NAPA Gib's Auto Supply is celebrating its 60-year legacy as a multi-generational family-run business in Hays, continuing to serve the next generation of loyal customers.

The automotive parts store, 621 E. 13th St., celebrated its 60th anniversary with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 8.

Owner Tony Schippers said the industry has evolved since he and his brothers began their careers in La Crosse, following in their father’s footsteps.

"It's a faster-paced business than 60 years ago," he said. "We'd go down to La Crosse and help him during seasonal times, did odd and ends there."

Tony and his family have deep roots in the local automotive market, mainly through their long-time connection with NAPA Auto Parts.

After his military service, Tony's father, Gilbert Francis "Gib" Schippers, worked as a parts manager at a car dealership in Russell. In 1964, Gilbert partnered with NAPA to establish Gib's Auto Supply in Hays.

Tony and his brothers took on various tasks from an early age, gradually gaining valuable hands-on experience.

Gerald Schippers, Tony's brother, is among several family members who have worked at the auto store between Hays and LaCrosse.

"As soon as [Gerald] was old enough to come down and dust shelves, clean toilets, deliver whatever it might be, he was doing it," Tony said. "My middle brother followed, and then I followed him."

The family also ran a second NAPA store in LaCrosse from 1972 to 2019, which served as a training ground for the brothers before they moved on to the Hays location.

Gib's Auto Supply continues to have a solid connection to LaCrosse as Gerald manages outside sales and other areas in the store.

"We have a 30-mile radius. We go to Victoria, Ellis, Plainville, LaCrosse. That's our markets that we reach out to," Tony said.

Tony's son, Colby Schippers, is the third generation at Gib's Auto Supply. Now serving as the operations manager, Colby began his journey by taking on entry-level tasks, just as his father did.

Gib's Auto Supply provides automotive parts for cars and trucks, including batteries, brakes, filters, headlights, wipers, and various tools and equipment.

Tony said what sets the store apart from others in the area is the close relationships the family-owned business has built with its customers.

"It's our personal service and longevity," he said. "We're servicing customers that are second-generation customers too."

"We've had great employees through the years, excellent health that allows us to do things most businesses would have to pull in somebody else," Gerald said.

Over the past 60 years, the family navigated challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and oil-related issues but has continued to serve Hays.

"It's nice to see that you've started something and have been able to grow and expand it. Not only have customers but what we would call them friends now," Tony said.

"You sometimes wonder if you went down the right path, but after reflection, it's been rewarding," Gerald said.

NAPA Gib's Auto Supply is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

NWester: NAPA Gib's Auto Supply in Hays reflects, celebrates 60th anniversary

Fort Hays Tech | North Central is excited to announce a $750,000 grant from the Patterson Family Foundation to support the college’s new Construction Programs Building, an initiative aimed at expanding access to skilled trades education. This significant contribution will help equip the facility with essential machinery, advanced tools, equipment, classroom resources, and the latest technology to support programs in Construction Technology, Electrical Technology, Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning (PHAC), and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training.

The nearly 30,000-square-foot building will increase capacity for students entering the construction and technical trades, fields that are in high demand both locally and nationally. By supporting the addition of state-of-the-art tools and technologies, the grant will ensure that students graduate with job-ready skills necessary to excel in these critical industries.

LA CROSSE — The Rush County Historical Society and Kansas Barbed Wire Museum will be hosting the annual Old-Fashioned Christmas on Friday, Nov. 29, from 5:00-8:00 pm at the museum complex in La Crosse. Visitors can browse the five unique museums beautifully decorated for the holidays: the Historical Museum in the 19th Century Timken Depot; the Post Rock Museum, one of the seven wonders of Kansas Customs; the Nekoma Bank Museum, a restored 1916 rural bank; the Pleasant Point School Museum; and nationally recognized Kansas Barbed Wire Museum. There will be live music while visitors can enjoy hot cider, homemade cookies, roast marshmallows over an open fire, and enjoy Kansas-grown popcorn.

Santa Claus will arrive at 5:30 on the firetruck and hand out candy sacks to the kids in front of the bank museum. Kids of all ages will be treated to hot dogs, hot chocolate, chocolate milk and water “served right off the truck.”

There is a special display of antique toys in the Pleasant Point One-Room School Museum. The century-old school is a time capsule of early 20th century rural education with nearly all of its original furnishings and books. There will also be a special make and take craft project for the kids in the one-room school.

