Tuesday's high school basketball results

HAYS – The TMP Lady Monarchs used a 10-2 first quarter run
to build a double-digit lead and then held off Russell on their way to a 47-43
win Tuesday in the first round of sub-state at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

With the game tied at two, Kassidi Yost scored back-to-back field goals and Sophia Balthazor drained a three to spark at 10-2 run for TMP giving them a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

After Russell briefly trimmed the TMP lead to eight the Monarchs were able to build a double-figure lead again in the second quarter and led by as many as twice in the second quarter, the last time on a Jaci VonLintel layup giving TMP a 24-12 lead at halftime.

TMP built their largest lead of the game at 30-16 on a Balthazor field goal early in the third quarter.

Russell answered with a 10-2 run to close the third quarter and cut the deficit to six at 32-26.

In the forth quarter TMP built a nine-point on back-to-back VonLintel field goals only to see Russell cut the deficit to three with just over a minute to play on a Camille Dortland three-pointer.

TMP’s Megan Hamel added three free throws in the final minute of the game helping the Monarchs secure the 47-43 victory.

Hamel and Emilee Lane each scored 10 points to lead TMP.

The Monarchs improve to 10-12 with the win and will take on the top seed Phillipsburg in the sub-state semifinals in Beloit.

The Panthers beat Concordia 68-53 Tuesday.

TMP girls earn first round sub-state win

Hays High gave up twelve points in the first quarter and trailed by nine through the first eight minutes to Arkansas City.&nbsp; The Indians gave up just fourteen points over the remaining three quarters on their way to a 42-26 victory in the opening round of sub-state.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead through the first four minutes and 12-2 with just under a minute remaining in the first quarter.&nbsp; Hays trailed by nine midway through the second quarter when the comeback began.&nbsp; Hays ended the half on an 8-0 run and extended that run to 17-0 midway through third.

The Indians took the lead during that run and never gave it back.&nbsp; Arkansas City scored just three points in the third quarter and went 9:40 through the middle of the game without a single point.

Hays never led by less than twelve points during the fourth quarter on their way to the sub-state victory.&nbsp; The Indians will travel to Great Bend on Friday with a spot in the state tournament on the line.&nbsp; The Panthers beat Salina Central 63-60 in overtime.

The Indians were led by the double-double of Dalyn Schwarz notching 11 points and 13 rebounds.&nbsp; Hays controlled the backboard with a 38-13 advantage.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays improves to 15-6 on the year.&nbsp; Arkansas City ends their season at 10-11.

Comeback win for Hays in sub-state opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State junior forward&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5315">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;earned All-MIAA Third Team honors for the 2019-20 season, released by the conference office on Tuesday (Mar. 3). MIAA coaches select the team, with Vitztum among the top 15 players honored.

Vitztum led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding in 2019-20. He averaged 14.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. He was fourth in the MIAA in rebounds per game, while ranking 13th&nbsp;in scoring. He was also among the top ten in the conference for free-throw percentage at .795. Vitztum scored in double figures 22 times during the season with 25 points as his season and career high against Northeastern State in Hays. He was also very efficient beyond the 3-point line, hitting 51.1 percent of his attempts (47-of-92, and led the team in field goal percentage at .573. He also had four double-doubles this season in points and rebounds.

This is the first all-conference honor for Vitztum in his time at FHSU. He now has 720 points and 429 rebounds in his career as a Tiger.

