John Harris, 84, went to be with Jesus on September 28, 2020, at his 
home in Great Bend surrounded by his whole family. He was the son of 
Merle and Emma Harris, born on January 31, 1936 in Pretty Prairie.&nbsp; He 
was one of six children.

John grew up enjoying the outdoors; fishing, hunting, farming and later, boating and more fishing.

John graduated from Mt. Hope High School in 1955. He started dating 
Carole Schoonover from Haven High School, starting his junior year in 
high school.&nbsp; While John was in high school, he met his Lord and was 
baptized at Mount Hope Methodist Church. Later, on August 15, 1957, he 
married that high school sweetheart and they went to Hutchinson 
Community College, where John played football and was co-captain of the 
football team in 1957. From there they went onto Emporia State 
University, where he received his BSE in 1959.

John’s first job was teaching in Carbondale, where he coached all 
three sports, taught history, shop and drivers education. In those days,
 “the coach” marked the football field and drove the players’ bus.

Their summers were spent at Arkansas State University where they 
received their MSE degree the following two summers. It helped that ASU 
was so close to calm and beautiful, Lake Norfork.

After two years in Carbondale, they moved to Partridge where John 
coached and taught from 1962-1964 (football &amp; track). While in 
Partridge, John and Carole started their family. Pam was born in 1964. 
Then, as they moved to Goddard the rest of the family came along; Kim, 
1967, Jenni, 1969 and Tammi in 1973. They made their home in Goddard for
 the next 12 years while John was coaching football and track and 
teaching Drivers Education and History.

While in Goddard, he continued at Wichita State University to finish 
his Specialist in Education Administration. The next move was to 
Athletic Director in Goddard.

Then in 1976, they moved to Great Bend, where John was the new 
Assistant Superintendent in charge of finance, and buildings and 
grounds. What a wonderful career followed at school, with further 
education, and teaching finance classes at FHSU and for KSU. The many 
years until his retirement went quickly and in 2004 he retired from USD 
428.

When the first child was born, they decided to make family vacation a
 priority. Each year, they would ask the girls where they wanted to go 
and it was always Table Rock Lake and Branson. They had many good times 
and good years together, as this family vacation continues as a 
tradition. John had many plans for fishing trips after retirement. He 
and Carole went to Alaska twice and British Columbia and Hawaii before 
his health became an issue.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Carole, of the home, 
four daughters, Pam Allender (Kendall) of Hutchinson, Kim Randall (Mark)
 of Great Bend, Jenni Wittig (Steve) of Great Bend and Tammi 
Krebaum&nbsp;(Kevin) of Salina; one brother, Joe Harris (Harriet); one 
sister, Amelia Lyon; two brother-in-laws, Jack Cole and Don Newton; 12 
grandchildren, Erika Ewing (Harley) and their children Harley and 
Theodore, Erin Bernard (Jon), Zane Allender, Jackson Randall, Jensen 
Randall, Jaiden Randall (earning her angel wings in 2001), Johnathan 
Randall, Dustin Swanson (Melissa) and their children Rydlie, Lennex and 
Coda, Chantell Wittig (Jordan McKenzie), Kade Krebaum, Megan Krebaum and
 Julianna Krebaum.

He was preceded in passing by three sisters, Audrey Stamback, Julia 
Cole, and Ellenna Newton; and by two brother-in-laws, James Stamback and
 Gary Lyon.

His family, these wonderful kids, grandkids and great grandkids were 
the love of his life. He didn’t ever want to miss being in on whatever 
sport or activity they were doing. The last two years, his health 
dictated that he couldn’t go, but he still kept up on what was 
happening.

John was a generous, patient, loving, kind and caring husband, dad, 
grandpa, great grandpa and friend to so many wonderful people. John 
loved to tell stories that entertained his family and friends. Whether 
the stories be about the civil war, the wild, wild west or the latest 
fishing stories or football games, he entertained us all with his 
knowledge and wit. He was an avid reader of history and Civil War 
stories. John had many wonderful Doctors who helped along the way; Dr. 
Amanda Valiant, Dr. David Gile, Dr. Richard Preston, Dr. Greg Nanney, 
Dr. Jon Pike, and Dr. Ryan Beard to name the most recent.

John was involved in the Heartland Community Church of Great Bend, 
past president of Great Bend Noon Lions Club, past president of KASBO 
(Kansas Association School Business Officials), and past president of 
USA (United School Administrators). He was inducted into Kansas Teachers
 Hall of Fame in Dodge City in 2003.