Events begin at 5:00 pm, Friday, November 29 at the museum campus on the south edge of La Crosse on West First Street. To ease congestion, visitors are asked to park north of the creek on Third Street across the bridge. Visitors can access the complex by the footbridge in the park. Persons with mobility issues are welcome to park in the museum parking lot.

La Crosse hosts annual old-fashioned Christmas

Leaves fall from branches this time of year, and so do nuts. Around here those include black walnuts, acorns, and pecans. This abundance fills winter larders of squirrels and makes messes that function as obstacle courses resulting in turned ankles. Based on a friend’s story, it also leads to squirrels playing Rambo and throwing nut bombs at humans cleaning up yards.

From past experience, I know squirrels have precise aim when they target dogs. When we lived in the country, resident tree rats filled their cheeks with our golden retriever’s kibble and sat on our back porch roof, lying in wait for him to come in for a drink or snack. As he’d refresh himself, they’d start a chirring verbal attack and then launch dog food missiles that beaned him until he ran yiping out of range. As much as we felt bad for the dog, we chuckled at these orchestrated assaults. Who knew squirrels studied artillery tactics and used them effectively? Forget robots overtaking the world. With enough nuts or dog kibble, squirrels will beat them to it.

A friend told recently shared a similar tale, only she was the squirrels’ target. A tidy housekeeper, she doesn’t like to leave whole walnuts or cracked hulls littering her porch and yard. During this time of year, she regularly cleans up the fallout from her trees, sometimes several times a day. She’s joked in the past about how her resident squirrels chirr and chatter when she works outside through spring and summer. Once fall comes, forget the verbal war--they arm themselves and move from defense to offense.

She explained how she went out to clear her porch, and deceptively cute rodents immediately threatened her. Ignoring their tirade, she proceeded to clean up both naturally fallen nuts as well as broken hulls left behind after those scolding squirrels scored tasty nut meats.

In no time, the attack involved more than scolding. As the squirrels in our yard did to our dog, sticks, leaves, and nuts pelted her. Imagine her surprise to look into now leafless branches to spy furry warriors orchestrating their assault. High ground provided an advantage, and I’d guess their aim was better than hers as well. That would be true if I were the target.

As our friend indignantly told her story, those of us sipping coffee nearly snorted it through our noses. Prior to her account, we’d discussed degrees of squirrel cuteness. I’d even planned to find a source where I could collect walnuts in order to lure a new couple into our yard to replace our lone resident squirrel that fried itself in a transformer incident last year.

At this point, our oak trees are too young to produce a winter’s supple of acorns so I rely on folks willing to part with some of theirs. After contemplating her story, I’m reconsidering. Maybe I need to content myself with local birds and bunny for my wildlife fix. I’m certain my chickens don’t want to become targets any more than I do.

MADORIN: A nutty assault

Three-day weather outlook

ELLIS — On Nov. 27 at 7:16 a.m., the Ellis Police Department received a report of a criminal threat. 

The reporting person stated that they had observed posts on a Facebook page that specifically named two Ellis community members and was concerning in nature. 

The Ellis Police Department was able to verify the existence of the post and began investigating the credibility of the threat. At 7:29 a.m., contact was made with one of the community members named in the Facebook post at their residence. 

At 7:36 a.m., while the officer was on scene gathering information and advising the community member about the post, Nathan Harwick, 43, of Ellis, showed up at the community member’s residence armed with what the officer on scene perceived to be a long metal pipe. 

Fearing for the safety of the community member and their family who were present in the house, the officer on scene drew his service weapon and began giving commands for Harwick to drop the object he was displaying in his hands. Harwick was compliant and was subsequently arrested without further incident. 

Harwick was then transported to the Ellis County Jail, where he was booked on requested charges of aggravated assault x2, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and criminal threat. No injuries were reported.

The officer on-scene later contacted the other community member who was named in the Facebook post and verified that they were unharmed.&nbsp;

I’d like to thank the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with this case. 

No other information will be released at this time.