Vitztum named to All-MIAA men’s basketball Third Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team had three student-athletes selected to the All-MIAA team, announced Tuesday (March 3) by the league office.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5434">Kacey Kennett</a>&nbsp;earned a spot on the second team,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5442">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;was named to the third team and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5430">Belle Barbieri</a>&nbsp;picked up honorable mention status after their performances throughout the 2019-20 season.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5434">Kacey Kennett</a>&nbsp;earned All-MIAA honors for the third time in her career after picking up second team accolades as a junior and honorable mention status as a sophomore. The senior averaged 12.3 points per game, scoring in double figures 15 times. Kennett averaged 5.5 rebounds per game, second most on the team. She led the team with 55 steals, seventh most in the MIAA. The Olathe, Kan. native scored a season-high 22 points three times, eclipsing 20 points four times throughout the year. She hit 41 3-pointers on the year, burying at least one from behind the arc in all but five contests. Kennett became the 21st Tiger to score 1,000 points at FHSU, currently sitting in ninth on the all-time scoring list. Her 172 made 3-pointers are tied for second most in program history.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5442">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;played her way onto the third team after averaging a team-high 12.8 points and 4.6 assists per game. She leads the league with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.13 while ranking second in assists per game. Hobbs scored in double figures 19 times during the regular season, including 18 of the last 22 regular season contests. She dished out a season-best nine assists three times. The junior scored 14.3 points per game in league action, 10th most in the conference. Hobbs buried 45 3-pointers this season, including seven long-range makes in the regular season finale when she scored a career-best 29 points, the most for a Tiger this season.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5430">Belle Barbieri</a>&nbsp;is an honorable mention selection for the second year in a row after recording an MIAA-best 10 double-doubles on the year. The senior averaged 10.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, ranking second in the conference in rebounds. She blocked 25 shots on the defensive end, eighth most in the conference. Barbieri hit a team-high 53.8 percent of her shots this season, giving the Abilene, Kan. native a career field goal percentage of 56.4, third best in program history. She scored in double figures 18 times while grabbing 10 or more boards 13 times.

Fort Hays State will open postseason play Friday (March 6) when the Tigers take on Pittsburg State in the MIAA Quarterfinals. First tip is slated for noon inside historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

The Tigers are receiving votes in this week's release, picking up 25 points in the balloting process.

Fort Hays State has now been listed in 13 of the 15 polls released this season, climbing as high as No. 5 early in the season.

The Tigers are one of four&nbsp;MIAA schools and one of seven teams from the Central Region recognized in the lastest poll. MIAA regular season champion Central Missouri is ranked 15th and Sioux Falls ranks 24th, while Minnesota Duluth, Nebraska-Kearney, Emporia State and Southeastern Oklahoma State are all receiving votes.

Monday prep basketball results

HAYS – A Ryan Stoecklein three pointer later in the fourth
quarter lifted the TMP-Marian Monarchs past the Phillipsburg Panthers Monday in
the first round of the 3A sub-state 42-38.

The Monarchs rushed out to a 5-2 lead after Carson Jacobs
converted a three-point play and Jackson Schulte followed that with a field
goal giving TMP and early lead.

But the lead was short lived as Phillipsburg answered with a
10-3 first quarter run to build a 12-8 lead. 

Brady Kreutzer scored back-to-back field goals to tie the
game at 12. Then with the game tied at 14 Phillipsburg’s Ty Sides hit a
three-pointer giving Phillipsburg a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The two teams combined to scored just nine points in the
second quarter as Phillipsburg built a 22-18 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw five lead changes with Phillipsburg
leading by as much as four points and TMP led by three at 33-30 at the end of
the quarter.

In the fourth quarter TMP built a five-point lead on a Kreutzer
layup only to see Sides hit back-to-back three-pointers and put Phillipsburg up
36-35. 

TMP’s Ryan Stoecklein hit his second three of the game to
put the Monarchs up 38-36, a lead they would never give up on their way to the
42-38 win.

TMP improves to 17-4 and will take on Hoisington Thursday in
the sub-state semifinals in Beloit.

The No. 1 seed Beloit downed Russell 74-37 and will take on
the five-seed Norton after they upset No. 4 Minneapolis 55-49.

HAYS, Kan. - The No. 14 Fort Hays State wrestling team will send five individuals to the 2020 NCAA Division II National Championships after a strong performance at the Super Region 4 Championships Sunday, hosted by Fort Hays State inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers finished fourth in the team standings with 103 team points.

