Cory Trépanier has spent the last 14 years exploring the Arctic, braving tough terrain and Arctic wolves, to bring the world images in film and art of the splendor of the landscape.

Trépanier's exhibit "Into the Arctic" is on display now through Sept. 1 at the <a href="http://sternberg.fhsu.edu/">Sternberg Museum of Natural History</a> in Hays.

Trépanier, 51, who lives near Toronto, started to fall in love with the idea of a project in the Arctic in 2005.&nbsp;

"That was when I started to see images of the Arctic," he said, "these incredible vast open spaces and obviously the stuff we think of — icebergs and glaciers and mountains — and really connected with this desire inside to see more and explore more and to see places really few people get to go explore with my own eyes while I am physically able in this stage in my life."

While in the Arctic on multiple expeditions,&nbsp;Trépanier said he was humbled by a world that he became quickly aware was much bigger than himself.

"It gets down to you, your tent and your hiking boots and opens you up to the world around you," he said. "It is an experience you don't have often unless you get into these types of places."

Trépanier photographs, shoots video as well as sketches and paints in oils en plein air while on his trips.

Planning a month-long trip to the high Arctic took more than a year. The year he and his brother visited the national park in the high Arctic, they were the only two official visitors to the park outside of park staff and scientists.

The packs the brothers took on their trip weighed more than 120 ponds each.

"There is that physical nature of going through all this effort of hiking for a day or two and pitching camp to find a place to actually paint," he said. "Then there is a switchover into a creative space to find myself really being able to be on full alert to all the creative potential that is all around me."

The remoteness of such as trip meant the brothers were on their own. They called in daily to relay their position to authorities by satellite phone. But even if they had run into trouble with a bear or other disaster, it would have taken days for help to reach them.

"That remoteness and sense that you are cutting off ties with the rest of the world and being independent on your own is a big part of it, but it is also a part of the allure,"&nbsp;Trépanier said.

After dealing with terrain and mosquitoes and blowing sand, he said he hopes his sense of awe and wonder is coming through in his art.

Trépanier became friends with some of the Inuit people during his visits to the Arctic. He told the story of spending time with an elder, David.

"I went out on the land with him for a while," he said. "As we walked around, he started to bend over and show me all of these things. He would pick up this plant. 'See this? This is what we make tea with.' 'This is what we make fire with.' And then he picked up this mushroom that was kind of old. 'See this? We use this for cuts.' He demonstrated on one of his cuts how this heals. There is so much to learn. ...

"People often see the void empty spaces of the North. There is nothing there," he said. "It is such a perspective shift when you travel and you realize through these people there is everything. It is a land of bounty."

Trépanier also said the Inuit and the North taught him patience.

"They live with the rhythms of the land," he said of the Inuit.

Trépanier also filmed his encounters with wildlife, including three Arctic wolves.

"My brother and I were in a tent, and three Arctic wolves come up to us and surround us. There was nobody anywhere," he said. "They came up to us. They studied us. They looked at each other. I saw because I was filming it all, they were getting into hunting formation.

"That immediate response is kind of primal. Your heart starts to race and you are one with this wild animal that is just curious about us."

The brothers were not allowed to carry guns in the national park in the high Arctic. All they had to defend themselves if they would have been attacked were knives.

Trépanier also encountered multiple polar bears while in the Arctic, although from a safer distance.&nbsp;

He said he hoped by exposing people to the landscapes in which these animals live will spur the public to protect both the land and the creatures who live in it.

"As an artist, although I am not painting polar bears, it is very much my hope my work of documenting these environments through my paintings helps people connect with these places more and maybe even fall in love with them a bit," he said. 

"And then engage in the conversation of what is happening in the North and how it is affecting the wildlife, the environment and the people. I think art can touch people if it is done in a certain way."

Trépanier said people are itching to get at the resources in the Arctic, which is a great concern to him.

"There is the science over here and people are disconnected to it," he said. "With the art, you get engaged with these places that are real and are passionate. Then this science becomes of interest and relevant to this audience who has maybe never spent any time hearing about it at all."

