DOWNS — Edward Carl, 81, passed away February 24, 2022.  He was born November 15, 1940, in Beloit, KS, the son of Nicholas and Irene (Slipke) Carl.

He was the retired owner/operator of Fast Eddies Express trucking company.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy, in 1977 and grandson, Grady Carl, in 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Darla of the home; sons and daughters: Gary Carl (Carla) of Glen Elder, Lori Kugler (Jim Nylund) of Smith Center, Joya Schroeder of Tipton, Mike Williams (Angi) of Marysville, Kent Williams of Parker, CO; 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; brother, Bob Carl of Tulare, CA; sisters, Margaret Komp of Indianapolis, IN and Loretta Brand of Colwich.

Funeral service will be held Monday, February 28, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cawker City. Visitation will be held Sunday evening, February 27th, at 6-8:00 p.m. at the church with family present.

Edward Carl

Ronald Gierhart, 62, of Quinter, KS, died Wednesday, February 23, 2022. 
Ron was born March 11, 1959, in Fort Worth Texas, to Judy Tolson. He 
lived in Fort Worth with his mother and brother Kenny until his mother 
married Jim Gierhart. They then moved to Colorado. Where he lived and 
grew up with his family, including his two new siblings, Morris and 
Charlyn, until he was eighteen. He participated and excelled in High 
School Rodeo throughout his high school years having numerous 
Championship buckles and trophies. He graduated from Florence High 
School in 1977. 
Ron was married on June 4, 1978, and this union was blessed with two 
children, Roy and Kari. He enjoyed teaching and coaching Roy when he 
decided to rodeo. He later loved having Roy help around the property 
saying sometimes you just need a son’s help. Ron spent many joyous hours
 hunting with Roy and his granddaughter Abby and purchased her a 22 
rifle for Christmas. 
Ron moved to Benkelman, NE where he met the love of his life, Jamie. 
They were married May 30, 2015. He resided south of Benkelman NE with 
Jamie and his stepdaughters, Harlee and Mary, until he and Jamie 
purchased a small property near Quinter KS. Ron was living on this 
property until his passing. 
During his life, Ron worked as a crane operator and an iron worker which
 took him all over the United States. He was given the opportunity to be
 involved in the work at the Royal Gorge. He also worked as a Cowhand at
 several ranches, and feedlots during his life. One of his favorites was
 the Snake Creek ranch in Nebraska. When he moved to Quinter he started 
seasonal work for Jeremy Reidel, then took a full-time job with Kirk 
Zerr. He continued to help Jeremy when needed, often trading hay for 
labor. 
Jeremy and Ron once needed to doctor some cattle and took off across the
 pasture with a loaded dart gun on an ATV, it all worked out okay, but 
Jamie refused to have anything to do with the endeavor knowing that 
someone other than the cattle would end up tranquilized. 
He enjoyed grilling for his family and friends and was very accomplished
 at smoking meat for parties and celebrations. He enjoyed watching the 
girls show their horses and helped Jamie repair a small cart when she 
decided they needed to have a donkey cart. 
He loved working with his small herd of beef cattle, even when Jamie 
introduced spots when they were all supposed to be black. He battled to 
keep the fence up when they decided the grass was greener on the other 
side. He enjoyed helping Jamie with her little herd of dairy cattle, 
even though he mocked her unceasingly about them. 
He took great joy in teaching his nieces Elizabeth and Victoria to 
improve their riding and helping them show cattle at the Gove County 
Fair. He loved showing his niece Charlotte around the farm, letting her 
help with the new calves and riding the old rescue Donkey. He found a 
partner in Harlee, working side by side on fencing, and the health care 
of the animals. Ron and his stepdaughter Mary, while not always seeing 
eye to eye, enjoyed cutting wood for the fire fishing and camping when 
time allowed. 
Ron is survived by his wife Jamie; step daughters Harlee and Mary; his 
son Roy and granddaughter Abby, of Benkelman, NE; daughter Kari and 
numerous other family and friends.

