Bill Hill, 95, died November 7, 2021, at Brookdale in Great Bend. He 
was born December 12, 1925, at Newton County, Arkansas, the son of Harve 
and Nellie Hill.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Hector 
before going to work in the oil and gas industry. He was proud to have 
worked for 41 years for Lario Oil &amp; Gas.

He married Mary (Habiger) Hill Sept. 11, 1950, at Holyrood, Kansas. 
Bill and Mary lived in Ellinwood for many years before moving to rural 
Ellis County, Kansas, in 1978. They moved to Great Bend in 1989. Bill 
was a scout troop leader in Ellinwood, accompanying the scouts to Camp 
Kansa, Philmont Scout Ranch and on many other trips. Bill took pride in 
his family and always stressed to them the importance of education. He 
enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing and birdwatching.

He is survived by three sons and their families, Dr. Lary M. and 
Diane Hill, Andover; Mark D. Hill and Scarlett Hill, Oakley; Kevin L. 
Hill and Teresa, Cedar Point; nine grandchildren and 13 
great-grandchildren, Sarah, Chris and Calvin Green, Wichita; Clayton, 
Carly, Dason, Kyler and Braxton Hill, Seneca; Kathryn Hill and Richard 
Pund, Overland Park; Shea Hill, Oakley; Cori, Cody, Tait, Maycee, Lakota
 and Hannah Younkin, Oakley; Jonathan, Amanda, Walter and Wade Hill, 
Spearfish, South Dakota; Dr. Nellie Hill, Manhattan; Heath Hill and 
Brynn, Darcy and Haidyn, Americus; and Cassidy Hill of St. George; 
cousin Johnny Hill and his wife Connie, Western Grove, Ark.; and 
numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved 
wife Mary Hill, aunt and uncle Gladys and Mose Hill and cousin Mozelle 
McBain.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, 
November 10, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive 
friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of 
Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 11, 
2021, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father 
Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, 
Great Bend. 

Memorials have been designated to Golden Belt Home Health 
and Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Bill Hill

Sheri Anne (Sextro) Heilman was born May 31, 1964, in Harlan, Iowa to
 Dave and Anne (Allstot) Sextro, and passed on to be with her Lord on 
November 7, 2021, after battling a rare form of cancer.

Following graduation from high school, Sheri attended the University 
of Northern Iowa and Drake University where she achieved her Bachelors 
and Masters degrees in English and Educational Administration. &nbsp;While 
teaching and coaching in the Titonka School District, Sheri met the love
 of her life, Carl Heilman. &nbsp;On July 27, 1990, Carl and Sheri were 
joined in holy matrimony. &nbsp; Of the many things Sheri did in her life, 
she took most pride in being a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, 
aunt, friend and teacher. &nbsp;

While living in Iowa, Carl and Sheri welcomed the first of their four
 children,&nbsp;Brooke Anne Heilman, who was born June 15, 1991. &nbsp;A job 
opportunity led the Heilman family to Arizona, where they would reside 
for the next 10 years and would welcome their second daughter, Alissa 
Roi Heilman, born February 17, 1994. &nbsp;It was while in Arizona that Sheri
 made the move from classroom teacher to school principal. &nbsp;God’s next 
plan led the Heilmans from Arizona to Robinson, Illinois, where they 
welcomed their third child, Scott Benjamin Heilman, on October 8, 2003. 
&nbsp;It was their time in Illinois that found the Heilmans extremely busy as
 both Sheri and Carl filled their roles as school administrators and 
parents to a growing family. &nbsp;As was their habit, a final move to Great 
Bend, Kansas, brought the arrival of another baby, when Maximus Otis 
Heilman was born on January 8, 2008. &nbsp;Sheri and Carl often joked that 
they would need to stop moving to different states.

Left to honor Sheri’s memory are her husband, Carl; daughters, Brooke
 Heilman, and Alissa Buenger (Chris); and sons Scott Heilman and Maximus
 Heilman. &nbsp;Additionally are her parents Dave and Anne&nbsp;Sextro; two 
sisters, Susan Oberg (Steve), and Beth Namanny (Mike); and brother Ryan 
Sextro (Melanie). &nbsp;As well, Sheri leaves behind her mother in-law, 
Marianne Vigen Stanard; a brother in-law, Darren Vigen, and sister 
in-law Darice (Vigen) Fink; five nieces, Jaime Hanson (Matthew), Taylor 
Namanny, Logan Namanny, Taegan Fink, and Terra Fink; three nephews, 
Ethan, Lincoln, and Beckett Sextro; and great nephew, Kaden Hanson.