Although&nbsp;Trépanier did not set out to for his art to documentary in nature, he said he believes it may have evolved to that.

He has only been able to revisit one site — Coronation Glacier — and even in that 11-year interim, the loss of ice was obvious.

"In my lifetime, if I go back there in 30 years, what will be left?" he said. "How much will this place have changed in my own lifetime?"

Trépanier has also partnered with writers on the Arctic for a coffee table book, also titled "Into the Arctic," which is set to be released soon.

"And then engage in the conversation of what is happening in the North and how it is affecting the wildlife, the environment and the people. I think art can touch people if it is done in a certain way."Trépanier said people are itching to get at the resources in the Arctic, which is a great concern to him."There is the science over here and people are disconnected to it," he said. "With the art, you get engaged with these places that are real and are passionate. Then this science becomes of interest and relevant to this audience who has maybe never spent any time hearing about it at all."<figure>

Members of the Hays Volga German Society, organizers of Oktoberfest Hays, are looking for vendors for the two-day event. The Annual Volga German Oktoberfest will take place Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3, in Municipal Park.

The raising of steins and wearing lederhosen will be part of the 2020 Oktoberfest Hays. The free admission event will feature two days packed with many German traditions, from food and drinks, to music, contests, dancing and more. &nbsp;

Registration is open for vendors to become an integral part of a long-standing Hays tradition. Oktoberfest Hays consistently attracts thousands of visitors and residents who attend every year. Oktoberfest organizers seeking vendors for fall festival

YODER — Twenty-four new law enforcement officers graduated from the&nbsp;Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center on June 4. Deputy Lauren Tucker of the Rooks County Sheriff’s Office was the graduating class president. The ceremony was held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.

The new officers were members of the 264th basic training class. The graduates, who began their training in December 2019, represented 20 municipal, county and state law&nbsp;enforcement agencies from across Kansas.

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of University of Kansas Professional &amp; Continuing Education.

"We train our officers to serve their diverse communities with a commitment to upholding the law and the safety of all citizens with our longstanding focus on policing without bias," said KLETC Executive Director Darin Beck. "I know the 264th basic training graduating class will uphold these principles and proudly protect and serve."

<a href="http://womenmanagingthefarm.com/">Women Managing the Farm</a>, a program housed at Kansas State University, will be hosting agricultural economist David Kohl for a one-hour talk beginning at 7 p.m. The talk, titled ‘Transforming the Black Swan into a Phoenix,’ will dig into how consumer demand may shape agriculture’s macro view in the coming decade.

Kohl is professor emeritus and member of the Academic Hall of Fame in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech University. In a career spanning five decades, he has dealt with agriculture’s “black swans” routinely, helping to guide the industry and related business through the economic whitewater.

The title of his talk is a reference to one of his main points: describing how agriculture can move past the current conditions and “rise like a phoenix, the mythical bird for regeneration,” according to information about the webinar.

Kohl will present specific strategies to producers, agribusiness owners and ag lenders, including time-tested strategies of resilience and agility to reenergize business decision-making.

The Hays Area Planning Commission will meet Monday for more discussion of a rezoning request from “A-L” Agriculture to “R-M” Residential Multi-Family District near E. 33rd St. and Sherman Ave.

The property was formerly the Ambassador Hotel that was demolished in 2017.

According to minutes from the commission's May meeting, Curtis Deines, Hays PIE superintendent, presented the&nbsp;preliminary and final plat of the proposed Abel Addition located on the west side of Vine Street at 37th Street.&nbsp;

     The preliminary plat consists of four lots with 37th Street connecting Vine Street to Skyline Drive.

 Deines told the commission the city of Hays and adjacent property owners have worked together on a plat that incorporates the North Vine Street Corridor project and increases potential for redevelopment of the existing sites.

He noted that Lot 1, Block 1, is a remnant tract purchased by the city during the acquisition process of the North Vine project.&nbsp;

The Planning Commission will consider setting a July 20 public hearing for the rezoning request.

