NORTON&nbsp; — Norton County Community Foundation (NCCF) awarded $4,750.00 to Norton County nonprofit organizations and charitable projects in the May grant cycle. These funds were part of the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, which offers financial support to qualifying and deserving projects and programs in Northwest Kansas.&nbsp;Grant funds supported the following organization and project:

DSNWK’s request for funds stated that these home upgrades had been deemed necessary due to the status of the current door and kitchen cabinets. “They are essential in continuing to offer the individuals who reside in the home a pleasurable living experience,” said the applicant. The kitchen cabinet upgrade will provide more functional space, allowing staff and individuals greater use of the kitchen, and the front door repair will improve the aesthetic appearance of the home.

“DSNWK does an excellent job supporting a life of dignity and personal satisfaction for the individuals living in Norton County,” said Tara Vance, NCCF Executive Director. “We’re honored to support their work and to fund this request for facility upgrades.”

DSNWK awarded grant by Norton Co. Community Foundation

As the summer temperatures rise, safe food handling when eating outdoors becomes even more critical. As food heats up in summer temperatures the bacteria multiplies rapidly. Here are some simple food safety guidelines for transporting your food and serving it safely once you've arrived at the picnic spot.&nbsp;

Keeping food at proper temperatures is critical to preventing the growth of foodborne bacteria. The key is to never let your picnic food remain in the "Danger Zone" — between 40° F and 140° F — for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour if outdoor temperatures are above 90° F. This is when bacteria in food can multiply rapidly, and lead to foodborne illness.

Cold perishable food should be kept in the cooler at 40°F or below until serving time. Place cold food in a cooler with ice or frozen gel packs. Pack beverages in one cooler and perishable food in another. That way, as picnickers open and reopen the beverage cooler to replenish their drinks, the perishable foods won’t be exposed to warm outdoor air temperatures. Foods in individual serving dishes can be placed directly on ice, or in a shallow container set in a deep pan filled with ice. Drain off water as ice melts and replace ice frequently. Once you've served it, food should not sit out for longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour if the outdoor temperature is above 90°F. If it does - discard it.

Hot food should be kept hot, at or above 140°F. Hot food should be wrapped well and placed it in an insulated container until serving.&nbsp; Grilled food can be kept hot until served by moving it to the side of the grill rack, just away from the coals. This keeps it hot but prevents overcooking. Don’t forget to pack your food thermometer. Always use it to be sure your food is cooked thoroughly.&nbsp;

When serving, never re-use a plate or utensils that previously held raw meat, poultry, or seafood for serving — unless they’ve been washed first in hot, soapy water.&nbsp; Otherwise, you can spread bacteria from the raw juices to your cooked or ready-to-eat food. In storage, be sure to keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood securely wrapped. This keeps their juices from contaminating prepared/cooked foods or foods that will be eaten raw, such as fruits and vegetables.

If you don’t have access to running water, simply use a water jug, some soap, and paper towels. Or, use moist disposable towelettes for cleaning your hands. If you desire, follow this with a hand sanitizer but not instead of cleaning your hands.

UNRUH: Picnic food safety

TREGO COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after noon Saturday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 GMC Envoy driven by&nbsp; Courtney D. Windholz, 19, Bucklin, was southbound on 290th Road four miles west of Kansas Highway 147.

&nbsp;The driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a dirt embankment on the drivers side. The vehicle rolled and driver was ejected. The vehicle&nbsp; came to rest on its roof facing Northwest.

Windholz was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Schmitt Funeral Home.

Midwest Energy on Saturday reported a flurry of scam telephone calls in the area.

"Hundreds of Hays residents received calls from scammers today, posing as Midwest Energy and threatening disconnection in 30 minutes if immediate payment wasn’t made by store-bought money card," Midwest Energy spokesman Mike Morley said. "Midwest Energy reminds customers that they don’t accept money cards as a form of payment. &nbsp;Additionally, the company does not perform disconnections on weekends. If you ever receive a phone call demanding payment for your energy bill, hang up and call Midwest Energy at (800) 222-3121.”