It was both the highest team finish and the most national qualifiers for the Tigers since the 2014 season.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5398">Mason Turner</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5381">Brandon Ball</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5399">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;all secured their trip to Sioux Falls, S.D. for the national tournament after reaching the regional championship bout before placing second.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5391">Aryus Jones</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5388">Jordan Davis</a>&nbsp;both earned their spot at nationals thanks to victories in the third-place bout.

Three other Tigers also placed in the top six, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5387">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;coming in fourth and both&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5396">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5554">Conrad Vajnar</a>&nbsp;placing sixth.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5398">Mason Turner</a>&nbsp;defeated a pair of nationally ranked opponents to earn a trip to the national championship before finishing second at 125 pounds. The redshirt-freshman dominated fourth-ranked Tanner Cole in the quarterfinals, winning with an 18-2 tech fall before pinning defending national champion Carlos Jacquez in the semifinals. His run came to an end after a 5-3 decision in the championship bout against Marcus Povlick from McKendree, the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds.

No. 2&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5381">Brandon Ball</a>&nbsp;cruised through the 141-pound quarterfinals with a 15-0 tech fall before advancing to the championship with a 6-2 decision in the semifinals. The senior then dropped his first match of the season against No. 4 Colby Smith of Lindenwood, but it was still enough to earn Ball his fourth trip to the national championship site.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5399">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;reached the championship bout at 174 pounds after two exciting wins, defeating Bret Heil of Maryville, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. The junior then defeated third-ranked Josh Jones of McKendree with a sudden-victory takedown. Verhaeghe recorded a late takedown in the third period to tie the score at 3-3 before grabbing an early takedown in the first overtime period. The Bucyrus, Kan. native wrapped up the day with an 8-0 loss against Lindenwood's No. 7 Abner Romero.

No. 7&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5391">Aryus Jones</a>&nbsp;fought through five matches to come away with a team-high four wins on the day, including three bonus-point wins. Jones cruised through the opening round of the 187-pound bracket, earning a 16-0 tech fall early in the second period. He then majored Gavin Grime of Bellarmine in the quarterfinals, 16-2. After suffering a narrow 4-3 defeat in the semifinals, The sophomore fought through two consolation rounds to keep his season going. He held on to defeat conference rival Nate Panagakis of Newman before a convincing 13-2 major decision in the third-place match.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5388">Jordan Davis</a>&nbsp;followed Jones with another exciting third-place bout, pinning ninth-ranked Augustus Boyd for the second time on the day. The senior opened the day by pinning Boyd in the quarterfinals before moving to the back side of the bracket in the semifinals. Davis won an exciting consolation semifinal match by two, 11-9, before sticking Boyd to the mat again midway through the third-place match, capturing the final ticket to Sioux Falls at 197 pounds.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5387">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;placed fourth in the 285-pound bracket after a 3-2 day on the mat. The junior fought through the consolation bracket all afternoon after losing in the opening round due to a ride-time point, 4-3. Cooper bounced back with two decisions and a pin to reach the third-place match before dropping a grueling decision against Drury's Jared Rennick, 10-6.

12th-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5396">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;reached the semifinals of the 149-pound bracket before dropping his next three matches. Scantlin picked up a second-period pin in the first round before holding on for an exciting 7-6 decision against No. 10 Kevin Kissane of Newman. The Mulvane, Kan. native then fell in three-straight decisions in the consolation bracket to place sixth.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5554">Conrad Vajnar</a>&nbsp;fought through the consolation bracket at 165 pounds to earn a spot on the podium after dropping his opening-round match. The Hays native bounced back with two bonus-point victories, earning a 17-0 tech fall in just 3:26 before adding an 11-2 major decision in the consolation quarterfinals. Vajnar came up short in the backside semifinals, losing via fall before dropping a 12-4 major decision to finish sixth.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5384">Dy'Juan Carney</a>&nbsp;helped the Tigers earn 2.5 team points after a quick pin in the first consolation round, finishing the day 1-2.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5543">Tristan Porsch</a>&nbsp;added another team point with a victory in his second bout of the day, also turning in a 1-2 record.

