As an Ag agent for KSRE over these past ten years, I have made countless home visits for individuals with tree issues. There are many reasons a tree can have problems. The drought we lived through these past few years has taken its toll on our trees, to the other extreme the heavy rains and flooding that occurred in Barton County around 2019 also caused significant damage to our trees. These environmental conditions are unpreventable but, giving your tree a little extra TLC for some time after can help your tree stay healthy for a long time after such events.

If your tree falters and dies what should you do? What type of tree should be the replacement? Here are some observations I have seen over time to help you find the right tree for the area you want to plant.

First of all, take a look at the site you wish to plant and observe the surroundings. How close to buildings are you? Are there powerlines above that area? What other obstacles will the tree encounter as it grows? One example is powerlines. If you have some in the area you wish to plant, you will want to chose a tree that won’t grow as tall as to interfere with them.Soil type is also important. Most trees prefer moist, well drained soils. Knowing your soil type and how your landscape is in various conditions will help you find a tree that will thrive in your yard.

Another question you need to address: what types of diseases and what insects are prone to the type of tree you are looking to plant? The Red Maple for example is a popular choice for a landscape tree with its vibrant fall color but, the tree has several issues in our area. The soil pH in our region tends to be high causing iron to be tied up chemically. As maples need more iron than other trees, they become chlorotic. This hinders chlorophyll production and causes the leaves to turn yellow. This in turn causes the tree to be unable to make its own nutrients and eventually it causes the tree to decline and die. If you want a Maple tree be prepared to treat the tree with an iron supplement as it ages and shows symptoms. Maples also tend to have poor branching, so early pruning and extra care as its ages is very important to have a tree that will be around for years to come.

Area unemployment rates in northwest Kansas were up slightly again in August.&nbsp;

Russell County's jobless rate jumped to 5.9% from 3.9% in July, Osborne County's rate was up to 5.1% in August up from 3.7% in July.

Ellis County's unemployment dropped slightly from 3.2% in July to 3% in August. Trego County's jobless rate dropped slightly from 4.3% in July to 3.8% in August.

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.3% in August for the state. This is an increase from 3.2% in July and an increase from 2.6% in August 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment was unchanged from July. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs&nbsp;decreased by 3,500 over the month, while government increased by 3,500.

Since August 2023&nbsp;Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 20,000. This change is due to an increase of 18,500 private sector jobs and an increase of 1,500 government jobs.

Technical Note:&nbsp;This release includes nonfarm jobs and labor force estimates for August 2024, which are produced using data from two monthly surveys. Data for nonfarm job estimates is collected through a survey of employers while the main input for labor force estimates is a survey of households. Data collected for this report references the week including Aug. 12.

The Hays USD 489 school board will consider the scope of the bond project for O'Loughlin Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. today at the Rockwell Administration Center.

The issue was tabled at the board's last meeting because some board members said they wanted to know more about the cost of the remaining work at the new Hays Middle School and Felten Elementary School before proceeding.

The board is set to vote on a guaranteed maximum price of&nbsp;$14.49 million from Nabholz Construction.

The board will also consider bids from Vogts Construction for $685,000 to build a bathroom/concessions building at the Hays Middle School Field/JV. The cost will also include $68,700 to pay HTK Architects for the project's design, bidding and construction administration, for a total of $753,700.

The board will also consider&nbsp;$763,449 to fund a portion of the improvements to 13th Street needed for the new high school and the relocation of Hays Middle School.

The city of Hays will pay a portion to improve the  East 13th Street corridor from Canterbury to Commerce.

Hays USD 489 BOE to discuss O'Loughlin bond budget

A little bit of weekend rain fell in Hays Sunday. 

According to the official report from the K-State Agricultural Research Center, 0.23 of an inch was measured.

That puts the monthly total in Hays as of Sept. 22 at 0.90 inches and the year-to-date total at 19.93 inches, just slightly over the annual cumulative average of 19.84 inches.

The monthly average cumulative total is 2.24 inches.

The Eagle Media Center, 2300 Hall, received 0.28 of an inch of rain over the weekend.&nbsp;

Warming temperatures with no precipitation are in the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/edfcc52b-3af7-4f5e-8d66-8b528f6779b6">three-day weather forecast</a>.&nbsp;

Sunday rain pushes Hays above normal, barely, for year-to-date precipitation

Fort Hays State University will come alive with Latin traditions and flavors on Thursday as it celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hosted by FHSU Hispanic American Leadership Organization, the evening showcases Hispanic culture through food, dances and activities.