Visitaiton will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, 
October 1, 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends 
from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. John’s Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 
a.m., Friday, October 2, 2020, at Heartland Community Church with 
Pastors Troy Miller and Greg Savage presiding. Interment will be in the 
Great Bend Cemetery North. 

Memorials are suggested to the Heartland 
Community Church or Barton County Food Bank, in care of Bryant Funeral 
Home.

John Harris

Robyn Clifford passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at the Redbud 
Village nursing home in Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 76. She was 
born on October 4, 1943 to Robert and Vivian (Freeman) Keiser in 
Glendale, California.


Robyn spent her early years moving around the world due to her 
father’s affiliation with the United States Military. She battled many 
illnesses at a young age but never let that affect her work or the care 
she gave to others. Robyn found a home in Henderson, Nevada where she 
spent a few years working in a nursing home and met and fell in love 
with a co-worker, Donald Clifford. The couple were united in marriage on
 February 14, 1992 in Henderson at the nursing home they worked so the 
residents could attend. They later relocated to the Rooks County area 
where she and Donald spent the rest of their lives.


Robyn was a woman of faith with a huge heart that overflowed with 
love for family, friends, the elderly she cared for, and even the stray 
cats she took into her care. A beacon of light, her charismatic and 
bubbly personality radiated from her heart to everyone she met. She 
never knew a stranger and jumped at the opportunities to help anyone. 
She donated vehicle loads of clothing to the Pine Ridge Reservation; and
 it was by this daily example of living that she taught all of us what 
it truly means to love and care for one another, and live every day 
being grateful for the opportunity to humbly serve one another. 


Robyn is survived by her daughter, Leeann of Florida; stepdaughter, 
Naomi Clifford of Oklahoma; step-sons, Jamie Thompson of Nevada and Andy
 Clifford of Arizona; close friend, Kayla Desbien of Kansas; one 
grandchild; and  several step-grandchildren and 
step-great-grandchildren.


She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Vivian Keiser; husband, Donald Clifford; and sister Roberta Keiser.


Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer’s Association and may be sent

Linda Lulubell Fry passed away on September 25, 2020 at the Solomon 
Valley Manor in Stockton, KS, at the age of 73. She was born on July 10,
 1947 in rural Natoma, KS to Erle and Leona Martha (Chrisler) Beck. She 
was married to Harvey Fry on November 26, 1968 in Washington. 


Linda grew up in Natoma and graduated from Natoma High School in 
1965. After high school she moved to Portland, Oregon to work as a 
nannie while Harvey was in Vietnam. After Harvey’s 28 years of service 
in the Airforce, they moved back to Woodston. 


Linda loved to travel, and she loved cats, horses, and rodeos. 
Although she has now gone home to be with her Lord, the legacy of her 
caring and compassion will live on in our hearts and memories. 


Linda is survived by her sisters, Carol Kimball of Urich, MO and 
Lela Glatz and husband Gary of Brighton, WI; brother, Allen Beck and 
wife Mary of Hutchinson, KS; sister-in-law Dena Beck of Stockton, KS; 
and many nieces and nephews.


She is preceded in death by her parents, Erle and Leona; husband Harvey Fry; and brother Alvy Beck.


A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2020, at 2:00
 PM with visitation 11:00 AM until service time at the funeral home in 
Stockton. Private inurnment will be at the Ash Rock Cemetery, north 
Woodston.

Linda L. Fry

Cyril J. Schmeidler, age 100, died at Via Christi, Hays, KS, on Saturday, September 26, 2020. Cyril John Schmeidler was born at Catharine, KS, on October 7, 1919, the eldest son of John Schmeidler and Emma (Wolf) Schmeidler. He served his country for 3 ½ years during World War II and was a lifelong farmer in the Catharine area.

Cyril graduated from Hays High School in 1937 and St. Joseph’s College and Military Academy in 1939. He moved to Washington, DC shortly thereafter and married his childhood sweetheart, Mildred Karlin, on June 7, 1943 in Jacksonville, FL prior to departing for Europe for the war. He was a clerk typist in the Seventh Corps, U.S. Army, and was discharged in late 1945, having attained the rank of corporal.