As western Kansas settles into the typically dry and warm summer months, the lack of moisture in the spring is beginning to impact ag producers across the board.

"Right now, pretty much all of western Kansas is in some stage of a drought," said Bob Gillen,&nbsp;K-State Agriculture Research Center department head. "Some would be moderate drought, ranging all the way up to extreme drought."

While the area is now heading into the warmest months of the year, he said the amount of precipitation in the area can vary widely year to year.

"The whole history of western Kansas is drought, then a wetter period, then headed into the next drought," Gillen said. "So in that sense, it's not unusual."

Some areas though are in what he described as a once-in-a-decade drought.

"We have some areas right now, starting in southwestern Ellis County then goes to the southwest corner of the state that is in a drought that we would only see about one year out of 10," Gillen said. "So in that sense, it is getting into the extreme end."

While last year above-average precipitation fell in the area, both 2015 and 2012 were dryer than normal in Hays.

If you take the last seven years and average them together, we have had 4 inches more rain per year than the overall average," Gillen said.

But that doesn't mean that the drought might not continue — or get worse.

While the amount of precipitation in the area for the next few months is anybody's guess, looking at the long-term trends, Gillen said, we expect things to get drier.

"Right now, about 20 percent of western Kansas is in that one out of a 10-year drought,"

In the Hays area, the drought is not as pervasive.

"We are about in a two out of 10-year drought in Hays," Gillen said.

The 2 inches of rain that fell in the area over the Memorial Day weekend helped soften the overall drought around Hays, but the drought becomes more extreme further south.

"If you start from Hays and go down towards southwest Kansas it gets drier and drier," Gillen said. "And if you get all the way down toward Lakin and Syracuse, they are actually in what we call an extreme drought, which is a one-out-of-20-year drought."

Weather predictions indicate little or no relief will come through June, but conditions may improve by the end of the summer, but may not be enough to pull the hardest-hit areas in southwest Kansas out of drought conditions.

So far, the drought conditions have not impacted the wheat crop around Hays significantly.

"It's going to be an average year," Gillen said. "Maybe not too bad."

But producers to the west may not be so lucky.

"The research station that I oversee in Garden City, we are talking about 20-bushel yields," Gillen said, "if we do that well."

While the wheat crop will be affected by the dry conditions, corn and soybean crops could take a harder hit.

"The corn and soybeans, particularly if we stay in this dry trend through the month of June, I think they are going to be under some pretty substantial stress," Gillen said. "Grain sorghum possibly, as well."

Grass growth for cattle production is also not immune to the drought conditions. And with producers already struggling with COVID-19-related issues and falling market prices, the drought is compounding concerns.

"There is not too much good news out there for ag producers right now," Gillen said. "Economic conditions are quite poor, particularly for beef producers, and a little more than for the grain producers."

Ellis County Rodeo Pageant welcomes the new Little Miss age division

It is not too late for cowgirls to throw their hats into the rodeo arena for this year's&nbsp;Miss Ellis County Rodeo Pageant.&nbsp; The quickly approaching application deadline is June 26.

The Ellis County Rodeo Queen Committee is excited to bring back the Little Miss age division.&nbsp; Girls ages 7 to 10 can now compete for “The Little Miss Ellis County Rodeo."&nbsp; Contestants will be judged on their knowledge of rodeo, horsemanship, modeling, and public speaking skills. &nbsp; The 2020 Little Miss winner will receive a crown and sash.&nbsp; She will represent Ellis County at several community events throughout her reign. &nbsp;

“Rodeo pageants are a great opportunity for young girls.&nbsp; They learn vital skills that they can use throughout their life.” stated Lisa Kisner, Chair of the Ellis County Rodeo Pageant Committee. “This year we are excited to have amazing prizes for each category and to bring back the little miss age division.”&nbsp;

The Ellis County Rodeo Pageant has 2 additional divisions.&nbsp; The queen contestants range from 15 to 21 years old and the princess contestants range from 11 to 14 years old.&nbsp; Both of which are judged on their knowledge of rodeo in a written test, horsemanship, public speaking, modeling, personal interviewing, awareness of current events, photogenic qualities, and overall professionalism.&nbsp; Integrity, personality, poise, and knowledge are also important components of these contests.&nbsp; Miss Ellis County Rodeo Queen will win a crown, sash, custom belt buckle, custom saddle, and a pair of traveling chaps.&nbsp; Miss Ellis County Rodeo Princess will receive a crown, custom belt buckle, horse tack, and a sash.&nbsp; There are additional prizes given for the winner in each category.