Group President Alexis Trejo said he hopes the celebration inspires people to try something new while connecting with the Hispanic community in Hays.

"My goal for this event is community outreach and let other families know that there are Hispanic events in Hays," he said.

Set for 5 to 7 p.m. in the northeast parking lot of Lewis Field Stadium, the student organization is collaborating with the FHSU <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SpanishClubFHSU/">Spanish Club</a>, who will be dancing at the celebration.

The dance group will perform at 6 p.m. while attendees enjoy Latin flavors from food vendors like Taco Riend and Las Hefas.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church will provide desserts, while La Luz del Mundo Church from Bazine will serve pupusas.

"We appreciate the family from Bazine making us pupusas because they do have to make a drive," the organization's Secretary and Treasurer Ivonne Trejo said.

The celebration will also offer other foods, including churros, cheesecake, buñuelos, agua frescas, chips and tacos.

The family-friendly event, which is open to the entire community, will feature yard games and arts and crafts.

Group Vice President Karina Vargas said the month honors various Latin countries and clarifies that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day.

"This month celebrates Independence Day for Hispanic countries like Mexico and those in Central America," she said.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 in the United States to recognize the contributions and impact of Hispanic Americans.

Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize, Mexico and Chile are the Latin American countries celebrating their independence during the month.

Vargas hopes to raise awareness of Hispanic heritage in Hays with similar events, especially given the town's small Hispanic population.

"It's the least we can do in a community where we are the minority," she said.

"It's important for us to have this celebration," Ivonne said. "There are Hispanics who may feel a disconnect, and having this celebration can help them connect to their heritage and family roots."

In addition to educating the community about Latin cultures, the organization also strives to advocate for immigrants.

Alexis said when he joined the group, he recognized its growth potential and chose to expand this year's event to include students and the Hays community.

"It's important to express your heritage to show people where you're from because you're parents or family members made sacrifices for you to get here," he said.

FHSU Save The Kids, a nonprofit, will hold a fundraising bake sale at the celebration to support future events.

Joanna Carrillo, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director of the FHSU Student Government Association, will have a table at the event to educate attendees about Hispanic heritage.

Ivonne said The Hispanic American Leader Organization welcomes any student eager to explore and engage with a different culture.

"We make it clear that this isn't just for Hispanics but for those who simply want to learn more about Hispanic heritage and our background," she said.

THOMAS COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 10a.m. Sunday in Thomas&nbsp; &nbsp; County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 GMC Sierra driven by Melvin D. Gilley, 54, Burlington, Colorado, was eastbound on 4th Street in Colby.

As the pickup approached the the Range Avenue intersection, it moved into the far right lane to make a right turn. The driver failed to stop at the red light, continued into the intersection and collided with a northbound 2013 Chevy Malibu driven by Lucas&nbsp;Santos, 40, Colby.

EMS transported a passenger in the pickup Nancy K. Gilley, 54, Burlington, Colorado, to the Thomas County Medical Center.&nbsp; The drivers were not injured. All three were. properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Woman hospitalized after 2-vehicle NW Kansas crash

A newly launched program at Fort Hays State University will help students “hit the ground running” in the critical field of solving crimes. To introduce students to FHSU’s new bachelor’s degree in Criminalistics, the departments of criminal justice, chemistry, biology, and geosciences hosted an open house in September.

CRJ 210 Criminalistics, developed as a required core course for the program, will be taught by Dr. Morgan Steele, assistant professor of criminal justice. The course will offer an introduction to the different sciences that students can choose for program concentrations.

“The course sets students up to see how what they do in the lab will be useful in courtrooms, in the field, and in investigating different types of crimes,” Steele said.

Steele said he typically sees students double majoring in biology or chemistry together with criminal justice.

“Having a major built-in (criminalistics) is going to help them streamline their process without cutting back on their science or criminal justice education,” he said. “In addition, transfer students can hit the ground running because of the Kansas Board of Regents general education core program.”

Concentrations in criminalistics include forensic chemistry, forensic biology, and crime mapping and spatial analysis. These concentrations can lead to potential careers in crime lab analysis, chemical safety, DNA analysis, or crime data analysis.

What sets the criminalistics program apart from programs offered at other institutions, Steele said, is that the program is “truly a multi-disciplinary program.”

“Teaching forensic science is usually in chemistry or criminal justice,” he said. “It’s rare that it is in all three primary departments (chemistry, biology, and geosciences).”

