Boil Water Advisory issued for Bazine in Ness County

Hays High DECA is excited to return to a traditional food drive that benefits the Community Assistance Center. This year's food drive, Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat, will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, with the collections beginning at 6:00 pm and ending by 9:00 pm.

Youth and adult volunteers from Hays give of their time to make this food drive a success. To assure residents that the items collected are for the Community Assistance Center, all volunteers will be wearing an identification badge with their group name clearly printed. Please leave items on the porch if donors will not be home or do not want someone ringing the doorbell.

Possible items to donate include canned fruits and vegetables, boxed food items such Hamburger Helper or mac and cheese, jars of baby food, and any non- perishable food items. If you prefer to make a cash donation, volunteers can accept cash or check donations the day of the food drive. Checks are always welcome and can be made payable to the Community Assistance Center and may be mailed to their address at 208 E 12th St. Hays, KS.

The Community Assistance Center is a 501 (C) 3 nonprofit organization that helps Ellis County families &amp; individuals of low or no income, transients, homeless, &amp; disaster victims with food, clothing, and household items. The Community Assistance Center does not receive any federal, state, county or local funds and is funded by donations only.

Any house missed or those living in a rural area may take food items to the Community Assistance Center in Hays located at 12th and Oak until noon November 29, 2024.

Hays Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat food drive planned

K-State Research and Extension Cottonwood District will be hosting our annual make and take pizza night in honor of National Family Day on September 23, 2024 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at our office located at 601 Main Street in Hays.

Family Day is a national effort to promote family dinners. Research shows family dinners are a great way to reduce youth substance abuse and other risky behaviors as reported by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Colombia University. Not only are family dinners a way to bring families together but young children can also learn valuable life skills. Cooking is an important life skill for children to learn before they grow up and are out on their own. Knowing how to plan menus, budget for food, and follow a recipe provides many skills that will help children as they become adults. Knowing how to cook meals versus heating something up from a box can also aid our children’s health. Processed foods often have many added ingredients that can lead to health issues. Having children help in the kitchen teaches them math skills and to follow directions. When children help prepare meals they tend to have more motivation to eat the meal as well. If they have taken part in preparation they are more likely to try new foods and recipes. This can be particularly helpful for picky eaters!

Living Waters Prayer Chapel, 1410 Toulon Ave., will present a Gospel Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19.

The concert will feature Stephanie Dawn, a singer and speaker, who has been blind since birth. She will be accompanied by her stepfather, Dann Thornton, a pianist and arranger. Both are with Dawn of Hope Ministry, Inc. The concert is free and open to the public.

“Stephanie will be sharing her powerful testimony, engaging voice, and exuberant personality into a captivating and uplifting program that draws the listener closer to God, church Pastor Mike Bremer said in a news release.

“Her enthusiastic love for Jesus lifts her above the many challenges she faces in addition to her blindness. This love is inspiring to others facing challenges in their own lives,” Bremer said.

According to her website, in addition to her blindness, Dawn faces other health challenges. When she first sang the chorus to “Jesus Loves Me” at the age of 11 months, her mother said she knew God had given her daughter a special gift.

At the age of 3, Dawn sang her first solo in church, and when she was 9 she recorded her first album and began traveling. Since then, she has performed at the John F. Kennedy Center and has been featured on “The 700 Club,” “3ABN,” and “The Voice of Prophecy.”

After a period of not traveling during COVID, she and her parents bought a motorhome in 2021—it is now their only home--and they travel around the United States, where Dawn performs at churches, camps, and other venues.

The Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau is hosting a free Kite Show for the community on Sunday, September 15 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex, 1376 U.S. Hwy. 183 Bypass.

This family-friendly event will feature the spectacular giant kite displays of Great American Kites &amp; Events featuring some of the world’s largest kites.

<a>“This event is the perfect way to end the summer season,” said Brittney Squire, Marketing Manager at the Hays CVB. “Guests should feel confident that even if the wind doesn’t cooperate, there will be plenty of activities on site for the whole family to enjoy.”</a>

Several food trucks are confirmed to be at the event including Snow Cone Express, Chilly Charlie’s (freeze dried candy), Triple C Lemonade Stand, Taco Riendo, El Primo Burgers, and Floyd’s Smoke Shack. These vendors will set up in the sports complex parking lot. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, coolers, and drinks into the sports complex, but glass bottles are not allowed. Pets on leashes are allowed at the complex, but owners must clean up after their pets.

Other activities include yard games sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Ellis County, the bookmobile courtesy of the Hays Public Library, the Fort Hays State University Makervan, and live animals from the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.

CVB hosts the Hays Prairie Winds Kite Show

On Labor Day in Natoma, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 109 hosted free family bingo for free mystery prizes. 

Following the annual parade, the American Legion Hall was open for 2 1/2 hours of excitement playing bingo during the annual community celebration. 