The Ellis County Rodeo Pageant Committee is taking applications from youth across the state of Kansas that would love to promote the western way of life. They must have a love for horses, knowledge of rodeo and be exceptional representatives for Ellis County.

The pageant will be held Friday, July 10, starting at the Ellis County Fair Grounds arena and ending at BriefSpace in Hays, KS.&nbsp; The final coronation ceremony will be held before the KPRA Rodeo at the Ellis County Fair Grounds, June 14, where the winners will be crowned for the year 2020.

Ellis Co. Fair calling all cowgirls to compete in annual pageant

Sometimes politics meets the personal, head on.&nbsp; This is one of those times.&nbsp; On June 14, I turn 75. On June 22, Michel and I celebrate our 52nd&nbsp;wedding anniversary. Forty-one years ago this month, we moved to Kansas, and one year after that our son was born. Happy 40th, Dakota.

Ordinarily, such a grouping of personal mileposts would lead to reminiscence and reflection.&nbsp; But these are no ordinary times.&nbsp; The conjunction of the coronavirus pandemic, our immense economic dislocation, and the sweeping protests over racial injustice have rendered reminiscing insignificant, if not irrelevant.&nbsp;

These historic circumstances do require powerful short-term responses.&nbsp; Governors and mayors must cope with diminishing resources and overwhelming policy requirements.&nbsp; Moreover, the crises produce simultaneous, contradictory demands on both citizens and leaders.

Leaders need to assess how best to use scarce resources, while ordinary people must weigh the desire to protest or shop against the need to remain safe from Covid-19.

Short-term crisis policies almost always constitute reactions, but our long-term responses can offer important and dramatic opportunities. Indeed, Kansas policy-makers should heed Winston Churchill’s axiom that one should “never let a good crisis go to waste.” This is especially true when we can benefit from the natural experiments that crises offer.&nbsp;

In emerging from our confluence of crises, at least four policy assessments should flow from our experiences.

First, expand Medicaid.&nbsp; Here, the pandemic, surging unemployment, and differential racial treatment come together to dramatically demonstrate this need.&nbsp; Even for those with jobs, losing health insurance is one economic jolt away. Moreover, Covid-19 has not been an equal opportunity killer, with African-Americans and Hispanics disproportionately affected, as always.&nbsp;

Kansas universities and colleges were already facing serious problems, due to flat or declining student-age populations and the loss of many full-pay international students.&nbsp; But the pandemic and economic challenges greatly exacerbate those problems, with funding declines from many sources – the state, tuition, athletics – pushing administrators to reshape higher education at breakneck speed.&nbsp; They need to turn short-term responses into long-term visions, as higher education shrinks.

After 75 years, I’d love to just reflect, but our challenges are so great and our opportunities so many that I’m happy to look ahead -- anxious, to be sure -- but more with hope than despair.

 </figure>Sometimes politics meets the personal, head on.&nbsp; This is one of those times.&nbsp; On June 14, I turn 75. On June 22, Michel and I celebrate our 52nd&nbsp;wedding anniversary. Forty-one years ago this month, we moved to Kansas, and one year after that our son was born. Happy 40th, Dakota.Ordinarily, such a grouping of personal mileposts would lead to reminiscence and reflection.&nbsp; But these are no ordinary times.&nbsp; The conjunction of the coronavirus pandemic, our immense economic dislocation, and the sweeping protests over racial injustice have rendered reminiscing insignificant, if not irrelevant.&nbsp;These historic circumstances do require powerful short-term responses.&nbsp; Governors and mayors must cope with diminishing resources and overwhelming policy requirements.&nbsp; Moreover, the crises produce simultaneous, contradictory demands on both citizens and leaders.Leaders need to assess how best to use scarce resources, while ordinary people must weigh the desire to protest or shop against the need to remain safe from Covid-19.Short-term crisis policies almost always constitute reactions, but our long-term responses can offer important and dramatic opportunities. Indeed, Kansas policy-makers should heed Winston Churchill’s axiom that one should “never let a good crisis go to waste.” This is especially true when we can benefit from the natural experiments that crises offer.&nbsp;In emerging from our confluence of crises, at least four policy assessments should flow from our experiences.First, expand Medicaid.&nbsp; Here, the pandemic, surging unemployment, and differential racial treatment come together to dramatically demonstrate this need.&nbsp; Even for those with jobs, losing health insurance is one economic jolt away. INSIGHT KANSAS: Taking stock and looking forward

