TOPEKA —&nbsp;Multiple factors merged to create a fuel shortage affecting western Kansas and three other Midwest states, and one expert expects it to take months for fuel storage capacity to return to normal.

Brian Posler, executive director of Fuel True, said the complex system that maintains fuel stores to avoid shortages was hit by several unusual events this year. Fuel True is a nonprofit trade association representing Kansas fuel distributors and convenience stores.&nbsp;

Although the storage tanks that hold as much as 500,000 gallons of fuel may take some time to replenish, Charlie Robinson, owner of Robinson Oil Co. in Garden City, is grateful fuel supplies at terminals started returning to normal last week.

Robinson’s company markets fuel, buying it from fuel terminals and then delivering it to the end user, typically smaller users such as farms and feedlots. Typically he buys fuel from the Scott City terminal located closest to his business. There also are terminals in McPherson, Salina and Concordia that serve western Kansas, which is the challenge, he said.&nbsp;

“What accentuates our problem out here is the logistical distance between terminals,” he said.&nbsp;

Beginning in March, nearby terminals began to have low or no supplies of diesel and eventually even regular gasoline, Robinson said. These last two months have been “absolutely unusual”during his 40 years in the oil business, he added.

“The Scott City terminal, we did not go there for six weeks to two months to get product. They had nothing to offer us up there,” Robinson said. “We pulled product out of Enid, Oklahoma, which would be about 250 miles, and then McPherson, which is a couple of hundred miles.”

Because of lines at the terminal as truckers waited to fill up, a driver who could usually get two loads of fuel in one day would only have time to get one because they’re only allowed to drive a certain amount of time before taking a break, Robinson said.&nbsp;

To address that situation, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued an emergency declaration in mid May for Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, and then updated it May 23 to include South Dakota. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/emergency/amended-regional-emergency-declaration-and-extension-state-emergency-declarations" target="_blank">declaration temporarily lifts</a>&nbsp;some regulations, such as how many hours a truck driver can be on the road before taking a mandatory break, so that motor carriers can better respond to the shortages.&nbsp;

Truck drivers were spending hours waiting in line and needed flexibility in driving hours, which the emergency declaration offered, Posler said. The declaration only affects those drivers&nbsp;providing direct assistance supporting emergency relief efforts.

“Under normal circumstances, we have really important safety rules and drivers can only be behind the wheel a total of 11 hours (per day),” Posler said. “But if you are driving a great distance and then sitting in line for hours waiting your turn, all of a sudden you’re bumping against those hours of service really quickly.”

Posler said Gov. Laura Kelly originally made an emergency declaration for the state that lasted 14 days in the hopes the fuel situation would be alleviated.&nbsp;

“It quickly became apparent that instead of that, shortages started getting farther and wider,” Posler said. He said distributors were going as far away as Amarillo and Denver to find fuel.&nbsp;

There was either no fuel available or if it was, it was strictly allocated, often to big contracts for stores like Casey’s and Love’s, he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Because it looked as though low supplies would continue, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration acted after Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa petitioned for a regional waiver.&nbsp;

“I am very impressed with how our members have navigated this environment over the last month or two, with as few fuel outages at gas stations that we have seen,” Posler said.

Distributors have delivered partial loads to different customers, adapting to billing everything separately instead of delivering a full load and billing as they normally do, he said.&nbsp;

Recovery, though, is likely to take months.&nbsp;

“They depleted the stores, which are maybe 500,000-gallon tanks, so those are not going to get replenished quickly and easily at a time of peak demand,” Posler said.&nbsp;

Robinson pulled up a website that looks at supplies at terminals across the country. As of Thursday, the Scott City terminal is “borderline” on diesel fuel, but the Wichita area and Great Bend terminals have all products, he said.&nbsp;

Enid, Oklahoma, though, has no diesel fuel, Robinson said.&nbsp;

Posler said numerous factors came together to create this year’s shortage.&nbsp;

Farmers typically stock up on fuel in the fall because prices are sometimes lower and they can reduce tax liabilities, Posler said.