Judith Kay (Ladd) Sherry

John J. Long, 51, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at his home in rural Smith Center. 
 John was born on August 27, 1970, in Topeka, KS, the son of William 
and Dorothy (Grothaus) Long.&nbsp; On June 19, 1993, he married Gina M. 
Morgan in Smith Center, KS, to this union they were blessed with three 
daughters, Rebecca LeaAnne, Kaitlynne Abigail and Bre`Oona Marie. 
 He was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Kay Long, paternal 
grandparents, Jay &amp; Margaret (Cunningham) Long and maternal 
grandparents, John &amp; Goldie (Sims) Grothaus. John is 
survived by his parents, Bill &amp; Dorothy Long of Smith Center; wife 
Gina Long of Smith Center; three daughters, Rebecca (Michael F.) 
Favinger and Kaitie (Cody R. Anschutz) Long all of Hays and Oona Long of
 Smith Center; one brother Mark Long of Smith Center; one sister Lisa 
Jaylene Long of St. Joseph, MO; three grandchildren and one on the way, 
Kathleen, Lucas and Samuel. A celebration 
of John's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2022, at

Pastor Dennis Lambert officiating. There will not be a public visitation
 as cremation was chosen.&nbsp; Inurnment will take place in Fairview 
Cemetery, Smith Center, KS at a later date.&nbsp;

James R. 'Mick' McVey

Trevor Thomas Coulson, 22, passed away February 21, 2022, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born October 1, 1999, in Hays, the son of Shawn Coulson and Traci L. Morelock Coulson.

A lifetime area resident, he was a roofer with Roofmasters, Hays. He was of the Christian faith and did missionary work.

Survivors include: father, Shawn Coulson, Ransom; mother, Traci 
Coulson, Larned; brother, Logan Coulson, Larned; sister, Kala (Steven) 
Schroer, Hays; twin sister, Brook Coulson and fiancé Stanly, Topeka; 
son, Noah Escarcega; and grandfather, Tom (Elaine) Coulson, Haysville.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sonya Coulson, Jim and Ruth Morelock, Grandma Jo and Grandpa Rollin Lohmeyer.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 
Beckwith Mortuary, Larned with Pastor Dave Buller presiding. Visitation 
will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2022, at Beckwith

 on November 20, 1943, in Smith Center to Curtis Arlo and Frances Lucille 
(Thompson) Wellman. Patty moved to Oakley in August of 1994 with 
DSNWK services.&nbsp; She lived independently and worked at Farmers State 
Bank in Oakley.&nbsp; Patty enjoyed community activities, eating out, coffee 
with friends and community members.&nbsp; Patty retired in July 2008 and 
moved from Oakley in 2012. Patty liked to tease and joke with Marinna 
and other friends.&nbsp; She enjoyed music and dancing.&nbsp; We will miss her 
ornery happy smiles. She was preceded in death by her parents, 
Curtis and Frances, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.&nbsp; Patty is 
survived by several cousins. A visitation will be from 5:00 to

Patricia Elaine Wellman

John Joseph Kohlrus, 93, Hays, died Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at Brookdale of Hays.