Tigers qualify five wrestlers for national championships



DALLAS –&nbsp;Wichita State rallied from a 24-point second-half deficit to stun host SMU, 66-62, Sunday afternoon at Moody Coliseum in the largest comeback in school history.

Wichita State (22-7, 10-6 American) trailed 50-26 with 14:48 to play, at which point ESPN calculated SMU's win probability at 99.8 percent. Instead, the Shockers outscored the Mustangs 40-12 the rest of the way to take over sole possession of fourth-place in the conference standings and keep its hopes alive for an NCAA tournament bid.

The comeback was the second-largest in Division I basketball this year behind Eastern Illinois, which surged from 27 down to defeat Murray State.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4212">Dexter Dennis</a>&nbsp;set career-highs with 25 points and seven three-point field goals on 14 attempts to lead the Shockers.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4224">Grant Sherfield</a>&nbsp;supplied 14 points and six assists and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4213">Jaime Echenique</a>&nbsp;added seven points and team-high 13 rebounds.

Isiaha Mike scored 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting for SMU (19-9, 9-7, which lost at home for the first time in conference play and for just the second time all season.

WSU led 17-16 near the midway point of the first half, but SMU scored 16 of the next 17 points and went into the break with a 37-24 cushion. Mike supplied 10 points in a 13-2 SMU run to begin the second half, which pushed the lead to 24 points.

That was rock bottom for the Shockers who were 9-of-36 from the field (.250) at that point.

Over the last 14:00 they made 14-of-24 attempts, including 9-of-14 from three. Dennis hit five of those triples on his way to 17 second-half points. He became just the sixth player in school history to sink seven-or-more threes in a game.

As a team, Wichita State nailed 14 three-pointers – one shy of the school record – and its 36 attempts were the second-most in program history.

WSU won on the glass, 41-29, and outscored SMU 23-10 on second-chance opportunities, helped by 17 offensive rebounds.

The Shockers scored 17-straight points on five three-pointers to hack the 24-point deficit down to four with 7:22 to play.

FHSU men's track and field finishes eighth at MIAA Championships



PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team was unable to keep pace with Pittsburg State as the Gorillas (10-7, 2-1 MIAA) took the weekend series with a 9-3 victory on Sunday. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 11-8 (1-2 MIAA) on the season. Fort Hays State looks to get back on track next weekend against Central Oklahoma in a three game series. Fort Hays State will open their first home conference series of the season on Friday at 3 pm at Larks Park.&nbsp;

Tiger baseball drops series finale at Pittsburg State

HAYS – The Norton Blue Jays had three wrestlers bring home
individual state championship and two more finish fourth as they claimed the
3-2-1A state wrestling tournament Saturday in Hays.

Sophomores Darius Sheilds (106 pounds) and Kolton Field (120
pounds) and senior Cole Amlong (170 pounds) all claimed their first state
titles on Saturday. Camdyn Unterseher (132 pounds) and Judson Wiltfong (220
pounds) earned a fourth-place finish. Norton finished with 120 team points.

Hoxie also had three individual champions and came in second
as a team with 113 points.

Sophomore Drew Bell (126 pounds) and freshman Derek Johnson
(132 pounds) earned their first championships. At 138 pounds Dylan Weimer
claimed his second straight title, after winning the title at 132 pounds last
year.

Plainville’s Jordan Finnesy became a two-time champion Saturday
winning the title at 182 pounds. He claimed the 170 pound as a junior. Plainville’s
Logan Normandin finished third at 113 pounds and Kyle Werner was fifth at 170
pounds.

Wyatt Pedigo defended his title at 195 pounds and won he third
straight title.