Those who have gone on before to make a place for Sheri include, 
maternal grandparents, Cecil and Marcella Allstot; paternal 
grandparents, Frank and Lorine Sextro; Sheri’s father in-law and partner
 in crime, Otis Vigen; a nephew, Chris Oberg; two uncles; and four 
cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, 
November 11, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life 
ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m., at Encounter Church, First Assembly
 of God, on November 12, 2021. &nbsp;Cremation has already taken place and 
Sheri’s remains will be inurned in a burial plot at a private family 
service at a later date. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests 
memorials to be made to Scott and Max Heilman educational fund or the 
Central Kansas Dream Center, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Sheri Anne (Sextro) Heilman

Thomas Gene “Tom” Cook, 63, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Tom was born September 7, 1958, in Russell, the son of Bob and Norma Jean (Tomlin) Cook.&nbsp; He lived all of his life in Russell.&nbsp; He attended Bickerdyke Special Education Class and received a diploma from Russell High School in the Class of 1981.&nbsp; He then attended the Reed Center in Hays, Kansas since 1982 and the Pioneer Center in Russell since 2019.&nbsp; He was a paperboy for the Russell Daily News for many years.&nbsp; He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church, Russell Rough Riders, Russell Boy Scouts, and Larks of Plainville, Kansas.&nbsp; He enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics, playing basketball and tennis, bowling, listening to music on his record player and attending Church choir practice with his mom.&nbsp; He was an outgoing person who loved to be around people, constantly shaking hands and was friendly and always smiling.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and uncle Jerry Lowenstein.

Surviving family include his aunt, Kay Lowenstein of Manhattan, Kansas; guardian, Judy Riebel (Perry) of Russell, Kanas; cousins, Mark Lowenstein (Michelle) and Matt Lowenstein and other cousins; and many close friends.

The family of Tom would like to take this moment to thank the community of Russell for all the support given to our family through the years.&nbsp; When Tom was very young more than 200 volunteers (young and old) help pattern him each week in the Cook home hoping to improve his life.&nbsp; Your outpouring of love and conern for Tom has been tremendous and will never be forgotten.

Kathleen Joy Cassell, 93, passed away Saturday, 
November 6, 2021. She was born October 12, 1928, to Elmer Hagstrand and 
Mildred Pihl Hagstrand in Lindsborg, Kansas. Kathleen graduated from 
Marymount College in 1950.

In 1951, she married John Humbargar; they had six children: daughters 
Linda Draper, Connie Lyon, Teri Humbargar, and Jackie Sharp (all of 
Salina) and sons Michael John Humbargar (Hays) and Patrick James 
Humbargar (deceased.)

Kathleen married Joe Cassell in 1975 and worked until retirement at 
Waddles Heating and Cooling. Kathleen and Joe shared stepdaughters Joann
 and Vickie and their extended families. She was preceded in death by 
her parents, her son Patrick James, husband Joe Cassell, and two 
sisters. 
&nbsp; 
Kathleen is survived by the children listed as well as five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and three siblings. 
&nbsp; 
Cremation was chosen. Inurnment will take place at a later date. 
Memorials in honor of Mike Humbargar may be made to DSNWK (Developmental
 Services Northwest Kansas, Hays, KS) and sent in care of Ryan Mortuary.

Kathleen Joy Cassell

Geraldine E. “Jean” Moeder, 88, passed away November 7, 2021, at the 
University of Kansas Health Systems - Great Bend Campus.&nbsp; She was born 
November 28, 1932, in Hoisington, to Alois and Anna (Hitschmann) Reif.&nbsp; 
Jean married Richard Moeder on November 10, 1953, in Odin.

After growing up in Odin, Jean moved to Great Bend in 1950.&nbsp; She was a
 devoted wife and mother. She was also a registered nurse,&nbsp;working&nbsp;in 
St. Rose's surgical ward before focussing on her&nbsp;daughters and working 
with her husband Rich&nbsp;as bookkeeper for&nbsp;Rich's Electric.&nbsp; She was a 
devoted member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church,
 a 50-year member of the Immaculate Conception Circle of the Daughter's 
of Isabella. She was also a long term member of the church's&nbsp;Altar 
Society, in which she coordinated funeral dinners for many years.&nbsp;Jean 
enjoyed many years of bowling in&nbsp;Great Bend Women's Bowling Association,
 winning many league championships as well as the 1975 state singles 
title.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Moeder of the home; four 
daughters, Deb&nbsp;Floodman and husband Michael of Wichita, Cheri Hayes and 
husband Bill of New Fairfield, CT, Diane Stalcup and husband Kevin of 
Great Bend and Karen Williams and partner Kendal Nelson of Wichita; 
eight grandchildren, Kyle Gerstner and wife Allie, Abby Rickard and 
husband David, Macee Kelley and husband Daniel,&nbsp; Kelli Myers and husband
 Shane, Matt Stalcup and wife Andrea, Barry Stalcup and wife Daphne, 
Lauren Williams and Kacey Williams and partner Ryan Fletter; and 15 
great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by&nbsp;four brothers, Msgr. 
Steve Reif, Frank Reif, Lawrence Reif, and Tony Reif; two sisters, Irene
 Polzin and Emma Prosser; and son-in-law, Kirk Williams.