He was born November 7, 1928, in Ellis, 
the son of Karl and Anna (Augustine) Kohlrus.&nbsp; From 1951 to 1953, he was
 with the 1st Battalion 7th Division 31st Infantry in the United States 
Army during the Korean War.&nbsp; On February 4, 1954, he was united in 
marriage to Marietta Marie Leiker and they were married for over 45 
years before she preceded him in death on December 20, 1999.&nbsp; His 
careers included working as an oilfield driller for many years and then 
as a custodian and later a supervisor at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; He
 was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and was a 
lifetime member of the VFW. &nbsp;John loved the outdoors, watching TV 
westerns, and gardening, but his true passion was fishing, and spending 
time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons: Tim Kohlrus
 and wife Shelly and Terry Kohlrus and wife Linda, all of Ellis, a 
daughter: Mary Detrixhe and husband Gene of Russell, a brother: Robert 
Kohlrus and wife Van of Germantown Hills, IL, two sisters: Martha Franz 
and husband Maurice of Washington, IL and Jeannie Thorp of Tremont, IL, 
three sisters-in-law: Mary Margaret Kohlrus of Overland Park, Helen 
Kohlrus of Renton, WA, and Linde Kohlrus of Wasilla, AK, six 
grandchildren: Miles Detrixhe, Tasha Keathley-Helms and husband Derek, 
Rena Detrixhe, Travis Kohlrus and wife Susie, Jennifer Sproul and 
husband Chad, and Tim Kohlrus Jr. and wife Debbie, 11 great 
grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, wife Marietta, infant children: Michelle, John, Thomas, and 
Bradley Kohlrus, four brothers: Pete, Jake, Bill, and Frank Kohlrus, and
 three sisters: Marie Alberssen, Rali Ketterman, and Eleanor 
Sekavec-Cox.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
1:00 pm on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic 
Church, with Fr. Elias Chinzara officiating.&nbsp; Burial with military 
honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in St. Joseph 
Cemetery.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until service
 time at the church.&nbsp;

John Joseph Kohlrus

Michael H. “Mike” Mullen was born on November 7, 1947, in 
Phillipsburg, Kansas, the youngest of seven children born to Joseph James
 and Goldie Pauline (Hurlbert) Mullen.&nbsp; He passed away on Sunday, 
February 13th, 2022, at his home in Topeka, KS at the age of 74.

Mike was raised in Glade, KS and later moved to Topeka.&nbsp;

Mike was a Licensed Medical Health Technician and worked a number of 
years in Norton, KS and Topeka, KS.&nbsp; He later worked at Engrophs Popcorn
 Factory in Topeka.

siblings Lloyd, Janice Helwick, Charles, Johnny, and Sharon; and his 
grandparents.

Survivors include his two daughters Jan Upshaw of Hutchinson, KS and 
Marcia Laird of Salina, KS; sister Patty Moore of Speed, KS; numerous 
Nieces and Nephews that he cherished dearly; as well as his friends in 
Topeka.

Cremation was planned.&nbsp; A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Albert Clifford Beougher, age 71, of Gove, passed away on February 
19, 2022, at his home.&nbsp; Cliff was born on October 27, 1950, in Colby to 
Harold Jesse and Eva Mae (Putman) Beougher.

Cliff was a farmer and rancher in the Gove, Grinnell, and Campus area and more information will follow.

Cliff is survived by his son, Jesse, of the home; four sisters:&nbsp; 
Sonya Bishop and Coleen Schreiner of Grand Junction, CO, Vicki Anway of

Alvina "Vickie" Smith, age 90, entered into rest Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022,
 at her residence at Wheatridge Apartments in Atwood, KS. She was born 
June 3, 1931 at her family farm near Herndon, KS, in Rawlins County, the
 fifth child of Otto and Elizabeth (Kirchner) Sattler. She was baptized 
into the Catholic Faith and remained Catholic until death. She graduated
 from Herndon High School in 1949. 
On Sept. 12, 1950, she married Ernest J. Riepl and to this union they 
were blessed with 3 children: Diana, Becky and Allen. Ernest died Dec. 
4, 1972. On June 4, 1976 she married Dan Smith. Dan died March 25, 2008.
 She outlived 2 husbands and a son. 
Vickie enjoyed living on the farm, raising chickens, milking cows, 
canning, baking, quilting, sewing and many other housewife duties. She 
made over 500 quilts. She always arranged to have the baby chickens 
ready to butcher the first day after school was out! The town kids got 
to go to the swimming pool. Vickie's kids got to butcher chickens and 
hang the clothes out on the clothesline. However, the town kids probably
 didn't have the blessing of getting off the school bus to the smell of 
fresh baked bread that the butter just melted on and was "oh so good!" 
Vickie kept very active with the Koffee Klatch Hobby Club for many 
years. She was a member of the Chirsitan Mothers Altar Society both at 
St. John's Church and Sacred Heart in Atwood. She helped make many 
rosaries for the Rosary Makers. She waited tables at the Buffalo 
Restaurant and Chris's Cafe and helped at the Snack Shack. She also 
helped the Scrappy Gals tie many quilts over the years. 
Preceding her in death were her parents; her two husbands; sisters, 
LaVern Calhoun, Roseanna McAdams and Eleanor Romine; brothers, George 
and Kenny Sattler; son Allen Riepl; niece Jeannie Jobs; nephew Bobby 
McAdams and son-in-law Leon Lang. 
Survivors include daughters, Diana (Mike) Tongish and Becky R. Lang, all
 of Atwood; 2 grandsons, (She was Grandma Giggles to them) Isaah (Betsy)
 Lang of Wichita, KS and Johnny (Jessica) Lang of Hays, KS; 4 great

