Robert 'Bob' Schlyer

Robert “Bob” Schlyer, age 95, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Thursday, November 18, 2021, in Hays. He was born December 5, 1925, in Hays, Kansas to Albert and Clara (Denning) Schlyer. 

At the age of 18, Bob joined the US Navy where he served during WWII in the Pacific Theatre including the battle of Iwo Jima. When Bob returned from serving his country, he married Dolores E. (Dreiling) on September 3, 1947, in Hays. She preceded him in death on January 29, 2013.

Bob was a longtime wine and spirits salesman for State Distributors of Hays. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Hays VFW Post 9076. He was an avid bowler and fisherman as well as a dog lover.

He is survived by two sons, Butch Schlyer (Mary) of Hays and Skip Schlyer (Nancy) of Hays; seven grandchildren, Robin Krenzel (Troy), Amanda Schlyer (Adam Peters), Bret Schlyer (Stacy), Jaime Cox (Brent), Kirby Schlyer (Meliah), Heather Wooldridge (Seth Blume) and Nick Schlyer as well as nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Pamela Diehl; two brothers, Floyd and Jay Schlyer and three sisters, Shirley Manke, Wilma Brewer and Laura Seib.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Monday, November 22, 2021, at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine. Burial with military honors courtesy of the Hays VFW Honor guard will follow services in St. Joseph cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday 4 PM – 7 PM and Monday 9 AM until service time all at the funeral chapel.

A combined parish vigil and rosary service will be Sunday at 7 PM at the funeral chapel.
