Jean K. Yanda, age 66, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2021, at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She was born May 22, 1955, in Haven, Kansas, to Kenneth and Hazel (Wilson) Morris. On August 5, 1977, she married Joseph Yanda in Oakley, Kansas. Jean taught school at several locations including pre-school at St. Mary's School in Ellis and serving as a para at the Hays Area Children's Center. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, and VFW Auxiliary all of Ellis. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, arts and crafts. She is survived by her husband, Joseph of Ellis; a son, Dean Yanda of Ellis and daughter-in-law Emily Yanda of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Jessica Smith and husband Jon of Baltimore and Amanda Cross and husband Casey of Hays; as well as two grandchildren, Ayden, and Ella Yanda. She was preceded in death by her parents; a stepfather, Bernard Morris and a twin brother, Dean Morris. Jean K. Yanda

Stanley Wancura was born September 16, 1940, to Willie and Clara Wancura
 in Atwood, Kansas. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family on 
November 8, 2021, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby, at the age of 81. 
In his younger years, he lived on the family farm near Ludell where he 
worked hard helping his dad with daily farm tasks. He graduated from 
Atwood High School in 1958 and shortly after, proposed to the love of 
his life at the Atwood Dime Store. Stan and Verda Headrick married at 
the Federated Church in McDonald on December 28,1958. 
Stanley worked at the Ludell elevator, Rawlins County Road &amp; Bridge,
 Tubbs and Bush Ford in Atwood and later Tubbs and Sons Ford in Colby, 
Unruh Auto, and UPS (one of the first drivers hired in the state of 
Kansas), until he and Verda opened their NAPA store in 1976. He was a 
member of the First Christian Church in Colby and belonged to the Colby 
Chamber of Commerce. 
Over the years, they enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Canada, 
California, and Alaska. Along with traveling for family events, they 
loved trout fishing, hunting, and camping together. For their 50th 
anniversary, Stan and Verda enjoyed an Alaskan cruise with their four 
children. Stan and Verda enjoyed 63 years of marriage together. 
They were blessed with four children, Deanna Krannawitter, Debbie Moos 
(companion Todd Miller), Tim (fiance Angie Johnson) Wancura and Dana 
(David) Batt; nine grandchildren, Sarah, Jessica, Aimee, Amanda, JC, 
Jonathan, Austin, Anna, and Paul David; sixteen precious 
great-grandchildren, and two precious great-great-grandchildren. Other 
survivors include sisters, Gertie (Ted) Kastens, Charlene (Jack) 
Shelton, and Cindy (Kevan) Trenkle, and many nieces, nephews, and 
cousins. Stan was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law 
Dorothy Headrick; son-in-law Mark Krannawitter; sister-in-law Valyne 
Dirks, and great-granddaughter Tesla McLaughlin. 
Stan proved every day that working hard included sacrifice and 
throughout the years showed those around him the quality of having a 
strong work ethic. Stan worked the hardest at the end of his life by 
making the ultimate choice to join those who passed before him to walk 
alongside Jesus in the gardens of Heaven. 
Visitation will be 5-7 pm Friday, November 12, 2021, at Baalmann 
Mortuary, Colby. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 
13 at the mortuary with burial in Beulah Cemetery, Colby. Per Stanley’s

Kayla Lynn Campbell was born on July 2, 1995, in Wichita, Kansas, to 
Kenneth Lee Bowman and Carol Lynne King (Campbell). She passed away on

 Kayla attended Norton County High School in Norton, Kansas, graduating in 2013. 
 Kayla’s whole world revolved around her daughter, Nevaeh, she worked
 very hard to provide the best life for her. She worked in a nursing 
home and was currently working at Subway.