Richard Alfred Younger, 93, of Hays, Kansas passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2022, in Hays. He was born August 13, 1928, in Antonino, Kansas, to Peter and Catherine (Pfannenstiel) Younger. Richard graduated from Hays High in 1946 and from Fort Hays State University. He married Betty Jean Augustine October 17, 1953, at St. Mary’s Church in Ellis, Kansas. Richard worked as a paint chemist in Detroit after his graduation from Fort Hays and served in the United States Air Force. He eventually ended up in Ellis with his family where he owned the Ellis Door Shop and also sold paint out of the same store. Richard was a gifted carpenter homebuilder having built homes in Ellis and Hays. He enjoyed making cabinets and furniture as well as wood crafts. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid sports fan especially the Royals, Chiefs and KU Jayhawks. Richard and Betty were members of the Sunflower Polka Club for 30 years and genuinely enjoyed attending dances with family and friends. Richard was a past member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis and a current member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays and a 4th degree Ellis Knights of Columbus member. Richard is survived by his wife, Betty Jean, Hays; two sons, Gregory Younger, Houston, TX, Terrance (Janice) Younger, Frisco, TX; five daughters Sylvia (Charles) Kinderknecht, Ellis, Joyce (Ken) Creek, Pottsboro, TX, Rosemary (Randall) Johnson, Ellis, Mary (Russell) Thom, Hays, Christine (Allen) Lang, Victoria; one brother, Francis Younger, Hays; and one sister, Mary Dreiling, Hays; 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. &nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Allen Younger; a grandson, Jarret Johnson; six brothers, Severin, Victor, Alvin, Joe, Eddie, and Norman; and a sister Cora Sawazhki.&nbsp; Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, February 28, 2022, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Hays.&nbsp; Visitation will be Monday 10:00 AM until service time at the church. Doris Joan “Jo” Pruitt, age 92, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2022, with family by her side. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

Doris was born on December 24, 1929, in Phillips County to Warren 
Lemuel and Nora Helen (Chance) VanEaton. She enjoyed time spent with two
 big brothers, and later, a younger sister.

Left to celebrate her life include daughters Jolene Deisher of 
Woodward, Oklahoma, Melanie Pruitt-Tillberg (Michael) of Salina, Kansas;
 sister Carmen Rice of Kensington, Kansas; and many nieces &amp; 
nephews.

Doris loved the name of Grandma and was thrilled to be a Grandma to 
five: Jennifer (Jeff), Tammy (Mark), Ben, Abe, and Chase (Kalina).

She was so proud to be a Great-Grandma to seven: Jeremy, Jentry, Lauren, Landon, Seth, Wyatt, and Hunter.

Doris felt especially blessed to be a Great-Great-Grandma to four: Emma, Ben, Aubrey, and Syrus,

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her spouse, Rollo Wayne 
“R.W.” Pruitt; her son, Charles “Chuck” Pruitt; son-in-law, Doug 
Deisher; and brothers, Merton VanEaton &amp; Burton “Herb” VanEaton.

Doris is a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She loved to cook for her 
family, play cards, and she made many treasured patchwork blankets for 
her family and friends.

The family requests that memorials be made to Service Dogs for Wounded Warriors, Salina Animal Services, and Hospice of Salina.