In addition to the benefit to students, skills learned through the program will benefit law enforcement agencies.

“This is especially true in rural areas where agencies can’t create a specific position for a criminalist or forensic scientist,” said Tamara Lynn, professor and chair of criminal justice. “But if they could hire someone with that skill set for other positions, it would benefit the agency and our students.”

Sesquicentennial Action Committee meeting set for Monday night

The public is invited to be a part of the grand unveiling of the new Ellis Historic Walking Trail on Sept. 27 anytime between 8:30-11:30 a.m., downtown Ellis.

The south end of the trail will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony with WGS students at 8:30 AM, held at the historic Stone School marker in the front lawn. At 8:55 AM, the north end will host a ribbon-cutting with SMS students at the historic marker near the Washington Street Bridge. This scenic 1.5-mile trail offers a journey through history, connecting these two significant locations.

Experience history like never before with captivating re-enactments featuring notable figures such as John Mulvey, Praying John, Sheriff Miller, Buffalo Bill, Mother Smith, and Walter P. Chrysler. Some trail markers will have live hosts to guide you, while others will invite you to explore at your own pace through engaging readings.

While exploring downtown Ellis, be sure to check out the impressive mural inside the mini-train garage, whether you walk the entire 1.5-mile trail or just part of it. A knowledgeable host will guide you, connecting this stunning artwork to the vibrant history of the new walking trail.

Special guests joining in from Nicodemus will be descendants of former enslaved African Americans who left Kentucky after the Civil War in search of freedom in Kansas, often referred to as the “Promised Land.” Their ancestors traveled by train to Ellis and then embarked on a 40-mile journey north to Nicodemus, following the historic “Ellis Trail.” Keep an eye out for Buffalo Bill along the walking trail! WPAA to present 'Street Corner Symphony'

Two of the best-known phrases in modern history are “Gentlemen Start Your Engines,” and “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble,” both of which precede the start of popular sporting events. Maybe if we hunters had a catchy phrase to remind us, we would do a better job of preparing our gear for the upcoming plethora of hunting seasons. On a recent TV hunting show, the host was interviewing several professional hunting guides, asking each of them the question “What is the biggest mistake you see you clients make?” Without hesitation, the first guide answered “The biggest mistake I see clients make year after year is coming to camp unfamiliar with and unsure of their equipment.” He said “For example, they think that just because the sights on their bows or the scopes on their rifles were “spot-on” when they put them away last year or when they loaded them for the trip, they must still be spot-on when they arrive. I offer them the chance to sight them in before we go to the woods, but they decline. So, I take them to the woods and they blow a shot at a once-in-a-lifetime buck because their sights were indeed off.”

Let’s discuss some things we should all do in preparation of hunting season. First check your licenses and tags. Decide what all you plan to hunt this year and be sure you possess all the different stamps and tags to legally do so. If you’re not sure what you need, by all means contact your local conservation officer or the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks. You will have to purchase specific tags for deer and turkeys, which will be good only for this season, but general (fishing) and hunting licenses and fur-harvesting permits are now good for one full year from the date you purchase them.

Along with licenses, make sure you also have permission to hunt all your “honey holes.” Many land owners grant permission on a first- come, first- serve basis. We are most blessed to be able to hunt and trap on land owned by my sister and her family, but privately owned land available for hunting, fishing and trapping gets harder to find each year, so don’t put-off a trip to the landowners home to ask their permission in person.

Now check your clothing. As we all know, shirts and pants have a bad habit of shrinking over the years. Replace them, have your wife let them out a little to fit, or better yet, shrink yourself a little. Clothing does honestly wear out sometimes, and now is a good time to find fall and winter hunting apparel on sale. If you have your eye on some of the new camo patterns or some of the new scent-blocker clothing for instance, start shopping now. This includes footwear as well. There’s nothing worse than sore &amp; blistered or cold feet. Venues like trapping and upland bird hunting are strenuous exercise and there’s no time like the present to begin some sort of fitness program to get you in better physical shape. Start walking or bicycling in the evenings or any other cardio workout to increase your stamina.

Do a thorough inspection on your weapons of choice. Test sights on bows and scopes on rifles &amp; crossbows, and readjust if necessary. Make certain all mechanisms are lightly oiled and lubed. Put a few shells through your deer rifle just to familiarize yourself again with its feel and recoil. Shoot your bow to again become confident of your holding point and be certain the release is functional. Check for frayed or nicked strings and bad fletching on arrows. In short, be certain every part of every weapon is in good repair and functioning correctly. Also stock up on ammunition. Supplies have fluctuated greatly the last couple years, so get what you need early. For those of us who don’t keep deer feeders full or cameras

out year-round, other equipment and supply needs may include batteries for cameras and corn for feeders.