Kayla Lynn Campbell

It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family mourns the passing 
of Joseph Robert LeClair of Norton, Kansas on November 7, 2021 at the 
age of 27.
 Joseph was born on November 18, 1993 at 9:35 pm at the Good 
Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska to Starla and Jeff LeClair. He 
was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Edmond Ks.
 Joseph attended grade school at Eisenhower Elementary in Norton, 
Kansas. He attended Junior High in Norton and participated in football, 
basketball and ran hurdles and long jumped in track. Joseph attended 
High School in Norton for his Freshman, Sophomore and Senior year 
participating in basketball and track and field. Joseph's junior year he
 lived in Sublette Kansas attending Sublette HS and played basketball. 
His family remembers that during a game in Sublette he broke his nose 
and ended up in the ER. This year was also the days Joseph sported the 
Mohawk. Joseph graduated from high school in 2012. Joseph attended for a
 short time Fort Hays State University and NCKTC in Hays majoring in 
business.
 Joseph was currently employed by Tim and Dave Sprigg on Bullseye 
Ranch and D&amp;C Cattle Company in Norton, KS. He spent years prior 
working for his Grandpa Joe on Sproul Farms in Edmond, KS.
 Joseph enjoyed this past summer on the lake fishing in his boat. He 
was a lover of all animals. He was in the process having a friend help 
him break his horse Daisy. He also had Dolly who was a dog he rescued, 
that lives at his grandparents farm in Edmond Kansas.
 He loved spending time with family and was an excellent model for 
his Neice Natalee, so she could practice her makeup skills. Joseph had a
 knack to take any situation and make you laugh or smile. He lived with a
 big heart and was always willing to help anybody in their time of need.
 Joseph helped his Grandpa Joe tend to the Edmond Cemetery. He also 
helped them garden and plant the flower beds at their farm.
 His cousin Jeremy stated that he was the tallest member of our family.
 He will be dearly missed by his friends at Freedom of Choice in Norton Kansas.
 He will be lovingly remembered by his parents Starla LeClair of 
Norton and his father Jeff and Kristy LeClair of Norton; grandparents: 
Joe &amp; Kandi Sproul of Edmond, KS and Judith LeClair of Duluth, MN;

Joseph Robert LeClair

Larry Leon Guinn, 83, passed away on Nov. 5, 2021, in Aurora, CO. He was
 born on Sept. 25, 1938, in Oberlin, KS to Bruce and Dorthea (Bowser) 
Guinn.
 Larry grew up in Oberlin and graduated from DCHS in 1956. He was on
 the Oberlin football team that went undefeated in 1955. He was also the
 state wrestling champion his senior year. After high school he went to 
Fort Hays State University and received a bachelor’s degree in Education
 in 1962. He then moved to Denver, CO area where he was a PE teacher 
and coached both wrestling and football for 30 years. In 1967 he 
married Barbara James and to that union they had a son, Scott. Larry 
had the hobby of buying old cars, fixing them up and trading for 
something else. He also loved watching and talking about his favorite 
sports teams.
 Larry is survived by wife, Violet Guinn of Aurora, CO; son; Scott 
(Brook) Guinn of Anderson, SC; grandsons; Skyler and Alex; brother; Gary
 (Marjorie) Guinn of Oberlin, KS, he is also survived by several nieces 
and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Bruce 
(Hazel) Guinn and Don (Juanita) Guinn.

John Wayne Akard, 80, passed away November 6, 2021, at his home in 
Great Bend. He was born on March 2, 1941, at Delta County, Texas, to 
Wayne &amp; Daisy (Simpson) Akard. He married Linda Mudgett on December 
27, 1968, at Mesquite, Tex.

A resident of Great Bend for the last 9 years, John was formerly of 
Arthur City, Tex. and Foley, Mo. He was a Pastor for Bible Holiness 
Church. He loved performing God's work and his children.

Survivors include, his wife, Linda Akard of the home; a son, David 
Akard of Great Bend; two daughters, Christy Romero and husband Aaron of 
Cimarron, and Angela Gordon and husband Curtis of Wichita; a brother, 
Jerry Akard of Paris, Tex.; a sister, Dot Dankowski and husband Herb of 
Paris, Tex.; five grandchildren, Erica McEnulty, Caleb Romero, Travis 
Gordon, Corey Gordon, and Eric Gordon; and one great grandson, Grayson 
Forrest. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Jessie 
Cockrum, Jean Hambright, and Greta Easley; and a sister in law, Anna 
Akard.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, 
November 11, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with service at 2:30 p.m., 
Thursday, November 11, 2021, with Pastor Curtis Gordon officiating.

John Wayne Akard

Nancy Marie Brady, 66, passed away November 8, 2021, at Diversicare 
of Larned. She was born on July 24, 1955, at Great Bend, to Alvin &amp; 
Janet (Read) Schettler. She married Dale Brady on April 27, 1974, at 
Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend.