Funeral services for Doris will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 28, 
2022, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 255 South 7th St., Salina. Burial will be in

Steven Patrick Boltin, 54, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Saturday,&nbsp;February&nbsp;19, 2022, at the Russell Regional Hospital after a&nbsp;courageous&nbsp;battle with cancer.

Steve was born July 4, 1967, in St. Louis County, Missouri. He was one&nbsp;of two&nbsp;sons born to Arthur and Maryln Lee&nbsp;(Kaufman) Boltin. He grew up in St. Charles, Missouri, until the age of&nbsp;12 when his family&nbsp;moved to&nbsp;Bunker Hill, Kansas. He graduated from Russell High School.

Steve served his country in the U.S. Marines&nbsp;after high school. After his tour of duty, he&nbsp;returned to Russell and attended Barton County Community College where he&nbsp;obtained a EMS Degree.

Steve was united in marriage to Melody Kay Vandergon on May 10, 1997, at the&nbsp;park in Bunker Hill. &nbsp;This union was&nbsp;blessed with three sons; Malachai, Isaac and Ezekial. &nbsp;They made their home in Russell.

Steve was a Paramedic for Russell County for 30 years and the&nbsp;Russell County Deputy Coroner for 20 years before his retirement in&nbsp;2021 due to his health. &nbsp;In his spare&nbsp;time, he enjoyed bowling, woodworking, reading&nbsp;sci-fi fantasy novels&nbsp;and helping the people of Russell County.

Steve’s surviving family include his wife of 24 years, Melody of the home; sons, Malachai Boltin of Russell, Kansas, Isaac Boltin of Camp Pendelton, California and Ezekial Boltin of Russell, Kansas; parents, Art and Maryln Boltin of Bunker Hill, Kansas; and brother, Shawn Boltin (Rosie) of Black Forest, Colorado. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by&nbsp;his maternal and paternal grandparents.

A&nbsp;Gathering&nbsp;Service&nbsp;will be held&nbsp;at 5:30 P.M. at Fossil Lake with a Viking Funeral&nbsp;at&nbsp;sunset.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cremation has taken place. &nbsp;A Memorial has been&nbsp;established&nbsp;with Team EMS. &nbsp;Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in&nbsp;charge of these arrangements.

Mary Elizabeth (Bien) Banks, 89, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, February 20, 2022, at Main Street Manor of Russell.

Mary was born August 19, 1932, in Sabetha, Kansas.&nbsp; She was the 
daughter of Elmer and Helen (Slater) Bien.&nbsp; She grew up in Sabetha and 
graduated from Sabetha High School.&nbsp; While working at the Sabetha 
Theater as an usher she met Paul Francis Banks.&nbsp; They were united in 
marriage on January 8, 1952, in Fidelity, Kansas, at the St. Augustine 
Catholic Church. &nbsp;This union was blessed with nine children: Deborah, 
Tim, Robert, Patricia, David, Phyllis, Carol, Duane and Doug. Together 
Paul and Mary worked at the Sabetha Seed Plant for a short time and Mary
 then was a devoted Homemaker.&nbsp; They moved their family to Russell, 
Kansas in 1967, where she continued being a Homemaker as well as a 
babysitter and later a Daycare Service.

Mary was an active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the 
Ladies Church Guild.&nbsp; She also was a member of the Russell V.F.W. Ladies
 Auxiliary.&nbsp; Paul and Mary both had a passion for square dancing, being 
members of the Russell Crosstrailers and the Shoot Stars of Hays, and 
loved traveling to dances and conventions.&nbsp; She also enjoyed reading, 
especially Christian Romance novels.