 </figure>Ellis Police DepartmentELLIS — On Nov. 27 at 7:16 a.m., the Ellis Police Department received a report of a criminal threat. The reporting person stated that they had observed posts on a Facebook page that specifically named two Ellis community members and was concerning in nature. The Ellis Police Department was able to verify the existence of the post and began investigating the credibility of the threat. At 7:29 a.m., contact was made with one of the community members named in the Facebook post at their residence. At 7:36 a.m., while the officer was on scene gathering information and advising the community member about the post, Nathan Harwick, 43, of Ellis, showed up at the community member’s residence armed with what the officer on scene perceived to be a long metal pipe. Fearing for the safety of the community member and their family who were present in the house, the officer on scene drew his service weapon and began giving commands for Harwick to drop the object he was displaying in his hands. Harwick was compliant and was subsequently arrested without further incident. Harwick was then transported to the Ellis County Jail, where he was booked on requested charges of aggravated assault x2, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and criminal threat. No injuries were reported.The officer on-scene later contacted the other community member who was named in the Facebook post and verified that they were unharmed.&nbsp;I’d like to thank the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with this case. Hays High will be playing in the 5A KSHSAA State Championship game on Saturday. The game is hosted by Emporia State University at Welch Stadium at 7:00. It is the Indians first ever football championship game.

Eagle Media will be streaming the game with Dustin Armbruster and Matt Dumler on the call. The game can be purchased on Saturday. Those who have purchased a year long pass will be able to watch through that prior purchase.&nbsp;

A link for the purchase and to watch the game will be available Saturday morning on Hays Post.

There will be a send-off for the team on Saturday morning. The bus departs at 11:30a.m. from the Hays High School student parking lot. It will head north on Canterbury to 22nd street, then east on 22nd to I-70.&nbsp;

I received&nbsp;a&nbsp;stem cell transplant four years ago&nbsp;at KU. For ongoing treatment, I chose Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute of&nbsp;HaysMed, not KU.&nbsp;Easy decision; it was local.

Dr. Rodriguez had been keeping close tabs on me for a couple of years before the transplant became necessary.&nbsp;Great bedside manner. Great sense of humor. Experienced, empathetic and extremely knowledgeable.&nbsp;But overworked. I know that&nbsp;for sure, as he is&nbsp;now&nbsp;one of two oncologists left&nbsp;here at&nbsp;HaysMed&nbsp;though the&nbsp;department&nbsp;had been hoping for a fourth oncologist just&nbsp;last year.

Dr. Grove did my colonoscopies. Great bedside manner. Great sense of humor. Experienced, empathetic&nbsp;and extremely knowledgeable.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I’ve heard it said everyone is replaceable. I suppose that is an accurate statement. It doesn’t&nbsp;say, however, that the replacement will be better&nbsp;or that the replacement will come soon.&nbsp;What cannot be replaced—ever—is&nbsp;the doctor/patient relationship established over time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Why have 21&nbsp;health care providers&nbsp;abandoned&nbsp;HaysMed&nbsp;since Jan. 1, 2024?&nbsp;What has made it such a difficult place to help people that physicians have uprooted families and moved away?&nbsp;Who is not listening to those who&nbsp;actually work with patients?&nbsp;&nbsp;

The first three phases of Tallgrass 2nd Addition housing in east Hays have been so successful the developer&nbsp;Heart of America is moving on to Phase 4.

Heart of America&nbsp;is a nonprofit local group that helps further economic development in Ellis County.

Phases 1-3 are almost built out using an existing&nbsp;Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) at East 22nd Street and Wheatland Avenue. A new RHID is requested by the developer immediately north of the current RHID to Interstate 70.

City commissioners approved a resolution Tuesday regarding a shortage of quality housing based on the 2022 needs study by Fort Hays State University Docking Institute of Public Affairs. The findings must be approved by the Kansas Department of Commerce.

If approved, the RHID will capture the incremental real property taxes, less the state's 1.5 mills and Hays USD 489's 20 mills, for up to 25 years.

Heart of America&nbsp;is proposing the city finance and construct the project using bonds while utilizing the RHID revenues to offset the city's costs. 

The developer will provide a deposit equal to 30% of the projected infrastructure costs.

All 54 houses in Phases 1-3 have been purchased, although 12 are still under construction.

Phase 4 is platted for about 101 lots. The development is almost twice the size of the other three combined.&nbsp;

"That's a lot of lots," said Doug Williams, Grow Hays executive director. "Based on the arrangement we have for repayment of bonds, we're going to be very anxious to get things built."