After the war, he returned to Ellis County to take up farming. He and Mildred rejoiced in the births of their four sons, weathered the droughts of 1950s, and rebuilt their new home and the farmstead after they were destroyed by a tornado in 1959. He was active on the farm north of Catharine well into his mid-nineties, and said that he was happiest when he was on the tractor. Cyril also was active in St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and in the Ellis County community throughout his life. He briefly taught at Severin School in the late 1940s. He served several terms on the St. Catherine’s Parish Council. He was a Catharine Township trustee for many years, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)-Hays and a member of the Hays American Legion. He was a charter member of the Farmers Credit Union, Hays, served on the board &amp; was board president. He served as president of the Ellis County Extension Council. He received conservation awards from the Ellis County Soil Conservation District. In the mid-1970s, he was a co-owner and the general manager of the Victoria Grain Company. He sold insurance and was an accomplished carpenter.

Although it may be said that Cyril’s favorite pastime was working (except Sundays), he also loved to play cards, especially pinochle and solo. He always seemed to know what cards others had in their hands or what card they were about to play. He loved to dance, and learned to square dance with his second wife.

Cyril Schmeidler was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred, who died in 1972; his second wife, Alice Unrein, whom he married on August 23, 1975 and who died in April 2019; his siblings and their spouses: Solana Moore (Paul); Fidelia Herbert (Charles), Sr. Solana Schmeidler, Celestine Schmeidler (Marcella), Harold Schmeidler (Norma), and Gilbert Schmeidler (Mary Ann), and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by four sons: Neal (Lorrinda), Springfield, VA; Phil (Brenda), Hays, KS; Michael (Cheryl) Hays, KS; Lloyd (Brenda), Durham, NC; twelve grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Cyril John Schmeidler will be held on Wednesday, September 30th at 11 AM at St. Catherine’s Church in Catharine. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 AM at the church, with a Parish Rosary at 10:30.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors courtesy of the Hays VFW Honor Guard.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all visitors are expected to wear facial coverings throughout the services.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Catherine’s Church, Thomas More Prep-Marian, Via Christi Chapel, or the Dominican Sisters of Peace. The family is grateful for the loving care provided by the team at Via Christi to Cyril and Alice Schmeidler during their stay there.

United Way of Ellis County will be holding their 3rd Annual Golf Tournament on Sunday, October 4 with registration starting at 9 a.m. and a tee off time of 10 a.m.

The proceeds of the event will go towards their 2020 Campaign.

United Way still accepting teams for annual golf tournament

Outdoor watering restrictions for the city of Hays end Thursday.

The restriction prohibiting outdoor water use between noon and 7 p.m. - including private wells - began June 1 and continues through Sept. 30.

Of course, the weather can still get hot in October, says Holly Dickman, Hays water conservation specialist.

"If it's warm and windy, you should water your landscape plants, including turfgrass if necessary, early in the morning or at night to make most efficient use of the water," she said.&nbsp;

Other water restrictions are prohibited year round:

* Washing down of hardscapes such as sidewalks, parking lots and driveways * Known loss of water through breaks or leaks in plumbing systems * Escape of water from private property onto pubic property such as sidewalks or into the street guttering from landscape irrigation

Dickman added that fall is an "excellent time to plant deciduous trees and shrubs, as well as many drought tolerant perennials.

"The cooler air temperatures make the environment less stressful, while the warm soil temperatures encourage good root growth."

James Michael “Jim” Balthazor, 69, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, September 27, 2020, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Jim was born on September 06, 1951, in Concordia, Kansas, the son of Armand and Helen (Appleby) Balthazor.  He grew up in Concordia, Kansas, and graduated from Notre Dame High School in the class of 1969.  After high school, he received his teaching degree from Ft. Hays State University in 1977, majoring in vocal music, science and elementary education.  He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Lucinda Mae “Cindy” Spatz on August 18, 1974, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Beloit, Kansas.  From this union Jim and Cindy were blessed with two children, Kirk and Teryn. 

 Jim started his teaching career in La Crosse, Kansas, in 1977.  In 1978, he moved to Russell, Kansas and took a vocal music teaching position at USD #407.  Later in his teaching career, he taught Science and developed the Peggy Taylor Owls Project and Science Olympiad. He retired from USD #407 in 2012 and continued his career teaching science, Science Olympiad, and monarch music at Thomas Moore Prep in Hays, Kansas. He spent many years directing and helping with musicals at RHS and TMP.  He was a longtime member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell where he cantored and played with the ministry group Revelations. 

 He enjoyed music, rock hunting, metal detecting and spending time at the lake boating with friends and family.  Most of all he enjoyed life, spending time with his family, and he especially enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. 