Mary’s surviving family include her four daughters, Deborah Kreutzer 
(Allen) of Lawrence, Kansas, Patricia Mead (Mark) of Russell, Kansas, 
Phyllis Billinger (Jeff) of Russell, Kansas and Carol Pummell (James) of
 Sabina, Ohio; five sons, Tim Banks of Russell, Kansas, Robert Banks of 
Hays, Kansas, David Banks (Mel) of Russell, Kansas, Duane Banks 
(Kathleen) of Russell, Kansas and Doug Banks (Michelle) of Russell, 
Kansas; 34 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren and 8 great-great 
grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul on November 
24, 2007; three sisters, Louise Simmon, Barbara Keesey and Nellie Pearl 
Bien; four brothers, Fred Bien, George Bien, Glen Bien and Ralph Bein; 
two grandchildren, Sean Banks and Sierra Banks; and a great grandson 
Carter Leones.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, 
February 26, 2022, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church in

Nathella Ilene Jeffery, 86, passed away on February 21, 2022, at the 
Cedar Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas. She was born on 
December 16, 1935, in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, the daughter of Gay 
and Ilene (Rosenburger) McLaughlin.

Nathella was an Administrative Assistant for B and B Advertising in 
Scott City, Kansas, for over 40 years. She was a member of the United 
Methodist Church in Scott City. &nbsp;She married Jimmie L. Jeffery on March 
24, 1956, in Merrillan, Wisconsin. He passed away on March 6, 2018.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Jimalene (Randy) Haddon of Ellinwood, 
Nathella (Calvin) Humburg of Ness City; daughter-in-law, Shawn Jeffery 
of Victoria; sister, Mary Ingersoll (Jim Cina) of New London, Wisconsin;
 6 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She was preceded in death 
by her parents, husband, son, Wade Jeffery and sister, Barb Brown.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Robert&nbsp;E. Fields, age 80, of Hays, Kansas, died Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays.

He was born September 3, 1941, in Colby, Kansas, to Floyd H. and Nina H. (Kersenbrock) Fields. He married Della (Dreiling) on May 11, 1968, at Colby, Kansas.

He worked at the Kansas State Research and Extension Center in Hays for 25 years, and he retired in 2003. &nbsp;Robert grew up on a farm at Colby and was a 1960 graduate of Colby High School. &nbsp; He served in the Kansas&nbsp;National Guard, and attended Saint JosephCatholic Church, Hays.

Survivors include his wife, Della Fields, of the home; his daughter, Melissa Reif, Plainville, KS; His brother, Gary Fields&nbsp;and wife, Janice, North Glenn, CO; his brothers-in-law, Dale Koenig, Colby, KS; Dennis Dreiling, Victoria, KS; his grandchildren, Samantha Reif, Justin Reif, and Abby Reif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Don; and his sister, Betty Koenig.&nbsp;

A celebration of Life service will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday, March 4, 2022, at&nbsp; Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22 Street, Hays, Kansas 67601 with Father Richard Daise officiating. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Longtime Goodland, KS resident Barbara Jean&nbsp;Mosbarger, 85, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022, at the Goodland Regional Medical Center in Goodland.

Barbara was born on June 16, 1936, in&nbsp;Spearville, KS, the only child of James and Wilhelmina (Warfield) Gearhart. &nbsp;She attended school in Cimarron, KS and graduated in 1954. &nbsp;She then went on and attended Kansas State University, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. &nbsp;It was there that she met her future husband Gary&nbsp;Mosbarger. &nbsp;They later were married on September 1, 1957, at the chapel on the campus of Colorado State University. &nbsp;

Barbara and Gary had two children; James Lee born in 1961, and Shari Lynn born in 1964. &nbsp;She enjoyed spending time attending all the activities that her children and grandchildren were involved with, from showing cattle and pigs in 4-H, to watching them play football, basketball and even going to wrestling tournaments. &nbsp;

Barbara was a very dedicated 4-H leader for Prairie Dale 4-H Club, and was also a 4-H cooking leader. &nbsp;She served on the Sherman County Extension Council for several years, and was a member of the Beaver Valley EHU Club. &nbsp;She&nbsp;was&nbsp;proud to be a&nbsp;farmwife;&nbsp;helping drive trucks, doing yard work, gardening and helping the guys move vehicles from field to field. &nbsp;She was also ready to serve up a hot meal when the family had called it a day.&nbsp;&nbsp;Barbara was a very special wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will truly be missed by many.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Gary&nbsp;and her sister-in-law&nbsp;and brother-in-law&nbsp;Lavaughn&nbsp;and John Glasco.