At 160 pounds Ellis; Kyle Pfeifer placed fifth and Trego’s Dillon
Dunn finished third at 220 pounds.

Norton wins 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament

PARK CITY – Both Hays High Indian wrestlers who qualified for
the 5A state tournament in Park City earned a top six finish Saturday.

Davontai Robinson After going 1-1 on day one both Davontai Robinson, at 182 and
Gavin Nutting at 220 bounced back to earn a medal on Saturday.

Robinson opened the tournament with a first-period fall over
Blake Smith (Topeka-Seaman). In the semifinals, also on Friday, Robinson lost
to Trevor Dopps (Goddard) by a second-period fall.

Robinson bounced back with a pair of consolation wins over Shayne
Curdie (Bonner Springs) and Sean Carroll (OP-St. Thomas Aquinas) before
dropping a consolation semifinal match against Lynauz Cox (Maize-South).

Then in the fifth-place match Robinson lost by fall in the
third period to Charlie Frisch (Wichita-Kapaun Mt. Carmel).

Gavin Nutting&nbsp; Gavin Nutting earned a fifth place finished at 220.

Nutting opened the tournament with a second-period fall over
Ezra Shove (Topeka-Seaman). In the championship quarterfinals Nutting lost by a
21-6 tech fall to Cade Lautt (Lenexa-St. James Academy).

Nutting battled back with a pair of falls in the second and
third consolation rounds over Gabe Cornett (KC-Turner) and Gabe Arredondo
(Bishop Carroll Catholic).

In the consolation semifinals John Hubbel (OP-Blue Valley
Southwest) defeated Nutting 16-7.

In the fifth-place match Nutting picked up a 9-8 win over Mason
Ross (Wichita-Northwest) to finish fifth and 36-11 on the season. 

The Indians finished 19th with 26 teams points.

After shooting 61-percent in the first half the Tigers
finished at 49-percent for the game including 10-of-23 from beyond the arc and 21-of-30
from the free throw line.

Jared Vitztum led the Tigers with 24 points, half of them at the free throw line.&nbsp;Wichita native Nyjee Wright went 4-for-6 from three and scored 18. Devin Davis scored all of his 15 points in the second half. Aaron Nicholson added 13 in his final game in a Tiger uniform.

Tiger men close out regular season with win at Newman

3-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Fort Hays State women
to a 74-48 rout of Newman Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium.

Hobbs' seven long-range makes are the most for a Tigersince Noami Bancroft hit eight against Missouri Soutnern on January 11, 2010.

The Tiges (22-6, 13-6 MIAA) won their final five games to close out the regular season and finish in a three-way tie for fourth place in the MIAA. They will be the No. 5 seed in next week's conference tournament and play the No. 4 seed Pittsburg State at noon Friday at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

Hobbs scored 12 of her points during a 20-2 run over the
final three and-a-half minutes of the second quarter in which the Tigers turned
a five-point deficit into a 13 points halftime lead.

FHSU scored six of the first eight points in the third
quarter to push their lead to 17. Newman (11-17, 6-13 MIAA) scored the final
six points of the quarter to close within 50-39 but the Tigers scored the first
nine points of the fourth quarter to put the game away.

The Tigers held Newman to 23-percent shooting in the second
half and expanded their lead from 17 to 20 points despite hitting only one shot
during a 10 and-a-half minute stretch in the second and third quarters. 

Belle Barbieri was a point shy of a double-double scoring nine
points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

The hopes of an MIAA Tournament bid for the Fort Hays State men's basketball team hangs in the balance Saturday as they take on Newman University in Wichita at 3:30 pm. The Tigers must win, but will also need help to get into the tournament. 

If FHSU can win its contest with Newman, it needs Central Missouri to defeat Pittsburg State in Pittsburg also on Saturday to grab a spot in the MIAA Tournament. FHSU and Pittsburg State go into the final day of the regular season tied for 10th&nbsp;place in the MIAA.