Hopefully you trappers cleaned and neatly packed away all your equipment after last season, but now is the time to pull everything out and see what you need in the way of additional equipment, scents and lures. The annual Kansas Fur Harvesters Assn. rendezvous is October 4 &amp; 5 at McPherson, KS, and is a great place to get everything you need, as there will be numerous supply vendors present, plus lots of “tail gaters” with good used equipment to sell. The event also boasts a full weekend of demonstrations by experienced Kansas trappers, and is an opportune place and time for new trappers to gain a wealth of knowledge.

Well, that’s it in a nutshell; probably nothing here you didn’t already know, but maybe reading this will spur you in to action. The beastly hot, dry summer in my part of Kansas will no doubt have some impact on this year’s hunting and trapping opportunities; I really don’t know what to expect. What I do know is that if I do my part by having all my equipment ready, there won’t be any unwelcome surprises in that category!

You will have to purchase specific tags for deer and turkeys, which will be good only for this season, but general (fishing) and hunting licenses and fur-harvesting permits are now good for one full year from the date you purchase them.Along with licenses, make sure you also have permission to hunt all your “honey holes.” Many land owners grant permission on a first- come, first- serve basis. We are most blessed to be able to hunt and trap on land owned by my sister and her family, but privately owned land available for hunting, fishing and trapping gets harder to find each year, so don’t put-off a trip to the landowners home to ask their permission in person.Now check your clothing. As we all know, shirts and pants have a bad habit of shrinking over the years. Replace them, have your wife let them out a little to fit, or better yet, shrink yourself a little. Clothing does honestly wear out sometimes, and now is a good time to find fall and winter hunting apparel on sale. If you have your eye on some of the new camo patterns or some of the new scent-blocker clothing for instance, start shopping now. This includes footwear as well. There’s nothing worse than sore &amp; blistered or cold feet. Venues like trapping and upland bird hunting are strenuous exercise and there’s no time like the present to begin some sort of fitness program to get you in better physical shape. Start walking or bicycling in the evenings or any other cardio workout to increase your stamina.Do a thorough inspection on your weapons of choice. Test sights on bows and scopes on rifles &amp; crossbows, and readjust if necessary. Make certain all mechanisms are lightly oiled and lubed. Put a few shells through your deer rifle just to familiarize yourself again with its feel and recoil. Shoot your bow to again become confident of your holding point and be certain the release is functional. Check for frayed or nicked strings and bad fletching on arrows. In short, be certain every part of every weapon is in good repair and functioning correctly. Also stock up on ammunition. Supplies have fluctuated greatly the last couple years, so get what you need early. For those of us who don’t keep deer feeders full or camerasout year-round, other equipment and supply needs may include batteries for cameras and corn for feeders.Hopefully you trappers cleaned and neatly packed away all your equipment after last season, but now is the time to pull everything out and see what you need in the way of additional equipment, scents and lures. The annual Kansas Fur Harvesters Assn. rendezvous is October 4 &amp; 5 at McPherson, KS, and is a great place to get everything you need, as there will be numerous supply vendors present, plus lots of “tail gaters” with good used equipment to sell. The event also boasts a full weekend of demonstrations by experienced Kansas trappers, and is an opportune place and time for new trappers to gain a wealth of knowledge.Well, that’s it in a nutshell; probably nothing here you didn’t already know, but maybe reading this will spur you in to action. The beastly hot, dry summer in my part of Kansas will no doubt have some impact on this year’s hunting and trapping opportunities; I really don’t know what to expect. Exploring Kansas Outdoors: Tis’ the Season

Fifty percent of all elderly caregiving in the United States is for someone living with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia, according to the American Alzheimer's Association.

<a href="https://www.adiffmindsetassoc.org/">A Different Mindset Association</a> is a Hays-based nonprofit group offering community support for people with dementia and their families.

The group offers community educational workshops, caregiver support groups in-person and online, and non-medical respite activities.&nbsp;

Up to 30 percent of caregivers are 65 or older and often care for an aging parent and at least one child. The caregivers' mental and physical health is also important, said Micki Armstrong, president of A Different Mindset.