The Ellis County Health Department on Wednesday announced two new positive cases of coronavirus in the county, pushing the number of active cases to four.

The two new cases involved individuals exhibiting mild symptoms. They are contacts of each other and have been in contact with a known positive COVID-19 case outside of Ellis County.

The were identified via contact tracing efforts from another county.&nbsp;

The health department said contacts of the latest cases will be notified.

Hays received .71 inches of rain last night as a storm moved across northwest Kansas, according to the report at the K-State Ag Research Center.

Peak wind gusts reached 47 mph at the 2 meter level, and a 53 mph wind gust was reported at 8:20 p.m. at the 10 meter level.

Hays has received .72 inches of rain for the month, which is less than the average of&nbsp;3.33 by the end of June.

Hays continues to be substantially below the average moisture for the year, having received 7.61 inches year to date. The average moisture for Hays as of the end of June is 14.54 inches.

The high for Tuesday was 89 degrees and the low was 49, but Hays did not set a record low. That was 40 degrees set in 1910.

The forecast for today is sunny with a high near 77, breezy with a northwest wind 16 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph.

Thursday's high is forecast at 89 degrees with the forecast for the rest of the week sunny and highs in the 90s.

The Heartland Community Foundation notified Ellis County Fire &amp; Emergency Management of
approval for a grant from the Dane G Hansen Community Grant Fund in the amount of $2,500.
The grant was submitted to assist in the purchase of new National Oceanic Atmospheric
Administration weather radios, for in home use.


The grant will provide funds to purchase approximately 100 weather radios. The grant will help
residents who receive a radio by providing an early warning notification for severe weather while
inside their home. These devices, which would be linked to the National Weather Service
system would alert residents who are indoors with devices similar to a fire alarm.


As a reminder, outdoor warning sirens are designed to only notify citizens who are outdoors and
not those who are inside a structure. These new weather radios will help fill that gap.


Ellis County greatly appreciates the support from the Heartland Community Foundation and the
Dane G. Hansen Foundation with their continuous support for Northwest Kansas projects.

Ellis Co. Fire receives grant for weather radios

WALLACE COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Tuesday in Wallace County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Jeep Wrangler driven by&nbsp; Jenny L&nbsp;McClelland, 32, Colby, was eastbound on U.S. 40 seven miles east of Kansas 27.

&nbsp;The strong winds blew a westbound bumper-pull camper being transported&nbsp; behind a 2018 Chevy Silverado driven by Cory J. Chick, 40, Durango, Colorado, onto the Jeep, according to Trooper Tod Hileman.

McClelland was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Bateman Funeral Home. Chick, an adult and 2 children in the Silverado were not injured. 

McClelland was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

<a href="https://www.creeksidehays.com/">Creek Side RV Resort</a> in Hays is entering its second phase of construction this summer.

The facility, which is about a mile off Interstate 70 on the bypass, recently finished a playground and small dog park.

A pond, cabins, a large dog park and a walk-in movie theater are in the works for phase two of the resort.

Aaron Dreher, owner, said the park has 36 sites and&nbsp;will add nine more sites during phase 2. Eventually, he hopes to have 50 sites at the facility.

All of Creek Side's current sites are pull-through with full water and electric hookups.

Phase one included the office, store, bathhouse, laundry, propane station, dump station and horseshoe pit. Wifi is also available at the park.

The RV park opened in the fall and was having some full nights until COVID-19 halted travel temporarily.

Now that states are reopening, he said business is starting to pick up again. He said he anticipates a busy travel season as people opt to travel by RV rather than plane or or other mass transportation.

Three cabins will be completed by mid- to late summer with 10 more cabins planned for later phases of the park.

The cabins will have two queen-size loft beds, fireplace and bathroom. They will be fully furnished, including fridge, microwave, sink,&nbsp; TV, DVD player, dishes and sheets. They will also have their own outdoor fire pits, charcoal grills and picnic tables.