"If that pace slows for any reason, there may be an opportunity to look at different price points for homes. There are also some areas that might lend themselves well to multi-family dwellings," Williams said.

The new houses in Phase 4 could look slightly different from the existing development.

"We have a couple of areas we'd like to look at for higher density single-family homes, which would require a planned development.

"But primarily, we hope to continue the same kind of concept that's been so successful so far," Williams said.

According to a study, to sustain population growth of 1%, or 220 new residents, for the city of Hays, the community needs to add 88 living units per year.&nbsp;

Heart of America expects construction to begin in 2025 following all city approvals.&nbsp;

Successful Tallgrass housing Phases 1-3 moves into Phase 4 in east Hays

(MANHATTAN) – Thirty-four scholarship winners for the 2024-25 school year were recognized during the annual Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) Convention November 20 in Manhattan. A total of $38,500 was presented by the Kansas Livestock Foundation (KLF) and its partners.

Two students attending the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University each have been awarded a $1,500 Cartridges for Cash (CFC) scholarship from Merck Animal Health and KLF.&nbsp;Maggie Brown&nbsp;of Wallace is the daughter of Nathan and Sara Brown.&nbsp;Chance Kopsa, the son of Kyle and Cassie Kopsa, is from Beloit. This award recognizes K-State veterinary school students with a career goal of being a large animal veterinarian.

Four students majoring in animal sciences and industry (ASI) at K-State each received $1,000 CFC scholarships through KLF.&nbsp;Ethan Kneisler,&nbsp;a junior from Lyndon, is the son of James and Kristin Kneisler.&nbsp;Sadie Marchiano&nbsp;of Fort Scott, daughter of Gary and Kylene Palmer, is a senior.&nbsp;Karsyn Sikes, daughter of Rusten and Rebecca Sikes of Clyde, is a junior.&nbsp;Hailey Wurtz&nbsp;from Seneca, daughter of Jerin and Stephanie Wurtz, also is a junior.&nbsp;One&nbsp;Fort Hays State University (FHSU) student also received the $1,000 award.&nbsp;Caleb McAfee&nbsp;from Valley Falls is a senior at FHSU majoring in animal science. He is the son of David and Janet McAfee. This scholarship is presented to students entering or returning to a Kansas community or senior college and pursuing degrees in agriculture or a related field. CFC scholarships are funded by Merck’s donation of 25¢ for each used Ralgro wheel and Revalor cartridge turned in to KLA. In 2023, members from Haskell County turned in the most cartridges. As a result, one student from that county was awarded a $1,000 CFC scholarship.&nbsp;Katelynn Delaplane&nbsp;of Satanta, the daughter of Doug and Kelly Delaplane, is a freshman at FHSU studying animal sciences and farm and ranch management.

Two students were awarded $1,500 Douglas A. Laue Memorial Scholarships.&nbsp;Keegan Craig&nbsp;is the son of Rex and Lori Craig from Talmage. He is a junior majoring in agronomy business at FHSU.&nbsp;Kash Liddeke, son of Duane and Keri Liddeke from Norwich, is a senior majoring in agricultural economics at K-State. This scholarship is awarded to students entering their junior or senior year at K-State or Fort Hays State University and pursuing degrees in agriculture.&nbsp;

Kiran Elam&nbsp;of Beloit has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from GoBob America’s Ranch Equipment and KLF. Elam is the daughter of Dave and Chris Elam. She is a senior at K-State majoring in agricultural economics. This scholarship is awarded to a student entering or returning to a Kansas community or senior college and pursuing a degree in agriculture or a related field.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Two $1,000 Hampel Oil Scholarships have been presented to FHSU students.&nbsp;Amy Foos, daughter of Bryan and Jennifer Foos of Ness City, is a senior majoring in agricultural business.&nbsp;Aubrey Warden&nbsp;is the daughter of Ron and April Warden from Sublette. She also is a senior majoring in agricultural business. This scholarship is awarded to students entering their junior or senior year at K-State or Fort Hays State University and pursuing degrees in agronomy, agribusiness or agricultural economics. Preference is given to applicants with a career goal of being actively engaged in a farming or feedyard enterprise.

The $1,000 Scott Johnson and Family Scholarship was awarded to&nbsp;Creed Caldwell&nbsp;of Parker. He is the son of Matt and Marcie Caldwell and is a freshman majoring in ASI at K-State. This scholarship is awarded to any student attending K-State and pursuing a degree in ASI, agricultural communications and journalism, agribusiness or agricultural economics.