A lifetime Rush County resident, Nancy was a devoted wife, mother and
 grandma. She had been a social worker for SWKAAA for 17 years, retiring
 in 2015.&nbsp; Previous to that, she served as a social worker for hospice 
and worked at Barton County Community College.&nbsp; Nancy was a member of 
Peace Lutheran Church, Albert. Having a servant’s heart, she volunteered

and husband Paul of Texas; two brothers, Mike Schettler and wife Terri 
of Great Bend, and David Schettler and wife Nola of Omaha, Neb.; four 
grandchildren, Bryce Maneth, Kolton Maneth, Hanna Duran and Brady Duran;
 brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lee and Jane Brady of Albert; 
brother-in-law, Charlie McClure; and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Nancy 
was preceded in passing by a sister-in-law, Arlene McClure.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, 
November 11, 2021 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends 
from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral 
Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 12, 2021, at Peace 
Lutheran Church in Albert with Rev. Wayne Baldyga presiding. Interment 
will follow at Peace Lutheran Church Cemetery in Albert.

Peace Lutheran Church, Albert. Having a servant’s heart, she volunteered

Matthew R. Morgenstern, 46, died November 8, 2021, at Wesley Medical 
Center, Wichita.&nbsp; He was born November 14, 1974, in Wichita, Kansas, the
 son of Robert and Janice E. (Smith) Morgenstern. Matt graduated from 
Hoisington High School in 1993 and then attended Fort Hays State 
College.

A lifetime Hoisington resident he worked for FIS, a partner of Cuna.&nbsp;
 Matt was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the 
Knights of Columbus Council #1521.&nbsp; Matt enjoyed helping on the farm 
particularly during harvest.&nbsp; He was an avid outdoorsman, he loved 
hunting, kayaking, and camping.&nbsp; He also loved playing cards and 
attending sporting events, but most especially spending time with family
 and friends.

He is survived by; his parents, Bob and Jan Morgenstern of 
Hoisington; two sisters, Crista Robinson and Karla Wilkens and husband 
Jake, all of Hoisington; he was especially proud of his nephews and 
niece, Xavier, Chase, Legend, and Jason Robinson and Kinley and Adler 
Wilkens; and so many much loved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Dian Lorene Jennings passed away November 8, 2021, at Redbud Village in 
Plainville, KS at the age of 86. Dian was born on June 23, 1935, in 
Codell, Kansas to Robert &amp; Serena Languein.
 Dian graduated from Codell Rural High School in 1953. She married 
Darold Jennings on November 26, 1954, at the Codell Baptist Church. To 
this union two children were born, one daughter and one son.
 Dian was a homemaker and lived her entire married life in the 
country along the Saline River near Turkville. She was always there for
 her family and friends. She loved to knit and bake and was very skilled
 at both. She enjoyed all family gatherings, but especially enjoyed 
celebrating family birthdays and Christmas. She was a very kind person 
and a caregiver her entire life, taking care of her husband and family 
members in addition to the numerous family pets. 
 Dian was a member of Saline Homemakers FCE club in Ellis County for 
55+ years. Dian was a breast cancer survivor and participated for many 
years in the Ellis County Cancer “Day of Care” fashion shows in Hays.
 Dian is survived by daughter, Debra Eaves, Wichita; son Doug 
Jennings &amp; wife Brenda, Plainville; granddaughters Bobie Jennings, 
Hays and Gretchen Jennings, Selden; and one great-granddaughter, Kadalen
 Dian Unrein of Selden; sister-in-law Mazie White, Riverton, Utah; 
brother-in-law Joseph Dooley II, Bonner Springs, KS, along with many 
nieces and nephews.
 She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert &amp; Serena

It is with heavy 
hearts that we assemble with our memories of Betty Jean Price. After a 
grueling eight-week battle with her critical illness, it became evident 
she would not recover. Her legacy, however, shall live on in her family 
and friends forevermore. Her passing has stirred the hearts of so many; 
an outpouring of caring and love toward those she leaves behind.

Her time on earth was short. On Friday, 29 October 2021, her strength
 diminished as her illness progressed. What had been deemed stable 
critical reduced to the time is nigh. Her weary body could no longer 
fight the effects of her illness. She peacefully released her soul to 
the greater life that awaited her in the Light. She passed around 4:15pm
 with her husband Lew Price, and daughter, Polly {Paulette} Price, 
nearby.

It is the family’s desire to hold a Celebration of Life for Betty J 
Price on Saturday, 8 January 2022. Time and location are being 
finalized. Notifications will be distributed as soon as this information
 is solidified. Her wishes for inurnment shall be held at a private 
family only event.