“This year, because of where prices were and the incoming change of administration, the word on the street is that a lot fewer farmers stocked up and then needed to buy in the spring,” he said.&nbsp;

That shift, added to the usual annual surge in fuel use in the spring as more people are on the road, shifted demand patterns.&nbsp;

Kansas has three refineries and each one, at some point during the year, does what is called “turnaround,” Posler said. Normally, they operate year-round and 24 hours a day, but during turnaround, crews come into the refinery to perform annual maintenance.&nbsp;

CHS Refinery in McPherson was undergoing its turnaround at the same time these other factors were affecting fuel supplies, Posler said.&nbsp;

Repairs on a Kansas segment of the Magellan Pipeline, which runs through Kansas and 14 other states, also were taking longer than expected, he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“ONEOK owns the Magellan pipeline,” Posler said. “The Magellan is a very important pipe that runs in the east-west direction in Kansas. ONEOK was doing stress testing and they found some repairs and blowouts that needed to be done.”

ONEOK spokesperson Charlsey Phillips said&nbsp;the company had completed routine maintenance and resumed operations on a segment of the company’s Kansas pipeline.

Refineries also shifted their fuel blends from winter to summer blends, Posler said, which can slow processes. Summer blends have less butane in them, making them less volatile.&nbsp;

Robinson’s company and customers were affected by the shortage, seeing increased freight costs.&nbsp;

“It came at a cost,” he said, adding that he appreciated Posler’s work at Fuel True to reach out to the Kansas Corporation Commission and Kelly, who were all responsive.

“I would say, in general, we have a very strong infrastructure relative to other countries around the world,” Posler said. “Here in the Heartland, we’re fortunate that we have three refineries in our state, and we have more than one pipeline option that moves through the state. We are blessed compared to some states, under normal circumstances.”

Fuel shortages in western Kansas slowly abating as transport, maintenance issues fixed

A Reinvestment Housing Incentive District was approved for Big Creek Estates on Tuesday.

This is a procedural step and does not finalize the development's creation. Adam Pray of the Platinum Group and David Clingan of Grow Hays spoke at the Ellis County Commission meeting.

The tax incentive district covers 13 homes planned southeast of Hays, with construction costs estimated at $600,000. The resolution acknowledges a local housing shortage and begins the process by submitting a housing study to the Kansas Secretary of Commerce for review.

The incentive district uses new property tax revenue from the development to reimburse infrastructure expenses. About $300,000 will go toward a lift station to provide sewer access.

"The 13 homes could generate an estimated  $325,000 to $455,000 annually in local economic activity. Over a 20-year period, that equals about $6.5 million to $9 million just for 13 homes being added to our county," Clingan said.

Pray said housing demand far outweighs supply, with some buyers waiting for years. A 2022 housing needs assessment presented to the commission showed the county has fallen short of basic growth targets.

Rising development costs and affordability challenges have made it difficult to build new homes without financial incentives. Pray said there is a waiting list of 67 potential buyers.

"We've got one couple right now that came up from Houston. They've been looking for a year and a half," Pray said. "We just had a couple move here from Topeka. They've been looking for four years."

Pray said homes are typically sold before construction begins, and he expects the same for Big Creek Estates. He added the Hansen Foundation awarded a grant for the first four homebuyers, which can be used to lower interest rates, cover closing costs or other buyer expenses.

The resolution passed unanimously, but Commissioner Nathan Leiker said he is not yet fully committed to supporting the incentive district.

"I have no problem seeing this start advancing forward, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to support it after the public hearing. I will be doing more homework on it," Leiker said.

A certified copy will be submitted to the Kansas Secretary of Commerce. If the secretary approves, the county can schedule a public hearing and further consider the district.

Ellis County Commission approves incentive district for housing development

NORTON — The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a resurfacing project on a portion of Highway K-383 in Norton County the week of June 9.

Project work will include a mill and overlay on approximately 14 miles of K-383 starting at the Decatur County line and ending at the west Highway U.S. 36 junction. 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the areas where crews are actively working and directed by flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should plan for delays of 15 minutes or less during daylight hours.

Project work is expected to be completed in mid-July, conditions permitting.

Venture Corp., of Great Bend, is the project’s primary contractor with a total contract cost of approximately $2.3 million.

The state degree is the highest honor the Kansas FFA Association can bestow upon its members. 