Tyree Figge&nbsp;was awarded the $500 Fred H. Woodbury Memorial Scholarship through KLF. Figge is the son of Darrin and Gayla Figge from Onaga. He is a sophomore at K-State majoring in agribusiness. This scholarship is presented to a student attending a Kansas junior or senior college and pursuing a degree in agriculture. Preference is given to students residing within Chase, Franklin, Lyon, Osage or Wabaunsee counties.

Six students from across the state have received $1,000 “Youth in Agriculture” scholarships from KLF.&nbsp;Jaydee Abitz&nbsp;is the daughter of Justin Abitz from Wheaton. She is a freshman majoring in agriculture services and productions at Cloud County Community College.&nbsp;Abigail Lillard&nbsp;of Abilene is the daughter of Kregg and Katie Kohman. She is a senior at K-State majoring in agricultural communications.&nbsp;Lincoln Martin, Bucklin, is the son of Eric and Holly Martin. He is a freshman majoring in agribusiness at Butler Community College (BCC).&nbsp;Ashley Peters&nbsp;is the daughter of Ryan and Jamie Peters from Lehigh. She is a freshman majoring in animal science at BCC.&nbsp;Mason Springer, son of Michael and Christy Springer of Neodesha, is a freshman at K-State majoring in agricultural economics.&nbsp;Bryson Stejskal&nbsp;of Ulysses is the son of Jan Goehring. He is a senior majoring in feed science and pet food science at K-State. Funded by the KLF Club Calf Sale held during the Kansas Junior Livestock Show, these scholarships recognize students entering or returning to a Kansas junior or senior college and pursuing degrees in agriculture or a related field.

The Kansas CattleWomen (KCW) awarded eight $1,000 scholarships. Seven of the recipients are K-State students.&nbsp;Karlie Albright&nbsp;of Delia is the daughter of Barb and Scott Albright. She is a junior majoring in agricultural education.&nbsp;Bethany DeDonder, the daughter of Kevin and Misty DeDonder of Admire, is a freshman majoring in agricultural communications.&nbsp;Brooke Evans&nbsp;is the daughter of Jeremy and Stephanie Evans from Bucklin. She is a freshman majoring in ASI.&nbsp;Sydney Heller, daughter of Kylo and Sarah Heller of Hunter, is a freshman majoring in agribusiness.&nbsp;Erin Livingston&nbsp;from Ottawa is the daughter of Brandon and Amy Livingston. She is a freshman majoring in ASI.&nbsp;Hannah Macke, daughter of Steven and Jessie Macke from Baileyville, is a senior majoring in agribusiness.&nbsp;Avery Ziegler&nbsp;from WaKeeney is the daughter of Lance and Libby Ziegler. She is a freshman majoring in ASI.&nbsp;Kiley Whipple&nbsp;of Kalvesta, daughter of Toby and Michelle Whipple, is a senior at FHSU majoring in agricultural education. This scholarship, funded by the KCW silent auction, is awarded to students entering or returning to a Kansas community or senior college and pursuing degrees in dietetics, food safety, agriculture or a related field.

Two new scholarships were awarded through KLF this year. Equity Bank $2,500 scholarships were awarded to two K-State juniors majoring in ASI.&nbsp;Nicole Haase&nbsp;of Ellsworth is the daughter of Arrin and Kristin Haase.&nbsp;Cecillia Newby&nbsp;is the daughter of David and DeRhonda Newby from Oswego. Equity Bank provides services for KLA and its affiliated entities and is proud to support KLF scholarships. Three K-State freshmen each received a Rally House EAT BEEF $1,000 scholarship.&nbsp;Doak Guttery, the son of Brice and Shana Guttery of Alton, is majoring in ASI.&nbsp;Lyle Perrier&nbsp;of Eureka, son of Matt and Amy Perrier, is majoring in ASI.&nbsp;Kaden Weltmer,&nbsp;Smith Center, is majoring in ASI and agronomy and is the son of Philip and Jessica Weltmer. Rally House partners with KLA to support the KLF scholarship program through the sales of EAT BEEF merchandise.