Dreher said traveling nurses use the facility and like to have something furnished they can rent month to month. Short and nightly stays will also be offered. Dreher has yet to set the rates for cabins.

RV spots run $35 per night for nightly rentals.

Although the resort is fairly self-contained, Uber provides service to the resort, as do food delivery services, Dreher said.

Dreher said he hopes he can make the walk-in theater available to the public. The theater would show second run or classic movies. Movie goers would be encouraged to bring their lawn chairs or blankets and snacks.

Admission would be free for resort guests. He said he hoped to begin work on that project this fall.

The pond for the park has been dug, and Dreher hopes to stock it with fish, as well as build a dock.

"What people really like about us is that we are off the interstate," Dreher said. "They don't want to be right off the interstate because it's loud."

Creek Side is surrounded on two sides by large, mature trees, which serve as a sound and wind break.

Dreher also will soon offer used RV sales. He will start small with six or seven campers at a time.

This fall and winter, the resort is going to offer mobile or pull-through RV winterizing. You can come to the resort and have your RV winterized while you wait or make an appointment for the staff to come to your location.

During phase three, the park will add five premium sites, that will have larger concrete pads with their own fire pits, picnic tables, larger grass areas and mature trees. Dreher said he hopes to start on phase three next year.

Dreher also has plans for an archery range and RC car track.

Creek Side Resort enters phase 2 of development

In addition to a 24-Hour Helpline, victims and survivors of abuse can now reach out to an advocate from Options Domestic &amp; Sexual Violence Services using a brand new text feature, live web chat or through a new mobile app. 

On the other side of every message an advocate will be ready to help with empathy, support, counseling and a safety plan.

Services are free and confidential and provided by highly trained advocates.

Developed by Citizen Observer, survivors can reach an advocate 24/7 by texting “HOPE” to 847411, visiting the Options website at <a href="http://www.help4abuse.org">www.help4abuse.org</a>, or by downloading the “My Mobile Options” app on any Android or Apple devices.

"Think about this," said Mandie Hachmeister, director of client services. "You’re currently with an abusive partner and need help. You’re on a bus and you see a sign for Options 24-Hour Helpline. Calling an advocate and having an in-depth conversation about what you’re going through, within earshot of a bunch of strangers, is too uncomfortable to bear.

"Or, an abusive partner is in the next room. You’re afraid and don’t know what to do, but he or she will be able to hear you if you call a helpline. And you certainly can’t leave the house without suspicion. But messaging, whether on a phone or a computer, can be done privately. No one can hear that conversation."

My Mobile Options — part of the agency's new Mobile Advocacy Initiative designed to bring advocacy services directly into towns in their 18-county northwest Kansas service area — will ensure survivors in the most isolated, rural communities have access to services.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, hotline calls increased by over 200 percent and the agency realized victimization not only was on the rise, but victims were trapped in their homes, possibly without a means of contacting anyone.

This is true for many victims, even once the shelter at home orders are lifted. Advocates at Options saw a need and filled it by creating new avenues to reach out for help.

“For people experiencing domestic abuse in rural communities or while sheltering in place, there are very few opportunities to get away from an abuser to seek help. 

"Isolation and long drives to areas that have brick-and-mortar facilities can keep people from reaching out," Hachmeister&nbsp;said. "Our concern about an uptick in domestic violence incidents led us to this solution for victims who can now reach out for help, even if they are fearful that their abuser may be within earshot. It is critical for victims to know they are not alone, and we are here to help.”

“Hope starts here,” said Executive Director Jennifer Hecker. “Options Domestic &amp; Sexual Violence Services is the first domestic and sexual violence victim services program to offer a confidential 24-hour messaging platform in Kansas.” 

Provided by a grant through the Office of the Attorney General, these new innovative services will increase access to quality services for victims, survivors and their families, reduce barriers to getting help during times of crisis, and expand victim's choices.

Through the new platform Options will be able to pinpoint areas of high need and respond by providing additional mobile advocacy services directly in that community.