In order to achieve this award, members must meet the following requirements: have received their Chapter FFA Degree, been an FFA member and agricultural education student for at least two years, earned at least $2,000, or worked 600 hours in their Supervised Agricultural Experience program, given a six-minute speech about agriculture or FFA, participated in eight different leadership activities, received a “C” average or better in high school and shown a record of outstanding leadership and community involvement.&nbsp;

The members who met these qualifications and their respective FFA chapters from the Northwest district are:

Hays, Northwest district FFA members receive State FFA Degree

In times of crisis, true character is revealed. And once again, Fort Hays State University students have shown that our Tiger Nation is defined by compassion, leadership, and service to others.

When an EF3 tornado tore through the town of Grinnell on May 18, the destruction left behind was almost beyond comprehension. Everyday life was upended in moments. Homes were gone. Machinery was broken and twisted. As images and stories of the devastation circulated, a group of our students, the brothers of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, decided they couldn’t simply watch from afar. They would go. They would help.

Sig Epp Cade Becker, a junior from Hays, heard about the damage through family and friends. Moved by what he learned, he rallied his fraternity brothers to gather tools and supplies—rakes, shovels, contractor bags—and head to Grinnell on May 31. What they encountered was, in the words of junior Anthony Arial of Hays, “like putting a Band-Aid on a bullet hole.”

In addition to Cade and Anthony, Sig Ep brothers Ryan Oglesby, Wichita, and Micah Von Stroh, Wichita, along with Sig Ep alum Julian Bixenman of Colby, Cade’s dad, Nathan Houser, and grandpa Lynn Houser, both of Plainville, pitched in to help.

They got to work in a nearby wheat field, just half a mile from town, near a farmhouse that had been reduced to rubble. A church nearby stood without its roof. The brothers cleared debris—metal, wood, fragments of lives interrupted—so the community could begin harvesting again in a few weeks. Their work didn’t erase the damage, but it moved Grinnell one step closer to recovery.

What struck me most about Cade and Anthony’s reflections wasn’t the magnitude of the task but the altruistic mindset they brought with them. They weren’t looking for recognition. They were guided by the core values of their fraternity—virtue, diligence, and brotherly love—and by the culture of care we strive to nurture in our Tiger Nation.

And once again, Fort Hays State University students have shown that our Tiger Nation is defined by compassion, leadership, and service to others.When an EF3 tornado tore through the town of Grinnell on May 18, the destruction left behind was almost beyond comprehension. Everyday life was upended in moments. Homes were gone. Machinery was broken and twisted. As images and stories of the devastation circulated, a group of our students, the brothers of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, decided they couldn’t simply watch from afar. They would go. They would help.Sig Epp Cade Becker, a junior from Hays, heard about the damage through family and friends. Moved by what he learned, he rallied his fraternity brothers to gather tools and supplies—rakes, shovels, contractor bags—and head to Grinnell on May 31. What they encountered was, in the words of junior Anthony Arial of Hays, “like putting a Band-Aid on a bullet hole.”In addition to Cade and Anthony, Sig Ep brothers Ryan Oglesby, Wichita, and Micah Von Stroh, Wichita, along with Sig Ep alum Julian Bixenman of Colby, Cade’s dad, Nathan Houser, and grandpa Lynn Houser, both of Plainville, pitched in to help.They got to work in a nearby wheat field, just half a mile from town, near a farmhouse that had been reduced to rubble. A church nearby stood without its roof. The brothers cleared debris—metal, wood, fragments of lives interrupted—so the community could begin harvesting again in a few weeks. Their work didn’t erase the damage, but it moved Grinnell one step closer to recovery.What struck me most about Cade and Anthony’s reflections wasn’t the magnitude of the task but the altruistic mindset they brought with them. They weren’t looking for recognition. NW Kan. woman avoids injury after crash during u-turn

NORTON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 10p.m. Wednesday in Norton County.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Kenworth semi driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Alan&nbsp;Hageman, 62,&nbsp;Lochbuie, Colorado, was southbound on Kansas 383 when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle entered the west ditch and overturned.

EMS transported Hageman to the Norton County Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Hays city commissioners will begin working on the proposed 2026 budget as they hear requests for funds from outside nonprofit organizations during their work session this afternoon.