Betty Jean Price was the firstborn daughter of Dale and Annette 
Walraven. She arrived 18 March 1952, in Hays, Ellis County, Kansas. Her 
school life was well rounded and well-traveled. Her parents relocated to
 Kimball, then Potter, Nebraska. In 1966, the family relocated one more 
time. This journey brought them to Baker, Fallon County Montana where 
she completed her high school education. Destiny intertwined two hearts 
to move forward from friends to soul mates.

Her marriage to Lew Price was held in Baker Community Church, Baker, 
Montana on 12 March 1983. They resided in Baker MT prior to moving to 
Billings, Montana where Lew attended then known as Eastern Montana 
College. Their journey continued to Washington state, and Mulvane, 
Sedgwick County Kansas. They traveled and settled in Burnsville, Dakota 
County Minnesota in 1996, where they raised their two children.

One son, Devin, married Sabrina, blessing Betty with Nova Jean Price,
 her namesake. They reside in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. A son, Cassius 
{pronounced Cass-ē-us} Llwellyn Price is expected to arrive in early 
2022. Betty will be looking in on his progress as days grow closer to 
his arrival and forevermore. One daughter, Paulette Jessie Kay Price, 
resides in West St Paul, Minnesota.

Betty Price had an outstanding musical ability which she volunteered 
and prominently displayed her expertise as Director of Music for Bethel 
85, the Job’s Daughters group attended by her daughter. She also played 
piano in her church, New Spirit UCC, Savage, Minnesota.

Her creativity extended beyond music. She received her Associate 
Degree in Graphic Design where her talents were shared as a free lance 
artist. Her artistic prowess and passion for photography was 
unmistakable. She produced remarkable photos of areas visited during 
their vacations. She also documented weddings and Bethel 85 events, to 
name a few, when asked to assist.

Most recently she touched the hearts and lives of employees and 
customers in the Custom Blinds and Drapes of JC Penney, Burnsville, 
Minnesota. Customers would ask for her, and, if unavailable, would 
return only when she was working.

An angel now resides in heaven with the loved ones who were awaiting 
her arrival, including her dogs who crossed the rainbow bridge before 
her. She is survived outside her immediate family by her sister, Deborah
 (Walraven) Wenger of Oconomowoc, Waukesha County Wisconsin. There are 
ten nieces and nephews and fourteen grandnieces and grandnephews that 
feel the impact for her passing.

Love and well-wishes reverberate through the scores of messages to Lew and Betty’s family.

… and, of course, the lives of friends she touched during her lifetime
 shall fondly speak her name, remembering her kind and loving heart.

Ronald Dean Horchem, passed away on Friday, November 5, 2021, at Trego
 County-Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, KS.&nbsp; He was born on August 
25, 1933, to Orville “Mike” and Chole (Scott) Horchem in Great Bend. KS.

Ron was raised on the family farm North of Ransom, Kansas. He spent 
his life farming the land that he so loved. Ron was the 4th generation 
to farm this land.&nbsp;

Ronald married the love of his life Dorothy McDaniel,&nbsp;in Dalhart, TX 
on&nbsp; July 16, 1952. Dorothy and Ron were blessed with four children, Gary
 Dean, Debra LoAnn, Mark, and Deva Sue. Also, an honorary son, Henrik 
Frokjaer-Jensen.

Ron spent many years driving an activity bus taking students to ball 
games. For 50 years Ron kept the books for basketball games. He spent 
many active years in 4-H, Lion’s Club, Extension Council, and City 
Council. He volunteered many years for the Ness County Amusement 
Company. For many years, Ron bowled in a bowling league until Covid shut
 down the league 2 years ago.&nbsp;

Preceding Ron in death were his  parents, Orville “Mike” and Chole Horchem; his wife, Dorothy Horchem; his daughter, Debra LoAnn (Horchem) Smith and her husband, Don. &nbsp;

Surviving Ron is his son, Gary Horchem and his wife, Luann, of 
Ransom; son, Mark Horchem of Ransom, and daughter, Deva Ingraham and 
husband, Gordon, of Carlsbad New Mexico; 4 granddaughters, Angela 
Horchem and Matt McKenzie of Tucson, AZ, Jennifer Costello and Michael 
of Wichita, KS, Amanda Lee and Josh of Lubbock, TX Kayla Olmsted and 
Luke of Cavalier, ND; 2 grandsons, Jerod Horchem and Megan of Ransom, KS
 and Charlie Ingraham of Lubbock, TX;&nbsp; 2&nbsp; great granddaughters, Praylee 
Horchem and Mercedes Horchem,&nbsp; 4 great grandsons. Trigger Horchem, 
Benjamin Olmstead, Leif Olmestead, and Theodore Olmstead. Also, an 
honorary son, Henrik Frokjaer-Jensen and his wife Lotte Asminn of 
Denmark. Nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

Visitation will be held at the Ransom church of Christ on Friday, November 12, 2021, from 6-8:00 p.m.