 Adelia (Block) Schwartz. He passed on Friday, November 5, 2021, at home
 surrounded by loved ones. He married Elvera Koester on July 15, 1951,&nbsp; in Ness City. 
Nelson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dighton. He was 
raised on the farm and enlisted in the United States Marines in 1950 and
 served during the Korean Conflict. He was released from active duty in
 1952 and stayed in the Marine Corps Reserves until being honorably 
discharged on August 22, 1959. Nelson acquired the family farm after 
returning from overseas active duty. He was a lifelong farmer/ rancher 
as well as other entrepreneurial businesses, which included 
pushing/packing silage dozing business and achieving Platinum level in 
the Amway business. 
He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, four-wheeling/ranger, 
auctioneering, riding horses especially in his younger years. He loved 
singing Gospel and country music. And if he wasn’t singing he’d be 
yodeling. Nelson was a man who brought such joy to his family, 
neighbors, loved ones and all he met. 
He is survived by his Daughter- Marletta Schwartz of Dighton, Brother- 
Eugene Schwartz of Littleton, Colorado, Son-In-Law- Randy &amp; Marla 
Evans of Dighton, Daughter-In-Law Mary Schwartz of Springfield, 
Missouri, 8 Grandchildren and 12 Great-Grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife, Daughter- Marsha Evans, 2
 Sons- Elwin Schwartz and Darrel Schwartz Grandson- Darek Evans, 
Great-Grandson- Tyler Long, Brother- Wilbert Schwartz and Sister- Nadine
 Goodman. 
Celebration of Life Service will be at 10:30 AM Thursday at the United 
Methodist Church in Dighton with Rev. Ken Bowden officiating. Military 
honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corp Honor Guard. 
Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to

Anna Flax, age 94, of Ellis, Kansas passed away Friday, November 5, 2021, at Hays Medical Center. She was born March 4, 1927, in Ellis, Kansas, to Philip and Frances (Gnad) Schuster. On September 20, 1948, she married Phillip J. Flax in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on May 13, 2009. Anna was a homemaker and truly loved being a mother and grandmother. She often cared for her grandchildren and preparing family dinners was something that she did often. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella both of Ellis. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, house plants, sewing and embroidery work. She married Clifford Martin and he preceded her in death on August 4, 1986.

Larry B. Ackerman, 67, passed away Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City, Kansas.

He was born on July 9, 1954, at Dodge City, Kansas, the son of Raymond 
“Ray” William and Mary Eleanor (Ring) Ackerman. Larry was a lifetime 
area resident attending Windthorst Schools through his sophomore year 
and graduated from Spearville High School. After high school he went on 
to Fort Hays State University to obtain his Bachelor’s degree. For 25 
years, he worked as the office manager for Farmland Industries Nitrogen 
Plant until July 2003 at which time he began farming and running cattle 
on the family farm full time. Spring calving season and harvest time 
were the highlights of his year, as well as occasionally “escaping the 
house” to impart his wisdom on the ladies at First National Bank in 
Spearville.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church and Knights of 
Columbus Council 1539 both in Spearville. He was also a longtime member 
of the Windthorst Grave Diggers.

On March 15, 1980, he married Kenna S. Ewy at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Windthorst.

Survivors include: his wife of 41 years, Kenna; their 3 sons, TJ 
Ackerman and wife Katie, Spearville, Bryce Ackerman, Ulysses, Kansas, 
and Mitchell Ackerman and wife Gentry, Hays, Kansas; 3 sisters, Marcia 
Farid, Wichita, Vicki Evinger and husband Jerome, Dodge City and 
Lynnette Hessman, Spearville; 3 brothers, Ed Ackerman and wife Toni, 
Brewster, Kansas, Rod Ackerman and wife Kerry, Brewster and Jeff 
Ackerman and wife Kelly, Hays; 4 brothers-in-law, Earl Cain, Clearwater,
 Kansas, John Ewy and wife Marsha, Jetmore, Pete Ewy and wife Patsy,