• Fort Hays State University Hays Scholarship Program for Scholastic Achievement-$100,000 (same as 2025) • Grow Hays-$180,000 (same as 2025) • The Bricks-$54,000 (same as 2025) • CARE Council-$180,000 (same as 2025)

The results of the public opinion poll regarding fireworks use in Hays will be presented by James Bell, public relations officer.

Collin Bielser, assistant city manager, will present the design/build agreement and guaranteed maximum price for Phase 2 services of the new police department and municipal court to be built in Astra Bank, 1100 Fort.&nbsp;

Astra Bank is constructing a new facility at 27th and Main.

 PWC, Hays, has presented a  guaranteed maximum price&nbsp;of $5.9 million to renovate the existing Astra Bank, giving the police station more than twice the operational space it currently has.&nbsp;

Also on the agenda is a proposal to raise fees for the first time in 20 years at the city's two cemeteries, Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Mount Allen&nbsp;Cemetery.

The following increases are proposed&nbsp;

A proposed low bid for a new LED marquee sign for the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau, 2700 Vine, will be presented by Melissa Dixon, executive director.&nbsp;Commercial Sign, Hays, is the low bidder at $44,773.

Kim Rupp, director of finance, will discuss the city's 2025-2026 property/liability insurance policy renewal.&nbsp;

The renewal premium is a 30% increase from the year before, but the city's insurance broker, Insurance Planning Inc., Hays, concluded the current provider,&nbsp;MPR, offered the lowest cost option, according to Rupp.

In notes to city commissioners, Rupp said it is&nbsp;staff’s intention to actively pursue the remarketing&nbsp;process for the renewal in 2026-2027.&nbsp;

Hays City Commission to begin 2026 proposed budget review 

TOPEKA —As a result of a series of severe storms that struck the state in May, the state of Kansas has started joint Public Assistance Program Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDA) conducted by FEMA Region VII and Kansas Division of Emergency Management staff, according to a media release from the state.

Severe thunderstorms accompanied by straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding caused damage or loss in the following Kansas counties: Bourbon, Cheyenne, Edwards, Gove, Kiowa, Logan, Pratt, Reno, Scott, Sheridan, and Stafford.

The PDA teams will assess damages to public infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and utilities, to determine if those counties meet federal damage thresholds to qualify for federal disaster assistance.

The Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA) process is a crucial step in evaluating disaster-related damages within affected communities. The main goal of this process is to gather information that helps FEMA determine whether a disaster declaration should be recommended to the President. Ultimately, it is the President’s decision to determine whether to declare a major presidential disaster declaration.

The data collected during a PDA plays a significant role in determining whether a state may make a formal request for a Presidential disaster declaration. If a Presidential disaster declaration is granted, the declaration outlines which geographic areas qualify for federal disaster assistance and the specific types of aid made available. Additionally, the PDA process can contribute to shaping long-term recovery strategies, ensuring that affected communities receive the resources they need to rebuild and recover efficiently.

Kan. begins preliminary damage assessments for storms in May

The Board of Directors of United Way of Ellis County announced the upcoming departure of Executive Director Erica Berges, effective June 6, and the appointment of Bill Ring as interim executive director, effective June 9.

Berges has been a dedicated member of the United Way of Ellis County team for over 11 years, beginning her journey in 2014 as an administrative assistant. Her unwavering commitment to the organization’s mission and her exceptional leadership led to her appointment as executive director in 2019. Over the past six years, Erica has played a pivotal role in advancing the organization’s impact and strengthening community partnerships.

“On behalf of the entire board, we extend our deepest gratitude to Erica for her years of service and the lasting contributions she has made to United Way of Ellis County,” said Jaden Richardson, board president. “Her leadership has been instrumental in driving our mission forward, and we wish her continued success in her future endeavors.”

To ensure a smooth transition, the board has appointed Bill Ring as interim executive director. Ring brings a lifetime of community involvement and nonprofit leadership to the role. 

His passion for service is deeply rooted—his father served as chair of United Way of Miami-Dade County, Florida, in the 1970s—and Ring has continued that legacy through active engagement with several local nonprofits. He currently serves on the boards of multiple community organizations and is well-known for his dedication to the betterment of Ellis County.

Ring retired from Ellis County in 2021 having served as Public Works director. He just finished his fourth year as a substitute teacher for Hays USD 489.