She is survived by her children; son Jim (Darla)&nbsp;Mosbarger, Shari (Terry) Taylor; four grandsons, John (Lora)&nbsp;Mosbarger,&nbsp;Jace&nbsp;(Bryn)&nbsp;Mosbarger, Ryan (Hannah) Taylor, Garrett&nbsp;Taylor&nbsp;(KamiMiller); six great grandchildren;&nbsp;Jance, Jarrett,&nbsp;Jax, Olivia, Meyer and Cole.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 10:30 AM MT at the Church of Christ in Goodland with Pastor Brent Flanders officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Vera Faye Ford passed away on February 10, 2022, at the High Plains 
Retirement Village Memory Care Unit in Lakin, Kansas from complication 
of Alzheimers. She was born on August 12, 1925, in rural Wichita County
 Kansas to Ralph G. and Elizabeth L Kiefer Riddiough. She was the oldest
 of 9 children and grew up and attended schools in the Carwood Community
 of Northwest Wichita County. She graduated from Wichita County High 
School in 1944 and immediately started work for the United States Postal
 Service in Leoti, Kansas. 
Vera married Glenn H Ford and they celebrated 61 years of marriage. 
Born to this union were Glenda Ford, Leoti, KS; William (Beverly) Ford 
of Andalusia, AL and Terri (Jeff) Ridder, Leoti, KS. Other survivors 
include two brothers – Milton (Velda) Riddiough, Scott City and Robert 
(Glenda) Riddiough, Smithville, GA; one sister – Bonnie (Ron) Weaver, 
Tumicari, NM; seven grandchildren – Silkor Schillings, Samantha 
Ratzlaff, Dustan (Mandy) Ridder, Garrett Ridder, Gage (Debbie) Ridder, 
Evan Ridder and Aaron Ridder; and six great-grandchildren – Saigen and 
Katia Schillings, Tucker Ratzlaff, Aaliyah, Joaquin and Theo Ridder. 
She was a homemaker and avid caregiver and loved her family dearly. 
The family also resided in Greeley County, Kansas, for several years 
where Vera built and ran the Tastee-Freez in Tribune, Kansas. She was 
an active member of the local VFW Auxiliary.

Vera Faye Ford

Mrs. Charlotte Janean (Owens) Vaughn, 78, entered into rest on February 15, 2022, in Augusta, Georgia.

Mrs. Vaughn was born in Great Bend, Kansas, to the late William and 
Nadene Owens of Rush Center, Kansas. She spent her childhood in Kansas 
and graduated from La Crosse High School in La Crosse, Kansas. She lived
 most of her adult life in Georgia and Florida where she worked as a 
Pharmacy Technician and met the love of her life, the late Donald 
Vaughn. She took pride in supporting soldiers and their families at Winn
 Army Community Hospital, Fort Stewart, Georgia, where she retired after
 over 20 years of federal service. After retirement, she and Don enjoyed
 spending life by the water in Astor, Florida. Here she felt led to 
continue serving the veteran community working as a Pharmacy Technician 
at the VA Medical Center in Orlando, Florida. In 2013, she retired for 
good and returned to Georgia to be closer to family in Appling.

Mrs. Vaughn was a wonderful mother, caring grandmother, and loyal 
friend. Along her journey, she met many friends and formed life-long 
relationships. She would go out of her way to help whenever or however 
needed. She enjoyed giving big hugs, going out on the boat, and cooking 
for others. But, most of all, she treasured spending time with her loved
 ones. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. 
Vaughn is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Vaughn. She is 
survived by her children Lynn (Loyd) Taylor (Scott) and Daryle Meddings 
(Michele); grandchildren Brandon Pope (Marissa), Jessica Porter (Kevin),
 Justin Meddings, and Carson Meddings; and great-grandchildren Clayton, 
Bradley, and Alexandria Porter.

Graveside service will be Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 1:00 P.M. 
at the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Terry 
Warner officiating.&nbsp; Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, 
La Crosse, Kansas.