James G. 'Jim' Leiker

Donald L. Harrison was born on March 12, 1945, to Luetta Marie (Moore) 
Harrison and George Augustus Harrison, in Great Bend, Kansas. He passed 
away on November 5, 2021, at his home, in Colby, KS, at the age of 76. 
Don, along with his parents and older brother, Bob, live in Larned, 
where his dad worked in a funeral home, before moving back to Colby to 
help his grandfather Harrison rebuild the Harrison Motor Company, after 
it had burned down. Several years later Don’s dad decided to return to 
his original career in the funeral business and in 1956 built Harrison 
Chapel. 
Don graduated from Colby High School in 1963, he then attended Hutchison
 Jr. College and transferred to Kansas City Jr. College. In 1966 Don 
joined the US Army. He was honorably discharged in 1969. Seeing a lot of
 the world during his time in the service, he learned that having an 
education was something he needed the most. 
After his discharge Don went back to college at Washburn University, in 
Topeka, planning on becoming a teacher. But as life would have it, his 
mother died suddenly during this college time and that turned his 
interest towards helping his dad in the funeral home. After graduating 
from Washburn, Don went to San Francisco College of Mortuary Science and
 then returned home in 1972 to work with his father at Harrison Chapel. 
Don married Cathy J. Deyle on March 30, 1974, in Colby. They were 
blessed with two daughters, Nikki and Lindsey; and eventually three of 
their greatest blessings, grandsons; Landon, Jacob and Carson. 
Don purchased the funeral home from his father in 1979 and he and Cathy 
worked together for more than forty years serving the community during 
their time of need at Harrison Chapel, before retiring in 2011. 
Don and Cathy traveled in their early years of marriage with friends to 
many tropical places, enjoying beaches and scuba diving in all three 
Cayman Islands, Aruba, Kauai, and destinations in Mexico. But Don’s 
favorite trips were after retirement when he and Cathy took their family
 to Disney World, in Orlando, Florida; and then he and Cathy went to 
Alaska on a trip cruising for one week and then spending one week on 
land. They left a small piece of their hearts in Alaska. 
Don thoroughly enjoyed golfing with his buddies at Meadow Lake Golf 
Course and taking an annual trip with a larger group to Phoenix, Arizona
 in the winter each year. 
He was a member or past member of many organizations, such as Colby 
Kiwanis Club, 20+ years with the Colby College Vet. Tech IOCCA 
Committee, American Legion Post #0363, VFW Post #6882, Colby United 
Methodist Church, and he was a founding member of Hospice Services of 
Thomas County. 
Don was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert G. 
Harrison. He is survived by his wife, Cathy, of Colby; their daughters, 
Nikki (Andy) Bowen, along with grandson, Jacob, of Manhattan, KS and 
Lindsey (George) Tubbs, along with grandsons, Landon Bradley and Carson 
Smiley, of Colby; brother-in-law Gary (Mary) Deyle and sister-in-law 
Rita (Bobby) Jones, all of Benkelman, NE; sister-in-law Judy (Dusty) 
Baker, of Kansas City, KS and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends 
who were all very close to his heart. 
Visitation is 3-7:00 p.m. Monday, November 8, 2021, at Baalmann 
Mortuary, Colby. Funeral Service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 9, 
2021, at the United Methodist Church, Colby, with burial in Beulah