"We want to make sure that those people are healthy, too," Armstrong said. "Statistics show that those people can get frustrated and have their own medical issues if they don't have some kind of relief."

The group has just started two programs in cooperation with the Hays Senior Center to socially engage persons with dementia and provide some respite from the demands on their caregivers.

On the first Tuesday of each month, participants who are in the early to moderate stages of dementia will enjoy lunch and then a field trip to various spots, such as the Triple 8 Equine Center, Sternberg Museum of Natural History and St. Vincent Church to see the creche and Bethlehem scene. There will be indoor and outdoor experiences and opportunities for community service.

"Every person with dementia must first be assessed. We do those assessments in their home with the caregiver there," Armstrong said.&nbsp;

"We have some simple criteria. They must be ambulatory to go up and down the bus steps, have some level of communication, and be able to toilet themselves."

The social engagement day program will be on the third Tuesday of each month at the Hays Senior Center.

Participants will enjoy lunch, art, drama, music, intergenerational activities, animal interactions, and community service. They will also engage in cognitive and physical exercises. 

Because the four-and-a-half-hour social engagement programs are non-medical, no medications will be distributed during those times.

A Different Mindset is based on a similar program in Leavenworth, The Deeper Window Association.&nbsp;

"When we saw it, we knew this is what we want to do," Armstrong said.

"These types of programs are needed all across our country as the dementia rates continue to rise," said one member of Different Mindset.&nbsp;

A core group of seven to eight local volunteers has organized Different Mindset and more volunteers are welcome.&nbsp;

Monique Koerner, family and community wellness agent for K-State Research and Extension Cottonwood District in Hays, is one of the volunteers.&nbsp;

"One of the main focuses of Different Mindset is to not only support the caregiver but we're also supporting the dementia patient through those activities, engaging their mind and their body in experiences that will help those connections in their brain," Koerner said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She will present a public workshop about brain health and dementia from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 9 in the extension office, 601 Main.

Koerner will talk about combating neurodegenerative diseases and good brain health.&nbsp;

The next evening, Oct. 10, Jill Wechsler, care coordinator at Clinkscales Elder Law Practice and a member of Different Mindset, will discuss the best approaches for behaviors related to dementia with a panel of experienced caregivers.

The session will also be from 6 to 8 p.m. in the extension office. A Zoom link will be provided for an online option. Call Koerner at 785-628-9430 to RSVP for either or both sessions.

"The hardest thing about this disease [Alzheimer's] is you lose your loved one twice. They fade away before they physically die," said a caregiver.

Although there's currently no cure for Alzheimer's, there is abundant research underway and some early success in slowing the progress of the disease and other dementias.

Some new research considers Alzheimer's "Type 3 diabetes."

"It has to do with inflammation of the brain and the build-up of toxins," Koerner said. "We already know too much sugar is not necessarily good for our bodies. They're researching its effect on the brain."

A Different Mindset supports area Alzheimer's patients, caregivers

The Fort Hays State University rodeo team began the season with big wins in their initial competitions, first in Manhattan and then in Colby.

Leading the way for the Tiger Rodeo Team was FHSU freshman Hailey Witte from Crookston, Neb. Witte is the most recent State High School Barrel Racing Champion from her home state and continued with her championship ways in Manhattan. She posted a sizzling 15.61 seconds to take an early lead in the first go-round and ended up placing third.&nbsp;

Witte came back for the Sunday Short-Go Championship Round, nearly tying her first run with a time of 15.64. Her overall performance in the aggregate placed her first overall for the weekend.&nbsp;

“For a freshman to raise up to the collegiate level and win in her debut performance is incredible,” said Coach Guy Forell. “I knew we were going to be well represented in the barrel racing this year. We had three barrel racers make it into the Top 12 Short Go at Manhattan, and I believe we’re going to see that with some regularity this year.”

Another freshman with a top performance at K-State was Abagail Olson from Sheridan, Wyo. Olson shook the whole battery of barrel racers in the first round with a smoking 15.52 run, easily winning round number one.

A knocked-over barrel in the short round took her out of the average at K-State but put everyone on notice that she will be a real threat this year. Olson is the Reserve National High School Champion and a two-time state champion and competes in the three events of goat tying, breakaway roping, and the barrels.

“I am just so eager to see how this team performs this year. With the new freshmen and transfers, we are getting noticed, and this year will be an exciting time,” Forell said.