This scholarship is awarded to a student entering or returning to a Kansas community or senior college and pursuing a degree in agriculture or a related field.&nbsp;&nbsp;Two $1,000 Hampel Oil Scholarships have been presented to FHSU students.&nbsp;Amy Foos, daughter of Bryan and Jennifer Foos of Ness City, is a senior majoring in agricultural business.&nbsp;Aubrey Warden&nbsp;is the daughter of Ron and April Warden from Sublette. She also is a senior majoring in agricultural business. This scholarship is awarded to students entering their junior or senior year at K-State or Fort Hays State University and pursuing degrees in agronomy, agribusiness or agricultural economics. Preference is given to applicants with a career goal of being actively engaged in a farming or feedyard enterprise.The $1,000 Scott Johnson and Family Scholarship was awarded to&nbsp;Creed Caldwell&nbsp;of Parker. He is the son of Matt and Marcie Caldwell and is a freshman majoring in ASI at K-State. This scholarship is awarded to any student attending K-State and pursuing a degree in ASI, agricultural communications and journalism, agribusiness or agricultural economics.Tyree Figge&nbsp;was awarded the $500 Fred H. Kansas Livestock Foundation scholarship winners recognized

Fort Hays State University&nbsp;Director of Admissions&nbsp;Jon Armstrong&nbsp;recently received the Laura Cross Distinguished Service Award (LCDS) from the Kansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (KACRAO).

The LCDS is KACRAO's highest award, presented to the individual who has served in the Admissions, Records, Registrar, or Enrollment Management profession for a substantial portion of their career and made significant contributions to KACRAO.

“It’s hard to put into words what this award means to me,” Armstrong said.&nbsp;“Receiving the Laura Cross is a tremendous honor and I’m thankful for being in a long line of amazing mentors.”&nbsp;

While it is a tremendous honor, being recognized for his outstanding work by his peers is not new for Armstrong. In 2021 he received the Diane Barnes Mentor Award (DB).&nbsp;This award is presented to an individual who has served as a dedicated and inspiring mentor to Admissions and Registration professionals.

And in 2001, Armsrtong received the&nbsp;Beth Tedrow Outstanding New Professional Award (ONP).&nbsp;This award is presented to an individual who has been in the Admissions, Records, Registrar or Enrollment Management profession for less than six years and is an active KACRAO member having served on at least one association committee. The recipient must also be involved in one or more campus committees. This award recognizes new professionals for achievements, involvement and potential in admissions and registration.

Originally from Liberal, Armstrong began working in Admissions at Seward County Community College in 1997. He moved to Hays in 2008 and has been Director of Admissions at FHSU since 2018.

“Being in admissions for all these years has allowed me to feed my passion for helping students and professional colleagues,” Armstrong said. “Every day, I have the opportunity to present opportunities for higher education at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; This is a very special place. Thanksgiving is around the corner and you’ve likely experienced a range of emotions planning for the holiday. Maybe you’re excited to see family, relieved to have a day off work, or maybe you’re stressed about how much food you’ve got to prepare. Despite the good or bad feelings related to Turkey Day, have you pondered the original name of the holiday itself, “Thanksgiving?”

Thanksgiving is rooted in the tradition of autumn harvest festivals. It has been celebrated for centuries, and George Washington made it an official holiday. He proclaimed that the people of the United States observe "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer."

As you prepare for the big day, I challenge you to remember the origin of the holiday: gratitude. Gratitude is the readiness to show appreciation and to return kindness. Research has found that people who consciously count their blessings tend to be happier and less depressed. In fact, a study showed that people who wrote one letter of thanksgiving for three weeks reported better mental health up to three months after the exercise ended. When people focus on the good in their lives, they tend to ruminate less on their negative experiences. Gratitude not only reduces the risk of depression, but it lowers stress which is a top cause of chronic illnesses including high blood pressure and heart disease.

As you can see, gratitude improves both mental and physical condition. If you’re interested in practicing gratitude for Thanksgiving and beyond, here are a few ways to make it routine:

· Recall three good things that happen to you each day. This may be a fun habit for you and your kids as you tuck them in at night!

· Keep a gratitude journal. Jotting down things you are grateful for is likely to change your perspective. You might see more positivity in the world around you. Looking through the pages of blessings in your life after a tough day may also be especially handy.

· Use your phone for good. We all find ourselves tied to our smart devices, so make it a priority to send a few “thank you” texts per week.