 </figure>Donald L. Harrison was born on March 12, 1945, to Luetta Marie (Moore) 
Harrison and George Augustus Harrison, in Great Bend, Kansas. He passed 
away on November 5, 2021, at his home, in Colby, KS, at the age of 76. 
Don, along with his parents and older brother, Bob, live in Larned, 
where his dad worked in a funeral home, before moving back to Colby to 
help his grandfather Harrison rebuild the Harrison Motor Company, after 
it had burned down. Several years later Don’s dad decided to return to 
his original career in the funeral business and in 1956 built Harrison 
Chapel. 
Don graduated from Colby High School in 1963, he then attended Hutchison
 Jr. College and transferred to Kansas City Jr. College. In 1966 Don 
joined the US Army. He was honorably discharged in 1969. Seeing a lot of
 the world during his time in the service, he learned that having an 
education was something he needed the most. 
After his discharge Don went back to college at Washburn University, in 
Topeka, planning on becoming a teacher. But as life would have it, his 
mother died suddenly during this college time and that turned his 
interest towards helping his dad in the funeral home. After graduating 
from Washburn, Don went to San Francisco College of Mortuary Science and
 then returned home in 1972 to work with his father at Harrison Chapel. 
Don married Cathy J. Deyle on March 30, 1974, in Colby. They were 
blessed with two daughters, Nikki and Lindsey; and eventually three of 
their greatest blessings, grandsons; Landon, Jacob and Carson. 
Don purchased the funeral home from his father in 1979 and he and Cathy 
worked together for more than forty years serving the community during 
their time of need at Harrison Chapel, before retiring in 2011. 
Don and Cathy traveled in their early years of marriage with friends to 
many tropical places, enjoying beaches and scuba diving in all three 
Cayman Islands, Aruba, Kauai, and destinations in Mexico. But Don’s 
favorite trips were after retirement when he and Cathy took their family
 to Disney World, in Orlando, Florida; and then he and Cathy went to 
Alaska on a trip cruising for one week and then spending one week on 
land. They left a small piece of their hearts in Alaska. 
Don thoroughly enjoyed golfing with his buddies at Meadow Lake Golf 
Course and taking an annual trip with a larger group to Phoenix, Arizona
 in the winter each year. 
He was a member or past member of many organizations, such as Colby 
Kiwanis Club, 20+ years with the Colby College Vet. Tech IOCCA 
Committee, American Legion Post #0363, VFW Post #6882, Colby United 
Methodist Church, and he was a founding member of Hospice Services of 
Thomas County. 
Don was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert G. 
Harrison. He is survived by his wife, Cathy, of Colby; their daughters, 
Nikki (Andy) Bowen, along with grandson, Jacob, of Manhattan, KS and 
Lindsey (George) Tubbs, along with grandsons, Landon Bradley and Carson 
Smiley, of Colby; brother-in-law Gary (Mary) Deyle and sister-in-law 
Rita (Bobby) Jones, all of Benkelman, NE; sister-in-law Judy (Dusty) 
Baker, of Kansas City, KS and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends 
who were all very close to his heart. 
Visitation is 3-7:00 p.m. Monday, November 8, 2021, at Baalmann 
Mortuary, Colby. Funeral Service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 9,

Eunice L. North, 97, McCracken, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis, Kansas.

Mrs. North was born January 28, 1924, in rural Rush County, Kansas, the daughter of Chess and Maggie (Hayes) Irvin.&nbsp; She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; Eunice was a homemaker and farm wife.&nbsp; She worked on the farm alongside her husband, Albert, whether that be working in the fields, running parts, or any of the other many chores she “volunteered” for.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She was a member of the EUB Church, which later became the United Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas.&nbsp; She served as the church Sunday School Treasurer for many years.&nbsp;

On May 18, 1941, she married Albert L. North at Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death January 22, 1994.

Survivors include:&nbsp; two sons, Arlyn North (Jan), McCracken, Kansas, and Daryl North, Hays, Kansas; two daughters, Jolene Showalter (Jesse), Bloomington, Illinois, and Janice Basgall, McCracken, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, Jacque Showalter Sparrow, Julie Showalter Stull (Craig), Jeffrey Showalter (Karen), Laura North Martin (Ronn), Heath North (Paula), Ted North (Shawna), Tricia North, Adam North (Jami), Travis North (Ava), Cindy North Zadina (Chris), Joshua North (Kayla), Dane Basgall (Janae), Danae Basgall Younger (Chris), and Dylan Basgall (Rachel); 26 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Paul North; an infant daughter, Joan North; one grandson, Arthur North; one great grandson, Cory Stull; two brothers, Williard Irvin and Chester Irvin; and one sister, Clara Daniel.

Kirby Allen Wade, 25, passed away at his home outside of Spearville on Nov. 3rd, 2021.

He was born in Jetmore on Nov. 29th, 1995, to Alicia (Ward) Wade and 
Dean Wade, both of Spearville. He is survived by both of his parents; 
his sister Olivia and Olivia's husband Darren (of Dallesport, WA); and 
his brother James and James' daughter Cozette (of Jetmore). Kirby
 attended his first few years of school in Jetmore, then transferred to 
Spearville. After high school, he worked as a motorcycle mechanic and 
sales person at Dodge City Powersports. Most recently, he was self 
employed as a motorcycle mechanic. Kirby was the light of his 
family member's lives. He was loved fiercely and deeply and will be 
missed tremendously. He was sweet, highly intelligent, absolutely 
hilarious, and beautifully unique. He was an introvert, but he was also 
magnetic, and he left a memorable impression on everyone who was 
fortunate enough to meet him. He enjoyed riding and working on 
motorcycles, driving and tuning cars, playing video games, tinkering 
with computers and electronics, and immersing himself in his favorite 
music. He packed a lot of living into his 25 years, from racing dirt 
bikes alongside his dad and brother for many years, to frequently 
traveling with his mom to visit his sister and brother-in-law in the 
wild Pacific Northwest, to seeing his favorite bands live on multiple 
occasions, to swimming with barracudas in the Caribbean sea. An informal gathering will be held to honor and celebrate Kirby's life on the second weekend of Nov.

Dorothy “Dee” D. White, 85, passed away November 4, 2021 at her home in Jetmore.

