Lawrence photographer Ann Dean gave a presentation Thursday night at the Hays Public Library titled "The Power of Imagery and the Civil Rights Experience. " 

The presentation was part of a month-long "Sorting Out Race" speakers series.

"Really, since its inception, photography has been used for raising awareness of social issues, provoking emotions, provoking thoughts and reshaping our perceptions of how we see the world," Dean said.

"The really great photographers open your eyes to the world around you. Their images raise awareness. They make you feel emotion."

She said photography can help us understand our past and better our understanding of each other.

Photography was essential to documenting the Civil Rights Movement and spreading its images throughout the United States and the world, she said.

Dean shared multiple photos of Frederick Douglass, who she said equated photography with freedom.

Frederick Douglass said, "When you look at a photograph of me, you will never deny that I am a man worthy of freedom and worthy of citizenship. You will look me in the eye and see my humanity."

Dean said Blacks in mass media were vilified, demonized, twisted, ghoulish versions of themselves and turned into racist tropes like coons,&nbsp;pickaninnies,&nbsp;mammies, sambos and Uncle Toms.&nbsp;

The early 1900s "coon postcards" depicted Blacks as animalistic, simplistic, and happy to eat watermelon. Even Black children were depicted as prone to violent behavior.

Photography allowed Black Americans to be seen for who they really were: dignified, fully realized human beings.

Dean included a photo of her mother and father attending a college football game in 1952. Her parents were dressed to the nines. Her father wore a suit, and her mother wore a skirt and white gloves. The students in the audience giggled as Dean acknowledged this is not how students today dress to attend a football game.

"They look so proud and so beautiful," Dean said. "It's my favorite picture of my parents back in 1952."

Shortly after that picture was taken, her parents married and moved to St. Louis. When they tried to purchase a home, the neighbors drew up a petition to keep them from buying the house.

They purchased the home anyway. After many years of living side by side, members of families who had signed that petition became lifelong friends, Dean said.

During the Civil Rights Movement, Black and white photographers used their lenses to affect change.

"They used the power of these still images to expose these atrocities that were occurring," Dean said.

They were nonbiased and respected in their communities, she said. However, they put themselves in harm's way. She showed a picture of one photographer after a protest who was wearing a gas mask.&nbsp;

"They were trying to tell the truth. They were trying to get something seen that was not seen," Dean said.

Gordon Parks, a native Kansan, was a significant photographer during the Civil Rights Movement and the first Black photographer for Life magazine.

He was noted for taking portraits of average Black Americans and icons such as Malcolm X.

In his memoir, he described his camera as his choice of weapon against all things he disliked about living in America as a Black man.

In 1947, he photographed the doll tests. Scientists presented Black children with black and white dolls.

They were asked to choose which doll they preferred, which was good and which was bad. Most children chose the white doll.&nbsp;

When the children were asked to identify which doll was most like them, they became upset when they had to identify with the black doll. Some even ran out of the room in tears.

"The study did reveal there was psychological damage caused by segregation and discrimination," Dean said.

This study was used to argue the Brown v. Board of Education case, which led to the desegregation of schools and the ruling that separate was not equal.

Dean shared an image of Elizabeth Eckford, known as one of the Little Rock Nine, trying to enter her high school. The photo was later known as "The Scream" because of the young white woman, Hazel Bryan, behind Eckford in the photograph screaming at her.&nbsp;

Dean said the image followed both women throughout their lives. In 1963, Bryan had a change of heart and apologized to Eckford.

Charles Moore, a white photographer, said white police officers and mobs seemed to enjoy beating on these people.

"They had such hatred in their faces as they committed these atrocities and spewed out their anger and their venom," he said.

The photographers were targets, Dean said.

Moore reported being taunted, yelled at, cursed out, having things thrown at him, followed and threatened.

His images were credited with helping quicken the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Dean said.

Dean shared a photo of Peter, also known as Gordon, who had been enslaved and escaped in 1863. The image depicts Peter's badly scarred back from beatings.

She juxtaposed that image with that of a man wearing a jacket at the Selma voting rights march in 1965.

"This identified man is clearly fed up. He has his message of utter frustration written across his back. ... This was a bold message this man was displaying in a very dangerous environment where he could easily become a target for violence," Dean said.

Spider Martin had the largest collection of photographs from the Civil Rights Movement.&nbsp;

Martin Luther King Jr. once told Spider Martin, "We could have marched and protested forever, but if it weren't for guys like you, it would have been for nothing. The whole world saw your pictures and that is why the Voting Rights Act actually passed."