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at the Ransom church of Christ.

Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, or the Ness County 
Amusement Company.

Frokjaer-Jensen.Ron spent many years driving an activity bus taking students to ball 
games. For 50 years Ron kept the books for basketball games. He spent 
many active years in 4-H, Lion’s Club, Extension Council, and City 
Council. He volunteered many years for the Ness County Amusement 
Company. For many years, Ron bowled in a bowling league until Covid shut
 down the league 2 years ago.&nbsp;Preceding Ron in death were his parents, Orville “Mike” and Chole Horchem; his wife, Dorothy Horchem; his daughter, Debra LoAnn (Horchem) Smith and her husband, Don. &nbsp;Surviving Ron is his son, Gary Horchem and his wife, Luann, of 
Ransom; son, Mark Horchem of Ransom, and daughter, Deva Ingraham and 
husband, Gordon, of Carlsbad New Mexico; 4 granddaughters, Angela 
Horchem and Matt McKenzie of Tucson, AZ, Jennifer Costello and Michael 
of Wichita, KS, Amanda Lee and Josh of Lubbock, TX Kayla Olmsted and 
Luke of Cavalier, ND; 2 grandsons, Jerod Horchem and Megan of Ransom, KS
 and Charlie Ingraham of Lubbock, TX;&nbsp; 2&nbsp; great granddaughters, Praylee 
Horchem and Mercedes Horchem,&nbsp; 4 great grandsons. Trigger Horchem, 
Benjamin Olmstead, Leif Olmestead, and Theodore Olmstead. Also, an 
honorary son, Henrik Frokjaer-Jensen and his wife Lotte Asminn of 
Denmark. Ronald Dean Horchem

Frank Donald “Don” Colborn was born November 14, 1927, in Kiowa, 
Kansas. He was one of eight sons of Frank F. and Grace (Van Huss) 
Colborn. He died at Salina Regional Hospital, November 8, 2021, six days
 before his 94th birthday.

Don attended grade schools in Barber County and graduated from 
Medicine Lodge (Kansas) High School in 1946. He joined the United States
 Navy and spent two years in service including a one year posting in 
Pearl Harbor. After returning home to Thayer, Kansas, Don worked in a 
variety of positions until 1952, when he enrolled at Chanute Junior 
College. He later attended Emporia State University (ESU), earning the 
B.S. and M.S. in English Education.

On March 12, 1954, Don married Peggy Martin in Emporia, Kansas. To this union, seven children were born.

Don taught at Newton Junior and Senior High Schools for 30 years, 
during which time he served as junior high school drama coach, speech 
and English instructor, and sponsor of many extra-curricular youth 
groups. He was a member of the National Education Association (NEA), 
Kansas branch of the NEA (KNEA), and served as president and treasurer 
of Newton branch of the KNEA.

Don was a member of the U.S. National Guard for three years. He spent
 his summers fulfilling his Guard duties, and as a mechanic with Dey 
Farm Supply, as well as continuing graduate education at ESU. He also 
found time to work closely with his children in all their activities; 
taking them fishing and camping, teaching them to play tennis, and 
serving as a Scoutmaster and Little League baseball coach.

While in Newton, Don was baptized into the Catholic Church and took 
an active role in Knights of Columbus and as a church lector. He also 
volunteered in the Catholic Youth Organization drama activities.

In 1984, the Colborns moved to Colby, Kansas. Don resumed his 
teaching career at Oakley High School, where he taught English and 
sponsored yearbook for seven years.

After his retirement in 1992, the Colborns spent two years traveling 
throughout the United States and spending time with their extended 
families, after which they resettled in Solomon, Kansas, where Don was 
able to indulge in full-time gardening, his lifelong hobby, as well as 
playing cards with friends.