An alumnus of Fort Hays State University and his wife have established two scholarships to help students at the university, one for mathematics and another for physics.&nbsp; Merrill Milham, retired research physicist, and Dr. Ann Davidoff, a retired professor, created the Milham-Wasinger-Davidoff Mathematics Scholarship and the Milham-Wasinger-Davidoff Physics Scholarship.&nbsp; Milham graduated from FHSU in 1960 with degrees in both mathematics and physics. He declared himself a math major in his sophomore year at Fort Hays State and treasures math to this day. He remembers fondly the people who introduced him to the subject. He has vivid memories of Mr. Etter standing at the blackboard casting out nines (I think the older generation will appreciate this, Mr. Marshall’s broad smile as he trundled into class with exam papers and Mr. Toalson as a maestro of the dreaded pop-quiz.&nbsp; As Milham’s college years continued, he developed a passion for physics and declared it as a second major. Physics allowed him to apply the math that he was learning to the real world.&nbsp; Following graduation, he accepted a job offer in physics from Aberdeen Proving Ground, a U.S. Army facility, even though it wasn’t the math job that he had wanted and felt more qualified for.&nbsp; “After a nearly three-day car trip, I arrived in Maryland ready for my first day on the job,” said Milham. “I remember the day well – being sworn in, meeting my section chief and co-workers, and locking the keys in my car.”&nbsp; That day began a 50-year career as a research physicist before Milham retired in 2010. &nbsp;Along the way, he took evening courses in physics at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, which led to a master’s degree. He then waffled for years about pursuing a doctorate. With nearly 30 years of professional experience under his belt, he was bitten by the academic bug and began a doctoral program at the University of Maryland, College Park.&nbsp; Milham’s wife, Ann Davidoff, was something of an opposite. She was attracted to the humanities and studied history and literature in college. She completed her doctoral studies immediately following her undergraduate degree in New York City. Davidoff started her career as an assistant professor teaching psychology at a community college and quickly discovered that the textbooks available weren’t suitable for her students.&nbsp; She began writing an introductory psychology textbook that would not only interest students who had poor academic skills but that would accompany the text with study materials to help students master the content. The first edition of the textbook debuted in 1976, followed by two revisions and several translations.&nbsp; Davidoff taught and revised the text for 17 years before moving on to her next job as a research postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins. From there, she began conducting psychotherapy and psychiatric evaluations at a psychiatric hospital in Baltimore.&nbsp; “My husband was poor when he struggled to fund a college education at Fort Hays State University,” said Davidoff. “He barely managed to pay for his books and tuition at FHSU at $55 per semester in the fall of 1956.”&nbsp; Milham, whose father delivered mail and mother a laundry worker, cut costs by living with his grandparents in Hays while going to school. In the summers, he pumped gasoline in Salina to make ends meet.&nbsp; “I assume that the recipients of these scholarships are like my husband – similarly good at math and physics, but struggling with the much higher costs of getting a degree today,” said Davidoff. “So, I’m happy to be contributing. Invested royalties from sales of my psychology textbook are the major source of funds I contribute to these scholarships.”&nbsp; “Even with tuition among the lowest in the country, many students at Fort Hays State University struggle to pay bills and focus on challenging coursework,” said Dr. Grady Dixon, dean of FHSU’s Peter Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics. “Donor support is an investment in these students, and our affordability means that investors are more likely to get a favorable ROI.”&nbsp; Milham and Davidoff are enjoying life at a retirement community in Maine. Millham’s bookshelf displays 21 of his undergraduate textbooks and he’s currently rereading a book that Mr. Toalson assigned for his MATH-130 course on matrices. &nbsp;&nbsp; “My career in physics wasn’t without its difficulties and struggles, but it also gave me certain unique and lingering satisfactions,” said Milham. “This old student is very grateful to my alma mater, Fort Hays State University, for making it all possible.”&nbsp; Milham and Davidoff established the scholarships by taking advantage of tax free distribution by utilizing the annual IRA charitable rollover, which is available to those 70½ years of age and older. Couple creates math, physics scholarships at FHSU