Senior Prairie Robbins from Brookville also made the Top 12 Short Go in the barrel racing, posting a time of 15.97 in the Long Go and a 16.45 in the Short Go, finishing with a&nbsp;ninth place finish overall out of 155 competitors. Two other FHSU competitors, Lexi Wooten from Udall and Kagan Davis from Purcell, Okla., were just out of the top 12.

In the steer wrestling event, former FHSU football player turned rodeo athlete from Devers, Tex., J.T. Jones hit a time of 4.8 seconds to win the first go-round of the big man’s event. The 6-foot 3-inch, 230-pound Jones is primarily a tie-down calf roper but uses his size and athleticism to wrestle steers as his second event.&nbsp;

“This guy is a beast, has no fear, and just attacks the steers like he did on the gridiron, and it makes for some great watching,” said Assistant Coach Trevor Meier. Jones was long in the Short Go with a time of 19.1 and finished tenth overall.

In the breakaway roping, Katherine Walker, a Dodge City Community College transfer student from Erie, Ill., clocked a time of 2.9 seconds in the first go, was 3.4 in the Short Go, and finished a strong fifth place overall out of 162 contestants entered in the breakaway event.

Following their initial rodeo, the team traveled to Colby this past weekend, Sept. 12-14, and continued their successful start to the season. Once again, Hailey Witte placed first in barrel racing, and J.T. Jones took first in tie-down roping.

The FHSU Rodeo Team competes in the Central Plains College Rodeo Circuit, and after the first two rodeos of the season, the FHSU men are in ninth place out of fifteen competing teams, and the women are in fourth out of eleven.

Their next competition will be Sept. 26-28 at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Okla.

(Evanston, Illinois) -- Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of more than 16,000 Semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,870 National Merit scholarships worth nearly 26 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. 

Over 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

With a coveted Taylor Swift endorsement
rolling out earlier this month, everyone seems to be talking about the
engagement of young voters this election cycle.

Young people — typically, this is measured by
those under the age of 35 — are often touted as apathetic and not caring about
politics.

engagement of young voters this election cycle.Young people — typically, this is measured by
those under the age of 35 — are often touted as apathetic and not caring about
politics.But political science research suggests this
assertion couldn’t be further from the truth. Young people are very interested
in political issues, they’re just less willing to engage in mainstream forms of
political participation like voting and joining political parties.They’ve replaced these traditional forms of
democratic participation with alternative approaches like social movements,
rallies, protests, and consumer boycotts.The 2022 election cycle in Kansas shows us,
perhaps even more than previous generations, that young people are issue
voters. They’re less mobilized by candidates and parties but they are mobilized
strongly by salient political issues. In 2022, the issue was the fall of Roe v. Wade and Kansas’ constitutional
amendment on abortion access.The week following the Supreme Court decision
to overturn Roe v. Wade, the average
age of new voter registrations was 25. During that same week in 2020, the
average age of new registrants was 36.This increase in voter registration among
young people led to their higher than normal turnout in the primary election
that year.37.4% of registered voters under the age of 40
cast a ballot in the 2022 primary election.However, if we compare turnout to the 2024
presidential primary in March of this year, young voter turnout drops
significantly. Only 1.5% of all registrants under the age of 40 cast a ballot. In total, only 7.1% of registered voters
turned out in this election, but the age disparities are stark. For comparison,
17.4% of registered voters aged 65 and older turned out.Even among registered Democrats and
Republicans, turnout was 20.1% for those 65 and older and only 2.3% for those
under 40.This suggests that young voters are not
necessarily translating strong issue preferences into partisan vote choice, but
when issues are directly on the ballot they turn out in droves.Whichever candidate or party can overcome this
youthful rejection of traditional political participation by finding ways to
connect themselves directly with specific policy issues will have the potential
to sway every election. Academic scholarship on civic engagement
points to four factors that increase political participation: trust (in
government and others), resources (time, money, knowledge), engagement
(psychological engagement, attitudes, efficacy), and invitations (from
activists, elected officials, parties, candidates).Historically, young people have had the lowest
levels on all of these indicators. But the tide seems to be turning. Nationally,
young people had higher than average turnout in the 2018 and 2020 elections.
Here in Kansas, they had higher than average turnout in 2022.These higher turnout levels were in direct
response to candidates and parties targeting young voters and their policy
preferences.Young people represent a significant portion
of the electorate and as they become a larger share of eligible voters, their
influence on elections and policy decisions only grows.Their engagement has the potential to shift
political priorities and electoral outcomes.Don’t count out Kansas’ young voters.Note: All Kansas voter registration data is