She was born June 29, 1936 in Englewood, KS, the daughter of Frederic
 Solomon and Mary Henrietta Klotz Ward.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident, she 
was retired from Venture Corporation after many years.

She was of the Christian faith and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Gold Wing Riders Association.

On April 3, 1954 she married Harley “Gene” White in Granby, MO.&nbsp; He passed away on January 2, 1999.

Survivors include: three sons, David (Audrey) White, South Haven, KS,
 Rick (Nancy) White, Bakersfield, CA, Ron (Ronda) White, Jetmore, KS; 
daughter, Dorothy “Dot” (William) Fernandez, Lawrence, KS; fourteen 
grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Miran “Sonny” 
Ward; six sisters, Katy Jones, Ellen Sherrill, Vona Bedell, Freda Lynn, 
Lois Jackson and Lucy Green.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at 
United Presbyterian Church, Jetmore, with Rev. Mark Durham presiding.&nbsp;

Vearl Moore, 87, a longtime resident of Oakley, died 
Wednesday November 3rd, 2021, at Grace Cottage in Wichita Kansas. He was born 
June 9th, 1934, to Esther an Art Moore in Beaver County Oklahoma. The 
family move to Englewood, Kansas where he attended Grade School and High
 School. He loved playing sports in High School and was on the State 
Champion basketball team. He worked several odd jobs during this time, 
but mainly worked in the alfalfa fields with his Father and Brothers. 
After High School he attended Northwestern State Teachers College in 
Alva, Oklahoma. He graduated in 1957 and was drafted into the Army in 
September of 1957. He married his college sweetheart Barbara Stewart on 
February 15th, 1958. A month later, he was stationed in Germany and his 
wife joined him in July, where they traveled and toured Germany by train
 during his leave time. 
In August 1959 they moved to Oakley to start their teaching career. 
Vearl taught Junior High Math for 18 years. During this time, he also 
coached Football, Basketball, Wresting, and Track. In 1965 they had 
their first child Deb and then a second child Rick in 1968. 
In 1969, they purchased their farm south of Oakley. Vearl enjoyed farm 
life where he raised wheat, sheep, and cattle. He always had a large 
garden that he would go work in to relax during the evening hours. He 
was a hard-working man, faithful church attender, and a man of faith. He
 served on the Country Chapel Board, FSA Board, and the Country Club 
Board. 
Spending time with his family was very important to him. During most 
Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks he would go to visit his parents and 
in-laws in Oklahoma. Quail hunting in Oklahoma was one of the many high 
lights of the trips. Another very special time was when he took his wife
 and family to Hawaii on a cruise to celebrate their 50th Wedding 
Anniversary. Oh, by the way, he then had to take the family on another 
cruise to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Vearl and Barbara 
were united in marriage for 63 wonderful years. 
He is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter Deb and Wendy, of Wichita, 
Kansas; son Rick and Tish, of Colorado Springs; three grandchildren, 
Ryan Moore, Jordan Moore, and Eden Garst; one brother Melvin and 
Harriet, of Rockport, Texas; two sisters, Vivian Graves, of Tescott, 
Kansas, and Carolyn Myers, of Orlando, Florida; one sister-in-law Joyce 
Moore, of McPherson, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews, other 
relatives, and friends. 
Vearl loved his family very much and will be greatly missed by all. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2021, at Baalmann

Helen Ruth (Schemm) Ziegler, 97, of WaKeeney, Kansas passed away on 
November 4, 2021. Helen was born in Trego County Kansas on May 20, 
1924.&nbsp; She graduated from WaKeeney High School in 1943.

Helen was united in marriage to Edward M. Ziegler on June 21, 1948.&nbsp; 
They were married 64 years.&nbsp; As a student in high school Helen enjoyed 
using her artistic talents and later enjoyed being a homemaker, working 
in the garden, cooking, and doing crocheting projects.

Helen is survived by son Kenneth E. Ziegler and wife Jean of Ames, 
Iowa, daughter Gwen L. Billings and husband Larry of Lawrence, Kansas, 
son Howard A. Ziegler and wife Laura of Olathe, Kansas, 4 grandsons, 2 
granddaughters, 6 great grandsons, 5 great granddaughters, and other 
family and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents Paul George and Katherine

James Robert Lewis, 48 passed away November 2, 2021, at University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

He was born October 22, 1973, in Greensburg, KS, the son of James 
Randall and Marilyn Kay Wining Lewis; he’s been a Larned resident since 
1989 and was a truck driver.

He loved riding motorcycles and side by sides, spending time 
outdoors, fishing, shooting and always enjoyed watching movies and 
spending time with his family.