In his interim role, Ring will oversee daily operations and support the organization during the search for a permanent executive director. His leadership will ensure that United Way of Ellis County continues its vital work without interruption.

The Board of Directors is now actively seeking qualified candidates for the executive director position. Individuals with a passion for community service and strong leadership experience are encouraged to apply. Interested applicants may submit a resume and cover letter to info@liveunited.us.

United Way of Ellis County announces leadership transition

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper was arrested in Hays on suspicion of DUI after a minor vehicle crash.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said officers arrested 37-year-old Davis Jay Whisman of Ellis after officers heard a collision at about 12:30 a.m. on May 31 in the 600 block of Park Street.

Scheibler said officers allegedly saw Whisman leave the scene in a white pickup truck with two passengers and located him within the area.

Whisman exited the vehicle and was arrested for alleged DUI and leaving the scene of an accident,&nbsp;Scheibler said. Officers observed the vehicle had damage consistent with a collision, but no injuries were reported, Scheibler said.

Kansas Highway Patrol Public Information Officer April M. McCollum confirmed Whisman's arrest and that he is a probationary employee undergoing field training.

McCollum said Whisman has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcomes of the DUI case and an internal investigation.

Whisman was booked into the Ellis County Jail but has since been released.&nbsp;Scheibler said all parties are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. 

McCollum said the&nbsp;Kansas Highway Patrol maintains high standards concerning the conduct and&nbsp;integrity of its employees and is dedicated to ensuring accountability and preserving public trust.

"I can't think of anything more important to Kansas than water." That was the concluding statement of Rep. Jim Minnix, R-Scott City, chairman of the Kansas House Water Committee, who spoke at Tuesday's water summit in Hays.

Minnix, a farmer and former Scott County commissioner, was one of several speakers who addressed water industry professionals and state officials from across Kansas gathered at the Hilton Garden Inn.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Minnix updated the audience on water-related legislation he's championed during his time in office and lamented the tightened 2025 state budget.&nbsp;

"The Kansas House has been working hard on water for the past five years," he said. "It doesn't happen fast." 

The state senate does not have a dedicated water committee.

During its 90-day session, the Kansas Legislature approved Substitute for House Bill&nbsp;<a href="https://kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/HB2172/" target="_blank">2172,</a>&nbsp;which establishes the Water Program Task Force to evaluate the state’s water program and its funding.&nbsp;The task force is also required to establish a water planning work group and submit a report to the legislature and Gov. Laura Kelly.

Minnix said all Kansans live or work "upstream and downstream from somebody. We're in this together."

There are an estimated 15 or so state agencies, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the federal Environmental Protection Agency that oversee water programs in Kansas. Minnix strongly supports Kelly's desire to create a single natural resources office and spend an additional $30 million each year to address the state's water crisis. 

Education, such as the research findings presented at the Know Water Summit, is an important component of helping Kansans understand the future of water quantity and quality in the Sunflower State.

Water conservation is a way of life in Hays, which was cited by numerous speakers for its leadership in the state.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b67d05b8-588a-43fe-9d91-32eb24d3a273">Outdoor watering restrictions</a> went into effect on June 1 and will continue through Sept. 30. Other restrictions are effective year-round.

There are 34 counties in Kansas with a population of more than 15,000 people. Thirty-three of those have adequate surface or groundwater supplies. Only Ellis County does not. The huge underground Ogallala Aquifer, which supports much of western Kansas, does not reach into Ellis County and is declining.&nbsp;

The average daily water use per Hays resident has continued to decrease, said Jeff Crispin, Hays water resources director.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We're at 78 gallons per person per day usage," he said.

The state average is 130 gallons per person, while the regional average is 172 gallons per person.

Hays also must consider water quality, given the city's urban area and the surrounding agricultural operations. Nitrates and phosphorus contaminants must be controlled, along with newer "forever chemicals" or PFAs (polyfluorooctane sulfonate) found in drinking water supplies and surface water across the United States.

"It's not only important for us to produce good water at the water treatment plant," Crispin said, "but also to clean it on the back end of things, such as the <a href="https://www.haysusa.com/362/Water-Reclamation-Reuse">water reclamation and reuse facility</a>.&nbsp;

"We need to make sure we're sending the best quality water we can downstream for the next user. We take that very seriously."

