Rick) Hutchison Wakarusa KS, Fred (Joan) Abilene KS, 
Terry (Jean) Hiawatha KS, and Ron, Sabetha KS. His Brothers, Leroy 
(Sylvia) Mesa, AZ, Larry (Bernita) Syracuse, KS and Rose Ann (Gene) 
Odermatt, Topeka KS, Sisters in Laws Virginia Lee Hirsch Lorton VA, Mary

Robert 'Bob' Dean Hirsch. Sr (Pup) 

Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Young, 97, went home to be with her Lord and 
Savior on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at Homestead of Auburn, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Betty, as she was known to everyone, was born May 5, 1924, in White City, 
Kansas to Lester and Mildred Dean. She was the second child to this 
union as her brother Robert was born two years earlier.&nbsp; In 1936, her 
parents moved the family to Russell, KS when her father Lester took a 
job driving trucks for R. C. Williams Trucking.

On September 6,1942, she married the man of her dreams, Lawrence 
Edward Young, of Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; This marriage of 70 years produced 
three sons Robert Kent Young of Shawnee, KS, Alan Kurt (Pamela) Young of
 Topeka. KS and Stephen Kyle Young of Arivaca, AZ.

Betty was blessed with five grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and fourteen great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester (1979) and Mildred 
(1956), her loving husband Lawrence (2012), her brother Robert (1995), 
and daughter-in-law Kathleen I. Young (2019) who was married to her son 
Kent.

Lawrence and Betty left Russell and moved to Topeka in 2011 to live 
with their son Kurt and his wife Pamela.&nbsp; After Lawrence’s death in 2012
 Betty eventually became a resident at an assisted living facility in 
Auburn, KS where she was living when she passed.

Betty (and Lawrence) were founding charter members of the Bible 
Baptist Church in Russell, KS in 1950 and her funeral services will be 
held there in honor of her many years of service to friends and family 
through the ministry of that church.&nbsp; In the many years they were 
members of this church, there was seldom a meal served at the church that
 Betty was not involved in some manner.&nbsp; 

She touched many hearts and 
lives in the 60 plus years they attended there, and it is only fitting 
her funeral services will be held there at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, 
September 20. 2021.&nbsp; Visitation will be the day of the funeral service 
from Noon to 1:00 P.M. at the Bible Baptist Church in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, KS is in charge of the 
funeral service arrangements.&nbsp;

Mary V. Craig, 97, of Russell, Kansas, died on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at the Main Street Manor in Russell, Kansas.

Mary was born on July 5, 1924, in Shattuck, Oklahoma, the daughter of Jacob and Lydia (Kraft) Long.&nbsp; She grew up in Ransom, Kansas, and graduated from Ransom High School and received education degrees from Kansas State University and Ft. Hays State University where she received her master’s degree.&nbsp; She was an elementary school teacher and worked as a teacher for USD #407 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; She was united in marriage to Robert L. Craig until his passing in 1995 and was also married to David Goodyear until his passing in 2011.

Surviving family include her son Robert M. Craig of Russell, Kansas, and her sister Lil Skinner.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.&nbsp; Cremation has been selected by the family.&nbsp; Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Sister Anita Schugart, 87, died September 14, 2021, in the Dominican 
Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend. She was born December 22, 1933, 
in Olmitz, KS, the daughter of Fred and Velma (Hlavaty) Schugart.

She entered the Dominican Sisters Community in 1954 and pronounced 
vows in 1957. Sister Anita ministered as an educator for several years 
and then as hospital administrator at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden 
City for nearly twenty years. She then studied natural healing and 
established the Heartland Center for Wholistic Health in Great Bend. She
 retired at the motherhouse in Great Bend in 2015.

Sister Anita was preceded in death by her parents and a brother 
Alvin. She is survived by three sisters, Joyce Irwin, Centennial, CO, 
Marilyn Grover, Olathe, KS, and Marge Widen, Concordia, KS; several 
nices and nephews; as well as the Domnican Sisters’ of Peace.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 
21, 2021. A Vigil Service will be held Monday, September 20, 2021, at 
7:00 p.m. Both will take place at the Sisters’ Convent. All attendees 
are asked to wear a mask. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection 
Cemetery. 