Thatch control for cool-season lawn grasses such as bluegrass and tall fescue is usually done in the fall, but now is the time we should perform this operation for warm-season turfgrasses such as bermudagrass and zoysiagrass. 

Because these operations thin the lawn, they should be performed when the lawn is in the best position to recover. For warm-season grasses that time is June through July. Buffalograss, our other common warm-season grass, normally does not need to be dethatched. 
 
When thatch is less than one-half inch thick, there is little cause for concern; on the contrary, it may provide some protection to the crown (growing point) of the turfgrass. However, when thatch exceeds one-half inch in thickness, the lawn may start to deteriorate. Thatch is best kept in check by power-raking and/or core-aerating.

If thatch is more than 3/4 inch thick, the lawn should be power-raked. Set the blades just deep enough to pull out the thatch. The lawn can be severely damaged by power-raking too deeply. In some cases, it may be easier to use a sod cutter to remove the existing sod and start over with seed, sprigs or plugs. 
 
If thatch is between one-half and a 3/4- inch, thick, core-aeration is a better choice. The soil-moisture level is important to do a good job of core-aerating. It should be neither too wet nor too dry, and the soil should crumble fairly easily when worked between your fingers. Go over the lawn enough times so that the aeration holes are about 2 inches apart.&nbsp; 
 
Excessive thatch accumulation can be prevented by not over-fertilizing with nitrogen. Frequent, light watering also encourages thatch. Water only when needed, and attempt to wet the entire root zone of the turf with each irrigation. 
 
Finally, where thatch is excessive, control should be viewed as a long-term, integrated process (i.e., to include proper mowing, watering, and fertilizing) rather than a one-shot cure. One power-raking or core-aeration will seldom solve the problem.

DSNWK has teamed up with LiveWell Northwest Kansas Inc. to focus on nurturing and supporting families to improve outcomes for children in northwest Kansas using Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) intervention.&nbsp; This intervention is designed to help families develop critical skills leading to better outcomes for children and thus family preservation.&nbsp;

Fam-Link service at DSNWK is offered to parents and caregivers of babies who are between 6 and 24 months old.&nbsp; Fam-Link strengthens the relationship with the child, while helping the child to learn to regulate behaviors and emotions.&nbsp; DSNWK’s Fam-Link program helps to identify and respond to a baby's signals.&nbsp; As a result, the relationship between parent and child is one that helps to protect him or her from stress, early challenges and adversity.

Hays Regional Airport announces the return of a second flight to Denver International Airport beginning Monday, July 6. This resumption follows a temporary suspension by SkyWest in light of decreased travel demand associated with the COVID-19 coronavirus and is in addition to the current once-daily regional jet service which has been maintained throughout the pandemic.

Second flight to Denver will return to Hays airport in July

LOGAN – One person was arrested after a domestic incident turned into a vehicle rampage in downtown Logan on Wednesday.

The Phillips County Sheriff's Office reported Joan D. Baird, 58, Prairie View, was taken into custody after allegedly ramming another car repeatedly on Main Street. The incident was captured on video and provided to Hays Post courtesy of the Phillips County Review.