Surviving family includes his wife of 46 years Cindy of the home; daughter Teryn Yarmer (Neil) of Russell, Kansas; 3 brothers Fred Balthazor (Theresa Kueter), Greg Balthazor (Lisa) and Pat Balthazor (Jamie); 2 sisters Cindy Cleveland (Mike) and Christine Sevigny; 4 grandchildren Chase Alan Yarmer, Aiden Matthew Yarmer, Brynley Grace Yarmer and Koda James Yarmer; sister in-law Sheila K. Hein and nephew Shawn Hein (Jenny); and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Kirk Matthew Balthazor on August 05, 2000, brother in-law Don Hein and nephews Doug Hein and Benjamin Cleveland. A funeral mass to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, October 02, 2020, at the St. Mary Queen of Angel Catholic Church in Russell.  Viewing will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Thursday, October 01, 2020, at the mortuary in Russell.  A vigil and rosary will be held at the church at 7 P.M. on Thursday evening, October 01, 2020.

Marlyn D. “Dean” Brown, 88, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Dean was born April 23, 1932 in Hays, Kansas.  He grew up in Hays and later in Waldo, Kansas.  He graduated from Waldo High School.

Dean served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.  He was a Company Radioman.  After his tour he transferred to the Army Reserves and returned to Russell.

Dean was united in marriage to Barbara Wagner on November 18, 1956 in Russell.  This union was blessed with two children; Greg and Marietta.  They made their home in Russell.

Dean worked for the City of Russell many years and retired as the Superintendant of the City Power Plant.  He retired in 2002.  Earlier in life he worked in the oil fields and for Shannon Appliances.  He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and was a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240.  He enjoyed fishing, watching sporting events, tinkering and fixing things for family and friends.  He always had a smile and never knew a stranger.

Dean’s surviving family include his wife of 63 years, Barbara of the home; son, Greg Brown (Michelle) of Fairview, Oklahoma; daughter, Marietta Watkins (Tony) of Cleo Springs, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Stephanie Schatz (Mike) and Trevor Watkins; and great grandchild, Max Dean Schatz.

Celebration of Dean’s Life will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, October 2, 2020 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.  The family has chosen cremation and no visitation will be held. Vernon J. Kisner, 91, Hays, died Sunday, September 27, 2020 at HaysMed.

He was born May 4, 1929 in Pfeifer the 
son of Adam and Cecilia (Jacobs) Kisner.&nbsp;&nbsp; In 1947, he graduated from 
Schoenchen High School then attended Kansas State University for a 
year.&nbsp; He earned both a Bachelor and Masters Degree in mathematics from 
Fort Hays State University and taught math in Schoenchen, at Jefferson 
West, and at Hays High School.&nbsp; On April 18, 1950 he was united in 
marriage to Virginia Dome in Pfeifer and they celebrated 70 years of 
marriage.&nbsp; He was a farmer, automotive repairman in LaCrosse, and a 
police officer for the City of Hays.&nbsp; His memberships included St. 
Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joseph Third Degree Knights of Columbus 
Council #1325.&nbsp; Vernon loved the world of mathematics, but especially 
loved teaching and helping his students learn.&nbsp; He enjoyed playing 
volleyball, raising eight wonderful children with his wife, watching his
 children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, and following K-State 
athletics.&nbsp; He loved life and farming, and always looked forward to 
harvest and driving the combine.

Survivors include his wife Virginia of 
Hays, four sons; Mark Kisner and wife Judy of Sugarland, TX, Terrence 
Kisner and wife Anne Marie of Bellevue, WA, Dale Kisner and wife Karen 
of Victoria, and Craig Kisner and wife Robyn of Hays, four daughters; 
Donna Bailey and husband Berny of Hays, Kimberly Moore and husband Phil 
of Hays, Sandra Skipton and husband Steve of Derby, and Anne Zimmerman

Vernon J. Kisner

Norma “JoAnne” Elder, 90, Bison, Kansas, died Monday, September 28, 2020, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

JoAnne was born March 9, 1930, in La Crosse, Kansas, the daughter of 
Clyde Christopher and Elva Mae (Smith) Hall.&nbsp; She was a lifelong 
resident of Bison, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1947 graduate of Bison Rural High School, 
Bison, Kansas, she was a homemaker, and cosmetologist working for 20 
years from her shop in her home.&nbsp; JoAnne helped her husband, Leonard, 
with the farm work.&nbsp; Although she disliked it, she was very good at it.&nbsp;
 But JoAnne was a seamstress from the get go.&nbsp; She owned and operated 
Elder’s Drapery in Bison, Kansas, for 12 years prior to her retirement 
in 1995.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist 
Women, and Joy Club, all of Bison, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a lifetime member of
 the Order of the Eastern Star, Hays Chapter #228, Hays, ,Kansas, and a 
charter member of the Sunshine Unit Extension Club.