Flowers are welcome, the family requests no plants due to travel distance.

Charlotte Janean (Owens) Vaughn

Shirley A. (Clapper) Baker, 90, of Hoxie, Kansas, passed away Saturday, 
February 19, 2022, at the Sheridan County Health Complex LTC. She was 
born November 10, 1931, in Dodge City, Kansas, to Joseph L. and Wava L. 
(Record) Clapper. Shirley grew up in Dodge City and graduated from Dodge
 City High School in 1950. After graduating, she helped her mother take 
care of her four brothers. On October 1, 1956, she married Byron Dwayne 
Baker in Dodge City, Kansas. Shirley and Byron raised their children in 
Goodland, Kansas. In 1977, they moved to Longview, Texas. In the early 
'90s, Shirley and Byron moved to Hoxie, Kansas.
 Shirley’s father trained horses, and as a young girl, Shirley helped
 her father train the horses by being a jockey. While living in 
Longview, Texas, Shirley owned and operated her own café and managed 
apartments. For many years, she did Home Interior Decorating. During her
 lifetime, she cooked for several restaurants and was a waitress. In 
Hoxie, she owned and operated SHIRLEY’S STUFF and sold her baked goods, 
especially her cinnamon rolls.
 Shirley was a good athlete and enjoyed water skiing and swimming. 
While living in Goodland, Shirley helped coach the swim team and helped 
in any way she could. When Shirley was not working, she loved being 
outdoors and enjoyed camping and fishing whenever she could. She was a 
wonderful musician and sang with the Sweet Adelines in Colby, Kansas. 
She was also an artist and did many oil paintings. Shirley had her own 
art show at the Prairie Museum of Art and History in Colby. Shirley 
enjoyed watching her grandkids participate in in all their activities 
Shirley was a member of the Hoxie Christian Church where she served as a
 deaconess and taught bible study and a lifelong member of the American 
Auxiliary. She was a great supporter of her family, and they were the 
most important people in her life.
 Shirley is survived by her sons, Roger Baker and wife Tami of Port 
Bolivar, Texas and Kirk Baker and wife Kelley of Hoxie, Kansas; daughter
 Nicolet Davis and husband William of Stratton, Colorado; brothers, 
Dennis Clapper of Hemphill, Texas and David Clapper of Hoxie, Kansas; 
fifteen grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and two 
great-great-grandchild.
 She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron Baker; parents, 
Joseph and Wava Clapper; brothers, Earl Clapper and Nicholas Clapper; 
and half-sisters, Nadine Crookshank and Phyllis Peck.
 A funeral service is planned for Friday, February 25, 2022, 10:30 
A.M., at the Hoxie Christian Church with Pastor Carl Dumler presiding. 
Visitation will be Thursday, February 24, 2022, at the Mickey-Leopold 
Funeral Home, from 1:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. with family greeting 
friends from 5:30 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to the

Shirley A. (Clapper) Baker

Lowell Don Newsom, formerly of Dalton, Mo., passed away on February 18, 2022. Lowell worked on his family farm with his beloved parents Donald and Sally Newsom.  After leaving the farm to enroll at the University of Missouri, he joined his beloved fraternity Alpha Gamma Rho and became its President in 1969. 

After graduation, he was hired by the IBM corporation in the Wichita, Kansas, branch office and covered two territories in Hays and Hutchinson. 

In 1976, he was promoted to a district manager in St. Louis covering a seven-state district with IBM and an IBM spin off company, Lexmark International for 25 years. After that, Lowell became involved in philanthropy and became his fraternity’s first Director of Development. He also what was the first Director of Development for a State wide organization, the Missouri Council of the Blind. Lowell loved the St. Louis Cardinals. He had a dear Aunt, Jessie (Coleman) Homman who led him to his Cardinals love. Later on, Lowell worked for two international companies one in Singapore and another in Calgary Canada. He lived life to the fullest and made countless many friends along the way. He is survived by his dear and only son Matthew Lowell Newsom.