Don was preceded in death by his eldest son, Alan, his parents, one 
sister, Darlene, and six brothers: Robert, Harold, Lester, Russell, 
Kenneth and Jerry; and his Godparents, Lee and May Hensler. He is 
survived by his spouse Peg of the home; four sons - Martin (Roxann), 
Newton; Michael (Kathleen), Newton; Richard, Salina; David (Cristi), 
Cleveland, West Virginia; two daughters: Cathy (William) Summers of 
Albany, Oregon; Amy (Richard) Vigil, Lynchburg, Virginia; 12 
grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one 
brother Jack (Charlott) of Chanute, Kansas; many cousins, nieces and 
nephews, a host of friends as well as thousands of former students, 
fellow teachers and professional associates.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate 
Conception Church in Solomon on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 10:00 AM;
 Father John Wolesky, officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary 
Cemetery, Solomon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alan J. 
Colborn Memorial at Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton, KS; 
Immaculate Conception Church in Solomon; or St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Melvin Dale Kvasnicka

Edward W. "Ed" Simon, age 65, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 
2021, at his home in Wakefield, Kansas surrounded by family. He was born
 on September 12, 1956, in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Robert L. and 
Mary L. (Berning) Simon. Ed was a lifetime resident of Marienthal, 
Kansas, until he and Jana retired and moved to Wakefield, Kansas in July
 2021.

Ed attended St. Mary Grade School, Wichita County High School 
graduating in 1974 and Dodge City Community College, attaining an 
Associate Degree.

He married Jana Mae Dierks on July 17, 1976, in Leoti, KS. They had 
four children - Paul Simon, Amber Stevens, a Rainbow Baby and AJ Simon. 
Ed had eight much loved grandchildren, who called him Papa. Rorric and 
Brenton Simon, Scott City, KS, Emily, Caden, Keira and Kyler Stevens, 
Emporia, KS and Zane and Liam Simon, Wakefield, KS.&nbsp;

He was a farmer and rancher, auctioneer, AHA 1st Aid &amp; CPR 
Instructor, volunteer AEMT for Leoti EMS, substitute mail carrier, AEMT 
for Midwest Medical Transport and past USD #467 School Board member and 
recently the Director of Building, Grounds and Transportation at USD 
#467.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 
Council #2930, and Assembly #2567 Bishop John B. Franz 4th Degree of 
Marienthal, KS.

He was of great help to the Wichita County community as his AEMT 
skills and concern for all people made him an excellent first responder.
 He was “Marienthal 1” responder and would state, “I am just along for 
the ride”. He was known as a friend and helper to all he met, never 
knowing a stranger. If Ed didn’t have what you needed in his pickup, 
well then you didn’t need it. Many children will remember him as the 
mailman that left treats in the mailbox. Other kids will remember him 
for the popsicles he gave away on parade day. When he started working at
 USD #467, the children and parents alike looked for Papa Ed as he made 
friends easily and would help them all. If anyone tried to thank Ed, 
they would always hear, “Why, I didn’t do anything.” Ed enjoyed having a
 cold red beer with his friends and family at the Blue Bird or Iron 
Horse.

Survivors include his Wife - Jana Simon of Wakefield, Paul &amp; 
Jacque Simon of Scott City, Amber &amp; Chris Stevens of Emporia, and AJ
 &amp; Kim Simon of Wakefield and eight Grandchildren. Three Sisters - 
Jean Wells of Marienthal, Diana &amp; Todd Long of Leoti, Connie &amp; 
Darren McRae of Leoti.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Father and Mother-in-Law, 
Clair and Iona Dierks, Brother-in-Laws - Steve Wells, Mark Dierks,

Edward W. 'Ed' Simon

Donald Dean Schoonover, 79, passed away at the University of Kansas 
Medical Center in Kansas City, KS on the morning of Saturday, November 
6, 2021.

Don was born in Dodge City, KS on October 22, 1942, the first of four
 children to Homer and Lavergne (Ingals) Schoonover, of Kingsdown, KS. 
He graduated from Ford High School, Ford, KS in 1960. While in school, 
Don was a varsity letterman in football, basketball, and track. After 
graduating high school, he went on to study architecture at Kansas State
 University, graduating with a degree in Business in 1965.

After graduation, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve (Electronics Maintenance Company Maintenance Battalion 4th
 Marine Division) and attended basic training at Camp Pendleton, CA. Don
 began his career in the aerospace industry with the Boeing Company in 
Wichita and later in Seattle, WA where he met Mary Catharine (Cathy) 
Park. They were married at Eastminister Presbyterian Church in Wichita, 
KS.