JoAnne enjoyed gardening, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On January 16, 1949, she married Leonard D. Elder at the United 
Methodist Church, Bison, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death October 13, 
2007.

Survivors include:&nbsp; two daughters, Kathy M. Holopirek, and her 
husband, Rick, Bison, Kansas, and Lori A. Collins, and her husband 
Charles, Omaha, Nebraska; nine grandchildren, and 15 great 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, 
Dennis Elder; an infant daughter, Karen Marie Elder; and two sisters, 
Bonnie Schraeder, and LoRee Cooley.

Memorial service will be Saturday, October 3, 2020, at 10:30 A.M. at 
the United Methodist Church, Bison, Kansas, with Pastor Angie Vertz 
officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will be in Lone Star Cemetery, Bison, Kansas.

Social distancing is recommended.&nbsp;The church is requiring all service attendees to wear masks.

Kansas crude prices are once again above $30, but remain more than $16 a barrel below the prices posted last year at this time. CHS in McPherson on Friday raised prices by a quarter to $30.50 per barrel.&nbsp;

AAA reports just 10 states had average gasoline prices below two dollars a gallon last week, and Kansas was one of them. The statewide average for a gallon of regular was just over $1.97 Thursday. We spotted $1.99 across Great Bend and $1.89 at several stations in Hays. The national average was a fraction over $2.19 a gallon, which is up a cent and a half from a week ago, down a penny from a month ago, and down 47 cents from a year ago.

Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports five active drilling rigs in eastern Kansas, which is up one, and five in the western half of the state, which is down one. Operators are about to spud one new well in Russell County. Baker Hughes reported 261 active drilling rigs across the U.S. on Friday, four oil rigs and two rigs drilling for natural gas. The rig count in Texas was up seven, while New Mexico was down two rigs.

Regulators in Kansas approved 11 new drilling permits last week, six in eastern Kansas and five west of Wichita, including one location in Barton County. That's 315 permits statewide so far this year, compared to 741 by this point last year.

Operators completed eleven new wells last week across Kansas. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports five of those were east of Wichita and six were in Western Kansas, including one in Ellis County. The year-to-date total is 655 completions. At this time last year, the state saw over one thousand newly completed wells.

The government reported a big drawdown in U.S. crude oil supplies. The Energy Information Administration reported total inventories of just under 495 million barrels for the week ending September 18. That marks a decline of more than one and a half million barrels. EIA says inventories remain about 13% above the five-year average for this time of year.

U.S. crude-oil production was just over 10.7 million barrels per day, down 154,000 barrels per day from the week before, and down more than two million barrels per day from a year ago.

U.S. crude oil exports reached a record high in February and have since fallen each month, based on data through June. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says U.S. crude oil exports in the first half of the year are still higher than they were in the first half of last year.

Monthly crude oil imports declined sharply in April before increasing in May and June. EIA says imports were still lower than the same period last year. During that time, global demand fell by more than ten percent. Last week refineries increased imports by 160,000 barrels per day, but the four-week average is 24% below the same period a year ago.

The governor of California on Wednesday announced a timeline under which the state would ban the sale of new passenger vehicles powered by gasoline. The plan won’t stop people from owning or selling used gas-powered cars. But in 2035 it would end the sale of all new gas guzzlers in the state that accounts for more than one out of every 10 new cars sold in the U.S.

The state oil company in Libya reopened three ports for oil exports last week, as a political truce took hold. Reuters reports Shell provisionally chartered an oil tanker to load crude from one of the open ports at the end of this week. The ports have been shut down since January as part of a wider blockade. Bloomberg reports Libyan output has tripled in the week since the deal was reached.

Two huge Oklahoma-based Permian Basin producers have announced their merger. WPX Energy of Tulsa will merge with Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy in an all-stock transaction. The combined company will keep the name Devon Energy with its headquarters in Oklahoma City.

Just a week after revealing its plan to turn itself into a clean-energy giant, BP watched its share price drop to a 25-year low. Bloomberg reports top brass spent last week making presentations to show the world they could adapt to a low-carbon future without sacrificing returns. Investors were skeptical, and on Thursday BP stock closed at its lowest level since October 1995.

The Russian budget took a $164 billion hit last year because of a two-percent drop in crude prices. The Ministry of Natural Resources announced the value of Russia's crude reserves dropped by 17% in 2019. Russia's oil reserves make up more than 70% of that country's Gross Domestic Product. Analysts expect a much larger hit this year because of the pandemic price crash.