During the afternoon, the Auxiliary invited the community to support the Fort Dodge Soldiers Home Christmas store for veterans, monetarily and by donating a wide assortment of gift items. 

More than 100 veteran residents will shop free of charge for their families and for themselves during the event in December. 

A list of needed items can be found posted throughout the town and by checking the Natoma Face Book page. 

Auxiliary members continue to provide 22 annual projects through their volunteer efforts for veterans, their families, children, youth, and community. 

For information in joining the American Legion Auxiliary, or in helping veterans in the Fort Dodge Soldiers’ Home project, contact Jenjer Murphy, Unit 109 president.&nbsp;

🎥 CVB: Community events in Hays during September

Our annual Pioneer Day will be held on October 12th with a focus on the history of Nicodemus through a bike tour over gravel roads throughout the historic Nicodemus Township and neighboring Wild Horse Township, and town of Damar. For the serious bikers the 33.5mile tour is recommended. You’ll see the entire area with stops at 14 historic signs along the way. For a shorter trek we recommend the 21.5-mile tour. It will include 11 sign stops, if you trek only within the historic Nicodemus township, 13 signs if you go into Bogue and see 2 other signs then return to Nicodemus. 4 SAGS stops will provide riders with water, snacks and fruit. The SAGS are sponsored by Walmart of Hays, The Kansas Black Farmers Association, The Citizens of Bogue, and the Switzer/KSU Ag Camp for Youth. Registration can be done on line at nicodemushistoricalsociety.org. Register before Sept. 27th to ensure that you get a t-shirt!

When riders, guests, and spectators arrive at the Visitor Center for registration, they will be treated to a FREE ALL YOU CAN EAT BREAKFAST 8 a.m.-10:00 a.m. at ERNESTINE’S BBQ MUSEUM.  </figure>SubmittedOur annual Pioneer Day will be held on October 12th with a focus on the history of Nicodemus through a bike tour over gravel roads throughout the historic Nicodemus Township and neighboring Wild Horse Township, and town of Damar. For the serious bikers the 33.5mile tour is recommended. You’ll see the entire area with stops at 14 historic signs along the way. For a shorter trek we recommend the 21.5-mile tour. It will include 11 sign stops, if you trek only within the historic Nicodemus township, 13 signs if you go into Bogue and see 2 other signs then return to Nicodemus. 4 SAGS stops will provide riders with water, snacks and fruit. The SAGS are sponsored by Walmart of Hays, The Kansas Black Farmers Association, The Citizens of Bogue, and the Switzer/KSU Ag Camp for Youth. Historic Nicodemus Township Bike Tour scheduled

24/7 Travel Store is excited to kick off our 7th annual Food Bank Fill-Up campaign, “Driving Out Hunger. Together.” This month-long effort, which runs through September, will help local food banks across Kansas by matching donations up to $3,000 per store.

“At 24/7 Travel Store, giving back is a big part of who we are,” said Ted Augustine, President of 24/7 Travel Store. “Our Food Bank Fill-Up is a powerful way for us to team up with our customers and help those in need right here in our local communities. We’re grateful for the support we see each year and are proud to continue this tradition.”

The highlight of this year’s campaign is our “Hunger Action Day” event on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Food Bank representatives will be on-site at each of our stores, with times varying by location, to engage with customers and educate them on the available food bank services. They will also explain how the funds raised will be used and encourage individuals to give. On this day, we’ll also be accepting food donations in addition to monetary contributions.

The campaign has garnered strong support year after year, and Jackie Hynes, Director of Marketing at 24/7 Travel Store, is looking forward to this year’s efforts. "This will be my third year coordinating the Food Bank Fill-Up, and I’m continually inspired by the dedication of our team and the generosity of our community," Hynes said. "Through this campaign, I’ve had the opportunity to learn about the incredible work our Kansas food banks do, often relying solely on community support without access to state or grant funding. I’m proud of the efforts we all put in to support such a tremendous need and make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most."

Beginning Thursday at approximately 8 a.m., part of Ash Street between 19th and 20th Streets in Hays will be closed for a sewer line replacement. 

Any residents affected by this project will be notified for any interruption of services and traffic control will be set in areas of work being completed.&nbsp;

The city of Hays regrets any inconvenience this may cause to the public.

'Swords into Plowshares' scheduled Saturday in Hays

The Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division is
announcing that an asphalt sealing project will be taking place on Tuesday,
September 3rd, beginning at 7:30 a.m. 

The project will take place on Highway 40, beginning at
Cathedral Avenue and ending at Canterbury Drive. 

This area will be restricted to one-lane traffic. Motorists
traveling this route should expect traffic delays and are encouraged to use
other routes. 

The project is expected to be completed by 4:00p.m. on
Wednesday, September 4th, pending weather conditions.