· Be self-aware of complaining. It’s easy to get drawn into a cycle of negativity when things aren’t going your way. To combat this habit, every time you complain, try to find the silver lining. When you can find the good in every situation, there is less room to fixate on the negatives of life.

Regardless of how you decide to practice gratitude, I encourage you to try it. Joshua Brown, a doctor of psychological science said it best, “Much of our time and energy is spent pursuing things we currently don’t have. Gratitude reverses our priorities to help us appreciate the people and things we do.”

Schedule change in refuse/recycling pick up in Hays for Thanksgiving holiday

A Hays man sustained injuries while riding his motorcycle after a vehicle turned into his path on Nov. 16 in Hays.

According to Hays Police Lieutenant Brandon Wright, a 39-year-old motorcyclist sustained a leg and head injury in a collision with a gray 2005 GMC Envoy.

At 11:16 p.m. on Nov. 16, in the 1800 block of Vine Street, a 49-year-old woman from Victoria was in the southbound left-turn lane as the motorcyclist traveled northbound.

The female driver turned left into Wendy's when she crossed the path of the oncoming motorcycle, resulting in a collision.

Wright said the motorcyclist was transported to the hospital for treatment. He was not wearing a helmet.

The SUV driver was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

Dr. Grove was persistent and so was able to schedule my surgery just before the operating room was closed due to the pandemic. Dr. Grove was able to perform the surgery without having to do a colostomy.

After my successful surgery, I have been under the care of Dr. Rodriguez and Dr. Grove. After four and a half years, I am still cancer-free.

Because of Dr. Grove and Dr. Rodriguez, I am 88 years old, alive and well.

These two physicians are the most knowledgeable, caring and giving individuals I have ever known. Dr. Grove and Dr. Rodriguez are exactly what our rural Kansas health care services need.

I was very saddened and upset to hear they are leaving HaysMed.

According to Dr. Grove and Dr. Rodriguez, the reason they are leaving is under the present leadership they are not able to provide the health care that the rural residents of Kansas need and deserve.

I was told to open Hays Post to see yet another doctor leaving Hays Medical Center—Dr. Robert Rodriguez.&nbsp; Not just a doctor but an oncologist who specializes in shedding some light on those who face the dirty “c” word.

The ones who beg for mercy and hope when they have nowhere else to turn.&nbsp; I know because I was one of those people.&nbsp; I don’t know how else to express my gratitude to Dr. Rodriguez other than thank you for being on my team. 

The Grove-Rodriguez team was the most down-to-earth, no-BS doctors that I could have hoped for.&nbsp; The surgeon and the oncologist went hand-in-hand, and they were the best. 

Some patients ask their doctor, “Is this the treatment you would want if you were in my shoes?” My friend, Robert, always would say, “If you were my mother, my wife, my daughter…I would proceed this way." I believed him. 

The 23 times I sat in that God-awful, most uncomfortable damn chair, I knew he always had my back. He was in my corner, lacing up my gloves.&nbsp; Thank you, Dr. Robert Rodriguez, for taking care of me! I have known you for six of the nine years you have been here, and I am better for it.

I would like to ask the good people of the community how do we fix this problem. We let someone come in who claims that they have the skills to run a hospital but do not listen to those who are really running the hospital (doctors, nurses, technicians, and many more).

&nbsp; We have lost 20 health care providers in the last year. How many more can we afford to lose? Not to mention, those who leave are banned from serving us through a nearby community. Non-compete clause? Is that a word that should even be used in health care?

This is not a retail business where goods are being sold.&nbsp; Lives are on the line!&nbsp; Shouldn’t we have more say in the health care of our community?&nbsp; We have public city, county and school board meetings—why not for health care (the reason we exist)?

Instead, there is a secret floor that none of the public knows about where the meetings are held in quiet. If this issue were only one or two disgruntled doctors leaving, I could understand that; however, this has been a small exodus of very important and qualified professionals in our community.

Bob Page, president and chief executive officer of the University of Kansas Health System, is the one who hired Eddie Herrman in September 2017. Since KU is no longer part of HaysMed, who does Eddie Herrman answer to now? The board? His buddies? I would very much like to know the answer to that question, as I am sure the citizens of Hays and surrounding communities would also.

I pray that those responsible for dismantling the infrastructure of our health care system are never diagnosed with a catastrophic disease where one day you need these people that you have chased away to save your life or someone in your family!&nbsp;