Based solely on the number of wells drilled, 2020 is shaping up to be the worst year since the 1930s, and perhaps earlier. World Oil offers a new drilling forecast suggesting we could drill fewer than 11,000 wells this year. That's half of last year's total and one fourth the total six years ago. The last time the total was below 12,000 wells was 1933.

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Bronze statues of legendary Kansas Football players John Hadl and Gale Sayers will be unveiled outside the Anderson Family Football Complex at halftime of the Jayhawks game on Oct. 3 vs. Oklahoma State. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this event will not be open to the public to attend in-person, but fans will be able to watch the ceremony online through KUAthletics.com. For those fans in attendance for the game, the ceremony will be live streamed on the videoboard in-stadium.

Two of the greatest players to ever suit up for the Jayhawks, Hadl and Sayers become the first two Kansas Football representatives to have statues of their likeness on the University of Kansas campus. Each statue stands eight-feet tall if standing upright and weighs close to 1,000 pounds.

Hadl, who played at Kansas from 1959-61, etched his name into Jayhawk lore with three brilliant seasons. The first two-time All-American in program history, Hadl starred for the Jayhawks both as a quarterback and halfback. A three-time all-conference selection, Hadl finished his career with 1,281 passing yards and 1,016 rushing yards, on top of leading the nation in punting in 1959. He also shined as a defensive back and return specialist.

Hadl’s No. 21 jersey is one of three retired Kansas Football numbers, joining Sayers and Ray Evans. Hadl still holds the school record for longest interception return (98 yards vs. TCU in 1959) and longest punt (94 yards vs. Oklahoma in 1959).

The Jayhawks went 14-5-2 during Hadl’s junior and senior seasons and ranked nationally in the top 20 each season. Hadl’s dazzling career concluded by being named MVP of the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl and leading his team to a 33-7 win over Rice.

The Lawrence native is a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994. After Kansas, Hadl also flourished in the NFL, enjoying a 16-year career and throwing for more than 33,000 yards. He was named NFL Man of the Year in 1971.

The statue of Hadl’s will stand next to the one of Sayers, who starred at Kansas one season after Hadl graduated.

Nicknamed the “Kansas Comet”, Sayers is widely known as one of the best running backs in the history of the game. A two-time All-America selection like Hadl, Sayers led Kansas in rushing, touchdowns and kickoff returns in all three of his seasons. He became the first player in NCAA Division I history to record a 99-yard run when he did it against Nebraska in 1963. Sayers also had a 96-yard dash a season prior against Oklahoma State, giving him the two longest runs in school history until 1997.

Sayers finished his Jayhawk career with 2,675 rushing yards and 3,917 all-purpose yards. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977. Following his Kansas career, Sayers was a first-round pick of the NFL’s Chicago Bears and the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.

While Sayers had an abbreviated seven-year NFL career that was cut short due to knee injuries, that didn’t stop him from making a major impact when healthy. He led the league in rushing in 1966 and 1969 and in 1977 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at age 34. Sayers, who passed away at age 77 on Wednesday, remains the youngest person ever selected to the NFL Hall of Fame.

The running back’s impact went far beyond the field, both during his time at Kansas and with the Bears. While with the Bears, Sayers was roommates with Brian Piccolo. The two became the first interracial roommates in the NFL and remained close friends until Piccolo passed away in 1970 of cancer.

Sayers, who also served as an assistant athletics director at Kansas from 1972-76, was also inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Minority Athletics Administration Hall of Fame in 2009.

Elnora Leone (Lynn) Jinks passed away on September 23, 2020 at 
Midlothian, TX.&nbsp; 

She was born on April 30, 1925 at Scott City, KS to 
Edward J. and Maggie (Miller) Schultz.&nbsp; The family moved to Pawnee 
County, Kansas when she was very young, and later moved into Larned.&nbsp; 
Her nickname in High School was “Dutch” and she was a member of the 
Dramatics Class, taking part in several plays.&nbsp; Elnora graduated from 
Larned High School in 1942 and then attended Business School in 
Hutchinson, KS &nbsp;

She married Jerry Jinks on June 7, 1958, and they lived in Larned the
 rest of their lives.&nbsp; They both worked many years at Larned State 
Hospital. Elnora was the Secretary for the Social Services Department.&nbsp; 
She took great pride in the fact that she could make the department run 
smoothly and make her boss look good.&nbsp; She retired at age 70 after 39 
years of service.&nbsp; Elnora was also well known for her Avon business

She enjoyed traveling with Jerry in their RV, and going to Lake 
Wilson for weekends. She loved fishing, camping, and being in their 
boat.&nbsp; Elnora also loved spending time at Port Lavaca, TX on the beach.&nbsp;
 She and Jerry would also spend a week in the RV at the Hutchinson Sate 
Fair every year.&nbsp; She loved decorating her home.