The Know Water Summit, a Kansas State University 105 Initiative, was organized and moderated by Stacie Minson, WaKeeney, a K-State watershed specialist with Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed WRAPS. 

She also discussed testing to determine what is in private well water and irrigation systems. Private water wells are unregulated in Kansas.&nbsp;

Other speakers included Holly Dickman, city of Hays water conservation specialist along with representatives from the Western Kansas Research Extension Centers, Kansas Department of Health and Environment Water Bureau, Kansas State University, and the Kansas Rural Water Association.&nbsp;

Rep. Minnix: 'Water is most important issue in Kansas'

TOPEKA—The Kansas judicial branch has launched a new virtual self-help center for people involved in court cases who are not represented by an attorney.

The website,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://go.kansascourts.gov/l/ZajWJdiI7D_H1v-2HxN8m4hd2mTF0-ToUkkWNOEQiPg">self-help.kscourts.gov</a>, shares information, forms, and tools to help Kansans with district court processes.

“Our goal was to create a reliable electronic resource for people who are navigating the court system on their own,” said Sarah Hoskinson, chief of access to justice at the Office of Judicial Administration. “It’s to help people who don’t understand or aren’t familiar with court processes. It also helps district courts that serve people who come to court without an attorney.”

The virtual self-help center homepage has an “I need help with” section that features in-demand resources according to input from the legal community, district court clerks, and data from searches on the kscourts.gov website. Links connect visitors with court forms, where to pay a fine or fee, how to find a court hearing, where to conduct legal research, and more. 

If someone needs information about a specific area of law, Hoskinson said the Topics section quickly connects them to key resources, including videos, forms, court timelines, and agencies. “Bringing these key resources together gives Kansans a central source of information about court processes,” she said. “With general web searches, you must sift through results from many sources that may be out of date, inaccurate, or both.”

The online self-help center also benefits district courts, especially those in smaller, rural counties.

“Some district courts maintain their own self-help information, but only if they have staff to manage it,” Hoskinson said. “The statewide virtual self-help center may fill an unmet need for some district courts, while creating efficiencies for others.”

Nyla Rogers, clerk of the Lyon County District Court, said the center will help her court provide essential information and guidance to the public. “The virtual self-help center video guides are great at helping the public learn the processes for their specific situations to help them file the appropriate court documents,” Rogers said.

Joni Wilson, court administrator in the 18th Judicial District (Sedgwick County), said the center supports both the public and court staff helping them.

“People can’t always take time off work to visit the courthouse to get help with their case,” Wilson said. “The center allows our court to help the public no matter the time of day or day of the week.”

Hoskinson said her team gathered information and resources from the Supreme Court Access to Justice Committee and the judges and court employees who serve as local access to justice liaisons in every judicial district. She said committee members and court liaisons used their experience with access to justice issues to organize the resources and identify areas that needed updates or new resources. 

Based on that work, the Information Services team in the Office of Judicial Administration designed and built the online self-help center. “We shared the first version of the virtual self-help center with others in the legal community, district court staff, and key Supreme Court committees to get their feedback,” Hoskinson said. “Their knowledge and experience in the different topical areas helped us refine and organize the content.” 

Chief Judge Kevin Berens of the 15th Judicial District (Cheyenne, Logan, Rawlins, Sheridan, Sherman, Thomas, and Wallace counties) chairs the Access to Justice Committee.&nbsp;

He noted that publishing the online self-help center has long been a committee goal. “The committee discussed the need for this resource for some time. The Office of Judicial Administration Information Services team helped us turn that vision into reality. It is a practical and important resource for self-represented parties and other court users,” Berens said. 

Berens also credits support from the Supreme Court Rural Justice Initiative Committee, Ad Hoc Committee on Best Practices for Eviction Proceedings, Advisory Council on Dispute Resolution, and Language Access Committee. “This was a collaborative effort among many members in our legal community, and, with their continued help, we hope to improve this resource in the coming years,” he said.

Each year, Fort Hays State University’s W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship (RCOBE) honors exceptional faculty members for their dedication to teaching, mentorship, and student success.

The annual Faculty of the Year recognition highlights outstanding educators from each of the college’s four academic departments. The selection process is led by the Robbins Ambassador students, who gather nominations from business students and conduct surveys and interviews with finalists to determine the honorees.