Memorials in honor of Sister Anita may be sent to Dominican

Sister Judith Schmidt, CSA, baptized Gladys Joan, died peacefully 
September 10, 2021, at St. Francis Home, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.&nbsp;
 Gladys was born April 13, 1934, in Catharine, Kansas, the oldest of 
seven children of Felix Schmidt and Angela Beilman Schmidt. Gladys grew 
up immersed in farm life among the Volga German community in Catharine.&nbsp;
 She attended Girls Catholic High School in Hays, Kansas, where she 
continued being taught by the Sisters of St. Agnes.&nbsp; After graduation 
from high school in 1952, Gladys entered St. Agnes Convent.&nbsp; She made 
her profession of vows in the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes as 
Sister Judith on August 15, 1955, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. &nbsp;
 Sister Judith received her BS in Elementary Education from Marian 
College of Fond du Lac in 1962, and, in 1971, her MS in Educational 
Administration from Marygrove College, Detroit, Michigan.&nbsp; She taught in
 elementary schools in Wisconsin including six years as principal and 
teacher at St. Bernard’s School, Watertown, Wisconsin.&nbsp; In 1969, she was
 appointed Apostolic Councilor for the congregation, assisting in 
educational planning and personnel placement for CSA. Following this 
term of service, Sister Judith was the principal of Immaculate 
Conception Grade School, Elmhurst, Illinois, from 1975–1977. &nbsp;
 In 1977, Sister Judith was elected General Superior of the 
Congregation, a position she held until 1985. She helped lead the 
community through the many changes in religious life that resulted from 
the Second Vatican Council.&nbsp;
 Upon completing her role as General Superior, Sister Judith attended
 the University of Wisconsin, Madison, taking courses in Adult Education
 and Governance in Higher Education. In the fall of 1986, she joined the
 education department at Marian College of Fond du Lac, guiding student 
teachers and assisting with the evening adult education programs.&nbsp; In 
1987, she was appointed the first Vice President of Development for 
Marian, a position she held for ten years.&nbsp; In her final years at 
Marian, she served as Vice President for Community Relations and 
Mission.&nbsp;
 In July 2008, Sister Judith became the first President of the 
combined&nbsp;St. Mary’s Springs&nbsp;High School and FACES System now known 
as&nbsp;St. Mary’s Springs&nbsp;Academy, Pre-K–12.&nbsp; She proudly served in this 
position until July 2011. In appreciation for her legacy of leadership 
and commitment to Marian University and St. Mary’s Springs Academy, an 
admission award for SMSA graduates enrolling in Marian was named the 
Sister Judith Schmidt Award. &nbsp;
 Sister Judith was beloved in the Fond du Lac community as an 
educational and civic leader, as a board member for several 
organizations serving those in need, and for fostering the expansion of 
the arts and music in the city.&nbsp; In June 2016, Sister Judith joined the 
community of sisters residing at Nazareth Court and Center in Fond du 
Lac.&nbsp; Frail health led her to move to St. Francis Home in 2020 where she
 received loving care until the time of her death. &nbsp;
 Sister Judith was preceded in death by her parents Felix and Angela 
Schmidt, her brother Thomas, and her sisters Inez Schmidt (infant), 
Phyllis Schmidt, and Pamela Shaffer.&nbsp;
 She is survived by her sisters Marla (Dennis) Staab and Donna

Eugene Joseph “Gene” Urban, 80, retired salesman for Star Lumber &amp; Supply, Cherry Orchard Furniture, Kansas Lighting, and Dillons, passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2021. 

Rosary, 7:30 p.m., Thursday, September 16, 2021; Funeral Mass, 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 17, 2021, both at Christ the King Catholic Church. 

Eugene was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a jack of all trades and had many hobbies that he pursued after his time in the service. He loved working on cars, loved watching NASCAR, and was a member of the Mulvane Marauders Car Club. He loved working as a carpenter, and was an avid woodworker, building grandfather clocks along with other types of clocks. He did a lot of coaching within the family and enjoyed cooking and baking for them as well. Eugene was a member of Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society at Christ the King Parish. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Eleanor Urban; brother, Ronald Urban, and brother-in-law, Leroy Klaus. 

Survivors include his wife, Judith; daughters, Jennifer Urban and Jessica (Brett) Johnson; sons, Michael, Brian and Eric (Candice) Urban; sister, Rita (Gene) Gabel; twin sister, Janet Klaus; brother, Adam Urban; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Roger (Evan) Walter.

Wanda Rose "Pondie" Schmidt, 89, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS. 

Wanda was born on July 29, 1932, in Rantoul, KS, the daughter of Clarence E. and Irene (Ice) Mercer.  On August 18, 1952, she married Gene Thomas Schmidt in Lorraine, KS, to this union they were blessed with four children, Steven, Kimba, David and Jay.

She was member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, both of Smith Center. 

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gene, two sisters, Fern Wiehe and Mary Lou Janzen and one brother, Wayne Mercer.

She is survived by her four children, Steven (Kelli) Schmidt of Smith Center, Kimba (Rob) Orr of Bennington, David (Maria) Schmidt of Cape Coral, FL, Jay (Shannon) Schmidt of Smith Center; a special friend, Eddie Hall of Smith Center; nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at United Methodist Church, 301 E. Kansas, Smith Center, KS, with Pastor Michael Ricci-Roberts officiating.  Visitation will be held on Monday, September 20, 2021, from 1:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS.  Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, KS. 

 Memorials may be given to the church and sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Ronald Edward “Ron” Urban, 77, died September 9, 2021, at the Dobson Hospice House in Mesa, Arizona. &nbsp;

He was born March 11, 1944, in La Crosse, Kansas, to Edward and Eleanor (Suppes) Urban.&nbsp; Ron graduated from Hays High School in 1962.&nbsp; He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1962-1967.&nbsp; He served on the USS O'Brien and also served in Vietnam.&nbsp; He met Karen Curry in Long Beach, California and they were united in marriage on February 12, 1966, in Lynwood, California.&nbsp; After his discharge from the Navy, Ron and Karen moved to Hays, Kansas and then to Everson, Washington in 1973.&nbsp; Ron was employed by the US Post Office until his retirement in 1999.&nbsp; In 2013, they moved to Mesa, Arizona to continue their retirement.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending time with his family and reading in his spare time.

Ron is survived by his wife of 55 years: Karen, his sons: Marc A. Urban of Lynden, WA and Joe A. (Erica) Urban of St. Peter, MN, his grandchildren: Kade, Amelia, Owen, Eden, and Frederick, his sisters: Rita (Gene) Gabel and Janet Klaus, both of Hays, KS, and his brothers: Gene (Judy) Urban of Wichita, KS and Adam Urban of Vancouver, WA.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, his mother-in-law, his brother-in-law: Leroy Klaus, and his sisters-in-law: Paula Urban and Mary Curry Somerville. &nbsp;