Elnora was preceded in death by her parents Edward J. &amp; Maggie 
Schultz, 2 brothers - Vernon and Estes, 3 sisters Ethel, Doris, and 
Gladys, and husband Jerry Jinks.&nbsp; She is survived by her children: Benny
 Chesebro of Waxahachie, TX, and Barry Chesebro of Topeka, KS; her 
beloved grandchildren Brian Brown of Richardson, TX, Suzanne Bruyere of 
Frisco, TX, Christy Chesebro, career Air Force, currently stationed at 
Clovis, NM, Dan W. Gill of Ruidoso, NM, Thomas Metzler, Agaunga, CA, and

Elnora L. Jinks

Helen Louise Hoyt, age 91, died on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at the Homestead Assisted Living in Garden City, Kansas.  She was born on April 28, 1929 in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of Ralph Johnson and Dorothy (Morrow) Coen.

She worked as the administrator for the Finney County Health Nurse for over 30 years before retiring.  Louise was also a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Louise was an incredible cook, baker and loved her country music.  Louise was a super grandmother and certainly knew how to throw parties for family and friends.  Her big smile and infectious laughter will always be remembered for brightening up any room.  

On March 7, 1948, she married Donald “Ed” Edward Hoyt in Garden City, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on March 6, 2000.

One Son: Jim (Patty) Hoyt of San Ramon, California Companion: Milton Thomas of Garden City, Kansas

Three Grandchildren: Bobbie Lynn (Todd) Murphy of Hays, Kansas Carly Lynn Hoyt of Campbell, California Mitchell Edward (Erin) Hoyt of Olathe, Kansas

 Ann Staab, 92, of 222 State St., Carthage, N.Y., died peacefully on Friday, 
September 25, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Sue
 was born on August 28, 1928 in Deferiet, N.Y., the daughter of the late 
Joseph and Anna (Tunia) Siedlecki. She attended school in Deferiet. She 
married Nicholas J. Staab on February 23, 1946 at St. Joseph’s Church in
 Hays, Kansas. Nicholas, a former employee of the St. Regis Paper 
Company died on October 14, 1975.&nbsp;

Sue
 enjoyed working many years for Willie and David Lewis at the Whistle 
Stop in Deferiet. She later worked as a teller for the St. Lawrence 
National Bank in Carthage for many years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She retired from Community 
Bank in 1992.&nbsp;

Sue
 loved her family with all her heart. She was a truly devoted wife, 
mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was her absolute 
pride and joy. Her favorite pastime was to attend all the various 
sporting events of her son and then her grandchildren and her great 
grandchildren. She was known as the “number one fan”.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sue had been very
 involved in athletics herself through the years. In particular, she 
enjoyed softball and bowling. During the time she bowled at the Deferiet
 Bowling Alleys, Sue made bowling league history there and for the 
Carthage area by bowling a 609. She was told then she was believed to be
 the first person ever to do so but most definitely the first woman. She
 has always been proud of that accomplishment.&nbsp;

Sue
 had a very generous heart and giving spirit. She was always giving of 
herself to family, friends, and the community. Sue volunteered her time 
whenever and wherever needed. Sue was a very active member of the 
American Legion Auxiliary Post #789 in Carthage. She was a longtime 
parishioner of St.Rita’s in Deferiet and then St. James Catholic Church 
of Carthage. Sue volunteered many years working for the St.James Fair.

She is survived by one son and his wife: Richard J. (Peggy) Staab of West Carthage, 7 grandchildren
 and their spouses, Tamara Anderson, Brian (Angel) Staab, Adam 
(Abby)Staab and Joseph Staab and companion Tasha, all of West Carthage, 
Andrew (Tara) Staab of Carthage, Anna (Steve) Steele of Scottsville, NY 
and Theresa (Eddie) Escudero of Pennellville, NY, 16 great 
grandchildren, a sister, Helen Piroli of Deferiet and numerous nieces 
and nephews.&nbsp;

Sue
 is predeceased by her grandson, Kevin M. Staab who died on October 24, 
1974 and 6 brothers, John, Julius, Alexander, Stanley, Eddie and Tommy 
Siedlecki and 3 sisters, Agnes Gaffney, Pauline Vars and Dorothy 
Siedlecki (infant).