Dean shared an image from 2015 from the cover of Time magazine. It shows a young man running away from a large line of police during protests after the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore.

"The same things are going on almost 50 years later," Dean said. "And the same issues at the forefront—poverty, equal education, housing, voting rights, unemployment. We are now still at that tipping point."

Photographers today are trying to show the struggle for equality, Dean said.

They are trying to make sure the lives of folks like George Floyd, Breoann Taylor, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray and so many others are not forgotten and their lives were not taken in vain, Dean said.

"Through photography, through imagery we can relive these incidents from so long ago. We can see whipped Peter from the 1800s and think where imagery started and where it's come today—the journey it has taken to give us a mirror of ourselves to make us feel these emotions," Dean said.

At the conclusion of the lecture, Dean took questions and heard comments. A man in the audience said he was born in Birmingham in the 1950s and grow up there during the Civil Rights Movement.

He said he was raised in a racist environment.&nbsp;

Through tears, he said he was walking down the sidewalk when he was 12, and a 70-year-old Black man stepped into the street to let him pass.

KDHE officials issued the advisory because the city cannot currently maintain the minimum required chlorine residual. Failure to maintain required chlorine residual levels may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Boil Water Advisory issued for Bazine in Ness County

Hays High DECA is excited to return to a traditional food drive that benefits the Community Assistance Center. This year's food drive, Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat, will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, with the collections beginning at 6:00 pm and ending by 9:00 pm.

Youth and adult volunteers from Hays give of their time to make this food drive a success. To assure residents that the items collected are for the Community Assistance Center, all volunteers will be wearing an identification badge with their group name clearly printed. Please leave items on the porch if donors will not be home or do not want someone ringing the doorbell.

Possible items to donate include canned fruits and vegetables, boxed food items such Hamburger Helper or mac and cheese, jars of baby food, and any non- perishable food items. If you prefer to make a cash donation, volunteers can accept cash or check donations the day of the food drive. Checks are always welcome and can be made payable to the Community Assistance Center and may be mailed to their address at 208 E 12th St. Hays, KS.

The Community Assistance Center is a 501 (C) 3 nonprofit organization that helps Ellis County families &amp; individuals of low or no income, transients, homeless, &amp; disaster victims with food, clothing, and household items. The Community Assistance Center does not receive any federal, state, county or local funds and is funded by donations only.

Any house missed or those living in a rural area may take food items to the Community Assistance Center in Hays located at 12th and Oak until noon November 29, 2024.

Hays Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat food drive planned

K-State Research and Extension Cottonwood District will be hosting our annual make and take pizza night in honor of National Family Day on September 23, 2024 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at our office located at 601 Main Street in Hays.

Family Day is a national effort to promote family dinners. Research shows family dinners are a great way to reduce youth substance abuse and other risky behaviors as reported by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Colombia University. Not only are family dinners a way to bring families together but young children can also learn valuable life skills. Cooking is an important life skill for children to learn before they grow up and are out on their own. Knowing how to plan menus, budget for food, and follow a recipe provides many skills that will help children as they become adults. Knowing how to cook meals versus heating something up from a box can also aid our children’s health. Processed foods often have many added ingredients that can lead to health issues. Having children help in the kitchen teaches them math skills and to follow directions. When children help prepare meals they tend to have more motivation to eat the meal as well. If they have taken part in preparation they are more likely to try new foods and recipes. This can be particularly helpful for picky eaters!

Hays Prairie Winds Kite Show delights the crowd Sunday afternoon

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said in an email Monday that the department received a report of a written threat of a bomb inside Hays Middle School.&nbsp; 

The threat was texted to Hays resident, who reported it to the Hays Police Department, he said. Other threats were later texted to the Ellis County Communication Center, he said.

"Thank you to the Hays resident for sharing the message and helping us to ensure the safety of the students," Scheibler said.

The Hays Police Department worked with members of the USD 489 staff to fully investigate the reported threat. The school and the grounds were searched by members of the Hays Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol Emergency Service Unit (canines), Scheibler said.

During the investigation, the Hays Police Department also identified and located the person who made all the threats against Hays Middle School, Scheibler said.

"The Hays Police Department works closely with USD 489 to ensure the safety and well-being of all the students, and we are grateful for this partnership. I am also especially grateful for the quick response of the Kansas Highway Patrol and their assistance with this investigation, Scheibler said.

The following message was sent to Hays Middle School parents regarding a bomb threat on Sunday at Hays Middle School.