Don and Cathy lived in Arlington, TX and Woodbridge, VA before 
returning home to Kansas to be closer to family. In 1978, Don moved to 
Larned, KS where he formed the irrigation company, Ag Systems, Inc. with
 his brother Kent, serving farmers throughout western Kansas for nearly 
40 years.

Growing up on a farm, Don valued honesty, integrity, hard work, and 
most of all he loved people. When not at “the shop," Don loved spending 
time with his four children and six grandchildren, whether on yearly 
snowmobiling trips to Colorado, cheering on his K-State Wildcats, or 
going to see his grandkids’ sporting events. Don and Cathy loved 
spending time with their three dogs and working on the house, stopping 
only to enjoy the occasional margarita together.

Don and Cathy had four children, David of Larned, Michelle (Mike) 
Daniel of Great Bend, Ashley (Scott) Taylor of Dodge City, and Jason of 
Nashville, TN along with six grandchildren, Dylan Kent, Michael Warren, 
Brady and Laura Daniel, and Dawson and Addisyn Taylor. Don is survived 
by his brother Kent (Robyn) of Littleton, CO, sister-in-law, Leslie 
Schoonover of Dodge City, and brother-in-law, Alan Steele of Ford. Don 
is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Lavergne Schoonover, his 
brother Rod Schoonover, and his sister Linda Steele.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 12, 
2021, at the Presbyterian Church in Kingsdown, KS with Pastor Suzie Woods
 presiding. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on 
Thursday, November 11, 2021, at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned, KS with 
family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Ford 
Cemetery, Ford, KS with military graveside rites.

Donald Dean Schoonover

Dorothy Ann Weber was born December 8, 
1933, in Ellis County to John and Regina Augustine (Schuster).&nbsp; She 
peacefully left this world on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at age 87. &nbsp;

She joined Leonard “Red” Weber in 
marriage on April 30, 1951. &nbsp;Together they raised six children, two 
girls and four boys.&nbsp; Throughout the ensuing years, while she 
occasionally held various jobs outside the home, her constant commitment
 was to her family and close friends. She loved to make sure town folk 
made it to the places they needed to go by giving them a lift in her 
van—frequently stopping at the donut shop to grab a sweet treat on the 
way. &nbsp;She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Ellis, Daughters
 of Isabella and Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary.

Card and dice games were staples at the
 Weber household. Grandkids learned to count by dealing cards, melding 
and keeping score. Dorothy always loved a friendly, or better yet 
competitive, game of pinochle, durock or dice. She always seemed to have
 endless energy, often staying busy while playing games by keeping 
everyone’s snack bowls topped off with her amazing homemade party mix 
and Grandpa’s favorite peanut M&amp;M’s.

Five of her children, Donna 
Schoenthaler (Doug), Ellis; Patti Unrein (Joe), Hays; Jerry Weber 
(Joan), Kansas City; Ed Weber (Charlene), Ellis; Curtis Weber (Mary 
Kay), Ellis; and one daughter-in-law, Elaine Weber, Wakeeney continue to
 cherish her memory. There are 16 grandchildren and 31 
great-grandchildren to carry on her love of family and traditions.&nbsp; 
Betty Younger (Richard) Hays is Dorothy’s sole surviving sibling.

Dorothy and Leonard shared 64 years of 
marriage, until his passing May 27, 2015.&nbsp; Her parents, son William 
(Bill) Weber, granddaughter Erin Weber and great-grandsons, Peyton Weber
 and Jonah Schmidtberger preceded her to Heaven. &nbsp;Also there to welcome 
her are five sisters, Mary Grecian (Don), Theresa Scheck (Andy), infant 
sister Rosie and nine brothers, Philip (Clara), Joe, Eddie (Alberta), 
Paul (Stella), Matthew (Verna), Johnny (Delores) Clarence (Maddy),

at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis from 9:00 AM until service time.

Funeral Services will begin 10:00 AM.