A
 Mass of Christian burial will be held 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 
30 at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Donald A. Robinson, Pastor 
officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday from 10-11am at the church. 
Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Carthage. There will be a private 
family visitation at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home on Tuesday 
evening.

Janet A. Williams, 87, Hays, died Monday, September 21, 2020 at her daughter’s home in Augusta.

She was born July 29, 1933 in Natoma, 
Kansas the daughter of Albert and Edna (Hartman) Grasch.&nbsp; She was a 
graduate of Natoma High School.&nbsp; On June 3, 1951 she was united in 
marriage to Everett R. Williams in Alton, Kansas, and they celebrated 55
 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on November 15, 
2006.&nbsp; Janet and Everett lived, worked, and raised their family on 
Higher View Dairy.&nbsp; She was a former member of Messiah Lutheran Church, 
housekeeper at the Ramada Inn, and a Senior Companion.&nbsp; Janet loved 
dancing, angels, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include a son; Rick Williams 
of Wichita, two daughters; Dee Rupp and husband Eddie of Hays and Pam 
Foster of Augusta, a brother-in-law; Bill Williams and wife Carolyn of 
Medicine Lodge, eight grandchildren; Angie Rupp, Missy Trent and husband
 Robert, Jaycee Bourget and husband Rocky, Nichole Foster, Kelly 
Williams and wife Merresa, Shelly Williams, Trey Crouch and wife Maria 
and Megan Crouch, her longtime friend; Carol Ostrom, 18 great 
grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and numerous nieces and 
nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Everett, and an infant son; Sean Williams.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 
11:00 on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral 
Home.&nbsp; A prayer service will be at 10:30 with Rev. Rocco Mallardi

Capuchin Father Bennett Colucci O.F.M. 
Cap., 89, victim of Covid-19 of Via Christi Village Care Center in Hays,
 Kansas, died Thursday,&nbsp; Sept. 24, 2020, just 28 days short of his 90th 
birthday, having tested positive for&nbsp; Covid-19 virus a few days earlier.

The youngest of the eight children of 
late Pasquale and Pasqualina (Citarelli) Colucci, Pasquale Jr., was born
 on October 22, 1930, in Hillsville, Pennsylvania.&nbsp;Early in childhood 
his parents died, and he was raised by his uncle and aunt, Frank and 
Nellie Colucci.&nbsp; He received the new name Bennett, when he joined the 
Capuchin Franciscan Order in 1951.&nbsp; Bennett studied for the priesthood 
at St. Fidelis Seminary and College in Herman, Pennsylvania, and 
Capuchin College in Washington, D.C., and was ordained a priest in 1957.

His first assignment was to the 
Capuchin Missions in Puerto Rico, where he ministered as associate 
pastor in Ponce, Utuado, Trujillo Alto, and Adjuntas, and then as 
director of a school for lay brothers and a retreat house in Adjuntas.&nbsp; 
In 1970, he moved to Colorado and served for four years as an associate 
pastor in Annunciation church in Denver.&nbsp; He then was on the staff of 
Denver’s Marycrest High School for 14 years while engaging in pastoral 
ministry at Clare Gardens.&nbsp; From 1986 till 1993 he was associate 
director and chaplain of Samaritan House for the homeless.&nbsp; Father 
served next in Kansas on the pastoral care team at Hays Medical Center, 
becoming its director in 2001.&nbsp; Retiring&nbsp;from public ministry in 2005, 
he took up residence at St. Fidelis Friary in Victoria, until his move 
to Via Christi Village in 2017.&nbsp; Father was the last member of his 
immediate family to die.

Reception of the Body and Morning 
Prayer will be celebrated at 8:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 29, 2020, 
followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, at The 
Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial will be in the 
Friar’s Plot at St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A state university president in Kansas whose decision this year to cancel a virtual speech by Ivanka Trump angered donors has resigned after less than a year in the job. The board overseeing the Kansas higher education system did not say why Wichita State University President Jay Golden stepped down in announcing the move Friday. 

The university in June received national attention and plenty of criticism for dropping a virtual speech by President Donald Trump's elder daughter for its technical school graduation. Regent and Wichita restauranteur Jon Rolph said that Golden’s resignation was not related to the Ivanka Trump controversy.

WICHITA — Wichita State University President Jay Golden has&nbsp; submitted his resignation to the Kansas Board of Regents, according to a statement Friday afternoon from Regents Chair Bill Feuerborn.