On Sunday, September 15, Hays city law enforcement received a report regarding a potential explosive device at Hays Middle School (HMS). In response, the Hays Police Department, along with bomb-sniffing dogs from the Kansas Highway Patrol, thoroughly searched the premises. No explosives were found, and the building has been declared safe and secure.

The Hays Police Department has made an arrest in connection with the threat, though the investigation remains ongoing. Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priority. We take all threats seriously and conduct thorough investigations to ensure the security of our school community.

We are sharing this information with you to provide clarity and to help you discuss the situation with your child. It is important that they understand the gravity of such threats, as well as the fact that the school has been deemed safe for classes to resume on Tuesday.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your continued support of our students' safety and education.

UPDATE: Hays Middle School receives bomb threat Sunday; search clears school

Eighty-two race teams checked into the legendary RPM Speedway for championship night racing. Taking home feature winners were Gage Porter in the sport compacts, Blaine Walt in the sport mods, Zach Olmstead in the hobby stocks, Kyle Pfeifer in the stock cars and Daniel Gottschalk in the modifieds. Taking home 2024 season track championships were Rileigh Flohrs in the sport compact, Zach Olmstead in the hobby stock, Blaine Walt in the sport mod, Kyle Pfeifer in the stock car and Daniel Gottschalk in the modifieds.

The sport compacts started the evening off, they ran two six-lap heat races won by Kaishen Brack and Alison Jeske. Their fifteen-lap feature event started with a front row of Kaishen Brack and Alison Jeske, Kaishen Brack led early on but quickly Kyle Mortensen and Gage Porter would fight for second, with Porter grabbing the lead after a few laps. Jake Schwien broke after a few laps, and that would hand the championship over to Rileigh Flohrs, meanwhile nobody could catch Gage Porter as he ran away with the feature win. Gage Porter picked up win number five on the season, second was track champion Rileigh Flohrs, third was Connor Schwien, fourth was Kyle Mortensen and fifth was Kaishen Brack. Hard charger in the event was Rileigh Flohrs who gained seven spots, other nice runs included Connor Schwien up five spots and Gage Porter up three spots.

The hobby stocks were second on the program, they ran three eight-lap heat races won by Cody Williams, Colton Czapanskiy and Trent Matson. Their twenty-lap feature main event started with a front row of Blake Holmes and Danny Schulte. Holmes got the early lead, meanwhile Zach Olmstead, Jonathan Saliba and Cody Williams were charging to the front. Dion Priddy gained the lead on lap two, with Williams right behind him. Lap three saw Tyler Heath spin, he was able to continue. The field restarted and Williams found the lead. Williams led for a while, before Zach Olmstead was able to get by. Once Olmstead found the lead, he cruised to the feature win, along with grabbing the track championship. Second was Cody Williams, third was Colton Czapanskiy, fourth was Dylan Bell and fifth was Trent Matson. Hard charger in the event was Dylan Bell who gained fifteen spots, other nice runs included Zach Olmstead up nine spots, and Colton Czapanskiy up eight spots.

The sport mods were third on the program, they ran three eight-lap heat races won by Brianna Maughlin, Cody Gearhart and Blaine Walt. Their twenty-lap feature event started with a front row of Cody Gearhart and Dalton Bell. Blaine Walt started tenth in the feature event, it took a handful of laps, but he found himself up front, and then got to the lead, and stormed away with the feature event win, securing a track championship after Brianna Maughlin was forced to retire from the race prematurely with an issue. Blaine Walt picked up his fifth RPM track championship, after collecting feature win number six on the season. Second was Tyler Watts, third was Cody Gearhart, fourth was Adam Weber and fifth was Cody Williams. Hard chargers in the event were Cody Williams, Preston Donovan, Ethan Zweygardt, and Justin Meserve who each gained eleven spots. Other nice runs included Blaine Walt up nine spots, Dallas Chambers up seven spots, Dalton Chambers up six spots, and Tyler Watts along with Jeff Hunter gained five spots each.

The stock cars were fourth on the program, they ran two eight-lap heat races won by Garrett Hager and Tathan Burkhart. Their twenty-lap feature event started with a front row of Troy Burkhart and Garrett Hager. Troy Burkhart led the bulk of the first half of the feature event, before Kyle Pfeifer was able to get by Tathan Burkhart held on to second or third throughout the feature event but was unable to find victory lane to have a shot at the championship. Kyle Pfeifer picked up the feature win, along with the track championship. Second was Tathan Burkhart, third was Garrett Hager, fourth was Tim Watts and fifth was Troy Burkhart. Hard charger in the event was Kyle Pfeifer who gained three spots.