Survivors include; his father and step-mother, Randy and Linda Lewis,
 Larned; his step-dad, Ron Smith, Larned; three daughters, Macee Lewis, 
Larned, Jamie &nbsp;(Brittni) Lewis, Hoisington, Brandi Lewis, Larned; a 
sister, Wendy (Miguel) Ibarra, Larned, an uncle, Robert Wining, Wichita,
 a step-sister, Donna (Richard) Moore, Fort Worth, Texas; two 
step-brothers, Daniel (Kamlay) Davis, Liberal, Dale (Kristen) Davis, 
Salem, OR, two grandchildren, Haeven and Hazel and his niece and nephew,
 Carlos and Selena Ibarra.

He was preceded in death by; his mother, Marilyn Smith.

James Robert Lewis

Mary Lou Schlick, age 79, passed away October 31st, 2021 at KU Medical 
Center in Kansas City, Kansas surrounded by her loving family. She was
 born August 20th, 1942 in Grainfield, KS in their family home. She grew
 up near Leoville, KS and was the third of five children, which included
 Jim Herl, Lee Herl, Bill Herl and Pat Herl.
 MaryLou graduated from Leoville Rural High School in 1961. After 
graduation, she worked at the hospital in Atwood, Kansas. She met the 
love of her life, Roger Schlick at the wedding of Elmer and Bernadine 
Rietcheck.
 On December 1st, 1962, MaryLou was united in marriage to Roger 
Schlick. They lived in Hoxie and were blessed with three children, 
daughter Sandy, son Kelly and daughter Colette. 
 MaryLou’s passions were her faith, family and her community. Roger 
and MaryLou quietly gave of their time, talent and treasure. From 
welcoming new people to town, to opening their home when someone was in 
need, to caring for the sick, Marylou always did so with her love of 
Jesus in mind and heart.
 MaryLou was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church. She was a 
Eucharistic Minister, Rosary Leader, Sodality member, RCIA Leader, Totus
 Tuus volunteer, Prayer in Action and Bible Study Leader for the youth 
group.
 MaryLou is survived by her husband, Roger, their three children and 7

Mary Lou (Herl) Schlick

Donald Jean Hurst, 92, Hays, died Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at his home.

He was born April 9, 1929, in Rural 
Rawlins County, Kansas the son of Aubra and Hazel (Riblett) Hurst.&nbsp; He 
was a 1947 graduate of Atwood High School.&nbsp; He graduated from Fort Hays 
State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1957 and a Master’s Degree 
in Education and Education Administration in 1960.&nbsp; On September 1, 1951,&nbsp; he was united in marriage to Viola R. Heaton and they were married 70 
years.&nbsp; 

Don served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean 
Conflict.&nbsp; He taught in rural schools in Rawlins and Decatur Counties, 
and in Atwood and Hays.&nbsp; He was principal of Lincoln Elementary School 
and was then hired as the first Assistant Superintendent of Schools for 
USD 489 in 1966 and also served as the Director of K-12 Curriculum 
Development and Director of Special Education, retiring in June of 1992 
after 36 years in the district.&nbsp; He was a member of the Hays First 
United Methodist Church, a life member of the National Association of 
Elementary School Principals, and served as president of several 
organizations including the Kansas Association of Supervision and 
Curriculum Development, Hays Rotary Club, and the FHSU Chapter of Phi 
Delta Kappa education fraternity where he was a charter member.&nbsp; Don was
 a 71-year member of the Masonic Fraternity, Atwood Lodge #164.&nbsp; He 
enjoyed volunteering at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

Survivors include his wife Viola, two 
sons: James Hurst and wife Terri, Douglas Hurst, seven daughters: 
Margaret “Jodi” Brungardt, Beverly “Jill” Schuckman, Joyce Klaus and 
husband Al, DJ Hurst, Connie Hurst-Bayless and husband Ben, Ardie Hurst,
 and Marsha Stremel and husband Cary, two sisters: Betty Beckley and 
Shirley Most, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and 
great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, his sisters: Nellie Hurst, Euella Erickson, Florine Vernon, 
Pauline Olsen, and Nora Bearley, his brothers: John Hurst and Francis 
Hurst, and two grandchildren: Janice Schuckman and Cambry Dinkel.

Funeral services were Wednesday, 
November 3, 2021, at Hays First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Craig 
Hauschild and Matt Dumler officiating.&nbsp; Burial with Masonic Funeral 
Rites by the Atwood Masonic Lodge followed in Fort Hays Memorial 
Gardens.&nbsp;

Marietta Theresa Kamas was born on Saturday, August 14th, 1926, to Carl and Mary (Baumstimler) Koerner in Hays, Kansas. She passed away on Sunday, October 31st, 2021 in Denver, Colorado at the age of 95.