The Kansas Supreme Court on Friday remanded the case of a former Hays teacher convicted of child sex crimes back to a Saline County district court.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5df2370d301f75059758e7ce">Brooke Dinkel, 38, who formerly taught in Hays and was a counselor at Smoky Valley Middle school in Lindsborg,</a> appealed her convictions from 2014. She was convicted of two counts of rape of a child under the age of 14.

"Most of Dinkel's claims related to her defense that the alleged victim — K.H. — raped her and that she continued the sexual contact because K.H. was blackmailing her and she had a mental disease or defect," the court said in its summary Friday.

"Writing for a unanimous Kansas Supreme Court, Justice Eric Rosen held a defendant's claim that he or she was forcibly raped is relevant to the crime rape of a child under the age of 14 because it negates the voluntary act requirement. The Supreme Court reversed the Court of Appeals and remanded the case to the district court with directions to hold a hearing on whether Dinkel's trial counsel was ineffective for failing to argue the State did not establish the voluntary act requirement. The Supreme Court retained jurisdiction of the case."

Case of former teacher convicted of sex crimes sent back to district court

Thanks to <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e960241eb7f1705360280a6">additional federal aid</a> in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, two longstanding capital improvement projects at the Hays Regional Airport will cost the city of Hays nothing.&nbsp;

City commissioners Thursday night were quick to praise Airport Director Jamie Salter for her involvement in securing the grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through the Phase III Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

A project to rehabilitate the north terminal apron and correct drainage issues had already been approved for this year, with the FAA picking up 90 percent of the tab, and the city to pay 10 percent.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With the recent addition of the CARES grant of approximately $1 million, two alternate bids were added for new runway markings on the primary runway 16-34 and taxiway connector M1.

The commission accepted the low bid of $1,031,019.10 from&nbsp;Vogts Parga&nbsp;Construction, Newton.&nbsp;There is no cost share required of the city. 

The $201,885  construction engineering agreement with the city's&nbsp;airport engineering consultant, Burns and McDonnell, will also be covered by the extra federal dollars.&nbsp;

The apron work "will have no impact on commercial air service," Salter said, "and is phased to minimize the impact on other airport operations."

She noted the recent <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e9f53aceb7f170536031c1a">reduction of SkyWest/United flights</a> to one a day between Hays and Denver due to the pandemic. "The schedule will go back to roughly what we had before on July 6th," Salter told commissioners.&nbsp;

Removal and restriping of pavement markings&nbsp;will be completed during nighttime hours to limit the impact on operating conditions. Both the main and crosswind runways will be closed for short periods of time.&nbsp;

Salter expects the work to be completed by the end of the year.&nbsp;

A plan to upgrade the crosswind runway 4-22 lighting to a can and&nbsp;conduit system, utilizing LED lighting, was planned for this year with the standard 90/10 cost share.&nbsp;

With the additional CARES grant, the project will now be completely funded by the FAA.

The&nbsp;$692,004 low bid from L&amp;S Electric LLC, Salina, was approved by the commission along with the $171,175 construction engineering agreement with&nbsp;Burns &amp; McDonnell.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2021, after the apron and markings project is done.&nbsp;

The crosswind&nbsp;runway will be closed for the duration of construction.&nbsp;The main runway will closed for short periods of time as needed.&nbsp;

A third airport project is part of the 2020 Street Maintenance Program.&nbsp; It has also been upgraded and will be completely funded by the FAA.

The airport fuel road was already scheduled for chip sealing. 

The project has been changed to an asphalt overlay, along with&nbsp;storm sewer and grading, with a change order&nbsp;to an existing contract with APAC-Hays for similar work on General Custer Road. The $94,188 cost of the change order will be reimbursed to the city by the FAA.&nbsp;

"I don't think the FAA and the federal government just decided Hays, Kansas, of all places, deserves all this," said Michael Berges.

The commissioner described Salter as a "very good, proactive airport manager" who has been "making lemonade out of lemons."

"You worked the contacts that you know you have. You looked through the CARES Act legislation and figured out how can we make the best out of this," Berges said.&nbsp;

"I think in years to come other communities are going to be moaning that they're lagging behind. ... Hays is gonna stand up and say 'it was a headache during the pandemic and the economic downturns, but we're coming out of this shining.'"