The modifieds closed out the show, they ran two eight-lap heat races won by Clay Money and Dylan Sherfick. Their twenty-lap feature event started with a front row of Kaid Calhoon and Dalton Murphy, quickly Jake Nightingale found the race lead, and led the first eight laps before breaking a right rear shock. The broken shock occurred on a restart which formed a parking lot including championship contenders Daniel Gottschalk and Clay Money, both returned to the feature event. Daniel Gottschalk charged from the rear of the field to win the race and collect his fourth track championship at RPM Speedway. Second was Dylan Sherfick, third was Kyle Rohleder, fourth was Clay Money and fifth was Tyler Harr. Hard chargers in the event were Daniel Gottschalk and Ayden Steffens who gained eight spots, other nice runs included Tyler Harr up seven spots, and Dylan Sherfick up five spots.

RPM's next event will be Fall Nationals, which take place Oct. 3, 4 and 5. This big show to end the year will feature all five regular IMCA classes, along with Dirt Car Late Models, and the local cruisers class.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco is likely headed to injured reserve after hurting his right ankle in the final minutes of Sunday's win over the Cincinnati Bengals, a person with knowledge of the injury told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because Pacheco was undergoing additional testing, and the team was not prepared to announce the results. Pacheco had X-rays on Sunday night and was still due to have an MRI exam on the ankle.

“I don't have a timeframe on Pacheco,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said on a conference call with reporters later Monday, "but I know it won't be this week, and he'll probably be more than that. So obviously, it's going to take a little bit of time there."

Pacheco was seen leaving Arrowhead Stadium in a walking boot and using crutches, shortly after Harrison Butker kicked a 51-yard field goal with no time remaining to lift the Super Bowl champions to a 26-25 victory over the Bengals. Pacheco was hurt on the first play of that final possession, when he plunged forward into the offensive line and appeared to roll his ankle.

Pacheco, who has been part of the Chiefs’ back-to-back Super Bowl championship teams, ran for 45 yards and a touchdown in their season-opening win over Baltimore, and he had 90 yards rushing and a score before leaving Sunday’s game.

“I haven't seen him today but I talked to him twice last night, so I think he's in a better place than he was,” Reid said. “Here's a guy that loves to play the game. He had tears. He was emotional. But you don't ever want to lose it. It's an emotional sport, and that kid — nobody likes to play more than he likes to play.”

The Chiefs, who put wide receiver Marquise Brown on injured reserve last week because of impending shoulder surgery, were already short-handed at running back even before Pacheco hurt his ankle. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is on the non-football illness list and must miss two more regular-season games before he can return to the active roster.

Reid said his potential return in Week 5 was among the many factors the team was weighing Monday. Undrafted rookie Carson Steele, who had seven carries for 24 yards but also lost a fumble on Sunday, and Samaje Perine, who signed with Kansas City on Aug. 30 and played just nine snaps against the Bengals, are the only other active running backs.

Keaontay Ingram and Emani Bailey are available on Chiefs' practice squad, or the Chiefs could look at practice squads of other teams for players to sign to their active roster. Deneric Prince, who was with them in camp, is on the Miami practice squad.

“We will go with the guys that we have here now,” Reid said. (General manager Brett) Veach is going through his lists and looking at people, and we'll just see where that goes. But we're blessed to have some good people here."

MANHATTAN, Kan. -&nbsp;Thanks to his 71-yard punt return touchdown to help fuel Kansas State’s 31-7 victory over Arizona, sophomore running back&nbsp;Dylan Edwards&nbsp;has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

It is the second weekly conference honor in Edwards’ career as he was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after his first-career game last season while playing for Colorado. Edwards’ honor this year is the Wildcats’ 64th&nbsp;special teams weekly accolade since 1997 and the third-straight year a Wildcat has been honored for their work on special teams.

With the game tied, 7-7, just six seconds into the second quarter, Edwards fielded a punt on one hop, went left toward the K-State sideline and out-ran the Arizona coverage unit for the score. He became the first K-State running back to record a punt-return touchdown since Darren Sproles took one back 63 yards against Kansas in 2003, while it was the longest by a K-State running back since David Allen had a 74-yarder at Texas in 1999. It was also K-State’s first non-blocked punt-return touchdown since the second game of the 2022 season.