Marietta was one of three children born to Carl and Mary and 
she spent her early years in Hays, Kansas. She moved to Denver in her 
20s where she worked as a telephone operator. She met Stan Kamas 
during this time and they fell in love. They were married on March 13th,
 1949, in Denver. Together their raised four children, Tracy, Garry, 
Sherri, and Rob. In 1957, they moved to Boulder where they raised their 
family. She moved to Lafayette after her husband passed away in 1998.

Marietta was an incredibly talented cross-stitcher and won 
awards for this talent. She created hundreds of beautiful pieces for 
family and friends. Marietta was a loving mother, wife, and homemaker. 
She will be remembered for her kindness and the pieces she so carefully 
created will be cherished for many years to come.

Marietta is preceded in death by her loving husband, Stan 
Kamas; her parents, Mary and Carl Koerner of Hays, KS and Denver, CO 
respectively; her brother, Jak Koerner of Benicia, CA; her sister, 
Kathleen Hilgers of Surprise, AZ; and son-in-law, Dave Shinkle of 
Windsor, CO. 

She is survived by her daughter, Tracy (Cliff) Tuttle of 
Broomfield, CO; her son, Garry (Cheryl) Kamas of Lafayette, CO, their 
daughter, Candis (Ian) Hunter and their two sons, David and Graham; and 
their son Kyle (Ashley) Kamas and their daughters, Aurelia and Khloe; by
 her daughter, Sherri Shinkle of Windsor, CO, her children Erik Shinkle,
 Tyler Shinkle, Swoti (Eric) Wise, and Kanchana Shinkle; and by her son,
 Rob (Susie) Kamas of Longmont, CO, their children, Justin Kamas (Erin 
Rummel) and their son, Kase; Tiffany (Russ) Hebert and their son 
Stephen.

A private visitation and graveside service will be held to lay Marietta to rest.

Nola Ruth Seidel Van Scyoc, 95, of Fayetteville, Ark., passed away 
November 4, 2021, in Fayetteville, Ark. She was born January 13, 1926, 
in Tipton, Kan., to Charles Jacob Seidel and Esther Elise Zimmerman 
Seidel. She earned her bachelor's degree at Fort Hays State 
University (Kansas) and served as Assistant to the Director of Secondary
 Education for a period. At various times, Nola was a teacher, 
secretary, librarian, Sunday School teacher, scout leader, volunteer, 
and tutor, but most of all, she enjoyed being a homemaker and 
participating in family activities. She was a member of St. John's 
Lutheran Church in Fayetteville. She was preceded in death by her 
husband of 60 years, Leo Ledgerwood Van Scyoc; a son-in-law, John Gordon
 Holcomb of Fayetteville; a step-grandson, Walter Aidan Robinson of 
Fayetteville; three brothers, Walter Seidel of Phillipsburg, Kan., 
Donald Seidel of Duluth, Ga., Eugene Seidel of Tipton, Kan.; and two 
sisters, Elna Germer of Hebron, Neb., and Vera Anne Hemphill of Lincoln,
 Neb. Nola is survived by two daughters, Joyce V. Van Scyoc Bocksnick

Holcomb Cameron and husband Anthony of Goshen, Ark. (Abram, Audrey); 
Piper Van Scyoc Wakefield and husband, Benjamin of Cleveland, Ohio

Robyn Renee Appel, 57, passed away November 2, 2021 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS.

She was born July 6, 1964 in Dodge City, KS, the daughter of Johnnie 
D. and Kathleen “Kathy” A. Grumbein Appel.&nbsp; Robyn was friendly and full 
of energy.&nbsp; She would greet you with a hug, kiss, and pat!&nbsp; She loved 
babies, animals, (although all animals were “cats”) her stuffed animals,
 helping in the kitchen and going for car rides.&nbsp; She liked to laugh, be
 the center of attention and would get very excited about special 
occasions, especially if it was centered around her.&nbsp;

Robyn was mostly non-verbal and used sign language often to 
communicate. She struggled and often was frustrated trying to express 
her feelings.

Survivors include: two brothers, Mike (Phyllis) Appel, Dodge city and
 John Pat Appel, Topeka; three nephews, Jeremy (Ashley) Appel, Jetmore, 
Josh Appel, Mason City, IA, Caleb Appel, Topeka; niece, Amy (Jon) 
Eilert, Beloit and six great nieces and nephews, Korbin, Colt, Quinn, 
Callie, Kassidy, Cambryn and lots of friends.&nbsp; She will be greatly 
missed by all her caregivers and roommates who always looked out for 
her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Kathy Appel

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, November 8, 2021 at Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.&nbsp;