Salter estimated the city is saving $180,000 to $200,000 by not having to pay the usual 10 percent cost share to the FAA for the two airport projects.

Maintenance projects, such as the runway marking restriping, are usually not eligible for the FAA cost/share program, saving the city another $400,000.

The workshops will be presented by Nancy Jackson of Generous
Change, Lawrence. Jackson started her own nonprofit, has served on dozens
of boards, raised tens of millions of dollars, and supported board members all
across Kansas. 

The workshop is designed to help board members and staff feel comfortable
helping to raise funds for the nonprofit organizations they serve. Each
workshop will include a light meal, and couple hours of conversation and
laughter. 

For those who wish are not sure about gathering yet, Nancy
will lead two, interactive virtual workshops on Wednesday,

Virtual, in-person nonprofit development workshops offered free

Variety improves disease resistance of previous western Kansas lines

A researcher at the Agricultural Research Center in Hays has taken a good thing and made it even better.

Wheat scientist Guorong Zhang announced in early June that he is ready to release a hard red winter wheat variety that is suited for the drier, western Kansas climate. The new variety does not yet have a name, but it builds off the success of a hard red wheat released just one year earlier, KS Dallas.

“This variety has high yield potential and strong resistance to wheat streak mosaic virus, similar to KS Dallas,” Zhang said. “But it also has good resistance to stripe rust, Hessian fly and soilborne mosaic virus, which KS Dallas does not have.”

In trials held from 2017 to 2019, KS Dallas averaged yields of 79.8 bushels per acre, giving Zhang a pretty good indication of the yield potential for his new variety.

He is expecting to apply to the K-State plant genetic material release committee for its release this summer and if approved, the variety will be named and foundation seed released this fall, he said.

The wheat improvement program at the research center in Hays has been developing varieties suited to western Kansas since the early 1900s. The center works in cooperation with the wheat improvement program at K-State’s main campus in Manhattan, which focuses on new varieties for central and eastern Kansas.

Zhang said the Hays program’s goals for hard winter wheat include high yield, good end-use qualities and drought tolerance. Historically, researchers there have focused on varieties that carry resistance to wheat streak mosaic virus, Triticum mosaic virus, barley yellow dwarf virus, stripe rust, leaf rust, stem rust and Hessian fly.

 </figure><h2>Variety improves disease resistance of previous western Kansas lines</h2>K-State Research &amp; ExtensionA researcher at the Agricultural Research Center in Hays has taken a good thing and made it even better.Wheat scientist Guorong Zhang announced in early June that he is ready to release a hard red winter wheat variety that is suited for the drier, western Kansas climate. The new variety does not yet have a name, but it builds off the success of a hard red wheat released just one year earlier, KS Dallas.“This variety has high yield potential and strong resistance to wheat streak mosaic virus, similar to KS Dallas,” Zhang said. “But it also has good resistance to stripe rust, Hessian fly and soilborne mosaic virus, which KS Dallas does not have.”In trials held from 2017 to 2019, KS Dallas averaged yields of 79.8 bushels per acre, giving Zhang a pretty good indication of the yield potential for his new variety.He is expecting to apply to the K-State plant genetic material release committee for its release this summer and if approved, the variety will be named and foundation seed released this fall, he said.The wheat improvement program at the research center in Hays has been developing varieties suited to western Kansas since the early 1900s. The center works in cooperation with the wheat improvement program at K-State’s main campus in Manhattan, which focuses on new varieties for central and eastern Kansas.Zhang said the Hays program’s goals for hard winter wheat include high yield, good end-use qualities and drought tolerance. Hays research center to release new hard red wheat

Hays Christian Church is hosting a free drive-through smile and hygiene kit giveaway on Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Hays Christian Church parking lot, 22nd &amp; Marshall Road. 

Each individual will receive a smile kit donated by Delta Dental, soap and deodorant. 

In addition, each family can enter to win a bag full of groceries that will be given away at the conclusion of the event. 

A total of three grocery bags will be given away, limit one entry per household. 

The kits and giveaway are open to anyone in the community. Kits are limited to supply on hand.