A product of Derby, Kansas, Edwards has recorded four touchdowns on just 22 touches this year with two on the ground, one via a reception and one on a punt return. He is the first Wildcat with a rushing, receiving and return touchdown over the first three games of a season since Deon Murphy did so in 2007. He leads the Big 12 with a 27.0-yard return average this season.

Kansas State, which checks in at No. 13 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, opens its Big 12 schedule on Saturday night in a 9:30 p.m. (CT) contest at BYU. The game will be shown on ESPN.

DENVER (AP) — Justin Fields and the Pittsburgh Steelers squeaked past the sputtering Denver Broncos 13-6 on Sunday with Russell Wilson reprising his bitter role as sideline spectator in the Mile High City.

Wilson’s much-anticipated return to Denver to face the team that replaced him first with journeyman Jarrett Stidham, then with rookie Bo Nix, fizzled into a footnote when he was relegated to emergency QB status as a strained calf sidelined him for the&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/JomboyMedia/status/1832869554734645504">second straight week</a>.

That didn't stop Steelers coach Mike Tomlin from giving Wilson a game ball in the victorious visitors locker room.

“It was nice to get him a win,” Fields said of Wilson in his return to Denver.

Fields threw a touchdown pass and finished 13 for 20 for 117 yards with no interceptions to help Pittsburgh (2-0) beat the Broncos (0-2) for the third consecutive time.

“It’s always hard to win in this league, so being able to start out 2-0, with two away games has been great,” said Fields, who won his first start 18-10 at Atlanta in another solid-if-not-spectacular performance. "But we’ve got to be better. We’ve got to stop the penalties, stuff like that. We ought to be better, including me.

“We get that and the way our defense is playing, we get rolling on offense, scoring 28 points-plus, we’ll be in good shape.”

Although Nix threw for 246 yards on 20-of-35 passing, he never found the end zone and was intercepted twice. And like Fields, he was sacked twice.

Broncos icon Peyton Manning often cracks wise about hoping someone comes along and breaks his NFL record of 28 interceptions as a rookie. And with four passes picked off so far, Nix is on pace to do just that.

Nix, who had a pair of turnovers deep in Seattle’s territory in his NFL debut, was intercepted by Cory Trice Jr. in the back of the end zone in the third quarter, squelching Denver's best drive, which featured completions of 26 yards to Courtland Sutton and&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/1835443140750438834">50 yards</a>&nbsp;to Josh Reynolds that put the Broncos on the Steelers 6.

“That was just a bad decision. Can't do that,” said Nix, who had this to add when asked again to describe what exacly happened: “Yeah, dropped back. Threw it to the other team.”

On Pittsburgh's ensuing drive, Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain II's third penalty of the game — a 37-yard pass interference — set up Chris Bowell for his second field goal, this one from 53 yards, to make it 13-0 late in the third quarter.

The Broncos faced fourth-and-6 from the Pittsburgh 16 when coach Sean Payton decided to send out kicker Wil Lutz for a 35-yard field goal with 10:42 remaining, making it 13-3 and keeping a two-score deficit alive.

Another drive stalled at the Steelers 11 and Lutz was good from 29 yards with 1:54 left. With one timeout remaining, Payton chose to kick it deep rather than declare an onside kick.

The Broncos held but only had 9 seconds left when they got the ball back at their 19 and Damontae Kazee intercepted Nix's final heave as time expired.

Wilson’s tumultuous two-year stint in Denver featured an 11-19 record, a head coach who didn’t make it through his first season in Nathaniel Hackett and a year with Payton, for whom Wilson pined to play earlier in his career but whose pairing imploded during their one season together.

Wilson ended his stint in Denver on the bench and the Broncos released him in March even though their split triggered a record $85 million in dead cap charges over two years. Wilson signed for the veteran’s minimum ($1.21 million) in Pittsburgh, meaning the Broncos are on the hook for $37.79 million of his 2024 salary.

So, the Broncos are paying the price in more ways than one for their split with Wilson. They're trying to move on, but it has been hard.

“We can't let this train continue to roll the way that it's rolling,” said Sutton, who had just one catch. “We have to find a way to put it back on track as quickly as we possibly can.”

Payton is 1-3 since going 7-8 when Wilson was his quarterback. The Broncos' scoring average has dipped from 21.7 points per game with Wilston to 14.0 without him and their offensive output has fallen from 329.7 yards on average to 281.5.

In 20 drives (excluding end of half) under Nix so far, the Broncos have just two field goals and two touchdowns to go with 11 punts, three interceptions and two turnovers on downs.