 </figure>Dorothy Ann Weber was born December 8, 
1933, in Ellis County to John and Regina Augustine (Schuster).&nbsp; She 
peacefully left this world on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at age 87. &nbsp;She joined Leonard “Red” Weber in 
marriage on April 30, 1951. &nbsp;Together they raised six children, two 
girls and four boys.&nbsp; Throughout the ensuing years, while she 
occasionally held various jobs outside the home, her constant commitment
 was to her family and close friends. She loved to make sure town folk 
made it to the places they needed to go by giving them a lift in her 
van—frequently stopping at the donut shop to grab a sweet treat on the 
way. &nbsp;She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Ellis, Daughters
 of Isabella and Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary.Card and dice games were staples at the
 Weber household. Grandkids learned to count by dealing cards, melding 
and keeping score. Dorothy always loved a friendly, or better yet 
competitive, game of pinochle, durock or dice. She always seemed to have
 endless energy, often staying busy while playing games by keeping 
everyone’s snack bowls topped off with her amazing homemade party mix 
and Grandpa’s favorite peanut M&amp;M’s.Five of her children, Donna 
Schoenthaler (Doug), Ellis; Patti Unrein (Joe), Hays; Jerry Weber 
(Joan), Kansas City; Ed Weber (Charlene), Ellis; Curtis Weber (Mary 
Kay), Ellis; and one daughter-in-law, Elaine Weber, Wakeeney continue to
 cherish her memory. There are 16 grandchildren and 31 
great-grandchildren to carry on her love of family and traditions.&nbsp; 
Betty Younger (Richard) Hays is Dorothy’s sole surviving sibling.Dorothy and Leonard shared 64 years of 
marriage, until his passing May 27, 2015.&nbsp; Her parents, son William 
(Bill) Weber, granddaughter Erin Weber and great-grandsons, Peyton Weber
 and Jonah Schmidtberger preceded her to Heaven. &nbsp;Also there to welcome 
her are five sisters, Mary Grecian (Don), Theresa Scheck (Andy), infant 
sister Rosie and nine brothers, Philip (Clara), Joe, Eddie (Alberta), 
Paul (Stella), Matthew (Verna), Johnny (Delores) Clarence (Maddy),

Sandra “Sue” Goodson, 81, died Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Minneola Long Term Care.

She was born December 17, 1939, at McDonald, Kansas, the daughter of 
William “Bill” Levi and Virginia (Erikson) Dungan.&nbsp; She moved to 
Minneola from Yuma, Arizona.&nbsp; She worked as a dog groomer and also 
worked at Minneola Long Term Care in housekeeping for 11 years. She 
enjoyed antiques and going to estate sales as well as collecting salt 
and pepper shakers.

Survivors include: her son, Allen Goodson, Minneola; her daughter, 
Rhonda Goodson Ramiro and husband Charles, Phoenix, Arizona; and 
numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Private family services will be held at a later date.&nbsp; There will be no public viewing as cremation has taken place.

Edward J. Werth, age 93, of Park, Kansas, passed away November 6, 2021, at Gove County Medical Center in Quinter, Kansas. He was born January 30, 1928, to Thomas and Bertha (Kreutzer) Werth. Edward was united in marriage to the love of his life, Cordula Ritter, on May 4, 1948, in Leoville, Kansas. They were married for 73 and a half years. What a great example and something to be proud of. 

To this union were born nine children, eight of whom survive Edward. Elaine (LaVern) Schneider of Albert, Kansas, Kathleen (Bob) Reinert of Salina, Kansas, Evelyn Whitaker of Moberly, Missouri, Janette (Tom) Walters of Emporia, Kansas, James (Jeanne) Werth of Pueblo West, Colorado, Janice (Lance) Koland of Newton, Kansas, David (Lori) Werth of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Karla (Chris) Hecker of Hays, Kansas. He also leaves to mourn four sisters and one brother: Celestina (Dale) Moran, Mary Kerns, Bertha Haas, Caroline (Don) Witte, and John Werth; sister-in-law Elaine Werth; 29 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edward was a farmer and stockman who raised registered Hereford cattle and was a member of both the American and Kansas Hereford Associations. He was also a member of the Kansas Farmer’s Union and the Knights of Columbus. Upon retirement, he spent many hours a day working on woodworking projects, which he sold at craft shows and enjoyed gifting to his children.

One of Edward’s greatest joys, and something he looked forward to every day, was getting in his wheelchair and going outside for a cigar. If he could, he would try to convince you that he hadn’t already had one, to go get another one.

Edward was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Harvey; his parents; granddaughter Emily Werth; great-grandson Joshua Drew; brothers Jerome, George, Julian, and Lawrence; sisters Bertha (in infancy), Virginia Knoll, and Germaine Werth; brothers-in-law Paul Kisslinger, Andy Knoll, and Bill Kerns; sisters-in-law Lee Werth, Rosemary Werth, and Cecilia Werth.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter, with rosary to follow.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, November 11, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Park, with Father James Thomas as celebrant. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
